00:01:10.479 --> 00:01:23.759
Um cap, yeah, yeah, you can have the game there and he just is explaining to be positive uh what is kingdom about.
00:01:24.799 --> 00:01:43.519
One of the things that he does uh while is he such uh in contrast to the teachings of the world, uh he says he haters the catholics, the moral of the kingdom.
00:01:55.439 --> 00:02:17.519
Um gives a number of those examples of how uh the Jewish culture of the day um showed in conflict with the culture of his kingdom that he become established.
00:02:18.800 --> 00:02:29.519
The second completely message that he gives is the all of that discourse, and that uh is recorded in Matthew 24 and 25.
00:02:29.840 --> 00:02:50.879
I can't believe that uh the saying of it occurs in Matthew 23 when he pronounced the chapter on Israel, but nevertheless, um again, um he points out how the world is going to interpret what he was about to experience in Calvary and in fact what was really happening.
00:02:51.439 --> 00:03:13.280
And one of the things that he pointed out is that the world was going to have all sorts of different theories about when he was coming again, and have all these really convoluted interpretations of scripture to uh you know give substance to their arguments.
00:03:13.519 --> 00:03:23.520
And then he finally says, the way that you know that uh it is me who has come again uh is I'm going to come like uh lightning in the skies.
00:03:23.759 --> 00:03:27.439
And of course, elsewhere in the scripture it talks about you coming in the clouds.
00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:38.879
And if you've ever been in a hill living here in New Street, you have experienced um thunderstorms where the uh clouds are nearer you than the lightning.
00:03:39.039 --> 00:03:47.359
The lightning is flashing um uh through the clouds, and of course, what that does is it lights up the clouds from horizon to horizon.
00:03:47.599 --> 00:04:03.039
And so what he's saying is the way that you will know that it's me is not by someone telling you, you know, you've got to go to uh this location over here, and I'm gonna be over there, and that's where I'm going to uh uh descend to.
00:04:03.439 --> 00:04:15.439
He said the way that you will know it's me is I'm going to occur in an instant at the speed of light, and I'm going to be everywhere present at the same time.
00:04:15.919 --> 00:04:17.039
That's how we'll know.
00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:27.600
So once again, in the Sermon on the Mount, he's saying the world has all kinds of notions about my kingdom on the hand.
00:04:28.079 --> 00:04:29.279
Most of them are wrong.
00:04:29.680 --> 00:04:31.199
Most of them are wrong.
00:04:32.319 --> 00:04:38.159
Then the third message that uh link um is in the departing message.
00:04:38.240 --> 00:04:40.639
And it begins in John chapter 14.
00:04:40.720 --> 00:04:56.399
And I would like to kind of um just present to you this evening for a few moments kind of an overview of uh at least the first two parts of this message, chapters 14 and 15.
00:04:57.279 --> 00:05:08.000
And I want to uh begin by reading uh the uh first verse, which I believe sets the tone for all that follows.
00:05:08.399 --> 00:05:10.960
He says, let not your hearts be troubled.
00:05:11.120 --> 00:05:15.519
If you believe in God, believe also in me.
00:05:16.159 --> 00:05:36.799
Now that's an interesting statement because it obviously um Jesus, who knows, um knows our hearts and certainly knew the frame of mind of the apostles that he was speaking to here, um, that when he said, Let not your hearts be troubled, there's more than an implication there.
00:05:36.879 --> 00:05:40.480
He's stating a fact that their hearts were troubled.
00:05:40.720 --> 00:05:48.240
And the reason that their hearts were troubled is they still didn't know how to think about Jesus.
00:05:49.600 --> 00:05:55.759
Notice he says, ye believe in God, believe also in me.
00:05:56.639 --> 00:06:08.399
Now, the struggle that they would have had is that uh the Jewish concept of God didn't make place for a trinity.
00:06:09.039 --> 00:06:41.600
They believed in the spirit of God, but they believed the spirit of God was a manifestation or a force that God exercised to convey understanding and to perform extraordinary events in a providential way, um, that those things were done by the spirit of God, but it was God who was exercising his spirit as a force to provide whatever the spirit was supplying at the time.
00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:52.799
So the notion that the spirit of God is a person of God was a completely foreign concept to the Jews in that day.
00:06:53.600 --> 00:07:05.600
Not only so, the notion that God would have a son was altogether heresy as far as the Jews were concerned.
00:07:05.840 --> 00:07:15.759
And I want to put this in a little cultural perspective of how a Jew might have thought about um Jesus being the son of the living God.
00:07:17.360 --> 00:07:27.279
Because God's having sons was not foreign to pagan religion in the days of the Jews.
00:07:27.759 --> 00:07:56.159
For instance, um Hercules was the son, I believe, of Zeus by a human woman, and Romulus and Remus, who were supposedly the founders of the city nation of Rome, were the sons of Mars, I mean it was perhaps Jupiter, I get those two confused, by uh uh a human woman.
00:07:56.480 --> 00:08:12.639
And so when someone would say that the Messiah was going to be the son of God or that Jesus uh is the Messiah and I'm the son of God, what a Jew was associated that with was pagan uh idolatry.
00:08:13.439 --> 00:08:14.879
Pagan idolatry.
00:08:15.279 --> 00:08:23.120
And indeed, they rejected any notion that uh that Christ was deity.
00:08:25.360 --> 00:08:32.799
And here is Christ, who was saying, don't be troubled.
00:08:32.879 --> 00:08:43.360
And of course, the reason that um they were troubled in heart is because um he had begun to reveal to them that he was going away.
00:08:43.840 --> 00:08:45.360
He was going away.
00:08:46.320 --> 00:09:03.919
And they were troubled by that because they had this concept of the kingdom that the Messiah would establish as a physical militant kingdom, um, and that the messiah would rule as David had ruled in Jerusalem.
00:09:05.439 --> 00:09:25.439
And so if he was going away, then their hearts were troubled because they didn't, they couldn't figure out how uh this could be the Messiah, he could be the Messiah and rule in his kingdom if he wasn't going to be present to rule in his kingdom.
00:09:25.679 --> 00:09:27.840
And so their hearts were troubled by that.
00:09:28.240 --> 00:09:30.000
Hearts were troubled by that.
00:09:31.519 --> 00:09:36.240
And he said the he said, let not your hearts be troubled.
00:09:36.559 --> 00:09:40.159
You believe in God, believe also in me.
00:09:40.720 --> 00:09:44.319
The significance of that statement is this.
00:09:45.199 --> 00:10:15.360
He's saying the way that you believe in God, the reverence that you hold God in, the awesomeness that you ascribe to God, the power of God, the knowledge of God, the wisdom of God, all of those things that with Jewish tradition, you come down through the centuries with some understanding of how great God is.
00:10:15.919 --> 00:10:17.279
Think of me that way.
00:10:18.319 --> 00:10:19.839
Think of me that way.
00:10:20.959 --> 00:10:24.559
Now, that would have been tough for a Jew.
00:10:25.199 --> 00:10:27.120
That would have been tough for a Jew.
00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:47.199
What the Savior is doing here is he is establishing the unity of the Godhead, because a little bit later on down here, he's going to say, and he's going to pray to the Father, and the Father will send the comforter, and then he tells us who the comforter is.
00:10:47.360 --> 00:10:49.600
He says, I will come to you.
00:10:50.000 --> 00:11:03.759
So he said, the way you think about the Father as God, you think about me, the Son as God, and the way that you think about the comforter who is going to come, you think about me as God.
00:11:04.799 --> 00:11:18.000
So he is establishing the unity of the Godhead in three persons, and his purpose in doing that is to establish a continuity in the kingdom.
00:11:18.240 --> 00:11:20.159
To establish a continuity.
00:11:20.480 --> 00:11:28.319
In other words, he's saying, I have the same power that the Father has.
00:11:29.039 --> 00:11:31.759
I have the same power that the Father has.
00:11:32.879 --> 00:11:36.959
I have the same power as the Holy Ghost has.
00:11:38.559 --> 00:11:58.399
And in as much as the Father has all power and is the ruler of the universe, and yet is not limited to being here on earth, it's really not necessary for me to be here on earth in order for the kingdom to continue.
00:11:59.279 --> 00:12:00.240
You see that?
00:12:01.600 --> 00:12:03.600
That's a really important point.
00:12:04.480 --> 00:12:20.319
Once he establishes that point, he brings the apostles and by extension, disciples, believers, followers of Jesus Christ, he brings us into that continuity.
00:12:20.559 --> 00:12:22.639
He brings us into that continuity.
00:12:23.039 --> 00:12:27.439
The way he does it is.
00:23:10.560 --> 00:23:15.120
If you sin lowfully, there remaineth the more sacrifice for sin.
00:23:15.680 --> 00:23:22.240
But a certain fearful expectation of the wrath of God.
00:23:25.040 --> 00:23:29.440
And then he says, He that despised Moses' law died without mercy.
00:23:29.600 --> 00:23:35.440
How much sore punishment suppose you shall he found worthy who had trampled on his foot?
00:23:36.160 --> 00:23:43.120
Christ and counted the blood of the covenant and a little unholy thing.
00:23:43.600 --> 00:23:49.759
And has been spiteful, despiteful toward the Holy Ghost.
00:23:52.880 --> 00:23:55.840
And there's an example of that in scripture.
00:23:56.560 --> 00:24:07.840
You see, a sorer punishment than a sentence of death is to be so miserable that you want to be dead.
00:24:12.560 --> 00:24:14.960
And there's an example of that in scripture.
00:24:15.600 --> 00:24:17.759
The example is King Saul.
00:24:18.480 --> 00:24:20.000
This King Saul.
00:24:21.920 --> 00:24:40.160
Who because of his disobedience, when the Lord had told him to engage in war in a certain way and not to leave any survivors, and he allowed the people to plunder and take captives.
00:24:41.120 --> 00:24:48.000
And when Samuel came to him and challenged him about that, Saul just kind of blew him off.
00:24:48.880 --> 00:24:53.440
And Samuel said, Well, here's the deal.
00:24:53.680 --> 00:24:57.279
The Lord has cut you off from being king of Israel.
00:24:58.480 --> 00:25:04.080
And your lineage ends with you, so far as we king of Israel are concerned.
00:25:04.480 --> 00:25:12.880
And we know how Samuel went into battle, and when he was about to be captured, no doubt would have been tortured or made a spectacle.
00:25:13.279 --> 00:25:15.279
All sorts of bad things would happen to him.
00:25:15.360 --> 00:25:16.800
He fell on the sword.
00:25:17.360 --> 00:25:32.080
And so there is an example of someone that was cut off from the sword and found himself in such a miserable circumstance that death was preferable to living.
00:25:34.160 --> 00:25:38.000
Another example in scripture is Ananias and Sapphira.
00:25:38.800 --> 00:25:40.400
Ananias and Sapphira.
00:25:42.640 --> 00:25:57.040
Who lied to the church, and they pretended they were serving the Lord and at the same time they were lying about their service to the Lord.
00:25:57.360 --> 00:26:01.200
So they uh Peter said they lied to the Holy Ghost.
00:26:01.600 --> 00:26:08.080
And that was a serious matter with the Lord, and their lives ended.
00:26:13.519 --> 00:26:16.560
So how is that different than being purged?
00:26:17.040 --> 00:26:19.519
How is that different than being purged?
00:26:19.920 --> 00:26:22.160
Well, we know how purging works.
00:26:22.480 --> 00:26:36.080
The way purging works is if you have a tree that has a branch that is not healthy or not producing, you cut it off because you don't want nutrition going to that branch if it's not going to produce fruit.
00:26:36.240 --> 00:26:41.360
Incidentally, here's something to understand about producing fruit.
00:26:42.960 --> 00:26:52.880
There's never been a piece of fruit produced that was produced for the benefit of the vine that produced it.
00:26:54.640 --> 00:26:55.920
Think about that.
00:26:59.279 --> 00:27:04.800
So that if we are, and see that's that's what Ananias and Sapphira were doing.
00:27:04.880 --> 00:27:17.200
They were wanting the praise of other church members for the great sacrifice that they had made by selling their land and giving all the proceeds to the church, and they held some back.
00:27:33.600 --> 00:27:51.120
And so if we engage in activity that is for my benefit and not to God's glory, then no fruit is being produced.
00:27:51.519 --> 00:27:58.480
Because the fruit that you produce is to God's glory and to the benefit of others.
00:27:59.519 --> 00:28:01.440
To the benefit of others.
00:28:21.519 --> 00:28:24.720
And that there was no man his equal.
00:28:24.880 --> 00:28:33.759
Um, so far as uh you know his piety was concerned, we're uh dealing with evil, we're dealing with evil.
00:28:35.840 --> 00:28:49.360
But Job had a problem, and it's a problem that we all suffer from, and part of the problem is that when we have this problem, most of the time we're blind to the fact that we have this problem.
00:28:49.920 --> 00:28:53.440
And somehow it has to be brought to our attention.
00:28:53.840 --> 00:28:58.560
Job was righteous in his own eyes, is what the scriptures tell us.
00:28:58.800 --> 00:29:01.440
He was righteous in his own eyes.
00:29:03.440 --> 00:29:21.840
My understanding of that is that Job looked at how the Lord was blessing him and was comparing the blessings that he had from the Lord with the blessings that other people might have from the Lord, and he was taking some credit to himself for the blessings.
00:29:21.920 --> 00:29:24.000
He was righteous in his own eyes.
00:29:24.240 --> 00:29:26.000
The credit all belonged to the Lord.
00:29:26.080 --> 00:29:39.360
It was uh, you know, all of the blessings came from the Lord, they were his to give, they were his to withhold, um, and he did it for his own purpose, not in order for Job to be conceited about it.
00:29:41.279 --> 00:29:44.080
But he was righteous in his own eyes.
00:29:44.880 --> 00:29:51.279
And the Lord started taking things out of Job's life.
00:29:51.519 --> 00:29:54.560
He started purging his life.
00:29:56.320 --> 00:30:17.680
Now, the interesting thing about it is that Job maintained his integrity toward God so far as never cursing God, um, never speaking ill of God in any way, um, he maintained his piety toward the Lord, but the Lord kept taking things out of his life.
00:30:18.880 --> 00:30:22.240
And it was painful for Job, and he wasn't happy with it.
00:30:22.480 --> 00:30:28.480
And he wasn't getting any help from his friends who were miserable comforters.
00:30:30.320 --> 00:30:40.560
And finally, when um all the dust had settled, so to speak, the Lord had taken everything out of his life that uh was necessary.
00:30:40.960 --> 00:31:00.320
Um all of his friends had come and offered their take on things and given their advice, and none of that had uh given any comfort to Job or changed the circumstance in any way, so that uh you know there was no place to turn to at that point, and that's when the Lord spoke to him.
00:31:02.320 --> 00:31:05.840
See, Job had to come to the end of himself.
00:31:06.160 --> 00:31:14.240
And coming to the end of himself was also to understand that his friends could not fix this problem for him.
00:31:14.480 --> 00:31:19.120
They didn't even understand that they were suffering from the same problem.
00:31:24.320 --> 00:31:29.600
And so finally, the Lord had Job's attention.
00:31:29.680 --> 00:31:32.080
And that's you know, that's how purging works.
00:31:32.240 --> 00:31:33.759
That's how purging works.
00:31:34.000 --> 00:31:39.680
The Lord begins to clear things out of our lives that are confusing our discipleship.
00:31:43.680 --> 00:31:47.920
And so he began to speak to Job.
00:31:48.800 --> 00:31:52.320
And up to that time, Job had had quite a bit to say.
00:31:53.200 --> 00:31:58.560
But when the Lord started speaking, Job put his hand over his mouth.
00:32:03.600 --> 00:32:16.720
And finally, when the Lord had finished with describing his power and his wisdom.
00:32:18.560 --> 00:32:29.680
And no doubt, as he was explaining those things and he said, you know, were you there when I created the heavens and the earth?
00:32:30.000 --> 00:32:31.680
Tell me how I did that.
00:32:34.320 --> 00:32:36.480
Can you control the Bible?
00:32:38.240 --> 00:32:39.680
How did you do that?
00:32:43.440 --> 00:32:52.400
And Job, as the Lord revealed more of himself to Job, Job came to see himself as less.
00:32:53.600 --> 00:32:55.440
He became to see himself as less.
00:32:59.680 --> 00:33:04.320
And finally, he made this confession.
00:33:05.279 --> 00:33:10.160
He said, I know you by the hearing of my ear.
00:33:13.279 --> 00:33:17.440
But now I see you with my eye.
00:33:19.040 --> 00:33:30.480
The point that Job is making there is, you know, his his regard for the Lord in the past had been from a perspective of renown.
00:33:30.720 --> 00:33:32.080
God is famous, you know.
00:33:32.960 --> 00:33:36.080
I understand my blessings come from him, you know.
00:33:36.400 --> 00:33:39.920
But um I don't understand the significance of that.
00:33:40.640 --> 00:33:43.200
I don't understand the significance of that.
00:33:45.519 --> 00:33:55.759
But he said, now that you've gotten my attention by getting all the things out of my life that I was using to prove what a wonderful person I am.
00:33:57.279 --> 00:34:10.400
And it's just me and you, I see myself differently because I now see you and I understand what righteousness is.
00:34:12.480 --> 00:34:13.920
In seeing you.
00:34:14.800 --> 00:34:28.800
And so he was purged, and of course, we know the rest of that story that um the Lord blessed him abundantly, that you know the fruit of God's blessing abounded in his life.
00:34:29.840 --> 00:34:35.519
Another example, this is again gets back to our lesson here.
00:34:35.759 --> 00:34:38.320
Another example of purging is Peter.
00:34:39.360 --> 00:34:40.400
Is Peter?
00:34:40.960 --> 00:34:47.840
We know that Peter needed to be purged because Jesus said, When thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
00:34:48.239 --> 00:34:52.639
You know, Peter needed a shift in perspective.
00:34:53.039 --> 00:34:56.880
Now art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
00:34:59.360 --> 00:35:14.719
Peter is an interesting fellow, and I want you to understand, I'm not, uh I don't intend it to be understood that I am criticizing Peter's sincerity and devotion.
00:35:15.759 --> 00:35:27.359
But Peter was conflicted because of his personality, and also because of the culture around him and the influence of the culture around him.
00:35:28.000 --> 00:35:29.440
He was conflicted.
00:35:30.319 --> 00:35:36.159
And so, on the one hand, he was able to say, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God.
00:35:36.799 --> 00:35:49.519
And in the same setting, in the same continuation of the conversation, when Jesus began to uh say what was going to occur to him, Jesus says that Peter took and shook him.
00:35:50.639 --> 00:35:52.239
Can you imagine that?
00:35:53.679 --> 00:35:54.960
You know, not so.
00:35:56.719 --> 00:35:58.719
You know, think about the implications of that.
00:35:58.879 --> 00:36:04.719
Peter is Jesus is saying, I'm going to the cross to die for your sins.
00:36:05.519 --> 00:36:09.519
And Peter is saying, no, that's not so.
00:36:09.679 --> 00:36:15.359
You know, that does not fit my concept of who the Messiah is.
00:36:16.559 --> 00:36:23.679
And of course, we see the influence of Jewish culture on Peter at the Mount of Transfiguration.
00:36:24.639 --> 00:36:41.599
Because at the Mount of Transfiguration, when Jesus is conversing with Elijah and Moses, and Peter and John, and I forget who the third one was, James, were allowed to be there and to witness this amazing event.
00:36:42.559 --> 00:36:45.440
Peter just couldn't contain himself.
00:36:50.799 --> 00:36:54.079
You know, we all know people like that, don't we?
00:37:00.319 --> 00:37:03.279
He had to add something to the conversation.
00:37:04.799 --> 00:37:12.000
And in doing so, he told us something about the conversion that needed to occur to him.
00:37:13.119 --> 00:37:16.960
Because he said, I've got this figured out.
00:37:17.279 --> 00:37:19.839
I know what the kingdom is about now.
00:37:20.319 --> 00:37:22.079
I have it figured out.
00:37:22.399 --> 00:37:34.079
The kingdom is a temple to Jesus, a tabernacle to Jesus, a tabernacle to the prophets, and a tabernacle to the law.
00:37:35.599 --> 00:37:37.519
I've got it figured out.
00:37:38.079 --> 00:37:53.759
The way the kingdom is going to work is it's going to be equal parts, the traditions of the prophets, and the letter of the law, and the leadership of Jesus Christ, where the traditions of the law concerned.
00:37:53.839 --> 00:37:55.599
I've got it all figured out.
00:37:58.399 --> 00:38:03.440
The Lord said, Peter, this is the time you should be listening rather than talking.
00:38:05.279 --> 00:38:07.759
He said, This is my beloved son.
00:38:08.719 --> 00:38:10.239
Hear ye him.
00:38:12.159 --> 00:38:21.599
So Peter had this concept of the kingdom that was out of sync with what the kingdom actually is.
00:38:23.839 --> 00:38:28.879
And the Lord gives him a pretty good hint there that the kingdom is about my son.
00:38:29.039 --> 00:38:30.399
You just need to be listening to him.
00:38:30.719 --> 00:38:37.119
The traditions of the prophets and the details of the law will all be taken care of in him.
00:38:39.039 --> 00:38:39.920
In him.
00:38:41.199 --> 00:38:42.879
So just listen to him.
00:38:47.359 --> 00:38:58.559
And so when Jesus starts talking about being crucified, Peter can't fit that into his model of the kingdom.
00:39:00.000 --> 00:39:01.679
He can't make it work.
00:39:03.599 --> 00:39:12.960
And so Jesus, shortly after that, is now speaking to his apostles, and he says, Let not your hearts be troubled.
00:39:14.239 --> 00:39:16.399
Let not your hearts be troubled.
00:39:16.879 --> 00:39:20.399
You believe in God, believe also in you.
00:39:22.000 --> 00:39:26.239
He said, I'll send a comforter, and the comforter that I'm going to send you is me.
00:39:26.399 --> 00:39:27.679
I will come to you.
00:39:29.920 --> 00:39:41.599
He's saying, everything that you understand about God applies to Christ and applies to the Holy Spirit.
00:39:41.839 --> 00:39:47.199
And everything you understand about Christ applies to God and the Holy Spirit.
00:39:47.440 --> 00:39:53.279
And everything you understand about the Holy Spirit applies to God and applies to Christ.
00:39:53.440 --> 00:39:58.799
Now they have their separate office works, but in essence, they are one.
00:39:59.279 --> 00:40:04.399
There are three persons in one.
00:40:06.639 --> 00:40:13.839
Someone was last week, Cindy Texan asked me if I would explain that, if I would explain the Trinity.
00:40:14.079 --> 00:40:15.759
I wrote back and said no.
00:40:16.879 --> 00:40:18.239
I can't explain it.
00:40:19.199 --> 00:40:23.279
I can believe it, but I can't explain it.
00:40:24.719 --> 00:40:32.159
Because there's nothing in human experience that you know that we can compare it to.
00:40:53.199 --> 00:40:55.759
I can make my abode with you.
00:40:56.719 --> 00:41:05.119
But in order for me to make my abode in you, you have to be producing fruit.
00:41:05.440 --> 00:41:08.799
Because I'm divine, and that's what I do.
00:41:08.960 --> 00:41:11.119
I produce fruit in the branches.
00:41:13.119 --> 00:41:21.519
And the way you produce fruit is by loving me and keeping my commandments.
00:41:22.319 --> 00:41:24.480
And keeping my commandments.
00:42:08.239 --> 00:42:20.079
So that notion conveys all sorts of ideas of what it means for the Lord to take his abode with us and we to abide in him.
00:42:20.719 --> 00:42:31.279
But he gives us ways of, even though we can't understand exactly how that occurs, he gives us ways of understanding that it is occurring.
00:42:31.759 --> 00:42:32.879
That it is occurring.
00:42:33.199 --> 00:42:37.759
And he tells us what we must do in order for it to occur.
00:42:38.480 --> 00:42:42.559
And what we must do is love him and keep his commandments.
00:42:42.799 --> 00:42:49.119
That's what you do in order for the Lord to abide in you, and you abide in the Lord, in an experiential sense.
00:42:49.199 --> 00:42:55.199
That Jesus is talking about because he's talking about functioning as disciples in the kingdom.
00:42:57.679 --> 00:43:05.199
The way that we can know that is that we have joy.
00:43:08.159 --> 00:43:16.559
Because he said that he would give us joy, and that our joy would be full if we abide in him.
00:43:16.879 --> 00:43:20.239
And we mentioned to you what we what he meant by joy being full.
00:43:20.319 --> 00:43:31.920
But there is a uh there is a happy disposition that the child of God has when he's serving the Lord because the Lord is proving.
00:43:32.960 --> 00:43:35.839
And so there is a happy perspective.
00:43:36.079 --> 00:43:39.279
Even if you're struggling, it's still there.
00:43:40.079 --> 00:43:43.839
Even if you're struggling, it's still there.
00:43:45.359 --> 00:43:54.480
And the other thing is that it will give you a peaceful perspective.
00:43:55.199 --> 00:43:58.480
It will give you a peaceful demeanor.
00:43:58.719 --> 00:44:02.079
You're not going to go around angry all the time.
00:44:02.239 --> 00:44:04.559
You're not going to go around frustrated all the time.
00:44:04.719 --> 00:44:14.319
You're not going to engage in rogue rage, for instance, because if you're engaging in road rage, you're certainly not joyful and you're certainly not experiencing peace.
00:44:26.960 --> 00:44:47.839
And in serving the Lord, you have joy from the perspective of pleasing God and God being glorified and him conveying glorious joy to you.
00:44:49.920 --> 00:44:51.839
And that will make you content.
00:44:52.719 --> 00:44:59.279
It will give you contentment that is untouchable by what's going on around you.
00:45:01.359 --> 00:45:12.480
So this evening, I would like for you to think about this because the downside of this, you know, we're going to go through some purging because we all have issues that we struggle with.
00:45:12.639 --> 00:45:14.799
We all have sin issues that we struggle with.
00:45:14.960 --> 00:45:24.559
And so there's going to be purging so that we can eliminate the sin issues, and that will give us another area of our lives where we can produce fruit.
00:45:27.759 --> 00:45:33.199
And it's better to go through that kind of purging than to cut off.
00:45:36.960 --> 00:45:42.559
The scary part of this is the third example of cutting off.
00:45:43.839 --> 00:45:48.000
The third example of cutting off is Israel.
00:45:50.319 --> 00:45:51.599
It's Israel.
00:45:52.239 --> 00:45:55.759
And it's Israel in Matthew 23.
00:45:56.639 --> 00:46:07.839
And it's those people who exist today who trace their lineage back to those Jews in that day and who live in that Jewish culture today.
00:46:08.239 --> 00:46:09.759
It's those folks too.
00:46:10.000 --> 00:46:11.279
They're still cut off.
00:46:12.480 --> 00:46:16.000
Now I want to ask yourself, ask yourself this.
00:46:17.920 --> 00:46:20.159
Where would you feel more safe?
00:46:21.039 --> 00:46:25.839
Here in the United States of America or living over in the Gospel.
00:46:26.879 --> 00:46:28.799
That's a no-brainer question.
00:46:29.679 --> 00:46:30.000
Okay.
00:46:30.719 --> 00:46:47.519
My point is that when the Lord cut them off, he left them to the description that the apostle uh that Jesus gives us here, and I'll I'll uh uh end with this.
00:46:48.079 --> 00:47:04.319
He says, he says in chapter 15 that when they're cut off, um that they're thrown out, and men gather them up and cast them into the fire.
00:47:04.719 --> 00:47:06.159
Cast them into the fire.
00:47:06.319 --> 00:47:14.000
That's what's been going on with Israel and with the Jewish people for the last 2,000 years.
00:47:14.639 --> 00:47:17.599
They've been repeatedly cast in fire.
00:47:18.639 --> 00:47:22.639
That's how terrible the cutting off can be.
00:47:23.359 --> 00:47:26.960
And we all stand in jeopardy of that.
00:47:27.359 --> 00:47:32.879
And the only way that we can avoid that is by producing fruit.
00:47:33.440 --> 00:47:38.960
And we produce fruit by abiding in Christ who is divine.
00:47:40.000 --> 00:47:43.920
And we abide in Christ by loving and keeping his commandments.
00:47:44.079 --> 00:47:45.359
God bless you, we think.
00:01:10.479 --> 00:01:23.759
Um cap, yeah, yeah, you can have the game there and he just is explaining to be positive uh what is kingdom about.
00:01:24.799 --> 00:01:43.519
One of the things that he does uh while is he such uh in contrast to the teachings of the world, uh he says he haters the catholics, the moral of the kingdom.
00:01:55.439 --> 00:02:17.519
Um gives a number of those examples of how uh the Jewish culture of the day um showed in conflict with the culture of his kingdom that he become established.
00:02:18.800 --> 00:02:29.519
The second completely message that he gives is the all of that discourse, and that uh is recorded in Matthew 24 and 25.
00:02:29.840 --> 00:02:50.879
I can't believe that uh the saying of it occurs in Matthew 23 when he pronounced the chapter on Israel, but nevertheless, um again, um he points out how the world is going to interpret what he was about to experience in Calvary and in fact what was really happening.
00:02:51.439 --> 00:03:13.280
And one of the things that he pointed out is that the world was going to have all sorts of different theories about when he was coming again, and have all these really convoluted interpretations of scripture to uh you know give substance to their arguments.
00:03:13.519 --> 00:03:23.520
And then he finally says, the way that you know that uh it is me who has come again uh is I'm going to come like uh lightning in the skies.
00:03:23.759 --> 00:03:27.439
And of course, elsewhere in the scripture it talks about you coming in the clouds.
00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:38.879
And if you've ever been in a hill living here in New Street, you have experienced um thunderstorms where the uh clouds are nearer you than the lightning.
00:03:39.039 --> 00:03:47.359
The lightning is flashing um uh through the clouds, and of course, what that does is it lights up the clouds from horizon to horizon.
00:03:47.599 --> 00:04:03.039
And so what he's saying is the way that you will know that it's me is not by someone telling you, you know, you've got to go to uh this location over here, and I'm gonna be over there, and that's where I'm going to uh uh descend to.
00:04:03.439 --> 00:04:15.439
He said the way that you will know it's me is I'm going to occur in an instant at the speed of light, and I'm going to be everywhere present at the same time.
00:04:15.919 --> 00:04:17.039
That's how we'll know.
00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:27.600
So once again, in the Sermon on the Mount, he's saying the world has all kinds of notions about my kingdom on the hand.
00:04:28.079 --> 00:04:29.279
Most of them are wrong.
00:04:29.680 --> 00:04:31.199
Most of them are wrong.
00:04:32.319 --> 00:04:38.159
Then the third message that uh link um is in the departing message.
00:04:38.240 --> 00:04:40.639
And it begins in John chapter 14.
00:04:40.720 --> 00:04:56.399
And I would like to kind of um just present to you this evening for a few moments kind of an overview of uh at least the first two parts of this message, chapters 14 and 15.
00:04:57.279 --> 00:05:08.000
And I want to uh begin by reading uh the uh first verse, which I believe sets the tone for all that follows.
00:05:08.399 --> 00:05:10.960
He says, let not your hearts be troubled.
00:05:11.120 --> 00:05:15.519
If you believe in God, believe also in me.
00:05:16.159 --> 00:05:36.799
Now that's an interesting statement because it obviously um Jesus, who knows, um knows our hearts and certainly knew the frame of mind of the apostles that he was speaking to here, um, that when he said, Let not your hearts be troubled, there's more than an implication there.
00:05:36.879 --> 00:05:40.480
He's stating a fact that their hearts were troubled.
00:05:40.720 --> 00:05:48.240
And the reason that their hearts were troubled is they still didn't know how to think about Jesus.
00:05:49.600 --> 00:05:55.759
Notice he says, ye believe in God, believe also in me.
00:05:56.639 --> 00:06:08.399
Now, the struggle that they would have had is that uh the Jewish concept of God didn't make place for a trinity.
00:06:09.039 --> 00:06:41.600
00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:52.799
So the notion that the spirit of God is a person of God was a completely foreign concept to the Jews in that day.
00:06:53.600 --> 00:07:05.600
Not only so, the notion that God would have a son was altogether heresy as far as the Jews were concerned.
00:07:05.840 --> 00:07:15.759
And I want to put this in a little cultural perspective of how a Jew might have thought about um Jesus being the son of the living God.
00:07:17.360 --> 00:07:27.279
Because God's having sons was not foreign to pagan religion in the days of the Jews.
00:07:27.759 --> 00:07:56.159
For instance, um Hercules was the son, I believe, of Zeus by a human woman, and Romulus and Remus, who were supposedly the founders of the city nation of Rome, were the sons of Mars, I mean it was perhaps Jupiter, I get those two confused, by uh uh a human woman.
00:07:56.480 --> 00:08:12.639
And so when someone would say that the Messiah was going to be the son of God or that Jesus uh is the Messiah and I'm the son of God, what a Jew was associated that with was pagan uh idolatry.
00:08:13.439 --> 00:08:14.879
Pagan idolatry.
00:08:15.279 --> 00:08:23.120
And indeed, they rejected any notion that uh that Christ was deity.
00:08:25.360 --> 00:08:32.799
And here is Christ, who was saying, don't be troubled.
00:08:32.879 --> 00:08:43.360
And of course, the reason that um they were troubled in heart is because um he had begun to reveal to them that he was going away.
00:08:43.840 --> 00:08:45.360
He was going away.
00:08:46.320 --> 00:09:03.919
And they were troubled by that because they had this concept of the kingdom that the Messiah would establish as a physical militant kingdom, um, and that the messiah would rule as David had ruled in Jerusalem.
00:09:05.439 --> 00:09:25.439
And so if he was going away, then their hearts were troubled because they didn't, they couldn't figure out how uh this could be the Messiah, he could be the Messiah and rule in his kingdom if he wasn't going to be present to rule in his kingdom.
00:09:25.679 --> 00:09:27.840
And so their hearts were troubled by that.
00:09:28.240 --> 00:09:30.000
Hearts were troubled by that.
00:09:31.519 --> 00:09:36.240
And he said the he said, let not your hearts be troubled.
00:09:36.559 --> 00:09:40.159
You believe in God, believe also in me.
00:09:40.720 --> 00:09:44.319
The significance of that statement is this.
00:09:45.199 --> 00:10:15.360
He's saying the way that you believe in God, the reverence that you hold God in, the awesomeness that you ascribe to God, the power of God, the knowledge of God, the wisdom of God, all of those things that with Jewish tradition, you come down through the centuries with some understanding of how great God is.
00:10:15.919 --> 00:10:17.279
Think of me that way.
00:10:18.319 --> 00:10:19.839
Think of me that way.
00:10:20.959 --> 00:10:24.559
Now, that would have been tough for a Jew.
00:10:25.199 --> 00:10:27.120
That would have been tough for a Jew.
00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:47.199
What the Savior is doing here is he is establishing the unity of the Godhead, because a little bit later on down here, he's going to say, and he's going to pray to the Father, and the Father will send the comforter, and then he tells us who the comforter is.
00:10:47.360 --> 00:10:49.600
He says, I will come to you.
00:10:50.000 --> 00:11:03.759
So he said, the way you think about the Father as God, you think about me, the Son as God, and the way that you think about the comforter who is going to come, you think about me as God.
00:11:04.799 --> 00:11:18.000
So he is establishing the unity of the Godhead in three persons, and his purpose in doing that is to establish a continuity in the kingdom.
00:11:18.240 --> 00:11:20.159
To establish a continuity.
00:11:20.480 --> 00:11:28.319
In other words, he's saying, I have the same power that the Father has.
00:11:29.039 --> 00:11:31.759
I have the same power that the Father has.
00:11:32.879 --> 00:11:36.959
I have the same power as the Holy Ghost has.
00:11:38.559 --> 00:11:58.399
And in as much as the Father has all power and is the ruler of the universe, and yet is not limited to being here on earth, it's really not necessary for me to be here on earth in order for the kingdom to continue.
00:11:59.279 --> 00:12:00.240
You see that?
00:12:01.600 --> 00:12:03.600
That's a really important point.
00:12:04.480 --> 00:12:20.319
Once he establishes that point, he brings the apostles and by extension, disciples, believers, followers of Jesus Christ, he brings us into that continuity.
00:12:20.559 --> 00:12:22.639
He brings us into that continuity.
00:12:23.039 --> 00:12:27.439
The way he does it is.
00:23:10.560 --> 00:23:15.120
If you sin lowfully, there remaineth the more sacrifice for sin.
00:23:15.680 --> 00:23:22.240
But a certain fearful expectation of the wrath of God.
00:23:25.040 --> 00:23:29.440
And then he says, He that despised Moses' law died without mercy.
00:23:29.600 --> 00:23:35.440
How much sore punishment suppose you shall he found worthy who had trampled on his foot?
00:23:36.160 --> 00:23:43.120
Christ and counted the blood of the covenant and a little unholy thing.
00:23:43.600 --> 00:23:49.759
And has been spiteful, despiteful toward the Holy Ghost.
00:23:52.880 --> 00:23:55.840
And there's an example of that in scripture.
00:23:56.560 --> 00:24:07.840
You see, a sorer punishment than a sentence of death is to be so miserable that you want to be dead.
00:24:12.560 --> 00:24:14.960
And there's an example of that in scripture.
00:24:15.600 --> 00:24:17.759
The example is King Saul.
00:24:18.480 --> 00:24:20.000
This King Saul.
00:24:21.920 --> 00:24:40.160
Who because of his disobedience, when the Lord had told him to engage in war in a certain way and not to leave any survivors, and he allowed the people to plunder and take captives.
00:24:41.120 --> 00:24:48.000
And when Samuel came to him and challenged him about that, Saul just kind of blew him off.
00:24:48.880 --> 00:24:53.440
And Samuel said, Well, here's the deal.
00:24:53.680 --> 00:24:57.279
The Lord has cut you off from being king of Israel.
00:24:58.480 --> 00:25:04.080
And your lineage ends with you, so far as we king of Israel are concerned.
00:25:04.480 --> 00:25:12.880
And we know how Samuel went into battle, and when he was about to be captured, no doubt would have been tortured or made a spectacle.
00:25:13.279 --> 00:25:15.279
All sorts of bad things would happen to him.
00:25:15.360 --> 00:25:16.800
He fell on the sword.
00:25:17.360 --> 00:25:32.080
And so there is an example of someone that was cut off from the sword and found himself in such a miserable circumstance that death was preferable to living.
00:25:34.160 --> 00:25:38.000
Another example in scripture is Ananias and Sapphira.
00:25:38.800 --> 00:25:40.400
Ananias and Sapphira.
00:25:42.640 --> 00:25:57.040
Who lied to the church, and they pretended they were serving the Lord and at the same time they were lying about their service to the Lord.
00:25:57.360 --> 00:26:01.200
So they uh Peter said they lied to the Holy Ghost.
00:26:01.600 --> 00:26:08.080
And that was a serious matter with the Lord, and their lives ended.
00:26:13.519 --> 00:26:16.560
So how is that different than being purged?
00:26:17.040 --> 00:26:19.519
How is that different than being purged?
00:26:19.920 --> 00:26:22.160
Well, we know how purging works.
00:26:22.480 --> 00:26:36.080
The way purging works is if you have a tree that has a branch that is not healthy or not producing, you cut it off because you don't want nutrition going to that branch if it's not going to produce fruit.
00:26:36.240 --> 00:26:41.360
Incidentally, here's something to understand about producing fruit.
00:26:42.960 --> 00:26:52.880
There's never been a piece of fruit produced that was produced for the benefit of the vine that produced it.
00:26:54.640 --> 00:26:55.920
Think about that.
00:26:59.279 --> 00:27:04.800
So that if we are, and see that's that's what Ananias and Sapphira were doing.
00:27:04.880 --> 00:27:17.200
They were wanting the praise of other church members for the great sacrifice that they had made by selling their land and giving all the proceeds to the church, and they held some back.
00:27:33.600 --> 00:27:51.120
And so if we engage in activity that is for my benefit and not to God's glory, then no fruit is being produced.
00:27:51.519 --> 00:27:58.480
Because the fruit that you produce is to God's glory and to the benefit of others.
00:27:59.519 --> 00:28:01.440
To the benefit of others.
00:28:21.519 --> 00:28:24.720
And that there was no man his equal.
00:28:24.880 --> 00:28:33.759
Um, so far as uh you know his piety was concerned, we're uh dealing with evil, we're dealing with evil.
00:28:35.840 --> 00:28:49.360
But Job had a problem, and it's a problem that we all suffer from, and part of the problem is that when we have this problem, most of the time we're blind to the fact that we have this problem.
00:28:49.920 --> 00:28:53.440
And somehow it has to be brought to our attention.
00:28:53.840 --> 00:28:58.560
Job was righteous in his own eyes, is what the scriptures tell us.
00:28:58.800 --> 00:29:01.440
He was righteous in his own eyes.
00:29:03.440 --> 00:29:21.840
My understanding of that is that Job looked at how the Lord was blessing him and was comparing the blessings that he had from the Lord with the blessings that other people might have from the Lord, and he was taking some credit to himself for the blessings.
00:29:21.920 --> 00:29:24.000
He was righteous in his own eyes.
00:29:24.240 --> 00:29:26.000
The credit all belonged to the Lord.
00:29:26.080 --> 00:29:39.360
It was uh, you know, all of the blessings came from the Lord, they were his to give, they were his to withhold, um, and he did it for his own purpose, not in order for Job to be conceited about it.
00:29:41.279 --> 00:29:44.080
But he was righteous in his own eyes.
00:29:44.880 --> 00:29:51.279
And the Lord started taking things out of Job's life.
00:29:51.519 --> 00:29:54.560
He started purging his life.
00:29:56.320 --> 00:30:17.680
Now, the interesting thing about it is that Job maintained his integrity toward God so far as never cursing God, um, never speaking ill of God in any way, um, he maintained his piety toward the Lord, but the Lord kept taking things out of his life.
00:30:18.880 --> 00:30:22.240
And it was painful for Job, and he wasn't happy with it.
00:30:22.480 --> 00:30:28.480
And he wasn't getting any help from his friends who were miserable comforters.
00:30:30.320 --> 00:30:40.560
And finally, when um all the dust had settled, so to speak, the Lord had taken everything out of his life that uh was necessary.
00:30:40.960 --> 00:31:00.320
Um all of his friends had come and offered their take on things and given their advice, and none of that had uh given any comfort to Job or changed the circumstance in any way, so that uh you know there was no place to turn to at that point, and that's when the Lord spoke to him.
00:31:02.320 --> 00:31:05.840
See, Job had to come to the end of himself.
00:31:06.160 --> 00:31:14.240
And coming to the end of himself was also to understand that his friends could not fix this problem for him.
00:31:14.480 --> 00:31:19.120
They didn't even understand that they were suffering from the same problem.
00:31:24.320 --> 00:31:29.600
And so finally, the Lord had Job's attention.
00:31:29.680 --> 00:31:32.080
And that's you know, that's how purging works.
00:31:32.240 --> 00:31:33.759
That's how purging works.
00:31:34.000 --> 00:31:39.680
The Lord begins to clear things out of our lives that are confusing our discipleship.
00:31:43.680 --> 00:31:47.920
And so he began to speak to Job.
00:31:48.800 --> 00:31:52.320
And up to that time, Job had had quite a bit to say.
00:31:53.200 --> 00:31:58.560
But when the Lord started speaking, Job put his hand over his mouth.
00:32:03.600 --> 00:32:16.720
And finally, when the Lord had finished with describing his power and his wisdom.
00:32:18.560 --> 00:32:29.680
And no doubt, as he was explaining those things and he said, you know, were you there when I created the heavens and the earth?
00:32:30.000 --> 00:32:31.680
Tell me how I did that.
00:32:34.320 --> 00:32:36.480
Can you control the Bible?
00:32:38.240 --> 00:32:39.680
How did you do that?
00:32:43.440 --> 00:32:52.400
And Job, as the Lord revealed more of himself to Job, Job came to see himself as less.
00:32:53.600 --> 00:32:55.440
He became to see himself as less.
00:32:59.680 --> 00:33:04.320
And finally, he made this confession.
00:33:05.279 --> 00:33:10.160
He said, I know you by the hearing of my ear.
00:33:13.279 --> 00:33:17.440
But now I see you with my eye.
00:33:19.040 --> 00:33:30.480
The point that Job is making there is, you know, his his regard for the Lord in the past had been from a perspective of renown.
00:33:30.720 --> 00:33:32.080
God is famous, you know.
00:33:32.960 --> 00:33:36.080
I understand my blessings come from him, you know.
00:33:36.400 --> 00:33:39.920
But um I don't understand the significance of that.
00:33:40.640 --> 00:33:43.200
I don't understand the significance of that.
00:33:45.519 --> 00:33:55.759
But he said, now that you've gotten my attention by getting all the things out of my life that I was using to prove what a wonderful person I am.
00:33:57.279 --> 00:34:10.400
And it's just me and you, I see myself differently because I now see you and I understand what righteousness is.
00:34:12.480 --> 00:34:13.920
In seeing you.
00:34:14.800 --> 00:34:28.800
And so he was purged, and of course, we know the rest of that story that um the Lord blessed him abundantly, that you know the fruit of God's blessing abounded in his life.
00:34:29.840 --> 00:34:35.519
Another example, this is again gets back to our lesson here.
00:34:35.759 --> 00:34:38.320
Another example of purging is Peter.
00:34:39.360 --> 00:34:40.400
Is Peter?
00:34:40.960 --> 00:34:47.840
We know that Peter needed to be purged because Jesus said, When thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
00:34:48.239 --> 00:34:52.639
You know, Peter needed a shift in perspective.
00:34:53.039 --> 00:34:56.880
Now art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
00:34:59.360 --> 00:35:14.719
Peter is an interesting fellow, and I want you to understand, I'm not, uh I don't intend it to be understood that I am criticizing Peter's sincerity and devotion.
00:35:15.759 --> 00:35:27.359
But Peter was conflicted because of his personality, and also because of the culture around him and the influence of the culture around him.
00:35:28.000 --> 00:35:29.440
He was conflicted.
00:35:30.319 --> 00:35:36.159
And so, on the one hand, he was able to say, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God.
00:35:36.799 --> 00:35:49.519
And in the same setting, in the same continuation of the conversation, when Jesus began to uh say what was going to occur to him, Jesus says that Peter took and shook him.
00:35:50.639 --> 00:35:52.239
Can you imagine that?
00:35:53.679 --> 00:35:54.960
You know, not so.
00:35:56.719 --> 00:35:58.719
You know, think about the implications of that.
00:35:58.879 --> 00:36:04.719
Peter is Jesus is saying, I'm going to the cross to die for your sins.
00:36:05.519 --> 00:36:09.519
And Peter is saying, no, that's not so.
00:36:09.679 --> 00:36:15.359
You know, that does not fit my concept of who the Messiah is.
00:36:16.559 --> 00:36:23.679
And of course, we see the influence of Jewish culture on Peter at the Mount of Transfiguration.
00:36:24.639 --> 00:36:41.599
Because at the Mount of Transfiguration, when Jesus is conversing with Elijah and Moses, and Peter and John, and I forget who the third one was, James, were allowed to be there and to witness this amazing event.
00:36:42.559 --> 00:36:45.440
Peter just couldn't contain himself.
00:36:50.799 --> 00:36:54.079
You know, we all know people like that, don't we?
00:37:00.319 --> 00:37:03.279
He had to add something to the conversation.
00:37:04.799 --> 00:37:12.000
And in doing so, he told us something about the conversion that needed to occur to him.
00:37:13.119 --> 00:37:16.960
Because he said, I've got this figured out.
00:37:17.279 --> 00:37:19.839
I know what the kingdom is about now.
00:37:20.319 --> 00:37:22.079
I have it figured out.
00:37:22.399 --> 00:37:34.079
The kingdom is a temple to Jesus, a tabernacle to Jesus, a tabernacle to the prophets, and a tabernacle to the law.
00:37:35.599 --> 00:37:37.519
I've got it figured out.
00:37:38.079 --> 00:37:53.759
The way the kingdom is going to work is it's going to be equal parts, the traditions of the prophets, and the letter of the law, and the leadership of Jesus Christ, where the traditions of the law concerned.
00:37:53.839 --> 00:37:55.599
I've got it all figured out.
00:37:58.399 --> 00:38:03.440
The Lord said, Peter, this is the time you should be listening rather than talking.
00:38:05.279 --> 00:38:07.759
He said, This is my beloved son.
00:38:08.719 --> 00:38:10.239
Hear ye him.
00:38:12.159 --> 00:38:21.599
So Peter had this concept of the kingdom that was out of sync with what the kingdom actually is.
00:38:23.839 --> 00:38:28.879
And the Lord gives him a pretty good hint there that the kingdom is about my son.
00:38:29.039 --> 00:38:30.399
You just need to be listening to him.
00:38:30.719 --> 00:38:37.119
The traditions of the prophets and the details of the law will all be taken care of in him.
00:38:39.039 --> 00:38:39.920
In him.
00:38:41.199 --> 00:38:42.879
So just listen to him.
00:38:47.359 --> 00:38:58.559
And so when Jesus starts talking about being crucified, Peter can't fit that into his model of the kingdom.
00:39:00.000 --> 00:39:01.679
He can't make it work.
00:39:03.599 --> 00:39:12.960
And so Jesus, shortly after that, is now speaking to his apostles, and he says, Let not your hearts be troubled.
00:39:14.239 --> 00:39:16.399
Let not your hearts be troubled.
00:39:16.879 --> 00:39:20.399
You believe in God, believe also in you.
00:39:22.000 --> 00:39:26.239
He said, I'll send a comforter, and the comforter that I'm going to send you is me.
00:39:26.399 --> 00:39:27.679
I will come to you.
00:39:29.920 --> 00:39:41.599
He's saying, everything that you understand about God applies to Christ and applies to the Holy Spirit.
00:39:41.839 --> 00:39:47.199
And everything you understand about Christ applies to God and the Holy Spirit.
00:39:47.440 --> 00:39:53.279
And everything you understand about the Holy Spirit applies to God and applies to Christ.
00:39:53.440 --> 00:39:58.799
Now they have their separate office works, but in essence, they are one.
00:39:59.279 --> 00:40:04.399
There are three persons in one.
00:40:06.639 --> 00:40:13.839
Someone was last week, Cindy Texan asked me if I would explain that, if I would explain the Trinity.
00:40:14.079 --> 00:40:15.759
I wrote back and said no.
00:40:16.879 --> 00:40:18.239
I can't explain it.
00:40:19.199 --> 00:40:23.279
I can believe it, but I can't explain it.
00:40:24.719 --> 00:40:32.159
Because there's nothing in human experience that you know that we can compare it to.
00:40:53.199 --> 00:40:55.759
I can make my abode with you.
00:40:56.719 --> 00:41:05.119
But in order for me to make my abode in you, you have to be producing fruit.
00:41:05.440 --> 00:41:08.799
Because I'm divine, and that's what I do.
00:41:08.960 --> 00:41:11.119
I produce fruit in the branches.
00:41:13.119 --> 00:41:21.519
And the way you produce fruit is by loving me and keeping my commandments.
00:41:22.319 --> 00:41:24.480
And keeping my commandments.
00:42:08.239 --> 00:42:20.079
So that notion conveys all sorts of ideas of what it means for the Lord to take his abode with us and we to abide in him.
00:42:20.719 --> 00:42:31.279
But he gives us ways of, even though we can't understand exactly how that occurs, he gives us ways of understanding that it is occurring.
00:42:31.759 --> 00:42:32.879
That it is occurring.
00:42:33.199 --> 00:42:37.759
And he tells us what we must do in order for it to occur.
00:42:38.480 --> 00:42:42.559
And what we must do is love him and keep his commandments.
00:42:42.799 --> 00:42:49.119
That's what you do in order for the Lord to abide in you, and you abide in the Lord, in an experiential sense.
00:42:49.199 --> 00:42:55.199
That Jesus is talking about because he's talking about functioning as disciples in the kingdom.
00:42:57.679 --> 00:43:05.199
The way that we can know that is that we have joy.
00:43:08.159 --> 00:43:16.559
Because he said that he would give us joy, and that our joy would be full if we abide in him.
00:43:16.879 --> 00:43:20.239
And we mentioned to you what we what he meant by joy being full.
00:43:20.319 --> 00:43:31.920
But there is a uh there is a happy disposition that the child of God has when he's serving the Lord because the Lord is proving.
00:43:32.960 --> 00:43:35.839
And so there is a happy perspective.
00:43:36.079 --> 00:43:39.279
Even if you're struggling, it's still there.
00:43:40.079 --> 00:43:43.839
Even if you're struggling, it's still there.
00:43:45.359 --> 00:43:54.480
And the other thing is that it will give you a peaceful perspective.
00:43:55.199 --> 00:43:58.480
It will give you a peaceful demeanor.
00:43:58.719 --> 00:44:02.079
You're not going to go around angry all the time.
00:44:02.239 --> 00:44:04.559
You're not going to go around frustrated all the time.
00:44:04.719 --> 00:44:14.319
You're not going to engage in rogue rage, for instance, because if you're engaging in road rage, you're certainly not joyful and you're certainly not experiencing peace.
00:44:26.960 --> 00:44:47.839
And in serving the Lord, you have joy from the perspective of pleasing God and God being glorified and him conveying glorious joy to you.
00:44:49.920 --> 00:44:51.839
And that will make you content.
00:44:52.719 --> 00:44:59.279
It will give you contentment that is untouchable by what's going on around you.
00:45:01.359 --> 00:45:12.480
So this evening, I would like for you to think about this because the downside of this, you know, we're going to go through some purging because we all have issues that we struggle with.
00:45:12.639 --> 00:45:14.799
We all have sin issues that we struggle with.
00:45:14.960 --> 00:45:24.559
And so there's going to be purging so that we can eliminate the sin issues, and that will give us another area of our lives where we can produce fruit.
00:45:27.759 --> 00:45:33.199
And it's better to go through that kind of purging than to cut off.
00:45:36.960 --> 00:45:42.559
The scary part of this is the third example of cutting off.
00:45:43.839 --> 00:45:48.000
The third example of cutting off is Israel.
00:45:50.319 --> 00:45:51.599
It's Israel.
00:45:52.239 --> 00:45:55.759
And it's Israel in Matthew 23.
00:45:56.639 --> 00:46:07.839
And it's those people who exist today who trace their lineage back to those Jews in that day and who live in that Jewish culture today.
00:46:08.239 --> 00:46:09.759
It's those folks too.
00:46:10.000 --> 00:46:11.279
They're still cut off.
00:46:12.480 --> 00:46:16.000
Now I want to ask yourself, ask yourself this.
00:46:17.920 --> 00:46:20.159
Where would you feel more safe?
00:46:21.039 --> 00:46:25.839
Here in the United States of America or living over in the Gospel.
00:46:26.879 --> 00:46:28.799
That's a no-brainer question.
00:46:29.679 --> 00:46:30.000
Okay.
00:46:30.719 --> 00:46:47.519
My point is that when the Lord cut them off, he left them to the description that the apostle uh that Jesus gives us here, and I'll I'll uh uh end with this.
00:46:48.079 --> 00:47:04.319
He says, he says in chapter 15 that when they're cut off, um that they're thrown out, and men gather them up and cast them into the fire.
00:47:04.719 --> 00:47:06.159
Cast them into the fire.
00:47:06.319 --> 00:47:14.000
That's what's been going on with Israel and with the Jewish people for the last 2,000 years.
00:47:14.639 --> 00:47:17.599
They've been repeatedly cast in fire.
00:47:18.639 --> 00:47:22.639
That's how terrible the cutting off can be.
00:47:23.359 --> 00:47:26.960
And we all stand in jeopardy of that.
00:47:27.359 --> 00:47:32.879
And the only way that we can avoid that is by producing fruit.
00:47:33.440 --> 00:47:38.960
And we produce fruit by abiding in Christ who is divine.
00:47:40.000 --> 00:47:43.920
And we abide in Christ by loving and keeping his commandments.
00:47:44.079 --> 00:47:45.359
God bless you, we think.
