⭐️ EPISODE SEVEN — SEEING STARS ⭐️
Five points. Five lines. One symbol that can tell an audience witchcraft before a single spell has been cast.
But has the pentagram always belonged to witches?
In Episode Seven of HEXPOSITION: Witches on Screen, we’re tracing the surprisingly complicated history of one of the most recognisable symbols associated with witchcraft — from its ancient uses and changing meanings to modern Pagan practice, Satanic imagery and the way film and television have turned five simple lines into instant supernatural shorthand.
We’ll look at how the pentagram appears across popular culture, why turning it upside down can completely change what audiences think they’re seeing, and how horror in particular has helped blur the boundaries between witchcraft, Paganism, occultism and Satanism.
As a practising witch who wears and has pentagrams tattooed on her body, I’ll also talk about what the symbol means within my own practice — and what it’s like carrying a symbol that other people sometimes think they already understand.
Because the pentagram has spent thousands of years gathering meanings. Witchcraft is only one chapter of its story.
✨ It’s time for Fact, Fiction or Folklore. ✨
And, of course, there’s another Hidden Hex hiding somewhere amongst the stars… 👀

00:00:00.959 --> 00:00:05.759
There are some symbols in horror that filmmakers barely need to explain anymore.
00:00:06.080 --> 00:00:13.039
Imagine a camera slowly moving across the floor of a darkened room until it reveals a five-pointed star.
00:00:13.439 --> 00:00:19.839
Perhaps there are candles burning nearby, or somebody has carefully enclosed the star inside a circle.
00:00:20.079 --> 00:00:26.879
Even before anything supernatural has actually happened, most of us understand what the film wants us to think.
00:00:27.120 --> 00:00:29.600
Something occult is happening here.
00:00:29.920 --> 00:00:32.000
Something out of the ordinary.
00:00:32.240 --> 00:00:39.520
And very often popular culture goes one step further and tells us that means something evil is happening too.
00:00:40.159 --> 00:00:52.719
The pentagram has become so closely associated with Satan, demons, and forbidden magic in Western popular culture that its appearance can do an enormous amount of storytelling before a character has said a word.
00:00:52.880 --> 00:00:57.759
And that really annoys me, because I know the pentagram as a symbol of protection.
00:00:57.920 --> 00:01:09.519
In fact, when Supernatural first appeared, I refused to watch it for six whole seasons because I'd seen the pentagram in its imagery and thought, oh, they're going to tell everyone it's evil, aren't they?
00:01:09.760 --> 00:01:11.519
I wasn't frightened of the symbol.
00:01:11.680 --> 00:01:14.319
I was frightened they were going to get it wrong.
00:01:14.640 --> 00:01:18.879
Then eventually a friend told me, no, they use it as protection.
00:01:19.200 --> 00:01:22.400
So I watched the first episode and I never looked back.
00:01:22.640 --> 00:01:34.719
Several academic papers, numerous supernatural conventions, and four separate photographs with Jensen Accles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins, Ruth Connell, and Kim Rhodes, proudly displayed on my bedroom wall later.
00:01:34.959 --> 00:01:38.879
I think we can safely say my boycott ended rather comprehensively.
00:01:39.200 --> 00:01:44.640
But supernatural surprised me because it understood something that screen horror has frequently muddied.
00:01:44.799 --> 00:01:49.840
A symbol that looks occult isn't necessarily inviting something evil in.
00:01:50.079 --> 00:01:54.000
Sometimes it's there specifically to keep something evil out.
00:01:54.480 --> 00:01:58.719
And that idea is considerably older than the Winchester brothers.
00:01:58.879 --> 00:02:12.560
Because the five-pointed star that modern popular culture has taught us to associate with witchcraft, Satanism, and the occult has been used by people who would probably be rather surprised by what we now think it means, including medieval Christians.
00:02:12.800 --> 00:02:22.960
So, how did we get from a symbol associated with protection to something a street preacher once spotted around my neck and used as evidence that I was going to hell?
00:02:23.199 --> 00:02:28.000
And how did the pentagram become so inseparable from our image of the witch?
00:02:59.680 --> 00:03:08.319
My name is Millie Hardy Ashton, and today we're talking about one of the most instantly recognizable symbols associated with witchcraft, the pentagram.
00:03:08.800 --> 00:03:13.599
Although, depending on exactly what you're picturing, you might actually be thinking of a pentacle.
00:03:13.759 --> 00:03:15.599
Don't worry, we'll get to that.
00:03:15.840 --> 00:03:24.800
Our main screen text this week is The Craft, because its portrayal of teenage witchcraft arrived at a particularly interesting moment in the history of the screen witch.
00:03:24.960 --> 00:03:38.560
By the 1990s, filmmakers had inherited decades of visual shorthand, connecting occult imagery with danger, while film and television were increasingly giving those same symbols to witches we were actually supposed to identify with.
00:03:39.039 --> 00:03:53.280
We're also going to return properly to supernatural, because my sixth season boycott aside, the series gives us a particularly useful example of how popular culture can either reinforce or challenge what audiences think an occult symbol is supposed to do.
00:03:53.520 --> 00:04:01.759
And this week's hidden hex takes us somewhere I don't think most people encountering a pentagram in horror film would immediately expect, to King Arthur's court.
00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:08.960
But before we get there, we need to work out what this little five-pointed star was doing before cinema got a hold of it.
00:04:16.079 --> 00:04:20.800
One of the difficulties with talking about the pentagram is that we tend to approach it backwards.
00:04:20.959 --> 00:04:30.000
We now recognize it as an occult symbol, so it's very tempting to look backwards through history and assume that everyone else must have recognized it in roughly the same way.
00:04:30.240 --> 00:04:31.680
Only they didn't.
00:04:31.920 --> 00:04:38.560
The shape itself is incredibly old, and forms of the five-pointed star appear across different ancient cultures.
00:04:38.800 --> 00:04:50.959
That immediately creates a problem for anybody hoping to give the pentagram one neat origin story, because people have repeatedly adopted the same basic geometric form and attached different ideas to it.
00:04:51.279 --> 00:04:57.920
One particularly important chapter in its history comes from the followers of the ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras.
00:04:58.160 --> 00:05:00.240
Yes, that Pythagoras.
00:05:00.480 --> 00:05:09.360
If his name immediately transported you back to a maths classroom and the inexplicable importance of finding the missing side of a triangle, I'm sorry.
00:05:09.600 --> 00:05:15.600
The Pythagoreans were interested in mathematics as something much more profound than a school exercise.
00:05:15.839 --> 00:05:26.720
Number and proportion could reveal an underlying harmony within the universe, and the pentagram was particularly fascinating because its intersecting lines create repeating mathematical relationships.
00:05:27.040 --> 00:05:31.279
For people looking at the world in that way, geometry wasn't simply useful.
00:05:31.519 --> 00:05:33.759
It could tell you something about order.
00:05:34.160 --> 00:05:41.839
So already we have a five-pointed star carrying associations that are remarkably different from those it will eventually acquire in horror.
00:05:42.079 --> 00:05:44.160
Nobody needs to be summoning anything.
00:05:44.319 --> 00:05:48.800
The significance is coming from the apparent harmony contained within the shape itself.
00:05:48.959 --> 00:05:54.079
And this is probably the most important thing to understand about the pentagram before we go any further.
00:05:54.319 --> 00:05:57.040
Symbols don't behave like words in a dictionary.
00:05:57.199 --> 00:05:58.800
Their meanings aren't fixed.
00:05:58.959 --> 00:06:01.199
We learned this with the colour green.
00:06:01.600 --> 00:06:05.680
A community can inherit a symbol from somewhere else and reinterpret it.
00:06:05.839 --> 00:06:14.959
Religious change can transform its meaning again, and centuries later, popular culture can take that same image and give it an entirely new emotional charge.
00:06:15.199 --> 00:06:20.879
The pentagram is an unusually good example because it simply refuses to belong to one story.
00:06:21.120 --> 00:06:28.000
As we move into medieval Europe, for example, we find the five-pointed star appearing within Christian contexts.
00:06:28.240 --> 00:06:32.399
This is where our modern assumptions can become particularly misleading.
00:06:32.639 --> 00:06:41.439
We're so accustomed to the pentagram being positioned visually against Christianity that seeing it used within Christian symbolism feels almost contradictory.
00:06:41.680 --> 00:06:45.519
But it wasn't necessarily contradictory to the people using it.
00:06:45.759 --> 00:06:55.040
The five points could be connected with the five wounds of Christ, and the continuous structure of the shape could communicate ideas about perfection and interconnectedness.
00:06:55.279 --> 00:07:04.720
It could also carry protective associations, something that becomes especially interesting when we later look at the way magical and religious symbols develop alongside one another.
00:07:04.879 --> 00:07:11.839
That doesn't mean, however, that medieval Europe was full of secret witches wearing pentacle necklaces underneath their tunics.
00:07:12.160 --> 00:07:16.800
We have to be very careful not to take modern witchcraft and project it backwards.
00:07:17.120 --> 00:07:24.240
The people accused of witchcraft in medieval and early modern Europe did not belong to one organized religion called witchcraft.
00:07:24.560 --> 00:07:28.399
Many of them wouldn't have identified themselves as witches at all.
00:07:28.560 --> 00:07:38.319
As we've already seen this season so far, the witch imagined by demonologists, theologians, and eventually witch hunters was often very different from the person standing accused.
00:07:38.480 --> 00:07:45.040
So when we find pentagrams in historical sources, we can't simply label them witch symbols and move on.
00:07:45.439 --> 00:08:00.480
The connection between the pentagram and witchcraft as we recognize it today developed much later, through a complicated mixture of Western esotericism, ceremonial magic, occult revival movements, and eventually modern pagan and witchcraft traditions.
00:08:00.720 --> 00:08:05.600
Somewhere during that journey, orientation became very important too.
00:08:05.839 --> 00:08:14.639
A point-up pentagram could be interpreted within some occult systems as representing spirit in harmony with or governing the material elements.
00:08:14.879 --> 00:08:22.240
Turn the symbol upside down, particularly within later occult interpretations, and that relationship could be understood differently.
00:08:22.480 --> 00:08:35.039
This becomes especially significant during the 19th century, when French occultist Eliphas Levy wrote about the pentagram and helped popularize a distinction between its upright and inverted forms.
00:08:35.279 --> 00:08:44.879
Later occult imagery would strengthen the connection between the inverted pentagram, the goat, and ideas that would eventually feed into modern satanic iconography.
00:08:45.120 --> 00:08:52.240
And once you put a goat's head inside an inverted pentagram, Horace Cinema is not going to politely leave it alone.
00:08:52.559 --> 00:08:57.120
This is where several histories that began separately start getting tangled together.
00:08:57.360 --> 00:09:06.720
The pentagram has existed within philosophical, Christian, magical, and occult contexts, but popular culture gradually compresses those distinctions.
00:09:06.960 --> 00:09:11.679
Eventually, the audience doesn't need the history, it just needs the star.
00:09:20.399 --> 00:09:27.120
By the time cinema develops its own visual language for supernatural evil, the pentagram is extraordinarily useful.
00:09:27.360 --> 00:09:34.639
Film is a visual medium, and filmmakers frequently need audiences to understand a situation before anyone explains it.
00:09:34.879 --> 00:09:39.039
A carefully placed symbol can therefore do an enormous amount of narrative work.
00:09:39.440 --> 00:09:42.799
The pentagram eventually becomes part of that shorthand.
00:09:43.200 --> 00:09:48.159
This is where the craft, released in 1996, becomes particularly interesting.
00:09:48.399 --> 00:09:59.759
The film follows Sarah Bailey after she moves to Los Angeles and becomes involved with Nancy, Bonnie, and Rochelle, three girls at her Catholic school who are already experimenting with witchcraft.
00:09:59.919 --> 00:10:03.679
And the craft arrives at a moment when the screen witch is changing.
00:10:03.919 --> 00:10:10.000
Earlier horror traditions frequently position occult practice as something audiences encounter from the outside.
00:10:10.159 --> 00:10:17.519
We watch somebody discover the strained ritual or stumble into the forbidden space and understand that they've crossed into something dangerous.
00:10:17.759 --> 00:10:20.960
The craft asks us to go inside with the witches.
00:10:21.279 --> 00:10:25.279
Sarah isn't simply encountering witchcraft, she's learning it.
00:10:25.519 --> 00:10:29.600
That shift changes our relationship with the imagery surrounding her.
00:10:29.840 --> 00:10:33.919
The girls visit an occult shop because they're interested in what it contains.
00:10:34.080 --> 00:10:38.240
Their rituals aren't initially presented as evidence that they're secretly evil.
00:10:38.480 --> 00:10:45.840
Witchcraft offers them the possibility of agency at a point when each girl feels that something in her life is outside her control.
00:10:46.159 --> 00:10:50.639
That doesn't mean the craft is an accurate documentary representation of witchcraft.
00:10:50.879 --> 00:10:52.799
It very definitely isn't.
00:10:53.039 --> 00:11:03.679
The film's central deity, Manon, belongs to the fictional magical system created for the story rather than representing a deity worshipped by one historical pagan tradition.
00:11:03.840 --> 00:11:13.360
The film borrows ideas and aesthetics from different forms of contemporary witchcraft and occult practice, but then reshapes them according to the needs of a supernatural horror film.
00:11:13.600 --> 00:11:15.840
And that distinction is really important.
00:11:16.559 --> 00:11:23.919
A film can draw on real magical practices without accurately representing the religion or practice from which those ideas came.
00:11:24.240 --> 00:11:29.039
But the craft helped do something enormously influential to the visual image of the witch.
00:11:29.200 --> 00:11:31.919
It made occult imagery aspirational.
00:11:32.240 --> 00:11:37.919
The girls don't look like fairy tale witches who have somehow wandered into 20th century California.
00:11:38.240 --> 00:11:48.639
Their witchcraft exists alongside teenage fashion and friendship, which means magical identity can be something contemporary rather than something safely confined to history or fantasy.
00:11:48.879 --> 00:11:53.360
The symbolism surrounding witchcraft therefore begins doing two jobs at once.
00:11:53.600 --> 00:12:02.879
It can still suggest danger, particularly as Nancy's relationship with power becomes increasingly destructive, but it can also represent belonging and identity.
00:12:03.120 --> 00:12:08.159
That tension is one of the reasons the 1990s are so interesting for screen witchcraft.
00:12:08.399 --> 00:12:16.799
The audience has inherited the visual vocabulary of occult horror, but suddenly we're being invited to identify with the people using it.
00:12:17.039 --> 00:12:21.360
Which brings us back to the television programme I very nearly missed entirely.
00:12:21.679 --> 00:12:22.960
Supernatural.
00:12:23.360 --> 00:12:28.639
When the programme began in 2005, I already knew the pentagram as a protective symbol.
00:12:28.879 --> 00:12:36.320
So when I saw the show's pentagram imagery alongside all the talk of demons and possession, I thought I knew exactly what was going to happen.
00:12:36.559 --> 00:12:38.879
I assumed they were going to get it wrong.
00:12:39.039 --> 00:12:44.799
And that genuinely bothered me enough that I didn't watch it for six seasons.
00:12:45.200 --> 00:12:53.120
Eventually, a friend who actually watched the program corrected me and explained that Supernatural wasn't using the pentagram to say evil at all.
00:12:53.360 --> 00:12:55.279
They were using it for protection.
00:12:55.679 --> 00:13:00.559
That was enough to persuade me to watch the first episode, and apparently that was all it took.
00:13:00.799 --> 00:13:16.399
I subsequently went on to write endless academic papers about supernatural, attended numerous supernatural conventions, and currently have four separate photographs on my bedroom wall featuring encounters with Jensen Accles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins, Ruth Connell, and Kim Rhodes.
00:13:16.799 --> 00:13:18.879
So thank you to the friend who corrected me.
00:13:19.039 --> 00:13:21.519
You cost me quite a lot of money.
00:13:21.840 --> 00:13:28.000
But academically, what Supernatural does with occult symbolism is genuinely interesting.
00:13:28.240 --> 00:13:37.679
Its universe is filled with symbols that might look sinister if your only frame of reference is conventional horror imagery, yet their function is frequently protective.
00:13:38.000 --> 00:13:41.759
The antipossession symbol is perhaps the clearest example.
00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:46.720
Visually, it looks unmistakably occult, and the pentagram sits at its center.
00:13:46.879 --> 00:13:54.240
But its narrative purpose is the opposite of what an audience trained to associate pentagrams with demonic evil might initially expect.
00:13:54.480 --> 00:13:58.639
It prevents possession, and that creates a lovely reversal.
00:13:58.879 --> 00:14:02.720
The occult-looking symbol isn't inviting the demon into the room.
00:14:02.879 --> 00:14:05.600
It's the reason the demon can't get in.
00:14:06.000 --> 00:14:16.159
And there's another useful example of how television teaches us to read magical symbols in charmed, although its central symbol isn't actually a pentagram at all, it's a triketra.
00:14:16.480 --> 00:14:18.720
And that's precisely why it's useful here.
00:14:18.960 --> 00:14:27.759
Triketra becomes so thoroughly associated with the Halliwell Sisters that the symbol itself can communicate charmed without requiring an image of any of the characters.
00:14:28.080 --> 00:14:33.840
Television has taken an existing symbol and, for millions of viewers, added another layer of meaning to it.
00:14:34.000 --> 00:14:36.799
That's what popular culture does extraordinarily well.
00:14:37.039 --> 00:14:40.639
It doesn't necessarily erase the older meaning of a symbol.
00:14:40.799 --> 00:14:46.000
It puts another meaning on top, and our job is to determine which is which.
00:15:07.679 --> 00:15:11.440
What is the difference between a pentagram and a pentacle?
00:15:11.759 --> 00:15:20.000
The neat answer you'll commonly hear is that a pentagram is the five-pointed star itself, while a pentacle is the star enclosed within a circle.
00:15:20.159 --> 00:15:24.080
And for modern witchcraft, that's a perfectly useful distinction.
00:15:24.320 --> 00:15:28.399
Historically, however, the terminology is considerably messier.
00:15:28.639 --> 00:15:42.879
The word pentacle hasn't always referred exclusively to a pentagram inside a circle, and within ceremonial magic, it could describe magical talismans or figures that didn't necessarily look like the symbol modern audiences now expect.
00:15:43.120 --> 00:15:51.919
So if somebody tells you that pentagram has always meant star, while pentacle has always meant star inside a circle, I'm afraid we're putting that one into fiction.
00:15:52.159 --> 00:15:54.399
It's a useful modern convention.
00:15:54.639 --> 00:15:57.360
It isn't a universal historical rule.
00:15:57.600 --> 00:16:02.240
What about the claim that an inverted pentagram is automatically satanic?
00:16:02.480 --> 00:16:04.080
Again, fiction.
00:16:04.639 --> 00:16:15.919
The inverted pentagram has certainly acquired strong satanic associations, particularly through modern occult imagery and eventually through explicitly satanic uses of the symbol.
00:16:16.159 --> 00:16:18.240
Those associations are real.
00:16:18.559 --> 00:16:27.279
What isn't historically defensible is seeing every downward-facing five-pointed star in every context and assuming it means somebody worships Satan.
00:16:27.600 --> 00:16:29.200
Context matters.
00:16:29.440 --> 00:16:33.600
And finally, is the pentagram an ancient symbol of witchcraft?
00:16:33.840 --> 00:16:37.919
I'm giving this one folklore with quite a substantial asterisk.
00:16:38.159 --> 00:16:45.120
The symbol itself is ancient, and its relationship with religious and magical ideas is also very old.
00:16:45.360 --> 00:16:53.840
What isn't ancient is the idea that there has always been one continuous universal tradition of witches using the pentagram as their identifying symbol.
00:16:54.080 --> 00:16:58.000
Modern witchcraft has inherited and reinterpreted older symbols.
00:16:58.159 --> 00:17:06.799
That's very different from saying every person accused of witchcraft 500 years ago would have recognized a necklace around my neck as the official witch logo.
00:17:20.400 --> 00:17:25.599
So after all that history, what does the pentagram actually mean to witches now?
00:17:25.920 --> 00:17:30.720
As always, when we're talking about contemporary witchcraft, there isn't a single answer.
00:17:31.039 --> 00:17:38.400
Witchcraft encompasses a huge range of traditions and individual practices, and not every witch uses the pentagram at all.
00:17:38.720 --> 00:17:52.160
Among those who do, one common interpretation, including the one I use, associates its five points with earth, air, fire, water, and spirit, while the surrounding circle of the pentacle can represent their interconnectedness.
00:17:52.400 --> 00:18:01.359
When drawing a circle during a Wiccan rite, that circle must be drawn in clockwise direction and removed counterclockwise from the spirit point at the top.
00:18:01.599 --> 00:18:10.960
Depending on the practitioner and tradition, it might be worn as a symbol of protection or spirituality, or simply as an outward expression of somebody's identity as a witch.
00:18:11.279 --> 00:18:18.160
I have had many conversations or exchanged polite nods in public between myself and somebody sporting the same symbol.
00:18:18.400 --> 00:18:23.440
We recognize each other as a witch and we acknowledge the kinship of wearing the symbol outwardly.
00:18:23.759 --> 00:18:35.200
And this is one of those episodes where I can't pretend to be a completely detached observer because I have no fewer than three pentagrams tattooed on my body, and I regularly wear one around my neck.
00:18:35.440 --> 00:18:40.880
I've also experienced firsthand just how much cultural baggage that little five-pointed star carries.
00:18:41.039 --> 00:18:53.279
Years ago, when I worked as a teaching assistant in a Christian primary school, I still wore my pentagram, but I moved it from my neck to my ankle and kept it tucked away like a naughty little secret so the vicar wouldn't give me the look.
00:18:53.920 --> 00:18:57.519
Nobody actually sat me down and told me that the symbol was forbidden.
00:18:57.680 --> 00:19:05.119
I simply understood that displaying it openly in that environment might be interpreted as provocative in a way that, to me, it wasn't.
00:19:05.279 --> 00:19:12.960
I didn't want to be accused of corrupting the kids with demonic ideals, so I just didn't invite comment, but I still wanted protection.
00:19:13.440 --> 00:19:16.960
I've also experienced the considerably less subtle version.
00:19:17.119 --> 00:19:23.039
I've been stopped by one of those street preachers with a megaphone and a pile of pamphlets in the middle of a city high street.
00:19:23.200 --> 00:19:27.920
He spotted the pentagram around my neck and informed me that I was going to hell.
00:19:28.160 --> 00:19:37.359
I politely informed him my hell has one L and I wished him a nice day, but I digress, which, as conversational openings go, does rather limit your options.
00:19:37.599 --> 00:19:46.079
There's something genuinely interesting underneath both of those experiences, because neither reaction is really about the piece of jewellery I'm wearing.
00:19:46.240 --> 00:19:50.079
It's about what somebody else believes that symbol tells them about me.
00:19:50.480 --> 00:19:53.599
For me, it represents my witchcraft and spirituality.
00:19:53.759 --> 00:19:59.200
I got my first tattooed to keep the goddess close during my mother's battle with cancer and to protect us both.
00:19:59.359 --> 00:20:01.599
She's in remission, I'm happy to say.
00:20:01.920 --> 00:20:06.960
Another witch might interpret it differently, and plenty of witches don't use the pentagram at all.
00:20:07.200 --> 00:20:11.920
But somebody encountering me in the street doesn't necessarily know any of that.
00:20:12.079 --> 00:20:28.480
They bring their own understanding of the symbol with them, and in contemporary Western culture, that understanding has been profoundly influenced by the association between pentagrams, Satanism, and dangerous magic, which makes what we're about to discover particularly delicious.
00:20:28.799 --> 00:20:38.960
Because apparently I've been hiding a pentagram from a vicar and getting threatened with hell with two L's over a symbol that medieval Christians were perfectly capable of using themselves.
00:20:39.200 --> 00:20:46.079
And I really wish I'd known that when the street preacher stopped me so I could properly get my teeth into a theological argument.
00:21:02.960 --> 00:21:12.480
Symbol that modern Western popular culture so frequently uses to tell us that something is anti-Christian has an extensive history within Christianity itself.
00:21:12.720 --> 00:21:17.839
And one of the loveliest examples survives in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
00:21:18.079 --> 00:21:26.559
In the 14th century poem, Gawain carries a pentangle on his shield, and the poet doesn't treat it as something suspicious that needs explaining away.
00:21:26.720 --> 00:21:27.839
Quite the opposite.
00:21:28.000 --> 00:21:36.160
The poem goes into considerable detail about why the symbol is appropriate for an Arturian knight attempting to embody Christian virtue.
00:21:36.400 --> 00:21:45.519
Its interconnected lines allow the poet to construct a whole system of overlapping fives, linking Gawain's physical qualities with explicitly Christian ideas.
00:21:45.680 --> 00:21:50.960
Among those associations are the five wounds of Christ and the five joys of the Virgin Mary.
00:21:51.200 --> 00:21:59.759
The pentangle becomes an endless knot in which each part supports another, making the geometry of the symbol itself part of what it represents.
00:22:00.400 --> 00:22:02.240
Pythagoras would be proud.
00:22:02.480 --> 00:22:06.480
So Gawain isn't carrying the pentagram, despite being Christian.
00:22:06.720 --> 00:22:10.400
He's carrying it in part because he is Christian.
00:22:10.640 --> 00:22:21.920
Which means somewhere between medieval England and a street preacher informing me that my necklace had booked me a one-way ticket to hell with two L's, the pentagram underwent an extraordinary cultural transformation.
00:22:22.079 --> 00:22:23.680
And that's our hidden hex.
00:22:23.920 --> 00:22:31.440
The pentagram didn't begin as the sinister calling card of the witch, nor has it always functioned as a universal symbol of Satan.
00:22:31.680 --> 00:22:38.720
Its meanings have been repeatedly rewritten by the people using it, and eventually by the stories we tell about it.
00:22:39.039 --> 00:22:50.079
Film and television inherited some of those later occult associations and amplified them until the pentagram became one of the quickest ways of telling an audience that forbidden magic was taking place.
00:22:50.240 --> 00:22:58.720
Eventually we became so fluent in that visual language that the symbol itself could revoke a reaction without anybody stopping to ask where it came from.
00:22:58.880 --> 00:23:00.400
The shape barely changed.
00:23:00.640 --> 00:23:01.279
We did.
00:23:20.640 --> 00:23:27.920
Throughout this season, we've been looking at how audiences learn to recognize witches before a story necessarily tells us that somebody is one.
00:23:28.160 --> 00:23:33.519
Costume can do it, physical appearance can do it, the spaces witches inhabit can do it.
00:23:33.839 --> 00:23:36.400
Symbols can do exactly the same thing.
00:23:36.720 --> 00:23:41.599
Put a pentagram around a character's neck and an audience begins making assumptions.
00:23:41.839 --> 00:23:46.319
The fascinating part is that those assumptions aren't inherent in the shape.
00:23:46.559 --> 00:23:56.880
We've inherited them for centuries of changing religious and occult thought, and then popular culture has strengthened some interpretations while allowing others to disappear from common knowledge.
00:23:57.119 --> 00:24:00.640
That's why the craft is such an important text for this episode.
00:24:00.880 --> 00:24:10.799
Its witches inherit imagery that horror audiences have already been taught to find unsettling, but the film asks us to experience that imagery through the witches themselves.
00:24:11.119 --> 00:24:14.240
We understand why Sarah is attracted to this world.
00:24:14.400 --> 00:24:16.799
We understand why Nancy wants power.
00:24:17.039 --> 00:24:23.839
And even when the magic becomes frightening, the film doesn't reduce witchcraft itself to a simple indication of evil.
00:24:24.000 --> 00:24:31.039
That matters because it helps move the witch from being somebody the audience watches to somebody the audience can imagine being.
00:24:31.279 --> 00:24:33.119
The symbols come with her.
00:24:33.279 --> 00:24:36.640
And then something interesting happens outside the screen.
00:24:36.880 --> 00:24:38.960
Viewers begin wearing them.
00:24:39.279 --> 00:24:41.759
Occult aesthetics become part of fashion.
00:24:42.000 --> 00:24:48.079
People who encounter witchcraft through popular culture sometimes become curious about actual witchcraft.
00:24:48.319 --> 00:24:56.960
Meanwhile, practitioners who are already using these symbols find themselves negotiating the meanings that films and television have attached to them.
00:24:57.200 --> 00:25:00.640
Which brings me back, rather inevitably, to supernatural.
00:25:00.880 --> 00:25:08.160
I spent six seasons refusing to watch a television program because I cared about how it might represent a symbol that mattered to me.
00:25:08.400 --> 00:25:13.519
Then I discovered that the program understood the protective function I was worried it would erase.
00:25:14.240 --> 00:25:17.839
Years later, I'm still talking academically about that program.
00:25:18.240 --> 00:25:27.119
That's a tiny example of the relationship between representation and audience reception, but it's also precisely what Heck's position is interested in.
00:25:27.359 --> 00:25:34.079
The screen doesn't simply reflect what we believe about witches, it participates in creating those beliefs.
00:25:34.319 --> 00:25:42.079
Sometimes it perpetuates an old misconception, sometimes it rehabilitates an older meaning, whether deliberately or accidentally.
00:25:42.240 --> 00:25:50.400
And sometimes it creates an entirely new association that becomes so culturally familiar that we forget it came from fiction at all.
00:25:50.720 --> 00:25:53.920
The pentagram has survived all of those transformations.
00:25:54.160 --> 00:25:57.039
Perhaps that's why it remains such a powerful symbol.
00:25:57.279 --> 00:26:01.920
Not because it always meant one thing, but because it has meant many.
00:26:28.799 --> 00:26:34.960
The ancient symbol that could communicate mathematical harmony later appeared within Christian symbolism.
00:26:35.200 --> 00:26:47.119
Western occult practices subsequently developed other interpretations, while contemporary witches adopted and adapted the pentagram and pentacle within a diverse range of practices.
00:26:47.440 --> 00:26:53.920
Film and television then inherited that complicated history and did what popular culture does extraordinarily well.
00:26:54.160 --> 00:26:59.119
They simplified it into something audiences could recognize almost immediately.
00:26:59.359 --> 00:27:03.759
For some stories, the pentagram becomes a warning that something evil was happening.
00:27:04.000 --> 00:27:10.319
In others, including supernatural, the very same visual language could represent protection from that evil.
00:27:10.559 --> 00:27:20.160
And somewhere in between those interpretations sits the modern witch, wearing a symbol whose meaning may change depending entirely upon who is looking at her.
00:27:20.400 --> 00:27:22.720
Sometimes that person is another witch.
00:27:22.960 --> 00:27:25.119
Sometimes it's a television audience.
00:27:25.359 --> 00:27:30.720
And sometimes it's a street preacher who's extremely concerned about your eternal soul.
00:27:31.039 --> 00:27:36.720
If you enjoyed this episode, you can find more hexposition witches on screen wherever you get your podcasts.
00:27:37.039 --> 00:27:49.440
For centuries, Christian demonology insisted that the witch's power had to come from somewhere, and eventually, one particular suspect became almost impossible to avoid the Christian devil.
00:27:49.680 --> 00:27:57.440
And when cinema inherited that relationship, it gave us some rather memorable versions of him, including Jack Nicholson.
00:27:58.079 --> 00:28:07.440
So, next time, we're asking what happens when the witch makes a deal with the devil, and why popular culture became so convinced that the two belonged together.
00:28:07.680 --> 00:28:11.599
