Speaker 1: Five Double A Mornings with Matthew Pantellus.
00:00:14
Speaker 2: Good morning to you. Time is seven past nine. A little bit overcast out there, but as you heard Kate say in the news, well it's going to be partly cloudy today and that is certainly what is happening outside. Some sunshine before we get some showers over the weekend. But look, still a good day today. Yesterday was a cracker, wasn't it in the afternoon. Just a beautiful day. But anyway, today on the program, we'll have a look at trade ees and the issue. I mean, we know we don't have enough in the country and they're not considered a priority through skilled migration, so we'll have a look at that issue. Petrol stations around Adelaide, twenty nine of them handed expiations for improper or wrong pricing, so not notifying the app in time the prices were going up or in fact coming down. I bet going up more so. But we'll have a chat to the RAA about that. Comedian Jim Jeffries in town over the weekend. We'll speak with him. The world's premier sheep industry event happening in Adelaide. We'll speak to the founder of Margar Lamb and the Sala Festival to be announced today. We're hoping to talk to someone about the Telstra outage this morning. Did that affect you. I see around the country there's been and it was country wide nationwide. Seems to be back on. Is that the case. Let me know if you got your Telstra service back, But it seems to be back pretty much everywhere. But I see transport systems public transport disrupted as well as a result of that outage. We've put in calls to a few people to have a chat with about the Telstra outage, and Telstra having a media conference in around about half an hour from now just over that, so we'll let you know what they've got to say about the outage. The Sala program announced today as well. We'll speak to them too. We've got a couple of tickets to Into the Woods at Her Majesty's Theater at the end of August as well, a bit over a month from now, about six weeks, so lucky call it at the program this morning between now and twelve o'clock, we'll have a look at what's going on in Iran. I see the US as fired missiles this morning into Iran and they say it's in retaliation over what's happened in the Strait of Hormuz with Iran apparently striking some shits. So on that rolls. I thought we were at the end of that. We'll talk to Michael Schubridge about all of that at around Court at to ten this morning. So lot's coming up on the program today. There's a few things going on in terms of police horse windsor. I don't understand why we need to clone this horse. Oh fine, clone it, don't care one way or the other. But why are we running out of horses? Is that the reason he contributed? Oh hang on, this is a different one. This is a horse that's retired. It's a different horse that's been cloned. So Wins is retiring this police horse. Wins are retiring after twenty years of service, two thousand odd operational hours. And okay, off he goes into the pasture wherever police horces end up. But we're cloning a different horse, and I don't get why. I don't think we're running out are we of police horses? Police Grace. They're a magnificent horse, But do we really need to clone them? Okay, fine, we're cloning a horse. Great police. We're at Roxby Downs yesterday. This is a different story. And protesters have decided to pick at Olympic Dam, only about forty five years too late. But a group of about twenty five protesters were there late yesterday obstructing traffic and approaching the main gate, and so police had to be called out to Olympic Dam not far out of Roxby Downs to deal with some minor graffiti damage and working with BHP to in short security at the event. But I wonder what prompted that. I mean, they've only been mining since the late nineteen eighties, so at least forty years too late. But it was nineteen eighty two when legislation passed State Parliament by one vote to allow Roxby Downs to go ahead. What a good decision that one was. Few things have passed, monumental things have passed by one vote. Pokey's got through with one vote, Roxby Downs got through with one vote, both of those in the upper houses. I recall not the lower house so much. But anyway, there we are. And yesterday morning we were talking about the fight that a couple of young people were involved in, and this is the fight clubs. What happens in fight clubs days in fight clubs, you might recall. Police have been busy since then, and the founder of the fight club, this kids fight Club, was 's saying that good, thanks for the publicity. We'll keep doing it. No one's going to tell me to stop. Well, Northern District Police last night arrested reported rather two boys aged fourteen and seventeen for fighting in a public place and they'll be summons to appear in court at a later date. And police have identified another four boys involved in the incidents and are in the process of locating them. So you know, police are going to be looking at all those videos that have been posted online and they'll be after the people involved. So good, I mean, that's the right thing to do. I totally agree with, for instance, the premiere saying this is terrible and needs to be stamped out, and the government will be doing whatever it can to ensure that happens, as they should, because we shouldn't have fight clubs going on around the place with kids involved in fighting in ovals and parks and wherever else. The semi professional I suppose, except it's not really professional. It's just someone's idea of having a fight club, as if that's a smart thing to do, makes no sense. All right. On this day, today's the eighth of July, we got the one for you today and reports broadcast a UFO crash landed in Roswell, New Mexico, and what became known as the Roswell UFO incident, and it started with debris found by a rancher on this day, becoming the basis for UFO conspiracy theories alleging the US military recovered a crashed extraterrestrial spacecraft metallic and rubber debris recovered by Roswell Army Airfield personnel from the US Army Air Forces, announcing possession of a flying disc, it made international headlines but was retracted within a day. The debris was apparently from an uncrewed military balloon consisting of link balloons and associated equipment operated from the nearby Army airfield as part of a top secret project called Project Mogul, a program intended to defect detect rather Soviet nuclear testing, and so to obscure the purpose and source of the debris. The Army reported it was merely a conventional weather balloon, but of course the speculation took off, and it wasn't helped by the Roswell Daily Record, the local newspaper, with the headlines saying the RBAF being the Roswell Army Airfield captures flying saucer on ranch in Roswell region and away it went. But yeah, if anyone thinks a UFO really crash landed at Roswell, I mean think it through. So these people fly billions of killometers, these aliens, billions of kilometers across the universe, and then they can't stop and hit the ground here on Earth. And it's always in America, in somewhere remote, you know, it's never never in New York or Sydney or New Mexico or or Mexico, I should say Mexico City or somewhere populated and where millions can see. It's somewhere remote. So you know, call me a skeptic, but I don't believe it. Don't believe these aliens are smart enough to travel billions of kilometers and then can't find the brakes. Alright, he quarter past nine on five double A eight double two to three double O double oh is the number will take a quick break back with more after these were.
00:08:31
Speaker 1: Five Double A Mornings with Matthew Pantellus.
00:08:41
Speaker 2: Nineteen past nine. Just quickly on Roswell today, the anniversary of the alleged alien crash landing nineteen forty seven. Shane says, yet you are a skeptic mate when it comes to UFOs. You don't know the truth. No one really knows, so it could be true, it might not be. But knowing how the US government liked to cover up things, I don't doubt it at all. Kinds regard Shane. Thanks Shane. Karen says, come on, mat everything happens in America and it's all true. And Paul says that maybe the Aliens should have checked their oil, Thank you, Paul. Or you know they'd have an EV, don't you. They'd be flying an EV for sure. Good on you, Paul. Thank you. Let's talk about skilled workers in Australia. And we have a skilled migration program. We know we need tradees in this country and we don't have enough, and there's apprenticeship programs in all sorts, but when it comes to skilled trades people coming into the country, it seems there's no urgency in getting them through with visas, etc. Danita warn master builders are so Australiat CEO and Danita's on the line. Good morning, Good morning. So this is an issue, isn't it. We've got people who can come into the country with the right trades, experience and skills, yet we don't seem to be in a rush to get them in.
00:09:55
Speaker 3: No.
00:09:55
Speaker 4: Unfortunately, we're just not prioritizing the skills that we desperately need in this country when it comes to building the homes we need all the schools, or the hospitals or roads and so forth. We know we've got a housing crisis in this country, but we're not elevating the skilled migration needs. Of course, we need to employ more Australians, but we simply don't have enough coming through that apprentice pipeline. So skilled migration has got to be part of the solution.
00:10:24
Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely. Now we've got a four tier system apparently, you know, for different levels different occupations in terms of skills and tradees sort of struggled through along with the actors, dancers, entertainers, animal trainers, media and music professionals. So you know, it doesn't seem to be a priority.
00:10:45
Speaker 4: No, We've been calling for quite some time for a fast track specialized trade e visa. It's something that exists in Canada and New Zealand and the UK. We're competing on an international market and we're simply saying, you've still got to make sure that the right people with the right skills come to this country, particularly if it's licensed trades. But why aren't we prioritizing it over as you say, whether it's media or dances or industry association lobbyists as the case SOB so, we desperately need more people building, that's a simple fact, and we need the government to step up and prioritize this important pathway.
00:11:27
Speaker 2: Okay, all right, And look, no argument with that is the government would know this, wouldn't I be this is basic common sense. They would know this. Why haven't they acted on this?
00:11:36
Speaker 4: Yeah, look, it's been really odd. We've been pushing this for quite some time. It's anominally that's existed for at least five six years, and we know that work for shortages are really slowing things down. I mean a classic situation is that you know, detached home pre COVID used to take about eight or nine months on average. It now takes about twelve thirteen months to build and part of that problem is because we simply don't have enough skilled trade is in the system as we're trying to build around the country. So you know, we continually press the government for change, and that is a major the workforce issues are a major priority for us at the moment.
00:12:17
Speaker 2: And that would be for everyone, wouldn't it. In terms of building skills, carpenters, construction tiler's, electricians, plumbers of the whole box and dice, I.
00:12:24
Speaker 4: Imagine it's everyone. It's right from those structural trades right through to the finishing trades. And Hey, if any of your listeners are thinking about a career change or looking about what they're going to do next year, you know, if they're on their way to school, we'll have a bit of a think about doing a trade. AI is not going to be taking it over any time soon. So there's a job guaranteed from my perspective.
00:12:48
Speaker 2: What about things like jobs like surveying, for instance, which perhaps isn't really thought about in that sort of skill set, but it's a skill of its own. Obviously, do we have enough surveyors?
00:12:59
Speaker 4: No, we don't. And part of the problem that we have at the moment is that those professional occupations in building a construction, particularly things like surveyors who are critical in terms of ensuring that we have development and approvals, building approvals, all of those sorts of things. So surveyors, planners, those sorts of things also in shortage as well, and local government finds it particularly hard to get those people with the right qualifications, and that intern also slows the process down as well, because.
00:13:32
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. I mean, you need the surveyor to start the whole process, don't you to map out the block and everything that goes along with it.
00:13:39
Speaker 4: That's right. We need those surveyors and all of those professions, engineers and so forth. So it is certainly there is a shortage across all the spectrum of building construction careers. It is something that we think is a critical important issue for all levels of government to addres But when it comes to skill migration, when it comes to apprentices, the buckstops with the federal government the other ones that need to be focusing on those things, working with state governments to understand. I'll give credit to the South Australian government. They have been working really hard in trying to elevate building and construction trades, helping our Master Builder South Australia in that regard. So there's some good examples of what's going on in South Australia at the moment, but more needs to be done across the country.
00:14:29
Speaker 2: Yeah, how's the retention rate for apprentices going these days, Anita? I know I've spoken with you and I'm sure Will Frogley too and Housing Industry Association about the numbers that sort of start off but don't make it through.
00:14:44
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's unfortunately, it's still really low. It's lower than we anticipated. It sort of averages at about fifty percent. We know if you go through an industry association, not for profit group training organization, the retention rates are much higher. But certainly what we're saying is that people find it really difficult once they get to about second third year, where you know, the taste requirements get a little bit harder, and so what we need to ensure that people are work ready when they start an apprenticeship in the first place. We really see a potential for greater upticks of school based apprentices that's when you're working a couple of days a week while still staying at school to get those fundamentals right, your maths, your English, and also mature a little bit as well. So you know, we're pushing hard for additional funding in the areas where we know we get really good retention rates, and they include things like supporting industry group training organizations as well as school based apprenticeship.
00:15:46
Speaker 2: We're talking vet training vet courses here, aren't we.
00:15:49
Speaker 4: Yeah, we are vet training. I mean that's the real focus at the moment. That's where the acute skill shortages are is in the trade qualified areas and we need to support people through that trade qualification journey so we don't see the dropout rights that we're experiencing at the moment.
00:16:10
Speaker 2: All right, appreciate your time this morning, and thank you for the clarification on this topic.
00:16:16
Speaker 4: Thank you. Great to talk.
00:16:18
Speaker 2: Likewise, Danita warn Master Builders Australia CEO on tradees coming into the country scene as no more important than economists, animal trainers and actors, which I mean, if we're talking animal trainers, you may as well talk circus performers, right and clowns in coming out of clown cars on visus. Yeah, that's kind of what I think anyway, But we could do better. We've got a shortage, we've got people coming in with skills or wanting to come to Australia with skills, the right skills that the country needs to try and keep us on track with housing targets, and we don't seem to be treating them that well at the door when they're wanting to come. Now, immigration is way too high. We know this, okay, but yet we do need some of the people that are coming in, if they have the right skills, to make up the shortfall of people in the country with those skills. Not enough of us kids primarily taking up the careers that are needed to be filled in terms of the home construction building industry. So you know, we've got people coming in that can do the job, let's help them get in. Isn't that the idea, David says. A lot of migrants claim to have skills, but haven't seen many with any skills. They end up driving ubers. Thank you, David Bell, says Matthew. When was the last decade that Master Builders Housing Industry Association went into high schools to try and recruit like electrics, electricians, et cetera. At the last of my kids left in twenty one, there was no one from the industry recruiting for VET courses. Students are tasked to find their own way in this space. How about doing this rather than bushing immigration? Our kids need training. Yeah, I agree, Bell. I don't know what master Builders do. I know my son's school. They have careers days where they take kids to the expos, for instance, and they also have career events within the school where unis come and trade groups come. So I imagine groups like HIA or Master Builders might be part of that. I think it depends on the school though, and their school also has a careers person full time who individually helps kids with selecting a VET course or a UNI degree or whatever it might be. But I think that very much does depend on the school. Thank you for the text. I think it's a really good point. I've worked with young plumbing apprentices, says Paul, but they're more interested in their mobile phones than working and following directions. It's a chore for them, Yes, mobile phones, alright, all right, keep it coming. Nick is on the line from Coro Valley.
00:19:00
Speaker 5: Hello, Nick, morning, Matthew. I want to comment A Bell tried as well. But first and more important matter we are would tell stra we've got none net and my wife's health is not very good. I managed to call Jesse, you producer, and he left. He left me on the radio on my mobile to listen to you. It's not good enough. And the next thing I beut tried. When I come to this country, I was teena teen Nigiera and I come on my own to start new life. I moved to a street in Albert Street, Goodwood, and next next to the little park was at school. My first my first question asked what's why these people going nighttime to school? And the answer was they learning tried. I was gonna go, but my English was zero, So I started working in a factor the manefactor, this Matthew. Now they shot all these things down and and we will we nobody to work you.
00:20:01
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, the Goodwood Trade School that was there, absolutely.
00:20:06
Speaker 5: Have a good day and anybody else will problems with saying the heroes pleased.
00:20:09
Speaker 2: Yeah, well if you can, love to hear from you. But we'll have an update. Telstra about to hold a media conference in the next fifteen minutes, Nick, and we'll let you know what they say.
00:20:17
Speaker 5: Okay, I tried to call it and we can't get through.
00:20:22
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, it might not be a bad idea. For us all and we're I'm with Votaphone. I had the whole family with Votaphone, because it's a plan whatever. It might make sense if you know, two of you in the house or more be on different providers, so somebody's got a phone at least that will work. Just kind of brainstorm that, right then it's kind of obvious. But I know you get good deals if you're all together and bundle everything and all the rest of it. But maybe it is a sensible thing to do to have different people with different couriers, different providers. Somebody with Voteraphone, someone with Telstra, and if there's a third phone, someone with Optus and that way, if one goes out, you've still got one or two others that'll work. But anyway, just a thought, all right. Twenty nine to ten News headlines Time on five Double.
00:21:10
Speaker 1: A five Double A Mornings with Matthew.
00:21:15
Speaker 2: Pantellus twenty five to ten on five Double A will bring you a little bit of Michael Ackland. Shortly. Here's the Telstra CEO. He's just started a media conference and says ninety percent of calls and data has been restored, which is positive. Tim says with the Telstra outage, the NBN is still working. People can change their settings to use the NBN is their carrier and still make calls. William says Matthew, I'm in my mid forties. I've had a landline. People came over and called me a dinosaur in the past. Look who's got their game face on today? Go the landline, William, You are a dinosaur though. Gosh, I haven't had a landline since two thousand and seven. Why but anyway, okay, you've got one. Good on you. Jody says, I didn't have the internet fifteen minutes ago, restarted my modem and now everything is back to normal today. Thank you for all of those. Keep them coming through. We'll let you have listened to Michael Ackland and just to Tick, let's talk about service stations who have been fined. In fact, twenty nine servos in a blitz and the government announced this beforehand, and yet obviously servo station operators didn't get the message. They had a thousand inspections carried out since a crackdown began to make sure that when servos set a price at the pump that that is reflected on apps, no matter which one you're using across the board within thirty minutes. That's the idea. Whether the price goes up or comes down, twenty nine have been fine and finds are about to go up to high levels for service station owner's Peter natras Ria, Principal Advisor of Energy on the line, good morning, thank you for your time, Good morning matter. It's disappointing that many. I mean, you know, if it was three or four, you'd say, well that's that's you know, ignorance or whatever, or they forgot you know, but twenty nine is almost deliberately not setting the or not informing the websites of the price.
00:23:17
Speaker 6: Well, I think.
00:23:18
Speaker 7: It's really important that the government has backed up its revisions to the legislation with those over a thousand inspections. Now think it's really important to remember that most service stations do the right thing and they do provide a really important service to our community. So you know, it's credible threat of you know, inspectors catching people doing the wrong thing. That's really important to give motorists the confidence that the system works and it's there to protect them.
00:23:47
Speaker 8: Yeah.
00:23:47
Speaker 2: Absolutely, And the government increasing expiations and these are the servo owners or operators five hundred and fifty dollars for an expiation goes up to five thousand dollars and a court in post penalty if it ends up in court from ten grand to twenty grand from later on this month, so they really will fill that.
00:24:06
Speaker 7: Indeed, I think Minister Brown has done the right thing to put petrol station operators on notice that these penalties are going up later this month, and by stepping up those inspections, you know, really have focused the industry on the importance of real time fuel pricing because it's really been a game changer for motorists to have this real time pricing in on their phone to help them find cheaper fuel.
00:24:33
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:24:33
Speaker 2: Absolutely, I use it every time I go to fill up. I got to say, so it's quite quite the handy thing. How's it meant to work? So you know, it comes what time is it? Nine point thirty eight and survey decides at the moment prices are going from a dollar I don't know sixty to or a dollar sixty five. What's the process from there?
00:24:53
Speaker 9: So what the.
00:24:54
Speaker 7: Petrol stations need to do is notify the governments. Like Consumer Business Affairs, they have a sense database and within thirty minutes of the changing a price or indicating that fuel is unavailable or becoming available. So whenever they make a change, they need to notify that central database and then fuel apps like the RaaS we're able to access that data to make it publicly available for people.
00:25:19
Speaker 2: Okay, so it is a thirty minute window.
00:25:21
Speaker 7: Yeah, there's a thirty minute window, and that's that's some people to bear that in mind, but most you know, the petrol stations do a really good job, like we say, most of the time, and our app is constantly refreshing to make sure we're getting the latest data available to motors.
00:25:38
Speaker 2: And there's a number of apps out there. I mean, yours is great. I use yours. I use petrol Spy as well, which which is pretty good as well, I find for having a general look across the state in one go. So there's there's quite a few around, aren't there.
00:25:53
Speaker 7: Yeah, there are a few around. I think important thing from the RAA, you know that ours is free, and that offers so much much more to motorists, you know than just that fuel. You know, don't want too many apps on your phone. So you know, there's eight hundred and forty thousand RAO members, so having that app is one that they don't need to have someone else's app.
00:26:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, all right, So have you ever done the sums on what people could save by using an app? I mean, how would you know really? But have you have you had a look?
00:26:24
Speaker 7: Yeah, So we regularly check with members and all motorists and last year we found that, you know, motorists indicated they felt they were saving at least one hundred and seventeen dollars a year. So that works out about fifty eight million dollars a year in savings. Now, some people would be, you know, certainly saving a lot more than that, because when we were seeing the fuel cycle before, we were seeing bigger variations, and so the average is around one hundred and seventeen dollars per year, which makes it worth lot.
00:26:58
Speaker 2: I suppose it depends you know that saving on do you drive ten k's across town to get petrol two cents cheaper over there than where you are?
00:27:06
Speaker 7: Well, I think that's the value of the app as you can plan ahead, so before you take off on your journey is to have a look at the app, check where the fuel is the right price on route? You know, because you do always have to weigh up your time and the fuel that you'll use to go out of your way to get it. We wouldn't recommend that's not you know, cancels out the benefits.
00:27:26
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, all right, So petrol stations now know with twenty nine expiations, So the government's pretty serious on making sure that everything does go to plan in terms of them notifying any changes up or down on any type of fuel diesel LPG presumably as well and certainly unlettered the various types. They've got to notify within thirty minutes.
00:27:47
Speaker 7: Indeed, and I think with the penalties going up, the incentive we'll only get stronger for petrol stations to do the right thing by notress.
00:27:55
Speaker 10: Yeah.
00:27:55
Speaker 2: Absolutely, Peter, appreciate your time, Thank you, Thank you. Peter natris raa principal advisor. Energy twenty nine servos around the state, not just the city, not just the metro area, but regionally as well. They're included have been fined in a government crackdown where they had inspectors out comparing prices on the boards at the bowser with what was on the website and where the changes were being made within thirty minutes, where the notification was being sent within thirty minutes, So yes, it's good, and so they should because why not. This is a little bit of Michael Acklan, the Telstra CEO, on what has happened this morning. He says ninety percent of services are resumed. He is a little bit of his media conference.
00:28:41
Speaker 11: We identified an issue affecting some mobile calls and data services. So the issue is impacting a number of nodes within our network that keep time across the mobile network, and when these nodes are not operating as expected, which is what has occurred, other parts of the network can be affected, resulting in intermitute issues with some mobile calls and data sessions. We've been able now to restore some of these notes, but that will take time for that to reset across all the thousands of servers across the network. We believe that just under ninety percent of calls and data services at this point are now working correctly. So customers who are having trouble making a call, encourage you to try again, and depending on how the call is routed through the network, it may connect successfully on another attempt. And people are seeing that occur. If you're at home or in the office and you have access to Wi Fi. We encourage you to use that. If you are connected to Wi Fi services such as WhatsApp messaging or teams or Facebook or face time, should continue and will continue to work as normal Triple zero calls. So Triple zero calls follow a different different settings in our network and therefore they were not impacted in the same way. We have seen a small number of reports that we are investigating, and as part of our standard process, which has been operating through the night and through this morning, we conduct welfare checks when any call to Triple zero fails, and we've been doing this. We do ask customers not to test and try out Triple zero unless you need to. We don't yet know the root cause. We are investigating that urgently and we'll provide updates as soon as we get more information about the root cause.
00:30:44
Speaker 2: All right, Michael Ackland, the Telstra CEO, don't yet know the root cause of the issue. Triple zero welfare checks have been made. Don't test it. Call if you have to, as you would with any emergency, and keep trying because depends how you call is routed through the system, you may or may not get through. But they're working on it. Ninety percent have been restored as you heard him say, so more to come when they work out what has caused this. But I do like my idea which popped into my head as I was talking out loud about twenty minutes ago. If you've more than one of you live in a house, if you're a household, a family, whatever might pay, mightn't it to split your phones between different the three different major providers. I mean, there's lots of subsidiaries if you like separate individual companies. I'm thinking Boost, for instance, which uses Telstra, a Mason which uses Origin, Virgin I think, which uses Votaphone, but it's still Votaphone, Telstra or Optus, so it doesn't really matter. Just make sure you're on have different phones with different providers. It's pointless being on Telstra Direct and also then getting Boost, which uses so Telstra network. It won't work, just the same as the Telstraphone won't work. But if you have a phone with a Telstra network, a Votera phone network, or an Optus network two or three or more, then one of you is going to get through in the family, and that's kind of important. I suspect we've got a phone to use all right, just gone fourteen to ten on five double A. Let us know about how it's going. NBN still working, says Tim. People can change their settings to use the NBN as their carrier make calls all right. Regarding migration, spoke about this earlier with the Master Builders, Andrew says, I have my own business as painter and decorator. I'm currently in the process of applying for my brother in law as a skilled migrant. He's a patent overseas, has been for many years, skilled and knowledgeable. We've done everything we can now just waiting on an immigration to review process and approve the visa we applied two months ago. Hopefully, very soon we will get good news. We used an immigration agent to help with the process. Painting and decorating recognized as a high demand trade for migrants. Thank you, Andrew, good luck with that. On petrol pricing, Darren says refuel be nice to understand why we on the York Peninsula, say Kadena, paying one dollar eighty two transport is not the reason, as we've never been anywhere twenty to thirty cents a leader more. In fact, go back a year or two. We had cheaper fuel than Adelaide. Yeah, Darren, that's certainly true. And I just wonder somebody made the point. I read a similar text last week from somebody in your region, somebody from Kadena, I reckon and they said that the response came back, it's because you don't have and you can tell me if you do or don't without me checking on a petrol app. But you don't have independence. Too many independents on the York Peninsula, like a Liberty or one of the others mobile X or whatever, And as a result, you're paying more because you've got the big boys who are setting the prices. I wonder if that's the reason, not enough independence, Because you go into Piri, you look at Pierre's price, which is about a half hour drive from Butte, it is a tad cheaper, more competition. I wonder if that's why. We'll take a quick break on five double A as Judith texts through, just shows how vulnerable we all are to technology. Yes, thank you for that. Twelve to ten on five double A.
00:34:27
Speaker 1: Five Double A Mornings with Matthew Pantellis.
00:34:31
Speaker 2: Nine minutes to ten, having a look at the stock market this morning, the all lords down ninety seven ASX two hundred down ninety six, the down Jones down one hundred and thirty nasdak down three O two Brent crude seventy five US dollars a barrel, West Texas Oil seventy two US a barrel gold four thousand and ninety nine. Announce, that's down a little bit and the Aussie dollar steady at sixty nine US cents. All right, let's have a chat about well. Perhaps one of the factors in t having down stock markets this morning, the US has fired missiles into Iran as a result of Iran apparently targeting ships in the straight up MUDs. Michael Schubridge, Director of Strategic Analysis Australia on the line, Michael, good morning. This rattles on, doesn't it.
00:35:18
Speaker 5: Yeah, it sure does.
00:35:20
Speaker 12: Yeah.
00:35:20
Speaker 13: So it looks like what is driving this is Iran is trying to control where the ships go through the strait. They've got a channel open closer to them and they want these ships to coordinate with them, which is all part of them getting a fee. And the Americans are trying to get the Amani side of the strait used without the Iranians controlling it, and the Iranians are attacking the ships.
00:35:49
Speaker 2: All right, So could this escalate potentially?
00:35:54
Speaker 13: Yes, it could because well, it already has a little bit because the American has been striking Iranian targets close to the Strait and the US government has reimposed those sanctions on sale of Iranian oils.
00:36:11
Speaker 2: Where does that leave the ceasefire? Then the agreement?
00:36:15
Speaker 13: I think it's still partially in place, because this is another round of what we saw last week, But it really shows the agreement as so many holes in it, And fundamental is the Strait of whom was going to be open for free navigation or is it going to be controlled in the future by Iran.
00:36:39
Speaker 2: It is a nightmare for America for Donald Trump, particularly as the US government heads into midterm elections in November. He now want this. I wonder if he's ruining starting this in the first place, because he would want this cleared up as quickly as possible, wouldn't he.
00:36:54
Speaker 13: Yeah, I think you're right, and I think he sees he's in a bit of a cul de sac, is stuck, and what he thought was the end in sight just keeps folding back in on itself.
00:37:09
Speaker 2: Iran have been so good over decades in stretching out these conflicts, haven't they They kind of just you know, are dragged to a finish line and then step back a few steps and on that goes. It's no issue has ever been resolved, I reckon in the last forty or so years since the Shave was deposed.
00:37:30
Speaker 10: Yeah.
00:37:31
Speaker 13: Look, I think that's an insightful point. They slow roll every negotiation and eke out every advantage that they can and they see time as on their side because they expect democratic governments and populations to lose patients. And they've been right pretty much every time.
00:37:50
Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, we'll see where this ends up. Look, the other issue is China firing missiles into the Pacific, and this is in It seems to be in response to Anthony Alberinzi's visit to the island nations off shore.
00:38:06
Speaker 13: Well, I don't know that it was a direct response, but it kind of underlines the point of why the Australian government and regional partners are worried about regional security. You know, So Fiji and Australia sign a defense treaty and the same day China fires a nuclear capable missile into the South Pacific, which is meant to be a nuclear free zone, So it does kind of make the point.
00:38:33
Speaker 2: Again muscle flexing or is there a more serious intent.
00:38:39
Speaker 13: I think it's symbolic, but it's also about showing China is developing a more sophisticated and larger volume nuclear capability. So it looks like these are new ballistic missiles that it can fire from its ballistic missile submarines, and it's built the whole lot of other nuclear weapons at Pace two, including silos to put them in well.
00:39:06
Speaker 2: And all of it. You know, if they're fired from nuclear submarines, and if they're stealthy, we would have no idea where they are. And that's the whole point of a good submarine. So potentially all of Australia's at risk, is it not?
00:39:19
Speaker 13: Yes, Well, if this is the new missile to JL three, it's got about a ten thousand kilometer rang so even if it was fired from mainland China, it could reach Sydney.
00:39:29
Speaker 2: Goodness, all right, that's concerning where's this going to end up?
00:39:36
Speaker 13: Well, tell you what it would be nice if, as Australia signs all these regional security deals, if our military had at least some capacity to protect parts of Australia and population centers from long range missile attack and at the moment that's just not true.
00:39:51
Speaker 2: No, We've got a few packs of rubber bands we can fire back, I reckon. So we need to ramp up spending obviously, then that's what you're saying, Well, we.
00:40:00
Speaker 13: Need to spend on the right things. I mean, we're spending sixty four billion dollars this year and we're not getting effective missile defense for that. So you know, the government tells us that geography is no longer a protection for us. We'll see these long range missiles from China, but our government doesn't have a plan to defend us.
00:40:19
Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, Well that's that's the key issue of defense spending and that's that's where that begins. Michael, thank you for your time this morning. Thanks Michael schubridch Director of Strategic Analysis Australia. On some of the events around the world. OK. Three to ten on five Double A news is coming up more on the Telstra outage in the next half hour. We'll also meet Jim Jeffries, who's playing at the THEBBI this weekend, comedian touring Adelaide, so we'll have a chat about those issues and in the half hour to follow the sheep industry event. In fact, it'll be the world's premier sheep industry event happening in Adelaide. Will tell you about that coming up in the next hour or two.
00:41:02
Speaker 1: Five Double A Mornings with Matthew Pantellis.
00:41:07
Speaker 2: Seven past ten on five Double A coming up shortly about ten minutes or so, or within that we'll be talking to r MIT on the issue of the Telstra outage this morning. In fact, Mark Gregory from the School of Engineering Police have put out a statement in the last few minutes a Telstra outage occurring this morning still currently affecting customers nationwide, impacting eligibility to make phone calls, which may also include calls to triple zero from Telstra services. Telstra report ninety percent of calls and data now flowing successfully across the network. But if you are in an emergency and cannot contact emergency services, seek an alternate mobile phone, seek immediate assistance from neighbors, local emergency services, or community support networks, and you can visit Telstra website for updates. Telstra dot com dot Au slash outages to as Telstra work to restore services Telstra dot com dot Au slash outages. If you're Telstra at mobile service is working of course, If not, keep listening. We'll bring you up to date and we'll talk about Telster again shortly this weekend. I think it's this weekend, isn't it. Jim Jeffries is in town and performing at the THEBBI Theater. Jim Jeffries, good.
00:42:26
Speaker 14: Morning, Oho mate, Thanks for having me.
00:42:28
Speaker 2: No worries. Tell me about the Son of a Carpenter tour.
00:42:33
Speaker 14: Well, it's just, you know, we've got some great opening acts We've got I get up afterwards and do about an hour and a half of stand up comedy and it's just it's a tour I've been doing for about six months now that I've done across Europe for the UK New Zealand and it's ready to go and this is sort of its last to rab before I want to record it. So it's it's really sharp, it's really good. But I can never really tell when I get asked that question, it's just going to be jokes, mate, you know what I mean. There's a few I don't want to give any of them away. I want to have the element of surprise.
00:43:10
Speaker 2: Still fair enough. All right, So you've taken this around the world and obviously to a claim, so you must be doing it right.
00:43:16
Speaker 14: I am doing okay, I'm doing okay. Now this is this is one of my favorite sets that I've ever had. I think I think it's a lot of fun.
00:43:25
Speaker 2: Yeah, why is that? Why do you think it's the best set? It's an experience. Now you're better at writing jokes, what is it?
00:43:31
Speaker 14: There's a little bit of experience, a little bit better at writing jokes. But also you get to a stage where you're out with my career, where people know who you are, they know what they're going to come and see. So I'm really trying to do a show that's strictly for the fans and not trying to please everybody else. And often when you're doing things on TV or something, you're trying to please a broader audience. I'm trying to please the people who have paid for the ticket. It's a lot of people always ask they go, who's your favorite comic comedian? And the real answer is me.
00:44:03
Speaker 15: I'm my favorite.
00:44:04
Speaker 14: Comedian, and all comedians should say that because I'm literally telling the jokes I want to hear. I know I'm not the best comedian in the world. I understand that, but for my tastes, I'm awesome.
00:44:15
Speaker 2: Fair enough. What how do you know something's funny though? I mean, you're writing a joke. If it's funny to you, is it going to be funny or you know? Do you have a little bit of a skew on that?
00:44:26
Speaker 14: That's I know if it's going to be If it's funny to me, it's going to be funny to them. I just I just just know that. And also you get the instant gratification when you tell the joke in funny audience whether they laugh, and you'll know within a ten to a second whether a joke works or not. And if it doesn't work, then it doesn't. You know, maybe you'll give it one more outing and try to rephrase it a bit different, and then if it works slightly better. You normally give it two or three goes, and if it doesn't work, you just throw it in the bin and.
00:44:56
Speaker 15: You move on.
00:44:57
Speaker 2: Fair enough. The the fact that you're up there on stage the comedians memorize the routine is that how it works. You got cheap notes on the floor, What do you do?
00:45:08
Speaker 14: I don't have any I Actually last night I had a moment where my brain went blank and I couldn't think of anything to say. And that happens about three That happened about three times a year, and it's only it was only for about eight seconds. But I don't know if the audience to it, but I knew it was happening. Some comics keep a little bit of paper, like I know, like comics to do one line is. Often they'll have a little screen at the bottom because one line is there's so many of them to go through and it's hard to tell. Have I told that joke? Already repeating myself or whatever? Me personally, I just get up and sort of free flow. No, two shows are exactly the same. All the routines are going to be there, but the order sometimes changes up little bits and pieces like that. I find it keeps it a bit more fresh, and I can sort of move in the moment where if I had like a green teller prompting me that, I'd be very rigid and stuck for that.
00:46:03
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, eight seconds, that's a lifetime, isn't it. On stage? It is on radio when there's a gap, So on stage it'll probably be two lifetimes.
00:46:10
Speaker 14: I just did. I just wandered back to get my drink and went anyway, you've got to live your life and a sense of patch phrases until my brain clicked.
00:46:19
Speaker 15: Back into gear.
00:46:20
Speaker 2: There you go. We've sent you on TV the One Percent? What else? What's up next after this tour? What are you planning on?
00:46:27
Speaker 14: Hopefully we'll record some more One Percent club. We haven't recorded that yet, so hopefully we get more of them. I'd like to do a bit more acting if those jobs come to me. And you know, I always say yes to everything. You know, the further I get my career. I don't give up on any opportunity, So whatever opportunity comes me away, I'll have a crack.
00:46:48
Speaker 2: Okay, Well that's that's good. That's the way to do it. And you never know what the next door opens and holds for you, do you?
00:46:54
Speaker 14: Except for morning radio? I'm not up for that too early. No gay's any radio art. Me just say that and they go, Maybe we can get him to play the door the radio station.
00:47:04
Speaker 15: I'm not doing it.
00:47:05
Speaker 2: Mid dawn's maybe too late. I can do drive com Okay, all right, we'll keep it in mind. Jim, great meeting you, here. Hope it goes well in Adelaide for you on the weekend.
00:47:14
Speaker 14: Thanks for having me man, I appreciate.
00:47:16
Speaker 2: Good on you. Jim Jeffries comedian and you can catch them at the THEBBI this weekend. The Son of Carpenter Australia tour and tickets available at ticke Tech called TEG Live tg Jim Jeffries dot com. You'll get all details there. Alrighty David is on the line from Clemseig on the chat we had earlier on trades and migrants, can I David, Oh.
00:47:37
Speaker 9: Hello Matthew Yell, look, I get pick the people bagging the migrants, because without the migrants, Australia's in serious troubles. I mean, I've just built a new house and ninety percent of the trades are all oversea. Come oversea. I used to chat with them, talk to them. They're all floats. They work hard, they work, you know, on hours, they do everything. And then people are bagging the uber drivers or most of those Uber drivers are students studying medicine and like engineering at university. They're not some dumbbo person just coming here to drive an Uber and you know, I'm at a noise when people pick on them, because without them, we're in big trouble. Do you go to a hospital or anywhere, or an age care home, who are all the workers? They're all Indian, Middle East or Filipinos.
00:48:25
Speaker 14: You know.
00:48:26
Speaker 9: So I'm seventy years old and you know the old baby boomers are mostly your audience should grow up and realize without them, we're in big trouble because there's no one to look after you.
00:48:38
Speaker 2: So you're saying it comes down to Mellie's comment on who's going to wipe your bum?
00:48:43
Speaker 9: Yeah, exactly, all right. You know that you shouldn't discount them because Australia wouldn't exist at the moment. I mean you might pick on them saying they're causing all the housing crisis. I don't really think they are because most of the migrants trade tradees are mostly Irants. Well, without them, you can't build any house.
00:49:03
Speaker 2: Well it's catch twenty two though, isn't it. I mean, if we didn't have migration, we probably wouldn't have a housing crisis. If we didn't have migration, we wouldn't have some of the people to do the things you've talked about, including build the homes exactly and.
00:49:16
Speaker 9: If you don't go look with another look. We had a very small population, they said, Australia had to, you know, multiply. Now we're not multiplying on our own because our kids are having one kid if they're lucky. So without migrants, you're not the population going backwards. If the population goes backwards, the economy goes backwards as well. And people forget that.
00:49:38
Speaker 2: Do you reckon we should bring back the baby bonus because that did help lift the birth rate for a while.
00:49:46
Speaker 9: I don't think so really, because the baby bonus really, you know, a lot of the down and out sort of people use it as a form of getting a quick bit of cash. Sure, I don't think it really attracted babies in the right area.
00:50:01
Speaker 2: Well I don't know. I mean it lifted the birth rate. That was the intent. So it succeeded in that, and that was the whole deal. We need more people in the country, home grown, preferably, rather than letting people flood in as we have without the means of support. Necessarily all for migration. And if we didn't have migration, the soccer whos wouldn't make it as far as they do in the World Cup. For goodness, sake, but we'd still be eating what meat and three veg without all the other wonderful culinary delights that have been introduced into Australia in the last seventy years. But it needs to be controlled. There have to be gates on the borders to ensure people come in in an orderly way, not just flood. In sixteen past ten on five double A eight double two three double O double o's the number. We'll go back to Telstrom where they're at right after these.
00:50:56
Speaker 1: Were five double A Mornings with Matthew Pantellus.
00:51:03
Speaker 2: Well, we've heard from Telstra CEO Michael Ackland this morning on the issues that they've faced. They've apologized. Michael Ackland hands the CEO, says about ninety percent of services now operating again. Tens of thousands of people woke unable to make calls. The outage wreaking havoc for business and commuters, particularly into State where trains were affected in Victoria. The issue also left some people unable to make payments due to f post systems being knocked out. Michael Ackland, the CEO, saying there's nothing to suggest it was the result of malicious activity, but they're still getting to the bottom of what exactly caused the problem.
00:51:41
Speaker 11: We don't yet know the root cause. We are investigating that urgently and we'll provide updates as soon as we get more information about the root cause.
00:51:51
Speaker 2: He's apologized to the thousands of affected customers unable to make calls or in some cases payments, and says they've made the necessary checks amid report of a small number of incidents where triple zero calls may have failed.
00:52:05
Speaker 11: Out of our standard process which has been operating through the night and through this morning. We conduct welfare checks when any call to triple zero fails, and we've been doing this.
00:52:17
Speaker 2: And we were hoping to speak to Associate Professor Mark Gregory from r MIT so it could telecommunications expert on this, but what do you know, The calls aren't getting through, so he must be in the ten percent ten percent of people affected. But anyway, as soon as we get him, we'll try and get him on regarding where to next for Telstra, who is still investigating what the net cause are or the root cause of this has been certainly an issue, but yes, Telstra, absolute nightmare for my producer Jesse this morning, who made so many calls to so many people and just couldn't get through. As he says, it seems like almost half the country didn't have a telephone this morning. Yes, that's probably about right. Got to diversify it, I'll say it again, like, if there's more than a couple of you in a family sort of situation, be on different and this includes me. We're all with voter fine, but it just makes sense after today jump on different services because why wouldn't you in cases an outage? Ken at Ingle Farm, Hello, Ken.
00:53:21
Speaker 6: Good Matt, great show. Yeah, no worries. Yeah, there's got a couple of points. But the first one is about the waste that's going on here in Adelaide, right in the schools and probably all the other places. I mean you're talking about at the end of each year, apparently if they don't and which has been going on for thirty years, you know, and probably longer, they get a lot of money from the government, right all the schools all round and probably a lot of other places that we don't know about. If they don't spend that money, right, they're told the government goes back into the government coppers to boost there.
00:54:04
Speaker 16: You know.
00:54:04
Speaker 6: Oh yeah, we've got this much money now, right, But that's another lie that the government's telling us. But the point is, i've seen photo copy is I've seen you know, just all imagine imagine everything that school can use, right, even the woodwork.
00:54:20
Speaker 8: Right.
00:54:21
Speaker 6: And I said to the bloke where does all the wood go? This retitled there's in a landfill? Mate? Where's all the electronic stuff go? Because I had some in my hand, I didn't know where to put it. I thought, I'm going to throw that into the landfill.
00:54:36
Speaker 2: Well a lot to recycle it. So I don't know. I think, you know, if you've got people throwing it into landfill, i'd suggest they'd be the exception, not the rule.
00:54:45
Speaker 6: Now, mate, will you be quite surprised. I think there's going to have to be. Oh yeah, I'm serious, mate, serious, right, I said, I work in a schoolmate, I see it every day. Right, And that's not the act that I'm talking about every school in South Australia.
00:55:00
Speaker 2: Yeah, I reckon that. As I said, Ken, I think that's the exception, not the rule. Most are pretty I'm sure these days considerate of how they dispose of all of that. I mean schools of big recycling programs and all the rest and they teach this whole classrooms, lessons set aside on recycling and all of that. I doubt they're just chucking stuff away. Thank you for the call. Twenty five past ten on five double A. Coming up after the news headlines, we'll be talking about a premier sheep industry event happening in Adelaide. Looking forward to finding out some details on that. Still trying to get hold of our Telstra expert at a r MIT, whose phone is obviously not working this morning. Let's talk about the established opening up the established home market, the first homeowners. This is a text from Colin who says, with first homeowner grant, stamp, duty exemptions, etc. Surely it's a case of supply and demand. It won't force up housing prices in the long term. Supply of available housing is the issue. Isn't that none of this new builds makes any sense at the moment. Trades will still be engaged with established dwellings, re upgrades and renovations. Alrighty, these migrant trades are not all qualified. They pay for their qualifications. I know this for a fact. This person says no name on this. I would hate to get a new house right now. The quality isn't there. They don't do what they're supposed to and take shortcuts. Alrighty Bell says, no one's bagging migrants. I'm a child and grandchild of migrants though. Through the Snowy Mountain Scheme immigration plan, what we're saying is we need to train our kids first, then fill in the gaps that are needed. Plenty abled people on welfare we can train and retrain as well. Thank you for that. Antonette says, when I get old and can't look after myself, I'd rather die than be looked after. And I'm not going into a nursing home, Nantoinette, thank you. Does a Telstra outage make a difference for Internet bank king? Cash is king, says Kathy. Yep, yeah. You can't beat cash when the f pos is down, can you. And for those businesses that say, oh we're f POS only, you're kicking your own goal there. I reckon it's all very well when it's all working and fine, and people have got card facilities on them so they've got a card as opposed to just cash only. But there are times I find myself just with cash in my pocket and that works. And if you don't want the cash. Well, you don't get the business obviously, why would you decide not to take cash. It's still legal for goodness sake, Marty says Matthew. With this space saucer they say landed in Roswell. Okay, Today is the anniversary nineteen forty seven of the first reports of an alleged spacecraft coming down at Roswell. As I said earlier, So you know, aliens smart enough to fly billions of light years across the Solar System, across the universe and then don't know where the brakes are when they get to worth as If anyway, who's to say it's not a space probe that's been launched from the other side of the universe, similar to the space probe named the Voyager we sent in the nineties. It's traveled billions of kilometres sat landed on a planet that was inhabited. It's a possibility, I guess so, Marty, I guess it is. I'll give you that one. But you know, aliens crash landing at Roswell themselves. If that craft was really from out of space, I'd certainly buy the weather balloon story that they were out cold war. They're trying to you know, spy on the Russians or whatever. Certainly by that, but space aliens coming here and forgetting how to stop their craft. I don't buy that one. But yeah, what you say is a possibility. I won't rule that out. That's as far as my cynicism goes on aliens. Patrick says, I don't like it when things go wrong, but it happens. I've always other than one month been with Telstra. What happened in that month, we rubbish them when something goes wrong. As a carry I'll stay with them till the time comes. Starlink is good, but are there any without faults? God on your Patrick, Thank you. Ten twenty nine on five Double A. News headlines are coming up, and then we'll find out a big meat industry or sheep industry event. Thinking of a Euros I guess, and that's happening in Adelaide. We'll talk about that next on five Double.
00:59:34
Speaker 1: A, five Double A Mornings with Matthew Pantellis.
00:59:42
Speaker 2: Twenty seven to eleven on five Double A, let's talk lamb lamb. Who doesn't like a good euros or leg of lamb? Give up that date with Tom Cruise, whatever the case may be. There is a big event on in Adelaide lam X twenty six. It's called It's brought some fifteen hundred producers and industry delegates here from across Australia across the world. Tim Lee is co founder of Margre Lamb. We'll find out about that. Tim, good morning, thanks for coming in. Thank you having me tell me a little bit about lam X twenty six. Look. Lam X twenty six every two years Australia runs the biggest LAMB program in the world. People from all around the world come and speak. It's an industry event, it's a learning event, it's a great opportunity to network. And yeah, I'm representing Margaret Lamb down here for this for this great four days. So I imagine the conference will look at what the whole you know, what improvements can be made to breeding sheep to whether it's for wool or food, and the pressures growers are under well. Absolutely, it's it's at the forefront of innovation and there's some amazing guest speakers down here. So there's people from all around the world. There's industry that are taking the game forward like this sheep industry has subsided in Australia and New Zealand and globally, and we need young people to get into sheep breeding and understand the values of it and it's it's it's programs like lammes that are very very important to the industry and to the growth of the sheep industry around the world. Why has it subsided? What are the reasons? There's multiple reasons. Drought throughout the Australia has has subsided numbers, but policy in Western Australia with the live sheep experts has changed the numbers and definitely labor as well. So if we look at the labor and the cost of production in sheep, young young guys in particular want to drive tractors, and young girls they don't. They don't want to they don't want to play with sheep. So sheep in general have got a high labor component and they haven't been as sexy as cattle and burning diesel. Are sheep smart? I believe they are sort of always never ceases to amaze you when a sheep can outsmart you. Okay, I know cows are smart. I've got personal expit with a friend who had a cow come to it was like Lassie, a cow had given birth to a calf and came to the door when the calf was in trouble, couldn't breathe, and sort of mood at the door till somebody came and kept looking back to make sure they were following. The people were following. So cows are smart, right, So I'm just wonder if sheep are in that sort of absolutely, yes, okay, So what do we have more of in this country? Is it sheep for wool or sheep for food? Look, at this stage, it's probably most of the sheep in this country would be seen as dull purpose. But where I come from is that lamb hasn't had a lot of innovation over the last thirty to fifty years. And my business partner, Graham Gilmour and his family set out twenty odd years ago and Graham was in South America and saw a breedersh sheep with hair and he said, look, yes, hair wool not wool. And he said, look, this is the fewture of sheep production, a little mini cow as such for sheep. And he tried his best to bring that sheep to Australia with no success. Really yeah, and you fast forward, why not he wasn't able to import that sheep, so very much like the Adam and ebe eve Ethos, he put four breeds of sheep together, three of which he had on his own farm. And you fast forward to where we are now and there's a breedersh sheep called the Australian White that was created on his farms. And that Australian White is the British sheep that basically powers our brand, which is Margaret Lamb, which is owning the new category of innovation in this country and around the world, which is Lamb on another level, Lamb with innovation. And I'd love to talk to you more about it. Well, let's find out about Margaret Lamb then. So, I mean it's built as the wagu of Lamb, a wagon's beef obviously, but sure Lamb. So what makes it so special? So the thing that makes Margaret so specially is is that this British the Australian White, has an extremely low melting point. So when you've eaten the Sunday roast, and we have for generations, and you have that concealing fat, that high level of fat that sits in the dish that you feel on the top of your palate, that waxy feel. That's one of the things that's turned so many people off lamb. At a scene wag you and seen beef and seen pork and chicken go streets ahead of lamb, Margaret. Lambs have a melting point of below your body temperature, so the fat melts at twenty eight to thirty five degrees, so most lamb will melt above forty degrees. So the biggest difference that a consumer feels is that really clean palate once they've finished eating margra, So that's probably the number one. And then the second to that is that because the sheep has hair and it doesn't have wool, it doesn't have that gamy, that high lannel and approach to it. So it's very approachable for many people. So it's got a definite ability to appeal to many more people, especially younger people that probably have been turned off by lamb in the past. Okay, I just don't understand that. And coming from a Greek background, lamb it is so good. Okay, Well, I'm gets fascinated with this hairless well, this hair woollless sheep. Is it a sheep if it doesn't have wool? I mean absolutely. This is what we've seen in every industry is costs going through the roof. Right, so every cost that we've got in our family homes has gone through the roof. In particular for us, is the cost of production in sheep, and so the Australian white sheep actually being a haad sheep and not wool sheep, where we're probably at a state where where somewhere between twenty five and thirty dollars ahead better off for head for the sense that we're not using chemicals, we're not shearing the animals, we're not treating them for flies. So there's and then the labor component to it as well. So labor in this country being so expensive, we were able to avoid that almost being like mini cattle. Okay, how hairy these hairy sheep are? They fully haired like a little polar bear like think gold think labrador. Yeah, okay, not not English sheep, not English seat.
01:06:10
Speaker 17: Yeah.
01:06:10
Speaker 2: So these animals shed their their heir rather than shed their wool, which is very unique. How about that? Are there many species of hairy sheep? Look, there's more and more so that the sharded sheep industry is definitely growing. But the Australian White's very unique in the sense that is a haired sheep. It's not a shedding wool sheep. Okay, is it widely available? Margaret meat Margaret Margaret program is fairly fairly high end, so you to eat Margaret, you'll need to be at at a luxury restaurant or a high end restaurant here in South Australia started right exactly the same thing. So so you know Jake Kelly at at Oka, Scott Huggins at McGill State, those guys have been tremendously supportive of our program over the last three years. So we're a startup Australian brand Margaret Lamb and one of our great partnerships has been with Quorn, So the last three years we've been a sole supplier of Lamb to quantas first Class and Business Class. And we've actually just finished running a documentary on Margre the thirty minute documentary that's available on our YouTube or on our social media that tells our story. So consumers have been able to eat Margra in the aircraft and also watch our story, which has really helped us in terms of elevating and telling a story about innovation and an Australian business that's challenging the status quo. How long before it's available at Foodland and Woolies? A look, I don't think it will be available in food and Woolies. I think we need to identify that we were trying to create a new category in lamb and elevate lamb to another level. Okay. Best way of cooking lamb? Is it over a spit, over a weber? Is it just in the oven as a roast? What's look? I think on a Margar Margaret program on fire in the oven where the fat is rendered cooked to sort of fifty three to fifty five degrees internally and let to rest and slice. I don't think you can beat that. Okay. And the conference underway at the moment for the next few days, it is Lamby. It is Matthew. Yeah, shepherding people through. Look, I'm looking forward to catching up with people this afternoon. And yeah, it's just great to get together. It's an important thing to get off farms and for industry to connect. I imagine too. I mean the chat would almost be fascinating in terms of you'd be talking about how many head of lamb sheep you have and the different verities and the feed all of that, the climate, there'd be a lot of things under discussion. Oh absolutely absolutely, And this Australian sheep industry is roaring at the moment. So we've seen incredibly great pricing on farm and it's a great time to be in the sheep industry. And yeah, I think it's a fantastic thing to see so many young people here too, So walking around the halls, the age demographics, seeing young people here such an important thing. We need to inspire that next generation. New South Wales that's where your base. Yeah, yeah, I am based in New South Wales. Climate there and conditions. How's it been. Look, we've been very blessed with fantastic where the since sort of March, many parts of northern New South Wales have experienced in a very difficult time, very much similar to what happened here in South Australia last year. But I think the holes were starting to fill in and there's a lot of optimism in the protein market most definitely. I know up north, the far North here in the say well, we've had a lot of rain across the top of our state and reports from farmers there on big stations say they've now got two years worth of feed, which is amazing, amazing, it's amazing, So hopefully you get some of that over your way. That's exactly right. Yeah, all right, terrific, lovely meeting you, Tim. I appreciate you coming in and here for the lamme X twenty six isn't at the convention Center. It's at the Adelaide Convention Citing. Can anyone drop in over the next few days. I'm pretty sure you can. You'll obviously have to register for the day. So today's probably the bigges day if they were to go along and tomorrow. It finishes mid afternoon tomorrow. But yeah, you'll see many a cocky floating around pubs, so make sure if you're listing and you run into a bloke or a woman that looks like she's from the bush sagaday. Yeah. Absolutely, And look at the convention center, does a great range of food in there. Lamb on the menu, do you know Lamb's on the menu Adelaide Convention Center. One of Margaret's good clients. Really. Yeah, So I'll give a shout out to Aldos meets Michael, who has been our distribution partner here in South Australia. He does a terrific job. Okay, so he might be the contact. He's the contact in the essay. All right, So if you want some LAMB maybe give them a call. So Margaret Lamb try it out. Good on you, Tim, Thank you for coming in. Tim Lee, co founder Margaret Lamb here for the world's premier sheep industry event happening in Adelaide now. It's called Lamb X twenty six. And hey, if you're interested in sheep, head over to the convention center over the next few days.
01:10:58
Speaker 1: Five A mornings Matthew Pantellus.
01:11:10
Speaker 2: Thirteen minutes to eleven or five double a partly cloud. It's the outlook today, they got that right, seventeen as a top. It will be sunny tomorrow. Currently in the city fourteen point five. What have we been up to today? Is about as warm as it's been all day fourteen point five, just slightly warmer about an hour ago fourteen point eight. You wouldn't know the difference. I suspect. All right, we have two tickets to give away to somebody in the next hour, presumably the next hour. Anyway, it might be you this hour. If you call through, you never know with a comment to make on some of the things we've been talking about or your own topic. We have double passed to into the Woods at Her Majesty's Theater late August for you to go along to and we'll be giving that away at some stage before midday. To a lucky caller to the program, the Telstra out and hoping still to get through to Mark Gregory at the r MIT School of Engineering, his phone was out. Wonder why but to Telstra saying ninety percent of calls and data restored. They've been making welfare checks and they don't have a root cause as to what caused the outage across the country that resulted in quite a bit of disruption, particularly interstate with rail services being out. I think in Victoria. I'm not sure about New South Wales as well, but certainly in Victoria where trains couldn't run for whatever reason. Let's have a chat with Associate Professor Mark Gregory, telecommunications expert at RMIT in Melbourne. Morning, Mark, how are you?
01:12:39
Speaker 17: Yeah, good morning, so you'd.
01:12:40
Speaker 2: Be aware of what Telstra CEO Michael Ackland had to say. Now ninety percent resolve, no root cause as yet, but ge, you know We've seen a bit of this from different telcos in the last few years, and it seems while we love technology, we are captive to it.
01:12:58
Speaker 16: Oh.
01:12:58
Speaker 17: Most certainly, a couple of things that we have learned from the many outages I've had over the last few years. The first thing is that some hand sets will try and reconnect, others won't, and so customers should turn their phones off, power them back on again and that may help connect back into the network. We've also learnt this is an intermittent fault, so it's someone tried to make a call not being able to make the call, that they should try and call again in in a minute or two and it's most likely that they'll get through.
01:13:38
Speaker 2: Telstra saying it doesn't appear to be malicious, But you know, gee, we are at the risk of hackers, aren't we at their pleasure so to speak? In terms of this sort of thing happening. Whether this was ultimately that or not, there's certainly a bit of that going on well right around the world, whether it's telcodes or banks or whatever.
01:14:01
Speaker 17: Oh, most certainly, in this particular case, it doesn't appear to be anything malicious. It is from what we were told time synchronization. So in the network, the calls are as, say, come in a distributed across the core network to different systems, which tells you they have core network systems in Sydney and Melbourne, so the calls will be distributed between the two different areas. The time synchronization is critical to ensure that the systems will taught to each other in the correct way. And they're saying that there's been a fault in the time synchronization subsystems, and so that means that the call may work, it may not work, and so that subsystem has probably been affected by a software update, or it could have been one particular part of the subsystem has failed.
01:15:03
Speaker 2: The only way around it, it seems unless it's that widespread that all tourcos are effected. That I've sort of had this brain bubble this morning where as I've been on air that it just makes sense that if there's more than one person in a household, a family of you know, three, four, five, whatever, that you're each of you has a phone, somebody with tells to somebody with Votera phone, somebody with Optus or one of their associated companies, that sort of sponge off those services whatever the right term is, use those services, rent them, piggyback on them. Then you'll if one goes out, at least two other phones will be working well.
01:15:40
Speaker 17: Merest certainly that's one idea. And of course, look, if telecommunications wasn't so expensive in Australia, you would also recommend that people keep their andline as the backup, you know, but telecommunications is very expensive here and so therefore people have been getting rid of their airdlines to save on cost. The other key thing to do is, of course keep cashing your wallet because you've already about how many businesses have been affected across Australia, and studies have found that you're talking hasn't or more dollars per hour that a small business will lose, you know, through loss of business during a telecom addit.
01:16:22
Speaker 2: Just repeat that figure you just cut out for a second.
01:16:25
Speaker 17: How much about four thousand dollars an hour?
01:16:28
Speaker 8: Wow?
01:16:29
Speaker 17: And that's on average, right, I mean, you know, if you're trying to close a deal on a caravan or a bouch or something in the amount lost would be far high. But if you're a cafe that's reliant upon the morning coffee business, you potentially could lose a whole day's taking a small business. That's devastating.
01:16:53
Speaker 2: Absolutely. I mean that's your week's rent for a start, isn't it really four grand?
01:16:56
Speaker 8: No?
01:16:57
Speaker 17: Oh, absolutely, it can be devastating. Unfortunately, there's no compensation for this type of adage other than you know, the percentage of connectivity that you've lost. You could claim that, but in terms of business claims, there's no nothing in the legislation that allows you to do that.
01:17:19
Speaker 2: All right, So where to now for Telstra? I mean, they'd be looking to ensure, as was with up to some years ago, they'd be looking to ensure that this never happens again.
01:17:29
Speaker 17: Look, I mean there was a voter phone outage a couple of weeks ago. It was similar to this, and you know, we don't see anything happening.
01:17:39
Speaker 6: You know.
01:17:40
Speaker 17: The Minister reacted to know a number of these atages put in a regulation requiring them to tell us on their average page what's going on, what you know, and keep the information live, similar to what happened with votaphone. A couple of weeks ago. I went on to the Telstra atage page and I got an er message saying we can't talk to the systems that we need to talk to to be able to tell you if there's an outage.
01:18:05
Speaker 2: But and this is the thing, you almost need a different sort of setup, don't you, because if you've got to tell straphone and there's an outage page, you can't get to it anyway.
01:18:13
Speaker 17: Well that's right, but you know, in this case, Telstra is non compliant with the regulations. The question is whether the chelco's mate, the ACMA, is going to find Telstra. What action are they going to take? Are they going to require an independent investigation? They didn't with votaphone a few weeks ago. Are we going to just hear crickets from the ACM ay like we've been hearing recently.
01:18:35
Speaker 2: Interesting that votaphone outage. I'm with votaphone. I didn't notice it. Was it widespread? Was it across the country?
01:18:41
Speaker 17: It was very widespread? Really and the game. Yeah again, sometimes you can be lucky and not affected by one of these outages.
01:18:49
Speaker 2: Didn't notice the thing so just a couple of weeks ago, yeah yeah, well okay, well totally missed that. But all right there. We are appreciate your time this morning. Mark, Thank you, please, Associate Professor at r MIT, Mark Gregory Telecommunications experties in the engineering field, and obviously Telstra, well, they're working through it, trying to find out exactly what happened. No root cause that they know of, but time synchronization issue. Something went wrong somewhere, but ninety percent of the system is back. Telstra has said it doesn't believe it's malicious and they've been making welfare calls to anyone who tried calling Triple zero. Largely unaffected was Triple zero. Mike Lacklan's saying. This is from Telstra saying they'll follow up in a handful of cases where that wasn't the case. But there we go, all right, Telstra the latest tell code to be affected by an outage. Anyone with votaphone noticed a couple of weeks ago. I certainly didn't, and no one in the family said, and they think we're all with votaphone, But I think I might have to change that, take my own advice and jump on a Telstra service or an opt to service and and maybe split us all up, so at least there's a phone working somewhere. George in Adelaide, Hi, George.
01:20:08
Speaker 10: Matthew, how are you Marie, thank you great show.
01:20:11
Speaker 18: I love your idea of being with more than one carrier.
01:20:15
Speaker 10: Good idea makes there was it does in need very logical. There was a voter phone outage a couple of weeks ago. I noticed because I was sitting in my account's office and couldn't get Wi Fi. And then I got an email later, but it was only twenty minutes or so. I believe that it was on, so it wasn't a major problem, not like the one that was on today. The reason I rang you mentioned this morning about legislation that was passed by only one vote that was memorable or infamous. And you might recall the aggregation of land tax.
01:20:56
Speaker 18: That the Liberals introduced a few years ago. That was one vote in the Upper House really and yeah, it was an independent who used to be a public servant, he was value a general or something, who swore publicly that he would never vote for it and it was an insipid tax, blah blah blah. I don't know what happened and how they managed to convince him, but he voted it in, and I believe it was the doom. It was the beginning of the end of the Liberal Party. I mean, it's something if Labor had introduced it, I get it. You know, it's a wealth tax. But for liberals to encourage you all your life to buy one or two properties and then lump them together and tax you as if you're a squillionaire. I think it affected a lot of people that had and not wealthy people, people that had three houses for their retirement. I'm still not over.
01:21:49
Speaker 10: It, mate, I should be. I should move on.
01:21:51
Speaker 2: But George D I reckon. The Marshall liberal government seemed to have no idea who its base was in terms of Sorry, the Marshall government seemed to have no idea who its base was in that in land tax, in the abortion legislation they introduced. Just had no idea legislation no one asked for or expected.
01:22:13
Speaker 18: I was arrested on liberal voter all my life. I'm seventy two, and now they made me. The Marshall government made me a swinging voter. Just have a lot of respect for Vince Darzia.
01:22:22
Speaker 5: But what he did.
01:22:24
Speaker 18: You know, he wasn't going to vote for it. Then he was Speaker, and he was, and then he wasn't, and then it was going to be grandfathered. Lie after lie after line and you know they bought it in at the same time that properties were revalued upwards about thirty forty percent. Then they aggregated them and they just made owning property not what.
01:22:45
Speaker 15: It used to do, not what it is.
01:22:47
Speaker 2: George, appreciate the call. In fact, we'll give you a couple of tickets to go along to into the woods at her Madge hold the line there and Jess you'll give you some info on that. Thank you for ringing through. It is coming up to eleven o'clock News on five Double A and on the other side we'll talk the Sala Festival a bit later on in the next hour and also the latest on the bird flu in South Australia. Will have a chat with primary industries. There's been an announcement this morning. We'll get the latest right after the.
01:23:16
Speaker 1: News five Double A Mornings with Matthew Pantellus.
01:23:25
Speaker 2: The state Government's had a media conference this morning on the latest on bird flu around South Australia. It follows the confirmed detection of H five bird flu on June twenty four and a giant petrol at Port Elliott on the Florio and there's been several suspect cases as well, largely from the York Peninsula or two from the York Peninsula, one from KI Further analysis undertaken on those three birds, but the largest aerial survey undertaking in more than four decades of South Australia, his coastline islands and reefs, has good news, found no evidence of widespread impact from H five bird flu on wildlife. Doctor Sky Fruan is a chief vetery officer at Persa Primary Industries and joins me. Now, doctor Frewen, good morning to you. How are you.
01:24:17
Speaker 19: Good morning, Matthew.
01:24:18
Speaker 8: I'm well, thank you.
01:24:18
Speaker 2: It sounds like maybe it's tad early to say, but we are, if not dodged a bullet, we're in the process of dodging it.
01:24:26
Speaker 19: I think it probably is too early to say. I mean, it's obviously very pleasing that today we've only found H five bird flu in these migratory species, but of course a concern is that it could at some point bread from those birds into insisted of more of our local birds.
01:24:46
Speaker 2: Okay, so this aerial survey, I mean, were you looking for dead animals? Is that essentially what it was about?
01:24:53
Speaker 19: Yeah, essentially, So any evidence that we may have bird flu so yes, dead animals could be as signed, particularly if we're looking at aerial surveys, because you can only get so close to animals in those sort of surveys. But also potentially, you know, they have got some quite up close ability to still see some up close, and they can potentially tell us if they're saying sick animals as well. But like you said at the start, please to report that. We didn't want any evidence of any kind that H five bird plu has spread to any of our local population.
01:25:27
Speaker 2: Right. Are these aerial surveys going to continue You're following them up with people on the ground.
01:25:32
Speaker 19: Yeah, So the surveillance is continuing every day. So and that's a combination of things, so obviously responding to hotline calls and collecting and testing animals through that avenue, as well as getting out and doing both aerial surveys, patrols and coastal surveys with our fisheries officers. So they will continue on a regular basis. We'll adjust how frequently we do that depending on what we find, but the intents at this stage is to continue them for at least several more weeks.
01:26:01
Speaker 2: We've been preparing for this, I mean This hasn't exactly come as a surprise, has it.
01:26:06
Speaker 19: Bird Plock, No, unfortunately. Yeah, as you've just said there, we have been expecting this to come for some time, which was just a matter of when, not if, because this H five berbley has been spreading all around the globe for some years actually, so we're in some ways lucky that it's taken until this long to reach air shore, and we certainly hope that it doesn't take a hold and spread into our local bird life and local wildlife. But that's certainly something we're preparing for in terms of how we might respond quickly and manage those potential impacts if they'se doing in fact occur.
01:26:40
Speaker 2: My gratory birds, I mean, they're the ones that are going to be bringing it. Are they mostly coastal birds.
01:26:46
Speaker 10: Yeah.
01:26:46
Speaker 19: So there's a couple of different ways that birds could reach air shows. So we have birds that migrate from the northern hemisphere, usually arriving around springtime, so that's one potential pathway. The pathway we dealing with right now is birds coming up from the Antarctic and sub Antarctic regions, So they come up here not to breed, but just to feed as much as anything, So they're not necessarily sticking around on our coastline for long periods of time, but there is opportunity if they are coming to shore for them to come into contact with and ative species and spread bird blue. So that's I guess why we are concerned and why we'll continue to keep a close watch on what's happening, continue.
01:27:28
Speaker 2: To test birds, and I imagine too, you're working with Cleveland zoos essay, other commercial poultry people, et cetera, to aver reason all the rest of it, to ensure their animals, their birds are okay.
01:27:44
Speaker 19: Yeah, absolutely so. I mean bird flu as the name suggests, is principally a virus that affects birds, but it can affect other animals really including yeah, unfortunately. So particularly there's a few species in our wildlife that we're more concerned about, just given one their conservation status in terms of whether there are threatened species, but also we've been able to watch what's happened over seas and get some ideas of species that might be more likely to be impacted. So obviously birds, but also pinnipeds which has been seals and sea lions. So we have one of the largest breeding colonies of sea lions in Australia and they are a threatened species, so I think particularly sea line seals and a range of native bird spaces we'd be concerned about, and certainly clelands and zoos essay have been preparing and have had some support through both our local Department for Environment and Water and as well as the Commonwealth in terms of their own preparations on site because they obviously have some unique species there in captivity for conservation purposes.
01:28:52
Speaker 2: Sea lions would be thinking we just dodged the algor Blom. Now we've got to watch out for bird flu.
01:28:57
Speaker 19: I know there's never a never a dune moment when you're a sea line. But yeah, they are of course a species that we have been monitoring for some time just given their threatained species status, and has been some great work being done through both that you know led to our Department for Environment and Water, but in collaboration with researchers at SADI, the South Astralian Research Development Institute as well as universities monitoring those populations and looking at how we can build their resilience. So that work is ongoing for Australian sea lines as well as a number of other species.
01:29:28
Speaker 2: Mark is asking about the sea bird that these are tiny little birds that migrate between Siberia and Saint Kilda mangroves every year. Are they at risk of bringing the scent? I suppose any.
01:29:39
Speaker 8: Bird is Yeah.
01:29:41
Speaker 19: Unfortunately, pretty much any bird potentially could bring it in. We're not entirely sure. While we've been lucky enough to not have it arrive until this point. I guess one potential theory is that those really long distance migration, you know, huge distances for birds to be covering, and if they sick or unwell, maybe they're not making it squar shores if they do, in fact, they have birds blue Unfortunately, unfortunately these sub Ntarctic birds have a few of them have managed to make it here while still carrying the virus. The ones you're talking about there from Siberia, that would be coming from obviously the Northern hemisphere, so that is another potential pathway, and typically most of those normal Northern hemisphere migratory species tend to start arriving around spring.
01:30:27
Speaker 2: Is there an incubation period? I mean, if you talk about sick birds coming down and not making it, how long does it take for a bird to become affected to display whatever symptoms they display.
01:30:37
Speaker 19: Yeah, So obviously every bird is different, just like every person is different. But on average can be up to around about a week, so anywhere from sort of one or two days up to a week before they start sort of being sick. So they've got the virus from another bird's day, but it's up to several days or a week before they start actually getting sick. And then from there, depending on a range of factors that you know, they could die quite quickly or you know, potentially they could recover, but generally the prognosis is very poor.
01:31:08
Speaker 9: It does kill a lot of birds.
01:31:09
Speaker 2: Unfortunately, I wanted to ask you about the bird flu varying and affecting other animals because there were reports of you know, potentially feral animals getting a different version, a mutated version of bird flu. Luke is cutting to the chase in a question on the text line can humans get bird flu?
01:31:30
Speaker 19: Yeah, so, bird flu, like I said at the start, is really basically the bird version of influenza. So it tends to spread birds to birds. It can infect other species so mammals. Essentially for any mammals including people, It's not easily spread to mammals. So the way that mammals have been picking up bird flu, particularly this strain, which is a little bit better in interfecting mammals than most strains of bird flu, but still not very good. So to get infected with bird flu and animal would have to come in to quite close contact with a sick bird or a dead bird that's died from bird flue. So I guess the mammals we'd be most concerned with they are obviously the marine mammals that I've already mentioned, with the sea lions that might be eating these dead birds, for example, as well as predators or scavenger species that might be eating dead birds. And so from a human point of view, it's very rare cases of bird flu, thankfully, and it's typically been in people who've been working closely with birds.
01:32:31
Speaker 2: Right, Okay, it's something we will need to be aware of. I suppose if anybody finds a dead bird on the beach, should they notify PERSA.
01:32:41
Speaker 19: Yeah, absolutely, that's what we'd ask people to do. So the key message that's out there that we're asking of the public is to avoid, record and report. So the avoid part is just to not touch sick or dead birds. That's really just to keep yourself safe. If you have pets, keep them away from sick or dead birds as well. Record some key details. If you have a phone and able to take photos or videos, that's obviously really helpful. But otherwise, the description of the animal or a species, if you're confident in knowing what the species is, and just where you are, what time and date and location are key things. And I guess if the if the animal is still alive, any signs that they're showing is really helpful to know. But also just if it's dead, that's also helpful either way. Reporting out to our hotline. Yeah, don't touch it, Yeah please, that's the general message, and that's really just for people's safety. Obviously, with just these small number of isolated cases in those migratory species, the risk is not enormous, so most dead birds that you find will not have bird flu, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
01:33:42
Speaker 2: Just finally, here's another question, how did bird flu start? Where's its origin? That's from Peter.
01:33:47
Speaker 19: Yeah, so it circulates through bird species all the time, and so I guess this particular strain is a little bit different in that usually bird flu is spread by wild birds, but the wild birds are healthy, so they're spreading the virus around to other species but not getting sick. Sell This particular strain, unfortunately, is killing wild birds as well. So it's been around for many, many, many years. It's not a new disease. This particular strain of bird flu is relatively new.
01:34:21
Speaker 2: Does H five mean it's the fifth version?
01:34:24
Speaker 19: No, it's got The influenza virus is quite complex and it changes a lot all the time. There's different parts of the virus.
01:34:37
Speaker 2: I think we've lost her. Yeah, they well blame Telstra. That was doctor Sky Fruian Fruho is chief veterinary officer at PERSA. Hopefully Sky has stopped talking, but she's dropped out. But you know, I think we get the gist. So bird flu is around, but not to the extent that perhaps it could have otherwise been, which is good news. And the largest aerial survey of our coastline in decades since the seventies and eighties has found no dead animals, nothing of consequence, which is positive. And that's the good news. All right, we'll take a break. It is twenty past eleven on five double A eight double two to three double O double oh the number I guess with bird flu be aware, be alarmed? No, what is it? Be alarmed, not alert? Well, the other way around, alert not alarmed. Yes, that sounds better. Alrighty, we'll take a break.
01:35:30
Speaker 1: On five Double A Mornings with Matthew Pantellus.
01:35:36
Speaker 2: Twenty four past eleven on five Double A Paul and Evanstone Garden Side.
01:35:40
Speaker 9: Paul.
01:35:41
Speaker 12: Okay, Matthew, I'm good.
01:35:42
Speaker 2: How are you good?
01:35:43
Speaker 6: Thanks?
01:35:45
Speaker 12: Look, there's a couple of things I want to say. One is with regards to the reignition of the conflict in the Straight Offord movies at the start of this at the start of this war, there was a declaration of this as how many days fuel we've got, et cetera, et cetera, and all of the Henny Pennies came out of the woodwork saying, Oh, we're gonna have to ration, We're gonna have to do this, We're going to have to do that. I noted yesterday the figures that were published say that we've actually got more fuel in reserve now after what four months of restrictions than we had at the start of this process. So I don't think there's been anything like the proper recognition of the Albanesi governments managing of that process, and in regards to the trades shortage that we've got in Australia. I think there are two key contributors to this. One is, how do you expect somebody to enter into a four year indentured apprenticeship and for every one of those four years beyond wages less than they can earn if they're stacking shelves of will we.
01:36:47
Speaker 2: Correct I've said, I mean the rewards come after the apprenticeship obviously, but totally agree with you absolutely.
01:36:57
Speaker 12: And the master builders and all of those because he groups for the employers have argued against those reasonable wages for people every year for the last thirty years. The second point about this is, if we go back even twenty years, but probably closer to thirty, if you look at all of the institutions that governments ran that skilled people up. So you know, we had things like the Engineering and Water Supply Service. We had the Housing Trust whose remit was to actually build houses for people who needed accommodation. We had the railways where we had hundreds and hundreds of trained fitters and turners and mechanics. All of those things are gone because we went for no, let the market provide it, Let the market provide it. And what we've now got is a market that doesn't provide anything.
01:37:51
Speaker 2: Well, it mostly works.
01:37:56
Speaker 12: How do you say the market works. We've got a situation where we decided that we weren't going to build houses for people on low incomes. Let's let the market do it. Let's incentivize people getting getting into private ownership and rentals. And we've and we've done that, and every Australian has paid additional tax to support that process. So you know, when you can, when you can go out and buy and and I have no problem with people trying to get ahead, but it shouldn't be on the on the backs of people who can't afford to do anything, so they're trapped into a situation where like I've never I've chosen never to go down the path of investing in real estate as an asset because I think a home is a home. It's not it's not principally something that you should be looking to make money off of as an investor.
01:38:45
Speaker 2: You know, although you know, I mean, you're also providing a service. You're providing somewhere for someone to live for goodness sake.
01:38:52
Speaker 12: But you're providing a service that was formally provided for as an underpinning basic human right by government. Government made sure that people had a house to live in Okay and when they could get off of that housing trust roundabout and get into their own place, which was ordinarily something a bit better than you know, the double bread double red brick duplex in Evanston where I grew up. Then that was great. But there was there was a base, there was someone where he could start. That base isn't there anymore? So people have only got the opportunity. They stay at home, and you know they're thirty five year old. As a made of mine was saying in the other day's thirty five year old son who cannot possibly contemplate getting out into his own place. There are no housing trust accommodations available for these people anymore. Thirty years ago they.
01:39:43
Speaker 14: Were at ease traps.
01:39:45
Speaker 12: Look can you imagine being thirty five and knowing that you are never going to get ahead?
01:39:51
Speaker 2: I know it's not good. Is that? Then? House prices have something to do with that. I suppose these days in a big way in that people can't afford to enter the market and certainly at thirty five. Well, you know, working hard only takes you so far, I suppose, depending on what he's been doing for the last twenty odd years since leaving school. Just a little under that. Thank you Paul for the call. You've made some good points. Ash At Edwards down.
01:40:17
Speaker 3: Hello, No, Matthew extremely frustrated.
01:40:20
Speaker 15: I am yeah, you would tell me.
01:40:22
Speaker 3: Thanks to Telstra, I can't. I'd like with my phone call dropped out before mobile. Yeah, I can't send her received text. I try to send you a text and it bounce back. Well, so consequently I can't receive texts to log into MOYOB or the CBA or any other financial institution. So it's making business quite difficult today.
01:40:45
Speaker 2: I bet it is. And you know, funny you should say about our text line. I've had texts like repeat the same text coming through from the same people like time and time again this morning, which I've put down to Telstra that obviously the system is kind of buggery up. So it's not great, is it. If you're sitting at home waiting for your servant. Have you tried, you know, the old control alt delete, turning it half and on again?
01:41:08
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, no, I've done all those things and with my phone, well both my desktop and my phone. So yeah, just a thorough pain in the arf.
01:41:17
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what it might. I don't know if you can do it. But whether you put your land on your phone, your NBN on for your computer on Telstra and go to I don't know, votaphone eruptors for your phone.
01:41:28
Speaker 3: Well, I mean it should work considering there's a tower across the road from us, about fifty yards away.
01:41:34
Speaker 2: It should absolutely it should. Good on your ash, good luck patients will be an absolute key. Jeff at Glenel Hello, Jeff, Yeah.
01:41:42
Speaker 15: Good morning stranger.
01:41:43
Speaker 2: How are you.
01:41:45
Speaker 15: Ah, we're getting ribe caught up in this tools.
01:41:50
Speaker 2: Yeah, but you've got through.
01:41:52
Speaker 15: Yeah, yeah, this works, but and we'll work on this next week when we know more what's going on the mobiles. My wife can ring me on her mobile to my home line and it works perfect. But I can't call her.
01:42:20
Speaker 2: From the landline or from your phone.
01:42:23
Speaker 15: From my home line. Yeah right, And Jesse can can work out what the problem is. And you'll say till.
01:42:33
Speaker 2: Us to mean we can ring your landline presumably to call you back.
01:42:37
Speaker 15: Yeah, that's otherwise she wouldn't be well Jesse, you ring up. There's no problem there.
01:42:44
Speaker 2: That's crazy, isn't it.
01:42:46
Speaker 15: Gee. I'll tell you what. I'd hate to be the engineer who's trying to figure out where the fault is at the moment, and I'll leave it at that.
01:42:54
Speaker 2: Good on you, Jeff, Thanks for the call. I got an email here saying you said earlier you haven't had a landline since two thousand and seven. Was that after you ripped it off the wall when Port lost the Grand Final by one hundred and nineteen points and you didn't want anyone calling to stir you up? Not quite. No, I ripped it out the wall because we were renovating and basically moved out of the home, so it was pointless paying for ten months and never put it back on. That's why that was two thousand and seven. So it's nineteen years without a landline and haven't missed it since. Okay, why would you have one? I don't understand why you'd bother with the landline in this day and age, but there we are that some people do. God on you for having one. If that's the way it's been, that's fine, that's not a criticism. But yeah, don't need one. Really not if you've got a mobile. Of course, Telstra has to play ball news headlines time on five Double A.
01:43:53
Speaker 1: Five Double A Mornings with Matthew Pantellus.
01:44:00
Speaker 2: Twenty five to twelve on five Double A. Well, this next event an annual event in South Australia. I've got to say it feels new to me. And if you'd asked me how long SALA Essay Living Artists has been has been operating and showcasing the brilliant work of people right across the state in venues right across the state, I would have said, I don't know, fifteen years. Well it turns out it's almost half what it actually has been running for twenty nine years. I can't believe that. And the launch of Sala's been held today. Bridget Alfred is on the line the CEO. Hello, Bridget, Hi, twenty nine years. That's unreal.
01:44:37
Speaker 20: I know, I know it's starting to clock up.
01:44:39
Speaker 2: Yeah, it is, all right. Tell us about SALA this year. What can we expect.
01:44:43
Speaker 20: Well, it's a fantastic program. We've got over seven hundred exhibitions and events that will play out across the entire state and around about eleven thousand artists this year, so you know, artist all all walks of the visual arts world and all ages and the exhibiting in professional galleries, uh to backguard studios. Sou will be around every corner in the month of August.
01:45:19
Speaker 2: Okay, is it just paintings or does our incorporate a wider scheme including performance?
01:45:26
Speaker 5: It does?
01:45:27
Speaker 10: It does.
01:45:27
Speaker 20: An artist Aphea actually has a performance running Sanstag throughout the festival. It's becoming more and more elastic. What is visual arts? So there's and as you said, it comes is now performance arts, moving image.
01:45:47
Speaker 8: So c J.
01:45:48
Speaker 20: Taylor, who has had will have a fabulous exhibition at ACE for Adelaide Central Adelaide Contemporary Experimental and CJ works sort of a nexus of photography and cinematography really, so three large screens and that work sort of a meditation on land belonging and climate emergency. And then you of course have your your store walls, your ceramic pieces, your painting, drawing, printing. It's a whole gamut. So there's there's something for everybody, which is lovely. And there are so many different ways to access access to different you know, the different works.
01:46:37
Speaker 2: I see. There's there's walking tours, I mean there's bus tours too, we'll talk about those in a sec but there's a walking tour around Adelaide and there's a Port Adelaide after dark tour as well.
01:46:49
Speaker 16: Which sounds so that's going to be down in the port on Saturday the fifteenth from five thirty pm and Port Adelaide Metal Councils trying to support behind this activity.
01:47:03
Speaker 5: They are.
01:47:05
Speaker 20: They'll be multiple tourists leading leaving around the port the different venues that have got UH artists installed. There will be live music. They there's also these fantastic inflatable I think the river nightwalks, so that will be able to be seen to Aunt Sala up late down around the river, down around the port river. So yeah, a lot of fun and be booked. The tours can all be booked through the Sala Online program Portal okay and.
01:47:52
Speaker 2: The bus tours you're going all over the place. I see the hills, the Barossa, Harndorf to Canman two, South Coast or South Coast rather bus tours right across checking out works about.
01:48:05
Speaker 12: Yes, yeah, well.
01:48:06
Speaker 20: We've what we really do because the program program is so expansive, we really want to help people get around and see what's there and give them a way to kind of navigate the program. And the tours are a really good way to do that. And the bus tours they're all, you know, they're put aside the whole day for them. They incorporate lunch at a venue that's got an artist, so artist talk, there'll be you know, gones and coffee along the way. It's a great way to find out about the different key regions, so you know, Adelaide Hills, that beautiful coastal area across the valley and find out about the local artists because we're featuring local artists in all of those different areas and shining alive and what they do.
01:48:58
Speaker 2: Yeah, Oh, that's that's amazing. It's just as big as it's ever been. It sounds that.
01:49:04
Speaker 20: It's I know, I look it's it probably is in terms of five I think. I think the festivals are really reliably, reliably sitting around this side at the moment. It's had really good traction over the last well five years. I mean it's been growing for almost thirty as we know. But I think there's real confidence in the community about what it is now. People understand it and artists understand that it's a really it's a it's a real celebration and a really good way of artists to meet their audiences and for audiences to meet the artists. And we've got a really unique community in South Australia. One. We have so many creatives here and the real our environment ports be able to be able to develop their creative practices. But we've also got a really really strong hosting environment. We've got a really strong hosting community. We have venues throw their support behind this, and we have a public that broadly just wants to get behind events and celebrate the achievements of other people. And it's it's unique, unique to Us Australia.
01:50:25
Speaker 19: It's really special.
01:50:26
Speaker 2: Absolutely, does anyone else do anything like this around the country?
01:50:30
Speaker 20: No, I don't think so.
01:50:32
Speaker 10: No.
01:50:32
Speaker 20: I think it's just something that exists because of the particular place that we are, and you know, people come in and visit to be part of it, but nowhere else has quite the right set of circumstances and environments that enables it.
01:50:51
Speaker 8: Yeah.
01:50:51
Speaker 2: Bridge and it starts launches today of the program, but it starts August one, runs right through August the thirty first eleven thousand artists I suppose they've got to be good to get displayed, right, But art is so judgmental. I mean, it's all eye of the beholder, I suppose in terms of making a call. I know, if I was to entry, it will be stick figures. And I really haven't graduated past the reception drawing of a house, smoke coming out the chimney, a car and the driveway, a tree in the sun, and that's about it.
01:51:20
Speaker 20: But that is, you know, But it's actually the thing about Fala is that it's not judgmental, and I think that's that's what the.
01:51:27
Speaker 12: Beauty of it is.
01:51:28
Speaker 20: And so you do have this this sort of central body of incredibly skilled artists that have international careers that will be exhibiting in Salah. But there are also people who had just started and who are just you know, are joining in. They've joined a community of art at their local cafe and they are bravely putting their work out there, and it's to be kind of welcome and celebrated, and there's you know, there's connection one through everybody. Yeah, everyone's creative.
01:52:07
Speaker 2: Well in one way or another. That's certainly true. Bridge. Thank you so much for your time today. Good luck with it next month. Thank you, Thank you Bridget Alfred, who is the CEO of Sale South Australian Living Artists, and you won't miss it. Eleven thousand artists right across the state displaying their work. There's something somewhere for everybody, So make sure you go online at Salah and have a look, download the program, get pick up a program. I'm sure they're available and you'll be able to see where an event is near you. But the night in the port sounds fun on a tour around having a look at different and you'd be going to pubs and stuff as well, so you know what worth it? Murray at Valley Vie Hello.
01:52:47
Speaker 21: Oh, hello, yeah, I'm on a landline because we've still got a small outage. Well here, I'm lucky I've got one.
01:52:56
Speaker 2: Yeah, there you go.
01:53:00
Speaker 21: I was wondering with this outage. Now, if we had driverless cars, driverless taxis, and what about the Uber drivers that are depending on Telstra for calls and the breakfast delivery drivers.
01:53:16
Speaker 2: Ye well they'd be all online for all of that. But indeed, same thing, isn't.
01:53:20
Speaker 15: It how yeh?
01:53:22
Speaker 21: If it's not working exactly, if it's affected the trains like that in Victoria and other things.
01:53:28
Speaker 2: How would I think you made this point to my producer. You just mentioned that driverless cars, how would they work?
01:53:34
Speaker 21: Yeah, because it has to be done through a computerized system. Can I just talk about the apprenticeships and that when I was back at school, I went to nord Tech and when we had our would work our applied electricity, plastics, a metalwork, we had hands on, you know, some that didn't want to do that. We had cars that we could work on if somebody wanted to look at a mechanic course, you know, and a lot of the lads there because you needed to do measurements, they wanted to apply themselves to maths and so you needed mathematics to work out your measurements and everything that you had done. And ever since, they stopped that because they blamed the parents and the parents wanted their kids to go to university. They didn't want this, but it definitely I can't see the parents wanting it. And that's where the apprenticeship fell down because a lot of my mates, you know, they said, oh, I want to become an electricist, and I really like, you know, the way things work there or actually one of lad become a plumber because he got it there. He just liked working. But like in woodwork, we made canoes and and you know, small buildings. You know, we had great teachers in that area.
01:55:17
Speaker 2: See those those skills are almost gone, aren't they.
01:55:20
Speaker 21: I wonder what and why, you know, even like doing a craft if you know, somebody retires and they can still remember what you know and had the books from the school area. You know, when you finish work, you can go back to, you know, building things yourself in the handicraft, the woodwork. And I think that's all lost now.
01:55:48
Speaker 2: Well some still do it. I mean my both sons are at the same school, or were once gone but finished. But he made the older one he made a desk for his room. It's almost like walking into the overal because it's a big wooden desk, it's ornate, it's magnificent. He did that at school. The other one, who's into making models of things, he's built himself at school, some shelving. So you know that they're still taught. For those who are, there's some woodworking class and they've both done that quite well. But you know, you don't want to lose those skills entirely. And you know canoes and the rest I mean that is that has gone the whole hug.
01:56:27
Speaker 21: It's still going.
01:56:27
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, still going, yep, still.
01:56:29
Speaker 21: Going because we had a rule tough teacher, because you know, playing with electricity is dangerous.
01:56:37
Speaker 2: Yep, you don't want to learn trial and error of that.
01:56:41
Speaker 21: No, no, definitely not dangerous.
01:56:46
Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, totally good on You're Mrried, Thank you, I see you later on. All right, it is coming up to twelve to twelve on five double A eight double two three double oh double oh is the number back with Angelo Amber and others calling through right now. We'll get to your calls after these wors.
01:57:00
Speaker 1: Five double A mornings with Matthew Pantellus.
01:57:04
Speaker 2: Fifteen degrees in the city as we make our way to seventeen on this partly cloudy day. Angelo, it Sunds Salisbury North.
01:57:11
Speaker 3: Hi, Angelo, Hey, Maddie, how are you?
01:57:13
Speaker 2: I'm good? How are you?
01:57:15
Speaker 8: Hey?
01:57:15
Speaker 10: Good?
01:57:15
Speaker 22: Thank you again?
01:57:16
Speaker 15: Good?
01:57:16
Speaker 22: Yeah, yeah. I was just thinking about the apprenticeships and all that, right, I remember years ago Hill God one experience, Pio want experienced people the time, come away for a lot of truck driver whatever. It was right on that He's got himself on the foot one day. You know what happened to the foot? They didn't They didn't take on people who wanted to drive, or teach people to drive when he that, or or take on younger people who want who want.
01:57:44
Speaker 8: To do the job.
01:57:45
Speaker 22: You know, the end, I can't find the worst. I wanted him because I was one experienced people.
01:57:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's I mean, if you train people to do it, you get somebody then for life hopefully anyway, that would be the thinking.
01:58:00
Speaker 22: Whatever what I'm saying, they like, if it's like the market, what' take much to look for the right people to find the job anyway?
01:58:06
Speaker 2: That's right exactly, But they keep.
01:58:09
Speaker 22: Ignoring everyone, ignoring everyone.
01:58:11
Speaker 8: That said.
01:58:13
Speaker 22: If you did, you can get to apprenticeship or something. They don't put up to year eleven. You need you need so many, so many checks whatever is for year eleven you have to get for you the president. Then I said, now now year twelve. Yeah, so yeah, you got people with DCERD. You don't want to go to school with what was better, don't want to.
01:58:33
Speaker 15: Go to work.
01:58:33
Speaker 22: They learned something they can't get a prejud because then didn't finish eleven.
01:58:37
Speaker 2: That's right, so you've got to be seventeen, I think, don't you otherwise without an apprentice to ship to leave school anyways, So yeah, I hear you, Angelo, thank you for the call. I got to move on Amber at North Aburn. Hello.
01:58:49
Speaker 23: Oh yes, good morning, Matthew, loving you in the morning. Now, the Poor Adelaide tours, i'd recommend that.
01:58:57
Speaker 2: Really you've been on.
01:58:59
Speaker 23: Yes, yeah, so I have. And a lot of people don't realize that Port Adelaide was originally Port Misery and they didn't prepare for the king tides in the flood storms, and the whole of Port Misery was flooded.
01:59:16
Speaker 2: And that was around the corner though from the port though, wasn't it That was closer to sort of West Lakes down Queenstown Way.
01:59:23
Speaker 23: No, no, no, this is Port Adelaide.
01:59:25
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, but you know around the bend, around where the true bridge was, and then a little bit further on.
01:59:32
Speaker 23: No, because i'd been underground where the original ground was. Okay, yeah, because what they did they sort of leveled it off and they built on top was the original town.
01:59:49
Speaker 2: You can see a lot of buildings where the windows and doors are sort of coming out of the football yea.
01:59:54
Speaker 23: And when you go, well, I don't know if it's the same one that lady was talking about. This one. You went down into their basement which was originally the screen level and so you've got the stables and few rooms and oh it's really fascinating. I recommend that to anyone. The other thing I was going to say, now, Matthew was at you. I told you about the big fire in the ship at Port Adelaide and the fireman statue in cemetery in the Shetland cemetery.
02:00:29
Speaker 6: Yeah.
02:00:30
Speaker 23: Did you ever go and.
02:00:31
Speaker 2: See Yeah, yeah, I have. Yeah, that's that was the Now is it the Singapore Was that the name of the show?
02:00:37
Speaker 23: I think four?
02:00:40
Speaker 2: It was the twenty fourth of April. I reckon nineteen twenty four and this ship blew up and three firemen were killed.
02:00:47
Speaker 8: Yeah, that's right.
02:00:48
Speaker 23: And they actually when they knew it was a disaster, they didn't tell people to go down there. It was only people that volunteered. Some unwriting book about it. It's absolutely fascinating. But yeah, that's Port Adelaide's got so much to offer.
02:01:06
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, a lot of history history, Yeah, totally. Yeah. There's a great book actually called From Misery to Riches. I think, and it's the whole history of the port and all the things including that one the ship blowing up in that disaster in nineteen twenty four, and a lot of other things as well. Great book if you're interested in the history of the port.
02:01:29
Speaker 23: And I'll tell you what any parents, if you've got a day, you want to do something very inexpensive, the Maritime Museum. Yes, at Port Adelaide. My daughter went to La Clever Primary School and when they were in the grade sixth top grade, there was a bunch of them that were trained to be one day week. The host gess is on the different things, and my daughter was on this boat and she had to do this feel and blah blah blah. And but I used to like going downstairs and they've got they sort of built the inside of the bows and there's tape recording and the boat's creaking in the thing where they had no food services.
02:02:12
Speaker 15: And that.
02:02:14
Speaker 23: Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. But it's very inexpensive. But the Maritime Museum, it's fascinating.
02:02:24
Speaker 2: Yeah, that totally is.
02:02:25
Speaker 23: Yeah, I recommend it.
02:02:27
Speaker 2: And you can go downstairs too, into that original ground floor area.
02:02:33
Speaker 5: Yes, yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, good.
02:02:37
Speaker 2: Thank you. Thanks for the course. So go on the Sala Night tour. That's what your recommendation. Thank you, Vinnie at Grain.
02:02:43
Speaker 8: Vinnie, all right, thanks, yeah, I'm on the landlor I just want to tell you something. You when you want to get something fixed, you ring up the company and go you know, it goes under sales repairs. Yeah. Yeah, I'm getting frustrated. So I worked this one out, sir ring ups. It's amaze how fast they pick up that phone. Right, So they pick it up and then I said, look, actually I really want repairs. So they get me straight on too, repeat it. I thought this is the way to do it. Ringsals first, then you'll get straight onto repairs.
02:03:13
Speaker 2: There you go, good tip, Vinnie, love it.
02:03:16
Speaker 5: Thank you, Matt.
02:03:17
Speaker 2: Have a good day. What a good suggestion that would work. You can see that time for me to go have a great afternoon. Conversations with Cornsey Craig Collies, his guest Angie McBride follows. It's around two minutes to twelve on five double A
Speaker 1: Five Double A Mornings with Matthew Pantellus.

02:02:43

You when you want to get something fixed, you ring up the company and go you know, it goes under sales repairs. Yeah. Yeah, I'm getting frustrated. So I worked this one out, sir ring ups. It's amaze how fast they pick up that phone. Right, So they pick it up and then I said, look, actually I really want repairs. So they get me straight on too, repeat it. I thought this is the way to do it. Ringsals first, then you'll get straight onto repairs.
02:03:13
Speaker 2: There you go, good tip, Vinnie, love it.
