00:00:51.840 --> 00:00:54.240
Now let's dive into today's episode.
00:00:55.039 --> 00:01:03.840
Welcome back, Funella, to our last chapter in uh in resilience management, and we are going to talk about resourcefulness.
00:01:04.640 --> 00:01:05.599
So important, isn't it?
00:01:05.840 --> 00:01:18.799
So resourcefulness is the ultimate skill you could have even in the most challenging of the situations.
00:01:23.920 --> 00:01:26.079
It is the resourcefulness.
00:01:27.040 --> 00:01:33.280
And that can help us to to deal effectively with a lot of challenges.
00:01:33.680 --> 00:01:33.920
Yeah.
00:01:34.079 --> 00:01:38.079
And you're making me think about a little story you shared with me about the billionaire ash.
00:01:38.560 --> 00:01:42.560
I don't know if you could very quickly sum that up, but that that said a lot to me.
00:01:43.120 --> 00:01:47.359
Yeah, I remember uh sharing a story with you a long time back.
00:01:47.519 --> 00:01:47.760
Yeah.
00:01:48.159 --> 00:01:52.480
And that was about um let me think, what was that?
00:01:52.719 --> 00:02:00.640
Yeah, I think it was uh about uh uh a patient I had who was a who was a police officer.
00:02:01.120 --> 00:02:03.120
This is around seven, eight years back.
00:02:03.280 --> 00:02:03.599
Yeah.
00:02:03.760 --> 00:02:07.280
And he came to me and he was feeling very exhausted, very tired.
00:02:07.439 --> 00:02:07.840
Yeah.
00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:12.719
Um we did all the blood blood investigations and all the tests.
00:02:12.879 --> 00:02:14.479
I also explored more about him.
00:02:14.639 --> 00:02:15.120
Yeah.
00:02:15.439 --> 00:02:20.319
And had a good family, had a wife, had two children.
00:02:20.479 --> 00:02:20.800
Yeah.
00:02:21.039 --> 00:02:26.400
He was feeling very sad and exhausted.
00:02:26.560 --> 00:02:26.719
Yeah.
00:02:26.879 --> 00:02:31.520
And exploring more when I asked him about how things are at work.
00:02:31.759 --> 00:02:41.439
So there was a bit of silence and I explored more and he said that he was feeling kind of bullied in his work environment.
00:02:41.759 --> 00:02:48.960
And I had this assumption that in the kind of police services uh I was a little surprised.
00:02:49.360 --> 00:02:50.800
So I said, Really?
00:02:51.120 --> 00:02:56.080
So he said, Yes, in the police department there can be a lot of uh there can be a lot of bullying.
00:02:56.240 --> 00:02:56.400
Okay.
00:02:56.960 --> 00:03:01.599
And exploring more, I realized that he was not sleeping well.
00:03:01.919 --> 00:03:06.639
He was uh uh and this was going on for more than six months now.
00:03:06.800 --> 00:03:07.120
Yeah.
00:03:07.360 --> 00:03:15.840
Uh sleep was disturbed, it was now affecting his relationship with his spouse and his other colleagues.
00:03:16.719 --> 00:03:23.199
So he was diagnosed with depression and and high levels of stress.
00:03:23.360 --> 00:03:23.520
Yeah.
00:03:24.159 --> 00:03:29.520
So started him on the management and also referred him to a psychotherapist.
00:03:30.639 --> 00:03:37.199
So a few months back he came back to me later and he was looking much better.
00:03:37.759 --> 00:03:54.479
And he said, you know, really the the counseling sessions with uh with the psychotherapist was going very well and uh we could see I could you could see hope in his eyes that things are getting better, he was feeling less tired, he was getting better sleep.
00:03:54.719 --> 00:03:58.319
Yeah, so quite a difference, quite a difference, quite a difference.
00:03:58.479 --> 00:04:01.280
Then I saw him again after nearly six months.
00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:03.599
He was a different man altogether.
00:04:03.919 --> 00:04:04.159
Really?
00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:07.439
And I was really uh very pleased for him.
00:04:07.599 --> 00:04:07.840
Yeah.
00:04:08.080 --> 00:04:09.840
And he said, you know what happened?
00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:24.240
That I raised a complaint against this senior official, and I have left that department and moved on to a different department completely, and I had the most remarkable journey with my with my psychotherapist.
00:04:24.879 --> 00:04:43.600
And he said that that was that relies made me realize so much about my own self, and in particular, what my strengths were, what my resources were, what my connections were, who were the people who were helping me.
00:04:44.079 --> 00:04:49.279
And in particular, he mentioned the name of the movie, The Shoshank Redemption.
00:04:49.519 --> 00:04:52.720
He said that his psychotherapist had suggested that movie.
00:04:52.800 --> 00:04:52.959
Yeah.
00:04:53.120 --> 00:05:04.800
And when he said the name of the movie, The Shoshang Redemption, yeah, it struck a chord with me because I had seen that movie like almost two decades back.
00:05:04.879 --> 00:05:05.040
Yeah.
00:05:05.279 --> 00:05:22.000
And it was a remarkable movie of which kind of is such a is such a profound uh message in that movie that even in the worst time of despair, there is hope.
00:05:22.240 --> 00:05:22.879
Yeah.
00:05:23.279 --> 00:05:24.079
There is hope.
00:05:24.240 --> 00:05:26.959
And that's the illustration in this chapter.
00:05:27.120 --> 00:05:27.279
Yes.
00:05:28.240 --> 00:05:37.360
As you can see, this is a there is a there's there's a metaphorical tunnel there, and this person is has to go on the other side.
00:05:37.439 --> 00:05:40.800
There is light at the end of the tunnel.
00:05:40.959 --> 00:05:41.279
Yeah.
00:05:41.519 --> 00:05:46.000
In the tunnel, there is sludge, there are slippery slopes, there are electric wires.
00:05:46.240 --> 00:05:46.399
Yeah.
00:05:47.680 --> 00:05:48.879
And they're pretty awful.
00:05:49.360 --> 00:05:54.720
But this person has got the tools, he's got the torch, he's got the knife, he's got ropes.
00:05:54.800 --> 00:05:54.959
Yeah.
00:05:55.120 --> 00:06:02.000
And he's strategizing in his mind that how he has to get on the other side.
00:06:02.079 --> 00:06:02.399
Yeah.
00:06:02.560 --> 00:06:10.399
So he's connecting with his resources both inside him and the external resources.
00:06:10.560 --> 00:06:10.720
Yeah.
00:06:11.040 --> 00:06:28.079
So when this patient told me that this movie made a profound impact on him and how it made him connect with his most innermost resources, I was reminded by the about my most challenging situations.
00:06:28.800 --> 00:06:38.399
Like even in the movie, there's this person, uh the Andy Dufrine, who says there's something inside you which nobody can touch.
00:06:39.279 --> 00:06:43.199
Now that might be different from for different people.
00:06:43.279 --> 00:06:43.519
Yeah.
00:06:44.399 --> 00:06:55.199
For for someone, it could be a higher spirituality, it could be a connection with their God, or it could be a connection with a higher force.
00:06:55.519 --> 00:07:09.040
But there is something divine, there is something profound, and if you connect with that resource, it can be incredibly empowering.
00:07:09.759 --> 00:07:12.879
This is what participation was talking about.
00:07:13.519 --> 00:07:22.319
This is what I when I reflected on the most challenging situations, I could think of those resources.
00:07:22.800 --> 00:07:27.839
So it's not the resources externally which might always be there.
00:07:28.399 --> 00:07:48.240
There's a very deep, profound inner well which we can tap into, which is the ultimate resource, which can be a remarkable source of strength.
00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:52.639
And it has it's different for different people, yeah.
00:07:53.120 --> 00:08:02.079
And it can be explored within the context of a coaching partnership, coaching relationship for that person.
00:08:02.319 --> 00:08:02.480
Yeah.
00:08:02.800 --> 00:08:06.160
But I think it can make you take very, very far.
00:08:06.800 --> 00:08:19.279
So you can ask yourself the question what what is there inside me that's essential that just contains all of the meaning that I can find in life or I want to see or that I could reach for.
00:08:20.160 --> 00:08:30.720
Or you can just reflect that when there were challenging situations in your life, yeah, what were the things which help you come on the other side?
00:08:30.879 --> 00:08:39.519
I'm I'm sure nobody has come so far in their lives without having go go without having gone through a handful of challenges.
00:08:39.919 --> 00:08:40.960
You'd have to be very fortunate.
00:08:41.200 --> 00:08:42.799
You have to be very, very fortunate.
00:08:43.039 --> 00:08:43.279
Yeah.
00:08:43.519 --> 00:08:52.720
Or the other way, because here we are here we are perceiving that those challenges, because Funella, challenges are what makes us grow.
00:08:53.039 --> 00:08:53.600
Yeah.
00:08:53.840 --> 00:08:54.159
Yeah.
00:08:54.480 --> 00:09:04.720
If people do not have challenges and they haven't developed their resilience skills, yeah, I can tell you they they don't know what's coming around the corner.
00:09:04.799 --> 00:09:05.039
Yeah.
00:09:05.200 --> 00:09:12.399
And when they are faced with that kind of situation, they will find it very difficult to develop that muscle all of a sudden.
00:09:12.559 --> 00:09:12.720
Yeah.
00:09:12.960 --> 00:09:21.279
So it's again the thing about the perception, which is uh which is um which is so c so much the key here.
00:09:21.759 --> 00:09:42.879
Well, uh yeah, the story I was originally thinking of, I think you told me about a very, very astronomically wealthy man who died um in in a place of distress, really, because despite all of the wealth, all of the success that they'd had in business, they were sad and they recognized that in life they hadn't known what to do with that.
00:09:43.039 --> 00:09:52.320
They they hadn't known how to meet that sadness, and they had turned to kind of dysfunctional coping mechanisms like alcohol, which had robbed them of physical health.
00:09:52.480 --> 00:09:58.960
And how however good their healthcare was, it really couldn't keep pace with that damage that was happening.
00:09:59.120 --> 00:10:09.360
And there's the external damage physically from the alcohol, but there's that internal damage, that um lack of a sense of self or lack of something that has meaning.
00:10:09.600 --> 00:10:20.799
So you in material terms you could have huge access to resources, but really end up not feeling particularly fulfilled or end up in a place of sadness and distress.
00:10:21.039 --> 00:10:24.080
So it's about what's happening internally, internally as well.
00:10:24.320 --> 00:10:24.559
Yep.
00:10:24.799 --> 00:10:26.240
Yeah, very, very correct.
00:10:26.320 --> 00:10:49.919
And um in spite of having all the external resources and wealth, yeah, if we are not able to tap our innermost strengths, our potential, yeah, sometimes we might file find ourselves in that corner that we are still not able to thrive and in the game of life.
00:10:50.159 --> 00:10:50.399
Yeah.
00:10:50.879 --> 00:11:02.720
And again, we're right back to everything else that we've been learning about um self-management, about what we know about ourselves, our self-awareness or self-reflection, knowing who we are and understanding that.
00:11:02.960 --> 00:11:18.799
And that is a very powerful part of the journey with a coach or with a therapist, that you learn to know yourself with the support of another person who can reflect things back to you and help you to understand what you value and what your val what your values are.
00:11:19.440 --> 00:11:31.200
Yeah, I would I would even say that your own values and your top strengths are one of your biggest inner resources.
00:11:31.279 --> 00:11:31.600
Yeah.
00:11:32.720 --> 00:11:41.440
If you are able to play to your strengths, but again, it will come back to having awareness of what your top strengths are.
00:11:41.600 --> 00:11:41.840
Yeah.
00:11:42.240 --> 00:11:50.559
And then are you able to use those strengths effectively to create a future that you want?
00:11:52.320 --> 00:12:08.720
So it's a very important piece of resilience that when you are in situations of challenges, that you are able to use all the resources you have got to be able to overcome these challenges.
00:12:09.120 --> 00:12:18.240
Yeah, and maybe some of that is looking back at previous adverse circumstances and ways that you found to cope, strengths that you found within yourself.
00:12:18.960 --> 00:12:19.360
Yes.
00:12:19.679 --> 00:12:25.200
Well, Funella, thank you so much for this inspiring discussion.
00:12:25.519 --> 00:12:26.000
Thank you, guys.
00:12:26.480 --> 00:12:28.559
On um resilience management.
00:12:28.799 --> 00:13:01.279
I hope the viewers and listeners enjoyed uh this discussion and um we will look forward to having you again in our next section on environmental management and with remarkable discussions on what we have created and how we can put all these pieces together to help make all the challenging situations and convert them into a comfortable jacuzzi.
00:13:01.360 --> 00:13:09.279
