00:00:00.320 --> 00:00:06.639
Lights off, flashlight on, then it's time for the creepover.
00:00:44.399 --> 00:00:50.000
My name is Allie, and my name is Catherine, and we're your ghastly hosts.
00:00:50.159 --> 00:00:57.359
So pull up a sleeping bag, your favorite treats, and get ready to scream like a girl.
00:00:57.759 --> 00:00:59.200
Hey, Catherine.
00:00:59.520 --> 00:01:00.719
Hi, Allie.
00:01:01.520 --> 00:01:04.879
Well, we've officially been a week into fall.
00:01:05.280 --> 00:01:08.159
Put out four conjuring episodes.
00:01:08.319 --> 00:01:12.959
Thank you all again for joining us for our conjuring extravaganza.
00:01:13.439 --> 00:01:18.959
Yes, we had a lot of fun revisiting mommy and daddy and Lorraine Warren.
00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:22.719
And that will be the last you hear of that phrase.
00:01:22.959 --> 00:01:23.760
Yeah, don't worry.
00:01:23.840 --> 00:01:24.799
It's over now.
00:01:25.840 --> 00:01:33.040
It also here in Austin is one of the many, many uh seasonal allergy seasons that I'm afflicted with.
00:01:33.439 --> 00:01:36.959
So I apologize in advance for my horse throat.
00:01:38.000 --> 00:01:38.719
You sound great.
00:01:38.879 --> 00:01:42.000
Giving a little husk to this week's episode.
00:01:42.319 --> 00:01:45.120
So Ali, what what are we gonna be talking about this week?
00:01:45.359 --> 00:01:49.599
This week, our haunted VHS is Widows Bay.
00:01:50.079 --> 00:01:51.519
I'm so excited.
00:01:51.840 --> 00:01:55.599
Minute one, when I started watching this for the first time, I was like a minute.
00:01:56.159 --> 00:01:57.439
This is this is my show.
00:01:57.599 --> 00:01:59.680
And it didn't let us down for 10 episodes in a row.
00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:00.719
No, it didn't.
00:02:00.959 --> 00:02:12.560
So for those of you joining along, we're gonna be discussing episodes one and two today, and subsequently two episodes per episode of the podcast.
00:02:12.800 --> 00:02:14.400
And we can't wait to get into it.
00:02:14.479 --> 00:02:19.280
But before we do, Allie, I think it's time for creeped out Creeped Out.
00:02:19.599 --> 00:02:23.599
Where we talk about one thing from the past week that uh creeped us out.
00:02:23.919 --> 00:02:26.560
Well, I did it again, everybody.
00:02:26.719 --> 00:02:29.439
I scared Catherine this week.
00:02:30.240 --> 00:02:34.319
Yeah, we have a small creeped out instance and then a larger one.
00:02:34.400 --> 00:02:40.960
And the first is that Allie and I were getting into the car to go, I don't know, some sort of weekend plans.
00:02:41.280 --> 00:02:46.400
And what did you say to me the moment I shut myself into the car, Allie?
00:02:46.719 --> 00:02:54.639
I said, so there's a mouse in the car, and the moment it was coming out of my mouth, Catherine's feet were already up.
00:02:55.039 --> 00:02:56.400
She was like, What?
00:02:56.639 --> 00:02:57.280
What?
00:02:58.479 --> 00:03:00.240
You will have to understand.
00:03:00.639 --> 00:03:04.319
Allie is calm and collected under pressure.
00:03:04.719 --> 00:03:07.120
Like 99% of the time.
00:03:07.280 --> 00:03:08.400
We talk about it too.
00:03:08.639 --> 00:03:14.560
Any other time, I'm just anxious and not good and just like chaos.
00:03:15.199 --> 00:03:21.120
But when it's when it's actually bad, when there's an actual crisis, actually cool, calm, and collected for sure.
00:03:21.280 --> 00:03:25.120
I think about Lars Bonchair's melancholy all the time when it comes to this.
00:03:25.280 --> 00:03:36.319
How Kristen Dunst's depressed character is completely fine with the end of the world and has the best head on her shoulders when the world is literally being consumed by what is that, like another planet or something.
00:03:36.639 --> 00:03:38.560
Yeah, like a meteor or something.
00:03:38.639 --> 00:03:38.879
Yeah.
00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:42.719
Yeah, this is what chronic depression does to you.
00:03:42.879 --> 00:03:43.199
Yes.
00:03:43.439 --> 00:03:53.680
But the point of me bringing this up is that there have been multiple occasions in the past where there's been perhaps a large bug in my hair or upon my person.
00:03:53.919 --> 00:03:58.639
And Allie will state the fact, usually she states it after she has, in fact, intervened.
00:03:58.960 --> 00:04:00.000
So I'm none the wiser.
00:04:00.479 --> 00:04:00.879
Come here.
00:04:00.960 --> 00:04:02.080
Let me get something.
00:04:02.400 --> 00:04:07.199
So you have to understand that Ali was stating this in that same calm voice.
00:04:07.360 --> 00:04:13.120
So my instinct was there is a mouse in the car, and Allie is just trying not to freak me out.
00:04:13.439 --> 00:04:21.199
Which it really, as the last word came out of my mouth, I realized I've made a huge mistake.
00:04:21.360 --> 00:04:33.439
And even as I was screaming and yanking my feet up onto the passenger seat, I was thinking, I don't know why we would get in the car and I would shut myself in, and then Allie would warn me that there's a mouse in the car.
00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:39.199
But as you might have guessed, it was in fact a computer mouse to which she was referring.
00:04:39.439 --> 00:04:42.800
I dropped my computer mouse in the car.
00:04:43.040 --> 00:04:44.560
I still have not found it.
00:04:44.720 --> 00:04:50.000
So I was just kind of going, like, if you see the mouse, like let me know.
00:04:50.639 --> 00:04:54.240
Um, which after I saw Catherine's face, I was like, I had I'm so sorry.
00:04:54.319 --> 00:04:54.879
I'm so sorry.
00:04:55.040 --> 00:04:56.319
Computer mouse, a computer mouse.
00:04:56.399 --> 00:05:00.000
And you were like, why would you say it like that?
00:05:00.240 --> 00:05:07.600
It's something similar to you scaring me when I was on my bed, where I thought, well, okay, I have good reflexes at least.
00:05:07.759 --> 00:05:08.160
I do.
00:05:08.639 --> 00:05:13.439
But maybe they need to be a little less delicately wired.
00:05:13.680 --> 00:05:14.319
Yeah, yeah.
00:05:14.560 --> 00:05:15.600
I'm so sorry.
00:05:15.839 --> 00:05:18.959
It was like me getting out the word mouse.
00:05:19.120 --> 00:05:22.319
Like by the time the S happened, her feet were all the way up.
00:05:22.639 --> 00:05:23.439
I said no.
00:05:23.680 --> 00:05:24.319
So I'm so excited.
00:05:24.480 --> 00:05:31.120
I was about to open the door and just roll myself out of the car in general, but we clarified the misconception.
00:05:31.360 --> 00:05:31.680
Yep.
00:05:31.920 --> 00:05:33.439
That was not what I meant.
00:05:33.839 --> 00:05:36.959
The other creepy thing we did this week was very intentional.
00:05:37.199 --> 00:05:48.399
We went to Goodwill and gave ourselves a challenge where we gave each other 10 minutes to scour the shop separately and come back with the creepiest item we could find.
00:05:48.639 --> 00:05:53.920
Yeah, and I think it wasn't a goodwill that had a ton of creepy items, but I feel like we did a good job.
00:05:54.079 --> 00:05:56.800
I think we still did well for the small selection.
00:05:57.040 --> 00:05:58.800
Yeah, you want to talk about what you got?
00:05:59.040 --> 00:06:00.959
I found a uh creepy sign.
00:06:01.120 --> 00:06:02.240
What about you, Allie?
00:06:02.480 --> 00:06:03.680
I found a creepy doll.
00:06:04.079 --> 00:06:14.079
And if you would like to see video footage of our discoveries, you can you can find those over on the Instagram or TikTok at the Creepover Podcast.
00:06:14.319 --> 00:06:16.079
And we'll leave you with that little teaser.
00:06:16.160 --> 00:06:16.720
Yes.
00:06:17.040 --> 00:06:22.480
But suffice to say, I I laid eyes on some quite creepy objects and the goodwill.
00:06:22.560 --> 00:06:27.839
We had an awkward social interaction with a woman who was very territorial about the checkout line space.
00:06:28.079 --> 00:06:29.519
Oh, yeah, that creeped me out.
00:06:29.600 --> 00:06:31.600
I was about to say anything that was creepier than anything.
00:06:31.759 --> 00:06:38.240
This woman, first of all, I think she was one of those bulk buyers who just buys a ton of stuff and then upsells it on eBay or Etsy.
00:06:38.319 --> 00:06:38.639
I don't know.
00:06:38.720 --> 00:06:40.959
I don't know what this woman's operation was.
00:06:41.279 --> 00:06:46.480
Allie and I were standing at least three yards away from this woman, if not more.
00:06:47.279 --> 00:06:50.959
Like COVID rules, we would have been totally completely fine.
00:06:51.120 --> 00:06:53.600
Like it was well over six feet.
00:06:53.839 --> 00:06:55.839
And she's just in the middle of unloading stuff.
00:06:56.000 --> 00:07:04.319
First of all, I was overhearing her conversation with the cashier who was talking about his friend who does dubstep.
00:07:04.399 --> 00:07:06.240
And she said, I don't know what that is.
00:07:06.319 --> 00:07:07.519
What's dubstep?
00:07:09.120 --> 00:07:11.839
And this woman is like was probably 20 years older than us.
00:07:11.920 --> 00:07:15.279
And I was like, But I think you you've definitely lived through the dubstep era.
00:07:15.920 --> 00:07:16.000
Yeah.
00:07:16.319 --> 00:07:16.639
Okay.
00:07:17.279 --> 00:07:22.800
I it was it was a very interesting vibe that she and her husband were giving off.
00:07:22.959 --> 00:07:28.240
And you know, uh she said, Oh, the line's back there.
00:07:28.639 --> 00:07:36.000
She was unloading her things and then suddenly made eye contact with us and gave a really ugly look and said, uh, the line's back there.
00:07:36.240 --> 00:07:39.680
Yeah, you all need to stand back there where the line is.
00:07:39.839 --> 00:07:41.279
Where the sign says to say.
00:07:41.360 --> 00:07:42.000
And there's no sign.
00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:42.879
No sign.
00:07:43.120 --> 00:07:44.720
And we're just standing in line.
00:07:44.879 --> 00:07:48.399
And then and I looked behind us, there's people like directly behind us too.
00:07:48.480 --> 00:07:54.879
And I was like, I it's one of those you had that moment you're like, oh, this person isn't completely connected with reality perhaps.
00:07:55.120 --> 00:07:55.920
Oh, no.
00:07:56.399 --> 00:08:00.560
And also I'm like, Do you think we're gonna like go for your bulk items of goodwill?
00:08:00.720 --> 00:08:01.839
Can you easy?
00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:10.399
I don't know what was going through this woman's head, but it was a very strange interaction, and Allie and I were just like and stayed where we were.
00:08:10.560 --> 00:08:11.839
Yeah, yeah, we did not move.
00:08:11.920 --> 00:08:14.160
Catherine was like, Oh, we are in line.
00:08:14.399 --> 00:08:15.439
Like, we're in line.
00:08:15.519 --> 00:08:20.319
This this is so fucking confused.
00:08:20.639 --> 00:08:22.639
And like I said, there were people directly behind us too.
00:08:22.720 --> 00:08:24.879
Like we couldn't have backed up if we wanted to.
00:08:25.199 --> 00:08:26.800
We both just like looked around.
00:08:26.879 --> 00:08:27.759
We were like, oh.
00:08:34.399 --> 00:08:35.759
I was just so confused.
00:08:36.159 --> 00:08:38.639
I don't I don't want anything in your stack of clothes.
00:08:38.960 --> 00:08:39.360
Damn.
00:08:39.759 --> 00:08:40.000
Yeah.
00:08:40.240 --> 00:08:42.559
We both just like left and we're like, huh.
00:08:44.080 --> 00:08:50.559
I'm not sure she would have been happy if people were not, in fact, like a full mile radius away from her while she was unpacking her clothes.
00:08:50.799 --> 00:08:50.960
Yeah.
00:08:51.120 --> 00:08:58.879
When I tell you it had to be over a grand if she was spending on clothes, like the amount of items.
00:08:59.279 --> 00:09:06.240
And I I just really like I thought when she turned around, because it was taking forever, I thought she was gonna apologize.
00:09:06.639 --> 00:09:08.879
Because she we waited maybe for like 10 minutes.
00:09:09.039 --> 00:09:14.559
And of course, I was like, oh, she was gonna be apologized and be like, oh my gosh, I'm so sorry you had to be behind me because there's only one cashier working.
00:09:14.799 --> 00:09:14.960
No.
00:09:15.120 --> 00:09:17.279
No, the line is back there.
00:09:19.840 --> 00:09:23.759
I wish we could perfectly describe the visual, like the actual comedy.
00:09:24.480 --> 00:09:24.639
Yes.
00:09:25.360 --> 00:09:26.000
I was like, oh.
00:09:26.720 --> 00:09:28.399
So that was our social creep down.
00:09:28.720 --> 00:09:37.919
Our reminder that people are strange and uh stranger even than frightening ceramics and porcelain dolls and weird bathroom signs that you find at a Goodwill.
00:09:38.159 --> 00:09:38.799
Yes.
00:09:39.519 --> 00:09:42.559
Oh, well, let's move on to the main event.
00:09:42.879 --> 00:09:48.080
We're gonna talk about this week's haunted beach us, Widows Bay.
00:09:48.320 --> 00:09:59.200
And honestly, Allie, I this was one of my personal motivations for bringing back the podcast, and I think something that sparked our discussion to come back because it's just that good.
00:09:59.440 --> 00:10:00.399
Yeah, it really is.
00:10:00.480 --> 00:10:07.519
And I wanted to start us off on like really doing some movies, the most classic of classic horror movies in recent years.
00:10:07.759 --> 00:10:12.240
But now we're going to introduce a TV series.
00:10:12.399 --> 00:10:20.240
As we mentioned at the beginning of the reboot, we'll be doing scary movies, we'll be doing scary TV shows, and some truth crime documentaries.
00:10:20.480 --> 00:10:24.960
So you'll get a little taste of all three of those as we come back into spooky season.
00:10:25.200 --> 00:10:25.759
Yes.
00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:29.759
I'm just also thrilled that Widows Bay got its flowers recently at the Emmys.
00:10:30.240 --> 00:10:39.360
You don't get me started on a tire right about award shows because I think that by and large they're absolutely pointless and ridiculous and biased and yada yada yada.
00:10:39.440 --> 00:10:45.440
But then I am always happy to see a show I love get some recognition because it is the imperfect system that they're working in.
00:10:45.600 --> 00:10:47.360
And they got 14 Emmy ones.
00:10:47.759 --> 00:10:55.759
Yeah, I really do feel the same way where it's like I hate on award shows until they give me something that I actually want, and then I'm like, yes.
00:10:56.480 --> 00:10:57.440
Like they want it.
00:10:57.519 --> 00:11:00.799
And it's like, uh, but anything else, I'm I'm kind of mad at them.
00:11:01.039 --> 00:11:24.799
Well, I just always think about Paul Dano's speech in Little Miss Sunshine, which is one of my favorite movies, where he just goes off about life being so many beauty contests and that they're all bullshit and that you should just live your life and make art and fuck what everybody else thinks and how they determine your worth, and that is generally the philosophy I bring in with me whenever Academy Award or MEC rolls around.
00:11:25.039 --> 00:11:27.120
Or when we record a podcast.
00:11:28.399 --> 00:11:31.039
Yes, Ali, our podcast in the running for.
00:11:31.600 --> 00:11:35.120
I just mean you gotta just be like, uh, I don't care if I'm being judged.
00:11:35.360 --> 00:11:39.200
Yeah, yeah, I I think that is generally the best philosophy.
00:11:39.600 --> 00:11:46.159
And I think that art, like so many things, there's there's bad art for sure, but I think a lot of it's subjective.
00:11:46.320 --> 00:11:50.559
But then I then I am always happy when something I really love gets recognition.
00:11:50.720 --> 00:11:57.679
And especially when it comes to Widow's Bay, because I adore dark comedy and the horror comedy genre.
00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:08.080
And I think that there's such a lack of it in general, and I really hope that this leads to many more horror comedy shows in the future.
00:12:08.399 --> 00:12:10.159
Yeah, I never want this show to end.
00:12:10.399 --> 00:12:10.799
Yeah.
00:12:11.120 --> 00:12:20.080
I do feel like it will have a pretty like clear arc, and they're probably gonna end it like they're not, it's not a show that's gonna go on forever and ever, but I like kind of hope it does, you know?
00:12:20.320 --> 00:12:22.799
Yeah, I get the impression that Katie Dippled.
00:12:23.039 --> 00:12:33.840
I I think anyone who has been watching Widows Bay or whose algorithm is heading the way ours is knows a little bit about the backstory about how she wrote for Parks and Rec.
00:12:34.080 --> 00:12:46.799
And I think that this was originally an idea for a one-off episode for Parks and Wreck, and we'll get into it more when we talk about the plot, but you can definitely see little fingerprints definitely in the show itself.
00:12:47.120 --> 00:13:00.480
But yeah, I think you can definitely tell that uh Katie Dippald was like trained in comedy and that she's a very excellent, I think, uh showrunner and screenwriter because it's a very well written.
00:13:00.799 --> 00:13:08.879
I always dork out about just really, really well written, like not only full series arcs, but every single episode arc is so tightly crafted.
00:13:08.960 --> 00:13:11.519
And I really appreciate that about the show.
00:13:11.840 --> 00:13:22.240
And Ali knows I was ranting about this ridiculous op-ed by Jay Martell, who I really respect as like a show owner for Key and Peel.
00:13:22.559 --> 00:13:50.080
But he wrote this op-ed during Emmy season about how comedy was being essentially polluted by he was just seemed to be a comedy purist about how it was ridiculous that all these other shows were in the running for best comedy because they weren't true comedies and they weren't pure comedies, and essentially insinuated that there's nothing funny about death or the macabre and how ridiculous that something like Widows Bay would be considered a comedy.
00:13:50.480 --> 00:13:56.240
In the same breath, in the same breath, he mentions that a good example of a comedy is MASH.
00:13:56.639 --> 00:13:56.960
MASH.
00:13:57.440 --> 00:14:02.960
No, notoriously a very it wasn't necessarily a dark comedy, it was a sitcom.
00:14:03.120 --> 00:14:09.919
And this is the thing that I think was his problem is that he just wants there to be purely a sitcom category, and I'm all for that.
00:14:10.000 --> 00:14:24.320
That that's the thing where I'm like, well, that's the Emmy's fault for not having enough categories for their competitors, but that's not the fault of excellent comedies that aren't sitcoms or that aren't just pure comedy in his very narrow definition of the word.
00:14:24.399 --> 00:14:39.440
But yeah, MASH, notoriously a critique of the Vietnam War that ended as one of the most dark, serious finales that I've ever witnessed in my life that comes down to your main character essentially being responsible for the death of a child.
00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:44.000
Tell me why that qualifies as pure comedy, Jay.
00:14:44.080 --> 00:14:45.679
I I would love to know.
00:14:45.840 --> 00:14:52.000
But and also there's nothing horror genre related in these Emmy shows.
00:14:52.159 --> 00:14:56.799
So I don't understand where you would place this besides comedy.
00:14:56.960 --> 00:14:57.120
Right.
00:14:57.279 --> 00:14:59.759
Because it is hil- the show is hilarious.
00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:00.320
Right.
00:15:00.559 --> 00:15:07.919
I think that his problem should have been, and he brings it up, but the fact that he was throwing other shows under the bus, I thought was in poor taste.
00:15:08.000 --> 00:15:18.720
And it's it's really embarrassing because it's just clearly a case of sour grapes, where he mentions that he recently pitched a show that got denied by a streaming platform because they said it wasn't propulsive enough.
00:15:18.879 --> 00:15:33.440
His whole argument was so convoluted, it was like partially like upset that these weren't pure comedy, and then partially upset that nowadays like there's a lack of true comedy because people are asking for shows to be quote unquote propulsive.
00:15:33.840 --> 00:15:40.080
He's trying to say that like comedy means that the main characters never change.
00:15:40.240 --> 00:15:44.159
They keep making the same mistakes over and over and over and over again.
00:15:44.399 --> 00:15:47.039
And I think that is generally true of sitcoms.
00:15:47.360 --> 00:15:59.440
I also would argue that that's somewhat true of Widows Bay, like these are very flawed characters who continue to indulge in the same foibles again and again.
00:15:59.600 --> 00:16:02.399
A la a Parks and Rec or The Office.
00:16:02.480 --> 00:16:05.519
Like part of the fun is the ridiculosity of these characters.
00:16:05.679 --> 00:16:10.320
But he was seeming to imply that good comedy means that there's no character growth.
00:16:10.480 --> 00:16:19.120
And that's the problem with the industry now is that people are just looking for shows that have character growth and propulsive storylines that compel you to watch the next episode.
00:16:19.200 --> 00:16:22.720
I don't want to be like, any good show is gonna compel you to watch the next episode.
00:16:22.799 --> 00:16:35.519
Do you know in my most depressive episodes how many episodes of The Office or Parks and Rack or Seinfeld I have binged because it is very bingeable propulsive comedy?
00:16:35.679 --> 00:16:36.080
Yeah.
00:16:36.399 --> 00:16:40.879
Anyway, sorry, I really went on all real, but no, I I feel the same.
00:16:40.960 --> 00:16:42.240
Obviously, I feel the same way.
00:16:42.480 --> 00:17:05.599
I think it just made me upset because it felt like punching sideways and down instead of just making the argument about the fact that award shows like this are stupid and they are antiquated, and that insisting that essentially if it's 30 minutes, it's a comedy and an hour it's a drama is a really outdated way of looking at shows, period.
00:17:05.920 --> 00:17:13.920
But then to point the finger at fellow shows because you were bitter that yours didn't get picked up and say they're taking up space.
00:17:14.079 --> 00:17:14.799
How dare they?
00:17:14.880 --> 00:17:18.000
They're not true comedies, is not a good book.
00:17:18.160 --> 00:17:18.480
Yeah.
00:17:18.720 --> 00:17:21.440
It really does feel like he was telling on himself the whole time.
00:17:21.680 --> 00:17:22.000
Yeah.
00:17:22.400 --> 00:17:30.079
When he when he brought up the fact that I had a show that didn't get picked up, we're like, oh, oh, oh, he said the quiet part about that.
00:17:30.319 --> 00:17:30.960
Okay, yeah, yeah.
00:17:31.039 --> 00:17:32.960
If he would have buried that, maybe.
00:17:33.200 --> 00:17:34.720
I mean, I still would have not agree.
00:17:34.960 --> 00:18:03.440
The reason I bring this up is to simply say that I don't think that horror comedies really have a space carved out for them in TV series land, and that's why I was so thrilled that Widow's Bay A was just made, and B, that it got recognition for being what it is, which is a simultaneously scary and hilarious show that is wonderfully acted and directed and written.
00:18:03.759 --> 00:18:04.319
I agree.
00:18:04.480 --> 00:18:06.240
I think it's some of the best acting I've seen.
00:18:06.319 --> 00:18:13.200
I mean, Matthew Reese, we've always me and you have loved him, but you've really loved him from the beginning because you watched The Americans.
00:18:13.279 --> 00:18:15.920
And when I watched The Americans, I was like, oh my god, I get it.
00:18:16.000 --> 00:18:18.720
But you watched The Americans like a long time ago.
00:18:19.599 --> 00:18:19.759
Yeah.
00:18:20.240 --> 00:18:30.480
And no, I fell in love with his acting watching that show, like episode one, and then seeing him here and getting awards made me very happy and emotional.
00:18:30.799 --> 00:18:31.680
Me too.
00:18:32.079 --> 00:18:34.480
Okay, sorry for my rants, everybody.
00:18:34.640 --> 00:18:39.440
I just feel like a mama bird, very protective of horror comedy.
00:18:39.839 --> 00:18:42.480
And that's all I have to say about that.
00:18:43.359 --> 00:18:48.960
So, Ali, what do we know about Widows Bay, the the bare bones of the TV series?
00:18:49.200 --> 00:18:51.839
It premiered in April 2026.
00:18:52.240 --> 00:18:54.480
We we started watching it a little later.
00:18:54.880 --> 00:19:00.240
I feel like when the finale was about to come out, because we kind of wanted to to binge the whole show.
00:19:00.480 --> 00:19:07.440
And then the creator and showrunner is Katie Dippold of Parks and Wreck.
00:19:07.680 --> 00:19:09.359
But also The Heat.
00:19:09.920 --> 00:19:12.160
Yes, which Allie loves, as do I.
00:19:12.400 --> 00:19:14.400
I think it is a brilliant comedy.
00:19:14.559 --> 00:19:16.240
I think it's it is fucking hilarious.
00:19:16.559 --> 00:19:18.319
Are you are you not a na.
00:19:18.720 --> 00:19:19.359
Are you?
00:19:20.640 --> 00:19:22.000
It's one of my favorites.
00:19:22.160 --> 00:19:27.920
I do think the the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy is is incredible.
00:19:28.160 --> 00:19:28.960
Agreed.
00:19:29.279 --> 00:19:33.599
And she is also of Baba Duke Girl at Party Fame.
00:19:33.759 --> 00:19:37.119
Do you remember when this went viral on social media, Ali?
00:19:37.519 --> 00:19:38.880
You all have to look this up.
00:19:39.279 --> 00:19:39.519
Yes.
00:19:39.680 --> 00:19:46.400
If you have not seen it, so Katie Dippold went viral, I guess it was maybe what, 10 years ago, when she dressed up.
00:19:46.559 --> 00:19:52.880
It's very similar to the Katie at Mean Girl situation where you don't get the memo for what kind of Halloween party it is.
00:19:53.039 --> 00:19:53.200
Yes.
00:19:53.440 --> 00:19:58.799
And she just dressed up as the Bobaduke and showed up at How did she turn it?
00:19:58.880 --> 00:20:03.519
It was like clearly just like an adult wine and cheese Halloween party where no one else was dressed up.
00:20:03.839 --> 00:20:04.720
We'll have to post that.
00:20:04.880 --> 00:20:05.039
Yes.
00:20:06.079 --> 00:20:08.880
Well included in the Instagram post for this episode.
00:20:09.200 --> 00:20:18.960
And as I think we mentioned briefly earlier, I think the lore is that she started working on the general idea for this as a parks and rec episode.
00:20:19.119 --> 00:20:26.480
And then it seems like really kept hold of it until she found a platform that was going to pick it up and do it justice.
00:20:26.559 --> 00:20:29.359
And I'm really glad she did wait because it was well worth it.
00:20:29.519 --> 00:20:30.720
Apple TV, man.
00:20:30.960 --> 00:20:31.599
Apple TV.
00:20:32.079 --> 00:20:36.799
People sleep on Apple TV shows, and I just I don't get it.
00:20:36.880 --> 00:20:37.680
They're some of the best.
00:20:37.839 --> 00:20:42.240
Severance, Plurbis, uh, the reboot of Fraggle Rock.
00:20:42.559 --> 00:20:42.960
Yes.
00:20:43.519 --> 00:20:45.359
So so many choices.
00:20:45.680 --> 00:20:53.359
So I I'm curious about the data because to me it seems that it's maybe the least popular of the major streaming platforms.
00:20:53.599 --> 00:20:56.720
I think even John Oliver made a joke about this at one point.
00:20:56.799 --> 00:21:00.240
It's like somehow it is the most lauded streaming platform.
00:21:00.319 --> 00:21:05.599
Like it gets a ton of awards and everyone loves it, and yet no one is watching it or has a subscription.
00:21:06.319 --> 00:21:16.559
But I would definitely recommend getting a free trial if you want, because all these episodes are out and binging them if you'd like, or you know, subscribing for a month or two to see the show if you haven't already.
00:21:16.799 --> 00:21:18.480
Apple sponsor us, Apple Plus.
00:21:19.359 --> 00:21:21.200
That did seem like a shameless plug.
00:21:21.440 --> 00:21:24.079
So, Ellie, we're gonna be talking about two episodes today.
00:21:24.160 --> 00:21:30.160
Like we said, the pilot, Welcome to Widows Bay, followed by the second episode, Lodging.
00:21:30.319 --> 00:21:36.720
Both of them are directed by Hairo Marai, who I like this up, directed Childish Gambino's This Is America music video.
00:21:37.119 --> 00:21:38.000
Amazing music video.
00:21:38.160 --> 00:21:42.319
He I guess he's like well and truly on his way to an eagle, because I think that got the Grammy.
00:21:42.799 --> 00:21:44.960
And he also worked on the show Atlanta.
00:21:45.039 --> 00:21:49.039
And I thought you'd appreciate this, Ali, uh directed four episodes of Barry.
00:21:49.200 --> 00:21:52.480
Oh, another dark comedy feels right.
00:21:53.759 --> 00:21:59.039
And the first episode was written by Katie Dippold, and the second by Kelly Galuska.
00:21:59.200 --> 00:21:59.759
Love to see some women.
00:22:00.240 --> 00:22:00.880
Writers in the room.
00:22:01.119 --> 00:22:01.519
We do.
00:22:01.839 --> 00:22:04.720
And it was also starring Matthew Reese, who we love.
00:22:04.960 --> 00:22:10.799
Kate O'Flynn, Kevin Carroll, Stephen Root, Dale Dickey?
00:22:10.960 --> 00:22:15.599
Yeah, Dale Dickey plays Rosemary, and it is somehow the most appropriate name.
00:22:15.920 --> 00:22:17.119
Dale Dickey.
00:22:17.440 --> 00:22:22.079
Kay Callen, Neil Casey, Toby Huss, and others.
00:22:22.400 --> 00:22:22.640
Yes.
00:22:22.720 --> 00:22:25.920
And we'll be updating that list as we go through different episodes.
00:22:26.319 --> 00:22:28.720
So you want to start with Welcome to Widows Bay?
00:22:28.880 --> 00:22:30.799
I think that's a very good place to start, Allie.
00:22:31.440 --> 00:22:33.519
Would you like to start from the beginning of the show?
00:22:33.839 --> 00:22:34.720
Why don't we?
00:22:34.960 --> 00:22:35.599
Why not?
00:22:36.079 --> 00:22:46.559
We won't be like one of my friends who would read like the last page of a bookslash sometimes look at like the last episode of a series, and she would always say, Well, I just want to know if it's worth it.
00:22:46.640 --> 00:22:49.920
You know, if it seems like it's a bad ending, then why would I pay attention?
00:22:50.720 --> 00:22:52.319
My mouth is open.
00:22:52.640 --> 00:22:54.640
I couldn't, I cannot imagine.
00:22:54.960 --> 00:23:05.119
It was one thing being raised in like the 90s and early aughts where there was like commercials and you would just kind of like settle into a movie that happened halfway through on TBS.
00:23:05.359 --> 00:23:06.720
It was a unique philosophy.
00:23:06.799 --> 00:23:08.799
I think she has since changed.
00:23:09.519 --> 00:23:13.599
Alright, so we open the series on a shart.
00:23:16.559 --> 00:23:18.720
Oh, the poop jokes continue.
00:23:19.440 --> 00:23:20.160
We open on a shard.
00:23:20.559 --> 00:23:22.480
We open on a massive shart.
00:23:24.160 --> 00:23:29.920
We open the series on a shot of dark water, which seems very appropriate.
00:23:30.400 --> 00:23:34.240
And there's a solitary fishing boat floating on the water.
00:23:34.559 --> 00:23:44.240
And on board an older fisherman named Shep, very old fisherman name, I would say, is talking on the marine radio to someone about his marital woes.
00:23:44.799 --> 00:23:46.480
Then we see who's listening in.
00:23:46.559 --> 00:23:52.000
It's another older man named Lonnie who's watching Family Feud in the Harbor Master's office.
00:23:52.319 --> 00:23:53.839
I appreciated that little detail.
00:23:54.079 --> 00:24:01.680
And you can tell as Shep's talking that it seems like he was a pretty uh bad husband and his wife was pulling away from the relationship for years.
00:24:01.839 --> 00:24:07.440
I'd love to sit on like the couch with Shep and really hear his take on this uh relational issue.
00:24:07.759 --> 00:24:15.519
I also love that he's like, and then I left her, and then the guy on the other line's like, seems like she left you a long time ago, basically.
00:24:16.559 --> 00:24:18.880
You tell yourself that Sheppy boy.
00:24:19.119 --> 00:24:29.200
So suddenly Lonnie sees something funny on his radar screen, and he tells Shep that he's uh he's seeing something, not what you want to hear from the harbor master.
00:24:29.599 --> 00:24:39.519
And just then the electricity cuts out on Shep's boat, and he heads outside to see a large flock of seabirds flying overhead as a heavy fog rolls in.
00:24:39.759 --> 00:24:46.240
And we then pan up from the boat to see an island in the near distance lit by a single lighthouse.
00:24:46.559 --> 00:24:48.799
And what is the name of this island, you might ask?
00:24:48.960 --> 00:24:53.680
Well, the series title appears making it very clear it's Widow's Bay.
00:24:53.920 --> 00:25:03.359
We cut to the island itself, where a car is parked under a wind-rustled tree and filled with a different kind of fog. 'Tis the fog of Reefer.
00:25:04.559 --> 00:25:15.440
So inside the car, a teenager named Evan is hanging out with his two friends, and he and his buddy are playing a prank on their other friend, pretending they can't hear him.
00:25:15.759 --> 00:25:20.160
I mean, this is, first of all, a really funny stoner joke.
00:25:20.400 --> 00:25:26.960
And like probably something I would do, but also would scare the shit out of me if I was stoned.
00:25:27.039 --> 00:25:29.200
I'd be like, can you guys really not hear me?
00:25:29.440 --> 00:25:30.240
You really can't hear me.
00:25:30.400 --> 00:25:34.880
It reminds me of the Magic for Humans episode where Oh my god.
00:25:35.440 --> 00:25:36.240
What's the name of the host?
00:25:36.319 --> 00:25:44.640
I'm blinking on it, but he does a magic experiment where everyone is in on the joke and he makes this person think that no one can see or hear him.
00:25:44.880 --> 00:25:46.000
It's amazing.
00:25:46.160 --> 00:25:47.839
It's a frightening concept.
00:25:48.880 --> 00:25:59.119
So they're fun, and games are interrupted when, just as what happened with Shep's boat, the electricity in their car suddenly goes out, followed by what looks like the electricity of the entire island.
00:25:59.440 --> 00:26:00.480
Which is a wild thing.
00:26:00.640 --> 00:26:02.799
Why is the electricity in the car?
00:26:03.119 --> 00:26:04.160
A great question.
00:26:04.640 --> 00:26:06.480
What kind of blackout is this?
00:26:06.880 --> 00:26:14.079
We cut to a dark bedroom where the entire room suddenly begins to shake, waking a man who's been asleep in bed.
00:26:14.160 --> 00:26:17.519
And this man, as we find out, is Tom Loftus.
00:26:18.000 --> 00:26:21.759
He wakes in a panic and shouts the name of his son, Evan.
00:26:22.160 --> 00:26:27.039
Uh, but when he runs into Evan's room to check on him, Evan isn't there, as as we well know.
00:26:27.359 --> 00:26:28.160
Teenagers.
00:26:28.480 --> 00:26:30.240
Typical teenage nanogans.
00:26:30.400 --> 00:26:31.759
Did you ever sneak out, Allie?
00:26:32.000 --> 00:26:33.599
Never never, not once.
00:26:33.920 --> 00:26:34.079
No.
00:26:34.240 --> 00:26:35.200
I didn't even consider it.
00:26:35.359 --> 00:26:36.640
I was such a good ET shoe.
00:26:37.279 --> 00:26:38.400
My parents were also chill.
00:26:38.480 --> 00:26:42.880
They were like, just tell us where you're going and like don't make us wait up.
00:26:42.960 --> 00:26:43.440
Like, you know.
00:26:44.720 --> 00:26:51.920
You and I were both, I think, very well-behaved teenagers who didn't even have a curfew because their parents trusted us that much.
00:26:52.000 --> 00:26:52.960
Yeah for good reason.
00:26:53.119 --> 00:26:53.759
Yeah.
00:26:54.000 --> 00:26:56.400
Uh, but no shade to people who did sneak out.
00:26:56.559 --> 00:27:08.799
I remember reading Tegan and Sarah's biography memoir and reading about the things they were getting up to at 14, and I was like, man, this is just a different type of person.
00:27:09.519 --> 00:27:09.839
No.
00:27:10.079 --> 00:27:18.640
I can't imagine they're just talking about like doing like hallucinogenic drugs and sneaking out and walking along the highway when they're freshmen in high school.
00:27:18.799 --> 00:27:21.519
And I could never be that rebellious or cool.
00:27:21.680 --> 00:27:22.000
Never.
00:27:22.160 --> 00:27:23.359
Not in a million years.
00:27:23.599 --> 00:27:25.039
I never even drank.
00:27:25.200 --> 00:27:26.160
No, me neither.
00:27:26.319 --> 00:27:28.400
That is, I mean, I just I really didn't.
00:27:28.559 --> 00:27:32.960
I I smoked weed once and then I came home and I was like, I did not like that.
00:27:33.119 --> 00:27:34.319
That did not feel good.
00:27:34.400 --> 00:27:35.759
And my parents were like, okay.
00:27:35.920 --> 00:27:37.039
And now you know.
00:27:38.000 --> 00:27:44.960
I think uh what after you'd come out to when you were like, I don't really like alcohol either, your mom's like, well, go out and have fun however you can, I guess.
00:27:45.200 --> 00:27:48.720
Not gonna get pregnant, not gonna get drunk or aye.
00:27:49.359 --> 00:27:50.240
We'll have fun.
00:27:50.400 --> 00:27:58.720
We cut to the next morning where a radio host informs us that the island experienced its first quake in 20 years.
00:27:59.119 --> 00:28:01.279
And I'm sure that length of time is irrelevant, right?
00:28:01.599 --> 00:28:02.240
Problems with nothing.
00:28:02.640 --> 00:28:02.880
No.
00:28:03.200 --> 00:28:12.720
Tom Loftus pulls his car into a reserved parking spot outside the town hall, and that's when we find out that he is in fact uh the mayor of this fine island town.
00:28:12.960 --> 00:28:14.240
I would love that job.
00:28:14.480 --> 00:28:18.079
To be mayor of a small island town.
00:28:18.720 --> 00:28:21.680
No, couldn't pay me enough, I don't think.
00:28:22.000 --> 00:28:23.359
Well, you could pay me enough.
00:28:23.599 --> 00:28:24.079
You could pay me enough.
00:28:24.319 --> 00:28:27.839
But it'd have to be a certain amount that I don't think a small island budget.
00:28:28.319 --> 00:28:29.119
No, that's true.
00:28:29.200 --> 00:28:29.759
That's true.
00:28:30.240 --> 00:28:33.279
I also wouldn't be this devoted to making it a tourist community.
00:28:33.519 --> 00:28:38.319
I think that's the answer is that I would be very devoted to helping the town and it would drive me into an early grave.
00:28:38.559 --> 00:28:39.839
Yeah, yeah, I think it would.
00:28:40.000 --> 00:28:50.480
Unfortunately, I think I share a lot of Tom's personality traits, and I would go bananas if everyone on the staff was incompetent as Tom's uh lovely little staff appears to be.
00:28:50.799 --> 00:28:58.880
So inside the town hall, Tom is greeted by Patricia, who is kind of like his uh number two, the deputy do a sheriff, as it were.
00:28:59.200 --> 00:29:01.920
And we quickly get a feeling for the island vibe.
00:29:02.079 --> 00:29:10.240
No one else in this town hall seems to be that motivated to just like work, uh at least not like type A Tom Loftus.
00:29:10.400 --> 00:29:18.480
And Patricia introduces the fact at this point that Tom is expecting a New York Times travel writer on the island that day.
00:29:18.640 --> 00:29:22.319
Very big news, and not a good time for an island-wide blackout.
00:29:22.559 --> 00:29:30.480
And this is when you really, I think, see a lot of the vestiges of the Parks and Rec inspiration.
00:29:30.799 --> 00:29:37.920
I think that Tom is essentially a more curmudgeonly male version of Leslie Nope.
00:29:38.079 --> 00:29:38.160
Right.
00:29:38.319 --> 00:29:47.359
She just cares so deeply about this town getting tourist status and is constantly running into other people who do not care nearly as much as he does.
00:29:47.680 --> 00:29:53.680
No, I mean Ron Swanson is literally a character that works for the government so he can see the government fail.
00:29:53.920 --> 00:29:54.400
Like yes.
00:29:54.640 --> 00:29:59.440
So I I I kind of love that it does feel like, yeah, like April doesn't care.
00:29:59.599 --> 00:30:02.000
No one really cares in the office in Parks and Rec.
00:30:02.160 --> 00:30:10.319
So but similar to Parks and Rec, you get a cast of characters who are very funny and quirky and each have their own particular flaws.
00:30:10.720 --> 00:30:12.559
And I I really love it.
00:30:12.720 --> 00:30:14.640
I love a good small town setting.
00:30:14.880 --> 00:30:16.000
Definitely for that reason.
00:30:16.240 --> 00:30:32.400
So Tom checks in with Rosemary, one of the town hall workers who is in the middle of a little smoke and asks if she got hold of a man named Mitch, and she says something about how she called him five times and he said he'd call her back, but he didn't.
00:30:33.039 --> 00:30:34.240
No, that's that.
00:30:34.480 --> 00:30:46.880
Then Rosemary, who's, shall we say, a blunt woman, uh, launches right into a little attack, a little morning attack of Tom by telling him not to act like he's better than everyone else when he can't pay back his loans.
00:30:46.960 --> 00:30:50.319
So we get a little peek into Tom's own personal issues.
00:30:50.640 --> 00:30:50.880
Yes.
00:30:50.960 --> 00:31:14.960
And I just I have to say it, like Matthew Reese is the prime example of someone who did not get Botox or anything because of the crap, like his his facial expressions and micro expressions, beautiful acting, just someone who is passionate about his craft more than he is about, oh my goodness, I have like a wrinkle on my face.
00:31:15.119 --> 00:31:16.079
Cause I I don't know.
00:31:16.240 --> 00:31:20.400
That's just I feel like he also has the advantage of being a man where there's a little less pressure.
00:31:20.720 --> 00:31:24.079
This is I would have pressure across the genders for sure.
00:31:24.400 --> 00:31:24.480
Yeah.
00:31:24.960 --> 00:31:28.960
Many uh male actor also go down the freezer face route.
00:31:29.200 --> 00:31:29.519
Yes.
00:31:29.920 --> 00:31:32.640
It makes me sad that anyone even feels that pressure.
00:31:32.880 --> 00:31:41.359
But as you said, Matthew Reese has definitely not given in because you see every little hard-earned crevice in that forehead go into action.
00:31:41.680 --> 00:31:46.160
Yeah, and like literally just by his facial expressions make me laugh out loud.
00:31:46.400 --> 00:31:46.799
Yes.
00:31:46.960 --> 00:31:53.759
Uh so uh as we can see from Tom's uh expressions, this is not information he wants out there.
00:31:53.920 --> 00:31:58.160
And we can tell too, it's you know, just typical small town, everybody's and everybody else's business.
00:31:58.240 --> 00:32:03.359
So another worker, Dale, slides into frame and asks, who Tom owes money to.
00:32:03.599 --> 00:32:08.559
And Rosemary calmly just says that, you know, Tom won't get any gossip from her.
00:32:08.880 --> 00:32:10.319
She would never gossip.
00:32:10.480 --> 00:32:17.440
And then she proceeds to gossip, revealing in the process that she's got a thing for running people's genealogies.
00:32:17.759 --> 00:32:19.759
So flag that information for later.
00:32:20.319 --> 00:32:25.119
It takes patience and perseverance, but Tom finally gets the details he needs out of Rosemary.
00:32:25.519 --> 00:32:28.960
She reports that the island's power will be coming back soon.
00:32:29.119 --> 00:32:40.559
Uh, but Tom's got another problem because Wayne, the owner of the island's only nice restaurant, the Salty Whale, is going to be closing down for the rest of the day due to the outage.
00:32:40.880 --> 00:32:43.759
And Tom replies, the fuck he is.
00:32:44.720 --> 00:32:55.200
So he dredges into his office and we're introduced to the final sweet but incompetent worker, Ruth, his little administrative assistant Ruth.
00:32:55.359 --> 00:32:58.319
I it's sad because I do identify too much with Tom.
00:32:58.400 --> 00:33:04.000
Like, this is a Taipei's worst nightmare where you have to rely on other people's work and nobody cares or works as much as you do.
00:33:04.240 --> 00:33:08.079
And everyone is just like, Tom, she's an older woman.
00:33:08.240 --> 00:33:14.799
I feel like later it comes on that she's just like like constantly like taking nap time, which is something, yeah.
00:33:15.119 --> 00:33:17.359
Ali is like, sign me up, sign me up for this position.
00:33:17.599 --> 00:33:18.799
I'm a big napper.
00:33:19.039 --> 00:33:21.680
And my naps are two and a half hours long.
00:33:22.160 --> 00:33:23.039
You do it right.
00:33:23.200 --> 00:33:25.519
Catherine, I don't know if if you guys could tell.
00:33:25.599 --> 00:33:27.920
Catherine's nap time, five to ten minutes.
00:33:28.000 --> 00:33:29.680
My body won't let me sleep more than 15 minutes.
00:33:29.839 --> 00:33:31.039
And she wakes up, she's like, hi.
00:33:31.359 --> 00:33:31.839
Yeah.
00:33:32.000 --> 00:33:33.599
It's almost like it's genetic, man.
00:33:33.680 --> 00:33:34.720
I don't tell you.
00:33:35.279 --> 00:33:45.119
Tom rings up Wayne and he begs him not to close down the restaurant, uh, despite the fact that none of its appliances are working, and just reassures him, hey, buddy, like the power's gonna come back on.
00:33:45.359 --> 00:33:52.640
And during this conversation, he reveals that he has been trying to get this travel writer on the island for three years.
00:33:52.799 --> 00:33:58.640
But Wayne kind of replies with the general vibe of this town, just that small town xenophobia, where he's like, so what?
00:33:58.720 --> 00:33:59.359
I don't know him.
00:33:59.519 --> 00:34:00.720
I don't know this guy.
00:34:00.960 --> 00:34:03.920
So just then the power comes back on in town hall.
00:34:04.240 --> 00:34:07.519
Tom assures Wayne that it'll reach the salty whale soon.
00:34:07.599 --> 00:34:11.920
And Wayne begrudgingly says he'll keep the restaurant open, but he's not happy about it.
00:34:12.079 --> 00:34:16.480
And Tom requests a table by the window, and no Kathy.
00:34:16.960 --> 00:34:24.719
So Patricia comes into Tom's office where they talk about the travel writer, and very well established that we've got big stakes right off the bat.
00:34:24.880 --> 00:34:30.320
If the writer runs the article, it would be a huge boon to tourist season in the summer.
00:34:30.800 --> 00:34:35.679
And there are so many little visual details throughout this episode.
00:34:35.760 --> 00:34:54.800
I was telling Allie when I was writing the scripts, which are I admittedly very granular, but like I spent so much more time just going through this 40-minute episode than like an entire Tour of Conri movie because there are it's very dialogue-heavy, first of all, but there's also so many little bits and bops.
00:34:55.039 --> 00:35:06.880
So to give an idea, he's like, as he's talking to Patricia, flipping through this wolf-themed calendar, and then he reaches July's photograph, which is just a picture of an overturned, overturned truck on some desolate road.
00:35:07.039 --> 00:35:08.800
It's a ma it's just amazing.
00:35:09.119 --> 00:35:11.519
And as you said, Tom is the perfect face for this.
00:35:11.679 --> 00:35:16.480
Tom, Matthew Reese is a perfect face for this show because it's every little unsettling detail.
00:35:16.639 --> 00:35:19.440
There's a new little crinkle on his face.
00:35:19.599 --> 00:35:21.039
Yeah, it's like the what the fuck crinkle.
00:35:21.360 --> 00:35:21.519
Yes.
00:35:23.039 --> 00:35:30.480
So Patricia mentions that, you know, understandably, the earthquake has the town a little shaken up, literally and figuratively.
00:35:30.719 --> 00:35:38.639
But Tom plays it down, and we get the start of what we'll soon learn is a fun little rapport between Tom and Patricia.
00:35:38.880 --> 00:35:41.519
I think a better insight into Patricia's character as well.
00:35:41.599 --> 00:35:48.320
Like, I think he calls the writer he, and Patricia's like, you know, the writer could be a woman, and he's like, the paper told me that it's a man.
00:35:48.559 --> 00:35:50.079
She's like, Oh, well, that's fine.
00:35:50.239 --> 00:35:51.280
It's fine, I guess.
00:35:51.519 --> 00:35:56.960
And then Tom says that they have to show the writer a good time, and Patricia's like, What are you asking me to do, Tom?
00:35:57.199 --> 00:36:00.800
And he's just like, What do you think I'm asking you to do?
00:36:01.760 --> 00:36:11.199
So Ruth comes into the room to tell Tom that two different people have called him twice: a man named Wick Carpenter and the island sheriff Bashir.
00:36:11.519 --> 00:36:21.039
So Tom calls the sheriff first, who informs him that Shep Clark, the sailor we saw at the beginning of the episode, has gone missing.
00:36:21.360 --> 00:36:29.360
And Bashir knows a dynamic we've been gotten to pick up on, which is that Tom seems to have this antipathy towards the entire rest of the town.
00:36:29.519 --> 00:36:33.280
I think he just straight up says, like, why are you the mayor if you hate everyone so much?
00:36:33.840 --> 00:36:41.599
And Tom replies, let one of them be in charge, uh, which just further proves the point that he does not trust or respect anybody else on this island.
00:36:41.760 --> 00:36:42.000
Yeah.
00:36:42.239 --> 00:36:50.800
So Bashir fills Tom in more on the situation by saying that the harbor master lost sight of Shep entirely on his VHF.
00:36:51.039 --> 00:36:58.719
And there's now a heavy fog rolling in, and he thinks that they should cancel all operations on the water until the fog clears.
00:36:58.800 --> 00:37:00.320
Uh, but Tom is not having this.
00:37:00.400 --> 00:37:05.519
It's a real mayor of Amity, almost said Amityville, Amity Island vibe.
00:37:05.760 --> 00:37:06.239
Oh, yeah.
00:37:06.400 --> 00:37:15.920
We're gonna talk at the end of each episode about all of the different homages and like horror references, but we're getting major Jaws vibes where he's like, nope, absolutely.
00:37:16.320 --> 00:37:19.519
Fine if the ferry crashes, but we have to have tourism.
00:37:19.760 --> 00:37:21.599
Safety, fuck it.
00:37:22.000 --> 00:37:25.599
So he insists that the Harbor Master cannot close the island.
00:37:25.679 --> 00:37:29.599
They have a reporter coming in, they have fog year-round anyway.
00:37:29.679 --> 00:37:33.920
But Bashir notes that this isn't their usual fog.
00:37:35.039 --> 00:37:39.679
And just then Tom looks out his window to see that the normally 11 a.m.
00:37:39.760 --> 00:37:41.440
ferry has arrived early.
00:37:41.599 --> 00:37:49.360
So he's panicked, he leaves the office, drives out to the dock, and the ferry captain ran the ferry early to get ahead of the fog.
00:37:49.679 --> 00:37:52.559
But luckily, the New York Times writer was early too.
00:37:52.639 --> 00:37:56.880
And he tells Tom that he sent him ahead to the historical society.
00:37:57.119 --> 00:38:03.679
And get the feeling from the look on Tom's face that maybe this is not the best first impression for our travel writer.
00:38:03.920 --> 00:38:09.199
Like it feels like it's the worst place for him to be in Tom's eyes.
00:38:09.760 --> 00:38:11.599
Uh, and we're about to find out why.
00:38:11.760 --> 00:38:18.639
So over at the Historical Society, a woman named Jerry shows the travel writer around their little mini museum.
00:38:18.800 --> 00:38:20.880
I I adore museums like this.
00:38:21.039 --> 00:38:23.519
I'm sure you've been to many over the course of your life, Allie.
00:38:23.840 --> 00:38:29.599
Just little small town museums where they've put together the local exhibits.
00:38:29.760 --> 00:38:30.000
No?
00:38:30.159 --> 00:38:31.360
I don't, maybe not so much.
00:38:31.760 --> 00:38:38.079
So I feel as though your family was probably way more into like, let's go to the historical society.
00:38:38.320 --> 00:38:38.639
That's true.
00:38:38.719 --> 00:38:41.920
We were a big museum and a historical society type uh family.
00:38:42.239 --> 00:38:45.440
And I, you know, maybe one or two in my life.
00:38:45.679 --> 00:38:46.960
In your life.
00:38:47.840 --> 00:38:49.039
Maybe one or two.
00:38:49.679 --> 00:38:53.840
Well, all that to say that it is the vibe of your typical small town museum.
00:38:54.000 --> 00:39:05.039
Allie and I are about to go uh back to my hometown in central Kentucky, and there is a place there I think I've brought up before on the show way back when called Shaker Village.
00:39:05.280 --> 00:39:06.719
I'm very excited.
00:39:07.039 --> 00:39:07.920
As am I.
00:39:08.079 --> 00:39:19.119
It's it's giving these types of vibes where it was first created by a band of uh Shakers, a religious sect that was somewhat similar to the Quakers.
00:39:19.199 --> 00:39:20.800
There was a little quaking and shaking going on.
00:39:21.119 --> 00:39:21.920
Quaking and shaking.
00:39:22.079 --> 00:39:26.000
Yes, but one of the big tenets of the religion was that they were celibate.
00:39:26.079 --> 00:39:45.679
So as you might imagine, um, they died out, died out pretty quick, but it's still there, and it's this really eerie and beautiful colonial style village, and they also have little exhibits that are just like this historical society, minus the cannibalism, as we'll soon find out.
00:39:45.920 --> 00:39:54.159
I'm also just very excited because they have some like fried apples and some good, some good, good food that I'm very much looking forward to.
00:39:54.400 --> 00:39:56.800
The biscuits, I'm ready.
00:39:57.039 --> 00:39:58.000
Oh, you should be ready.
00:39:58.079 --> 00:40:01.280
I think this is a perfect example of left to your own devices, Ali.
00:40:01.599 --> 00:40:06.239
The priority would be maybe the restaurant and not the museum exhibits.
00:40:06.559 --> 00:40:09.280
Yeah, like I would want to walk around it with my coffee.
00:40:09.440 --> 00:40:14.000
I'm excited, but it's like don't get me wrong, but the main attraction biscuits.
00:40:14.880 --> 00:40:31.840
So Jerry explains to the reporter that the island began as a whaling community, and the men at the island would sometimes be gone for years at a time, and the women would wear down the floorboards pacing, waiting for the men to come home, but most would not.
00:40:32.400 --> 00:40:41.840
And as the woman speaks, we get glimpses of framed old newspaper articles with titles like Priest Eaten by Whale and Man Found Dead by Horse.
00:40:43.039 --> 00:40:45.199
So Tom bursts into the scene.
00:40:45.280 --> 00:40:55.280
He's clearly dead set on taking the reins from Jerry, and the writer introduces himself as Arthur Lloyd, and he tells Tom that Jerry was just giving him a history lesson.
00:40:55.440 --> 00:40:59.920
And Tom just quickly summarizes it, you know, 42 passengers left mainland to find an island.
00:41:00.000 --> 00:41:01.280
They could call their own.
00:41:01.360 --> 00:41:06.320
And Jerry cuts in to say, actually, uh, there were 43 passengers.
00:41:06.880 --> 00:41:10.639
And Tom tells her that it's uh a little too early for that story.
00:41:12.239 --> 00:41:18.880
He says that the settlers arrived on a totally empty island, and Jerry interjects again, except for the teeth.
00:41:19.199 --> 00:41:21.519
Which we what's going on with the teeth?
00:41:21.679 --> 00:41:22.800
I'm so excited.
00:41:23.119 --> 00:41:24.480
We have questions for season two.
00:41:24.880 --> 00:41:29.280
Yeah, it's gotta be season two because as we get to the next episode, there are more teeth.
00:41:29.440 --> 00:41:30.400
There's some teeth references.
00:41:30.639 --> 00:41:33.280
There's teeth, which ugh I hate teeth.
00:41:33.599 --> 00:41:37.599
I don't like that we have exposed bone on our face.
00:41:37.760 --> 00:41:38.320
I don't like it.
00:41:38.559 --> 00:41:40.400
Makes me makes me really uneasy.
00:41:40.800 --> 00:41:42.880
Yeah, and that's completely fair.
00:41:43.199 --> 00:41:45.920
I think it's more unusual that I'm not bothered by teeth.
00:41:46.079 --> 00:41:47.119
It's true horror.
00:41:47.280 --> 00:41:48.880
Why are the bones out?
00:41:49.599 --> 00:41:50.960
Take back the bones.
00:41:52.079 --> 00:42:03.599
So the point he's trying to make, uh, Tom says, is that these settlers had to build everything on the island from scratch during what's believed to be the harshest winter in Widows Bay's history.
00:42:03.920 --> 00:42:10.079
And it's all thanks to their remarkable leader and very first mayor, Richard Warren.
00:42:10.639 --> 00:42:17.920
And he gestures to a painting of a fearless-looking man in colonial garb pointing from his little boat toward the island of Widows Bay.
00:42:18.159 --> 00:42:20.400
I wonder if that will come back into play at any point.
00:42:21.199 --> 00:42:32.000
Jerry says that she was just about to show Arthur their witch trial display and shows off a bloody little pilgrim dress and announces that the trial is a great source of pride in the community.
00:42:32.639 --> 00:42:35.679
She says, like, we caught him, we burned him.
00:42:36.239 --> 00:42:37.280
Someone made a shirt.
00:42:37.360 --> 00:42:38.960
I saw the shirt on Etsy that said that.
00:42:39.199 --> 00:42:40.000
We caught him, we burned him.
00:42:40.159 --> 00:42:41.199
We caught him, we burned him.
00:42:41.360 --> 00:42:42.480
Not all of them.
00:42:42.880 --> 00:42:44.079
So Tom cuts in again.
00:42:44.239 --> 00:42:44.559
You know what?
00:42:44.639 --> 00:42:45.039
You know what?
00:42:45.119 --> 00:42:46.079
He's gonna take it from here.
00:42:46.239 --> 00:42:46.559
Yeah.
00:42:46.800 --> 00:42:58.239
Uh so he tries to do some damage control with Arthur and just says, you know, Jerry's commentary is just local color, and they've got a lot of local color in Widows Bay.
00:42:58.639 --> 00:43:04.239
And Arthur replies that the fairy captain told him something odd.
00:43:04.400 --> 00:43:07.679
He said, bad things happen here.
00:43:08.400 --> 00:43:13.119
And Tom says, you know, well, that that that is something about seafaring towns.
00:43:13.199 --> 00:43:16.320
They all have superstitions and tall tales.
00:43:16.480 --> 00:43:21.920
And, you know, maybe it's just that stories keep them occupied during their long days at sea, but it he finds that charming.
00:43:22.159 --> 00:43:23.760
There's there's nothing sinister about it at all.
00:43:24.000 --> 00:43:24.320
No.
00:43:24.639 --> 00:43:25.760
Was there cannibalism?
00:43:25.920 --> 00:43:27.360
Arthur asks point blank.
00:43:27.599 --> 00:43:28.800
No, says Tom.
00:43:28.880 --> 00:43:34.559
And then Arthur points up to a massive framed newspaper on the wall between them, which reads cannibalism in God's house.
00:43:34.719 --> 00:43:35.519
In God's house.
00:43:35.760 --> 00:43:37.039
It's hilarious.
00:43:37.440 --> 00:43:40.639
And Tom is like, you know what stories get exaggerated over time.
00:43:40.800 --> 00:43:44.079
Like, was there a deadly storm in 1786?
00:43:44.239 --> 00:43:47.119
And did a group of people get trapped inside the church?
00:43:47.280 --> 00:43:47.760
Yes.
00:43:48.000 --> 00:43:50.320
But did they immediately turn to cannibalism?
00:43:50.559 --> 00:43:50.880
No.
00:43:51.119 --> 00:43:54.079
No, that took four days.
00:43:55.599 --> 00:43:58.719
So it's clear at this point that Tom just has to get Arthur out of here.
00:43:58.800 --> 00:43:59.760
He is only going to.
00:44:00.400 --> 00:44:03.519
Continue to uncover unsavory facts about the town.
00:44:03.679 --> 00:44:08.239
So Tom ushers him out of the historical society and he says, you know what?
00:44:08.320 --> 00:44:12.000
The best way to learn about the town and the island as a whole is just to walk around it.
00:44:12.079 --> 00:44:23.119
And he gives Arthur kind of this approved list of places for him to visit, which I do find funny because I'm like, I mean, if Arthur is a good travel writer, he's he's gonna go off the beam path, which we find out later he does.
00:44:23.599 --> 00:44:28.880
Arthur makes a comment that he's been having a hard time getting reception on his cell phone.
00:44:29.119 --> 00:44:34.880
And, you know, I think Tom really should be a spin doctor because he just says, Well, you know what, you'll love the peace and quiet.
00:44:34.960 --> 00:44:36.400
He's got an answer for everything.
00:44:36.559 --> 00:44:39.440
And plus, the town has plenty of landlines.
00:44:39.599 --> 00:44:45.840
I do like that they set it up this way so that we're kind of thrust back into an 80s, 90s style horror setting.
00:44:46.079 --> 00:44:51.039
Yeah, I I really love it because I think it's just like we know what time period it is.
00:44:51.199 --> 00:44:51.920
Like we know what it is.
00:44:52.480 --> 00:44:53.840
There's cell phones, there's all that.
00:44:54.000 --> 00:45:02.320
But then every moment kind of that doesn't involve cell phones or them talking about the mainland, you do feel like what time period is this?
00:45:02.400 --> 00:45:04.320
Like, is it the late 90s?
00:45:04.559 --> 00:45:11.760
All the cars are old, it's clear that they brought cars over maybe in like the early aughts, and then so it's it I don't know.
00:45:12.079 --> 00:45:12.719
No, you're right.
00:45:12.880 --> 00:45:20.800
We see in the next episode that Tom has introduced like the first uh espresso machine basically that the islands ever had.
00:45:20.960 --> 00:45:27.199
So you definitely do get the feel that it's like at least 20, if not more, years behind the rest of the world.
00:45:27.440 --> 00:45:27.760
Yeah.
00:45:28.079 --> 00:45:31.360
So Tom gives Arthur that map of the island.
00:45:31.599 --> 00:45:42.880
He says to check out all of his favorite spots, including the lighthouse, and he's going to meet Arthur back at the Salty Whale for dinner that night, and they've got the best lobster in America.
00:45:43.039 --> 00:45:45.199
And Arthur points out that that's a pretty bold claim.
00:45:45.280 --> 00:45:49.119
You know, does he think Salty Whale can beat the lobster in Cape Cod?
00:45:49.440 --> 00:45:57.599
And this is where we get uh one of my favorite lines, maybe my favorite line from this episode, where Tom just says, Fuck Cape Cod.
00:45:57.760 --> 00:45:58.880
Fuck Cape Cod.
00:45:59.039 --> 00:46:01.039
It's just like the seriousness, too.
00:46:01.119 --> 00:46:02.400
Like there's no humor to it.
00:46:02.480 --> 00:46:08.079
He is just like no disdain filled with venom towards all the competing island towns.
00:46:08.320 --> 00:46:12.559
So Tom heads back to the town hall where he and his staff have a scheduled meeting.
00:46:12.719 --> 00:46:18.639
So we get a little bit more taste for this kind of small town, easygoing nature of the staff.
00:46:18.800 --> 00:46:22.559
They've been gabbing with Rosemary and they just found out she's colorblind.
00:46:22.800 --> 00:46:24.400
Something you two have in common.
00:46:24.880 --> 00:46:25.840
Yes, definitely.
00:46:26.000 --> 00:46:30.400
I thought about this because it it does make me laugh because I do describe my colorblind.
00:46:30.480 --> 00:46:32.880
I'm like, it's shades, and it just she's so funny.
00:46:32.960 --> 00:46:36.000
She's like, I see blue as blue-green.
00:46:36.559 --> 00:46:38.639
We've had very similar conversations.
00:46:39.199 --> 00:46:43.199
I really appreciate that she talks about this and she's wearing blue and green clothing.
00:46:44.159 --> 00:46:50.079
So Tom begins the meeting by asking where Ruth is, and uh Patricia informs him that she went home to nap.
00:46:50.159 --> 00:46:52.079
And Tom says it's it's 11 a.m.
00:46:52.400 --> 00:46:56.400
And yeah, this is when Patricia's like, she's an elderly woman.
00:46:58.079 --> 00:47:03.519
So Tom announces that Arthur Lloyd will be on the island for a full 24 hours.
00:47:03.760 --> 00:47:10.880
And Jerry's already filled his head with some nonsense, so he wants the staff to keep tabs on him the entire time.
00:47:11.039 --> 00:47:13.599
Make sure that he gets a good impression.
00:47:13.840 --> 00:47:19.039
And tomorrow he wants Dale to keep to the agreed-upon itinerary, keep it light.
00:47:19.199 --> 00:47:22.719
Uh so Dale asks, I guess you don't want me to take him to the old hospital.
00:47:24.239 --> 00:47:26.320
Uh no, says Tom, and I think you knew that.
00:47:26.400 --> 00:47:27.519
I think you knew that.
00:47:28.000 --> 00:47:32.800
And then Rosemary says something like, you know, it's perfectly safe to drive by the hospital, you just can't stop.
00:47:34.239 --> 00:47:44.000
So Tom's clearly had enough this morning, and he insists that they have a beautiful, peaceful town for tourists to come and relax, and that's all.
00:47:44.320 --> 00:47:49.280
And then we hear a new voice that says, Tell that to Shep Clark.
00:47:50.400 --> 00:47:51.760
It's Jaws.
00:47:52.000 --> 00:47:53.519
It's Jaws at its finest.
00:47:53.599 --> 00:47:54.719
It's like the nail on the chalk.
00:47:54.960 --> 00:47:55.679
Yeah, it's all of it.
00:47:55.840 --> 00:47:58.000
The literal nails going down the chalkboard and jaws.
00:47:58.079 --> 00:47:58.480
Yes.
00:47:58.639 --> 00:48:03.119
And we get introduced to the wizened old Wick Carpenter.
00:48:03.519 --> 00:48:09.199
And Wick uh cuts right to the chase and he just tells Tom, shut it down, shut it all down.
00:48:09.440 --> 00:48:10.400
It's starting.
00:48:11.039 --> 00:48:14.400
I can't hear that without thinking of Real Housewives.
00:48:14.639 --> 00:48:16.400
She's starting, she's starting.
00:48:16.880 --> 00:48:22.400
So the others seem to know about the it Wick is referring to.
00:48:22.559 --> 00:48:25.599
But Tom insists that this it is not real.
00:48:26.480 --> 00:48:28.639
And the fog did not take Shep.
00:48:28.719 --> 00:48:30.960
He's probably just sleeping it off somewhere.
00:48:31.119 --> 00:48:37.840
But Wick ins says that Tom needs to close the port, he needs to shut out the businesses and sound the siren.
00:48:38.159 --> 00:48:47.760
But when Tom refuses, Wick tells him that he refuses to accept the true history of the island and now it's finally going to get people killed.
00:48:48.000 --> 00:49:00.079
The truth, says Tom, is that their island has an outdated power grid, it has roads that need repair, no Wi-Fi, and infrastructure issues, not tall tales, are going to get people killed.
00:49:00.239 --> 00:49:05.199
And to get the money they need to repair that infrastructure, they need tourism.
00:49:05.440 --> 00:49:11.679
Which is a wild thing to say because it's like, okay, all of those things could also actually kill people.
00:49:11.840 --> 00:49:14.159
So you're bringing the tourism in.
00:49:14.639 --> 00:49:16.000
I mean, not the no wifi.
00:49:16.320 --> 00:49:19.199
Obviously, no wi-fi will not kill people.
00:49:19.679 --> 00:49:20.800
I don't know.
00:49:20.960 --> 00:49:21.679
Talk to certain people.
00:49:22.000 --> 00:49:23.599
Talk to certain people, and you might get a different.
00:49:24.000 --> 00:49:28.480
But like roads that need repairs can be dangerous, infrastructure issues.
00:49:28.800 --> 00:49:29.599
Dangerous.
00:49:30.000 --> 00:49:30.320
Yeah.
00:49:30.480 --> 00:49:33.760
The grid, you know, you're gonna put more strain on the grid, but you gotta start somewhere, right?
00:49:34.320 --> 00:49:35.119
You do, you do.
00:49:35.519 --> 00:49:44.079
But Wick is adamant that the island has lain dormant for years, but it's waking up again, and that is when the bad things happen.
00:49:44.239 --> 00:49:49.679
It's starting with the fog, and it's not natural fog, it's a haunt.
00:49:49.920 --> 00:50:03.280
At this point, Tom really starts mocking Wick, and he tells him, you know what, there's some people who just want to be miserable and just blame it all on a cursed island, but he will not let Wick take the town down with him.
00:50:03.440 --> 00:50:06.480
We have a wonderful little rivalry set up.
00:50:06.719 --> 00:50:10.000
Uh, man of science, man of faith almost.
00:50:10.639 --> 00:50:12.239
You know, I was gonna bring it up.
00:50:12.480 --> 00:50:16.000
Some of the moments in the show remind me of the best moments of Lost.
00:50:16.320 --> 00:50:18.000
Yeah, we're both big Lost fans.
00:50:18.159 --> 00:50:20.800
Allie more than me, she because she has it tattooed on her very body.
00:50:21.039 --> 00:50:23.039
I do have Lost tattooed on my body.
00:50:23.280 --> 00:50:28.559
But yeah, it's definitely giving a jack and lock dynamics here.
00:50:28.880 --> 00:50:34.719
Wick insists though that Tom needs to stay on the siren and that if he won't, Wick will.
00:50:35.119 --> 00:50:36.480
Battle lines have been drawn.
00:50:36.639 --> 00:50:42.960
And just then Bashir calls, and Tom takes the call and announces to everyone that Shep has been found.
00:50:43.599 --> 00:50:50.800
But when he excuses himself to his office to take the call in private, it's revealed that Shep has not, in fact, been found.
00:50:50.880 --> 00:50:52.800
Uh, he was just lying to calm everyone down.
00:50:53.039 --> 00:50:57.599
Bashir tells Tom that he is on his last legs as the sheriff.
00:50:57.760 --> 00:51:05.840
He already has to deal with teenagers running around the island up to no good, and he can be more specific if Tom would like.
00:51:06.800 --> 00:51:15.760
Tom stops by Patricia's office on his way out of the town hall, and Patricia has guessed that they haven't actually found Shep.
00:51:16.159 --> 00:51:20.159
And Tom just simply replies that that doesn't mean that a fucking fog took him.
00:51:20.480 --> 00:51:23.760
And he chastises Patricia for believing made up stories.
00:51:23.840 --> 00:51:26.880
She's just beginning to sound like the rest of the townspeople.
00:51:27.119 --> 00:51:36.719
But Patricia grows really morose and she brings up the boogeyman, a serial killer who terrorized teenage girls decades ago.
00:51:36.960 --> 00:51:40.079
And one of those teenagers was her.
00:51:40.639 --> 00:51:43.679
She was home alone when he came.
00:51:44.320 --> 00:51:46.159
Love the Halloween tagline reference.
00:51:46.320 --> 00:51:47.599
Wonder if that'll come up again.
00:51:47.840 --> 00:51:48.320
I know.
00:51:48.639 --> 00:51:54.480
And again, this whole episode previews little bits of every episode to come.
00:51:55.039 --> 00:51:57.599
So again, really fucking great writing.
00:51:57.760 --> 00:51:58.320
Yes, yes.
00:51:58.400 --> 00:52:00.000
It's excellent writing.
00:52:00.320 --> 00:52:04.639
And this is our first indication that Patricia is a grown-up final girl.
00:52:05.039 --> 00:52:06.800
Another dynamic that I love.
00:52:07.039 --> 00:52:16.960
And Patricia tells Tom that it was the most terrifying thing that has ever happened to her, and she still sleeps with her dresser pushed in front of her bedroom door all these years later.
00:52:17.280 --> 00:52:24.320
And then just Tom callously points out, but he murdered teenage girls, so like, you know, you're in your 40s, you'll be fine.
00:52:25.679 --> 00:52:27.840
Ever the sensitive gentleman, Tom.
00:52:28.400 --> 00:52:31.440
And Patricia understandably storms off.
00:52:31.679 --> 00:52:38.800
So Tom drives home to have a meal with his son Evan, who he finds smoking weed outside the house.
00:52:39.119 --> 00:52:40.880
This is my this is my favorite.
00:52:41.039 --> 00:52:41.440
Yeah.
00:52:41.599 --> 00:52:45.039
He like, yeah, he comes out and he's like clearly has a joint in his hand.
00:52:45.119 --> 00:52:47.840
And then the son's like, Do you know what this is?
00:52:48.079 --> 00:52:49.199
I found this.
00:52:49.760 --> 00:52:51.280
I was just trying to figure it out.
00:52:51.920 --> 00:52:52.239
Amazing.
00:52:52.639 --> 00:52:55.119
He's such a little smart ass kid inside.
00:52:56.559 --> 00:53:10.559
So Tom brings him in for a talk, and it's very well established at that this point that he's having a tough time with Evan, who has been chronically sneaking out at night, and Tom does not know how to get through to him.
00:53:10.800 --> 00:53:15.840
Tom says that Evan got his adventurous spirit from his now deceased mother.
00:53:16.000 --> 00:53:18.880
And for once we see a vulnerable side of Tom.
00:53:19.039 --> 00:53:23.679
He says that the moment he heard his wife's laugh, he knew she was the one.
00:53:24.159 --> 00:53:25.840
That's how I felt about you, Allie.
00:53:26.159 --> 00:53:27.519
Oh, when I listened.
00:53:30.000 --> 00:53:36.000
And um, that it took a bunch of persistence on his part, but they fell in love and they got married four months later.
00:53:36.239 --> 00:53:39.440
When okay, yes, she was already pregnant with Evan.
00:53:39.760 --> 00:53:48.320
But Tom finally gets to the point of his sappy little story, which was that Evan was the best surprise of his life, and he just wants to keep him safe.
00:53:48.639 --> 00:53:52.079
Just like me to my parents, absolutely a surprise.
00:53:53.039 --> 00:53:54.800
But the best surprise of their life.
00:53:56.400 --> 00:54:04.800
So, yeah, we have this kind of established old, like protective widow slash widow parent stereotype, you know, just call Tom Loftus King Triton.
00:54:04.960 --> 00:54:08.320
Just wants to keep his kiddo safe from the outside world.
00:54:08.480 --> 00:54:10.079
Uh, maybe for good reason.
00:54:10.400 --> 00:54:10.880
I don't know.
00:54:10.960 --> 00:54:12.559
We we might find out later why.
00:54:12.800 --> 00:54:16.800
Uh, but then Tom ruins it by saying, you know, the withdrawal method doesn't work, right?
00:54:17.119 --> 00:54:18.719
It's like, where did that come from?
00:54:19.039 --> 00:54:28.960
Someone's like, Oh, so Evan tells Tom that he's bored out of his mind, the island's like a prison, and Tom insists that things are going to change.
00:54:29.039 --> 00:54:33.599
So we have more high stakes on the family front as well as the island front.
00:54:33.840 --> 00:54:40.639
Yes, because it's so clear, it's becoming more clear that Tom is basically doing this for his son.
00:54:40.880 --> 00:54:41.280
Yes.
00:54:42.400 --> 00:54:47.679
Just then, Tom hears the distant wail of the island siren.
00:54:47.920 --> 00:54:51.760
And it appears that Wick has followed through on his threat.
00:54:51.920 --> 00:55:02.719
So Tom drives out to the harbor and confronts Wick, promising him that he'll listen to his side of the story for five minutes uninterrupted if he will just shut the siren off.
00:55:02.880 --> 00:55:12.960
So Wick begrudgingly agrees, and we cut to a local bar where Wick, Tom, and Patricia all sit together, and Wick lays out his case.
00:55:13.119 --> 00:55:18.079
He says there's something rotten on the island, and it all starts with the quake.
00:55:18.320 --> 00:55:24.880
I will say one of my favorite jokes is in this moment where he's like, and I don't want you to correct my grammar.
00:55:25.119 --> 00:55:27.920
And then he's like, I don't want to go tit for tit with you.
00:55:28.159 --> 00:55:36.320
And then it's just like him holding back with every fiber of his being, not to be like, let it go, let it go, Tom.
00:55:36.719 --> 00:55:37.599
Tit for tit.
00:55:38.639 --> 00:55:44.719
So Wick has brought these disturbing old drawings and paintings to kind of illustrate his point.
00:55:45.039 --> 00:55:56.880
So first he gives one of uh what happened in 1846, which they called the fog that stole souls, and he lays out um the kind of symptoms of this fog.
00:55:57.199 --> 00:56:07.440
He says, first the eyes turn white, then they go into stage two, which is loss of the five senses and delirium, and then stage three, loss of erection.
00:56:07.760 --> 00:56:11.599
And I think Ventricia asks, like, who the hell is trying after stage two?
00:56:13.519 --> 00:56:14.960
Why did I miss that?
00:56:15.119 --> 00:56:16.000
That's so funny.
00:56:16.320 --> 00:56:18.000
I missed it on my first watch too.
00:56:18.239 --> 00:56:22.639
But undeterred, Wick says that they might be in for another fate.
00:56:22.719 --> 00:56:29.679
Uh, they might be visited by the Revenants, aka zombies of Doomed Sailors.
00:56:29.920 --> 00:56:31.119
He gives them a new drawing.
00:56:31.280 --> 00:56:36.880
In 1873, the crew of the SS Mary had been missing for 62 years.
00:56:37.199 --> 00:56:41.039
It's said that the mayor had shuttered the lighthouse in order to run the ship aground.
00:56:41.199 --> 00:56:44.159
Also, he could marry the captain's young bride.
00:56:44.400 --> 00:56:45.519
She was 16.
00:56:45.920 --> 00:56:47.039
He was 53.
00:56:47.440 --> 00:56:58.000
Yeah, and Patricia begins to make this personal and then says, you know, an older man with a younger woman is okay sometimes, but it's when they start hitting on their younger friends after a breakup that it really crosses the line.
00:56:58.719 --> 00:57:01.840
Like, and finally Tom interjects.
00:57:01.920 --> 00:57:05.920
I think he's like, I've given them the five minutes, and have you both lost your minds?
00:57:06.079 --> 00:57:07.920
What is Wick even talking about?
00:57:08.159 --> 00:57:12.960
The only thing that they have to worry about is impressing the travel writer, and they could be the next Bar Harbor.
00:57:13.440 --> 00:57:15.760
Wick scoffs at him and begins to leave.
00:57:15.920 --> 00:57:21.360
But when Tom confronts him and says that he thinks that Wick's gripes with him are all personal, Wick says, you know what?
00:57:21.599 --> 00:57:22.239
They are.
00:57:22.480 --> 00:57:24.559
Wick doesn't think Tom can lead.
00:57:24.800 --> 00:57:34.400
And he then brings up an anecdote about when Tom and his little buddies used to doorbell ditch during Tom's childhood summer visits to the island.
00:57:34.639 --> 00:57:38.400
But Tom never actually doorbell ditched.
00:57:38.559 --> 00:57:43.519
He would pretend to ring the bell, and then he would run and tell his friends that he had.
00:57:43.840 --> 00:57:52.800
And that is why Wick doesn't trust Tom to lead his town, because he proved himself to be a goddamn coward and a liar to boot.
00:57:53.039 --> 00:57:55.039
Did you ever doorbell ditch?
00:57:55.519 --> 00:58:02.480
Well, Allie, as we've established, I was an insufferable goody two shoes who didn't sneak out, and I also did not doorbell ditch.
00:58:02.559 --> 00:58:03.119
Did you?
00:58:03.360 --> 00:58:03.760
Yeah.
00:58:04.079 --> 00:58:04.719
Oh, for sure.
00:58:05.119 --> 00:58:05.599
Really?
00:58:05.840 --> 00:58:06.480
For sure.
00:58:06.719 --> 00:58:11.920
Was it ever, was there like a scary house in your neighborhood, or was it just run of the mill, doorbell ditching?
00:58:12.079 --> 00:58:13.199
No, it was just run of the mill.
00:58:13.519 --> 00:58:19.119
But I I can vividly remember how scared I was when I did it.
00:58:19.360 --> 00:58:19.599
Yeah.
00:58:19.760 --> 00:58:20.079
Yeah.
00:58:20.320 --> 00:58:21.280
Especially in Texas.
00:58:21.360 --> 00:58:21.679
You don't know.
00:58:22.000 --> 00:58:24.000
And you kind of like hide in the bushes.
00:58:24.800 --> 00:58:26.800
It's all before ring footage.
00:58:26.960 --> 00:58:29.280
Yeah, that's a kind of change things, didn't it?
00:58:29.440 --> 00:58:29.760
Yeah.
00:58:30.000 --> 00:58:30.639
Yeah.
00:58:31.039 --> 00:58:36.960
We were doorbell ditched once by some local kids when we lived in in Salemore again.
00:58:37.039 --> 00:58:38.079
But haven't seen as much of it.
00:58:38.719 --> 00:58:39.280
We were.
00:58:39.440 --> 00:58:39.760
Yeah.
00:58:39.920 --> 00:58:40.800
That's really funny.
00:58:40.960 --> 00:58:43.280
I was just like, have your fun, little kiddos.
00:58:43.519 --> 00:58:44.159
Have your fun.
00:58:44.400 --> 00:58:45.760
I really love this story.
00:58:45.840 --> 00:58:50.079
I think it's such a touchstone for the entire rest of this series.
00:58:50.320 --> 00:58:55.679
And it's just such a good, succinct image of who Tom is.
00:58:56.000 --> 00:58:57.280
All show no go.
00:58:57.360 --> 00:58:57.840
Mm-hmm.
00:58:58.559 --> 00:59:05.840
Just then a drenched Shep Clark stumbles into the bar and collapses onto the ground.
00:59:06.079 --> 00:59:07.119
He's been found.
00:59:07.280 --> 00:59:12.000
And we cut to the hospital where the doctor says that Shep has been sedated after his fall.
00:59:12.159 --> 00:59:13.599
He's in stable condition.
00:59:13.679 --> 00:59:18.639
Uh, but they're gonna keep him under to let the swelling in his head go down, and they'll know more in the morning.
00:59:19.280 --> 00:59:25.119
We cut to Patricia, who's keeping Shep company in his hospital room, and she's talking to him.
00:59:25.199 --> 00:59:29.840
And I think when Tom enters, she's like, you know, I've heard that it helps if you talk to them.
00:59:30.000 --> 00:59:33.119
And Tom's like, uh, I think that's for comas.
00:59:35.039 --> 00:59:37.920
He can't stop offending poor Patricia.
00:59:38.079 --> 00:59:42.639
I know, and Patricia is like the only one that like really has Tom's back.
00:59:42.960 --> 00:59:44.079
I know, it's insulting.
00:59:44.400 --> 00:59:51.679
Yeah, like she's pretty much as type A as he is, and just like eager to please, yeah, poor Patricia.
00:59:51.840 --> 00:59:55.599
It's a combination two of her being overly sensitive and him being overly callous.
00:59:55.760 --> 00:59:56.719
It's not a good combo.
00:59:57.199 --> 00:59:58.000
She's like, you know what?
00:59:58.079 --> 01:00:00.400
Fine, I'm gonna go back to my office where I can't bother anyone.
01:00:00.480 --> 01:00:02.400
And she leaves Tom alone with Shep.
01:00:02.559 --> 01:00:09.519
He takes this is a sure sign that this is a very old-fashioned island because Shep has a paper chart on his bed.
01:00:10.000 --> 01:00:13.599
And like this detail that the chart says that Shep is 37.
01:00:13.679 --> 01:00:16.800
This man is clearly like in his like late 60s at least.
01:00:17.119 --> 01:00:19.119
Just like that doesn't seem right.
01:00:19.440 --> 01:00:28.320
And then he scans down to the alcohol report and finds to his surprise that Shep was completely sober.
01:00:28.480 --> 01:00:30.880
Uh, there is nearly a drop of alcohol in him.
01:00:31.119 --> 01:00:42.880
And it's this really cool shot where he's like leaning over to read the chart, and we see his eyes closed in the background, and then he like leans up and then like leans over again, and then we get the white eyes.
01:00:43.280 --> 01:00:44.079
And Shepp's, yeah.
01:00:44.400 --> 01:00:46.000
She's yes.
01:00:46.239 --> 01:01:00.239
So Shep begins to mumble, and Tom leans and closed to try to hear what he's saying, only for Shep to open his pure white eyes again, and he grabs Tom by the neck and begins to choke him and he wrestles him to the ground.
01:01:00.480 --> 01:01:06.159
You and I were talking about this because you said, like, I don't know why we wouldn't just be screaming for help in a hospital.
01:01:06.320 --> 01:01:12.159
And I think it's an indication of how desperate Tom is that even when he's being attacked by a zombie.
01:01:12.239 --> 01:01:21.519
I mean, we see this dynamic again and again through the series that even when he's being attacked by a zombie, he's not willing to let anybody in on the fact that paranormal things are happening in the tale.
01:01:21.599 --> 01:01:23.119
And like he will just go down with that ship.
01:01:23.199 --> 01:01:25.119
He's like, We'll go down with that ship.
01:01:26.000 --> 01:01:28.480
Yeah, no, he's just like, and everything's fine here.
01:01:28.639 --> 01:01:29.679
Everything's fine.
01:01:30.480 --> 01:01:48.880
Um, luckily, Shep runs out of juice before he can do any permanent damage to Tom, and the hospital staff runs into the room, and the doctor begins chest compressions, and we get this really fun shot of this panning up to and zooming in on an absolutely horrified Tom.
01:01:49.119 --> 01:01:53.280
You know, I'm beginning to think that maybe, maybe Wick was right about something.
01:01:53.519 --> 01:02:09.679
We cut to Tom in his office where he's pulled up a Doppler radar screen, and he's watching this massive weather system approaching the island, and the doctor calls to tell him that Shep's autopsy won't be conducted until the next day.
01:02:09.920 --> 01:02:14.000
And Tom, you can tell he's really trying to choose his words carefully.
01:02:14.239 --> 01:02:21.760
Uh, but he says, you know, like when I saw Shep before that all went down, like something didn't really feel right.
01:02:22.079 --> 01:02:25.920
And he asks if the doctor noticed anything out of the ordinary.
01:02:26.159 --> 01:02:31.840
But before he can reply, Patricia burst into the room telling Tom that he's late for his dinner with Arthur.
01:02:32.000 --> 01:02:34.320
And Tom seems really hesitant to go.
01:02:34.559 --> 01:02:38.559
He kind of like fiddles about, he's still glancing at the Doppler Raider.
01:02:38.719 --> 01:02:47.440
We can see that he's he's maybe considering the fact that something might, in fact, be going on that is nefarious and paranormal.
01:02:48.239 --> 01:02:54.239
Uh, but Tom tells Patricia that they, you know what, they can't let the superstitious folks on the island get in their heads, you know.
01:02:54.320 --> 01:02:55.440
You can't let fear win.
01:02:55.519 --> 01:02:57.360
It's very clear this is a speech for himself.
01:02:57.519 --> 01:02:57.920
Yes.
01:02:58.159 --> 01:03:04.000
I really love Cato Flynn's delivery of her line where she says she knows that.
01:03:04.639 --> 01:03:09.840
You can see all the years of final girl trauma in her eyes.
01:03:10.079 --> 01:03:12.800
Like Patricia knows this much more than Tom does.
01:03:13.679 --> 01:03:19.039
And we cut to Tom at his dinner with Arthur, and he is just completely spaced out.
01:03:19.440 --> 01:03:26.239
I will try to keep my waxing, just effusive praise for the writing of this series to a minimum.
01:03:26.480 --> 01:03:46.400
But I do really love how every single episode has its own tightly contained arc because we have seen over the course at this point of maybe half an hour Tom go from doubling down on his pragmatic view of the island to being completely traumatized by the island.
01:03:46.719 --> 01:03:47.119
Yes.
01:03:47.360 --> 01:03:51.679
And his motivation this whole time has been to impress Arthur, and now he's like a shell of a man.
01:03:51.840 --> 01:03:57.119
And like if it were just up to his impression, he would be fucking up this entire travel writer's experience.
01:03:57.519 --> 01:04:03.760
And like almost every episode, it feels like it starts over where he's like, no, no, no, I'm being silly, and then like stuff keeps happening.
01:04:04.000 --> 01:04:04.639
Yes.
01:04:04.960 --> 01:04:12.719
I love I love this ongoing bit, it's such a tiny little bit, but there's clearly the most incompetent waitress imaginable at this place named Kathy.
01:04:13.199 --> 01:04:16.320
It it's it feels so accurate to like a small town.
01:04:16.480 --> 01:04:21.360
They're like, probably everyone just like is wishing Kathy would just pass on, you know.
01:04:22.320 --> 01:04:27.119
They're like, maybe we'll get someone who isn't incompetent to pack our lunches.
01:04:27.360 --> 01:04:28.480
And yes.
01:04:28.719 --> 01:04:35.360
Because we heard at the beginning Tom specifically asked Wayne not to put Kathy at their table, but she is there and just pouring water into his liquor glass.
01:04:35.599 --> 01:04:37.679
He's like, It's not water.
01:04:39.280 --> 01:04:51.760
Arthur surprises Tom by telling him that he loves the island and he doesn't understand why it's not Martha's vineyard, and suddenly it's like something breaks through to Tom.
01:04:51.920 --> 01:04:56.880
He's like, he lets out the most ridiculous laugh of excitement.
01:04:57.039 --> 01:04:58.639
I don't know if you could even call it a laugh.
01:04:58.719 --> 01:05:00.559
It's like an explosion of some kind.
01:05:00.800 --> 01:05:02.000
It's so funny.
01:05:02.159 --> 01:05:04.239
He's so fucking funny.
01:05:04.400 --> 01:05:07.199
Uh, and he's clearly on cloud nine.
01:05:07.280 --> 01:05:08.880
This is everything he wanted to hear.
01:05:09.039 --> 01:05:10.480
It's finally all happening.
01:05:10.639 --> 01:05:20.400
I do appreciate too that there seems to be this kind of unspoken hierarchy of tourist island towns, at least in Tom's mind, because you know, he was just aiming for Bar Harbor.
01:05:20.480 --> 01:05:23.679
You know, he never thought they would be compared to Martha's Vineyard.
01:05:23.760 --> 01:05:26.639
Uh I wonder where Cape Cod fits into this hierarchy.
01:05:26.960 --> 01:05:28.159
Fuck Cape Cod.
01:05:28.960 --> 01:05:41.760
Uh, but it's not all good news from Arthur because he says that he's heard from some folks on the island that there's a widely held belief that if you're born on the island, you can never leave.
01:05:42.000 --> 01:05:49.199
He spoke to this older man who claims that he has never once left the island, to which I say I don't think that's that unusual.
01:05:49.599 --> 01:05:54.079
I think there's plenty of islands and even small towns where people just don't leave the town think about them.
01:05:54.559 --> 01:05:59.760
But of note is the fact that this man had a cousin who went to the mainland and died of a heart attack when.
01:06:00.159 --> 01:06:00.719
A month later.
01:06:00.800 --> 01:06:06.880
And there was another woman who reportedly died of a stroke a day after she set foot on the mainland.
01:06:07.119 --> 01:06:12.480
And Arthur, like the good journalist he is, checked out these stories and they're all true.
01:06:12.800 --> 01:06:15.760
Tom insists that that is just an old wife's tale.
01:06:16.000 --> 01:06:18.159
He goes to the mainland all the time.
01:06:18.320 --> 01:06:24.320
And then Arthur, like a good reporter, asks the hard-heading question Were you born here though?
01:06:24.559 --> 01:06:27.440
And uh Tom begrudgingly admits that he wasn't.
01:06:27.920 --> 01:06:34.800
Uh, but his son was born and raised on Widows Bay, and he insists that he has been to the mainland too plenty of times.
01:06:35.679 --> 01:06:36.079
Lies?
01:06:36.480 --> 01:06:36.960
Liar.
01:06:37.760 --> 01:06:42.559
Yeah, there's a look in Tom's eyes that indicates that, you know, he might not actually be telling the truth.
01:06:42.800 --> 01:06:43.920
Arthur laughs it off though.
01:06:44.000 --> 01:06:48.960
He's like, you know, obviously it's a superstition, it's not true, but it is fascinating that people believe it.
01:06:49.440 --> 01:06:53.280
And he then tells Tom what he has been longing to hear.
01:06:53.519 --> 01:06:58.400
He thinks that Widow Bay summer tourism season could be huge.
01:06:59.039 --> 01:07:09.039
But we've gone back to Tom not being able to enjoy the moment because he's looking out the window and there's a heavy fog rolling into the island.
01:07:09.519 --> 01:07:16.719
Uh so in a panic, he jumps up and says he has to make a phone call, and we cut to him checking on Evan.
01:07:16.880 --> 01:07:19.199
He's worried that he's out again with his friends.
01:07:19.360 --> 01:07:23.360
But before he can get a clear answer, the power goes out in the restaurant.
01:07:23.599 --> 01:07:30.239
And Tom, who is being whipped up into a frenzy, announces to the restaurant patrons that, you know, they should just all stay put.
01:07:30.320 --> 01:07:34.239
You know, it's not safe to drive in the fog, especially after you've had a few.
01:07:34.559 --> 01:07:38.320
Wayne tries to push past them and is like, look, I'm just gonna go check on the breakers.
01:07:38.400 --> 01:07:50.400
But Tom tries to bar his path, and things get tenser and tenser until one of the patrons has to throw Tom to the ground to get to the door, and Tom screams, There's something in the fog.
01:07:51.599 --> 01:07:55.280
And in that moment, the lights come back on.
01:07:55.599 --> 01:07:56.400
Oh, Tom.
01:07:56.960 --> 01:07:58.880
Uh, there's nothing in the fog, it seems.
01:07:59.039 --> 01:08:02.000
In fact, it's lifting, and everything is fine.
01:08:02.320 --> 01:08:06.800
Tom's made a fool of himself in front of everyone, including Arthur.
01:08:07.199 --> 01:08:12.000
And Arthur tells him, you know, okay, like I see what you're trying to do.
01:08:12.159 --> 01:08:15.039
You don't want to be Nantucket, you want to be Salem.
01:08:15.440 --> 01:08:22.319
And as he leaves the restaurant, he tells Tom that it's already a nice town and he doesn't need the spooky gimmick.
01:08:22.640 --> 01:08:32.479
I mean, I just feel like if I was Tom and like tourism was the the biggest motivating factor here, I would just be like, yeah, it's haunted.
01:08:32.560 --> 01:08:33.359
It's like Salem.
01:08:33.439 --> 01:08:39.119
Because I I Salem during the spooky months is is wild.
01:08:39.359 --> 01:08:40.720
People spend so much money.
01:08:40.960 --> 01:08:42.000
Yeah, why not?
01:08:42.159 --> 01:08:42.560
Why not?
01:08:42.720 --> 01:08:44.479
Get your tourism in the summer and the fall.
01:08:45.520 --> 01:08:52.239
So time passes and Tom remains spaced out at his table in what is now an empty restaurant.
01:08:52.560 --> 01:09:02.479
And Wayne, who's clearly irritated, he didn't even want to keep the place open, tells him that he can lock up, turns out the light, and Tom heads for the bathroom.
01:09:02.720 --> 01:09:06.079
Where we see a shadowy figure behind him.
01:09:06.640 --> 01:09:14.399
And a hand reaches out and touches his shoulder, and it's revealed to be Kathy, the terrible waitress.
01:09:14.560 --> 01:09:17.520
And she hands him a check, which is naturally incorrect.
01:09:17.760 --> 01:09:21.680
She's like, she's the true whore getting charged for things you didn't work in.
01:09:22.239 --> 01:09:28.399
So Tom heads to the bathroom, and as he's washing his hands, he I this is a relatable moment.
01:09:28.560 --> 01:09:36.880
Who among us has not excused themselves to the bathroom after embarrassing themselves and then just repeated the terrible, stupid thing that you said, which is there's something in the fog.
01:09:37.840 --> 01:09:46.560
Except that's like follows me home at night, and then I replay it over and over and over at two o'clock in the morning, going, so fucking stupid.
01:09:46.640 --> 01:09:47.359
I can't believe I said that.
01:09:47.680 --> 01:09:48.960
Still things from high school, I think about.
01:09:49.119 --> 01:09:49.279
Yeah.
01:09:49.439 --> 01:09:49.680
Yeah.
01:09:49.840 --> 01:09:50.319
Yeah.
01:09:50.720 --> 01:09:53.680
There are there are moments that will just never leave me.
01:09:55.359 --> 01:10:00.159
A dejected Tom heads out of the bathroom, but we don't follow Tom.
01:10:00.319 --> 01:10:09.840
Instead, the camera pans down, down beneath the earth to a frightening-looking underground room.
01:10:09.920 --> 01:10:18.960
And we zoom in on an old chair with straps on the armrests and a horrifying looking metal contraption over where the head should be.
01:10:19.119 --> 01:10:22.880
It looks like some kind of torture device or worse.
01:10:23.119 --> 01:10:27.840
And it's facing a set of rusty old cellar doors.
01:10:29.119 --> 01:10:30.960
And then we cut to the end credits.
01:10:31.680 --> 01:10:35.119
This is the moment where I was like, it's a little lost.
01:10:35.840 --> 01:10:43.439
It felt very much like, oh, just in its best moments of like the hatch, and then like something's happening on the island.
01:10:43.920 --> 01:10:44.319
Yeah.
01:10:44.560 --> 01:10:45.600
Yes, yes.
01:10:45.840 --> 01:10:58.399
Welcome to Widows Baby! So I thought it could be fun at the end of every episode to name what we think were the horror references sprinkled throughout, and then also pull our audience.
01:10:58.479 --> 01:11:02.000
We would love to hear from you all if you spot horror references that we missed.
01:11:02.159 --> 01:11:10.000
So in this first episode, there's not as many as in subsequent ones, but I think we definitely get a lot of nods to Jaws.
01:11:10.640 --> 01:11:11.439
Obviously.
01:11:11.760 --> 01:11:14.720
And a very clear reference to the mist.
01:11:15.199 --> 01:11:21.439
Yeah, I almost feel like in every episode there's gonna be a Stephen King reference.
01:11:21.680 --> 01:11:26.560
Yeah, many, many, like very clearly lots of homages to Stephen King.
01:11:26.720 --> 01:11:37.039
And as we'll see from here on out, every episode until the finale uh starts to really ramp up is kind of its own self-contained piece of lore.
01:11:38.000 --> 01:11:46.079
And on that note, why don't we get into the first piece of lore that is explored, which is the idea of a haunted hotel?
01:11:46.399 --> 01:11:47.039
I love it.
01:11:47.199 --> 01:11:49.119
In the episode lodging.
01:11:49.840 --> 01:12:01.199
We open on various views of Widow's Bay at night, and we get a view of the church as its bell begins to toll.
01:12:01.520 --> 01:12:04.159
There are nine clings in total.
01:12:04.960 --> 01:12:05.600
Significant?
01:12:06.159 --> 01:12:06.800
We don't know.
01:12:07.279 --> 01:12:11.119
In fact, this felt like such a benign thing happening.
01:12:11.199 --> 01:12:13.199
I didn't clock it at first.
01:12:13.520 --> 01:12:13.760
Yeah.
01:12:13.920 --> 01:12:15.840
I was just like, oh, well, the church bell's ringing.
01:12:16.000 --> 01:12:19.760
Uh but we're about to find out that maybe this wasn't a very normal church bell ring.
01:12:20.079 --> 01:12:23.199
It immediately made me want to watch Midnight Mass.
01:12:24.079 --> 01:12:26.560
A very good companion to Widows Bay.
01:12:26.880 --> 01:12:30.880
Uh, if you want the spooky island vibes and not the humor.
01:12:31.760 --> 01:12:32.399
Yes.
01:12:32.720 --> 01:12:35.119
Same actor in part of this show.
01:12:35.439 --> 01:12:36.239
Yes, yes.
01:12:36.319 --> 01:12:37.840
We do have a little crossover.
01:12:38.479 --> 01:12:44.079
Um, but we cut to daytime, and Tom is driving his car with Patricia on the passenger seat.
01:12:44.159 --> 01:12:48.800
There's a box stuffed with Widow's Bay tourism brochures in the back.
01:12:48.960 --> 01:12:51.119
And these are very fancy brochures.
01:12:51.199 --> 01:12:54.159
I would even say they're a step above brochures.
01:12:54.239 --> 01:12:56.079
They're like a full little travel booklet.
01:12:56.560 --> 01:13:00.000
Uh and Patricia is flipping through one, and she's very impressed, like I am.
01:13:00.159 --> 01:13:04.319
But there's something wrong because they didn't include her poem.
01:13:05.920 --> 01:13:06.880
It got me.
01:13:07.039 --> 01:13:08.880
This is why this part got me.
01:13:09.439 --> 01:13:11.520
And Tom's like, oh no, no.
01:13:11.760 --> 01:13:15.439
It's like in his best Willy Wonka voice, but like, stop, don't come back.
01:13:15.680 --> 01:13:16.159
Oh no.
01:13:16.399 --> 01:13:18.000
Oh, oh no.
01:13:18.479 --> 01:13:19.520
Poor Patricia.
01:13:19.760 --> 01:13:20.319
I know.
01:13:20.479 --> 01:13:31.840
I really love the way this is written, where we get just little sprinkles of who Patricia is, especially before she has her own episode that she is writing poems and making paintings.
01:13:32.079 --> 01:13:34.640
No one on this island really seems to appreciate her.
01:13:34.960 --> 01:13:37.279
But we appreciate you, Patricia.
01:13:37.520 --> 01:13:40.479
Like if one person should appreciate Patricia, it's Tom.
01:13:40.640 --> 01:13:41.520
Come on, Tom.
01:13:41.680 --> 01:13:42.159
Come on.
01:13:42.560 --> 01:13:44.000
Ain't that just the way?
01:13:44.319 --> 01:13:46.239
Do we think Patricia loves Tom?
01:13:46.720 --> 01:13:48.720
Oh, oh, that's interesting.
01:13:48.960 --> 01:13:50.399
Oh, I I always assume Patricia.
01:13:50.800 --> 01:13:51.840
Oh, you think she does?
01:13:52.159 --> 01:13:52.720
Huh.
01:13:53.199 --> 01:13:58.079
I I think that there's the potential for Patricia falling in love with Tom.
01:13:58.479 --> 01:13:59.520
I don't know.
01:14:00.079 --> 01:14:02.079
An infatuation in some form.
01:14:02.960 --> 01:14:03.039
Yes.
01:14:04.319 --> 01:14:08.800
I don't know if it's like I think she has an unexamined crush on Tom.
01:14:09.359 --> 01:14:18.960
Like it doesn't really seem overt, but it's a really interesting dynamic where I think they both recognize in each other that they're kind of each other's best outlet.
01:14:19.199 --> 01:14:27.439
Slash, like, because I think Patricia has more common sense and less superstition than most of the people on the island.
01:14:27.680 --> 01:14:29.199
So Tom appreciates that in her.
01:14:29.279 --> 01:14:35.039
And she actually seems competent and gets stuff done, which is the highest level of respect from Tom.
01:14:35.520 --> 01:14:40.159
And she probably has like a crush that she hasn't fully thought through.
01:14:40.479 --> 01:14:48.960
Yeah, I just think there's such a pure earnestness about Patricia that I relate with and love very much.
01:14:49.920 --> 01:14:50.960
Very much so.
01:14:51.199 --> 01:14:52.880
And we always love a black sheep.
01:14:53.199 --> 01:14:54.720
We'll find out in her episode.
01:14:55.039 --> 01:14:58.640
A little ostracized baba or thing.
01:14:59.199 --> 01:15:03.520
So uh Tom asked Patricia to read it again.
01:15:03.840 --> 01:15:05.680
Wait, why did I not just understand?
01:15:06.159 --> 01:15:06.479
Baba.
01:15:06.960 --> 01:15:07.279
Baba.
01:15:07.760 --> 01:15:09.279
Like a baby, but a baba.
01:15:09.600 --> 01:15:09.840
A baba.
01:15:10.319 --> 01:15:10.960
A black sheep.
01:15:11.279 --> 01:15:11.920
No, thank you.
01:15:12.079 --> 01:15:12.800
Thank you, Allie.
01:15:13.039 --> 01:15:14.560
I just have to give credit where credit's too.
01:15:14.800 --> 01:15:16.319
But that was a really cute joke.
01:15:17.119 --> 01:15:17.760
You're so cute.
01:15:19.439 --> 01:15:20.560
Um I'm turning red.
01:15:21.199 --> 01:15:21.520
Okay.
01:15:25.600 --> 01:15:27.920
But it's clear that Tom doesn't want her to read the brochure.
01:15:28.399 --> 01:15:31.760
He wants her to read the New York Times piece that Arthur wrote.
01:15:32.000 --> 01:15:36.960
So I'm guessing because Tom mentions later that some tourists are coming out of town.
01:15:37.039 --> 01:15:43.359
So it seems like there's been like a few months, at least like a month's time lapse, possibly.
01:15:43.680 --> 01:15:52.720
And we see that Arthur Lloyd did, in fact, write a glowing review about Widows Bay titled New England's Best Kept Secret.
01:15:53.199 --> 01:16:00.640
And he asks Patricia to read the Widow's Bay is Martha's Vineyard comment, which is literally just Widows Bay is the next Martha's Vineyard.
01:16:00.960 --> 01:16:02.159
He's really getting off on it.
01:16:02.319 --> 01:16:02.640
Yeah.
01:16:02.880 --> 01:16:08.640
I said six to midnight, just immediately basking in the glory of that poll quote.
01:16:08.880 --> 01:16:18.720
And we kind of have a Patricia visiting what seems to be a new and improved coffee shop on the island where the barista has invested in an espresso machine.
01:16:18.960 --> 01:16:24.159
And Tom takes a step and says that this is what the island should taste like.
01:16:24.640 --> 01:16:30.640
But the barista replies that there's one problem, and that is that no one is ordering the new fancy coffee.
01:16:30.880 --> 01:16:32.479
I guess they're all just doing drip, huh?
01:16:32.640 --> 01:16:33.680
Oh, drip, 100%.
01:16:34.079 --> 01:16:36.000
These are these are seafearing men.
01:16:36.159 --> 01:16:38.159
They are not, they do not have time for an espresso.
01:16:38.560 --> 01:16:40.640
No, none of that European nonsense.
01:16:40.880 --> 01:16:49.279
Uh but Tom assures him that the tourist are coming that weekend, and soon he's going to be inundated with espresso-loving customers.
01:16:49.520 --> 01:17:13.119
So just then uh we hear a police siren, and Tom goes to investigate what the commotion is all about, and we cut to the talent's local place of lodging, Breakwater Inn, where a drunken wick is manically nailing a board across the inn's front door, and he's confronted by the inn's owner, Kurt, who tells him uh that this place is his livelihood.
01:17:13.279 --> 01:17:19.520
Kurt explains to Tom and Sheriff Bashir that he got the inn ready for this new influx of tourists.
01:17:19.600 --> 01:17:31.520
They're fully booked, and Tom, sensing impending peril, attempts to intervene, but Wick insists that people cannot stay at the end because it is not right.
01:17:32.800 --> 01:17:34.000
A very drunk whip.
01:17:34.239 --> 01:17:35.199
Yes, yes.
01:17:35.840 --> 01:17:44.880
And Kurt attempts to wrest the hammer out of Wick's hand, but then he like ends up setting him toppling down the end stairs and simultaneously rolling the stairs.
01:17:45.199 --> 01:17:47.840
It's simultaneously like so sad and so funny.
01:17:48.000 --> 01:17:48.800
Oh, it's so funny.
01:17:49.039 --> 01:17:50.319
Not a good look, Kurt.
01:17:50.479 --> 01:17:57.439
Bashir begins to usher Wick away, but he keeps insisting that the inn is haunted and Tom is a fool.
01:17:57.600 --> 01:18:00.640
He's a selfish man, he's gonna get them all killed.
01:18:00.880 --> 01:18:07.039
And the islanders all kind of seem to be on Wick's side here, and it seems to be over.
01:18:07.199 --> 01:18:14.000
He's he's put inside the back of the cop car, but then he rolls down his window to continue his range.
01:18:14.479 --> 01:18:16.880
Tom's like, why is he able to do that?
01:18:17.039 --> 01:18:18.479
He's like, he's not cuffed Tom.
01:18:18.960 --> 01:18:21.920
Like you would think they would have a lock on the window.
01:18:22.239 --> 01:18:23.359
It's hysterical.
01:18:23.600 --> 01:18:28.319
But Wick points out that Tom has never even set foot inside the inn.
01:18:28.560 --> 01:18:33.840
And I really feel like it's a nice callback to young Tom's doorbell ditching.
01:18:34.560 --> 01:18:41.279
He seems very resistant to any of the lore, but then he's also way too scared to actually investigate it for himself.
01:18:41.520 --> 01:18:51.039
And he insists that Tom is not one of them, he's a coward, and Tom finally seems to reach a breaking point and shouts at Wick, fuck you, you dumb hick.
01:18:51.279 --> 01:18:52.399
Also not a good look.
01:18:52.640 --> 01:19:00.640
No, you can tell everybody that's in the town is like horrified by his treatment of Wick, but also it's an insult to them.
01:19:01.039 --> 01:19:01.279
Yeah.
01:19:01.680 --> 01:19:05.840
He's the only, he's one of the only people who, you know, wasn't born on the island.
01:19:06.159 --> 01:19:07.680
That's right, he's an outsider.
01:19:08.479 --> 01:19:12.560
And yeah, if the onlookers weren't already on Wick's side, they definitely are now.
01:19:12.640 --> 01:19:16.399
They'll give Tom the old evil eye and slowly disperse.
01:19:16.800 --> 01:19:20.880
And Tom tries to backtrack, but it is too late.
01:19:21.119 --> 01:19:28.000
And meanwhile, we get a cut of Kurt opening the door to the end, and he just He just hammered it into the door, but not the door frame.
01:19:28.239 --> 01:19:29.920
So the door just opens immediately.
01:19:30.159 --> 01:19:42.000
Uh so we cut to the Salty Whale, where Tom heads to the bar for a pickup order, and while he's waiting on the food, he is approached by the town priest, Reverend Bryce.
01:19:42.079 --> 01:19:45.760
And Tom tells Bryce that no one appreciates anything he does.
01:19:45.920 --> 01:19:52.399
You know, he worked his ass off to get that article in the Times, and the town hasn't shown him a smudgeon of gratitude.
01:19:52.560 --> 01:19:57.119
And meanwhile, Wick gets to do whatever he wants, and people love him.
01:19:57.439 --> 01:20:03.760
They do such a good job of portraying Tom as simultaneously unsympathetic and deeply sympathetic.
01:20:03.920 --> 01:20:11.359
You know, he is a dick, he is an asshole, is typey, is like too much, but at the same time, you can understand what a frustrating position he is in.
01:20:11.520 --> 01:20:20.319
Where just by virtue of not being born on the town, he's never gonna command the same respect from the citizens as someone like Wick does, even when he's causing a drunken commotion.
01:20:20.560 --> 01:20:22.640
Well, yeah, and it's like Wick was born here.
01:20:23.439 --> 01:20:25.279
Wick, you know, is one of them.
01:20:25.520 --> 01:20:27.119
Yes, maybe you should listen to Wick too.
01:20:27.760 --> 01:20:31.840
Uh Bryce says, you know, Wick hasn't had the easiest time.
01:20:32.239 --> 01:20:39.119
And he also points out that everyone on the island fears change, and then he offers a little Bible humor, which I appreciate.
01:20:39.760 --> 01:20:46.560
Pokes a little fun out of himself and doles out platitudes, and then he asks if Tom wants to come by for a drink.
01:20:46.720 --> 01:20:50.800
But Tom says, no, he's bringing home food to Evan, but maybe another time.
01:20:51.119 --> 01:20:59.199
I do love that the priest just has like his religious garb with a Columbia jacket over the top, which is just I love.
01:20:59.359 --> 01:21:00.239
I love this visual.
01:21:00.640 --> 01:21:01.920
It's giving coastal priest.
01:21:02.079 --> 01:21:04.159
Maybe that's gonna be the next trend after coastal grandma.
01:21:04.319 --> 01:21:06.880
Vern wears a little clerical collar with a Columbia fleece.
01:21:07.039 --> 01:21:07.760
I'm down.
01:21:07.920 --> 01:21:14.720
Um, I also want this winter to be sweater, like I want to be sweater girl.
01:21:15.039 --> 01:21:17.119
I want to, but like main sweaters.
01:21:17.359 --> 01:21:17.840
You know what I mean?
01:21:18.159 --> 01:21:20.399
Just a coastal grandma, but a coastal fisherman.
01:21:20.640 --> 01:21:21.119
Yeah, yeah.
01:21:21.680 --> 01:21:22.079
Yeah, yeah.
01:21:22.239 --> 01:21:24.720
Well, we might get at Ellie with this like super El Nino.
01:21:24.960 --> 01:21:29.199
I think they said the South is supposed to have a way colder winter, so we might actually have an opportunity.
01:21:29.520 --> 01:21:30.720
High of just 80.
01:21:30.960 --> 01:21:32.159
High of just 80.
01:21:32.319 --> 01:21:32.560
I know.
01:21:32.960 --> 01:21:38.720
Allie and I are so stoked because we might, it was 96 degrees yesterday.
01:21:38.880 --> 01:21:39.920
We're at the end of September.
01:21:40.000 --> 01:21:41.840
So angry about it.
01:21:42.000 --> 01:21:44.319
We might get down to a high of 80.
01:21:44.560 --> 01:21:46.159
Absolutely ecstatic about that.
01:21:46.319 --> 01:21:53.039
It's like the outside looking out our window, it's giving fall because there's dead leaves on the ground.
01:21:53.119 --> 01:21:56.319
And so you look out and then you walk out and you're like, Satan's asshole.
01:21:56.560 --> 01:21:58.000
Like it is just terrible.
01:21:58.319 --> 01:21:59.520
Hot and humid, baby.
01:22:01.760 --> 01:22:07.520
Just as Bryce is leaving, Tom tells him that he should keep the church doors locked at night.
01:22:07.600 --> 01:22:16.560
He says, you know, it's probably Evan and his friends who snuck in and ring the church bell the other night by Tom attempting to intervene, as they both know, won't won't really do any good.
01:22:16.800 --> 01:22:18.479
Evan just does not listen to him.
01:22:18.800 --> 01:22:26.319
Bryce seems unsettled though, even more so when Tom mentions that both Rosemary and Patricia also heard the bell ringing.
01:22:26.560 --> 01:22:28.880
He says, that's impossible.
01:22:29.199 --> 01:22:34.319
And Tom not sensing the vibe shift just jokes, oh well, clearly we haven't met Evan.
01:22:34.960 --> 01:22:36.479
Uh Bryce isn't smiling.
01:22:36.560 --> 01:22:38.960
He heads out and he's he's still looking rattled.
01:22:39.359 --> 01:22:47.840
And meanwhile, Tom gets his to-go order and he's just leaving the salty whale when one of the patrons shouts after him, Dumb heck.
01:22:48.000 --> 01:22:53.199
And Tom backtracks and approaches a table where two local men are sitting.
01:22:53.439 --> 01:22:55.359
He tells them he didn't really mean that.
01:22:55.520 --> 01:23:02.159
He knows they're loyal to Wick, but you know, that doesn't make Wick right about everything, and there's nothing wrong with the inn.
01:23:02.560 --> 01:23:17.199
This is a point where it's such a small town vibe where like all the local patrons are gathered around and shouting out comments, and so a nearby man says, you know, a lot of bad things have happened in that inn, and Tom concedes, you know what, that is true, but that doesn't make it haunted.
01:23:17.359 --> 01:23:20.399
And then one of them challenges Tom to stay there.
01:23:20.560 --> 01:23:22.800
And at first Tom is trying to evade the dare.
01:23:22.880 --> 01:23:24.479
He's like, Oh, well, are you gonna pay for my room?
01:23:24.560 --> 01:23:25.600
And they're like, Yeah, you know what?
01:23:25.680 --> 01:23:26.560
We'll call your bluff.
01:23:26.640 --> 01:23:27.199
We will, we will.
01:23:27.279 --> 01:23:30.960
We'll all chip in, we'll pay for you to stay, and you're gonna stay tonight.
01:23:31.680 --> 01:23:39.199
And then we get the kiss of death because someone in the restaurant starts making the old bokbak and coward noise, and there's no backing out now.
01:23:39.520 --> 01:23:49.680
I think he's realizing everyone thinks he's like a chicken and like the call back to the doorbell ditch, like it's all the stuff, and he's like, it's a real sensitive spot right now, you know.
01:23:50.000 --> 01:23:51.119
Yes, yes.
01:23:51.359 --> 01:23:57.920
At this point, like everyone in the restaurant is throwing out ideas and suggestions about Tom's night at the end.
01:23:58.079 --> 01:24:04.399
So one says that he has to stay in the captain's suite because that's the one who lost his mind and killed his family with an axe.
01:24:04.640 --> 01:24:06.319
A very clear shining reference.
01:24:06.880 --> 01:24:16.479
Another diner says that he has to be on the lookout for the ungrateful Hordons, uh, Fitzgerald, an ugly woman who fled her wedding and backed out of a window to her death.
01:24:16.640 --> 01:24:21.760
If you say ugly Hordons three times, you'll see her ungrateful reflection.
01:24:22.239 --> 01:24:23.119
Ungrateful reflection.
01:24:23.359 --> 01:24:25.600
Ungrateful because someone wanted to marry an ugly woman.
01:24:27.359 --> 01:24:30.159
And it was so funny because I was making a note.
01:24:30.239 --> 01:24:35.680
I was watching this in real time and pausing, and I was beginning to just make my own personal note about like the misogyny.
01:24:35.920 --> 01:24:42.880
But Tom himself says, you know, I think maybe we should like reevaluate these narratives because uh there's a little misogyny in the air.
01:24:42.960 --> 01:24:43.279
Yeah.
01:24:43.840 --> 01:24:44.800
More than a whiff.
01:24:44.960 --> 01:24:46.159
More than a whiff.
01:24:46.560 --> 01:24:49.279
At this point, the patrons are throwing out ghost stories.
01:24:49.359 --> 01:24:56.560
There's the 1962 New Year's Eve disaster, John Reynolds head and the dumb waiter, the clown killer of 1951.
01:24:56.720 --> 01:25:05.760
And then we find out that Rosemary is at the bar and says that he should spend time in the crawl space all the way in the back, not halfway.
01:25:06.640 --> 01:25:11.279
And another diner taunts him saying, you know, he's not actually gonna spend the whole night there.
01:25:11.359 --> 01:25:16.239
Uh but rosemary pipes up with a helpful suggestion and says, you know, Kirk could just lock him inside all night.
01:25:16.399 --> 01:25:18.319
It's like Tom's like, thank you.
01:25:18.479 --> 01:25:19.119
Thank you, Rosemary.
01:25:20.800 --> 01:25:23.279
Uh but Tom rises to the challenge.
01:25:23.439 --> 01:25:24.640
He says he'll do it.
01:25:24.880 --> 01:25:31.840
And once he spent his night in the end, all this talk of haunting stops, and they let the tourists stay there in peace.
01:25:32.000 --> 01:25:33.840
So the locals agree to Tom's terms.
01:25:34.000 --> 01:25:39.760
But as he's leaving, a man at one of the tables clears his throat and he says in a low voice, Don't do it.
01:25:42.000 --> 01:25:45.840
So Tom uh uneasily leaves the salty whale.
01:25:46.479 --> 01:26:00.880
We cut to the church then where Reverend Bryce is going to investigate the bell tower and reveals that the door to the tower has been chained and locked, and the bell itself, it too has been chained and locked into place.
01:26:01.119 --> 01:26:02.319
And it's rusty.
01:26:02.479 --> 01:26:02.800
Yeah.
01:26:02.960 --> 01:26:08.640
Like there's no one has been taking that bell for a ride, you know what I mean?
01:26:09.600 --> 01:26:11.680
No, no one indeed.
01:26:12.880 --> 01:26:16.560
Um, so was it a ghost bell that people heard?
01:26:17.279 --> 01:26:19.760
We have some unanswered questions here.
01:26:20.399 --> 01:26:21.199
Mm-hmm.
01:26:21.840 --> 01:26:24.319
Have you ever been in a church bell tower alley?
01:26:24.479 --> 01:26:25.039
Hmm.
01:26:25.199 --> 01:26:26.880
No, I can't say that I have.
01:26:27.600 --> 01:26:39.039
There was a tradition on my college's campus that before you graduated, you should check out the bell tower at our church on campus, which was quite prominent.
01:26:39.279 --> 01:26:49.039
So I went with some friends up to the bell tower, and the ladder, it looks exactly like the ladder in this one where it was just straight up.
01:26:49.119 --> 01:26:50.479
There's like no slant to it.
01:26:50.800 --> 01:26:55.199
It was one of those situations where, like, if you fell it was gonna be real bad news.
01:26:55.359 --> 01:27:02.159
But there is something just inherently unsettling, I think, about bell towers at night, even ones that don't have ghostly bells in them.
01:27:02.399 --> 01:27:02.800
Yeah.
01:27:03.119 --> 01:27:04.159
It made an impression.
01:27:04.479 --> 01:27:09.039
I just also think my church was haunted for really like your childhood church.
01:27:09.279 --> 01:27:09.520
Yes.
01:27:09.760 --> 01:27:11.680
Were there any strange happenings?
01:27:12.079 --> 01:27:16.399
Um there were certain parts of my church that just felt incredibly creepy.
01:27:16.479 --> 01:27:24.399
And so my dad had the keys to the church because we would do basketball in the gym, and then for a while I helped him clean.
01:27:25.279 --> 01:27:32.640
And so I would go into a lot of rooms and you're just like, oof, like I don't know, it could have been some sort of like gas link or something.
01:27:34.159 --> 01:27:38.720
A funny feeling, yes, like creepy, creepy feelings.
01:27:38.960 --> 01:27:43.760
Yeah, especially in the like upstairs youth group room.
01:27:43.920 --> 01:27:49.840
It was it was bad news, it just felt so just an unsettling air.
01:27:50.079 --> 01:27:51.520
Yeah, it's really interesting.
01:27:51.680 --> 01:28:07.439
Uh, because I think churches do tend to be places of really high emotion, and you and I have talked about how I would fully Believe that hauntings might be there might be some sort of like physical explanation for them.
01:28:07.680 --> 01:28:07.920
Right.
01:28:08.079 --> 01:28:13.520
Like that if something traumatic enough happens, like could it create some sort of gash in the space-time continuum?
01:28:13.600 --> 01:28:16.800
You and I have talked about this like for years, including on the podcast.
01:28:17.039 --> 01:28:32.479
And there is something about how much uh emotion and talk of evil and good and hellfire and bad deeds happen in churches, that it does feel like maybe it puts a little something into the uh into the air.
01:28:32.640 --> 01:28:35.840
I wonder if that might have something to do with it or if it's just completely all in our heads.
01:28:36.239 --> 01:28:38.000
But like in funerals too, you know.
01:28:38.159 --> 01:28:38.399
Yeah.
01:28:38.479 --> 01:28:39.520
Oh, that's a very good point.
01:28:39.600 --> 01:28:39.840
Yeah.
01:28:40.000 --> 01:28:40.239
Yeah.
01:28:40.479 --> 01:28:41.600
Whole bunch of funerals.
01:28:42.560 --> 01:28:48.880
So we cut to Tom's home where he and Evan are eating their dinner and watching the Red Sox play.
01:28:49.039 --> 01:28:56.079
So we get our first indication that this is maybe the only thing that Tom and Evan can bond over.
01:28:56.239 --> 01:28:56.560
Yeah.
01:28:56.800 --> 01:28:57.600
Is baseball.
01:28:57.840 --> 01:29:03.840
And Tom tells Evan that he's gonna have to stay at the inn that night, so he's sending Evan to spend the night with Ruth.
01:29:04.000 --> 01:29:06.720
And Evan has such a big reaction of that.
01:29:07.039 --> 01:29:10.640
I love that the reason he doesn't want to stay with Ruth is that she's so old.
01:29:10.880 --> 01:29:12.000
She's so old.
01:29:13.039 --> 01:29:15.199
And then he's like, actually, that's fine.
01:29:15.439 --> 01:29:20.720
Yeah, you can see the cogs turning in Evan's little conniving mind.
01:29:20.800 --> 01:29:21.600
And so can Tom.
01:29:21.760 --> 01:29:24.239
And he's like, wait, what did what did you just concoct?
01:29:24.720 --> 01:29:25.279
Like, nothing.
01:29:26.479 --> 01:29:32.800
And Tom can tell he's up to no good, and he tells Evan that he is going to be calling Ruth regularly to check on him throughout the night.
01:29:33.039 --> 01:29:38.479
So Patricia drives Tom to the inn where she tells him, This place freaks me out.
01:29:38.640 --> 01:29:41.119
Followed by a cheery, okay, good luck.
01:29:41.760 --> 01:29:48.640
And she leaves him alone, and he approaches the inn with a suitcase in hand, exorcist style.
01:29:48.880 --> 01:29:49.279
Yeah.
01:29:49.520 --> 01:29:56.960
It's fun because you and I were talking about how it gives like a little bit of the house on the property of Bates Motel.
01:29:57.279 --> 01:29:59.920
It also gives a little bit of exorcist.
01:30:00.159 --> 01:30:00.479
Yeah.
01:30:00.640 --> 01:30:01.600
It's a fun visual.
01:30:01.760 --> 01:30:05.520
So Tom enters the empty inn and dings the reception bell.
01:30:05.600 --> 01:30:23.439
And as he waits for Kurt to show up, he observes a really disturbing painting in the lobby, which depicts a pilgrim woman and these frightened children in a rowboat being overtaken by ocean waves, and in the bottom corner of the painting is just a child with his little imperil.
01:30:23.840 --> 01:30:24.880
Her arm reached out.
01:30:24.960 --> 01:30:26.239
She's like, Help.
01:30:26.720 --> 01:30:27.279
Huh.
01:30:27.520 --> 01:30:29.279
I bet that won't come into play later either.
01:30:29.359 --> 01:30:29.600
No.
01:30:29.840 --> 01:30:34.880
So Kurt appears and tells Tom that he took down some of the more provocative paintings.
01:30:35.199 --> 01:30:36.640
Like, what the fuck is this?
01:30:36.800 --> 01:30:38.720
Like, this isn't provocative.
01:30:39.119 --> 01:30:40.880
A drowning child.
01:30:41.279 --> 01:30:43.600
Uh, and Kurt leaves that question unanswered.
01:30:43.760 --> 01:30:49.600
He gives Tom a camcorder saying that the townspeople have insisted that he films the experience.
01:30:49.680 --> 01:30:51.039
Otherwise, they won't believe him.
01:30:51.119 --> 01:30:53.840
It's a real pixer, it didn't happen situation.
01:30:54.079 --> 01:31:02.640
On their way to the captain's suite, Kurt tells Tom that they have an honor bar and he just needs to sign his name on the forum and says what he drank.
01:31:02.800 --> 01:31:06.319
And there's a security camera in the bar, so he'll know if Tom didn't report his drinks.
01:31:06.479 --> 01:31:10.239
At which point Tom says, Well, it's not really an honor system, then is it?
01:31:10.800 --> 01:31:13.600
So Kurt opens the door to the captain's suite.
01:31:13.680 --> 01:31:20.000
He kind of motions for Tom to go inside, but he noticeably remains out in the hallway.
01:31:20.079 --> 01:31:24.640
And he tells Tom, you know, there's a fan for climate control.
01:31:25.439 --> 01:31:31.359
And he just kind of rambles nervously when Tom finally asks, say what you don't bring in the bag for guests.
01:31:31.520 --> 01:31:36.399
And in response, Kurt just kicks Tom's rolling suitcase inside.
01:31:36.640 --> 01:31:43.279
It's very funny physical comedy because Curtis is like short and stout, man, and the kick that he gives is hysterical.
01:31:43.600 --> 01:31:44.960
It's scary enough.
01:31:45.039 --> 01:31:52.640
I'm gonna say, I think it's scarier to have a room without air conditioning and just a fan than it to be haunted.
01:31:52.960 --> 01:31:53.359
Wow.
01:31:55.119 --> 01:31:55.840
I won't sleep.
01:31:56.000 --> 01:32:02.560
I might just hallucinate from no sleep because I will not sleep if it's not a nice chilly temperature in the room.
01:32:02.720 --> 01:32:03.920
Yeah, that is a fair point.
01:32:04.079 --> 01:32:07.279
I too do not sleep well when it's not freezing.
01:32:07.600 --> 01:32:08.640
Unfortunately.
01:32:09.520 --> 01:32:15.039
So he tells Tom that he'll be reachable at home if Tom needs him.
01:32:15.119 --> 01:32:17.840
And Tom's like, wait, you don't stay in the inn itself?
01:32:18.000 --> 01:32:21.359
And again, like Kurt just leaves him on red and he doesn't answer that.
01:32:21.600 --> 01:32:27.760
It really reminds me of The Haunting of Hell House slash like the 1963 adaptation, The Haunting.
01:32:28.319 --> 01:32:36.960
Where especially in the 63 movie, it's like almost played to comical effect where the groundskeepers leave them and they don't stay in the house itself.
01:32:37.119 --> 01:32:38.239
Yeah, they're like, good luck.
01:32:38.399 --> 01:32:43.520
Yeah, they're like, we'll be well far away from the property if you need us.
01:32:43.680 --> 01:32:50.880
And they say something like no one stays after dark, no one comes any closer in the night, in the dark.
01:32:52.319 --> 01:32:54.640
So Kurt kind of gives Tom his own little speech.
01:32:54.800 --> 01:33:08.319
And we then cut to a distressed Reverend Bryce in the church office where he's dug through the church records and uncovered a letter instructing him what to do if the church bell rings.
01:33:08.560 --> 01:33:16.399
And we can see just a little bit of the beginning of the text that says, To the rector of the church, I pray that this burden will never fall to you.
01:33:16.560 --> 01:33:20.479
But should the bell toll, there are steps you must take.
01:33:20.640 --> 01:33:23.680
And I would have to say that Bryce does indeed look burdened.
01:33:23.920 --> 01:33:26.960
Ugh, God, I can't imagine be like, uh poor Reverend Bryce.
01:33:27.680 --> 01:33:35.680
We cut to Bashir at the sheriff's office on the phone with his wife, and uh it becomes clear that the couple is planning to leave the island soon.
01:33:35.840 --> 01:33:44.960
So the wife on the other line is asking why they can't head out at the end of July, but Bashir gently pushes back and says, they'll definitely leave by Labor Day.
01:33:45.199 --> 01:33:54.560
And we see that Wick is uh in the nearby jail cell that's serving has his little drunk tank and asks Bashir if he's moving somewhere.
01:33:54.640 --> 01:33:57.760
And Bashir hesitates a little bit and then says, you know what, soon as I can.
01:33:58.560 --> 01:34:00.960
And Wick says, Smart.
01:34:01.680 --> 01:34:13.680
We return to Tom at the end, who is settling in nicely at the captain's suite, and he turns on the TV, which appears to be showing an old promotional video for the island.
01:34:14.000 --> 01:34:17.680
A man on screen says to come with him and I'll show him around the island.
01:34:17.840 --> 01:34:26.560
And then the shot remains on the man for an uncomfortably long time as he walks down a lake shore into the distance.
01:34:26.880 --> 01:34:28.960
This reminded me of Severance.
01:34:29.279 --> 01:34:29.520
Yes.
01:34:29.840 --> 01:34:31.279
The videos of Severance and Severance.
01:34:31.680 --> 01:34:32.479
Yeah, I agree.
01:34:32.560 --> 01:34:34.399
I do think it feels really similar.
01:34:34.720 --> 01:34:43.199
So light floods the room, and Tom notes that a lighthouse, in fact, the island's only lighthouse, is shining its light directly into the suite.
01:34:43.359 --> 01:34:45.119
So he closes the curtains.
01:34:45.439 --> 01:34:57.119
And downstairs, he turns on the lights of the parlor, he opens a cabinet, and it's at first glance one of those normal cabinets in a bed and breakfast that's filled with like different books and board games you can use.
01:34:57.520 --> 01:35:01.439
But these games are a little sinister, I would say.
01:35:01.760 --> 01:35:03.840
Yeah, I would say very, very sinister.
01:35:04.800 --> 01:35:07.119
There's one called Daddy's Home.
01:35:07.439 --> 01:35:08.079
Hate it.
01:35:08.319 --> 01:35:09.039
I hate it.
01:35:09.199 --> 01:35:13.119
The picture of this father on the cover, too, looks terrifying.
01:35:13.439 --> 01:35:20.560
Very evil-looking daddy sitting at an otherwise kind of Norman Rockwell-esque 1950s style dinner table.
01:35:20.880 --> 01:35:25.760
And another game, which we don't get any more glimpses at, is called She Shouldn't Have Said That.
01:35:26.640 --> 01:35:27.359
Good God.
01:35:27.600 --> 01:35:30.560
And yet another game is titled Simply Teeth.
01:35:30.720 --> 01:35:38.319
Ew, with a drawing of the happy little molar on the cover, and Tom opens the box to reveal the pair of pliers.
01:35:38.479 --> 01:35:39.840
Nothing, nothing else in there.
01:35:40.000 --> 01:35:41.520
No instructions, just pliers.
01:35:41.680 --> 01:35:43.119
That is Allie's worst nightmare.
01:35:43.840 --> 01:35:48.000
I really feel as though Feely Mealy from Annabelle Comes Home would be right at home.
01:35:48.479 --> 01:35:49.520
A hundred percent.
01:35:49.760 --> 01:35:52.800
I was thinking the exact same thing when we were watching it.
01:35:53.199 --> 01:35:57.600
Has there been, I'm curious now, a movie that's just about a haunted board game?
01:35:57.760 --> 01:35:59.760
Aside from, of course, Jumanji.
01:35:59.920 --> 01:36:01.600
I was gonna say, Jumanji's all we need.
01:36:01.760 --> 01:36:02.159
Yeah, you're right.
01:36:02.239 --> 01:36:05.039
That's kind of the movie's definitive haunted board game.
01:36:05.279 --> 01:36:06.560
I love that movie so much.
01:36:06.720 --> 01:36:08.159
Oh, it makes me want to see it now.
01:36:08.319 --> 01:36:08.880
It slaps.
01:36:09.199 --> 01:36:09.760
It really does.
01:36:09.920 --> 01:36:10.560
It holds up.
01:36:10.800 --> 01:36:16.720
Tom, who's, you know, kind of disturbed puts away teeth, and he picks up another game called Run.
01:36:16.880 --> 01:36:22.560
And he opens the box and pulls out a series of cards that say, not yet.
01:36:23.520 --> 01:36:24.640
Not yet.
01:36:25.760 --> 01:36:26.960
Not yet.
01:36:27.359 --> 01:36:28.159
Not yet.
01:36:28.319 --> 01:36:30.640
And then in all caps, run.
01:36:33.520 --> 01:36:35.840
So we cut to Tom at the honor bar.
01:36:36.239 --> 01:36:38.640
I just feel like I'd be I'd be out.
01:36:38.800 --> 01:36:39.520
You would run.
01:36:39.680 --> 01:36:41.359
I would just be like, I did not like that.
01:36:41.439 --> 01:36:42.079
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:36:42.159 --> 01:36:42.880
I would already be out.
01:36:43.039 --> 01:36:45.680
I don't know how Tom wouldn't just immediately look over his shoulder.
01:36:45.840 --> 01:36:47.840
The moment I read that, I would be so freaked out.
01:36:47.920 --> 01:36:52.560
Even if I didn't believe in any type of haunting, I would just be checking myself.
01:36:53.359 --> 01:36:58.079
Well, uh, Tom is determined to stay in the sun, and as we've established, he is locked in too.
01:36:58.239 --> 01:37:02.399
So we cut to him at the honor bar where he fills a tumbler with whiskey.
01:37:02.720 --> 01:37:08.960
And no sooner has he poured the drink than Kurt's voice comes over an intercom and tells him to fill out the form.
01:37:10.560 --> 01:37:13.199
I would be, if I was Kurt, I'd be watching everything.
01:37:13.279 --> 01:37:15.039
I'd be like, oh, so interesting.
01:37:15.359 --> 01:37:16.640
I would be so nosy.
01:37:16.880 --> 01:37:18.479
Uh so Tom fills out the form.
01:37:18.720 --> 01:37:20.880
He gives like a little cheers to the camera.
01:37:21.119 --> 01:37:28.479
And we then get a spooky little montage as Tom marks through his list of hauntings that the townspeople gave him to investigate.
01:37:28.720 --> 01:37:33.600
So he videotapes himself saying ugly Hordons, which I brought this up to you, Allie.
01:37:33.680 --> 01:37:35.359
This is uh neither here nor there.
01:37:35.520 --> 01:37:41.199
But I have always thought that the name Hordence was pronounced Hortense, but everyone in this town says Hordons.
01:37:41.439 --> 01:37:42.000
Hordons.
01:37:42.239 --> 01:37:43.439
Hordence here's a who.
01:37:44.640 --> 01:37:48.960
And I I want to ask uh our listeners, do you say Hortense or Hordons?
01:37:49.119 --> 01:37:50.640
You know, on a daily basis, the way you do.
01:37:50.960 --> 01:37:56.720
I was gonna say when Catherine brought it up, I was like, I've never heard this word in my life, so I have no idea how to pronounce it.
01:37:56.880 --> 01:38:00.560
It's another bathsheba, it's like a very older type name.
01:38:00.800 --> 01:38:01.920
But I am really curious.
01:38:02.000 --> 01:38:06.560
Uh, you know, if your childhood best friend was named Hortense or Hortense, how they themselves pronounced it.
01:38:06.640 --> 01:38:06.720
Yeah.
01:38:06.960 --> 01:38:10.159
I couldn't tell if it was just like the island accent or what.
01:38:10.479 --> 01:38:11.119
Let us know.
01:38:11.359 --> 01:38:19.920
So it's clearly a sort of a bloody Mary situation where he has to say the name three times and then check his reflection in the window, but nothing's there.
01:38:20.159 --> 01:38:23.840
He goes into a closet, turns off a light bulb, and counts to five.
01:38:24.000 --> 01:38:30.399
And the only creepy thing about that is when he tries to open the closet door, it's been locked, but he eventually kicks his way out of there.
01:38:30.640 --> 01:38:34.479
And the final item on the list is the crawl space.
01:38:35.359 --> 01:38:43.119
So he heads down to the cellar and he shines his light into the crawl space entrance, and that's a no from Tom.
01:38:43.600 --> 01:38:44.720
This is where he draws the line.
01:38:45.039 --> 01:38:47.039
Tom's like, absolutely not.
01:38:48.000 --> 01:38:53.359
So he heads back to his bedroom, and at this point he calls Ruth to check on Evan.
01:38:53.520 --> 01:38:58.319
And Ruth calls for Evan, but then gets distracted by a pie in the oven.
01:38:58.479 --> 01:39:00.720
She's just sort of rambling to herself.
01:39:01.039 --> 01:39:05.920
And while he's waiting on the line, a flash of light fills the bedroom.
01:39:06.079 --> 01:39:11.439
And Tom turns around to see that the curtains he closed earlier are mysteriously open.
01:39:11.680 --> 01:39:13.600
I like that he just ends the call with Ruth.
01:39:13.760 --> 01:39:14.000
Yeah.
01:39:14.159 --> 01:39:16.960
I'm like, I think Ruth has probably forgotten that he's on the line.
01:39:17.439 --> 01:39:18.479
Oh, absolutely.
01:39:18.720 --> 01:39:20.479
And he shuts the curtains again.
01:39:20.640 --> 01:39:25.680
And that's when he hears distant noises of what sounds like a party.
01:39:25.840 --> 01:39:28.800
And it's coming from the bathroom grate.
01:39:29.039 --> 01:39:35.920
So he approaches it, and at first he hears the sound of a crowd that's counting down to the new year.
01:39:36.319 --> 01:39:46.720
But when the people shout Happy New Year, what sounds at first like sounds of celebration turn to shouts of pain and horror.
01:39:48.399 --> 01:39:49.039
Hmm.
01:39:49.840 --> 01:39:51.279
What can it mean, Allie?
01:39:51.840 --> 01:39:52.319
I don't know.
01:39:52.479 --> 01:39:54.319
I know I feel like I know the reference.
01:39:54.560 --> 01:39:56.319
Yeah, you know what's so funny.
01:39:56.640 --> 01:39:58.960
I always, it's a Mandela effect.
01:39:59.039 --> 01:40:07.039
Like always remember the shining, that final picture being of a New Year's celebration, but it is in fact a 4th of July celebration.
01:40:07.600 --> 01:40:08.479
Oh, oh yeah.
01:40:09.119 --> 01:40:10.079
Maybe I don't get the reference.
01:40:10.399 --> 01:40:17.439
No, no, but I I think I'm curious if that's a comment, like that, if that actually is a Mandela effect, if a lot of people remember it that way too.
01:40:17.600 --> 01:40:20.800
And if that's why they make the reference to an actual New Year's party.
01:40:21.039 --> 01:40:22.479
Also, whose name is Lloyd?
01:40:22.560 --> 01:40:24.880
Because I know Lloyd is like, there's a main character named Lloyd.
01:40:25.279 --> 01:40:25.920
Oh, that's so true.
01:40:26.000 --> 01:40:27.520
Yeah, the definitely has to be a nod.
01:40:27.840 --> 01:40:28.800
Travel writer, Arthur.
01:40:28.880 --> 01:40:29.439
It's his last name.
01:40:29.600 --> 01:40:30.560
It's Arthur Lloyd.
01:40:30.640 --> 01:40:31.760
Yeah, good spot.
01:40:31.920 --> 01:40:37.439
Okay, just then Tom hears a thudding sound and some footsteps in the hallway.
01:40:37.680 --> 01:40:40.880
And he opens the door to investigate.
01:40:41.119 --> 01:40:43.920
But he says that thing where I would absolutely do this too.
01:40:44.000 --> 01:40:46.960
Like first he just flings open the door and then he like runs away from it.
01:40:47.680 --> 01:40:49.439
Yeah, that would be me.
01:40:50.479 --> 01:41:02.000
And it's a fun effect because the hallway is completely dark, but then the lighthouse light revolves around and shines through, and it illuminates this dark figure of a man down the hall.
01:41:02.319 --> 01:41:08.399
Uh, but then the figure turns on the hall lights and reveals himself to be just, you know, some guy in business clothes.
01:41:08.640 --> 01:41:10.079
Old business clothes.
01:41:10.319 --> 01:41:10.720
Yeah.
01:41:10.960 --> 01:41:11.279
Yeah.
01:41:11.359 --> 01:41:24.239
I really like this effect because perhaps these are clothes from the 1950s, but men's fashion has changed so little in the past 70 years that it could just be taken as just business clothes.
01:41:24.399 --> 01:41:25.680
Yeah, no, exactly.
01:41:25.920 --> 01:41:28.960
And they both seem a little confused about why the other one's there.
01:41:29.199 --> 01:41:34.239
Tom, who is just totally rattled, says, you know, Kurt didn't tell him that anyone else was gonna be there.
01:41:34.560 --> 01:41:39.680
And the other man says, you know, well, does does he usually announce guests to each other?
01:41:39.840 --> 01:41:40.960
And that's a fair point.
01:41:41.199 --> 01:41:41.520
I know.
01:41:41.600 --> 01:41:43.439
He comes off like not creepy at all.
01:41:43.520 --> 01:41:44.399
He's like, hello?
01:41:44.800 --> 01:41:47.439
Like, you know, he's not like giving any weird vibes.
01:41:47.680 --> 01:41:49.760
He's just like, Hi, I'm William.
01:41:50.000 --> 01:41:50.560
I'm William.
01:41:50.640 --> 01:41:52.239
I'm just an engineer, that's all.
01:41:52.399 --> 01:41:54.399
So yeah, he introduces himself as William.
01:41:54.479 --> 01:41:56.159
You know, he asks if Tom is okay.
01:41:56.319 --> 01:41:58.399
He was like, you know, you kind of look like you could use a drink.
01:41:58.720 --> 01:42:01.600
There's an honor bar downstairs, but Tom's like, no, no, no, no.
01:42:01.920 --> 01:42:03.439
No, I'm uh I'm good.
01:42:03.520 --> 01:42:03.920
Good night.
01:42:04.079 --> 01:42:09.920
Uh so he goes back to his bed, he turns on the TV, and the same promotional video is still playing.
01:42:10.079 --> 01:42:12.479
It's now just a view of an empty shore.
01:42:12.640 --> 01:42:14.239
Uh the tour guide is gone.
01:42:14.399 --> 01:42:17.840
And when he flips to the next channel, it's the same exact shot.
01:42:18.079 --> 01:42:26.720
He flips it again, same shot, flips it again, and this time there's a truly dark, sinister figure standing in the distance on the shore.
01:42:26.960 --> 01:42:28.720
Like it's giving Slender Man.
01:42:29.279 --> 01:42:31.520
Yes, absolutely giving Slender Man.
01:42:31.680 --> 01:42:39.520
And then without Tom's prompting, the channel changes again, and the tour guide appears once more in the foreground and says, Come with me.
01:42:39.760 --> 01:42:43.359
And then suddenly the TV and all the surrounding lights blow out.
01:42:43.439 --> 01:42:46.159
Uh so Tom yells that that was scary.
01:42:46.399 --> 01:42:49.760
And from down the hall, he hears William call out, You okay, neighbor?
01:42:51.119 --> 01:42:57.439
And we cut to Tom and William, who clearly have decided that they will, in fact, hang out at the honor bar.
01:42:57.600 --> 01:43:04.399
And as William fixes himself a drink, he says that he's been to Widows Bay before, but it was nice this time to order a cappuccino.
01:43:04.479 --> 01:43:06.000
And Tom looks so vindicating.
01:43:06.239 --> 01:43:06.399
Yes.
01:43:06.560 --> 01:43:07.920
He's like, These are my people.
01:43:08.079 --> 01:43:10.239
Someone with a taste for the finer things.
01:43:11.119 --> 01:43:14.399
And Tom asks William, what brings him to the island?
01:43:14.479 --> 01:43:21.920
And William answers that he works for a structural engineering firm and he's there to inspect uh a dock for the expansion.
01:43:22.239 --> 01:43:30.800
And so we get the first hint that Tom is really ramping things up for the tourist season, that they're probably going to be getting more ferries out to the island.
01:43:31.039 --> 01:43:34.399
And then this leads to Tom griping about his constituents.
01:43:34.560 --> 01:43:36.319
They definitely don't make his job easy.
01:43:36.560 --> 01:43:40.479
William says that they must appreciate him a little bit if they elected him as mayor.
01:43:40.640 --> 01:43:43.600
And this is where we learned that Tom ran uncontested.
01:43:43.840 --> 01:43:45.039
Obviously, Tom.
01:43:45.600 --> 01:43:48.159
And then William just says, that's embarrassing, Tom.
01:43:49.119 --> 01:43:50.720
So it kind of breaks the tension.
01:43:50.880 --> 01:43:52.000
The men laugh.
01:43:52.239 --> 01:43:58.960
They have a little bit more liquor, and we get another cheery little montage as they play Daddy's Home.
01:43:59.920 --> 01:44:02.399
Yeah, the pieces are hilarious.
01:44:03.199 --> 01:44:05.520
Yeah, the playing pieces there is like what?
01:44:05.600 --> 01:44:06.800
There's like a leather belt.
01:44:07.039 --> 01:44:08.560
There's a whiskey bottle.
01:44:08.720 --> 01:44:10.479
There's a baseball bat.
01:44:10.720 --> 01:44:12.960
Yeah, it's all really creepy and sinister.
01:44:13.119 --> 01:44:13.359
Yeah.
01:44:13.520 --> 01:44:15.520
And they're all playing and it's like just joyous.
01:44:16.960 --> 01:44:23.920
A sampling of the playing cards and the spinner spaces include things like, uh-oh, Daddy's younger boss yelled at him today.
01:44:24.239 --> 01:44:26.960
And roll to see if a neighbor's home.
01:44:27.119 --> 01:44:28.640
And Daddy is drinking.
01:44:28.960 --> 01:44:30.239
Daddy had a bad day.
01:44:30.479 --> 01:44:31.600
Oh gosh.
01:44:32.000 --> 01:44:38.560
Uh, and then after the game's over, the men chat over yet more drinks in the parlor.
01:44:38.800 --> 01:44:41.680
And Tom is letting us in on his backstory.
01:44:41.840 --> 01:44:50.239
So he tells William that his dad was a local and his mom was from the mainland, and they met on a schooner tour, but things didn't work out.
01:44:50.560 --> 01:44:56.319
Tom grew up in Massachusetts with his mom and he visited his dad on Widows Bay in the summers.
01:44:56.479 --> 01:45:02.000
And he used to drag those visits, and living with his dad meant walking on eggshells.
01:45:02.399 --> 01:45:08.239
And William, who's become like increasingly troubled looking, says he understands.
01:45:08.560 --> 01:45:15.359
I also just think it's it's nice because we get this like look into Tom's Tom never liked this island.
01:45:15.600 --> 01:45:15.920
Yeah.
01:45:16.159 --> 01:45:28.239
You know, and I think you know, this is obviously gonna come out like later why he's there and probably uh subconsciously why he's there and not letting himself believe certain things.
01:45:28.560 --> 01:45:35.039
Yes, yeah, because at this point I think as a viewer you are asking the natural question, which is like, well, why wouldn't you just leave?
01:45:35.520 --> 01:45:35.680
Man.
01:45:36.479 --> 01:45:47.920
And yeah, I also appreciate that it sets William up to be this kind of parallel that turns into a foil because William also clearly had a lot of antipathy towards the island.
01:45:48.079 --> 01:45:48.399
Yeah.
01:45:48.800 --> 01:45:56.560
So Tom goes on and says that you know, he and his dad didn't really talk much as they got older, but Tom did move to the island to take care of him when he got sick.
01:45:56.720 --> 01:46:00.880
And that's when he met his wife and they had their son, and the rest is history.
01:46:01.279 --> 01:46:04.239
William says that Tom's dad is lucky he came back at all.
01:46:04.319 --> 01:46:10.000
He he's still getting darker in his thoughts, kind of just staring at his tumbler of whiskey.
01:46:10.159 --> 01:46:10.560
Yes.
01:46:10.800 --> 01:46:25.279
And Tom gets more pensive and says, you know, his dad used to come home after a few drinks at the bar, and he would just spew these horror stories about the island and the kind of things that he was way too young to hear.
01:46:25.439 --> 01:46:29.760
And at this point, I ask, who amongst us hasn't had that experience with our grandmothers?
01:46:30.000 --> 01:46:30.399
Yes.
01:46:30.640 --> 01:46:36.479
I think millennials especially are just a generation of kids who grew up with their grandmothers playing unsolved mysteries.
01:46:36.800 --> 01:46:38.720
Yeah, or terrified.
01:46:38.960 --> 01:46:44.079
Yeah, a really traumatic lifetime movie that I would watch with my grandma, and I'm like, oh my god.
01:46:44.399 --> 01:46:48.960
Or just daytime talk shows with salacious topics we had no business knowing about.
01:46:49.199 --> 01:46:49.520
No.
01:46:51.359 --> 01:46:55.439
So Tom comes to a conclusion, you know, my dad just should have never had a kid.
01:46:55.600 --> 01:46:58.399
Yeah, he called Tom soft when he was six.
01:46:58.720 --> 01:47:03.199
I really can see just Tom just like rocking out to Phoebe Bridger's new album.
01:47:03.439 --> 01:47:03.600
Yeah.
01:47:03.840 --> 01:47:06.560
There's a lot of dad daddy issues that they share.
01:47:06.880 --> 01:47:11.840
And he says the only thing the island is really cursed with is the curse of alcoholism.
01:47:12.159 --> 01:47:16.000
We cut to William again, whose expression has grown disturbing.
01:47:16.159 --> 01:47:19.680
He looks almost angry, and then he says, You gotta be careful.
01:47:19.920 --> 01:47:22.079
They'll drag you down with them if you let them.
01:47:22.399 --> 01:47:27.600
Fucking useless ass backward small brain towny hicks.
01:47:27.760 --> 01:47:31.680
Let them all rotten hell and watch them all fucking burn.
01:47:33.039 --> 01:47:35.039
Just Tom's like, whoa.
01:47:35.920 --> 01:47:39.359
Like, look, I I don't like the townspeople, but whoa.
01:47:39.840 --> 01:47:40.720
Oh my god.
01:47:40.960 --> 01:47:48.560
But I I do really appreciate how we're coming full circle with Tom's insult to Wick at the beginning.
01:47:48.800 --> 01:47:57.680
Because you can tell it strikes a chord with Tom, but it's kind of when you hear your own sentiments reflected back to you that you realize, like, oh maybe that's actually really messed up for me.
01:47:58.000 --> 01:47:59.520
That was a terrible thing to say.
01:48:00.079 --> 01:48:15.600
This is another instance where Matthew Reese is acting as top-notch because we're seeing all the crinkles and tiny little micro expressions of him processing that, you know, actually it sounds like pretty uh despicable when you have that much hatred towards good God tawnies.
01:48:16.560 --> 01:48:21.439
But then William seems to snap out of it and he just, you know, says, like, oh well, maybe I've had too much to drink.
01:48:21.600 --> 01:48:24.159
So he tells Tom, he knows two things to be true.
01:48:24.319 --> 01:48:29.199
One, Tom's a great mayor, and two, there's no such thing as ghosts.
01:48:29.439 --> 01:48:30.720
Funny coming from you, William.
01:48:30.800 --> 01:48:33.760
I love how Tom's like, this is exactly what I needed.
01:48:34.079 --> 01:48:36.880
He's like, forget all the terrible things he just said.
01:48:37.039 --> 01:48:39.119
He's like, I'm a good mayor, that's all I heard.
01:48:39.520 --> 01:48:42.159
It really, poor Tom, that is all I needed to hear.
01:48:42.399 --> 01:48:48.239
And, you know, William says, you know, maybe all the old horrors of the town were real at one point, but they're not anymore.
01:48:48.479 --> 01:48:54.800
And as he heads off to bed, he tells Tom that he should finish his checklist of hauntings and really show the townies who's in charge.
01:48:54.960 --> 01:48:59.840
So William drunkenly stumbles up to his room and Tom pulls out his checklist.
01:49:00.000 --> 01:49:05.119
And there's one remaining item to check out that crawl space.
01:49:05.439 --> 01:49:15.920
So, emboldened by the liquor and William's little pep talk, he heads back down to the cellar and enters the crawl space with his flashlight and crawls deep in there.
01:49:16.000 --> 01:49:19.840
Because remember, the townsfolk said he had to go all the way, not just halfway.
01:49:20.079 --> 01:49:21.279
Can I tell you something?
01:49:21.520 --> 01:49:23.119
At this point, I was afraid.
01:49:23.439 --> 01:49:25.920
I was legit scared.
01:49:26.239 --> 01:49:35.359
Because at this point, yeah, like everything's kind of like funny horror, and this moment I was like, oh, you can feel the atmosphere changing, things are getting real.
01:49:35.600 --> 01:49:36.000
Yeah.
01:49:36.319 --> 01:49:45.600
I think honestly, without giving too much of a spoiler for the rest of this series, like this is the most scared I think I was in the entire series.
01:49:45.840 --> 01:49:48.800
It's uh it's a frightening little beast.
01:49:49.199 --> 01:49:50.079
This was the scariest.
01:49:50.319 --> 01:49:59.840
So Tom gets out the camcorder to prove his feat of bravery, but just as he's starting to record, he hears a creaking followed by footsteps.
01:50:00.399 --> 01:50:05.600
Of someone coming down into the cellar and Tom calls out William's name.
01:50:05.920 --> 01:50:06.800
It's so good.
01:50:08.000 --> 01:50:09.439
His voice just breaks.
01:50:09.600 --> 01:50:11.520
Uh, but William doesn't answer.
01:50:11.600 --> 01:50:16.800
Uh, not until he appears at the entrance, and you can only see his legs and feet.
01:50:16.960 --> 01:50:19.920
Uh, this is what really I feel like this was the scariest.
01:50:20.079 --> 01:50:23.840
Like seeing his legs and feet, and then him like kind of bending over.
01:50:24.079 --> 01:50:29.520
Yeah, because I think that your spidey sense as a viewer tells you that something's off.
01:50:29.920 --> 01:50:30.159
Yes.
01:50:30.479 --> 01:50:31.600
Something's wrong.
01:50:31.840 --> 01:50:33.520
And he says, howdy neighbor.
01:50:33.840 --> 01:50:39.039
I just, you know, I think only actual cowboys are allowed to say howdy, otherwise it's it's creepy.
01:50:39.199 --> 01:50:39.840
It's creepy.
01:50:40.000 --> 01:50:43.119
Only Woody, the cowboy, is allowed to say howdy.
01:50:43.439 --> 01:50:43.680
Yes.
01:50:43.840 --> 01:50:50.079
So William crouches down a little and we get a little bit more of his torso in his arms, but his face is still out of frame, as he says.
01:50:50.239 --> 01:50:51.279
Need some help in there?
01:50:51.520 --> 01:50:54.159
That is what I just I was really scared.
01:50:54.399 --> 01:50:55.119
I was too.
01:50:55.279 --> 01:51:00.960
But it is so perfect because it is a point of like the highest horror tension.
01:51:01.119 --> 01:51:01.359
Yes.
01:51:01.520 --> 01:51:07.920
It's truly scary, but it's also so funny because of Matthew Reese's performance where he's freaking out aloud.
01:51:08.000 --> 01:51:08.880
He's like, What no?
01:51:09.039 --> 01:51:10.159
He's like, oh no.
01:51:10.560 --> 01:51:13.760
And it's like, there's no way out except where William is.
01:51:14.159 --> 01:51:15.119
So it's trapped.
01:51:15.439 --> 01:51:18.079
Such a good because it put you in such a vulnerable position.
01:51:18.239 --> 01:51:20.880
Like you can't stand up full, you can't easily run away.
01:51:21.039 --> 01:51:22.399
You're, as you said, trapped.
01:51:22.880 --> 01:51:28.079
And of course, just then Tom's flashlight starts sputtering, and that's when it happens.
01:51:28.319 --> 01:51:36.079
William comes into the crawl space, and his top half is done up as the killer clown of 51.
01:51:36.399 --> 01:51:39.279
Ugh, it's so it.
01:51:39.680 --> 01:51:40.640
It's so it.
01:51:41.119 --> 01:51:44.640
Um, and I just put together too, like the crawl spaces, like the tunnels.
01:51:44.800 --> 01:51:46.159
Like, oh my gosh, yeah.
01:51:46.399 --> 01:51:47.359
I didn't think about that.
01:51:47.520 --> 01:51:48.239
You're so right.
01:51:48.479 --> 01:51:48.880
Yeah.
01:51:49.039 --> 01:51:50.720
And Tom screams in terror.
01:51:50.880 --> 01:51:58.399
His flashlight reveals a corpse of a man beside him who's dressed in like a flannel that seems very similar to Tom's.
01:51:58.960 --> 01:52:04.399
And then suddenly we cut to him waking up in a fright in the bed of the captain's suite.
01:52:04.800 --> 01:52:08.640
Uh, so it's morning, and we're left to wonder: was it all a dream?
01:52:10.800 --> 01:52:23.359
We cut to Kurt downstairs with Tom, who's winding through the security footage from the honor bar, because it's becoming evident that Tom was in fact the only person that Kurt led in the inn.
01:52:23.439 --> 01:52:25.920
And Kurt reminds him that he locked the front door himself.
01:52:26.000 --> 01:52:28.880
So whoever came in would have had to have a key.
01:52:29.119 --> 01:52:32.720
And Bashir, meantime, has arrived and checked out the crawl space.
01:52:32.800 --> 01:52:33.920
There's no one there.
01:52:34.079 --> 01:52:38.720
So Kurt shows the security footage of Tom playing Daddy's home.
01:52:38.880 --> 01:52:40.720
Uh, but he's all by himself.
01:52:41.039 --> 01:52:48.239
At that moment, you would have to be like, because if it wasn't all a dream and then you're doing that alone, I mean he's like, uh.
01:52:48.720 --> 01:52:50.560
Yeah, you can see I must have been sleepwalking.
01:52:50.640 --> 01:52:57.119
I'm like, you can see the cognitive dissonance and uh poor Tom's head, like woo, woo, woo, woo.
01:52:57.439 --> 01:53:02.399
Like we're skeptics, but if that happened, I would just be like, okay, everything I knew is a lie.
01:53:02.560 --> 01:53:02.800
Right.
01:53:02.880 --> 01:53:05.920
I'm skeptical because I haven't had a lot of evidence for the paranormal.
01:53:06.000 --> 01:53:07.359
But if I got it, boo howdy.
01:53:07.680 --> 01:53:08.319
Boo howdy.
01:53:08.640 --> 01:53:09.359
Don't say howdy.
01:53:09.600 --> 01:53:10.880
Only cowboys say howdy.
01:53:11.199 --> 01:53:12.159
You're so right.
01:53:12.880 --> 01:53:15.359
So Tom says, you know, like he just doesn't understand.
01:53:15.439 --> 01:53:18.159
Like, there really was a man, and he called himself William.
01:53:18.560 --> 01:53:24.560
And then for the second time, we get a voice from off-screen that says, Willie.
01:53:25.279 --> 01:53:30.560
I just it's like you can see Tom's eyes roll, just be like, Wick, how did you even get him here?
01:53:30.800 --> 01:53:32.960
He is truly the master of the unwanted entrance.
01:53:33.039 --> 01:53:33.439
Yes.
01:53:33.680 --> 01:53:35.760
He's just always showing up out of frame.
01:53:36.000 --> 01:53:39.119
And he says, Willie the clown, you you saw something.
01:53:39.359 --> 01:53:41.600
You're still gonna let folks stay here.
01:53:42.000 --> 01:53:45.680
And at that point, Kurt begins to argue with Wick, and he's like, you know what?
01:53:45.760 --> 01:53:50.640
I put every last cent to this end, everything's perfectly fine, there's no reason to shut it down.
01:53:50.880 --> 01:53:56.399
And at that point, Wick says, Well, you know, you go into the captain's suite, and it's another triple dog dare, folks.
01:53:56.640 --> 01:53:59.600
So now Kurt is gonna have to uh prove his medal.
01:54:00.079 --> 01:54:09.600
So the men go upstairs, and at Wick's urging, Kurt goes all the way into the suite, closes the door, and he stays there while Bashir counts to 10.
01:54:09.760 --> 01:54:12.720
And I'll say Bashir's very generous, he even gives him a very quick 10.
01:54:12.800 --> 01:54:13.600
It's about five seconds.
01:54:13.680 --> 01:54:14.800
That's not 10 seconds, yeah.
01:54:14.880 --> 01:54:19.279
And when they open the door, Kurt looks real freaked out.
01:54:19.600 --> 01:54:22.560
And he asks, What is going on?
01:54:22.640 --> 01:54:25.199
Because he thought they said it was gonna be 10 seconds.
01:54:25.439 --> 01:54:27.439
And Bashir says it was 10 seconds.
01:54:27.520 --> 01:54:28.880
How long do you think you're in there?
01:54:29.119 --> 01:54:40.239
And it's um some fun acting from Kurt, who you can tell, like Tom, is in a very similar position where he has to deny his own encounters with the supernatural to maintain his livelihood.
01:54:40.319 --> 01:54:41.439
And he's like, 10 seconds?
01:54:41.600 --> 01:54:42.239
10 seconds.
01:54:42.479 --> 01:54:45.520
Uh so then Wick suggests that he goes back in for 30.
01:54:45.680 --> 01:54:48.000
And Kurt asks if he can have some food first.
01:54:48.479 --> 01:54:51.039
Like, why do you need food for 30 seconds?
01:54:51.279 --> 01:54:54.640
But they shut Kurt back in without even a little granola bar.
01:54:54.800 --> 01:55:08.960
And as the supposed 30 seconds elapse, Wick uh turns his attention back to Tom and he says, You know that something's wrong with the island, you've seen it with your own two eyes, and it is not right to bring anyone else to the island, it's really dangerous.
01:55:09.199 --> 01:55:24.319
Uh but Shir opens a captain suite meantime, and Kurt is just sitting on the bed with his face in his hands, and like the room is fucking disarrayed, like the climate control van is like toppled over.
01:55:24.399 --> 01:55:27.680
And I didn't notice before, but looks like he's like thrown something at the window.
01:55:27.920 --> 01:55:28.079
Yeah.
01:55:29.119 --> 01:55:29.760
Yes.
01:55:30.560 --> 01:55:36.800
Uh but he gets up, he just acts as though nothing strange has happened until he just sinks to the floor in the hallway.
01:55:37.279 --> 01:55:46.640
And the Sheer goes into the room to investigate more, and he finds black mold behind some of the peeling wallpaper.
01:55:46.960 --> 01:55:53.840
And Kurt is clearly ecstatic that he's made this discovery because he's like, see, you know, Tom must have just hallucinated because of mold exposure.
01:55:54.000 --> 01:55:57.279
And Wig points out that mold wouldn't have that effect that quickly.
01:55:57.600 --> 01:55:59.279
Uh, but Kurt is appealing to Tom.
01:55:59.359 --> 01:56:00.000
He says, you know what?
01:56:00.079 --> 01:56:02.159
I can treat this within 72 hours.
01:56:02.319 --> 01:56:05.439
I'll seal up the entire captain suite just for good measure.
01:56:05.680 --> 01:56:09.680
And both of these men have a lot riding on the end staying open.
01:56:09.920 --> 01:56:20.720
So Tom, despite I would say his better instincts, uh, seizes on this explanation and he agrees to keep the inn open.
01:56:21.039 --> 01:56:26.399
And as he leaves, when Patricia picks him up, Wick is uh staring him down from his truck.
01:56:26.720 --> 01:56:33.359
But Tom shrugs it off and he gets into the car with Patricia and tells her that the stay went fine.
01:56:34.159 --> 01:56:40.800
And he casts one last apprehensive glance back at the end and they drive off.
01:56:41.039 --> 01:56:43.199
And that's the end of our second episode.
01:56:43.760 --> 01:56:44.960
I love it so much.
01:56:46.479 --> 01:56:47.279
I do too.
01:56:47.359 --> 01:56:49.600
I love a good haunted hotel story.
01:56:49.920 --> 01:56:51.039
Oh, yes.
01:56:51.279 --> 01:56:58.720
So, Ali, we've uh brought up a few of them, but we get references, of course, to the shining here, to it.
01:56:59.439 --> 01:57:00.560
1408.
01:57:01.039 --> 01:57:01.359
Yes.
01:57:01.760 --> 01:57:02.640
Love 1408.
01:57:03.039 --> 01:57:03.520
Stephen King.
01:57:03.600 --> 01:57:05.520
It was based on a Stephen King short story, right?
01:57:05.760 --> 01:57:06.399
I've read the short story.
01:57:06.479 --> 01:57:07.760
I love it.
01:57:08.159 --> 01:57:11.840
Of course, we get that iconic uh nod to the exorcist.
01:57:12.079 --> 01:57:12.560
Yes.
01:57:12.800 --> 01:57:22.159
And I brought up this reminds me a lot of an old 60s horror movie classic, which honestly it was a horror comedy called The Ghost and Mr.
01:57:22.319 --> 01:57:23.039
Chicken.
01:57:23.359 --> 01:57:26.079
I've only seen okay, I saw it a lot as a kid.
01:57:26.640 --> 01:57:28.479
I've only seen it once in my adulthood.
01:57:28.720 --> 01:57:29.039
With me.
01:57:29.199 --> 01:57:29.600
With you.
01:57:30.159 --> 01:57:42.000
Yeah, it stars Don Knotts, who played the iconic Barney Fife and Andy Griffith, and he's kind of playing a version of that character where he really wants to be like a hard-hitting journalist.
01:57:42.239 --> 01:57:57.199
And there's an old murder house in a small town uh that people say is haunted, and he is kind of goaded into staying the night at this haunted house, and strange things begin to occur, but it's really similar.
01:57:57.279 --> 01:58:04.640
He's like trying to chronicle uh his time there, and uh, I won't give away the ending, but it's uh it's a very fun story.
01:58:04.800 --> 01:58:17.520
So, you know, it's like your typical haunted house slash haunted hotel story, but the dynamic with him and Tom felt really similar where they're both very cowardly, but trying to stick it out to prove a point.
01:58:17.760 --> 01:58:26.159
Yeah, and isn't it the I know we talked about it before, was it haunting of Hellhouse or was it the haunting where they're like paid to stay in the house overnight, right?
01:58:26.399 --> 01:58:27.920
Um called The Haunting?
01:58:28.079 --> 01:58:35.920
Yeah, so yeah, the 63, I think, adaptation of The Haunting of Hell House was just called The Haunting.
01:58:36.399 --> 01:58:42.560
And I and that I they're not paid, but they're all invited to come stay at the house.
01:58:42.720 --> 01:58:43.039
Okay.
01:58:43.279 --> 01:58:51.439
And the main character wants to stay because she's had like some sort of run-ins with the paranormal and she has this like strange attraction to the house.
01:58:51.680 --> 01:58:53.199
I love that movie so much.
01:58:53.359 --> 01:58:57.119
It's like more ensettling than any movie from the early 60s has a right to be.
01:58:57.279 --> 01:59:01.199
But I wonder if maybe the Ots remake, they're they're paid, Allie.
01:59:01.359 --> 01:59:04.319
Allie knows her Ots horror movies much better than I do.
01:59:04.560 --> 01:59:16.399
But yeah, regardless, I just I love so much about Widows Bay that it was clearly made by people who have a deep affection and reverence for the horror genre.
01:59:16.560 --> 01:59:28.800
All of these nods feel really lovingly done, and it's a delight as someone who loves those books and films and shows just as much as the creators do.
01:59:28.960 --> 01:59:32.399
Yeah, like I love every single one of the movies that is referenced.
01:59:32.640 --> 01:59:33.039
Yeah.
01:59:33.439 --> 01:59:36.880
Well, and I I enjoy the pilot when we first watched this.
01:59:37.039 --> 01:59:44.000
Like I was interested, but I didn't really know if it was gonna be able to kind of deliver on the premise it was setting up.
01:59:44.079 --> 01:59:47.359
And this was the episode where I was all in.
01:59:47.600 --> 01:59:48.399
Locked in.
01:59:48.560 --> 01:59:49.760
Yeah, yeah.
01:59:50.159 --> 01:59:50.720
Absolutely.
01:59:51.039 --> 01:59:52.720
It's a terrific one.
01:59:53.199 --> 01:59:54.960
So that's it from us today.
01:59:55.039 --> 01:59:57.680
That's our coverage of the first two episodes of Widows Bay.
01:59:57.760 --> 01:59:59.840
We hope you had fun with us.

And next time, we're gonna be covering episode three and four, the inaugural swim and beach reads.
02:00:18.159 --> 02:00:20.800
Oh, love beach reads so much.
02:00:21.520 --> 02:00:24.560
So join us then if you dare.
02:00:24.960 --> 02:00:28.560
