Jeff: Welcome to Two Souls One Crypt. I'm Jeff Darko. And I'm Beth Graves. In this week's episode, this Halloween special, we're doing a creature double feature. Yes, creature double feature. We're going to talk the cycle and crawlers. Crawlers, but in yeah, in that order. yes, in that order. The cycle we don't want to spoil anything, so we're not going to talk about it as much as we will Crawlers. Crawlers, 'cause crawlers pfft Crawlers is pretty much what it is. It's just a spider movie. But yeah, the cycle's a little little more in depth and we don't want to ruin it w for anybody. So All right, so let's start the cycle. This is on shutter. Yeah. And do you want me to do the ratings real quick? Yeah. Okay. so real qu real fast, crawlers was fifty eight on Rotten Tomatoes, cycle was ninety five. thirty eight I thought we didn't cycle first. well Thirty eight for crawlers on the popcorn and sixty seven on the cycle. So I I read it backwards, but we're doing cycle first. So the cycle was what again? The cycle was ninety five. Ninety five. Mm-hmm. Okay. All right. You need more details on the cycle you want to give or? I'll just go through real quick. It was course came out this year, it was directed by Jordan Downey. And guess what else he directed? I already know, I told you, he did Thanksgiving. I didn't know that 'til somebody posted it on Facebook and they said that's a way to re said it was a way to redeem yourself 'cause they hated Thanksgiving. I did. I personally did. And that it was somewhere. But this was phenomenal compared to that movie for sure. You gotta start somewhere. So Thanksgiving, I thought it's a funny funny thing. It is but it's good for what it is. No, it's not. It really isn't. The cycle. I can't think of her name, but the main The main chick. Yeah, the main actor. She was she was on Daredevil. She was on a C S I episode, apparently. I thought she kinda gave me C S I vibes, which was interesting 'cause she's a forensic anthropologist in this movie. Yeah, so she I recognize her from Daredevil the Netflix and now Disney Plus show. I was like, Hey, that's I think Karen's her name on there. And then the other main dude was the guy from Burn Notice, Jeffrey Donovan and the cop between the cop. Yeah. That was the only big name actors that I recognized right off the bat. Yeah, so I saw Shutter posted on Twitter, Big Steve. Big Steve as as Joe Bob Briggs calls him, Stephen King. He said this was like Silence of the Lambs and the Thing. And I kinda agree with that. Yeah. I could see that. Yeah, it's kind of not as much Silence of the Lambs. But I mean it's does they do a lot with bodies and investigation. Yeah, if you like like crime scene stuff I do, like CSI and true crime and things like that, I think you enjoy this movie 'cause it kind of dives into that and then it has like a horror aspect to it as well. So Yeah, it's definitely give you the thing vibes. Yeah. And it really drew me in with that 'cause I was like this kind of stuff. So I was like right off the bat I was like, Yeah, this is interesting and of course like a there's some there's some twists and turns in it we won't ruin buttons. Yeah, I I love the fact that it was practical effects and not CGI. Yes. And they wanted it I read it they wanted it to be that way so they purposely made it practical effects and made wanted to go back to like the eighties look. Yes. Or it's kinda slimy and wet everything was in the eighties. Yes. And any kind of horror movie that had a creature in it. yeah. Yeah, definitely. It definitely hit that for me. And we'll give a little bit of details, but nothing. Yeah, well I mean, start off the the lady, the main lady, she's a f like I forensic anthropologist. They come to her because they found a body and it turns out it's her long lost friend. Well, they found two bodies. Two bodies, sorry. And they were investigating that and they found his body. Mhm. in the proximity of it and they don't know how he got there or why he got there 'cause he obviously didn't have anything to do with it 'cause he was like he like he'd been dead for a while. Right. They're like, why did your dad's body just show up all of sudden? Yes. And so they gotta kinda figure that out and then they find that at different scenes and That's all we're gonna say about that, I think. Well there is one interesting thing is I don't wanna give too much away. Okay. I was just gonna say about the about the maggots, but no. Okay, I won't mention it. Just say let's just say maggots and I'm just gonna leave it at that. Yeah, we're gonna we're not gonna give I say go in as blind as possible 'cause we did. We did. I didn't know I didn't know anything about it. I just know that Slasher Talk was like, Whatever you do today, stop what you're doing and watch this movie and that's exactly what we did. Yep, don't watch the trailer. Don't watch the show. Don't look up anything on it. Mm mm. Just click play on shutter if you have shutter. Yes. Just somewhere else. Yes. I guess. I don't know. Find it and watch it and don't look up anything and go in blind because it I think it's a it yeah, it's it's a roller coaster. 'Cause you're like, where's this going? Where's this going? and you're like up up up up and you're like waiting, waiting, waiting, and then boom. Yeah, and I think it's good to figure it out as they figure it out. Yes. And and it and I like that 'cause I'm I'm sitting there thinking, Yeah, what what the heck is going on? Yeah, and you know, and everything she's investigating, I'm like right there with her just like I do, like anytime I watch any crime show or CSI or anything, I'm also trying to f figure out the case and so yeah, I I I did like that. Yeah, at first she didn't wanna do anything with it and then she decides to help Mhm. And then she gets deeper into it. Yes. Then she gets like heavily involved in it and yeah, goes down the rabbit hole and finds out a lot of interesting things and digs up a lot of stuff from the past that she didn't expect to deal with. So yeah. Definitely, definitely worth worth a watch. Yes, I think so. there was something I was gonna say about it. Your thoughts overall on it. Without any details. I thought do you th I think it was everything was I thought was good about it. It was written well, it was directed well. Yes. Acted well. Uhhuh. The story w was good. Yes. I'm yeah. I mean probably you'll go ahead and read it. Well just any more thoughts you have on okay overall the movie besides giving any details away, I guess. Well, I I thought yeah, I thought the acting was great, I thought the story was great, definitely unique. kept my attention for the most part. Maybe to Yeah, this is definitely a a a very unique and I don't think it I've not seen in anything done like this story wise. No. And like you said, Big Steve liked it. You know, I'm a big fan of him as Joe Bob calls him. I'm a huge Stephen King fan. So yeah, anything he says to watch, I'm like sure, automatically. I don't even hesitate. I'm like I'm watching it. So yeah. I go Yeah, what do you think of the the creature in this one? I thought it was really good. since this is the creature feature. Devil feature. I liked it was the creature. You think it was done well? I thought it was done very well. Yes. Very, very good. Yeah, and it was di it's definitely got an eighties vibe to it. Yes it does. to the creature, the look of the creature that's I think that's probably why Stephen King enjoyed it too, 'cause I feel like he's like me. He's like he likes like he loves stranger things. He likes the old retro vibe. Practical effects. Practical effects, yes. Practical effects are always better. Yes. Yes. And I love and we were watching an old nightmare on Dem Street the other day and I was remembering how slimy and gross it was and I was like, but that's how it was in the eighties and I and it was great. And this is right there with it. Yeah. It was just yeah, it was gross but it was awesome. I kinda missed that. And I'm like, worse let's get back to the slimy eighties. And some people are taking us back there. Yeah. Okay. Anything else on the cycle where you want to rate it? I'm gonna rate it and I'm sure you're gonna recommend it. Absolutely. I'm not gonna give it my extreme highest rating. What is it, five? Five one out of five skulls. One out of five. I'm gonna definitely give it a four for sure. Four skulls? Yeah. I agree with that. Not because it's the best movie I've ever seen, but it is definitely one of the best movies and it's probably one of the best movies I've seen this year. Yeah, and it's one of the most unique I think it's it's been a while since we've had such a unique movie. well not really been that mu that long 'cause, we've had a couple of good ones come out. I've had a couple of good ones, but this was this was definitely For the movie, once you watch it, for the movie that it's involved around, it's definitely a unique twist on that sort of thing. Yes. Absolutely. And it it I didn't see it going there. No. So let's just put it at that. No, I did not expect it to be the type of movie that it was. No, not at all. Not at all. So that caught me completely off guard and that's why I I'm like, yes, I give it such a good rating. Yeah. Yeah, they did a good job of hiding what it was for as long as they could, I think. Yes, they did. And then it just was like, Wow, okay, wasn't expecting that. So love that. Yeah. And yeah, it's definitely a unique twist on it. Like I said, I didn't know I guess it would be true of what they do. I guess I don't I guess so. But yeah, it was it's it's very good, very good story. I feel like yeah, I feel like there's a lot of realistic stuff and not realistic stuff and yeah. Absolutely. Yeah, I give it I I'll agree, I'll give you four. Okay. I figured you'd rate it higher than that. No, I could say that it's not the best, but it's de it's d definitely not the worst. It's very good definitely the one of the the best ones of of the year. Definitely. I definitely put it in twenty twenty six top ten. Yeah, it's a top ten. Yeah. mm. It's definitely some of the other better than some of the others. Maybe toward the end of the year we'll go through our list and see w we'll give you a top ten. We'll do a top ten at the end in December. We'll go through and tell you what what our picks were for the year. Yeah, we could do that. this one's probably so far this one's in the top ten. It is definitely if you have shutter definitely check it out. If you haven't yet, 'cause it came out last Friday, I think it was released. And we watched it I think Saturday. Saturday. Yeah. So yeah, we w waited a day but Yeah. yeah, if you haven't watched it, definitely check it out. don't click the trailer, just click play. Yeah, just just go in blind. That's what we like to do as much as possible and not watch too much. I don't even know if they give anything away in a trailer. I don't know because I didn't watch it. I didn't watch the trailer either. I just watched Slasher Talk tell me to watch it and I was like, Okay, I'm done. Yeah. So go in. I think Joe Bob might have said cold on one of He went in cold on something, so go in cold, go in blind, go in whatever you call it. Right. definitely recommend checking out. The cycle. Check it out. All right, now on to the second creature of the creature double feature. crawlers. And this is a spider movie. Yeah, and at first I thought this was gonna be like Infest, I think it's called. Yes. Or Infestation or something like that. Something like that. It's kind of the same storyline, isn't it? Yeah, I think it's like a British movie or something, but it's definitely different. Well, this was directed by Angel Gomez Hernandez, which he is a Spanish director early too much. And then Matilda Lutz, which is the lady, the manager lady, the main lady. She played in the movie Rings back in twenty seventeen, which I do not remember her at all in. I haven't seen that movie in so long. I can't remember. I did but it's been it's been so long. And basically it's an outbreak of venomous spiders in an apartment building. Yeah, it's so it's kinda like the other one. I think you might go look it up real quick. I think it's called Infest or something. I looked it up. It was a spider movie. Or they got in the whole apartment building was full of spiders and I thought g is this gonna just be a remake, but it it is not. It starts like this guy shows up and he's kinda sick and got a big spot on his back. She infested. Okay, infested infested, so yes. Yeah, he's she finds a spider in her apartment and But no, it's an apartment she's fixing up. she's fixing up. But it's just an regular old spider and so she's like, he's Really into bugs or whatever. Yeah, I forget exactly he went to some dig and he just got back from but he's like a some kind of scientist or something. Something like that. And he has a collection of spiders and bugs and all. He's got this big huge nasty spot on his back, on his shoulder, back shoulder. And of course you know where that's going as soon as you see it. Yeah. I mean there's not this movie's pretty straightforward. Yeah, it's a pretty dead giveaway. You're like, okay. He's probably infested with spider and So he gets the spider other part button and he's Yeah, you just need me, just yell at me or whatever. Yeah. And next thing he collapses and falls over dead and pus starts running out of his wound and then all these little spiders start running out and they start running everywhere and that's what starts off. And that was all before the title sequence, I think. Yeah, that was yeah, that was j you're just right off the bat, straight to it. Yeah, they don't waste no time. No. And then she's we gotta get this building infested with spiders so they just Yeah, we gotta get we gotta get it going and then She's going around doing stuff and the the building is in terrible shape and then the is it the owner guy was telling her. Yeah, so she he leaves post it notes for her to fix everything or take this out or whatever, so she's the manager and she gets to live there for free but she has to fix up stuff and take care of the property and he tells her her job is to try to fill up full of tenants. Mhm. And she's like, Why don't you put a weight room or give free internet or some something to get some by people in here instead of just charging an arm and a leg in a shitty building. And then she finds the guy 'cause she goes to he's raising the rent. Yes. And so she's got to give a tenant notice to everybody. Mm-hmm. And she goes to that guy's apartment and he don't answer the door, so she finally goes in there and finds him dead. Of course gotta call the cops and get a cops involved and like, it might be some kind of airborne disease. We've got to quarantine this building 'til we figure out what's going on. Yeah. And then you know where it's going from there. And then she figures out that it's spiders. Yeah, so then here come all the little spider babies and they make more spiders and more spiders and more spiders. And me personally, I have extreme arachnophobia to the extreme. Like I am terrified of spiders and I was like, I don't know if I'm gonna make it through this movie. Yeah, if you don't like spiders, this movie will probably creep you the fuck out. Yes, it will. Because on the previews and I seen the the well not even the previews, just the poster where that woman's sleeping and it's hanging over her mouth. Yeah, that happens. That's in the movie. That's in the That's in the trailer and in the movie. It's in the movie, in the trailer, and yeah, you better be prepared for that. It keeps swinging and finally finally makes it to her mouth. Mm. But they start out, they give you a a little snippets that says how close you are to a spider at all times and all this stuff and there's probably one right under your chair and all this stuff. yeah, all this awful stuff. Set the mood right from the very beginning. Yeah, and l and speaking of spiders, y'all, and I'm telling you, and I'm terrified of And the last couple of weeks I was going into the closet to get some clothes to change, and anybody that knows me knows that I'm literally died of a heart attack. There was a wolf spider on and I wear scrub store. It was literally on my shirt top. Like literally took up the whole entire sleeve. Yeah, it was pretty big. It was huge. Yeah, we Jeff came and got him Took him outside, shook him off. He didn't d he didn't die. We didn't kill him or nothing. But I literally stopped breathing an o for about two seconds. So yeah. Yeah. yeah. If you're you don't like spiders and you could get through this movie 'cause you did, but it's definitely gonna like I it's gonna creep you the fuck out. I didn't and I can't say that I wasn't freaking out and I wasn't screaming a little bit in some parts 'cause it was just it was just a lot. they're running and then coming at you and my gosh. Yeah, this is pretty straightforward. Building gets infested, they gotta survive. I think they do is it forty eight hours? Yes. I think they tell they gotta stay quarantined or locked up or whatever for forty eight hours 'til they figure out what's going on and she finally she figures it out and leaves a or writes a note or whatever and tells the cop that it's not a disease, it's spiders. So then they finally bring in somebody to try to help, thank God. You're like, what is gonna happen? They're gonna stuck it in. Z but the zombies I always see the scene where there's zombies just keeps piling up on top of each other to make it over the wall. And at one scene they're locked in the the shower and they just keep they're doing that remind me of that 'cause they keep the spiders just keep climbing up each other to build a big mound to get over the the shower door. That was the worst part. And to get in there's like thousands and thousands of I mean it wouldn't matter at that point. It would not matter because I would already die I mean would seriously I would have had a panic attack. I was like, there's no way they're getting out of this. They're fucking dead. I would I wouldn't have made it that far. They make it out. No, I I won't tell you how I guess. No, we won't tell you that part, but good lord. They do get out of that. But yeah. The whole point is them to try to survive and get out of the building through the whole movie. But And there's some really gross, gory, nasty stuff in there. You know, if you like I said, if you freaked out by spiders and spider bites and spiders getting squished and Yeah, and there's a couple of jump scares in there. There's a couple of jump scares. Yeah, there's some jump scares. Definitely. Couple kills. To me, I watched, Rachnophobia. It's kinda gross. my gosh. I watched Arachnophobia as a kid. Nothing compared to this movie. Mm mm. I've never seen Arachnophobia. yeah. This movie's way worse to me. It was just a right that movie was and it wasn't as violent, but it was scary. This movie's Yeah. Yeah. And then the other movie that we watched Infested, it was Yeah, this one, which do you think's better? Do you remember Infested as I do remember Infested and I think I like this one better. I know I really liked the one chick, the the goth lady, the the the Dominatrix lady. yeah, yeah. She was probably my favorite part too. She was badass. She had a the gimp and the the basket. She goes in there and she's like, You need to you need to get out of here and she's like, I'm sorry, I have someone in the box and they're like, Yeah, she's like, We might need to get him. So they get the And that well there's a little twist. We won't tell you who was the who's. But yeah, that that part was funny. It's kinda funny when he comes out. But yeah, I loved her. She had her flamethrower and everything. I thought it was great. she was awesome. I was like, Well, that would probably that definitely would not be me as far as that goes, 'cause I said, I'm terrified of spiders. She's like, I I'm not I'm not letting She's a dominatrix. Right. She's like, I'm not letting take me down, but Yeah, she gets her little alcohol or perfume or something and starts making a flamethrower spraying and she's gonna get out of the building. Yeah, she's she's pretty awesome. But yeah, it was just yeah, it I like I said, it was like when I watched the chimp movie, I'm terrified of chimps as well and this it was like I was like, Okay, I gotta watch everything horror so I can talk about it and I was like, I gotta get through it. Yeah, yeah, it was a it was a decent movie, you think? Yeah, it was pretty good. I mean, like I said it's straightforward what it is, but it's not bad. I wouldn't say that it seen worse. D did it scare me? No. The jump scares and stuff, the thought of that actually happening to me would be scary. Yes. You know, if there was spiders all in my building, yeah, the building would I would be out in the building would be my Yeah, 'cause there's a couple of scenes where there's cobwebs everywhere as you gotta try to get through and I'm like, shit and there's spiders all over And I hate spider webs like that. my gosh, that freaks me out too. I don't know why. I just you remember that movie we watched a while back, it was it was on Sven Gulli too that Earth versus the spider? Yes. Yeah. I don't know why when we were watching this, I was thinking about that. I like, Are these spiders gonna be screaming like You know, that's that was going through my mind too and I was like, my god, that was just awful. I think as a no, caller's in on anything yet, is it? I was someone say it's on shutter, but it's not on shutter. It was at the theater. Yeah. It was at the theater. I streamed it somewhere. There's no way I would no. Yeah, I'm glad we didn't go to the theater. If you want to go to the theatre, it's not out now but No, I'm just saying like I would not. No, I would not. I didn't even really want to watch it at home because I like I said despire. I was interested in it but I was didn't really care about watching the theater. I'm glad we didn't. I didn't think it'd be that good as far as like, I gotta run to the theater and watch it. But yeah, I just mm mm. But no, overall, pretty decent. Yeah. Like I said, if you think this is a shot for shot remake of Infested, it's not. No. it's its own It's its own movie. And he did a good job with it. I really liked his story. I really liked it. It was good. Even though, like I said, spiders, no, not for me. But yeah. Why do you want to rate it? I'm gonna say probably two and a half on that one. That's what I was gonna say you was gonna say two and a half. Mm hmm. Because it was a good I mean th they they did it well, but and like I said, if you have somebody in your life or if you're terrified of spiders, I say give it a shot. Yeah, I'll say too, I'm right there with you. It's that and it wasn't the best, it wasn't the worst. It's No. It's a good watch. if you Mhm. I mean yeah, if you're definitely terrified of spiders, I mean it's gonna keep you up and definitely watch it. Definitely watch it for sure. And especially if you like if you did watch Aragnophobia when you were young like I did. Yeah, and give it a shot and see what you think. And if you watched Infected and you wanna check this one out as a website, you like that one and you should like this one. Yeah, I think this one was probably a little bit better in my opinion. But yeah, the story was good, like you said. So yeah, why not? So you say watch both. Watch both. Definitely watch cycle and go in blind on that for sure. The cycle's definitely better than two. Cycle is definitely better than last weekend's movie watching. Yes, and the crawlers will not be making it in the top ten, I'll tell you that. No no no. It might be top fifteen, maybe. No, it will not. It will not at all. Not for me. It might be we could well we could each make our own list. Well, I thought we was. okay. I was thinking we were just no, we'll make our own list and That's not It's two opinions in this crypt. That's true. You're right. So I'm making my list. We're one crypt, but we're two opinions. My list is not gonna have crawlers in it. Let's just put it that way. Your list is gonna might be we might agree on some, but you might not have a number one or a number five or whatever. That's true. So yeah, we'll get that together. Two opinions. Okay. Anything else on these two movies you want to throw in there before we get Happy Halloween to everyone. Yeah, happy Halloween. And it's our anniversary and Happy anniversary to us. Yep. And if you're watching us after Halloween, still happy Halloween 'cause Halloween is forever. That's right. All right. Until next time, creeps. I'm Jeff Darko and I'm Beth Graves
