ÜBER DIESE EPISODE
Hey folks, it's been a minute since my last episode, and I wanted to share a few updates. I've been dealing with a flooded studio, the difficulties of starting a business as a convention vendor, and then there's the recently elected existential threat facing the trans community...
I have a few thoughts I'd like to share, and I want to set expectations regarding the status of both my shows and our release schedule going forward. This episode isn't all doom and gloom though. I'm a firm believer that our reality is constructed by the stories we tell ourselves and each other. So in a situation like this, I think it's time we tell a better one. I'm just one trans gal with a couple podcasts, but the one thing I can give to you all is a story. A story about how we face these next 4 years together, and come out stronger regardless of what's thrown at us.
Be safe out there friends, and thank you for listening.

TRANSKRIPT 🔗
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.960
Music.
00:00:10.850 --> 00:00:17.290
Hey folks, as some of you may have noticed, it's been a while since I've uploaded an episode.
00:00:17.510 --> 00:00:23.490
I wanted to make just a quick announcement check-in video to talk with you all
00:00:23.490 --> 00:00:27.110
about everything that's come up since my last posted episode,
00:00:27.470 --> 00:00:32.710
everything currently affecting me, and a little bit on the general state of things as well.
00:00:33.030 --> 00:00:39.350
About two months ago, my ability to record was severely impacted when a water
00:00:39.350 --> 00:00:42.350
main broke in front of my house, and destroyed my driveway,
00:00:42.890 --> 00:00:48.290
flooded my basement, and has generally thrown my home life into disarray ever since.
00:00:48.890 --> 00:00:53.750
My basement is still only in the early stages of repair, so it's going to be
00:00:53.750 --> 00:00:56.690
a while until things are more or less back to normal.
00:00:56.870 --> 00:01:01.430
I have to admit, this has dealt a big blow to my creative momentum,
00:01:01.850 --> 00:01:06.710
my mental health, and a number of other aspects in my life as my basement was
00:01:06.710 --> 00:01:14.010
my recording space, my studio, my home office, and my main social area for hosting company.
00:01:14.290 --> 00:01:19.510
This has been especially difficult since we were coming off my trip to FlameCon
00:01:19.510 --> 00:01:21.870
and all the great connections I made there,
00:01:22.050 --> 00:01:26.310
as well as the Iowa Podcast Awards and everything that was coming out of that,
00:01:26.490 --> 00:01:29.570
and this has just halted my ability to record.
00:01:29.570 --> 00:01:34.190
Now, thankfully, I've got an interim recording space set up in the meantime.
00:01:34.590 --> 00:01:38.650
I don't know if my sound quality will be quite the same, but hopefully there's
00:01:38.650 --> 00:01:40.270
not too much of a notable difference.
00:01:40.450 --> 00:01:46.110
But I wanted to set some expectations going forward just to let you know that
00:01:46.110 --> 00:01:52.710
I'm at the moment not going to be able to maintain the same schedule I was before with my podcasts.
00:01:53.150 --> 00:01:57.010
With Transcending Comics, I was trying to post an episode every other week.
00:01:57.010 --> 00:02:01.910
With Giant-Sized Violence. It was about whenever I had a good opportunity or
00:02:01.910 --> 00:02:07.670
a good guest lined up, but I'm going to need to slow down because attending to my basement,
00:02:08.030 --> 00:02:15.030
sorting through and itemizing all the damage, and dealing with recent changes
00:02:15.030 --> 00:02:16.130
affecting my community.
00:02:16.690 --> 00:02:23.170
I've taken away from my creative energy and the time I've had to record and edit episodes.
00:02:23.170 --> 00:02:29.270
So as far as expectations going forward, I want to aim to try and have an episode
00:02:29.270 --> 00:02:34.290
of Transcending Comics about once every three weeks, and if I can manage it,
00:02:34.550 --> 00:02:37.290
try to do the same for Giant-Sized Violence,
00:02:37.610 --> 00:02:39.830
but we'll see how things go.
00:02:39.830 --> 00:02:43.570
I do have a bunch of great guests lined up and ready to do episodes.
00:02:44.250 --> 00:02:48.610
I felt horrible having to tell a number of people that I'd have to press pause
00:02:48.610 --> 00:02:52.770
on recording for the foreseeable future, but I'm hoping I can get those all
00:02:52.770 --> 00:02:56.070
rescheduled and have a nice lineup of episodes in the near future.
00:02:56.470 --> 00:03:01.730
I also wanted to address the elephant in the room, politically speaking,
00:03:02.070 --> 00:03:08.470
as many of my other fellow trans creators have since the recent US election results.
00:03:09.455 --> 00:03:16.135
I'm not going to lie that this has also played a toll on my mental health, but not just my own.
00:03:16.275 --> 00:03:21.235
I mean, I'm also dealing with the collective dread of my entire community,
00:03:21.235 --> 00:03:24.455
worrying about what the next 40 years have to offer,
00:03:24.615 --> 00:03:31.175
and the fact that despite a candidate doing literally everything wrong that
00:03:31.175 --> 00:03:32.355
I could possibly imagine,
00:03:32.735 --> 00:03:37.375
people looked past their transphobia and any number of other hateful beliefs.
00:03:37.375 --> 00:03:44.475
All their terrible and literally criminal actions, and decided to vote for a bigot anyway.
00:03:44.575 --> 00:03:48.255
This does have an impact on my creative output and my life in general,
00:03:48.255 --> 00:03:54.535
because now, on top of everything else I've been dealing with between getting my basement fixed,
00:03:54.815 --> 00:03:57.975
starting a vending business, fulfilling orders for my comic,
00:03:58.155 --> 00:04:02.115
I also have to start planning for worst-case scenarios.
00:04:02.435 --> 00:04:07.535
I likely am going to have to leave my state, as mine is not currently the most
00:04:07.535 --> 00:04:11.215
trans-friendly, and I can't imagine it's going to get any better in the immediate
00:04:11.215 --> 00:04:15.275
future, and that means I'm also going to have to sell my house,
00:04:15.615 --> 00:04:23.535
find a new place in a nearby sanctuary state, and just figure out the entire process of relocating.
00:04:23.675 --> 00:04:28.675
On the plus side, though, I do know that there's an incredible creative future
00:04:28.675 --> 00:04:34.955
for me, likely in Minneapolis, as that's the go-to sanctuary city near us that we have our eyes set on.
00:04:35.355 --> 00:04:40.995
And on that note, I'd like to do my best to try and focus on the positives right
00:04:40.995 --> 00:04:44.715
now because that's really the only thing that's within my control.
00:04:45.215 --> 00:04:49.615
While the presidential election results are certainly disheartening,
00:04:49.935 --> 00:04:53.755
there were a number of silver linings that came out of that night.
00:04:54.035 --> 00:04:59.335
A good friend of mine won her campaign for the Iowa House, making her the first
00:04:59.335 --> 00:05:04.295
openly trans-elected official in our state office, and you'll actually be hearing
00:05:04.295 --> 00:05:07.295
audio from an interview I did with her in the near future.
00:05:07.715 --> 00:05:14.595
Beyond that, there were over 35 trans-elected officials that won their campaigns on election night,
00:05:14.635 --> 00:05:21.095
and I think that says something for what we can still do in this situation and
00:05:21.095 --> 00:05:23.315
the power we still have on a local level,
00:05:23.515 --> 00:05:26.355
at a state level, and in our immediate communities.
00:05:26.355 --> 00:05:32.635
With that being said, I certainly don't blame anyone for being afraid right
00:05:32.635 --> 00:05:38.075
now about the state of things and for possibly considering going stealth or
00:05:38.075 --> 00:05:43.855
not being vocally or openly trans and online and public spaces going forward.
00:05:44.075 --> 00:05:47.495
But for me personally, I'm going to stay visible.
00:05:47.994 --> 00:05:53.454
And if you believe you can do so with some relative amount of safety,
00:05:53.734 --> 00:05:55.534
I recommend you do the same.
00:05:55.714 --> 00:06:01.254
I think it's more important than ever that people know that we're still here
00:06:01.254 --> 00:06:04.394
and we're not going anywhere and that our stories are important.
00:06:04.634 --> 00:06:11.294
The progress we made on local and state level campaigns just reminds me of how
00:06:11.294 --> 00:06:13.794
important it is to get involved at a local level.
00:06:14.354 --> 00:06:20.134
Now, there have been many people out there posting videos or podcasts about
00:06:20.134 --> 00:06:24.814
what we should be doing right now, and a lot of them are full of great advice.
00:06:25.034 --> 00:06:31.834
My friend Sadie over at Transcaping just did a good video about surviving as a trans person in 2024.
00:06:32.314 --> 00:06:37.174
The good folks on the It Can Happen Here podcast just made a whole episode on
00:06:37.174 --> 00:06:40.334
what being trans might look like under another Trump presidency.
00:06:40.334 --> 00:06:44.754
And to echo some of their actions, I recommend that if you're a trans person
00:06:44.754 --> 00:06:49.214
in this country, that you start updating your legal documents,
00:06:49.414 --> 00:06:51.214
be that your passport, your ID.
00:06:51.694 --> 00:06:56.494
Your social security card, just in case our ability to do so gets restricted
00:06:56.494 --> 00:06:59.474
in the very near future. Be ready to defend yourself.
00:06:59.794 --> 00:07:04.734
I genuinely believe that any trans person out there should have pepper spray,
00:07:04.934 --> 00:07:08.774
pepper gel, or some means of self-defense on them at any time.
00:07:09.014 --> 00:07:15.154
And be conscious of who you have as a support system in your immediate community.
00:07:15.154 --> 00:07:19.234
Again, while I totally understand the fears that a lot of us are feeling right
00:07:19.234 --> 00:07:25.614
now, I want us to remember the progress that we've made over the last 10, 20, even 30 years.
00:07:25.934 --> 00:07:29.514
The world knows about us now, and we're not going back in the closet.
00:07:29.874 --> 00:07:34.054
When something happens to one of us, people care. We know about it.
00:07:34.274 --> 00:07:36.374
That wasn't always the case.
00:07:36.634 --> 00:07:41.194
A lot of us, a lot of our trans elders felt invisible, that when terrible things
00:07:41.194 --> 00:07:45.014
happened to us individually or as a community, no one was paying attention.
00:07:45.154 --> 00:07:49.554
That's not the case anymore. We have voices now and people are listening.
00:07:49.974 --> 00:07:54.054
I don't know for certain what's ahead for us, but I'm confident that any trans
00:07:54.054 --> 00:07:59.814
elder you know has been through worse times in the past. And we can get through this now.
00:08:00.054 --> 00:08:04.314
If our reality is shaped by the stories we tell each other and ourselves,
00:08:04.714 --> 00:08:08.454
then now more than ever, I think it's time that we tell a better one.
00:08:10.401 --> 00:08:14.561
As expected, the next four years do bring a lot of negative attention to the
00:08:14.561 --> 00:08:18.401
trans community from the right, and there will be many spineless representatives
00:08:18.401 --> 00:08:20.481
on the left that fail to stand up for us.
00:08:20.721 --> 00:08:26.261
But we find out pretty quick who our actual allies are, some coming from places you wouldn't expect.
00:08:27.341 --> 00:08:31.581
The increased scrutiny and legislative action against the trans community inspire
00:08:31.581 --> 00:08:34.601
us to organize and take action like never before.
00:08:35.861 --> 00:08:40.121
Those of us that get involved find community among the activists and organizers,
00:08:40.521 --> 00:08:45.701
and they show us the most effective ways to take action, and we inspire our friends to do the same.
00:08:47.321 --> 00:08:52.161
When the 2026 elections come around, a record number of trans candidates run
00:08:52.161 --> 00:08:56.681
for office, and we come away with more trans elected officials than ever before.
00:08:57.521 --> 00:09:01.921
The harassment and bullying tactics of the other side, while awful and uncalled
00:09:01.921 --> 00:09:05.781
for, have a backfire effect that attracts more people to our side.
00:09:06.241 --> 00:09:10.261
When those outside our community see us being attacked for nothing more than
00:09:10.261 --> 00:09:13.961
being trans, and how we continue to be ourselves in the face of this,
00:09:14.261 --> 00:09:18.681
they begin to see the transphobes as the bullies and cowards they really are.
00:09:19.141 --> 00:09:24.741
By the time 2028 comes around, we show the world that we are a political force
00:09:24.741 --> 00:09:29.461
to be reckoned with, and we will not be thrown under the bus for the sake of centrists again.
00:09:29.461 --> 00:09:35.761
We continue to survive, thrive, and live our best lives, regardless of what they throw at us.
00:09:35.881 --> 00:09:38.761
And we find out just how strong we truly are.
00:09:39.281 --> 00:09:43.581
The next four years may not be easy, but we'll get through them together.
00:09:44.261 --> 00:09:48.881
If you're a trans person listening to this, don't let these election results silence you.
00:09:49.221 --> 00:09:52.241
Keep on finding community in the spaces where you feel welcome.
00:09:52.521 --> 00:09:56.081
Keep listening to the stories of other trans folk and share them with the world.
00:09:56.281 --> 00:10:01.061
And don't forget, your story matters too. now more than ever.
00:10:01.501 --> 00:10:07.241
So please, keep reading, keep writing, and keep transcending.
00:10:07.120 --> 00:11:30.480
Music.
00:11:31.350 --> 00:11:36.750
Some quick music credits before we go. Our song for a better story was the Sultan
00:11:36.750 --> 00:11:40.570
and Shepard remix of Survive by Lane 8 featuring Chani Leena.
00:11:40.990 --> 00:11:46.770
Our intro song was Push by Rockstar and Elise, and the upcoming outro is their song Fine.
00:11:47.070 --> 00:11:52.250
Both come from their EP, The Future, which has been playing on repeat for me since the election.
00:11:52.650 --> 00:11:57.290
She wrote this song after the transphobic nightmare that was CPAC 2023,
00:11:57.290 --> 00:12:02.210
the right-wing event that called for the eradication of transgenderism.
00:12:03.030 --> 00:12:07.550
It's a song channeling the sentiment of a lone trans girl that took to Twitter
00:12:07.550 --> 00:12:12.490
afterwards to express how she just wanted to live her life, go to work,
00:12:12.610 --> 00:12:17.770
and maybe play some video games, and how even that felt difficult at that moment.
00:12:18.630 --> 00:12:24.150
The EP is still startlingly prescient, and I recommend it to anyone else out
00:12:24.150 --> 00:12:26.730
there in need of a song to make you feel seen and.
00:12:27.120 --> 00:15:51.920
Music.
00:15:51.767 --> 00:15:57.807
Thank you.
