Extra Issues – Juni Ba pt. 1: Djeliya & Monkey Meat

Charlotte, the royal podcaster, and the last prince of podcasting, Manzack begin our two part series on the works of Juni Ba. On this episode we cover the first two major works by Ba.

Comics covered in this episode:
– Djeliya
– Monkey Meat

Topics discussed:
– Do all the influences Ba brings together in these comics equal more than the sum of their parts?
– Is Ba successful as an “ambassador” bringing West African folklore to non-African readers?
– Why even ask these questions when the answer is obviously “yes”? (Because I have to write something and I had no good jokes today!)

We’ll wrap up our series covering the work of Juni Ba next month with:
-Robin: Boy Wonder, The Unlikely Story of Felix and Macabber, & Mobilis

After that, we’re doing a six month series covering the work of Osuma Tezuka:

1. Metropolis & Astro Boy
2. Kimba the White Lion, Princess Knight, & Dororo
3. Swallowing the Earth, Apollo’s Song, Ode to Kirihito, The Book of Human Insects & MW
4. Ayako & Buddha
5. Black Jack
6. Message To Adolf & Phoenix
