ÜBER DIESE EPISODE
Canada's MAID controversy just took a remarkable political turn. Mark Carney's Liberals voted against a Conservative bill intended to permanently prevent medical assistance in dying when mental illness is the sole underlying condition. Then the Liberal government announced plans to pursue essentially the same restriction through its own legislation.
So why vote against the Conservative proposal?
Bill C-218 was defeated 187–141, despite broad agreement on maintaining the mental-illness exclusion. Justice Minister Sean Fraser raised concerns about the bill's wording, while Conservative MP Tamara Jansen indicated a willingness to address those concerns through amendments.
But there's another development Canadians need to understand.
The Liberal government also intends to address advance requests for medical assistance in dying, raising separate questions about consent, safeguards and how future medical decisions should be handled when patients lose decision-making capacity.
In today's Tap the Maple, Bakes examines:
Why the Liberals opposed Bill C-218
The contradiction between the vote and the government's announcement
The difference between mental-illness eligibility and advance requests
The questions surrounding informed consent and safeguards
Why Parliament's March 17, 2027 deadline matters
Whether two distinct MAID policy questions should be debated separately
The central question: If both parties want to maintain the same exclusion, why couldn't Parliament find a way to advance the legislation?
