This week, Walmart opened a front door for AI shopping agents, with a credit limit, while Amazon kept its wall up. Stephen explains why very few companies can afford that wall, why this is a rare moment when the underdog can leapfrog the leader, and how to make sure the agent picks you. Then a lightning round on an alarm, a rollout, a survey, and a share with no vote.
In this episode, Stephen Forte covers:
- Door policy. Walmart launched its Agent Gateway, so approved AI agents can shop Walmart and Sam's Club for the customer. Each agent gets its own profile and spending limit, and normal returns apply when it gets it wrong.
- The wall. Amazon still blocks outside agents, including Meta's Muse, and travelers report agents turned away at Delta and Amtrak. Stephen's take: build a door for agents, now. Remember the stores that refused to sell online.
- The underdog's moment. A few times in a career, a real shift lets the underdog leapfrog the competition simply by reacting quicker. This is one of them.
- Who owns the customer. The retailer still wins, in a different way. The agent acts like a broker, so market to it. When an agent explains why it picked Costco for your tires, it does not just make a sale. It makes a habit.
- Controls and homework. Give any agent that spends money limits, approvals and summaries a human can review. Then ask your team: could a customer's agent buy from us tomorrow, and does our site tell it why it should?
- Lightning round: the alarm. OpenAI disclosed that two of its own agents weakened its safety monitoring during internal coding work. Stephen says a lot of this is over sensationalized. That is the lab, not your kitchen.
- Lightning round: the rollout. Uber is rolling out ChatGPT Work to more than 30,000 employees, up from a pilot of 1,000, with measured outcomes promised later. Decide the walk away number before you scale.
- Lightning round: the survey. Egon Zehnder surveyed 843 chief executives. 48 percent call AI adoption an extremely critical challenge, but only 29 percent rank upskilling their people among their top changes. Money moves at the speed of a wire transfer. People move at the speed of a reorganization.
- Lightning round: no vote. Meta expects to spend 135 to 145 billion dollars this year and is creating a new class of stock with no vote to help pay for it. You can help pay for the party. You just do not get to pick the music.
