00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.279
A thousand people may say something really amazing to you.
00:00:03.439 --> 00:00:08.160
They may compliment you, encourage you, or celebrate something you just did or accomplished.
00:00:08.320 --> 00:00:15.199
But somehow you have eyes, ears, and heart for that one person who said something mean to you.
00:00:15.439 --> 00:00:16.640
Why do we do that?
00:00:16.800 --> 00:00:21.679
Why do we pay so much attention to the negative things and ignore the things that are meant to build us up?
00:00:21.839 --> 00:00:32.240
I mean, having you seen this happen, someone posts something online, they get so many positive comments, but the one person who calls them ugly or says something rude or mean becomes the person they want to respond to.
00:00:32.479 --> 00:00:34.079
That's the person they think about.
00:00:34.159 --> 00:00:35.359
And I wonder why.
00:00:35.600 --> 00:00:39.439
The way I can describe it is that we seem to be attracted to the negative.
00:00:39.520 --> 00:00:44.640
It gets on us, it grabs our emotions, and this connects to a concept Emily P.
00:00:44.719 --> 00:00:48.399
Freeman brings up in chapter 18 of the book The Next Right Thing.
00:00:48.560 --> 00:00:51.759
This chapter is called Don't Give Your Critic Words.
00:00:51.920 --> 00:00:53.280
Let's get into it.
00:01:10.159 --> 00:01:16.000
Do you sense that God is calling you to step out and do something new, but you're held back by fear and uncertainty?
00:01:16.239 --> 00:01:22.319
Do you struggle with believing that you can do great things because of your quiet, reserved, and introverted nature?
00:01:22.560 --> 00:01:23.519
Welcome here.
00:01:23.680 --> 00:01:27.840
I'm Remy Roy, your host and founder of Sheepact.com.
00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:32.159
I'm an author, an entrepreneur, a creative, and a committed tryer.
00:01:32.480 --> 00:01:36.959
I'm here to help you get unstuck and make progress on your God idea.
00:01:37.120 --> 00:01:38.159
Let's go.
00:01:41.280 --> 00:01:42.799
Alright, so what is a critic?
00:01:42.959 --> 00:01:45.680
What does it mean to be a critic and who is a critic?
00:01:45.920 --> 00:01:48.799
Merriam Webster defines critic in a few ways.
00:01:48.959 --> 00:01:57.200
One definition is someone who engages often professionally in the analysis, evaluation, or appreciation of art or artistic performance.
00:01:57.519 --> 00:02:00.400
That's not exactly the definition we're looking for here.
00:02:00.560 --> 00:02:10.719
Another definition is someone who expresses a reasoned opinion on any matter, especially involving a judgment of its value, truth, righteousness, beauty, or technique.
00:02:10.960 --> 00:02:12.400
That one's closer.
00:02:12.719 --> 00:02:16.719
A critic expresses an opinion that involves judgment about the value of something.
00:02:16.879 --> 00:02:21.520
So it could be your work, it could be your choices, it could even feel like your value as a person.
00:02:21.680 --> 00:02:25.759
Another definition of critic is someone who gives harsh or critical judgment.
00:02:25.840 --> 00:02:28.479
And that is the kind of critic we need to be careful with.
00:02:28.719 --> 00:02:34.319
Not every critic is bad, not every correction is harmful, and not every opinion should be thrown away.
00:02:34.400 --> 00:02:39.039
But we do need to define the kind of critic we're talking about today, and that's very important.
00:02:39.439 --> 00:03:00.080
So Emily talks about a story in this book where she had an interaction with an Uber driver, and she had lots of stories, Hilaria stories, and then she mentions something about one time when she had someone in her car, but then she stops herself and says, Well, we're not going to give her words because that's what she would want.
00:03:00.719 --> 00:03:02.560
And Emily was impressed by that.
00:03:02.719 --> 00:03:05.759
And I think that's truly, truly remarkable.
00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:14.960
This is a position where you could open your mouth and say something about a situation where somebody hurts you with their very critical or mean words.
00:03:15.280 --> 00:03:24.800
And months later, weeks later, years later, you are rehashing that same situation, and you might still feel that pinch of that negativity.
00:03:25.360 --> 00:03:28.400
But then what if you choose to not do that?
00:03:28.639 --> 00:03:31.039
What if you choose to say, no, I'm not gonna talk about that?
00:03:31.120 --> 00:03:32.080
That's fine.
00:03:32.400 --> 00:03:32.960
Right?
00:03:33.199 --> 00:03:36.639
And she says, we're not gonna give her words because that's what she would want.
00:03:37.120 --> 00:03:38.080
I love that.
00:03:38.639 --> 00:03:39.199
I love that.
00:03:39.280 --> 00:03:39.919
I love that concept.
00:03:40.080 --> 00:03:43.039
Emily says that the critic only leads if we let her lead.
00:03:43.199 --> 00:03:53.199
So if she had gone into that conversation talking about what the person said and how it hurt her and all of that, she would be letting that person, even though they're not there, lead that conversation.
00:03:53.919 --> 00:03:57.280
So she says the critic only leads if we let her lead.
00:03:57.520 --> 00:04:04.479
But I don't mean the critic who is helpful or who has your best interest at heart, because those are very useful.
00:04:04.719 --> 00:04:14.400
This is not someone in your group, this is not one of your mentors, this is the spiteful one, the person who said mean things like way back when, maybe the one who now lives in your head.
00:04:14.639 --> 00:04:17.839
That time has passed, and that person may not even be around anymore.
00:04:18.000 --> 00:05:30.379
But somehow you still carry that voice in your head.
00:05:30.540 --> 00:05:34.220
But the only voice that critic can have in your life is now yours.
00:05:34.379 --> 00:05:35.420
It's your voice.
00:05:35.660 --> 00:05:42.700
Critics do not own our lives, they do not get to sit in the place of final judgment over our decisions, our work, or our calling.
00:05:42.780 --> 00:05:44.060
That is not their place.
00:05:44.300 --> 00:05:52.860
So the question is, what is that person, whoever is um maybe a critic in your life right now, and you're trying to decide is this someone I should listen to?
00:05:52.939 --> 00:05:54.220
What do they know about you?
00:05:54.460 --> 00:06:02.540
If you are criticized by someone who protects you, believes in you, and has your best interest at heart, and you know and you feel that, you are more likely to listen.
00:06:02.700 --> 00:06:07.660
Like, okay, let me, I know I don't understand, but let me try and understand what you're saying.
00:06:07.900 --> 00:06:11.500
You can weigh their words and their opinions in the light of what you know about them.
00:06:11.740 --> 00:06:17.020
You know who they are, you know they care, you know they believe in you, you know they want what is best for you.
00:06:17.259 --> 00:06:26.700
But if the person offering judgment about your work, your life, or anything you were doing is a stranger, especially on the internet, what do they deserve from you?
00:06:26.939 --> 00:06:27.740
Nothing.
00:06:28.220 --> 00:06:34.060
They should not get space in your head, they should not get authority over your heart, and that is so important.
00:06:34.620 --> 00:06:36.460
But not all critics are created equal.
00:06:36.620 --> 00:06:40.939
Emily says the critic is a tricky companion because not all of them are created equal.
00:06:41.100 --> 00:06:46.620
Just because someone is critical does not automatically mean you should ignore them and call them a hater.
00:06:47.020 --> 00:06:50.379
But it also does not automatically mean they are right.
00:06:50.620 --> 00:06:51.900
So, how do you find the balance?
00:06:52.060 --> 00:07:03.660
How do you find the balance between the kind of critique that is coming from someone who may not be saying it the way you expect it, but it is well intentioned, or a criticism that sounds strong but is not actually right.
00:07:04.780 --> 00:07:09.660
We learn a lot from critic, from correction, from critical thinking, from direction.
00:07:09.900 --> 00:07:14.460
But the trouble comes when we allow all critical voices to weigh the same amount.
00:07:14.700 --> 00:07:22.460
When it comes to making decisions, you have to learn to trust your own heart in the presence of God and you have to be careful who you allow into your life.
00:07:22.939 --> 00:07:30.620
People always don't have to agree with you, but the critics to most seriously consider are the ones coming from those who believe in you.
00:07:30.860 --> 00:07:53.740
So if someone who I trust comes to me and says, Remy, I think you're making a mistake in the way that you're doing this or that, maybe this project you're working on, or your life, or your marriage, or your health, I am more apt to listen to them because I know that in the past they have shown me that they believe in me.
00:07:53.900 --> 00:07:55.420
They have shown me that they care for me.
00:07:55.660 --> 00:08:01.900
So even though what they're saying at that momentum may sting, I'm more likely to really consider what they're trying to say.
00:08:01.980 --> 00:08:07.420
I don't have to necessarily agree with them, but I will consider it.
00:08:07.980 --> 00:08:15.340
So why do we give strangers who have no, you know, full context on our lives so much power?
00:08:16.060 --> 00:08:22.540
So I mentioned the stranger on the internet who calls you a bad name or says something mean, but somehow those are the voices we give the most power.
00:08:22.700 --> 00:08:26.460
Those are the voices we keep thinking about, those are the words that hit us the hardest.
00:08:26.620 --> 00:08:30.780
And you know how it is, you rehash that word over and over and over again.
00:08:30.939 --> 00:08:36.379
They said it to me, they said this to me, they said this to me, and you're thinking about it, turning it over in your mind.
00:08:36.539 --> 00:08:45.100
So maybe the issue is not only critique, maybe the issue is the state of our heart, our confidence, our identity.
00:08:45.179 --> 00:08:51.500
Because if you are not rooted and grounded in who you are, critical words can confuse you.
00:08:51.659 --> 00:08:55.019
They can make you feel less than, they can make you feel like you're not enough.
00:08:55.179 --> 00:09:04.860
So part of the work of making sure critics do not upset our balance is really constantly going back to where our identity comes from, where our confidence comes from.
00:09:05.659 --> 00:09:09.500
I've shared before on this podcast that I used to be painfully shy.
00:09:09.659 --> 00:09:12.779
I experienced a lot of social anxiety and a lack of confidence.
00:09:12.939 --> 00:09:16.779
So it was definitely jarring when people said things to me that felt harsh.
00:09:16.939 --> 00:09:31.019
But the more I have grown as a person, the more I have tapped into what makes me me, the more I've embraced my personality, my joy, my passion, and my life, the less I'm rattled by words and thoughts and opinions that should not carry much weight in the first place.
00:09:31.340 --> 00:09:34.379
So go back to your identity.
00:09:34.779 --> 00:09:42.620
As we navigate our lives, as we navigate decisions around our work, our passions and dreams, we will be exposed to different opinions.
00:09:42.860 --> 00:09:44.060
It comes with the territory.
00:09:44.139 --> 00:09:45.259
People will have things to say.
00:09:45.500 --> 00:09:52.060
Some of those things may be helpful, some may not be, but the deeper we are rooted in our identity, the stronger we become.
00:09:52.220 --> 00:09:55.659
Maybe you're thinking right now about a particular critical voice in your life.
00:09:55.899 --> 00:09:57.500
Maybe you remember the words exactly.
00:09:57.659 --> 00:10:00.860
Maybe you remember how it felt when that person said those things to you.
00:10:01.659 --> 00:10:05.580
Well, your next right thing in this moment is to return to the truth.
00:10:05.740 --> 00:10:08.460
You may not be able to stop that person from thinking what they think.
00:10:08.620 --> 00:10:13.500
You cannot go back into the past and change what they said, but why does it still have power?
00:10:13.659 --> 00:10:15.820
So it's time to take that voice away.
00:10:15.899 --> 00:10:18.539
It's time to take the mic away from that voice.
00:10:18.779 --> 00:10:21.899
It's time to trust that you were created with purpose.
00:10:22.220 --> 00:10:26.379
And as you go about your father's business, you will be well.
00:10:26.620 --> 00:10:31.340
One of the things I find very important is at some point learning to draw a line in the sand.
00:10:31.580 --> 00:10:38.860
Emily says in the book that when the critic points out your weaknesses or your fear, if you're paying attention, you will also point out something else.
00:10:39.180 --> 00:10:42.860
A gift you would not have asked for, a motivation he never meant to give.
00:10:43.100 --> 00:10:47.580
And the gift the critic brings, whether we like it or not, is a line in the sand.
00:10:48.220 --> 00:10:54.539
When somebody criticizes you or like critical words like come to you, you have to decide, do you believe those words?
00:10:54.779 --> 00:10:58.060
And that's one of the most powerful things we can do, to decide.
00:10:58.300 --> 00:11:00.060
Do I believe this or not?
00:11:00.460 --> 00:11:02.139
Do I accept this or not?
00:11:02.379 --> 00:11:11.180
Draw a line in the sign, decide what gets to affect you, decide what you believe, decide what you do not believe, decide what you hold on to, decide what you release.
00:11:11.340 --> 00:11:16.460
The critic can force us to face our biggest fears and listen hard for the voice of God.
00:11:16.700 --> 00:11:35.019
I don't know about you, but for me, when I am dealing with very difficult situations where maybe I'm dealing with words, maybe my own fears, my own limitations, self-imposed limitations, or the words that people have generally said to me that hurt me, that's when I really, really want to dig into God.
00:11:35.100 --> 00:11:36.379
Like, what is this, God?
00:11:36.539 --> 00:11:37.820
What do you say about me?
00:11:40.539 --> 00:11:42.460
What do I need to hold on to here?
00:11:43.100 --> 00:11:47.019
And how can I just focus on the good in the situation?
00:11:48.379 --> 00:11:55.340
So these kinds of situations can force us to go deeper into our identity so we become more confident, bolder, more sure, more certain.
00:11:55.820 --> 00:12:03.899
So we can do our work instead of hiding, so we can move on instead of getting defensive, so we can be free instead of giving the critic more words.
00:12:04.860 --> 00:12:07.659
I believe in the power of life-giving words.
00:12:07.980 --> 00:12:10.220
I believe in the holy resurrection.
00:12:10.379 --> 00:12:12.700
I believe nothing can separate us from God.
00:12:12.860 --> 00:12:24.460
So if you are someone who is deeply affected by the words of others, if you're someone who lets critical words, mean words, and judgmental words sit too long in your heart and mind, this is my encouragement for you.
00:12:24.860 --> 00:12:27.500
Go deep in figuring out who you are.
00:12:27.659 --> 00:12:33.980
Go deep in your confidence, go deep in speaking over yourself, words that reflect the truth about you.
00:12:34.620 --> 00:12:39.899
The more you do that, the less time, energy, and focus you will give to the critic.
00:12:41.899 --> 00:12:42.539
All right.
00:12:43.019 --> 00:12:44.779
Emily has a practice in this chapter.
00:12:45.019 --> 00:12:52.860
She says, when it comes to making decisions, combating decision fatigue, and learning to trust God with your heart, you have to be careful who you allow in.
00:12:54.940 --> 00:13:02.779
And this might be hard because for most of us, the critic's voice in our head is so familiar that we barely realize what it's doing to us.
00:13:03.580 --> 00:13:16.620
So pay attention to where you may be giving your critic words, whether it's a real critic or an imagined one, ask the Lord to help you catch yourself in the act of repeating that negative phrase, that negative thought.
00:13:17.019 --> 00:13:19.899
Remember, you have everything you need in God.
00:13:20.139 --> 00:13:23.980
So don't let negative words take your joy away.
00:13:25.500 --> 00:13:27.659
All right, here's what I want you to think about.
00:13:28.860 --> 00:13:52.620
The next time somebody says something that wounds you, the next time somebody tries to pull you into a defensive posture where you're trying to say, um, no, that's not true, or whatever, maybe that moment is an opportunity, an opportunity for you to dig deep, to build your confidence, to remember your identity in God, to choose whose voice gets to lead your life and to draw a line and the sand.
00:13:53.420 --> 00:14:00.379
So today we've been talking about what it means to not let negative and critical words affect your balance.
00:14:00.539 --> 00:14:03.340
We talk about the fact that not all critics are created equal.
00:14:03.500 --> 00:14:11.820
Some critic is helpful, some correction is needed, some people have earned the right to speak into our lives, but not every voice deserves the same weight.
00:14:12.060 --> 00:14:15.100
Not every opinion deserves a seat at your table.
00:14:15.340 --> 00:14:31.899
So the work here is learning to know the difference, learning to listen to the words that actually matter, that are wise, loving, and rooted in truth, and learning to release the voices that only want to wound, distract you, or make you forget who you really are.
00:14:33.100 --> 00:14:33.659
All right.
00:14:33.899 --> 00:14:35.180
I would love to hear from you.
00:14:35.259 --> 00:14:41.659
