It’s Never Too Late To Change Lanes

WEBVTT
00:00:17.839 --> 00:00:22.800
Welcome to Speak Up International with Rita Berg and Elton Brown.
00:00:24.320 --> 00:00:33.359
Well, as you know, on Speak Up International, we travel the world to find people we consider to be community builders.
00:00:33.679 --> 00:00:35.600
Today is no exception.
00:00:36.079 --> 00:00:40.719
We didn't have to travel anywhere because we have with us Augustine Obi.
00:00:41.520 --> 00:00:43.920
He's a primary health care practitioner.
00:00:44.479 --> 00:00:55.439
He works at a nurse or practitioner-led clinic where he combines advanced clinical training with a compassionate, patient-authentic approach to health care.
00:00:56.240 --> 00:01:07.920
Augustine has developed a specialized clinical focus in mental health and supports seniors and seniors, particularly with chronic disease care.
00:01:08.799 --> 00:01:13.840
As we say on Speak Up International, we prefer for guests to tell their own stories.
00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:16.079
There's so much more I could say about Mr.
00:01:16.239 --> 00:01:19.359
O'Bing, but we'll allow him to tell his story.
00:01:19.599 --> 00:01:21.760
Welcome to Speak Up International.
00:01:23.519 --> 00:01:24.719
Wonderful, wonderful.
00:01:24.799 --> 00:01:25.840
Thank you for having me.
00:01:26.079 --> 00:01:28.640
It's a pleasure to be on Speak Up International.
00:01:28.959 --> 00:01:31.519
So tell us your origin.
00:01:32.239 --> 00:01:33.680
Where are you from?
00:01:34.480 --> 00:01:40.239
If you are not from Canada originally, or your parents are not originally from Canada.
00:01:40.480 --> 00:01:44.319
At any rate, how did you wind up to be where you are today?
00:01:44.480 --> 00:01:48.079
And you can also talk about your degrees.
00:01:49.439 --> 00:01:53.359
Okay, that's uh a wonderful question.
00:01:53.439 --> 00:01:59.040
Um, where I'm from, I think identity is important, um, and heritage means a lot.
00:01:59.200 --> 00:02:00.719
Um, so where am I from?
00:02:00.879 --> 00:02:05.760
Um, my name is Augustine, Nana Kwame entry boysa kung o bing.
00:02:06.079 --> 00:02:07.359
I'm from Ghana.
00:02:07.599 --> 00:02:09.280
My parents come from Ghana.
00:02:09.520 --> 00:02:13.759
I was born in Canada, um, Toronto to be specific.
00:02:14.080 --> 00:02:17.840
Um, when folks often ask me the question, who am I?
00:02:18.159 --> 00:02:38.479
I like to say I am a lover of life, a student of life, and someone who believes passionately about the power of literacy, um, reading and writing comprehension, and connecting with others and doing that self-work to get yourself to the next destination.
00:02:38.800 --> 00:02:40.560
Um, I love uh people.
00:02:40.719 --> 00:02:47.360
I love sharing my learning and my knowledge and my experiences with others to impact the world in a positive way.
00:02:47.599 --> 00:02:49.199
Um where am I from?
00:02:49.360 --> 00:02:53.599
I was born and raised in Toronto, the inner city in Jane and Finch.
00:02:54.000 --> 00:03:11.599
Um, went to school, um, Fir Grove, Oakville, Emory, York, U of T, pursuing sports as a medium or as a catalyst that propelled me to uh higher education and higher learning.
00:03:11.680 --> 00:03:24.719
Um, as it relates to my my background um educationally, I have obtained from York University an honors, double major in criminology and education.
00:03:25.360 --> 00:03:47.599
Um, following that, I've worked on the reserves and with the school boards and many other B3 organizations in the community and have gone on to complete my master's of social work with a specialization in indigenous trauma and resiliency from the University of Toronto.
00:03:47.759 --> 00:03:51.759
Um I graduated in 2018, the first cohort.
00:03:52.159 --> 00:03:55.199
Um, and this is about 10 years later from there.
00:03:55.439 --> 00:03:57.919
Since then, I've published two books.
00:03:58.159 --> 00:04:08.639
My first book is entitled Changing Lanes, the first XXV, which is Roman numerals for 25, um, in 2016.
00:04:08.719 --> 00:04:20.160
So actually, in two days, it would be the official 10-year anniversary of my first published book, um, Changing Lanes, the first XXV.
00:04:20.399 --> 00:04:48.399
Um, I went on to uh complete another book, which was entitled Poetic Panther, which is a collection of poems and of poems that I've written in my life to describe certain periods and stages I was in and uh how I healed therapeutically through narrative and poetic therapy, which is my pedagogy and my framework.
00:04:48.800 --> 00:05:12.160
And also um I had the opportunity and the pleasure of also including five local uh artists and uh poets in the poem and in the book, the collection, um, to help support them to get their message out there and also to build a community of healers through writing and reading.
00:05:12.480 --> 00:05:27.680
Um and lastly, I have also um released an album um called entitled Poetic Therapy on all streaming platforms under my artist name Gusto Flame.
00:05:28.160 --> 00:05:33.439
G-U-S Gus from TO from Toronto, Gusto Flame.
00:05:33.920 --> 00:05:35.920
Um, I just love I'm happy to be here.
00:05:36.079 --> 00:05:41.439
I love learning, inspiring, teaching, mentoring, and just traveling the world.
00:05:41.519 --> 00:05:48.959
So I think that the world is a beautiful place, and I like to see the world from a positive lens and um act accordingly.
00:05:49.040 --> 00:05:50.639
So thank you for having me.
00:05:55.199 --> 00:06:07.199
I'm hoping that you can read from your what your book that's coming up on its 10-year anniversary, which is called Changing Lanes XXD.
00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:20.480
And if you could just one to two minutes, give us an exert so that our audience has a taste for your writing delivery, your thoughts.
00:06:20.879 --> 00:06:22.560
No worries, it's my pleasure.
00:06:22.800 --> 00:06:25.040
I will do that.
00:06:25.360 --> 00:06:30.079
I think, yes, I'm gonna choose this poem.
00:06:30.240 --> 00:06:42.720
I haven't read this poem aloud in a while, and I think it's fitting for the conversation we're having, especially as we're uh in the second week of school in Toronto.
00:06:42.959 --> 00:06:48.079
So uh this poem is entitled Uh Dare to Dream.
00:06:48.560 --> 00:07:14.639
So the book, my first book, Changing Lanes, the first XXV, is a compilation of stories as well as some poetry uh woven into a semi-autobiographical depiction of my life, paying homage to my community, my parents, my family, my mentors, and role models and friends, and the people, places, and things that I've gotten the honor and privilege to be a part of.
00:07:14.800 --> 00:07:18.480
So this poem is entitled Dare to Dream.
00:07:19.519 --> 00:07:21.839
Daydreamer, daydreamer.
00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:24.399
You're needed in this world.
00:07:24.879 --> 00:07:34.000
Daydreaming dreams that are diamonds and pearls, goals and visions of things you want to accomplish, build, or create.
00:07:34.639 --> 00:07:37.680
These thoughts and ideas are needed in this world.
00:07:38.480 --> 00:07:40.160
They're needed in this place.
00:07:40.639 --> 00:07:56.480
They add meaning and life, flavor and taste, pushing conventional notions of reality to the test, thinking beyond the box and limitations that they have that have been created and set.
00:07:57.600 --> 00:07:59.920
Set and cemented in stone.
00:08:00.399 --> 00:08:08.399
There's nothing like creating something, a manifestation of a dream you've had while you're at home all alone.
00:08:09.360 --> 00:08:15.360
Bringing life to those ideas, nurturing them like a baby out of a womb.
00:08:15.680 --> 00:08:24.399
I challenge you to unearth those dreams and never let them lay dormant or stay stowed away like a tomb.
00:08:25.279 --> 00:08:27.680
Boom, that idea was right.
00:08:28.160 --> 00:08:30.639
Boom, that idea was tight.
00:08:30.959 --> 00:08:34.960
Boom, it's worthwhile, it's worth the fight.
00:08:35.679 --> 00:08:45.519
Mixed with the pain and turmoil and those sleepless nights that you will have to endure to bring those feelings to light.
00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:56.639
Your dreams, your visions, your thoughts of the future being bright, being bright, bring a bright light to your life.
00:08:56.960 --> 00:09:00.559
So harness and feed energy to your dream.
00:09:01.200 --> 00:09:08.240
And you have laid the and then you will have laid the foundation and invested time and effort.
00:09:09.279 --> 00:09:13.039
You may need some help, so you might need to assemble a team.
00:09:13.519 --> 00:09:15.600
Until then, daydreamer dream.
00:09:16.480 --> 00:09:20.159
Continue to dream of the things that you have not yet seen.
00:09:21.039 --> 00:09:22.960
Dream, dreamer, dream.
00:09:23.919 --> 00:09:26.240
Dream dreamer dream.
00:09:27.120 --> 00:09:30.799
That is absolutely wonderful, beautiful.
00:09:31.360 --> 00:09:36.960
Now you seem to me as if you've done a little bit of everything.
00:09:38.720 --> 00:09:45.519
You have a bachelor of ads, you're a social worker, you have a master's in social worker.
00:09:45.679 --> 00:09:50.000
We've just discovered that you also are an author and a poet.
00:09:50.399 --> 00:09:52.320
That is truly fascinating.
00:09:52.639 --> 00:09:55.440
Let's start at what I consider the beginning.
00:09:56.399 --> 00:09:59.600
What took you into social work in the first place?
00:10:00.320 --> 00:10:00.639
All right.
00:10:00.720 --> 00:10:06.080
So if we're gonna go for the beginning, the beginning is education or criminology and education.
00:10:06.240 --> 00:10:08.559
What prompted me to get into that lane?
00:10:08.799 --> 00:10:12.320
I would say many things.
00:10:12.480 --> 00:10:17.120
Um, my love uh and passion for community.
00:10:17.679 --> 00:10:30.159
Um, I was inspired by many of my teachers, coaches, pastors, friends, and family members that had always told me I had an innate leadership gift and quality.
00:10:30.559 --> 00:10:39.519
Um so much so I didn't know the gift that I had um when I was young.
00:10:40.080 --> 00:10:50.240
And they often would put me in situations and places and positions to lead and harness that ability.
00:10:50.639 --> 00:11:02.799
As it comes to my primary motivation when I went to school and I started playing basketball officially was to be that change I wanted to see in the world, you know.
00:11:02.960 --> 00:11:21.440
Um growing up in the community that we we grew up, you know, we had a lot of um obstacles put in our way, um, a lot of roadblocks, a lot of stereotypes that kind of wanted to label us as less than and and not worthy and incapable of doing things.
00:11:21.600 --> 00:11:31.840
And for me, that uh put a chip on my shoulder um to defy the odds and to do what many would have deemed the unthinkable.
00:11:32.159 --> 00:11:50.320
Um Christ is at the center of my life, and and that's what kind of motivated me, my my faith and my spirituality and my my belief in culture, heritage, and history and the ancestors that came before me that did that weren't afforded the opportunity.
00:11:50.480 --> 00:11:53.759
So I had to change my lane and do something different.
00:11:53.919 --> 00:12:04.240
Um and education was the way, um, primarily because I had a lot of great teachers, had a lot of great coaches that kind of poured into me and said, Hey, you know what?
00:12:04.399 --> 00:12:08.240
Um you can do it, uh, whether it's through sports or through academia.
00:12:08.399 --> 00:12:11.200
Um you could, you had you're gifted and you and you're special.
00:12:11.360 --> 00:12:18.960
So they they poured into me and and gave me hope when I was hopeless and paved the way when I couldn't see.
00:12:19.200 --> 00:12:23.919
So I decided to go to school to study criminology initially to become a lawyer.
00:12:24.159 --> 00:12:28.639
However, York had a strike and life had to life.
00:12:28.879 --> 00:12:41.360
So I decided to transition and change lanes and become an educator to be that positive role model for younger folks that come from communities like I did.
00:12:41.600 --> 00:12:45.440
And um ultimately for the younger me, for my inner child, right?
00:12:45.600 --> 00:12:59.679
So um that's that's what was the impetus behind um becoming a teacher and and attending school at my local university, which was 10 minutes away from where I where I was raised.
00:12:59.919 --> 00:13:00.559
Yeah.
00:13:00.960 --> 00:13:01.600
Wow.
00:13:02.720 --> 00:13:06.879
Tell me, what is patient-centered relationship?
00:13:07.039 --> 00:13:08.000
What is that?
00:13:10.480 --> 00:13:15.679
Um patient-centered, client-centered um practice or pedagogy.
00:13:16.480 --> 00:13:30.559
It's something that is intrinsically important to the work that we do and that I do as a as a clinician, as a therapist, a social worker, a life coach, however you you want to coin it.
00:13:30.720 --> 00:13:48.240
I think it's important um to meet the client or the person you're working with where they are, you know, highlighting some of their strengths and giving them hope and belief in themselves that it's, you know, um, and life is a series of moments and things that happen.
00:13:48.399 --> 00:14:02.639
Um, it's important to uh in those darkest moments cling to or remember some of the things that you're you're good at, um, the people that empower you and the things that bring you joy.
00:14:02.960 --> 00:14:25.279
So in our first few sessions of engagement, uh I strive to create a therapeutic alliance with my clients or with my staff, um, whereby we could see the person for who they are and not by by virtue of the condition or the traumatic experience they're currently experiencing or going through.
00:14:25.440 --> 00:14:32.960
And yeah, just pull strengths, um, solution focus and strengths from them and and go where they want to go.
00:14:33.120 --> 00:14:52.080
They uh clients typically uh for me, I like to give them the floor to dictate, um, you know, or to express what they hope to gain from this relationship, and I work and walk alongside them as we we journey together towards healing.
00:14:54.799 --> 00:14:56.480
That is certainly interesting.
00:14:57.279 --> 00:15:04.399
I hear the term uh client uh-led, client-focused in many professions.
00:15:05.120 --> 00:15:11.519
Uh I sometimes I'm a little skeptical, but you sound so genuine and authentic in the way you're describing.
00:15:12.639 --> 00:15:16.159
Would you want to talk to us a little bit about your specialization?
00:15:16.320 --> 00:15:27.759
You kind of alluded to being a guide, a mentor, a healer, kind of, as you read in your poet.
00:15:27.919 --> 00:15:30.159
Talk about your specialization, please.
00:15:30.559 --> 00:15:42.639
Um, as it relates to social work, um, I was trained at the University of Toronto with a master's of social work with a specialization in indigenous trauma and resiliency, right?
00:15:43.120 --> 00:16:02.159
Um for me, what I've learned from that experience is a lot of um importance being played to understand as a clinician, we don't have the answers.
00:16:02.399 --> 00:16:08.960
Um it comes from the client, it comes from their experiences.
00:16:09.360 --> 00:16:14.240
Um you know, everyone is triggered and experiences a lot of different things.
00:16:14.399 --> 00:16:19.440
And for example, all three of us could be in a room right now and we're looking at a picture.
00:16:19.679 --> 00:16:25.039
We're looking at, you know, the staircase behind Elton, right?
00:16:25.200 --> 00:16:28.080
It's like, wow, maybe I see the stairs.
00:16:28.320 --> 00:16:33.759
Maybe you see the kettle over there, and maybe someone sees the brown ball on the table.
00:16:33.919 --> 00:16:45.519
We may have gone through the similar or the same experience, but the way we internalize and rationalize and and um heal and grow or or interpret the situation could be different.
00:16:45.679 --> 00:17:18.480
So that's why it's critical to connect with the client and build that reflexive discourse and engagement where you, me as a clinician, uh, I tried my best to attune to my clients and their needs and actually listen to them because oftentimes um it's just they just need a sounding board, someone to listen and reframe things in a different way that is not um deeply related or influenced within their circle of care.
00:17:18.640 --> 00:17:21.279
So I don't know them from anywhere, they don't know me.
00:17:21.359 --> 00:17:23.839
And this is a professional therapeutic relationship.
00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:44.079
I have no biases, no um infested interest in in the outcome, other than to help you to unearth the tools within yourself or to utilize some tools and strategies for healing and um uh healing that could support them along their journey.
00:17:44.400 --> 00:17:47.359
Let me interrupt just a little bit before Elton comes back.
00:17:47.440 --> 00:17:57.920
When you when you talked about the three of us seeing staircase, seeing different different things in the picture, yeah it brought to mind the word the word perspective.
00:17:58.960 --> 00:18:07.119
So, yes, we all see the world from different perspectives, and it's important to value that if you're working with individuals.
00:18:07.359 --> 00:18:08.799
Over to you, Elton.
00:18:09.359 --> 00:18:10.079
Thank you.
00:18:10.319 --> 00:18:24.720
I have to agree with Rita, even in photography, that falls into place because all of us could take a picture, let's say, of a vase, but we all see it differently.
00:18:24.880 --> 00:18:28.960
So we would capture that vase differently, all of us would.
00:18:31.200 --> 00:18:39.039
So um, yes, it is all about uh perspective and the importance of uh respecting that.
00:18:39.599 --> 00:18:58.640
A lot of old people or elderly experience depression, and how do you go about untangling depression so that they don't begin to fade away because of being depressed?
00:19:00.880 --> 00:19:02.960
That is a great question, Elton.
00:19:03.279 --> 00:19:09.279
I mean, every um encounter is unique and different.
00:19:09.519 --> 00:19:15.359
So depending on the client that I'm working with at the time, um, my approach would be different, right?
00:19:15.519 --> 00:19:30.400
Um, but something that is streamlined that most clinicians um and and healthcare providers will provide or would uh administer is a GAD-7 uh or PSQ9.
00:19:30.640 --> 00:19:36.559
Those are some tests in relation to anxiety and depression to kind of score and to rank where they are.
00:19:36.720 --> 00:19:57.200
And then um as it relates to you know, an elderly person or a senior or someone, it's anybody in general that may be feeling you know isolation or depressed, it's okay figuring out what are I like to hearken at the past, like your past is your prologue, your past informs your present and your future.
00:19:57.359 --> 00:20:03.039
So um I try to you know discover different things that they'd like to do, things that bring make them happy.
00:20:03.200 --> 00:20:12.000
Think recall to a time, maybe your childhood, when you were a teenager or a different time in your life that you had a great experience.
00:20:12.160 --> 00:20:13.440
What are those experiences?
00:20:13.680 --> 00:20:21.039
Sometimes we do um, you know, these these things, it's like a timeline.
00:20:21.279 --> 00:20:23.839
Um ace test.
00:20:24.160 --> 00:20:29.200
There's an ace test, so pretty much we'll go and timeline from the earliest time that they remember till now.
00:20:29.440 --> 00:20:30.559
What are the highlights?
00:20:30.640 --> 00:20:33.359
What moments do you give me all the positive moments we had?
00:20:33.440 --> 00:20:48.240
Oh I learned how to ride a bike when I was four, I went to prom when I was in grade 12, I ate my first ice cream, I went on my first pain when I was 15, whatever those things are, and then use those as experiences to to to build from.
00:20:48.400 --> 00:20:49.839
You know, those are positive things.
00:20:50.000 --> 00:20:54.799
Okay, maybe I went to my first concert uh, you know, in 2007.
00:20:54.960 --> 00:20:56.559
I went to go see Fred Hammond.
00:20:56.640 --> 00:20:57.680
Oh, it's amazing.
00:20:57.839 --> 00:20:59.440
Oh, Fred Hammond, that's amazing.
00:20:59.519 --> 00:20:59.920
I know him.
00:21:00.000 --> 00:21:00.880
He's a gospel singer.
00:21:00.960 --> 00:21:01.519
Oh, oh yeah.
00:21:01.599 --> 00:21:03.359
So when's the last time you listen to his music?
00:21:03.519 --> 00:21:04.880
All right, let's play a song.
00:21:05.119 --> 00:21:07.599
And then, okay, when you're playing a song, let's write about it.
00:21:07.680 --> 00:21:08.559
How does it make you feel?
00:21:08.640 --> 00:21:09.759
What what you know what I mean?
00:21:09.920 --> 00:21:12.319
So unearthing those positive things, that's one.
00:21:12.559 --> 00:21:20.559
Two, um connecting them with and and the ports of community, connecting with somebody, you know what I mean?
00:21:20.799 --> 00:21:23.599
Maybe, maybe if you don't have any friends, that's fine.
00:21:23.839 --> 00:21:26.640
But we're in your neighborhood, there's an online community now.
00:21:26.720 --> 00:21:27.759
You can connect online.
00:21:27.839 --> 00:21:30.480
I'm sure there's many different group um programs.
00:21:30.640 --> 00:21:36.880
And if you're at mobile and you can connect in person, go to your local YMCA or community center.
00:21:37.039 --> 00:21:46.319
There's often um programming for seniors or for older folks, whereas Aquafit um and water aerobics is little chess clubs.
00:21:46.400 --> 00:21:55.200
I see when I was a kid, I remember going to a community center seeing uh these older Italian men, um, and they're playing uh bocce ball or something.
00:21:55.279 --> 00:21:56.319
I didn't even know what that was.
00:21:56.480 --> 00:21:59.759
And they're playing cards in the room, and you know, it was every Thursday.
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:12.400
At seven, they're there, you know, and that could give you some a sense of community and belonging um that could help you get you out of um the funk that you're in.
00:22:12.799 --> 00:22:22.480
Um yeah, and just try to watch and do things that make you laugh and exciting, watch a comedy show, go for a walk, get some fresh air, drink some water.
00:22:22.640 --> 00:22:25.920
You know, those are some of the tools that I would use.
00:22:27.119 --> 00:22:40.880
We're speaking with Augustine Obe, who is a clinician and a master's in social work, and does a lot of his work with seniors.
00:22:41.599 --> 00:22:50.799
As you know, on Speaker International, we seek to inform, to inspire, and to educate, and there's no question that that is happening through this conversation.
00:22:51.359 --> 00:23:00.799
And so, Augustine, I'd like for you to tell us, tell our audience who or what do you believe is responsible for the person you are today?
00:23:01.519 --> 00:23:04.960
Who or what do you think is responsible for the person you are today?
00:23:05.839 --> 00:23:06.960
Who or what?
00:23:07.920 --> 00:23:09.200
Great question.
00:23:09.920 --> 00:23:10.960
Great question.
00:23:11.519 --> 00:23:17.359
Listen, I'm gonna who or what?
00:23:17.519 --> 00:23:39.200
I would say first and foremost, um in the literal sense, my parents are um, you know, what has made me literally um here today, and deeper um I'm I'm a I'm a religious man, I believe in Christ, I believe in God, you know, at the center.
00:23:39.359 --> 00:23:40.559
So he's responsible.
00:23:40.720 --> 00:23:42.480
All blessings flow through them.
00:23:43.119 --> 00:24:07.039
Um but deeper than and also in addition to that, I'll say my family, my brothers, my my my teammates from sports, my close circle of friends, um, the schools that I've gone to, the experiences that I've had, uh, the learning that I've done, I think I I can't attribute it to one thing, um, or one person.
00:24:07.680 --> 00:24:22.400
Um, my community growing up in Janet Finch, my church community, going to church, my basketball community, my social work community, my education community, my music community, um, and the people, you know, some fans or supporters or however you deem it.
00:24:22.480 --> 00:24:28.799
Like, I am not who I am, the man you see before you by virtue of my own doing.
00:24:29.039 --> 00:24:46.720
Rather, it's a compilation and uh aggregation of everybody that has poured into me all the interactions, the conversations that we've had, the shows that I've watched, everything has has informed my nurture um into my maturation into who I am today.
00:24:46.880 --> 00:25:04.960
So I would say life, life has inspired me to be who I am today, and and I hope to bring life to this conversation and also to share life with others so that they could uh be who they want to be or need to be, or who they envision themselves to be.
00:25:05.440 --> 00:25:08.720
I want to go back to seniors.
00:25:09.200 --> 00:25:20.960
You know, what's overlooked, I think, are systemic barriers that seniors face, like hypertension, diabetes.
00:25:22.000 --> 00:25:33.759
How do you deal with that along with depression and whatever other challenges that your patient or patients have?
00:25:36.640 --> 00:25:37.519
A great question.
00:25:37.680 --> 00:25:52.960
I think with seniors, I work with anybody for that matter, but specifically seniors, I think there's a it's very nuanced and it it requires an uh integrated, multidisciplinary approach, right?
00:25:53.279 --> 00:26:03.039
Um, as you mentioned, you know, hypertension, diabetes, like health, physical health um challenges, mobility, um, those things matter.
00:26:03.200 --> 00:26:26.000
Um, and in the work that I do, I connect with a care team, um, connect with folks that are that specialize in different disciplines, whether it's nurse practitioners, whether it's social workers, whether it's educators, teachers, facilitators, programmers, um, admin, um, everybody plays a role.
00:26:26.319 --> 00:26:29.119
And that's my philosophy in life.
00:26:29.359 --> 00:26:35.599
Everybody matters, every person's story matters, everyone's experience matters and should be respected.
00:26:35.839 --> 00:26:49.680
And while while caring for and working with um senior senior population, I think it's also important to understand or to acknowledge that things are a lot quicker these days.
00:26:50.000 --> 00:26:51.519
Technology is real.
00:26:51.759 --> 00:26:57.440
Um, learning new things as as we continue to press forward.
00:26:57.839 --> 00:26:58.160
Yes.
00:26:58.319 --> 00:27:07.839
So it's important to connect with the care team to provide services and supports for everyone for the clients that we work with.
00:27:08.000 --> 00:27:10.160
So it's challenging dealing with core mobility.
00:27:10.240 --> 00:27:14.160
Some people have mobility issues, so they can't access care, they can't come to the space.
00:27:14.319 --> 00:27:17.519
Maybe have, you know, um food insecurity, that's another challenge.
00:27:17.680 --> 00:27:27.599
Maybe have access to the internet, which is a challenge, or navigating all the forms and paperwork that needs to be done for OES and uh, you know, pension and all these things.
00:27:27.680 --> 00:27:45.519
So I think it requires a lot of attention to detail, a lot of patience, and a lot of um uh reflexive conversations and and service navigation um when working with with with seniors specifically.
00:27:47.519 --> 00:27:56.799
You know, uh during this conversation, you quoted someone famous who said, be the change you want to see in others.
00:27:56.960 --> 00:27:59.839
So I don't know if you remember saying that.
00:28:00.240 --> 00:28:13.759
Yeah, but I want you to think of perhaps a time, maybe professionally or personally, when you had to say enough and share that with us.
00:28:15.440 --> 00:28:23.920
When I had to say enough in what in regards to what anything you feel comfortable talking about.
00:28:27.039 --> 00:28:54.000
And the work that I do within especially within the healthcare and community settings and um, you know, working with the uh underprivileged or under-resourced, um, there's a lot of conversations, a lot of dialogues, a lot of meeting at the table and conferences and meeting after meeting after meeting, and what should we do?
00:28:55.759 --> 00:29:07.440
And oftentimes it's just conversations and very little movement um due to bureaucratic things and red tape and budget lines, etc.
00:29:07.680 --> 00:29:07.920
etc.
00:29:08.160 --> 00:29:08.400
Right.
00:29:08.640 --> 00:29:20.000
So um, you know, when we're in those conversations, those rooms and those spaces, I listen before I speak.
00:29:21.359 --> 00:29:24.160
And then I'll just, you know, offer a suggestion.
00:29:25.279 --> 00:29:38.240
Um the little bit of experience that I have, and I know is that first of all, the solutions don't exclusively come from this table or shouldn't.
00:29:38.880 --> 00:29:43.920
It needs to be informed by the people that we're supporting.
00:29:44.240 --> 00:29:51.039
So if they're not included in the conversation, then what what's the point of it all?
00:29:51.440 --> 00:30:11.119
We're probably coming up with solutions that for a challenge that we're not possibly experiencing or have little to no connection with when the person right here, right in front of you, or the people that we're supporting are right there and they're speaking, but we're not listening.
00:30:11.200 --> 00:30:12.480
So enough is enough.
00:30:12.640 --> 00:30:14.160
Why are we having all these meetings?
00:30:14.480 --> 00:30:17.920
We have this catered meeting with these uh finger foods and all this stuff.
00:30:18.079 --> 00:30:24.559
How about we take that money for that catering and go donate it to a shelter and buy some things for them?
00:30:24.720 --> 00:30:30.480
How about we use that and reallocate the funds for something that is that is meaningful and challenging?
00:30:30.640 --> 00:30:35.440
So I feel like you know, there's time, oftentimes, many times, when I feel like enough's enough.
00:30:35.519 --> 00:30:37.839
Like all these meetings are are are pointless.
00:30:38.000 --> 00:30:56.240
They're not really pointless, but the it could be better, the time and the resources can be better utilized in community, and we we would be better off if we listen to the folks that we're supporting instead of coming up with ideas for the challenges that we're not currently experiencing.
00:30:56.480 --> 00:31:02.880
Um, so yeah, that that's that's one of the times, one of the many times when I say enough is enough.
00:31:04.559 --> 00:31:06.720
I can agree with you.
00:31:07.680 --> 00:31:21.200
Sometimes when you are, especially when you're on a roll and you're moving, and all of a sudden now you gotta stop to go to this meeting, and you're like, look, you know, y'all go ahead and do your thing.
00:31:21.440 --> 00:31:22.880
I'm rolling here.
00:31:23.680 --> 00:31:26.400
I got my patients, they're happy right now.
00:31:26.640 --> 00:31:33.279
I I just want to hang out with them for a little bit, but no, you're gonna make me sit in this meeting and break my rhythm.
00:31:33.519 --> 00:31:51.440
So, yeah, I can I can definitely understand that situation and how if it persists, it not only hurts the patient, but also hurts the caregivers' uh passion because it's broken.
00:31:51.680 --> 00:32:00.799
Um, not that it's it's not that it's you would do anything to hurt your patients, but it allows you not to continue being persistent.
00:32:01.119 --> 00:32:13.680
So, speaking of persistent, there are cultural generation stigmas that go along with being you know old.
00:32:13.920 --> 00:32:18.799
And so one of those things happens to be mental health.
00:32:19.200 --> 00:32:27.920
So, how do you get past the stigma uh to help individuals with mental health?
00:32:29.759 --> 00:32:30.240
Stigma.
00:32:30.319 --> 00:32:45.039
I actually have a presentation, a keynote presentation that I that I um developed and delivered around um destigmatizing mental health and and having a conversation, especially among is it recorded?
00:32:45.119 --> 00:32:46.240
Did you record it?
00:32:46.640 --> 00:32:48.160
No, I don't record it.
00:32:48.559 --> 00:32:51.519
So I can do it again and again at different places.
00:32:53.440 --> 00:32:54.720
Okay, go ahead.
00:32:54.799 --> 00:32:58.319
I'm I don't know.
00:33:00.000 --> 00:33:05.279
Hey, for anybody listening, if you want to book me to come do a session, I can do it for you, no problem.
00:33:06.079 --> 00:33:06.720
Face it.
00:33:06.880 --> 00:33:15.119
Black people, if there's somebody in your in your family and they have challenges, you don't usually don't talk about it.
00:33:15.359 --> 00:33:16.960
It's not something you talk about.
00:33:17.519 --> 00:33:34.240
I had an uh the woman could play piano, she had a voice like an angel, but after her being with us for an hour, they would tell her she needs to go to her room and rest because of her mental challenges.
00:33:34.640 --> 00:33:45.759
So, how do you get past that stigma of people not talking about it or the individual who actually has mental health, maybe they don't even want to discuss it?
00:33:45.839 --> 00:33:47.279
So, how do you get past that?
00:33:48.240 --> 00:33:49.759
I think it's a great question.
00:33:49.839 --> 00:33:51.119
It's it's tough.
00:33:51.359 --> 00:34:10.320
Um the solution or an approach that I have found to be effective is just having the conversation, but teaching it in a way that is more palatable, um, and giving examples of, you know, I think education is the center.
00:34:10.559 --> 00:34:14.079
A lot of people don't want to talk about things they're not educated on.
00:34:14.320 --> 00:34:24.880
And because within, especially within, you know, BIPOC, within black community specifically, um, it's it's taboo, like, oh no, like we don't want to talk about this, right?
00:34:25.360 --> 00:34:33.199
But the I firmly believe, and shout out to my professor, um, Jane Milton Moss, she says this thing.
00:34:33.360 --> 00:34:38.000
Um, you need to name it in order, you gotta name it to tame it.
00:34:38.320 --> 00:34:38.880
All right.
00:34:39.039 --> 00:34:40.639
So you gotta speak on it.
00:34:40.880 --> 00:34:43.599
We're talking about this so we can address it.
00:34:43.760 --> 00:34:54.800
Um, it's better that way than then, you know, prevent uh, you know, sweeping it under the rug and pretending like it's not there, and then things faster and then they could explode, right?
00:34:54.960 --> 00:35:02.400
Where on the flip side, when you have the conversation, you educate people, okay, this is what this is, or could potentially be.
00:35:02.559 --> 00:35:06.800
Someone is, you know, mental health is a spectrum.
00:35:07.280 --> 00:35:16.880
There's I think life would be so bland if all we experienced was joy, or all we experienced was pain, right?
00:35:17.280 --> 00:35:21.519
Um all we experienced highs, but never any lows.
00:35:21.679 --> 00:35:24.000
It would be it'll be regular, it'll be boring, right?
00:35:24.159 --> 00:35:37.119
One of my favorite artists, um, Sean Carter, Jay-Z, he has a song, and in that song, he said it has a line where it says, in order to experience joy, you need pain.
00:35:37.519 --> 00:35:40.000
Somebody's loss is another's gain.
00:35:40.239 --> 00:35:41.519
You know what I'm saying?
00:35:41.760 --> 00:35:43.920
Like, dichotomy of life.
00:35:44.079 --> 00:35:54.079
So within that conversation of mental health and um, you know, yeah, I think it's important.
00:35:54.159 --> 00:35:56.159
You just gotta educate what are these things?
00:35:56.239 --> 00:35:57.199
What is mental health?
00:35:57.440 --> 00:35:58.480
Mental health is this.
00:35:58.559 --> 00:36:00.960
Okay, what are what is depression?
00:36:01.280 --> 00:36:07.840
Depression is this, uh, seasonal acute depression said it happens in the summer months, in the winter months, and da-da-da-da.
00:36:08.159 --> 00:36:25.119
So if people don't know, and a lot of people, you know, in school, if you go went to school in the traditional in our system in Toronto or in the Ontario, health, you got like one health class, we learn like very little about mental health and and and those things.
00:36:25.280 --> 00:36:36.000
So I think it's educate, it starts first with education and then creating um braver and safer spaces for folks to to talk and discuss without fear of judgment.
00:36:36.239 --> 00:36:46.320
And and then it goes to the each one teach one model whereby you share what you learn and and hopefully you could spread that knowledge one person at a time.
00:36:48.719 --> 00:36:52.239
That's worth thinking about and reflecting upon.
00:36:52.719 --> 00:36:56.079
Life would be boring if all you experienced was joy.
00:36:56.719 --> 00:36:59.840
So you need to experience a little bit of everything.
00:37:00.079 --> 00:37:06.079
Although, as you know, as we know, some people experience the lows longer than some people.
00:37:06.480 --> 00:37:06.960
Exactly.
00:37:07.280 --> 00:37:20.559
But help us to um share with us three habits you would like to see all people practice on a daily basis to maintain some kind of well-being.
00:37:21.039 --> 00:37:32.480
Three habits three habits that people uh should do to maintain some kind of well-being.
00:37:32.880 --> 00:37:33.840
Well, okay, three habits.
00:37:34.079 --> 00:37:41.199
Okay, first and foremost, very important, super slept on is sleep.
00:37:42.480 --> 00:37:43.760
You see what I did there?
00:37:44.559 --> 00:37:45.760
Yeah, sleep.
00:37:46.400 --> 00:37:47.760
You gotta sleep, man.
00:37:47.920 --> 00:37:55.039
Sleep is very important, not only for your physical body, but for your mind, for your soul, for your body, for everything.
00:37:55.119 --> 00:37:56.079
You gotta sleep.
00:37:56.320 --> 00:38:03.920
Try to sleep and regulate your sleep as best as possible, and um you regulate your circadian rhythm.
00:38:04.239 --> 00:38:05.840
I think that's very important.
00:38:06.079 --> 00:38:08.400
That's when everything gets restored and repaired.
00:38:08.559 --> 00:38:09.440
So sleep.
00:38:09.599 --> 00:38:17.119
Secondly, I would say um it's something that we all have within us, where we're we're what we're made of.
00:38:17.760 --> 00:38:18.400
Water.
00:38:18.639 --> 00:38:22.159
You gotta drink water, you gotta drink water.
00:38:22.320 --> 00:38:23.199
It's very important.
00:38:23.360 --> 00:38:24.159
I have a headache.
00:38:24.559 --> 00:38:25.199
Do you drink water?
00:38:25.280 --> 00:38:26.400
No, maybe that's why.
00:38:26.559 --> 00:38:27.519
Drink some water.
00:38:27.920 --> 00:38:28.639
Drink some water.
00:38:28.719 --> 00:38:30.800
I think the hydration is very important.
00:38:31.119 --> 00:38:36.480
And third, I think the uh the importance of it should have been first.
00:38:36.880 --> 00:38:40.639
For me, believing in something greater than yourself.
00:38:41.280 --> 00:38:52.079
You know, um that for me holds me accountable to myself and to others and to try to lead a positive lifestyle.
00:38:52.239 --> 00:38:53.440
And I'll add one more.
00:38:53.599 --> 00:39:08.400
I would say um community, the power of community, um, having your tribe, your family, your chosen family, people that you could connect with when times are low, people that support you when times are high and low.
00:39:08.559 --> 00:39:18.079
Um, and and you also taking up that mantle and that baton to also be that person for for someone else, you know, and to be there for them too.
00:39:18.159 --> 00:39:21.599
So it's it's like a symbiotic relationship, I think that's important.
00:39:22.000 --> 00:39:24.960
Um, and if you can, I'll add more five.
00:39:25.119 --> 00:39:26.639
Get some fresh air.
00:39:27.119 --> 00:39:28.880
Get some fresh air, go for a walk.
00:39:29.039 --> 00:39:34.000
Just go for walking, low impact, just walk, it's free, just walk.
00:39:34.239 --> 00:39:34.960
That's it.
00:39:37.360 --> 00:39:38.719
I mean, also reading.
00:39:38.800 --> 00:39:44.239
I there's so many things, but yeah, there's so many things, but though I'm just gonna keep it at five.
00:39:44.320 --> 00:39:46.719
I think um, yeah, we'll just leave it there.
00:39:46.800 --> 00:39:49.039
But reading is very important, it's fundamental.
00:39:49.760 --> 00:40:03.360
It's uh reading is is good for the mind, and it allows your mind to travel places that maybe no one else will ever go to, but that's your that's you know your journey.
00:40:04.320 --> 00:40:18.880
The health system is beginning to feel the weight of people needing it, eight people are getting older, more people are laying into our into our system.
00:40:19.119 --> 00:40:32.480
How do you see the I don't want to say nursing, but the medical profession supporting that load without burning out?
00:40:33.519 --> 00:40:36.719
I know I'm gonna we're going right back to the sleep thing, I know.
00:40:37.599 --> 00:40:38.800
I think it's all related.
00:40:38.880 --> 00:40:51.280
That's a great question, and something that I feel like now a lot of organizations and levels of government are thinking about in a meaningful way.
00:40:51.440 --> 00:40:55.199
I think it's important um to have those conversational dialogues.
00:40:55.360 --> 00:41:26.559
And the reality is the boomers that there's a lot of seniors, and and as if you can see and tell, there's a lot of uh retirement homes or old age facilities being built, um, which is important because we have a duty of care as Canadians um that are taxpaying citizens to care for the families and people who built this country um with their economics, right?
00:41:26.639 --> 00:41:45.039
So I think it's a lot more nurses and doctors and uh social workers and teachers need to be um trained, um adequately supported, or else uh there's uh something that I've noticed.
00:41:45.280 --> 00:41:47.039
There's been a lot of flight.
00:41:47.280 --> 00:42:02.800
A lot of the top people that get educated and they leave because the conditions of the workplace are not favorable oftentimes, but I think we're gonna have to reimagine what care looks like um for families.
00:42:02.880 --> 00:42:16.239
And we we examine what retirement looks like and what the family structure looks like, and I think in many ways it could be a good thing.
00:42:16.400 --> 00:42:25.599
Um, whereby, you know, in Canada or North America, and the dream is like, oh, you I'm gonna buy my own house and live in my own condo and do my own thing.
00:42:25.840 --> 00:42:34.880
But for me, hearkening back to my history, um, being Ghanaian and of Ghanaian descent, um, is a village, took a village to raise a child.
00:42:35.039 --> 00:42:36.079
You know what I mean?
00:42:36.320 --> 00:42:37.599
We worked as a community.
00:42:37.840 --> 00:42:42.079
You lived in the a household where as multi-generational.
00:42:42.480 --> 00:42:49.039
You have a child, you have their mother, maybe their grandparents or great-grands, aunties and uncles, all in the community.
00:42:49.280 --> 00:43:04.480
And I think that communal living is a good thing, not only for maintenance of culture and identity, but also uh for financial uh reasons as well, and also cut just consumption.
00:43:05.440 --> 00:43:08.480
Our footprint is too too large, you know.
00:43:08.639 --> 00:43:12.719
We're we're destroying the planet um by individualism.
00:43:12.800 --> 00:43:45.840
So I think you know the the name of the game is community and and village-centered living, community-centered living and a multi-generational existence that's at the heart and the essence and the genesis of our community, and sometimes we're counseled by others to move away from that, and I think it only serves to harm us more than do us good.
00:43:47.119 --> 00:43:55.199
But I want you to tell us three things that you admire about Augustine Obin.
00:43:55.760 --> 00:43:59.519
Three things that I admire about myself, yes, sir.
00:44:01.360 --> 00:44:03.519
I never heard that one before.
00:44:04.000 --> 00:44:04.880
Now I know that.
00:44:04.960 --> 00:44:06.079
That's why I'm asking it.
00:44:06.320 --> 00:44:07.360
That's a good question.
00:44:07.599 --> 00:44:09.840
Um wow.
00:44:10.400 --> 00:44:18.239
Three things that I admire about myself, Augustine Obank.
00:44:18.400 --> 00:44:18.800
Jeez.
00:44:20.159 --> 00:44:20.960
Passion.
00:44:21.280 --> 00:44:30.239
My passion for um literacy, for community, my passion for community.
00:44:30.400 --> 00:44:31.199
You know what I mean?
00:44:31.360 --> 00:44:32.480
I just love community.
00:44:32.559 --> 00:44:45.039
I yeah, I value, I admire that about myself, my passion for community and building, building together, not tearing down, building, building, building, building.
00:44:45.280 --> 00:44:57.039
Um, I also admire my tenacious resilience when it comes to my my pursuits of projects and or education.
00:44:58.079 --> 00:45:00.480
Um, you know, literacy.
00:45:00.559 --> 00:45:01.920
Like I love learning, learning.
00:45:02.000 --> 00:45:03.519
I just love learning.
00:45:03.840 --> 00:45:13.519
Um I admire that about myself, my passion for for continual knowledge and seeking of wisdom and discernment.
00:45:13.599 --> 00:45:14.079
Yeah.
00:45:14.320 --> 00:45:18.880
And then lastly, one thing I admire about Gustin.
00:45:19.119 --> 00:45:22.000
Um admire.
00:45:25.039 --> 00:45:26.960
I admire Gustin's heart.
00:45:27.199 --> 00:45:27.840
I think.
00:45:30.480 --> 00:45:31.119
Yeah.
00:45:32.719 --> 00:45:39.440
I move with a spirit of love in all things I do.
00:45:40.000 --> 00:45:49.199
Um, oftentimes I wear my heart on my shoulders and on my sleeve, or so to say, and uh, you know, sometimes it gets a little hurt.
00:45:49.760 --> 00:45:52.639
But if I love you, I love you.
00:45:52.880 --> 00:45:53.760
You know what I mean?
00:45:53.840 --> 00:46:02.320
And if I rock with you, I rock with you, and I'm gonna I'm not gonna change who I am because you don't appreciate that.
00:46:02.960 --> 00:46:10.239
This is who I am, and I'm not changing, you know, so I admire my heart and everything that I do, I put my my all into it.
00:46:10.320 --> 00:46:11.599
My heart's awesome.
00:46:12.000 --> 00:46:13.360
I admire that.
00:46:14.159 --> 00:46:16.320
Yeah, that was a great question.
00:46:17.119 --> 00:46:19.039
Okay, just one more question from Rika.
00:46:19.519 --> 00:46:31.840
When you thought about coming on uh this channel, was there anything in specific uh specifically that you wanted to that you wanted to talk about?
00:46:32.079 --> 00:46:36.000
I mean yes and no.
00:46:36.960 --> 00:46:51.440
No, because I like to approach each interview that I do or each podcast I do or conversation that I do, um, typically without any um context.
00:46:52.239 --> 00:46:54.320
I don't want to know the questions.
00:46:54.639 --> 00:46:56.320
I don't I don't care.
00:46:56.719 --> 00:46:57.840
And this is why.
00:46:58.079 --> 00:47:04.559
I want to provide the most authentic response to a question that is not scripted.
00:47:04.800 --> 00:47:05.599
Because why?
00:47:05.760 --> 00:47:07.519
It came from the heart.
00:47:07.920 --> 00:47:10.639
This is what I feel in this present moment.
00:47:10.880 --> 00:47:14.079
So you know, I didn't have anything I wanted to speak about.
00:47:14.239 --> 00:47:32.079
However, I was um delighted and honored and felt privileged of the opportunity to come on your platform and to speak and to connect and share my knowledge of whatever questions that you had for me.
00:47:32.239 --> 00:47:34.480
I think the platform is amazing.
00:47:34.639 --> 00:47:46.320
Um, if there's something that I do want to and I try to convey in all of my conversations with folks, is simply you matter.
00:47:47.519 --> 00:47:53.360
You're important, you're loved, you're here for a reason.
00:47:53.679 --> 00:47:56.960
Believe in yourself, you can do it.
00:47:57.519 --> 00:48:15.840
And life is gonna life, there's gonna be ups and downs, there's gonna be trials and tribulations, there are gonna be roadblocks, there's gonna be amazing days, there's gonna be not so amazing days, but one thing that you do have and is important to be thankful for and to give gratitude and appreciate you have life.
00:48:16.000 --> 00:48:18.960
So from you have life, you have another day to try.
00:48:19.119 --> 00:48:21.199
So it's that it's that simple.
00:48:21.280 --> 00:48:25.280
And I'll just read something from the back of my book, which is like my message.
00:48:25.440 --> 00:48:43.519
And it's like the most inspiring thing, the most inspiring thing um that I'm able sorry, the most inspiring thing is that I'm able to share my story in hopes that it will encourage you to change, to chase your dreams and to make it reality.
00:48:44.000 --> 00:48:46.719
I believe everybody has greatness inside of them.
00:48:46.880 --> 00:48:48.880
Everybody has it within them, and you could do it.
00:48:48.960 --> 00:48:50.000
You just gotta believe.
00:48:50.079 --> 00:48:56.320
Uh, and with this tagline, this is what my I'm screaming this to the day that I go.
00:48:56.880 --> 00:49:01.760
Remember, it's never too late to change lanes.
00:49:01.840 --> 00:49:03.199
It's never too late.
00:49:03.519 --> 00:49:06.880
You could have started in a negative path, things could have been not so good.
00:49:06.960 --> 00:49:07.599
It's okay.
00:49:07.760 --> 00:49:08.559
You can still go.
00:49:08.639 --> 00:49:11.199
Hey, that means you got a lot of up to go, upside.
00:49:11.280 --> 00:49:12.559
The upside is crazy, right?
00:49:12.639 --> 00:49:16.559
So I think everybody has a power of choice.
00:49:16.719 --> 00:49:22.079
Life is about a series of yeses and no's, what you say yes to and what you say no to.
00:49:22.159 --> 00:49:37.360
And I implore and encourage everybody who's listening or who has the opportunity to hear that invest in yourself because you matter, your story matters, your experience matters, and you are here for a reason.
00:49:37.599 --> 00:49:53.360
Try to find out what that reason is and live it to the fullest, live it to the maximum because somebody's watching, and somebody could be inspired, and somebody can learn, and somebody could could could be there to provide assistance if you need it.
00:49:53.519 --> 00:49:55.440
So just share your story.
00:49:57.280 --> 00:49:58.239
You know what?
00:49:58.719 --> 00:50:02.239
My next question, you just answered it in what you said.
00:50:02.800 --> 00:50:12.239
You just answered my next, and my final question was going to be what is one thing you would like our listeners to take away from this conversation with you today?
00:50:12.559 --> 00:50:13.760
And you just said it.
00:50:13.920 --> 00:50:20.239
You mat you matter, your story is important, live your life, dream.
00:50:20.400 --> 00:50:21.760
I I really appreciate that.
00:50:21.840 --> 00:50:27.360
That was going to be my final question to you, but you've answered it for us, Augustine Obin.
00:50:28.159 --> 00:50:28.880
Thank you.
00:50:29.199 --> 00:50:30.800
No problem, pleasure.
00:50:31.119 --> 00:50:31.920
My pleasure.
00:50:32.800 --> 00:50:34.639
This has been wonderful.
00:50:34.800 --> 00:50:37.280
Uh, this has been inspirational.
00:50:38.079 --> 00:51:01.280
Uh, this has been authentic, this has been relaxing, and this has definitely been a conversation as opposed to a question and answer situation, and I really do uh appreciate that.
00:51:01.440 --> 00:51:19.679
I am so impressed with your passion, your devotion to your profession, and you always perceive whatever you do with love, and that kept coming up.
00:51:19.840 --> 00:51:23.360
Two words that kept coming up with love and joy.
00:51:23.920 --> 00:51:32.480
Those two things are so important, especially when you happen to be a medical practitioner.
00:51:32.880 --> 00:51:43.280
And I want to thank you so much for finally getting here after it took a year uh to get here, but that's okay.
00:51:43.440 --> 00:51:50.719
You know, I believe that there's a you know, the whenever things happen, that is the right time.
00:51:50.880 --> 00:51:53.920
That's that's the right time for it to happen.
00:51:54.159 --> 00:51:56.320
So uh thank you, thank you so much.
00:51:56.400 --> 00:51:59.280
And Riga, do you have anything you want to add to that?
00:52:00.079 --> 00:52:06.239
Nothing to add, but to say I really appreciate having this conversation with you.
00:52:06.800 --> 00:52:12.239
I am a forever learner, and today I learned quite a few things from you.
00:52:12.480 --> 00:52:17.039
So go enjoy, go enjoy, go enjoy.
00:52:17.679 --> 00:52:19.519
Appreciate it, appreciate you all, man.
00:52:19.679 --> 00:52:23.119
Appreciate the opportunity for folks that want to check me out.
00:52:23.199 --> 00:52:27.440
You can hit me up on my website, augustinobang.com.
00:52:27.679 --> 00:52:31.760
That's Augustin A-U-G-U-S-T-I-N-E.
00:52:32.639 --> 00:52:39.199
Augustine last name, obangob.com, augustinobang.com.
00:52:39.679 --> 00:52:41.199
And yeah, you can follow me.
00:52:41.360 --> 00:52:43.840
Just Google my name, you should find some things.
00:52:43.920 --> 00:52:45.679
But it's a pleasure being on the show.
00:52:45.760 --> 00:52:48.159
I hope you all have a wonderful rest of the day.
00:52:48.320 --> 00:52:49.519
And thanks for listening.
00:52:49.679 --> 00:52:50.960
Appreciate y'all.
