Somewhere around minute thirty-four of this episode, Amit Parmar describes the best recruiter he ever managed: a guy who refused to look at the applicants. He would take the req, go out into the world, find the right person, and disposition the inbound pile afterward. As a TA leader running dashboards, Amit hated it. Looking back, he thinks that recruiter was the only one doing the actual job. That is where this conversation lands, and almost none of it is where it started.
Amit is the co-founder and CEO of Cliquify, an employer brand storytelling platform used by global enterprises, and he spent eighteen years in the seats before that, starting in HR transformation at IBM. He came on to talk about what storytelling actually means for recruiters, and his definition is refreshingly small: stop rewriting the job description and go ask the hiring manager what kind of leader they are, because that is the only thing the candidate actually wants to know.
Desiree’s immediate response is the funniest and most damning moment in the episode. She is not sure most hiring managers could answer it. Ashley then flips the whole premise, arguing the storytelling that matters most is not recruiter to candidate at all. It is recruiter to hiring manager, and she walks through a candidate she pushed forward that week who failed a technical screen, circled back on their own to fix it, and just got called the best performer that manager has seen on a role that sat open for two and a half years. An AI screen would have ended that story at the failed question.
From there it gets loose, and better. Amit describes an industry approaching bots talking to bots, applicants gaming systems at a scale nobody has seen, ATSs stacking filters on filters. Desiree calls out clients who cannot get headcount approved but can get five new tools approved, and names the actual failure: nobody diagnosed the original problem before buying the solution. Ashley coins the Competitive Plateau, the point where a high-volume worker has cycled through every competitor in their market and stops choosing jobs on fifty cents an hour, and then says out loud that products profit off recruiter dysfunction, forgetting for one glorious second that she is saying it to a product CEO. He takes it well, because he agrees. Amit’s counter is that the order everyone uses is wrong: it is not people, process, tech. It is strategy, then process, then the people who fit that process, then tech as an enabler.
And underneath all of it, the reason we keep buying shiny things, is that humans innovate because we are lazy, and a recruiter with fifty open reqs does not have time for strategy.
