ÜBER DIESE EPISODE
At 19 years old, Julie was a college student spending the summer living in the NYU dorms in New York City when a ten-minute conversation with a complete stranger changed the course of her life.
That stranger was Cary Brothers.
Cary was a college student from Nashville spending the summer interning at MTV. They barely knew each other, but chatted for just a few minutes before he offered to pass Julie's résumé along to the internship coordinator at MTV.
That small act of kindness led to a phone call from MTV. The phone call led to an internship. The internship became eight years on staff at MTV - and the foundation for so much of the career, friendships, opportunities, and life Julie would go on to build.
But then, Cary disappeared from her story.
For years, Julie wondered what had happened to him.
Now, decades later, they finally sit down to talk about where his life went after those ten minutes changed hers.
In Part Two of One Conversation, Two Different Paths, acclaimed singer-songwriter Cary Brothers shares the extraordinary story of a life built without a roadmap: walking away from paths that looked successful on paper, starting over when something deeper was calling, trusting his instincts, betting on himself, and ultimately finding his way to a career in music that would take him around the world.
From MTV and Hollywood to the Hotel Café, to the Grammy-winning Garden State soundtrack, and musical placements all over the television and film landscape - Cary's journey is about far more than music. It's about trusting yourself and taking the risk before you know how it will turn out, pushing through fear and failure, and understanding that success is rarely a straight line.
And from there, Cary has consistently opened doors for other people, shared opportunities, connected friends, and helped others find their moment. And along the way, he discovered that the people and relationships you invest in can become part of what carries you through your own highs, lows, reinventions, and next chapters.
This is a conversation about what happens when you realize that the life you are succeeding at may not the life you are meant to live. Cary walked away from a career he had already built because music was the one thing he knew he had to pursue. He started again, built an extraordinary musical career on his own terms, and kept choosing instinct over certainty every time his life asked him to begin again.
And woven through both Julie and Cary's stories is the reminder that good things can happen when you least expect them. A ten-minute conversation can open a door. A seemingly small decision can redirect a life. The person you help today can become part of the world that carries you tomorrow. Sometimes the moments that shape us most are the ones we never saw coming.
Two young people. One ten-minute conversation. Two very life different paths.
And decades later, they finally get to finish the conversation.
