19
00:01:13.599 --> 00:01:16.519
or even running you up and downstairs. Okay, that's not
20
00:01:16.599 --> 00:01:19.159

takes is an open mind, a bit of curiosity, and
26
00:01:36.959 --> 00:01:40.280
a desire to have well, have fun. Okay, that's what
27
00:01:40.319 --> 00:01:43.400
we're all about. And yes, if you have ever wondered
28
00:01:43.640 --> 00:01:46.560
what it is like to be a cop, you will

serious nature of law enforcement and you will participate in

hands on exercises using role players and BPD officers will
36
00:02:13.039 --> 00:02:15.840
be trading places with you and they will become the
37
00:02:15.919 --> 00:02:18.680
role players acting as the violators while you get to
38
00:02:18.680 --> 00:02:22.560
be the cops. So you know, you will learn about
39
00:02:22.599 --> 00:02:25.840
traffic radar operation and you will get to be the
40
00:02:25.879 --> 00:02:28.960
officer actually making the traffic stop on one of our
41
00:02:29.000 --> 00:02:32.319
police officers who will be acting as the violator, and
42
00:02:32.400 --> 00:02:34.560
you will get to participate in making a high risk
43
00:02:34.639 --> 00:02:37.199
stop on a vehicle whose occupants are wanted for an
44
00:02:37.240 --> 00:02:40.319
armed robbery. Will they be you know? Will they actually
45
00:02:40.319 --> 00:02:44.479
be peaceful with you and cooperate? Will they obey your
46
00:02:44.479 --> 00:02:49.159
commands or will they challenge your authority like it's done
47
00:02:49.199 --> 00:02:53.840
so many times now? On even simple traffic stops. You
48
00:02:53.879 --> 00:02:58.000
will discover very quickly how stressful and scary it can
49
00:02:58.039 --> 00:03:00.719
be when you are the one having fear of building
50
00:03:01.080 --> 00:03:06.599
looking for an active shooter. Yes, and even in simulated scenarios, folks,
51
00:03:07.199 --> 00:03:09.319
you will get a taste of the level of stress
52
00:03:09.840 --> 00:03:12.479
and you'll get to challenge yourself to overcome the fear
53
00:03:13.120 --> 00:03:17.639
of the unknown, the fear of not knowing if the
54
00:03:17.639 --> 00:03:21.199
shooter is waiting for you around the next corner. Okay,
55
00:03:21.759 --> 00:03:25.159
line and wait just for you to come around the corner.
56
00:03:26.439 --> 00:03:29.000
Do you have what it takes? Do you want to
57
00:03:29.039 --> 00:03:29.479
find out?
58
00:03:31.039 --> 00:03:31.240
You know?
59
00:03:31.280 --> 00:03:35.319
Are you ready to challenge yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally
60
00:03:36.080 --> 00:03:39.280
and prove to yourself that you have the courage to
61
00:03:39.360 --> 00:03:43.719
push on and move forward knowing that the next thing
62
00:03:43.759 --> 00:03:48.360
that you do maybe your last.
63
00:03:47.960 --> 00:03:49.280
That's pretty deep.
64
00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:52.199
Yeah, yeah, you know. It'll be fun though, And the
65
00:03:52.240 --> 00:03:54.319
main thing that folks need to remember is it's all
66
00:03:54.360 --> 00:03:56.599
safe because we're the role players, you know.
67
00:03:58.039 --> 00:03:58.719
And you know.
68
00:03:58.840 --> 00:04:00.400
The other thing, folks is if you want to take
69
00:04:00.400 --> 00:04:03.520
a step into our world and actually see if you
70
00:04:03.560 --> 00:04:06.520
can handle it, well, then join us. Okay, join us
71
00:04:06.520 --> 00:04:09.520
at the BPD Citizens Police Academy, and you will get
72
00:04:09.560 --> 00:04:12.360
to experience what ninety nine percent of the people on
73
00:04:12.400 --> 00:04:15.879
the planet never get to experience, and that is what
74
00:04:15.919 --> 00:04:18.720
it's like to be a cop, you know, a law
75
00:04:18.759 --> 00:04:24.240
enforcement professional. The highs and the lows, the complete opposite
76
00:04:24.319 --> 00:04:27.680
ends of the spectrum. And you will be surprised how
77
00:04:27.720 --> 00:04:31.120
even though you know that you are in a safe environment,
78
00:04:32.800 --> 00:04:34.800
you know that the role players who are playing the
79
00:04:34.800 --> 00:04:38.519
part of the criminals are BPD officers and staff members. Well,
80
00:04:38.560 --> 00:04:42.000
we can still get you, you know, get your breathing
81
00:04:42.079 --> 00:04:47.040
rate up, get your heart rate to increase, and your
82
00:04:47.079 --> 00:04:51.279
stress level to rise. During our force on force style scenarios.
83
00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:57.519
You will also learn how three minutes three minutes is
84
00:04:57.560 --> 00:05:00.759
actually a long time when you need assistance and the
85
00:05:00.759 --> 00:05:05.519
closest backup officer is three minutes away. And now consider
86
00:05:05.800 --> 00:05:08.639
that your closest back them in Bedford maybe fifteen minutes
87
00:05:08.720 --> 00:05:11.560
or more away. Okay, and I have had times during
88
00:05:11.600 --> 00:05:15.000
my career where my closest backup was over forty five
89
00:05:15.040 --> 00:05:19.000
minutes away when I worked for a state agency. And
90
00:05:19.079 --> 00:05:21.120
for any of you that do not feel like three
91
00:05:21.160 --> 00:05:23.800
minutes is a long time, well, join us at the
92
00:05:23.839 --> 00:05:27.439

93
00:05:27.519 --> 00:05:32.600
happen in three minutes. And it will take you actually

00:05:32.680 --> 00:05:35.360
less than three minutes to fill out your online application
95
00:05:35.439 --> 00:05:38.680

104
00:06:09.439 --> 00:06:13.920

105

00:06:17.920 --> 00:06:21.240

107
00:06:21.319 --> 00:06:24.279

Police Department at two to fifteen East Main Street and
109
00:06:27.120 --> 00:06:32.240
fill in an application. We would love you to join us. Joe,
110
00:06:32.279 --> 00:06:34.800
you know, I've actually talked a long time here and
111
00:06:34.879 --> 00:06:37.680
talked enough actually, So what's up, you know in the
112
00:06:37.720 --> 00:06:40.560
world of you know, the recent drone warnings that we've
113
00:06:40.560 --> 00:06:41.399
been hearing about.
114
00:06:41.759 --> 00:06:46.000
Yeah, there's been more than three thousand drone events near
115
00:06:46.160 --> 00:06:50.839
American airports since just since twenty twenty one, and those
116
00:06:50.879 --> 00:06:54.560
have included eleven aircrafts this year alone that have reportedly
117
00:06:54.600 --> 00:06:59.040
taken evasive action to avoid collisions. These drone incidents have
118
00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:02.600
caused significant flight delays at times near major airports, and
119
00:07:02.639 --> 00:07:07.560
in two circumstances, drones collided with aircraft conducting critical response
120
00:07:07.600 --> 00:07:12.079
operations during emergencies in California and Texas this year. As
121
00:07:12.079 --> 00:07:15.000
we've discussed here on cop talk about our concerns about
122
00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:18.240
the intentional use of drones for attacks, we also want
123
00:07:18.240 --> 00:07:20.439
to look at the concerns of things like major sporting
124
00:07:20.480 --> 00:07:24.040
events such as the upcoming twenty twenty six World Cup.
125
00:07:24.560 --> 00:07:27.160
Yeah, and Joe, you and I have actually discussed this,
126
00:07:27.680 --> 00:07:29.680
and like you said, we have shared a little of
127
00:07:29.680 --> 00:07:32.519
our concern with our audience here on cop Talk, and
128
00:07:32.560 --> 00:07:35.879
to summarize for our listeners, we feel that immediate action
129
00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:38.959
needs to be taken by Congress to allow federal, state,
130
00:07:39.120 --> 00:07:43.560
and local departments. They need to allow us full authority
131
00:07:43.600 --> 00:07:46.240
to take down drones when we have an objective reason
132
00:07:46.519 --> 00:07:48.199
to believe that the drone may be a danger to
133
00:07:48.439 --> 00:07:51.600
the public. Okay, and it appears that we are now
134
00:07:51.680 --> 00:07:54.199
actually being joined by friends in Congress. Did you just that?
135
00:07:54.360 --> 00:07:57.920
But legislation like normal is moving forward way too slowly
136
00:07:58.000 --> 00:08:00.000
for what I feel is a threat to our national secuity.
137
00:08:00.560 --> 00:08:03.839
Yeah, that's right, Rob. The senators and administrative officials are
138
00:08:03.839 --> 00:08:06.800
now saying that Congress needs to change laws to toughen
139
00:08:06.839 --> 00:08:09.839
the penalties for drone use and to get federal agencies
140
00:08:09.879 --> 00:08:12.839
new expanded authority to address drones that may be used
141
00:08:12.839 --> 00:08:16.319
to threaten the public or events. Congress in twenty eighteen
142
00:08:16.360 --> 00:08:19.800
expanded authority of the Justice Department and the Department of
143
00:08:19.800 --> 00:08:24.000
Homeland Security to disable or destroy threatening drones, and that
144
00:08:24.279 --> 00:08:29.240
authority has been temporarily extended. A new legislation would expand
145
00:08:29.279 --> 00:08:32.759
federal coverage for airports and critical infrastructures like power plants,
146
00:08:32.799 --> 00:08:36.840
oil refineries, or chemical facilities, and high risk prison of transports.
147
00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:40.000
It would also allow states and local law enforcement to
148
00:08:40.080 --> 00:08:43.279
directly take down drones without waiting for federal authorities.
149
00:08:43.440 --> 00:08:45.919
Yeah, and Joe, you know, as you know, it's been
150
00:08:46.039 --> 00:08:51.440
kind of silly because they keep on repeatedly temporarily extending that, right,
151
00:08:51.639 --> 00:08:53.919
why not just go ahead and make the legislation, right,
152
00:08:53.960 --> 00:08:58.159
you know, But since twenty eighteen, the Secret Service has
153
00:08:58.200 --> 00:09:02.039
actually tracked hundreds of drones by relating temporary flight restrictions
154
00:09:02.039 --> 00:09:05.320
that protect the President and others. And while the FBI
155
00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:09.039
and Justice Department said drones used as espionage technology within
156
00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:12.080
the United States is also increasing. So in the last
157
00:09:12.120 --> 00:09:15.360
six months of twenty twenty four, over twenty seven thousand
158
00:09:15.440 --> 00:09:18.480
drones were detected within five hundred meters of the US
159
00:09:18.600 --> 00:09:22.200
southern border. And Joe, you know, there's also those incidents,
160
00:09:22.279 --> 00:09:24.320
right that occurred at like the NFL game in the
161
00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:25.120
Boston Marathon.
162
00:09:25.240 --> 00:09:28.039
Yeah, that's right. Man pled guilty in June as a
163
00:09:28.039 --> 00:09:31.159
matter of fact, after he was charged with violating the
164
00:09:31.200 --> 00:09:34.559
Defense Airspace after he flew a drone over the NFL
165
00:09:34.799 --> 00:09:39.440
AFC Championship game in Baltimore January. In September of Auston
166
00:09:39.480 --> 00:09:42.120
man was charged with the unlawful flying drone near the
167
00:09:42.120 --> 00:09:45.000
finish line of the April twenty twenty four Boston Marathon,
168
00:09:45.399 --> 00:09:48.000
which prompted a law enforcement to seize at mid air
169
00:09:48.120 --> 00:09:48.639
and landed.
170
00:09:50.039 --> 00:09:54.639
Well, you know, so now that we've you know, gotten
171
00:09:55.039 --> 00:09:58.519
the drone thing out here on the table, I know,
172
00:09:58.600 --> 00:10:00.840
Joe that you don't really want to talk too much
173
00:10:00.840 --> 00:10:02.840
about it on an open audience, even though our audience
174
00:10:02.879 --> 00:10:04.879
is a little bit different than most audiences, you know.
175
00:10:05.879 --> 00:10:07.840
But I think we'll leave it at that, Joe. You know,
176
00:10:07.879 --> 00:10:10.240
we won't talk too much. But I mean, even Joe,
177
00:10:11.360 --> 00:10:13.759
if you didn't have an elaborate drone and you just
178
00:10:13.799 --> 00:10:16.200
wanted to fly a drone into a crowd and just
179
00:10:16.320 --> 00:10:18.840
hit somebody with it, it could cause injury, you know,
180
00:10:19.320 --> 00:10:20.279
maybe even a death.
181
00:10:20.720 --> 00:10:20.919
You know.
182
00:10:21.600 --> 00:10:25.279
So so let's let's move on and talk about something
183
00:10:25.320 --> 00:10:28.480
else that is very concerning, and that is that last month,
184
00:10:29.080 --> 00:10:33.559
as colleges and universities prepared to resume classes, students at
185
00:10:33.600 --> 00:10:37.840
nearly two dozen campuses got a grim welcome, which was
186
00:10:37.879 --> 00:10:42.480
an emergency alert, and one one student points out that
187
00:10:42.480 --> 00:10:45.879
the emergency alert said active shooter on my campus right now,
188
00:10:45.960 --> 00:10:49.240
that that student said, which was a theater student at
189
00:10:49.240 --> 00:10:52.879
the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and that student had
190
00:10:52.919 --> 00:10:56.159
posted that actually on x during the subsequent lockdown, adding
191
00:10:56.320 --> 00:10:58.600
we can't live like this, you know, Joe, And I
192
00:10:58.600 --> 00:11:01.679
can kind of relate with that. I agree with that student,
193
00:11:01.799 --> 00:11:05.759
you know. And I can just read that quote that
194
00:11:05.759 --> 00:11:09.120
that student put out there, Joe, and can fill the fear.
195
00:11:10.440 --> 00:11:12.519
That that person was feeling. It summed up very well
196
00:11:12.519 --> 00:11:13.559
in such a short statement.
197
00:11:13.720 --> 00:11:17.639
Yeah, absolutely, you know. And in seventeen states over the
198
00:11:17.679 --> 00:11:21.799
past two weeks, students returning to college campuses were confronted
199
00:11:21.840 --> 00:11:25.879
with active shooter alerts and lockdowns. They were all false alarms,
200
00:11:25.960 --> 00:11:29.440
and an online group taking credit for calling in the
201
00:11:29.480 --> 00:11:33.519
fake reports to law enforcement. All right, and all told,
202
00:11:33.559 --> 00:11:37.120
there were at least twenty two swatting hoaxes as American
203
00:11:37.120 --> 00:11:40.360
colleges during the last week of August and early September.
204
00:11:40.799 --> 00:11:44.840
Among those hit were Auburn University in Alabama, three colleges
205
00:11:44.879 --> 00:11:47.759
in Georgia, all of which received false reports on the
206
00:11:47.799 --> 00:11:52.600
same day, and Villanova University in Pennsylvania, which was swatted
207
00:11:52.639 --> 00:11:56.679
twice and most of the calls actually involved an armed
208
00:11:56.679 --> 00:12:02.200
person in the library. Some actually featured gunshot in the background. So,
209
00:12:02.840 --> 00:12:04.320
you know, Joe, what what do you what do you
210
00:12:04.360 --> 00:12:04.919
think about that?
211
00:12:05.840 --> 00:12:07.399
They're getting pretty elaborate.
212
00:12:07.639 --> 00:12:10.679
Yeah, you know, to add, yeah, we were just talking.
213
00:12:11.039 --> 00:12:13.799
It was kind of weird because we were just talking
214
00:12:13.840 --> 00:12:17.000
about voice changers, you know, right before the podcast and
215
00:12:17.039 --> 00:12:21.120
then yeah, and then to see that they're using.
216
00:12:21.120 --> 00:12:26.200
The same technology, yeah, for a nefarious purpose. Yeah, absolutely
217
00:12:26.240 --> 00:12:26.919
more convincing.
218
00:12:27.279 --> 00:12:31.039
And Joe just quickly on that, you know, as as
219
00:12:31.480 --> 00:12:33.440
both people that have worked the board and dispatch in
220
00:12:33.440 --> 00:12:36.720
the past. What does that do to a dispatcher? What
221
00:12:36.720 --> 00:12:39.559
what kind of information then does that dispatcher relate to
222
00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:40.080
the officer.
223
00:12:40.879 --> 00:12:42.399
Well, they need to tell them what they hear and
224
00:12:42.519 --> 00:12:43.720
what's going on in the background.
225
00:12:43.799 --> 00:12:46.480
Yeah, you know that that that that so the dispatcher
226
00:12:46.519 --> 00:12:48.840
can be like, you know, hey, I heard shots in
227
00:12:48.879 --> 00:12:52.799
the background right right, and now these officers are arriving
228
00:12:52.840 --> 00:12:57.200
on scene with bad information, you know, and even before that,
229
00:12:57.279 --> 00:13:00.480
I guess Joe, the officers are actually having to spawn
230
00:13:01.919 --> 00:13:05.559
at a very fast and you know, a pace to
231
00:13:06.600 --> 00:13:10.519
expedite their response. Well, which puts all those motorists, all
232
00:13:10.519 --> 00:13:13.639
those pedestrians, everybody else, that even an increased danger. And
233
00:13:14.080 --> 00:13:17.159
can you blame law enforcement because law enforcements responding to
234
00:13:18.000 --> 00:13:21.720
shots being heard by dispatch over the phone, right you know?
235
00:13:22.279 --> 00:13:23.200
I mean, so there you go.
236
00:13:23.360 --> 00:13:27.120
Right, Well, just a couple of years ago, they just
237
00:13:27.440 --> 00:13:32.039
passed the law as far as enacting tougher penalties for
238
00:13:32.159 --> 00:13:36.399
these swatting calls and these hoaxes. So I'm hoping these
239
00:13:36.440 --> 00:13:40.960
people are are getting caught and having to pay the price,
240
00:13:41.000 --> 00:13:41.639
so to speak.
241
00:13:41.799 --> 00:13:44.879
Yeah, you know, just so, I guess you know, there's
242
00:13:44.879 --> 00:13:47.360
more to be said about the response and even the
243
00:13:47.480 --> 00:13:50.320
national media taking part of this, right yeah, In.
244
00:13:50.279 --> 00:13:54.120
Some ways, these false alarms are triggering a massive police
245
00:13:54.159 --> 00:13:58.519
response and nationwide news alerts. They can be nearly as
246
00:13:58.559 --> 00:14:03.559
psychologically damaging as a shooter. Experts say. The challenges with
247
00:14:03.639 --> 00:14:05.600
these hopes is that when you're in the moment, you
248
00:14:05.639 --> 00:14:08.799
don't know if it's real or not. The individuals who
249
00:14:08.799 --> 00:14:11.320
are experiencing it, the fear of the anxiety to worry,
250
00:14:11.360 --> 00:14:13.840
all of these feelings are very real. All of these
251
00:14:13.840 --> 00:14:18.039
things can reduce psychological trauma. The burden is particularly acute
252
00:14:18.039 --> 00:14:21.000
in gen Z, the first generation for whom gun violence
253
00:14:21.080 --> 00:14:24.240
is the number one cause of death. Kids today have
254
00:14:24.360 --> 00:14:27.399
grown up with lockdown drills, and by the time they
255
00:14:27.399 --> 00:14:30.720
get to college, they may be out of practice. So
256
00:14:31.320 --> 00:14:34.960
most colleges and universities don't typically conduct drills, let alone
257
00:14:35.080 --> 00:14:40.720
officers offer thought thorough emergency response training. Students will be
258
00:14:40.759 --> 00:14:43.039
relying on the skills that they've learned in high school
259
00:14:43.159 --> 00:14:46.960
as well as elementary and middle school, but as we know,
260
00:14:47.080 --> 00:14:51.039
skills can degrade when not being used. These could potentially
261
00:14:51.039 --> 00:14:54.240
make students and staff on college campuses more vulnerable and
262
00:14:54.360 --> 00:14:55.519
less prepared to respond.
263
00:14:56.320 --> 00:15:00.320
Yeah, school swatting in they've actually accelerated in recent year years,
264
00:15:00.879 --> 00:15:04.159
but exact figures are actually hard to come by, And
265
00:15:04.240 --> 00:15:08.559
the nonprofit k through twelve School shooting database actually tracked
266
00:15:08.600 --> 00:15:12.480
eight hundred and fifty three swating incidents between January twenty
267
00:15:12.519 --> 00:15:15.600
twenty three and June of twenty twenty four. Ohly cow,
268
00:15:15.919 --> 00:15:18.639
that's a lot then, Yeah, and you know the most
269
00:15:18.679 --> 00:15:22.200
recent data available is that actual data, Joe, So I
270
00:15:22.200 --> 00:15:26.240
couldn't pull anything you know, more recent, but just from
271
00:15:26.279 --> 00:15:29.360
January twenty twenty twenty three to June twenty twenty four,
272
00:15:29.399 --> 00:15:32.679
eight hundred and fifty three Joe. You know, so in
273
00:15:32.720 --> 00:15:35.639
twenty twenty three, the FBI actually created a database to
274
00:15:35.639 --> 00:15:38.320
track swatting incidents, but it's not open to the public,
275
00:15:38.320 --> 00:15:40.159
so of course we're not going to reveal any numbers
276
00:15:40.240 --> 00:15:43.200
from that. And to tell you truth, Jow, I have
277
00:15:43.320 --> 00:15:45.639
not gone to that database and actually looked at that.
278
00:15:46.759 --> 00:15:50.320
But swatting hoax has actually first made the FBI's radar
279
00:15:50.399 --> 00:15:53.639
in two thousand and eight, but they ramped up considerably
280
00:15:53.759 --> 00:15:57.679
after the pandemic and alongside the number of gun crimes
281
00:15:57.879 --> 00:15:59.039
in and around campuses.
282
00:16:01.960 --> 00:16:03.919
You know, I was just doing some maths real quick
283
00:16:03.960 --> 00:16:09.919
while you were talking. That's sixteen months from January twenty
284
00:16:09.960 --> 00:16:13.519
three to June of twenty four, and at eight hundred
285
00:16:13.519 --> 00:16:16.200
and fifty three incidents between that time, that's an average
286
00:16:16.240 --> 00:16:20.840
of fifty three incidents a month. See, that's more than
287
00:16:20.879 --> 00:16:25.559
one a day. Yeah, it's a lot, man, It's ridiculous.
288
00:16:26.320 --> 00:16:31.919
Let's see, swatting hoaxes that trigger a large or heavy
289
00:16:32.120 --> 00:16:35.559
law enforcement present may further traumatize students who grow up
290
00:16:35.600 --> 00:16:38.759
in a violent community or have negative association with the police.
291
00:16:39.159 --> 00:16:42.919
As emergency response also raises the risk of psych physical
292
00:16:43.440 --> 00:16:47.200
danger when police cars racing to the scene. Sometimes crashes
293
00:16:47.240 --> 00:16:50.440
and other injuries can result. Two students of the University
294
00:16:50.480 --> 00:16:53.639
of Southern of South Carolina sustained minor injuries during an
295
00:16:53.639 --> 00:16:57.000
evacuation of a library building following a false active shooter
296
00:16:57.080 --> 00:16:59.799
report on January or August twenty twenty four.
297
00:17:00.519 --> 00:17:04.319
Yeah, and those hoaxes tax first responders, diverting them from
298
00:17:04.400 --> 00:17:08.279
real emergencies and raising their risk of post traumatic stress.
299
00:17:08.880 --> 00:17:13.200
And Jacqueline Shildkraut, a school safety expert, says that even
300
00:17:13.240 --> 00:17:16.960
your best training doesn't mean that your first responders are
301
00:17:17.000 --> 00:17:19.920
not going to be impacted. Your body is going to
302
00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:23.960
do what it's trained to do. You're adrenaline, Well, it's
303
00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:27.720
going through the roof, and at some point you can
304
00:17:27.720 --> 00:17:31.680
come down from that. But that repeated adrenaline over and
305
00:17:31.759 --> 00:17:36.079
over again it could be very taxing. And students who
306
00:17:36.200 --> 00:17:38.839
arrive on campus in August, looking forward to a new
307
00:17:38.839 --> 00:17:42.599
school year, only to find themselves locked down and fearing
308
00:17:42.640 --> 00:17:45.480
an active shooter may no longer feel safe on campus.
309
00:17:46.160 --> 00:17:50.279
An active shooter alert during the middle of opening masks
310
00:17:50.279 --> 00:17:54.359
for students, a Villa Nova freshman posted on x during
311
00:17:54.400 --> 00:17:58.559
in August twenty first lockdown. Everyone is hiding, Please just
312
00:17:58.640 --> 00:17:59.559
keep me in your thoughts.
313
00:18:00.160 --> 00:18:02.759
Scared and see, like we went to the one that
314
00:18:02.880 --> 00:18:06.000
was called in Here a couple of years ago, and
315
00:18:06.920 --> 00:18:09.359
at the time the school that we went to, and
316
00:18:09.400 --> 00:18:11.319
I was working and you were working, and we both
317
00:18:11.359 --> 00:18:14.920
responded with our friends from the Sheriff's office and the
318
00:18:14.920 --> 00:18:17.559
state police. My son was at the school that day.
319
00:18:18.759 --> 00:18:21.880
He told me later a couple of days after the incident,
320
00:18:21.920 --> 00:18:23.960
he said, that's he said, that is probably the most
321
00:18:24.000 --> 00:18:27.640
scared that I've ever been in my life. And not
322
00:18:27.839 --> 00:18:31.000
knowing if it was actively going on or not until
323
00:18:31.000 --> 00:18:33.240
we got there, you have to presume that it is.
324
00:18:33.279 --> 00:18:37.079
You can't assume that it's not. As a parent, you know,
325
00:18:37.119 --> 00:18:41.279
you're torn between you know, where's my child? Is he safe?
326
00:18:41.720 --> 00:18:44.839
And I have an assignment to do. But I did
327
00:18:45.000 --> 00:18:47.119
know where he would be at that time. And when
328
00:18:47.119 --> 00:18:49.160
I did see him through the window of one of
329
00:18:49.160 --> 00:18:51.519
the buildings, we hadn't checked yet that they were locked.
330
00:18:53.119 --> 00:18:56.240
Actually I saw him after we cleared it. Uh, he said, well,
331
00:18:56.279 --> 00:18:59.160
I saw you, and I knew everything was okay. Yes,
332
00:18:59.240 --> 00:19:01.039
So it made me feel good that he has that
333
00:19:01.119 --> 00:19:04.599
much confidence in me, But it made me feel awful
334
00:19:04.799 --> 00:19:06.799
that I would imagine a lot of these other students
335
00:19:06.839 --> 00:19:09.039
are feeling the same way. Yeah, Like, what do you
336
00:19:09.039 --> 00:19:10.759
remember from high school? We'll be like, I remember that
337
00:19:10.759 --> 00:19:12.759
time we had a lockdown because we thought somebody was
338
00:19:12.799 --> 00:19:14.599
an active shooter was on the campus, and that scared
339
00:19:14.599 --> 00:19:15.119
the hell out of it.
340
00:19:15.559 --> 00:19:18.359
Yeah, we were. We were flowing through that school with
341
00:19:18.359 --> 00:19:20.759
patrol rafts. Joe. If you remember, I came over with
342
00:19:20.799 --> 00:19:23.480
that lady with the key and said, Joe, because I
343
00:19:23.519 --> 00:19:25.480
was by myself, so I said, Joe, can you come
344
00:19:25.480 --> 00:19:27.839
with me? And I think you and maybe a trooper yep,
345
00:19:28.000 --> 00:19:33.839
came with science building and you know, it was it
346
00:19:33.920 --> 00:19:38.440
was one of those situations where it was a strange
347
00:19:38.480 --> 00:19:40.960
situation because I actually had no fear at that time.
348
00:19:41.079 --> 00:19:44.680
But the reason for that is one, we weren't actively
349
00:19:44.720 --> 00:19:49.839
hearing gunshots, right, Okay, so that's one thing. But number two,
350
00:19:52.319 --> 00:19:55.279
you know, the decision was made long ago in my
351
00:19:55.400 --> 00:19:58.599
mind that no matter what happens and what happens to me,
352
00:19:59.559 --> 00:20:03.039
I'm better trained, better prepared, better equipped than any student
353
00:20:03.160 --> 00:20:05.519
or teacher in that school, Joe. So we've just got
354
00:20:05.519 --> 00:20:07.119
to do what we've got to do. Yeah, you know,
355
00:20:07.240 --> 00:20:10.480
I'm just talking about from no, no, Yeah, I wasn't
356
00:20:10.519 --> 00:20:12.839
commenting on any of that. I was just saying that
357
00:20:12.839 --> 00:20:15.279
that you know, it's it was. It was a situation
358
00:20:15.400 --> 00:20:18.799
where when I came walking by, you actually said, hey,
359
00:20:18.799 --> 00:20:21.240
you need a hand because I was by, you know,
360
00:20:21.839 --> 00:20:24.279
and and you guys joined in, and that was nice
361
00:20:24.319 --> 00:20:28.039
to have that a three man team for that size
362
00:20:28.039 --> 00:20:29.880
of that building. I was getting ready to enter there,
363
00:20:30.359 --> 00:20:32.559
and uh know, one that I had had somebody right
364
00:20:32.599 --> 00:20:37.559
there that I trusted was was another big comfort to me. Yeah,
365
00:20:38.400 --> 00:20:41.920
and and so that's probably also something that that also
366
00:20:42.680 --> 00:20:45.240
you know, helped with that any fear level and everything.
367
00:20:45.880 --> 00:20:48.240
But you know, it was funny because it's like you
368
00:20:48.279 --> 00:20:52.759
and I both jel so well together that, uh you know,
369
00:20:52.799 --> 00:20:54.279
we can just look at each other know what each
370
00:20:54.279 --> 00:20:54.960
other is about to do.
371
00:20:55.079 --> 00:20:56.400
Yeah. Well, I saw you walking up with there with
372
00:20:56.400 --> 00:20:59.160
the administrator. I'm like, you're not going in there by yourself?
373
00:20:59.240 --> 00:20:59.400
Right?
374
00:21:00.039 --> 00:21:01.440
Yeah? You need do you need some do you need
375
00:21:01.440 --> 00:21:02.880
somebody to cut you got anybody to go with you?
376
00:21:03.079 --> 00:21:03.279
Yeah?
377
00:21:03.319 --> 00:21:05.440
You're like no. I was like, all right, I'm going yeah.
378
00:21:05.559 --> 00:21:07.599
Al radio to command and told them that we were
379
00:21:07.640 --> 00:21:09.920
I was going to be assistant. You were clearing and
380
00:21:10.000 --> 00:21:11.599
like you said, the troopers that were standing over there
381
00:21:11.640 --> 00:21:11.880
with me.
382
00:21:12.519 --> 00:21:14.799
He came with us, yeah, you know, and yeah, it
383
00:21:14.880 --> 00:21:16.880
was just me and my rifle and uh, but you know,
384
00:21:16.920 --> 00:21:19.000
it's nice to have you and your rifle. And and
385
00:21:19.000 --> 00:21:21.400
and trooper did I don't even know if he had
386
00:21:21.400 --> 00:21:24.440
a rifle. I think he had a pistol. Uh. But
387
00:21:24.440 --> 00:21:26.839
but that's one of those situations, folks. And and uh,
388
00:21:27.079 --> 00:21:30.200
you know, I'm not going to go too far into that,
389
00:21:30.279 --> 00:21:32.640
but we were very proud of the students one and
390
00:21:32.680 --> 00:21:36.160
their reactions because they were ready to go as well.
391
00:21:36.960 --> 00:21:41.440
And uh, you know, so the students of staff, everybody
392
00:21:41.440 --> 00:21:44.079
were taking it seriously. The emotions that we saw when
393
00:21:44.119 --> 00:21:47.599
we came through those doors and kicked those doors through, uh,
394
00:21:47.720 --> 00:21:51.240
because we were moving doors folks by fours, uh and
395
00:21:51.279 --> 00:21:55.480
moving through that building. And and one of the things
396
00:21:55.519 --> 00:21:59.880
I do recall, Joe, that you know, really kind of
397
00:22:00.119 --> 00:22:04.200
taxed my feelings a little bit, were that some of
398
00:22:04.200 --> 00:22:09.079
those sometimes the most I don't know, maybe the things
399
00:22:09.079 --> 00:22:11.599
that you take for granted, which is going to the
400
00:22:11.599 --> 00:22:14.640
restroom when you need to go, those students were stuck
401
00:22:15.279 --> 00:22:19.559
in lockdown. And I exited the build, our building, I
402
00:22:19.599 --> 00:22:22.799
exited the building, We cleared and I was actually walking
403
00:22:22.920 --> 00:22:26.559
back to the vehicle to secure my rifle, and here,
404
00:22:26.599 --> 00:22:28.640
all of a sudden, a couple of windows open, and
405
00:22:28.680 --> 00:22:30.720
the teachers like, hey, I've got some students in here
406
00:22:30.720 --> 00:22:32.839
that really need to go to the restroom, you know.
407
00:22:33.240 --> 00:22:35.240
And that's when we went back and we're able to
408
00:22:35.400 --> 00:22:37.000
you know, get them out of lockdown, to get them
409
00:22:37.039 --> 00:22:40.680
into the restrooms. But just something as small as that.
410
00:22:41.160 --> 00:22:43.480
Yeah, you forget about things like that.
411
00:22:43.599 --> 00:22:47.240
Yeah, yeah, our mind is on a possible shooter. The
412
00:22:47.319 --> 00:22:49.519
last thing on our mind was, hey, yeah, these kids
413
00:22:49.599 --> 00:22:52.519
need to go to the restroom, right, you know. So yeah,
414
00:22:52.559 --> 00:22:54.519
it was. It was one of those things. But one
415
00:22:54.599 --> 00:22:57.839
thing I can say, uh, is that every single law
416
00:22:57.920 --> 00:23:01.799
enforcement officer from all three agencies were responded went directly
417
00:23:01.839 --> 00:23:04.640
into those buildings. Okay, it was not a Uvaldi again,
418
00:23:04.839 --> 00:23:06.640
Euvaldi did not exist in Bedford.
419
00:23:07.039 --> 00:23:09.720
Okay, So well that was I'll I think you know
420
00:23:09.799 --> 00:23:11.359
the story. I'm not going to tell it on here,
421
00:23:11.720 --> 00:23:13.160
but I'll tell you after we get done.
422
00:23:13.400 --> 00:23:15.559
Yeah, and and you know, I appreciate what you said, Joe,
423
00:23:15.519 --> 00:23:18.559
because yeah, my mindset that day was like you know,
424
00:23:18.640 --> 00:23:20.880
I am I am going to go in by myself
425
00:23:21.759 --> 00:23:24.680
and so it was nice because my thought wasn't even hey,
426
00:23:24.799 --> 00:23:26.720
let me pull Joe, because you were kind of like
427
00:23:26.720 --> 00:23:29.319
on a the corner. Yeah, you had a corner security.
428
00:23:29.839 --> 00:23:33.000
I had a quad section because I was covering the
429
00:23:33.079 --> 00:23:38.000
intersection of two sidewalks at the at that intersection, and
430
00:23:38.079 --> 00:23:41.160
I had one, two, three, I had four buildings and
431
00:23:41.200 --> 00:23:43.680
a courtyard that I was covering. Yeah, all from one spot.
432
00:23:43.960 --> 00:23:46.079
Yeah, so it was it was nice. I didn't want
433
00:23:46.079 --> 00:23:47.680
to pull you from that, but you know, we had
434
00:23:47.759 --> 00:23:51.279
so many overlapping dominating fields and a view and everything
435
00:23:51.440 --> 00:23:52.920
right right in.
436
00:23:53.039 --> 00:23:55.240
Yeah. I rotated the officer from the far side of
437
00:23:55.240 --> 00:23:58.400
the campus to my spot. Yeah, take my spot. Worked
438
00:23:58.440 --> 00:24:00.920
well cover and then I rotated him back out when
439
00:24:00.920 --> 00:24:02.880
I came and cleared with you. Yeah.
440
00:24:03.039 --> 00:24:05.559
And I appreciate you you actually reaching out that day, Joe,
441
00:24:05.559 --> 00:24:08.039
because you saw my mindset. My mindset, it's one way
442
00:24:08.119 --> 00:24:12.119
and my brain is totally focused on that threat. And
443
00:24:12.160 --> 00:24:14.319
so you actually had a verbalize to me because I
444
00:24:14.359 --> 00:24:16.240
kind of just glanced over said okay, Joe's there and
445
00:24:17.240 --> 00:24:19.599
didn't even think about, hey, Joe, you want to join me,
446
00:24:19.759 --> 00:24:22.039
you know. So that was cool. So I appreciate that.
447
00:24:23.279 --> 00:24:29.039
I see David Seanfeld, a developmental behavior repeatia atrician at
448
00:24:29.079 --> 00:24:32.160
the Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the director of the
449
00:24:32.279 --> 00:24:36.359
National Center for a School Crisis and Bereavement, said he's
450
00:24:36.359 --> 00:24:39.319
seen similar fears arise when active shooter drills in high
451
00:24:39.359 --> 00:24:43.920
schools are excessive and hyper realistic. Quote, it just gives
452
00:24:43.920 --> 00:24:48.480
me them, sorry, it just gives me them the impression
453
00:24:48.759 --> 00:24:52.319
that there is an inevitable, inevitability of being in a
454
00:24:52.400 --> 00:24:56.200
violent situation, to the point where schools and college campuses
455
00:24:57.039 --> 00:24:59.759
don't want places or perceive safety.
456
00:25:00.640 --> 00:25:06.400
Tractors supply, what are they a parking lot of Tractorsply,
457
00:25:06.480 --> 00:25:07.960
I'm not exactly sure what they had though.
458
00:25:07.839 --> 00:25:10.400
But instead of becoming places where they have to worry
459
00:25:10.400 --> 00:25:13.480
about somebody coming to hurt you or harm you, he said,
460
00:25:13.880 --> 00:25:19.440
the stress can affect academic performance. There's an opportunity costs
461
00:25:19.720 --> 00:25:22.799
when we divert some of our energy towards being vigilant.
462
00:25:23.279 --> 00:25:26.279
If students don't feel as safe, they may not or
463
00:25:26.319 --> 00:25:29.839
they may be less open to meeting new people, less
464
00:25:29.960 --> 00:25:33.240
likely to engage in new thoughts and ideas as well
465
00:25:33.240 --> 00:25:33.960
as in learning.
466
00:25:34.319 --> 00:25:36.920
Yeah, the trauma stilled by a swatting hoax isn't just
467
00:25:37.000 --> 00:25:40.240
born by students, experts say it also hurts their families
468
00:25:40.319 --> 00:25:43.400
and ripples out of their communities. So you have all
469
00:25:43.440 --> 00:25:46.640
the kids who are texting their parents, shild Kraut said,
470
00:25:47.079 --> 00:25:49.160
and you have the parents who think they're not going
471
00:25:49.200 --> 00:25:52.440
to see their kids later. And that's incredible, incredibly traumatizing,
472
00:25:53.119 --> 00:25:55.640
And you don't know what kind of trauma of the
473
00:25:55.640 --> 00:25:58.920
community experience before that moment, of course. So she'ld trap
474
00:25:59.160 --> 00:26:02.759
also remembered being in Uvalde, Texas, a few weeks after
475
00:26:02.799 --> 00:26:05.640
a shooter killed nineteen students and two teachers at rob
476
00:26:05.640 --> 00:26:09.279
Elementary School in twenty twenty two, and literally every time
477
00:26:09.319 --> 00:26:12.400
a siren went off in that community, everybody froze and
478
00:26:12.440 --> 00:26:15.400
they almost looked like they were about to hit the deck.
479
00:26:16.000 --> 00:26:19.400
So even just general community members who are seeing these,
480
00:26:19.839 --> 00:26:22.880
you know, repeated lights and sirens, who are hearing these
481
00:26:22.880 --> 00:26:26.720
sort of rumors spreading about, you know, that still impacts
482
00:26:26.759 --> 00:26:30.880
them because these are community wide tragedies. So Schildkraut said
483
00:26:30.880 --> 00:26:33.519
that more could be done at the federal level to
484
00:26:33.599 --> 00:26:38.000
prevent mass shootings and suggested that this inaction has created
485
00:26:38.039 --> 00:26:41.799
an atmosphere of acceptance and that has now signaled to
486
00:26:41.880 --> 00:26:44.440
people that we can, you know, also threaten a mass
487
00:26:44.440 --> 00:26:48.119
shooting and will somehow be okay, you know, like it's
488
00:26:48.200 --> 00:26:51.440
okay to disrupt learning and it's okay to cause trouble
489
00:26:51.799 --> 00:26:55.640
and it's incredibly you know, incredibly harmful, she said. So
490
00:26:55.720 --> 00:27:00.359
we can't underscore enough that this is not a joke, Joe,
491
00:27:00.400 --> 00:27:02.880
I guess this is about the time where we need
492
00:27:02.920 --> 00:27:04.720
to go ahead and pay tribute to a falling officer
493
00:27:04.759 --> 00:27:05.359
of Canine.
494
00:27:06.000 --> 00:27:09.039
Yes, Sir, this week, we would like to pay tribute
495
00:27:09.079 --> 00:27:15.000
to Sergeant Lee Sorenson from the Thurmington Garland Police Department
496
00:27:15.039 --> 00:27:18.519
in Utah. End of watch was August the seventeenth, twenty
497
00:27:18.559 --> 00:27:24.240
twenty five. Sergeant Lee Sorensen and police officer Eric Estrata
498
00:27:24.759 --> 00:27:27.319
were shot and killed while responding to multiple nine to
499
00:27:27.319 --> 00:27:29.440
one one hang up calls at a residence near seven
500
00:27:29.519 --> 00:27:33.400
hundred North and two hundred East in trent Monton. I
501
00:27:33.440 --> 00:27:37.000
think I'm saying that right after nine pm, one of
502
00:27:37.000 --> 00:27:39.359
the officers was taken to a residence in the home
503
00:27:39.559 --> 00:27:43.759
about a domestic dispute. A man exited the house with
504
00:27:43.799 --> 00:27:47.000
a gun, open fire and mortally wounded the officer. Another
505
00:27:47.039 --> 00:27:50.559
officer arrived his back up and was also shot and killed.
506
00:27:50.920 --> 00:27:54.119
A deputy and a Canon from the Box Elder County
507
00:27:54.119 --> 00:27:58.640
Sheriff's Office was hospitalized with non life threatening injuries after
508
00:27:58.680 --> 00:28:03.359
being shot while in his troll vehicle. An additional officer
509
00:28:03.440 --> 00:28:06.799
arrived by standers convinced the man to surrender. He was
510
00:28:06.920 --> 00:28:10.640
arrested in charge with aggravated murder. Sergeant Swordsen had served
511
00:28:10.640 --> 00:28:15.000
with the Trentmond and Garland Police Department for sixteen years,
512
00:28:15.000 --> 00:28:17.000
and he survived by his wife and three children.
513
00:28:18.039 --> 00:28:20.960
Well, we definitely pay tribute. I think it's tremonton.
514
00:28:21.200 --> 00:28:21.599
Yeah.
515
00:28:21.680 --> 00:28:23.400
And the only reason I say that is because I
516
00:28:23.440 --> 00:28:25.279
talked about that while you were gone for the last
517
00:28:25.319 --> 00:28:27.720
couple of weeks. I didn't talk. I didn't pay tribute.
518
00:28:27.720 --> 00:28:29.799
I believe what I did was I talked about the
519
00:28:29.880 --> 00:28:30.720
ambush incident.
520
00:28:32.119 --> 00:28:34.359
Sorry, so mispronunciation.
521
00:28:34.640 --> 00:28:37.039
We definitely pay tribute to those officers, as well as
522
00:28:37.079 --> 00:28:38.920
all the officers and canons who have fallen in the
523
00:28:38.960 --> 00:28:41.960
line of duty. And Joe, that about wraps it up
524
00:28:42.000 --> 00:28:45.039
for this week, and we are going to be by
525
00:28:45.079 --> 00:28:47.720
ourselves here shortly because I think you have one getting
526
00:28:47.759 --> 00:28:52.160
off if they haven't already gotten off, so we'll be monitoring.
527
00:28:52.240 --> 00:28:55.480
But folks, we appreciate you, and we always want you
528
00:28:55.519 --> 00:28:58.880
to remember where your friends were, your neighbors. But most
529
00:28:58.960 --> 00:29:01.960
of all, we are your police department, and we thank
530
00:29:02.000 --> 00:29:04.519
you for your support. I'm Captain Robert Kimbrol, and I'm
531
00:29:04.559 --> 00:29:06.759
sorry there doing thank you.
1
00:00:11.880 --> 00:00:15.039
Coming to you from hometown America, the Land of the
2
00:00:15.080 --> 00:00:19.199
Free and the home of the Brave, Bedford, Virginia. Welcome
3
00:00:19.239 --> 00:00:22.079
to cop Talk. I'm Captain Robert Timbrel and I'm Sergeant
4
00:00:22.120 --> 00:00:26.039
Joe Dowley. And folks, we still have a few seats
5
00:00:26.120 --> 00:00:29.199
left in our Citizen Police Academy that will start on
6
00:00:29.199 --> 00:00:33.679
September twenty fifth, twenty twenty five, and run through November twentieth,
7
00:00:33.679 --> 00:00:37.039
twenty twenty five. The Citizen Police Academy will meet once
8
00:00:37.119 --> 00:00:40.799
a week on Thursday evenings from six pm to eight pm.
9
00:00:41.240 --> 00:00:44.079
This is an opportunity for Bedford residents to get up,
10
00:00:44.439 --> 00:00:47.000
you know, up and close and all up, you know,
11
00:00:47.039 --> 00:00:51.159
close and personal Joe actually you know, and actually Joe.
12
00:00:51.240 --> 00:00:53.079
It gives them an idea of kind of what it's
13
00:00:53.159 --> 00:00:56.840
like to be an officer, you know. And folks, you know,
14
00:00:56.880 --> 00:00:59.840
if you are not in the best of shape, well
15
00:01:00.520 --> 00:01:03.200
don't be concerned about that, okay, because the Citizen's Police
16
00:01:03.200 --> 00:01:07.000
Academy it's not designed to test your physical ability. Okay.
17
00:01:07.040 --> 00:01:10.400
We won't be doing things like foot pursuit challenges or
18
00:01:10.719 --> 00:01:13.480
having you roll around on Matt's teaching you defensive tactics,
19
00:01:13.599 --> 00:01:16.519
or even running you up and downstairs. Okay, that's not
20
00:01:16.599 --> 00:01:19.159
what we're trying to do with this academy. Okay, so
21
00:01:19.159 --> 00:01:20.959
we're not going to beat you up in it. The
22
00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:24.000

as possible for you so that you can have you know,

25
00:01:32.480 --> 00:01:36.879
takes is an open mind, a bit of curiosity, and
26
00:01:36.959 --> 00:01:40.280
a desire to have well, have fun. Okay, that's what
27
00:01:40.319 --> 00:01:43.400
we're all about. And yes, if you have ever wondered
28
00:01:43.640 --> 00:01:46.560
what it is like to be a cop, you will
29
00:01:46.560 --> 00:01:50.359
have fun at our Citizens Police Academy. It is designed
30
00:01:50.400 --> 00:01:53.560

00:01:54.359 --> 00:01:58.280
multiple scenarios with you, you know. And on the flip side,
32
00:01:58.640 --> 00:02:01.280

00:02:04.480 --> 00:02:07.879
serious nature of law enforcement and you will participate in
35
00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:13.000
hands on exercises using role players and BPD officers will
36
00:02:13.039 --> 00:02:15.840
be trading places with you and they will become the
37
00:02:15.919 --> 00:02:18.680
role players acting as the violators while you get to
38
00:02:18.680 --> 00:02:22.560
be the cops. So you know, you will learn about
39
00:02:22.599 --> 00:02:25.840
traffic radar operation and you will get to be the
40
00:02:25.879 --> 00:02:28.960
officer actually making the traffic stop on one of our
41
00:02:29.000 --> 00:02:32.319
police officers who will be acting as the violator, and
42
00:02:32.400 --> 00:02:34.560
you will get to participate in making a high risk
43
00:02:34.639 --> 00:02:37.199
stop on a vehicle whose occupants are wanted for an
44
00:02:37.240 --> 00:02:40.319
armed robbery. Will they be you know? Will they actually
45
00:02:40.319 --> 00:02:44.479
be peaceful with you and cooperate? Will they obey your
46
00:02:44.479 --> 00:02:49.159
commands or will they challenge your authority like it's done
47
00:02:49.199 --> 00:02:53.840
so many times now? On even simple traffic stops. You
48
00:02:53.879 --> 00:02:58.000
will discover very quickly how stressful and scary it can
49
00:02:58.039 --> 00:03:00.719
be when you are the one having fear of building
50
00:03:01.080 --> 00:03:06.599
looking for an active shooter. Yes, and even in simulated scenarios, folks,
51
00:03:07.199 --> 00:03:09.319
you will get a taste of the level of stress
52
00:03:09.840 --> 00:03:12.479
and you'll get to challenge yourself to overcome the fear
53
00:03:13.120 --> 00:03:17.639
of the unknown, the fear of not knowing if the
54
00:03:17.639 --> 00:03:21.199
shooter is waiting for you around the next corner. Okay,
55
00:03:21.759 --> 00:03:25.159
line and wait just for you to come around the corner.
56
00:03:26.439 --> 00:03:29.000
Do you have what it takes? Do you want to
57
00:03:29.039 --> 00:03:29.479
find out?
58
00:03:31.039 --> 00:03:31.240
You know?
59
00:03:31.280 --> 00:03:35.319
Are you ready to challenge yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally
60
00:03:36.080 --> 00:03:39.280
and prove to yourself that you have the courage to
61
00:03:39.360 --> 00:03:43.719
push on and move forward knowing that the next thing
62
00:03:43.759 --> 00:03:48.360
that you do maybe your last.
63
00:03:47.960 --> 00:03:49.280
That's pretty deep.
64
00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:52.199
Yeah, yeah, you know. It'll be fun though, And the
65
00:03:52.240 --> 00:03:54.319
main thing that folks need to remember is it's all
66
00:03:54.360 --> 00:03:56.599
safe because we're the role players, you know.
67
00:03:58.039 --> 00:03:58.719
And you know.
68
00:03:58.840 --> 00:04:00.400
The other thing, folks is if you want to take
69
00:04:00.400 --> 00:04:03.520
a step into our world and actually see if you
70
00:04:03.560 --> 00:04:06.520
can handle it, well, then join us. Okay, join us
71
00:04:06.520 --> 00:04:09.520
at the BPD Citizens Police Academy, and you will get
72
00:04:09.560 --> 00:04:12.360
to experience what ninety nine percent of the people on
73
00:04:12.400 --> 00:04:15.879
the planet never get to experience, and that is what
74
00:04:15.919 --> 00:04:18.720
it's like to be a cop, you know, a law
75
00:04:18.759 --> 00:04:24.240
enforcement professional. The highs and the lows, the complete opposite
76
00:04:24.319 --> 00:04:27.680
ends of the spectrum. And you will be surprised how
77
00:04:27.720 --> 00:04:31.120
even though you know that you are in a safe environment,
78
00:04:32.800 --> 00:04:34.800
you know that the role players who are playing the
79
00:04:34.800 --> 00:04:38.519
part of the criminals are BPD officers and staff members. Well,
80
00:04:38.560 --> 00:04:42.000
we can still get you, you know, get your breathing
81
00:04:42.079 --> 00:04:47.040
rate up, get your heart rate to increase, and your
82
00:04:47.079 --> 00:04:51.279
stress level to rise. During our force on force style scenarios.
83
00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:57.519
You will also learn how three minutes three minutes is
84
00:04:57.560 --> 00:05:00.759
actually a long time when you need assistance and the
85
00:05:00.759 --> 00:05:05.519
closest backup officer is three minutes away. And now consider
86
00:05:05.800 --> 00:05:08.639
that your closest back them in Bedford maybe fifteen minutes
87
00:05:08.720 --> 00:05:11.560
or more away. Okay, and I have had times during
88
00:05:11.600 --> 00:05:15.000
my career where my closest backup was over forty five
89
00:05:15.040 --> 00:05:19.000
minutes away when I worked for a state agency. And
90
00:05:19.079 --> 00:05:21.120
for any of you that do not feel like three
91
00:05:21.160 --> 00:05:23.800
minutes is a long time, well, join us at the
92
00:05:23.839 --> 00:05:27.439

93
00:05:27.519 --> 00:05:32.600
happen in three minutes. And it will take you actually
94
00:05:32.680 --> 00:05:35.360
less than three minutes to fill out your online application

do is simply fill in the twelve blanks on the
103
00:06:06.199 --> 00:06:09.439
extremely short and easy to use form and then hit
104
00:06:09.439 --> 00:06:13.920

105
00:06:14.079 --> 00:06:17.839

00:06:17.920 --> 00:06:21.240

00:06:24.319 --> 00:06:27.079
Police Department at two to fifteen East Main Street and
109
00:06:27.120 --> 00:06:32.240
fill in an application. We would love you to join us. Joe,
110
00:06:32.279 --> 00:06:34.800
you know, I've actually talked a long time here and
111
00:06:34.879 --> 00:06:37.680
talked enough actually, So what's up, you know in the
112
00:06:37.720 --> 00:06:40.560
world of you know, the recent drone warnings that we've
113
00:06:40.560 --> 00:06:41.399
been hearing about.
114
00:06:41.759 --> 00:06:46.000
Yeah, there's been more than three thousand drone events near
115
00:06:46.160 --> 00:06:50.839
American airports since just since twenty twenty one, and those
116
00:06:50.879 --> 00:06:54.560
have included eleven aircrafts this year alone that have reportedly
117
00:06:54.600 --> 00:06:59.040
taken evasive action to avoid collisions. These drone incidents have
118
00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:02.600
caused significant flight delays at times near major airports, and
119
00:07:02.639 --> 00:07:07.560
in two circumstances, drones collided with aircraft conducting critical response
120
00:07:07.600 --> 00:07:12.079
operations during emergencies in California and Texas this year. As
121
00:07:12.079 --> 00:07:15.000
we've discussed here on cop talk about our concerns about
122
00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:18.240
the intentional use of drones for attacks, we also want
123
00:07:18.240 --> 00:07:20.439
to look at the concerns of things like major sporting
124
00:07:20.480 --> 00:07:24.040
events such as the upcoming twenty twenty six World Cup.
125
00:07:24.560 --> 00:07:27.160
Yeah, and Joe, you and I have actually discussed this,
126
00:07:27.680 --> 00:07:29.680
and like you said, we have shared a little of
127
00:07:29.680 --> 00:07:32.519
our concern with our audience here on cop Talk, and
128
00:07:32.560 --> 00:07:35.879
to summarize for our listeners, we feel that immediate action
129
00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:38.959
needs to be taken by Congress to allow federal, state,
130
00:07:39.120 --> 00:07:43.560
and local departments. They need to allow us full authority
131
00:07:43.600 --> 00:07:46.240
to take down drones when we have an objective reason
132
00:07:46.519 --> 00:07:48.199
to believe that the drone may be a danger to
133
00:07:48.439 --> 00:07:51.600
the public. Okay, and it appears that we are now
134
00:07:51.680 --> 00:07:54.199
actually being joined by friends in Congress. Did you just that?
135
00:07:54.360 --> 00:07:57.920
But legislation like normal is moving forward way too slowly
136
00:07:58.000 --> 00:08:00.000
for what I feel is a threat to our national secuity.
137
00:08:00.560 --> 00:08:03.839
Yeah, that's right, Rob. The senators and administrative officials are
138
00:08:03.839 --> 00:08:06.800
now saying that Congress needs to change laws to toughen
139
00:08:06.839 --> 00:08:09.839
the penalties for drone use and to get federal agencies
140
00:08:09.879 --> 00:08:12.839
new expanded authority to address drones that may be used
141
00:08:12.839 --> 00:08:16.319
to threaten the public or events. Congress in twenty eighteen
142
00:08:16.360 --> 00:08:19.800
expanded authority of the Justice Department and the Department of
143
00:08:19.800 --> 00:08:24.000
Homeland Security to disable or destroy threatening drones, and that
144
00:08:24.279 --> 00:08:29.240
authority has been temporarily extended. A new legislation would expand
145
00:08:29.279 --> 00:08:32.759
federal coverage for airports and critical infrastructures like power plants,
146
00:08:32.799 --> 00:08:36.840
oil refineries, or chemical facilities, and high risk prison of transports.
147
00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:40.000
It would also allow states and local law enforcement to
148
00:08:40.080 --> 00:08:43.279
directly take down drones without waiting for federal authorities.
149
00:08:43.440 --> 00:08:45.919
Yeah, and Joe, you know, as you know, it's been
150
00:08:46.039 --> 00:08:51.440
kind of silly because they keep on repeatedly temporarily extending that, right,
151
00:08:51.639 --> 00:08:53.919
why not just go ahead and make the legislation, right,
152
00:08:53.960 --> 00:08:58.159
you know, But since twenty eighteen, the Secret Service has
153
00:08:58.200 --> 00:09:02.039
actually tracked hundreds of drones by relating temporary flight restrictions
154
00:09:02.039 --> 00:09:05.320
that protect the President and others. And while the FBI
155
00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:09.039
and Justice Department said drones used as espionage technology within
156
00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:12.080
the United States is also increasing. So in the last
157
00:09:12.120 --> 00:09:15.360
six months of twenty twenty four, over twenty seven thousand
158
00:09:15.440 --> 00:09:18.480
drones were detected within five hundred meters of the US
159
00:09:18.600 --> 00:09:22.200
southern border. And Joe, you know, there's also those incidents,
160
00:09:22.279 --> 00:09:24.320
right that occurred at like the NFL game in the
161
00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:25.120
Boston Marathon.
162
00:09:25.240 --> 00:09:28.039
Yeah, that's right. Man pled guilty in June as a
163
00:09:28.039 --> 00:09:31.159
matter of fact, after he was charged with violating the
164
00:09:31.200 --> 00:09:34.559
Defense Airspace after he flew a drone over the NFL
165
00:09:34.799 --> 00:09:39.440
AFC Championship game in Baltimore January. In September of Auston
166
00:09:39.480 --> 00:09:42.120
man was charged with the unlawful flying drone near the
167
00:09:42.120 --> 00:09:45.000
finish line of the April twenty twenty four Boston Marathon,
168
00:09:45.399 --> 00:09:48.000
which prompted a law enforcement to seize at mid air
169
00:09:48.120 --> 00:09:48.639
and landed.
170
00:09:50.039 --> 00:09:54.639
Well, you know, so now that we've you know, gotten
171
00:09:55.039 --> 00:09:58.519
the drone thing out here on the table, I know,
172
00:09:58.600 --> 00:10:00.840
Joe that you don't really want to talk too much
173
00:10:00.840 --> 00:10:02.840
about it on an open audience, even though our audience
174
00:10:02.879 --> 00:10:04.879
is a little bit different than most audiences, you know.
175
00:10:05.879 --> 00:10:07.840
But I think we'll leave it at that, Joe. You know,
176
00:10:07.879 --> 00:10:10.240
we won't talk too much. But I mean, even Joe,
177
00:10:11.360 --> 00:10:13.759
if you didn't have an elaborate drone and you just
178
00:10:13.799 --> 00:10:16.200
wanted to fly a drone into a crowd and just
179
00:10:16.320 --> 00:10:18.840
hit somebody with it, it could cause injury, you know,
180
00:10:19.320 --> 00:10:20.279
maybe even a death.
181
00:10:20.720 --> 00:10:20.919
You know.
182
00:10:21.600 --> 00:10:25.279
So so let's let's move on and talk about something
183
00:10:25.320 --> 00:10:28.480
else that is very concerning, and that is that last month,
184
00:10:29.080 --> 00:10:33.559
as colleges and universities prepared to resume classes, students at
185
00:10:33.600 --> 00:10:37.840
nearly two dozen campuses got a grim welcome, which was
186
00:10:37.879 --> 00:10:42.480
an emergency alert, and one one student points out that
187
00:10:42.480 --> 00:10:45.879
the emergency alert said active shooter on my campus right now,
188
00:10:45.960 --> 00:10:49.240
that that student said, which was a theater student at
189
00:10:49.240 --> 00:10:52.879
the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and that student had
190
00:10:52.919 --> 00:10:56.159
posted that actually on x during the subsequent lockdown, adding
191
00:10:56.320 --> 00:10:58.600
we can't live like this, you know, Joe, And I
192
00:10:58.600 --> 00:11:01.679
can kind of relate with that. I agree with that student,
193
00:11:01.799 --> 00:11:05.759
you know. And I can just read that quote that
194
00:11:05.759 --> 00:11:09.120
that student put out there, Joe, and can fill the fear.
195
00:11:10.440 --> 00:11:12.519
That that person was feeling. It summed up very well
196
00:11:12.519 --> 00:11:13.559
in such a short statement.
197
00:11:13.720 --> 00:11:17.639
Yeah, absolutely, you know. And in seventeen states over the
198
00:11:17.679 --> 00:11:21.799
past two weeks, students returning to college campuses were confronted
199
00:11:21.840 --> 00:11:25.879
with active shooter alerts and lockdowns. They were all false alarms,
200
00:11:25.960 --> 00:11:29.440
and an online group taking credit for calling in the
201
00:11:29.480 --> 00:11:33.519
fake reports to law enforcement. All right, and all told,
202
00:11:33.559 --> 00:11:37.120
there were at least twenty two swatting hoaxes as American
203
00:11:37.120 --> 00:11:40.360
colleges during the last week of August and early September.
204
00:11:40.799 --> 00:11:44.840
Among those hit were Auburn University in Alabama, three colleges
205
00:11:44.879 --> 00:11:47.759
in Georgia, all of which received false reports on the
206
00:11:47.799 --> 00:11:52.600
same day, and Villanova University in Pennsylvania, which was swatted
207
00:11:52.639 --> 00:11:56.679
twice and most of the calls actually involved an armed
208
00:11:56.679 --> 00:12:02.200
person in the library. Some actually featured gunshot in the background. So,
209
00:12:02.840 --> 00:12:04.320
you know, Joe, what what do you what do you
210
00:12:04.360 --> 00:12:04.919
think about that?
211
00:12:05.840 --> 00:12:07.399
They're getting pretty elaborate.
212
00:12:07.639 --> 00:12:10.679
Yeah, you know, to add, yeah, we were just talking.
213
00:12:11.039 --> 00:12:13.799
It was kind of weird because we were just talking
214
00:12:13.840 --> 00:12:17.000
about voice changers, you know, right before the podcast and
215
00:12:17.039 --> 00:12:21.120
then yeah, and then to see that they're using.
216
00:12:21.120 --> 00:12:26.200
The same technology, yeah, for a nefarious purpose. Yeah, absolutely
217
00:12:26.240 --> 00:12:26.919
more convincing.
218
00:12:27.279 --> 00:12:31.039
And Joe just quickly on that, you know, as as
219
00:12:31.480 --> 00:12:33.440
both people that have worked the board and dispatch in
220
00:12:33.440 --> 00:12:36.720
the past. What does that do to a dispatcher? What
221
00:12:36.720 --> 00:12:39.559
what kind of information then does that dispatcher relate to
222
00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:40.080
the officer.
223
00:12:40.879 --> 00:12:42.399
Well, they need to tell them what they hear and
224
00:12:42.519 --> 00:12:43.720
what's going on in the background.
225
00:12:43.799 --> 00:12:46.480
Yeah, you know that that that that so the dispatcher
226
00:12:46.519 --> 00:12:48.840
can be like, you know, hey, I heard shots in
227
00:12:48.879 --> 00:12:52.799
the background right right, and now these officers are arriving
228
00:12:52.840 --> 00:12:57.200
on scene with bad information, you know, and even before that,
229
00:12:57.279 --> 00:13:00.480
I guess Joe, the officers are actually having to spawn
230
00:13:01.919 --> 00:13:05.559
at a very fast and you know, a pace to
231
00:13:06.600 --> 00:13:10.519
expedite their response. Well, which puts all those motorists, all
232
00:13:10.519 --> 00:13:13.639
those pedestrians, everybody else, that even an increased danger. And
233
00:13:14.080 --> 00:13:17.159
can you blame law enforcement because law enforcements responding to
234
00:13:18.000 --> 00:13:21.720
shots being heard by dispatch over the phone, right you know?
235
00:13:22.279 --> 00:13:23.200
I mean, so there you go.
236
00:13:23.360 --> 00:13:27.120
Right, Well, just a couple of years ago, they just
237
00:13:27.440 --> 00:13:32.039
passed the law as far as enacting tougher penalties for
238
00:13:32.159 --> 00:13:36.399
these swatting calls and these hoaxes. So I'm hoping these
239
00:13:36.440 --> 00:13:40.960
people are are getting caught and having to pay the price,
240
00:13:41.000 --> 00:13:41.639
so to speak.
241
00:13:41.799 --> 00:13:44.879
Yeah, you know, just so, I guess you know, there's
242
00:13:44.879 --> 00:13:47.360
more to be said about the response and even the
243
00:13:47.480 --> 00:13:50.320
national media taking part of this, right yeah, In.
244
00:13:50.279 --> 00:13:54.120
Some ways, these false alarms are triggering a massive police
245
00:13:54.159 --> 00:13:58.519
response and nationwide news alerts. They can be nearly as
246
00:13:58.559 --> 00:14:03.559
psychologically damaging as a shooter. Experts say. The challenges with
247
00:14:03.639 --> 00:14:05.600
these hopes is that when you're in the moment, you
248
00:14:05.639 --> 00:14:08.799
don't know if it's real or not. The individuals who
249
00:14:08.799 --> 00:14:11.320
are experiencing it, the fear of the anxiety to worry,
250
00:14:11.360 --> 00:14:13.840
all of these feelings are very real. All of these
251
00:14:13.840 --> 00:14:18.039
things can reduce psychological trauma. The burden is particularly acute
252
00:14:18.039 --> 00:14:21.000
in gen Z, the first generation for whom gun violence
253
00:14:21.080 --> 00:14:24.240
is the number one cause of death. Kids today have
254
00:14:24.360 --> 00:14:27.399
grown up with lockdown drills, and by the time they
255
00:14:27.399 --> 00:14:30.720
get to college, they may be out of practice. So
256
00:14:31.320 --> 00:14:34.960
most colleges and universities don't typically conduct drills, let alone
257
00:14:35.080 --> 00:14:40.720
officers offer thought thorough emergency response training. Students will be
258
00:14:40.759 --> 00:14:43.039
relying on the skills that they've learned in high school
259
00:14:43.159 --> 00:14:46.960
as well as elementary and middle school, but as we know,
260
00:14:47.080 --> 00:14:51.039
skills can degrade when not being used. These could potentially
261
00:14:51.039 --> 00:14:54.240
make students and staff on college campuses more vulnerable and
262
00:14:54.360 --> 00:14:55.519
less prepared to respond.
263
00:14:56.320 --> 00:15:00.320
Yeah, school swatting in they've actually accelerated in recent year years,
264
00:15:00.879 --> 00:15:04.159
but exact figures are actually hard to come by, And
265
00:15:04.240 --> 00:15:08.559
the nonprofit k through twelve School shooting database actually tracked
266
00:15:08.600 --> 00:15:12.480
eight hundred and fifty three swating incidents between January twenty
267
00:15:12.519 --> 00:15:15.600
twenty three and June of twenty twenty four. Ohly cow,
268
00:15:15.919 --> 00:15:18.639
that's a lot then, Yeah, and you know the most
269
00:15:18.679 --> 00:15:22.200
recent data available is that actual data, Joe, So I
270
00:15:22.200 --> 00:15:26.240
couldn't pull anything you know, more recent, but just from
271
00:15:26.279 --> 00:15:29.360
January twenty twenty twenty three to June twenty twenty four,
272
00:15:29.399 --> 00:15:32.679
eight hundred and fifty three Joe. You know, so in
273
00:15:32.720 --> 00:15:35.639
twenty twenty three, the FBI actually created a database to
274
00:15:35.639 --> 00:15:38.320
track swatting incidents, but it's not open to the public,
275
00:15:38.320 --> 00:15:40.159
so of course we're not going to reveal any numbers
276
00:15:40.240 --> 00:15:43.200
from that. And to tell you truth, Jow, I have
277
00:15:43.320 --> 00:15:45.639
not gone to that database and actually looked at that.
278
00:15:46.759 --> 00:15:50.320
But swatting hoax has actually first made the FBI's radar
279
00:15:50.399 --> 00:15:53.639
in two thousand and eight, but they ramped up considerably
280
00:15:53.759 --> 00:15:57.679
after the pandemic and alongside the number of gun crimes
281
00:15:57.879 --> 00:15:59.039
in and around campuses.
282
00:16:01.960 --> 00:16:03.919
You know, I was just doing some maths real quick
283
00:16:03.960 --> 00:16:09.919
while you were talking. That's sixteen months from January twenty
284
00:16:09.960 --> 00:16:13.519
three to June of twenty four, and at eight hundred
285
00:16:13.519 --> 00:16:16.200
and fifty three incidents between that time, that's an average
286
00:16:16.240 --> 00:16:20.840
of fifty three incidents a month. See, that's more than
287
00:16:20.879 --> 00:16:25.559
one a day. Yeah, it's a lot, man, It's ridiculous.
288
00:16:26.320 --> 00:16:31.919
Let's see, swatting hoaxes that trigger a large or heavy
289
00:16:32.120 --> 00:16:35.559
law enforcement present may further traumatize students who grow up
290
00:16:35.600 --> 00:16:38.759
in a violent community or have negative association with the police.
291
00:16:39.159 --> 00:16:42.919
As emergency response also raises the risk of psych physical
292
00:16:43.440 --> 00:16:47.200
danger when police cars racing to the scene. Sometimes crashes
293
00:16:47.240 --> 00:16:50.440
and other injuries can result. Two students of the University
294
00:16:50.480 --> 00:16:53.639
of Southern of South Carolina sustained minor injuries during an
295
00:16:53.639 --> 00:16:57.000
evacuation of a library building following a false active shooter
296
00:16:57.080 --> 00:16:59.799
report on January or August twenty twenty four.
297
00:17:00.519 --> 00:17:04.319
Yeah, and those hoaxes tax first responders, diverting them from
298
00:17:04.400 --> 00:17:08.279
real emergencies and raising their risk of post traumatic stress.
299
00:17:08.880 --> 00:17:13.200
And Jacqueline Shildkraut, a school safety expert, says that even
300
00:17:13.240 --> 00:17:16.960
your best training doesn't mean that your first responders are
301
00:17:17.000 --> 00:17:19.920
not going to be impacted. Your body is going to
302
00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:23.960
do what it's trained to do. You're adrenaline, Well, it's
303
00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:27.720
going through the roof, and at some point you can
304
00:17:27.720 --> 00:17:31.680
come down from that. But that repeated adrenaline over and
305
00:17:31.759 --> 00:17:36.079
over again it could be very taxing. And students who
306
00:17:36.200 --> 00:17:38.839
arrive on campus in August, looking forward to a new
307
00:17:38.839 --> 00:17:42.599
school year, only to find themselves locked down and fearing
308
00:17:42.640 --> 00:17:45.480
an active shooter may no longer feel safe on campus.
309
00:17:46.160 --> 00:17:50.279
An active shooter alert during the middle of opening masks
310
00:17:50.279 --> 00:17:54.359
for students, a Villa Nova freshman posted on x during
311
00:17:54.400 --> 00:17:58.559
in August twenty first lockdown. Everyone is hiding, Please just
312
00:17:58.640 --> 00:17:59.559
keep me in your thoughts.
313
00:18:00.160 --> 00:18:02.759
Scared and see, like we went to the one that
314
00:18:02.880 --> 00:18:06.000
was called in Here a couple of years ago, and
315
00:18:06.920 --> 00:18:09.359
at the time the school that we went to, and
316
00:18:09.400 --> 00:18:11.319
I was working and you were working, and we both
317
00:18:11.359 --> 00:18:14.920
responded with our friends from the Sheriff's office and the
318
00:18:14.920 --> 00:18:17.559
state police. My son was at the school that day.
319
00:18:18.759 --> 00:18:21.880
He told me later a couple of days after the incident,
320
00:18:21.920 --> 00:18:23.960
he said, that's he said, that is probably the most
321
00:18:24.000 --> 00:18:27.640
scared that I've ever been in my life. And not
322
00:18:27.839 --> 00:18:31.000
knowing if it was actively going on or not until
323
00:18:31.000 --> 00:18:33.240
we got there, you have to presume that it is.
324
00:18:33.279 --> 00:18:37.079
You can't assume that it's not. As a parent, you know,
325
00:18:37.119 --> 00:18:41.279
you're torn between you know, where's my child? Is he safe?
326
00:18:41.720 --> 00:18:44.839
And I have an assignment to do. But I did
327
00:18:45.000 --> 00:18:47.119
know where he would be at that time. And when
328
00:18:47.119 --> 00:18:49.160
I did see him through the window of one of
329
00:18:49.160 --> 00:18:51.519
the buildings, we hadn't checked yet that they were locked.
330
00:18:53.119 --> 00:18:56.240
Actually I saw him after we cleared it. Uh, he said, well,
331
00:18:56.279 --> 00:18:59.160
I saw you, and I knew everything was okay. Yes,
332
00:18:59.240 --> 00:19:01.039
So it made me feel good that he has that
333
00:19:01.119 --> 00:19:04.599
much confidence in me, But it made me feel awful
334
00:19:04.799 --> 00:19:06.799
that I would imagine a lot of these other students
335
00:19:06.839 --> 00:19:09.039
are feeling the same way. Yeah, Like, what do you
336
00:19:09.039 --> 00:19:10.759
remember from high school? We'll be like, I remember that
337
00:19:10.759 --> 00:19:12.759
time we had a lockdown because we thought somebody was
338
00:19:12.799 --> 00:19:14.599
an active shooter was on the campus, and that scared
339
00:19:14.599 --> 00:19:15.119
the hell out of it.
340
00:19:15.559 --> 00:19:18.359
Yeah, we were. We were flowing through that school with
341
00:19:18.359 --> 00:19:20.759
patrol rafts. Joe. If you remember, I came over with
342
00:19:20.799 --> 00:19:23.480
that lady with the key and said, Joe, because I
343
00:19:23.519 --> 00:19:25.480
was by myself, so I said, Joe, can you come
344
00:19:25.480 --> 00:19:27.839
with me? And I think you and maybe a trooper yep,
345
00:19:28.000 --> 00:19:33.839
came with science building and you know, it was it
346
00:19:33.920 --> 00:19:38.440
was one of those situations where it was a strange
347
00:19:38.480 --> 00:19:40.960
situation because I actually had no fear at that time.
348
00:19:41.079 --> 00:19:44.680
But the reason for that is one, we weren't actively
349
00:19:44.720 --> 00:19:49.839
hearing gunshots, right, Okay, so that's one thing. But number two,
350
00:19:52.319 --> 00:19:55.279
you know, the decision was made long ago in my
351
00:19:55.400 --> 00:19:58.599
mind that no matter what happens and what happens to me,
352
00:19:59.559 --> 00:20:03.039
I'm better trained, better prepared, better equipped than any student
353
00:20:03.160 --> 00:20:05.519
or teacher in that school, Joe. So we've just got
354
00:20:05.519 --> 00:20:07.119
to do what we've got to do. Yeah, you know,
355
00:20:07.240 --> 00:20:10.480
I'm just talking about from no, no, Yeah, I wasn't
356
00:20:10.519 --> 00:20:12.839
commenting on any of that. I was just saying that
357
00:20:12.839 --> 00:20:15.279
that you know, it's it was. It was a situation
358
00:20:15.400 --> 00:20:18.799
where when I came walking by, you actually said, hey,
359
00:20:18.799 --> 00:20:21.240
you need a hand because I was by, you know,
360
00:20:21.839 --> 00:20:24.279
and and you guys joined in, and that was nice
361
00:20:24.319 --> 00:20:28.039
to have that a three man team for that size
362
00:20:28.039 --> 00:20:29.880
of that building. I was getting ready to enter there,
363
00:20:30.359 --> 00:20:32.559
and uh know, one that I had had somebody right
364
00:20:32.599 --> 00:20:37.559
there that I trusted was was another big comfort to me. Yeah,
365
00:20:38.400 --> 00:20:41.920
and and so that's probably also something that that also
366
00:20:42.680 --> 00:20:45.240
you know, helped with that any fear level and everything.
367
00:20:45.880 --> 00:20:48.240
But you know, it was funny because it's like you
368
00:20:48.279 --> 00:20:52.759
and I both jel so well together that, uh you know,
369
00:20:52.799 --> 00:20:54.279
we can just look at each other know what each
370
00:20:54.279 --> 00:20:54.960
other is about to do.
371
00:20:55.079 --> 00:20:56.400
Yeah. Well, I saw you walking up with there with
372
00:20:56.400 --> 00:20:59.160
the administrator. I'm like, you're not going in there by yourself?
373
00:20:59.240 --> 00:20:59.400
Right?
374
00:21:00.039 --> 00:21:01.440
Yeah? You need do you need some do you need
375
00:21:01.440 --> 00:21:02.880
somebody to cut you got anybody to go with you?
376
00:21:03.079 --> 00:21:03.279
Yeah?
377
00:21:03.319 --> 00:21:05.440
You're like no. I was like, all right, I'm going yeah.
378
00:21:05.559 --> 00:21:07.599
Al radio to command and told them that we were
379
00:21:07.640 --> 00:21:09.920
I was going to be assistant. You were clearing and
380
00:21:10.000 --> 00:21:11.599
like you said, the troopers that were standing over there
381
00:21:11.640 --> 00:21:11.880
with me.
382
00:21:12.519 --> 00:21:14.799
He came with us, yeah, you know, and yeah, it
383
00:21:14.880 --> 00:21:16.880
was just me and my rifle and uh, but you know,
384
00:21:16.920 --> 00:21:19.000
it's nice to have you and your rifle. And and
385
00:21:19.000 --> 00:21:21.400
and trooper did I don't even know if he had
386
00:21:21.400 --> 00:21:24.440
a rifle. I think he had a pistol. Uh. But
387
00:21:24.440 --> 00:21:26.839
but that's one of those situations, folks. And and uh,
388
00:21:27.079 --> 00:21:30.200
you know, I'm not going to go too far into that,
389
00:21:30.279 --> 00:21:32.640
but we were very proud of the students one and
390
00:21:32.680 --> 00:21:36.160
their reactions because they were ready to go as well.
391
00:21:36.960 --> 00:21:41.440
And uh, you know, so the students of staff, everybody
392
00:21:41.440 --> 00:21:44.079
were taking it seriously. The emotions that we saw when
393
00:21:44.119 --> 00:21:47.599
we came through those doors and kicked those doors through, uh,
394
00:21:47.720 --> 00:21:51.240
because we were moving doors folks by fours, uh and
395
00:21:51.279 --> 00:21:55.480
moving through that building. And and one of the things
396
00:21:55.519 --> 00:21:59.880
I do recall, Joe, that you know, really kind of
397
00:22:00.119 --> 00:22:04.200
taxed my feelings a little bit, were that some of
398
00:22:04.200 --> 00:22:09.079
those sometimes the most I don't know, maybe the things
399
00:22:09.079 --> 00:22:11.599
that you take for granted, which is going to the
400
00:22:11.599 --> 00:22:14.640
restroom when you need to go, those students were stuck
401
00:22:15.279 --> 00:22:19.559
in lockdown. And I exited the build, our building, I
402
00:22:19.599 --> 00:22:22.799
exited the building, We cleared and I was actually walking
403
00:22:22.920 --> 00:22:26.559
back to the vehicle to secure my rifle, and here,
404
00:22:26.599 --> 00:22:28.640
all of a sudden, a couple of windows open, and
405
00:22:28.680 --> 00:22:30.720
the teachers like, hey, I've got some students in here
406
00:22:30.720 --> 00:22:32.839
that really need to go to the restroom, you know.
407
00:22:33.240 --> 00:22:35.240
And that's when we went back and we're able to
408
00:22:35.400 --> 00:22:37.000
you know, get them out of lockdown, to get them
409
00:22:37.039 --> 00:22:40.680
into the restrooms. But just something as small as that.
410
00:22:41.160 --> 00:22:43.480
Yeah, you forget about things like that.
411
00:22:43.599 --> 00:22:47.240
Yeah, yeah, our mind is on a possible shooter. The
412
00:22:47.319 --> 00:22:49.519
last thing on our mind was, hey, yeah, these kids
413
00:22:49.599 --> 00:22:52.519
need to go to the restroom, right, you know. So yeah,
414
00:22:52.559 --> 00:22:54.519
it was. It was one of those things. But one
415
00:22:54.599 --> 00:22:57.839
thing I can say, uh, is that every single law
416
00:22:57.920 --> 00:23:01.799
enforcement officer from all three agencies were responded went directly
417
00:23:01.839 --> 00:23:04.640
into those buildings. Okay, it was not a Uvaldi again,
418
00:23:04.839 --> 00:23:06.640
Euvaldi did not exist in Bedford.
419
00:23:07.039 --> 00:23:09.720
Okay, So well that was I'll I think you know
420
00:23:09.799 --> 00:23:11.359
the story. I'm not going to tell it on here,
421
00:23:11.720 --> 00:23:13.160
but I'll tell you after we get done.
422
00:23:13.400 --> 00:23:15.559
Yeah, and and you know, I appreciate what you said, Joe,
423
00:23:15.519 --> 00:23:18.559
because yeah, my mindset that day was like you know,
424
00:23:18.640 --> 00:23:20.880
I am I am going to go in by myself
425
00:23:21.759 --> 00:23:24.680
and so it was nice because my thought wasn't even hey,
426
00:23:24.799 --> 00:23:26.720
let me pull Joe, because you were kind of like
427
00:23:26.720 --> 00:23:29.319
on a the corner. Yeah, you had a corner security.
428
00:23:29.839 --> 00:23:33.000
I had a quad section because I was covering the
429
00:23:33.079 --> 00:23:38.000
intersection of two sidewalks at the at that intersection, and
430
00:23:38.079 --> 00:23:41.160
I had one, two, three, I had four buildings and
431
00:23:41.200 --> 00:23:43.680
a courtyard that I was covering. Yeah, all from one spot.
432
00:23:43.960 --> 00:23:46.079
Yeah, so it was it was nice. I didn't want
433
00:23:46.079 --> 00:23:47.680
to pull you from that, but you know, we had
434
00:23:47.759 --> 00:23:51.279
so many overlapping dominating fields and a view and everything
435
00:23:51.440 --> 00:23:52.920
right right in.
436
00:23:53.039 --> 00:23:55.240
Yeah. I rotated the officer from the far side of
437
00:23:55.240 --> 00:23:58.400
the campus to my spot. Yeah, take my spot. Worked
438
00:23:58.440 --> 00:24:00.920
well cover and then I rotated him back out when
439
00:24:00.920 --> 00:24:02.880
I came and cleared with you. Yeah.
440
00:24:03.039 --> 00:24:05.559
And I appreciate you you actually reaching out that day, Joe,
441
00:24:05.559 --> 00:24:08.039
because you saw my mindset. My mindset, it's one way
442
00:24:08.119 --> 00:24:12.119
and my brain is totally focused on that threat. And
443
00:24:12.160 --> 00:24:14.319
so you actually had a verbalize to me because I
444
00:24:14.359 --> 00:24:16.240
kind of just glanced over said okay, Joe's there and
445
00:24:17.240 --> 00:24:19.599
didn't even think about, hey, Joe, you want to join me,
446
00:24:19.759 --> 00:24:22.039
you know. So that was cool. So I appreciate that.
447
00:24:23.279 --> 00:24:29.039
I see David Seanfeld, a developmental behavior repeatia atrician at
448
00:24:29.079 --> 00:24:32.160
the Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the director of the
449
00:24:32.279 --> 00:24:36.359
National Center for a School Crisis and Bereavement, said he's
450
00:24:36.359 --> 00:24:39.319
seen similar fears arise when active shooter drills in high
451
00:24:39.359 --> 00:24:43.920
schools are excessive and hyper realistic. Quote, it just gives
452
00:24:43.920 --> 00:24:48.480
me them, sorry, it just gives me them the impression
453
00:24:48.759 --> 00:24:52.319
that there is an inevitable, inevitability of being in a
454
00:24:52.400 --> 00:24:56.200
violent situation, to the point where schools and college campuses
455
00:24:57.039 --> 00:24:59.759
don't want places or perceive safety.
456
00:25:00.640 --> 00:25:06.400
Tractors supply, what are they a parking lot of Tractorsply,
457
00:25:06.480 --> 00:25:07.960
I'm not exactly sure what they had though.
458
00:25:07.839 --> 00:25:10.400
But instead of becoming places where they have to worry
459
00:25:10.400 --> 00:25:13.480
about somebody coming to hurt you or harm you, he said,
460
00:25:13.880 --> 00:25:19.440
the stress can affect academic performance. There's an opportunity costs
461
00:25:19.720 --> 00:25:22.799
when we divert some of our energy towards being vigilant.
462
00:25:23.279 --> 00:25:26.279
If students don't feel as safe, they may not or
463
00:25:26.319 --> 00:25:29.839
they may be less open to meeting new people, less
464
00:25:29.960 --> 00:25:33.240
likely to engage in new thoughts and ideas as well
465
00:25:33.240 --> 00:25:33.960
as in learning.
466
00:25:34.319 --> 00:25:36.920
Yeah, the trauma stilled by a swatting hoax isn't just
467
00:25:37.000 --> 00:25:40.240
born by students, experts say it also hurts their families
468
00:25:40.319 --> 00:25:43.400
and ripples out of their communities. So you have all
469
00:25:43.440 --> 00:25:46.640
the kids who are texting their parents, shild Kraut said,
470
00:25:47.079 --> 00:25:49.160
and you have the parents who think they're not going
471
00:25:49.200 --> 00:25:52.440
to see their kids later. And that's incredible, incredibly traumatizing,
472
00:25:53.119 --> 00:25:55.640
And you don't know what kind of trauma of the
473
00:25:55.640 --> 00:25:58.920
community experience before that moment, of course. So she'ld trap
474
00:25:59.160 --> 00:26:02.759
also remembered being in Uvalde, Texas, a few weeks after
475
00:26:02.799 --> 00:26:05.640
a shooter killed nineteen students and two teachers at rob
476
00:26:05.640 --> 00:26:09.279
Elementary School in twenty twenty two, and literally every time
477
00:26:09.319 --> 00:26:12.400
a siren went off in that community, everybody froze and
478
00:26:12.440 --> 00:26:15.400
they almost looked like they were about to hit the deck.
479
00:26:16.000 --> 00:26:19.400
So even just general community members who are seeing these,
480
00:26:19.839 --> 00:26:22.880
you know, repeated lights and sirens, who are hearing these
481
00:26:22.880 --> 00:26:26.720
sort of rumors spreading about, you know, that still impacts
482
00:26:26.759 --> 00:26:30.880
them because these are community wide tragedies. So Schildkraut said
483
00:26:30.880 --> 00:26:33.519
that more could be done at the federal level to
484
00:26:33.599 --> 00:26:38.000
prevent mass shootings and suggested that this inaction has created
485
00:26:38.039 --> 00:26:41.799
an atmosphere of acceptance and that has now signaled to
486
00:26:41.880 --> 00:26:44.440
people that we can, you know, also threaten a mass
487
00:26:44.440 --> 00:26:48.119
shooting and will somehow be okay, you know, like it's
488
00:26:48.200 --> 00:26:51.440
okay to disrupt learning and it's okay to cause trouble
489
00:26:51.799 --> 00:26:55.640
and it's incredibly you know, incredibly harmful, she said. So
490
00:26:55.720 --> 00:27:00.359
we can't underscore enough that this is not a joke, Joe,
491
00:27:00.400 --> 00:27:02.880
I guess this is about the time where we need
492
00:27:02.920 --> 00:27:04.720
to go ahead and pay tribute to a falling officer
493
00:27:04.759 --> 00:27:05.359
of Canine.
494
00:27:06.000 --> 00:27:09.039
Yes, Sir, this week, we would like to pay tribute
495
00:27:09.079 --> 00:27:15.000
to Sergeant Lee Sorenson from the Thurmington Garland Police Department
496
00:27:15.039 --> 00:27:18.519
in Utah. End of watch was August the seventeenth, twenty
497
00:27:18.559 --> 00:27:24.240
twenty five. Sergeant Lee Sorensen and police officer Eric Estrata
498
00:27:24.759 --> 00:27:27.319
were shot and killed while responding to multiple nine to
499
00:27:27.319 --> 00:27:29.440
one one hang up calls at a residence near seven
500
00:27:29.519 --> 00:27:33.400
hundred North and two hundred East in trent Monton. I
501
00:27:33.440 --> 00:27:37.000
think I'm saying that right after nine pm, one of
502
00:27:37.000 --> 00:27:39.359
the officers was taken to a residence in the home
503
00:27:39.559 --> 00:27:43.759
about a domestic dispute. A man exited the house with
504
00:27:43.799 --> 00:27:47.000
a gun, open fire and mortally wounded the officer. Another
505
00:27:47.039 --> 00:27:50.559
officer arrived his back up and was also shot and killed.
506
00:27:50.920 --> 00:27:54.119
A deputy and a Canon from the Box Elder County
507
00:27:54.119 --> 00:27:58.640
Sheriff's Office was hospitalized with non life threatening injuries after
508
00:27:58.680 --> 00:28:03.359
being shot while in his troll vehicle. An additional officer
509
00:28:03.440 --> 00:28:06.799
arrived by standers convinced the man to surrender. He was
510
00:28:06.920 --> 00:28:10.640
arrested in charge with aggravated murder. Sergeant Swordsen had served
511
00:28:10.640 --> 00:28:15.000
with the Trentmond and Garland Police Department for sixteen years,
512
00:28:15.000 --> 00:28:17.000
and he survived by his wife and three children.
513
00:28:18.039 --> 00:28:20.960
Well, we definitely pay tribute. I think it's tremonton.
514
00:28:21.200 --> 00:28:21.599
Yeah.
515
00:28:21.680 --> 00:28:23.400
And the only reason I say that is because I
516
00:28:23.440 --> 00:28:25.279
talked about that while you were gone for the last
517
00:28:25.319 --> 00:28:27.720
couple of weeks. I didn't talk. I didn't pay tribute.
518
00:28:27.720 --> 00:28:29.799
I believe what I did was I talked about the
519
00:28:29.880 --> 00:28:30.720
ambush incident.
520
00:28:32.119 --> 00:28:34.359
Sorry, so mispronunciation.
521
00:28:34.640 --> 00:28:37.039
We definitely pay tribute to those officers, as well as
522
00:28:37.079 --> 00:28:38.920
all the officers and canons who have fallen in the
523
00:28:38.960 --> 00:28:41.960
line of duty. And Joe, that about wraps it up
524
00:28:42.000 --> 00:28:45.039
for this week, and we are going to be by
525
00:28:45.079 --> 00:28:47.720
ourselves here shortly because I think you have one getting
526
00:28:47.759 --> 00:28:52.160
off if they haven't already gotten off, so we'll be monitoring.
527
00:28:52.240 --> 00:28:55.480
But folks, we appreciate you, and we always want you
528
00:28:55.519 --> 00:28:58.880
to remember where your friends were, your neighbors. But most
529
00:28:58.960 --> 00:29:01.960
of all, we are your police department, and we thank
530
00:29:02.000 --> 00:29:04.519
you for your support. I'm Captain Robert Kimbrol, and I'm
531
00:29:04.559 --> 00:29:06.759
sorry there doing thank you.
