EPISODE 4: COERCIVE CONTROL | EMPOWERHER: BECOMING HER 🎙️
Abuse doesn’t always start with a raised hand. Sometimes, it starts with silence.
In this episode, I’m talking about coercive control — the gradual process of using fear, punishment, manipulation, and power to control another person.
For me, it started with silent treatments and the withholding of love. When I didn’t do what he wanted, the affection changed. The communication changed. I learned that there were consequences for not meeting his expectations.
Over time, that control evolved into financial and physical punishment, while the emotional manipulation continued.
One of the hardest things to recognize is that the rules are rarely written down. You learn them through the consequences of breaking them.
In this episode, I share my experience with how coercive control develops, how punishment can become a tool of control, and how you can slowly lose your sense of freedom without fully realizing what’s happening.
We talk about:• The progression from emotional manipulation to other forms of abuse• Silent treatment and withholding affection as punishment• How fear and consequences can condition you to comply• Why you may begin changing your behavior to avoid a reaction• How control can become normalized over time• Recognizing the difference between healthy boundaries and controlling behavior• Reclaiming your voice, your autonomy, and your sense of self
If you’ve ever found yourself constantly walking on eggshells, rehearsing conversations in your head, or changing your behavior to keep someone else from getting upset, I want you to know that you’re not alone.
You deserve a relationship where love isn’t used as a reward, disagreement isn’t met with punishment, and your safety doesn’t depend on someone else’s mood.
Healing begins with recognizing what happened — and understanding that you were never responsible for managing someone else’s choice to abuse their power.
