Suspense #627, "When the Bough Breaks," presents a chilling portrait of a marriage built on suspicion and greed. Evie Stryker has just been acquitted of murdering her wealthy grandfather with cyanide, and she wastes no time marrying Harry, the man she met on a beach who may have helped her commit the crime. As the newlyweds settle into their home, ready to enjoy the inheritance, they receive an unwelcome visitor: Corcoran, a relentless newspaper reporter who sees through their carefully constructed facade. He points out a disturbing fact that will haunt their marriage—while Evie can never be tried again for the same murder, Harry was never charged and remains vulnerable to prosecution if his wife ever decides to talk.
What follows is a tense psychological battle as the couple confronts the terrible truth of their relationship. Evie, insecure about why a man like Harry would want a woman in her late thirties, begins to question whether he married her for love or money. Harry must now live with the knowledge that his freedom rests entirely in the hands of a wife who may not trust him, creating a twisted dynamic where power, paranoia, and desperation intertwine.
