And let's start turning stress into strength together.
00:00:51.840 --> 00:00:54.320
Now let's dive into today's episode.
00:00:55.200 --> 00:00:57.039
So welcome back, Funilla.
00:00:57.200 --> 00:01:01.200
And uh we are going to talk about adaptive response.
00:01:01.359 --> 00:01:01.600
Yeah.
00:01:01.920 --> 00:01:09.920
When you are really dealing with high-level challenges or setbacks, what can you do?
00:01:10.159 --> 00:01:10.799
Yeah.
00:01:12.159 --> 00:01:14.799
And it really is a game changer.
00:01:15.120 --> 00:01:18.879
So here I talk about having an adaptive response.
00:01:19.040 --> 00:01:19.280
Yeah.
00:01:19.519 --> 00:01:22.000
So I have a personal story to share if you don't mind.
00:01:22.319 --> 00:01:23.359
I'd love to hear that.
00:01:23.599 --> 00:01:32.640
So around 2013-14, I was going through some very high level of challenges related to workplace.
00:01:33.359 --> 00:01:41.760
And uh one of my friends, who was a psychiatrist, he suggested me to read the book Man's Search for Meaning.
00:01:42.319 --> 00:01:48.480
Man's Search for Meaning is written by Viktor Frankl around the Holocaust.
00:01:49.200 --> 00:01:51.200
Really a very empowering book.
00:01:51.840 --> 00:02:05.840
And what Viktor Frankel talks about is how he was when he was in the concentration camp, where unfortunately he had lost his wife and his entire family.
00:02:06.159 --> 00:02:13.360
So he started observing people who could deal even with the most challenging situations.
00:02:14.479 --> 00:02:23.520
So he said that between the stimulus and the response, there is a space.
00:02:24.400 --> 00:02:32.159
And in that space, if you can choose the response, that makes all the difference.
00:02:32.560 --> 00:02:40.479
And that is the last of human freedoms which nobody can take away from you.
00:02:41.039 --> 00:03:06.080
For example, somebody can be nasty to you, somebody can be angry with you, somebody can be abusive to you, but inside you, whether you feel offended, whether you feel humiliated, whether you feel unhappy, that response you still might choose.
00:03:07.360 --> 00:03:21.759
And what Victor Frankel said, that people who were able to exert that choice, not everybody can do that, but people who were able to do that, those are the people who could survive.
00:03:22.400 --> 00:03:39.439
So they gave the meaning to a particular event, they became a master of that meaning, and they could deal even in the most challenging of the crisis.
00:03:39.759 --> 00:03:40.000
Yeah.
00:03:41.280 --> 00:03:48.080
So if if your good fortune is that physically you're still there, you're still alive, what can you then do?
00:03:48.240 --> 00:03:52.159
How can you have agency in the most awful circumstances in this case?
00:03:52.560 --> 00:03:53.439
Yes, yeah.
00:03:53.759 --> 00:04:20.079
So in the adaptive response, uh, as you can see in the illustration, that there is a uh there's a frog on a on a on a frog on a crocodile, and rather than generating a fear response, yeah, he's shifted that perception now as if he is and it's not that he is in a fantasy.
00:04:20.240 --> 00:04:20.399
Yeah.
00:04:20.560 --> 00:04:28.240
He's shifting the perception purposefully so that he gets time and he's reframing it.
00:04:28.399 --> 00:04:29.040
Yeah.
00:04:29.680 --> 00:04:48.959
And that reframing is changing to succumbing to a high level of stress or a perceived stress and going into the fear response, yeah, and now able to take take the stock of the situation and to be able to reframe it in a different way.
00:04:49.040 --> 00:04:49.360
Yeah.
00:04:49.519 --> 00:04:54.160
And that really helps remarkably with resilience.
00:04:54.480 --> 00:04:54.800
Yeah.
00:04:54.959 --> 00:05:00.240
So so this frog, the character in the picture, perhaps had some hard choices to make.
00:05:00.319 --> 00:05:00.639
Yeah.
00:05:00.800 --> 00:05:03.199
Um, using the crocodile as a raft.
00:05:03.759 --> 00:05:04.800
Crocodile as a raft?
00:05:05.279 --> 00:05:08.399
Not the choice that frog would have wanted to make.
00:05:08.560 --> 00:05:08.800
Yeah.
00:05:09.279 --> 00:05:10.720
But it's the choice that's there.
00:05:10.800 --> 00:05:12.160
It's the best chance for survival.
00:05:12.560 --> 00:05:13.360
Best chance for survival.
00:05:13.600 --> 00:05:13.759
Yeah.
00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:21.279
And and in that frog's psyche, the choice that they're making is to envisage a better situation.
00:05:21.759 --> 00:05:22.639
And getting on the other side.
00:05:23.600 --> 00:05:29.519
Getting to the other side, having something that's positive that generates some more positive emotions.
00:05:29.759 --> 00:05:30.000
Yes.
00:05:30.319 --> 00:05:34.000
Taking you away from some of the fear and into a different mindset.
00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:40.959
Because many times people might be in situations or circumstances that they might feel very trapped.
00:05:41.199 --> 00:05:41.519
Yeah.
00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:45.680
And they might not be able to immediately change the situations.
00:05:46.560 --> 00:05:54.160
But what they can change is between the two ears inside their head what they are thinking.
00:05:54.319 --> 00:05:54.480
Yeah.
00:05:54.639 --> 00:05:59.040
And that makes that creates a lot of shift in our environment.
00:05:59.199 --> 00:05:59.360
Yeah.
00:05:59.519 --> 00:06:02.560
And then that's what they create.
00:06:02.959 --> 00:06:03.120
Yeah.
00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:04.240
So they know the truth.
00:06:04.399 --> 00:06:06.639
This this frog here isn't d delusional.
00:06:06.720 --> 00:06:10.240
The frog knows that it's on the back of a crocodile or an alligator.
00:06:11.199 --> 00:06:16.000
But within themselves, they're generating more positive emotions.
00:06:16.160 --> 00:06:24.240
They've accepted the reality of the situation, but now it's about how can I accept the fear but move beyond it.
00:06:25.360 --> 00:06:26.639
They're also reframing.
00:06:26.720 --> 00:06:26.959
Yeah.
00:06:27.199 --> 00:06:28.800
They're also reframing.
00:06:29.040 --> 00:06:48.319
And the other thing Victor Frankel talks about is logotherapy, which is seeing something in the future that you can latch on to, some higher purpose, some higher connection, some goal to reach, which gives you a strong purpose.
00:06:48.560 --> 00:07:00.319
So rather than in that particular moment when you are getting into a fear response, you reframe the reframe that response into a different, reframe that response into a different way.
00:07:01.360 --> 00:07:11.199
For example, like I see on a day-to-day many patients who sometimes have terminal illnesses.
00:07:11.920 --> 00:07:17.519
And they might take time to come to terms with the diagnosis.
00:07:18.399 --> 00:07:33.680
But many of the patients I've seen, especially the remarkable uh resilient patients and the survivors, is they start seeing things in a different way.
00:07:34.560 --> 00:07:38.720
They start finding meaning in a different way.
00:07:39.279 --> 00:07:54.399
And as they go through that their journey, sometimes they have a illness which cannot be cured, but still they can bring a lot of healing to their to their situations, if you know what I'm saying, Vanilla.
00:07:55.040 --> 00:07:57.040
So they improve their experiences.
00:07:57.360 --> 00:07:57.519
Yeah.
00:07:57.759 --> 00:07:57.920
Yeah.
00:07:58.160 --> 00:08:18.399
They they have this hard knowledge that they've they've had to try somehow to accept, but then with reframing, with looking at how else could I see this, they can find some other meaning that that improves the the quality of life, improves how we're experiencing what's happening to us.
00:08:18.639 --> 00:08:20.879
And and that's adaptation, that's our adaptive.
00:08:21.439 --> 00:08:21.920
That's adaptation.
00:08:22.160 --> 00:08:22.800
That's adaptation.
00:08:23.199 --> 00:08:23.439
Yeah.
00:08:23.920 --> 00:08:33.039
And that adaptation is very important in when we talk about the environmental management.
00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:33.360
Yeah.
00:08:33.600 --> 00:08:35.440
Because there will be crisis.
00:08:35.919 --> 00:08:36.960
There will be change.
00:08:37.120 --> 00:08:37.679
Yeah.
00:08:38.480 --> 00:08:44.320
Simple thing is like you and me have spent a lot of time in Ireland and Scotland.
00:08:44.480 --> 00:08:44.960
Yeah.
00:08:45.279 --> 00:08:46.320
We know the weather.
00:08:46.559 --> 00:08:47.120
Yes.
00:08:47.440 --> 00:08:49.200
Weather is also changing all the time.
00:08:49.440 --> 00:08:49.759
Yeah.
00:08:50.480 --> 00:08:53.840
Similarly, life can throw curveballs.
00:08:54.159 --> 00:08:56.080
Life is also changing.
00:08:56.399 --> 00:09:02.720
But how we continuously keep adapting makes a lot of difference.
00:09:03.360 --> 00:09:03.919
I hear you.
00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:07.279
It's our own personal evolution that matters.
00:09:07.440 --> 00:09:08.399
That's what counts.
00:09:08.720 --> 00:09:16.159
And how we can keep bringing that how we can keep bringing that and keep growing from that.
00:09:16.720 --> 00:09:16.879
Yeah.
00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:17.360
Yeah.
00:09:17.519 --> 00:09:19.440
And but also back to the growth mindset.
00:09:19.519 --> 00:09:23.360
So it's all so interconnected to the skills that you're presenting here in the book.
00:09:23.919 --> 00:09:32.639
Having an adaptive response really helps you to have a growth mindset.
00:09:32.799 --> 00:09:33.039
Yeah.
00:09:33.279 --> 00:09:40.080
Having an adaptive response also means that you're aware of how you felt in the first place.
00:09:40.240 --> 00:09:40.559
Yeah.
00:09:41.679 --> 00:09:44.480
It links into self-awareness and self-reflection.
00:09:44.720 --> 00:09:44.879
Yeah.
00:09:45.279 --> 00:09:46.799
Then you take a stock.
00:09:47.120 --> 00:09:48.879
Okay, this is what I'm feeling just now.
00:09:49.039 --> 00:09:49.360
Yeah.
00:09:50.639 --> 00:10:00.559
But how can I sit back and see how I can shift my response to a more meaningful response?
00:10:00.799 --> 00:10:01.120
Yeah.
00:10:01.360 --> 00:10:11.440
And that is what, especially in this particular chapter, it what is the journey of having that adaptive response?
00:10:11.600 --> 00:10:21.840
How to develop that skill when we are faced with change, when we are faced with situations, we land ourselves which we didn't want.
00:10:22.720 --> 00:10:27.600
But now it has been kind of forced upon us.
00:10:27.679 --> 00:10:28.000
Yeah.
00:10:30.320 --> 00:10:31.840
How do we shift that mindset?
00:10:31.919 --> 00:10:33.679
How do we have that adaptive response?
00:10:34.240 --> 00:10:53.279
Is the game changer in terms of having a more higher level response as compared to going into the amygdala hijack and having the acute stress response or chronic stress in this situation.
00:10:53.600 --> 00:10:53.759
Yeah.
00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:58.000
And we can use things like emotional and social intelligence as levers.
00:10:58.480 --> 00:10:59.679
We don't have to be on our own.
00:10:59.840 --> 00:11:01.600
We can find help, we can find support.
00:11:02.159 --> 00:11:11.759
Very, very important to have that, to have also that knowing and understanding that we don't have to do this on our own.
00:11:11.919 --> 00:11:12.000
Yeah.
00:11:12.159 --> 00:11:17.840
And there are many other situations, many other people, many other people in these kind of situations.
00:11:18.559 --> 00:11:29.519
And being open to find the right kind of support along with this helps us to develop a resilience.
00:11:29.600 --> 00:11:39.120
And as I told you in the beginning, all these skills, whether it is emotional intelligence, social intelligence, adaptive response, they are all interlinked.
00:11:39.200 --> 00:11:39.440
Yeah.
00:11:39.759 --> 00:11:44.480
Part of the bigger ecosystem, but helping us like a rope.
00:11:44.559 --> 00:11:55.279
You see, the if there is a thick rope, how many strings come, but they're more intertwined with each other, they create a strong rope which cannot be broken.
00:11:55.679 --> 00:12:03.679
But if there is a single piece of string, it's easy to break with if there is a tension placed on that.
00:12:04.080 --> 00:12:13.759
But if there's a thick rope with a lot of strings intertwined, it's much, much more difficult and much harder and much more resilient.
00:12:14.080 --> 00:12:14.240
Yeah.
00:12:14.320 --> 00:12:20.399
So we're pulling every strand together, we're avoiding that binary thinking, we're avoiding looking at things as good or bad.
00:12:20.559 --> 00:12:23.360
We're looking for a sort of diverse kind of thinking, aren't we?
00:12:23.679 --> 00:12:24.399
Yes, absolutely.
00:12:24.720 --> 00:12:24.960
Yeah.
00:12:25.120 --> 00:12:25.279
Yeah.
00:12:25.679 --> 00:12:27.919
Well, thank you for sharing your insights, Punella.
00:12:28.159 --> 00:12:32.000
That was really uh inspiring discussion.
00:12:32.240 --> 00:12:32.480
Yes.
00:12:32.720 --> 00:12:39.039
And certainly something has very deeply affected my life and inspired me with the work.
00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:47.120
And it is something which, even in the most challenging situation, can give us hope and meaning.
00:12:47.440 --> 00:12:47.840
Absolutely.
00:12:47.919 --> 00:12:58.399
And I know, Ash, if you don't mind me saying from knowing you for seven years professionally, that you've lived this and you know what you're talking about.
00:12:58.879 --> 00:12:59.360
Well, thank you.
00:12:59.440 --> 00:13:00.320
The proof is in the pudding.
00:13:00.720 --> 00:13:00.960
Absolutely.
00:13:01.279 --> 00:13:05.039
I'm sitting in front of you, I'm I'm alive, I'm kicking, I'm thriving.
00:13:05.360 --> 00:13:06.879
Yeah, and you've just written two books.
00:13:07.120 --> 00:13:10.960
And published two books, and hopefully another four next year.
00:13:11.120 --> 00:13:11.360
Yeah.
00:13:11.600 --> 00:13:14.240
So uh no, I thank you for acknowledging that.
00:13:14.320 --> 00:13:16.720
I'm very grateful for your support.
00:13:16.960 --> 00:13:19.039
And together we thrive.
00:13:19.360 --> 00:13:20.080
Together we thrive.
00:13:20.240 --> 00:13:21.440
Together we thrive.
00:13:22.720 --> 00:13:26.399
