Static, Studio Magic, and the "Mother" of All Bad Advice with JD Smith

Jennifer Sheets and co-host Angela Cherry welcome media veteran and entrepreneur JD Smith to the studio. The episode kicks off with a lively, nostalgic look back at the era of live radio, with JD reenacting a classic late-90s broadcast break and sharing stories from his early days at a rock station in Salt Lake City. The hosts and guests connect over the power of genuine human connectivity in broadcasting, contrasting the magic of live, real-time media with modern automation and the "point-and-click" nature of contemporary digital platforms. This discussion naturally segments into a deeper exploration of why JD does what he does and how his professional journey eventually transitioned from on-air radio talent into business ownership.

As the conversation continues, JD outlines his evolution from creative services to founding Studio 702, a creative-first ad agency. He emphasizes the critical intersection of brand messaging and internal corporate culture, explaining that a company's marketing can only be successful if its internal operations and leadership are rooted in alignment, accountability, and authenticity. To wrap up the segment, Angela asks JD to share the best and worst pieces of advice he has ever received. JD humorously recalls the worst advice coming from his mother, who begged him not to quit his steady day job at a massive Utah chicken hatchery to pursue radio—a leap of faith that ultimately shaped his entire career.
