ÜBER DIESE EPISODE
Can you be a faithful Christian and simply decide you don’t need the church?
In Season 2, Episode 6 of the Scripture Matters Podcast — “The Church Matters,” Jonathan Sanford and Cliff Thompson move beyond the familiar definitions and ask a much deeper question: Why does the church matter so much to Jesus Christ?
This conversation gets personal as Jonathan shares a painful childhood memory of repeatedly asking his father to come worship, only to hear, “I’m not going to worship with a bunch of hypocrites.” How should we respond when hypocrisy, disappointment, conflict, or the failures of Christians cause people to distance themselves from the church?
Jonathan and Cliff also examine a truth that changes the entire conversation: the church does not belong to us. It belongs to Christ. He purchased it with His blood, He alone is its Head, and His authority—not culture, personalities, human traditions, or religious organizations—must determine its identity, worship, doctrine, and mission.
The church is filled with imperfect people, but it belongs to a perfect Savior.
Before we dismiss the church because of what people have done to it, perhaps we need to strip away the layers we have added and see again the beauty of what Jesus purchased, Jesus loves, and Jesus still leads.
Because in 2026, perhaps more than ever...
The Church Matters.

00:00:10.240 --> 00:00:13.679
The wedding has finally arrived.
00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:24.320
Months of planning, hundreds of phone calls, thousands of little details, and now everything is ready.
00:00:24.640 --> 00:00:26.800
Family begins filling the seats.
00:00:27.039 --> 00:00:28.640
Friends greet one another.
00:00:28.719 --> 00:00:29.679
The music starts.
00:00:29.920 --> 00:00:30.800
People smile.
00:00:31.120 --> 00:00:35.600
Some quietly wipe away tears before the ceremony even begins.
00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:38.479
Then everyone stands.
00:00:38.960 --> 00:00:51.359
The doors swing open, and there she is, the bride, beautiful, radiant, walking slowly toward the man who's been waiting for her.
00:00:51.600 --> 00:00:53.600
And every eye follows her.
00:00:53.840 --> 00:00:56.640
Every eye that is, except one.
00:00:57.439 --> 00:01:00.719
Instead, there is one empty chair.
00:01:01.200 --> 00:01:09.920
Front row reserved for someone who had been specially invited but chose not to come.
00:01:10.239 --> 00:01:14.959
It wasn't because they were sick, it wasn't even because they couldn't travel.
00:01:15.280 --> 00:01:19.280
They simply decided I don't really need to be there.
00:01:19.680 --> 00:01:25.439
They sent a message instead saying, I love both of you.
00:01:25.599 --> 00:01:27.920
I truly support your marriage.
00:01:32.400 --> 00:01:35.760
Folks, just imagine saying that to the bride.
00:01:35.920 --> 00:01:37.040
Nothing personal.
00:01:37.200 --> 00:01:38.000
I love you.
00:01:38.159 --> 00:01:41.760
I just don't care enough about your wedding to actually be there.
00:01:42.239 --> 00:01:53.599
You would never expect those words to strengthen the relationship because love always desires to be present.
00:01:53.920 --> 00:02:00.719
Which makes me wonder, folks, how often has Jesus heard something remarkably similar?
00:02:01.120 --> 00:02:03.760
Words like, Lord, I love you.
00:02:03.920 --> 00:02:06.159
Yes, I believe in you.
00:02:06.640 --> 00:02:09.120
I just don't need your church.
00:02:09.520 --> 00:02:13.439
The bridegroom cannot be separated from his bride.
00:02:13.599 --> 00:02:15.520
The scripture never does.
00:02:15.759 --> 00:02:17.199
So why do we?
00:02:17.759 --> 00:02:33.599
Maybe it's because somewhere along the way, friends, the church stopped becoming precious and started becoming optional, something to attend instead of someone Christ purchased with his own blood.
00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:39.439
But what if we have misunderstood the church all along?
00:02:39.680 --> 00:02:54.080
What if we have been looking at the bride through layers of dust, tradition, personal disappointment, church politics, hypocrisy, and even human failure?
00:02:54.319 --> 00:02:59.439
Until we can barely recognize the beauty Jesus sees.
00:02:59.840 --> 00:03:07.439
Maybe the problem isn't that Christ's bride has somehow become less beautiful.
00:03:07.840 --> 00:03:12.240
Maybe it's that we've forgotten how to look at her.
00:03:12.560 --> 00:03:22.479
So before we ask whether the church matters, perhaps we should first ask, why does she matter so much to Christ?
00:03:22.800 --> 00:03:30.639
Because if we can answer that one question, everything else will begin to truly make sense.
00:03:30.879 --> 00:03:35.360
And as always, that's why Scripture Matters.
00:03:35.680 --> 00:03:41.039

00:04:34.879 --> 00:04:42.240
Well, good afternoon, good folks, and welcome back once again to another episode of the Scripture Matters Podcast.
00:04:42.399 --> 00:04:50.560
If perhaps this is your first opportunity to join us here on the Scripture Matters Podcast, let us begin by introducing ourselves.
00:04:50.800 --> 00:04:52.560
My name is Jonathan Sanford.
00:04:52.639 --> 00:04:58.399
I am blessed to serve as the pulpit minister for the good brethren of the Waters Road Church of Christ.
00:04:58.560 --> 00:04:59.920
And I'm Cliff Thompson.
00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:05.279
I serve as one of the elders at Waters Road, and I also teach in our adult Bible class program.
00:05:05.439 --> 00:05:19.120
And we want you to know that whether you are watching us on YouTube or possibly Facebook or listening through one of the many podcast platforms, we're so, so very thankful you have chosen to spend this time with us this afternoon.
00:05:19.360 --> 00:05:20.399
Yeah, we certainly are.
00:05:20.480 --> 00:05:30.959
And we want to take this opportunity to recognize my son Billy Sanford, who helps to make things go in the background during each of these episodes of the Scripture Matters podcast.
00:05:31.199 --> 00:05:34.480
Without his help, this would not be possible.
00:05:35.199 --> 00:05:43.279
And Jonathan, before we move into today's conversation, we should briefly look back at last week's episode, Truth Matters.
00:05:43.600 --> 00:05:44.000
That's right.
00:05:44.160 --> 00:05:53.199
Last week we established that truth is not something that we as human beings create, reshape, or redefine.
00:05:53.279 --> 00:05:58.160
Instead, truth comes from God and is revealed to us through his word.
00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:08.800
We also challenged ourselves to love that truth when it corrects us and to communicate it to others along with the love and character of Jesus.
00:06:09.040 --> 00:06:16.959
And we really appreciate each one of you who watched, listened, commented, shared, and liked last week's conversation.
00:06:17.199 --> 00:06:22.240
Your response continues to encourage everyone involved in this work.
00:06:22.480 --> 00:06:32.319
Yeah, because last week forced us to ask whether the word of God truly has authority over what we believe and how we live.
00:06:32.639 --> 00:06:43.439
And today we turn to a subject that is so familiar that many Christians may assume they already know everything there is to say about it.
00:06:43.759 --> 00:06:44.959
The church.
00:08:29.680 --> 00:08:37.279
Because familiarity can cause us to overlook the value of something that we should consider precious.
00:08:37.600 --> 00:08:48.879
And perhaps before we decide what place the church should have in our lives, we need to see it again through the eyes of the one to whom it truly belongs.
00:08:49.120 --> 00:08:52.320
And that's where today's conversation will begin.
00:08:52.559 --> 00:08:57.360
Jonathan, can I ask you something that has puzzled me for quite a while before we get started?
00:08:57.600 --> 00:08:59.279
Sure, Cliff, what's on your heart?
00:08:59.519 --> 00:09:08.639
Have you ever noticed just how easy it is for people to say certain things about the church that they would never dream of even saying about Jesus?
00:09:09.200 --> 00:09:12.799
That's an interesting observation, but give me an example.
00:09:13.039 --> 00:09:18.639
Well, I've heard people say the church just isn't that important to me anymore.
00:09:18.799 --> 00:09:21.440
I I've heard them say I don't really need the church.
00:09:21.600 --> 00:09:24.960
I've heard them say the church is full of hypocrites.
00:09:25.360 --> 00:09:29.519
I love Jesus, I just don't care that much for the church.
00:09:29.840 --> 00:09:38.720
But Jonathan, I've never heard anyone comfortably say Jesus isn't that important to me anymore, or I love the church.
00:09:38.960 --> 00:09:40.960
I just don't need Jesus.
00:09:41.279 --> 00:09:44.720
Cliff, I don't think I've honestly ever looked at it that way.
00:09:44.879 --> 00:09:57.200
And I think the reason why, because somewhere along the way, many people have become comfortable separating two things that the New Testament never separates.
00:09:57.759 --> 00:09:59.679
What do you think that happened, Jonathan?
00:09:59.919 --> 00:10:03.440
Well, I've spent a lot of time in my life asking that question.
00:10:03.519 --> 00:10:19.039
And I have to wonder if one reason is because many of us have unintentionally reduced the church that to into something that we go to instead of someone who belongs to Christ.
00:10:19.279 --> 00:10:32.960
And once that begins to happen, the church becomes a service, a schedule, a building, an obligation instead of something infinitely precious to our Lord.
00:10:33.279 --> 00:10:42.799
So we're evaluating the church almost entirely from our own experiences with it, instead of asking how Christ views it.
00:10:43.120 --> 00:10:43.600
Exactly.
00:10:43.759 --> 00:10:49.200
And think about just for a moment how we normally describe a congregation.
00:10:49.360 --> 00:10:59.600
We'll make statements like, hey, I like the preaching there, or I love the song service, or man, they have a great youth program, or they've got activities for my kiddos.
00:10:59.919 --> 00:11:02.799
Now, those those certain things, they have a place.
00:11:03.759 --> 00:11:14.639
But I find it interesting, Cliff, that we often evaluate the church in the same way that people evaluate a restaurant or a gym membership.
00:11:14.799 --> 00:11:17.200
Like, what am I getting out of this?
00:11:17.440 --> 00:11:23.039
Jonathan, that's a little uncomfortable to hear because I I think there's some truth to it.
00:11:23.279 --> 00:11:23.759
There is.
00:11:23.919 --> 00:11:26.399
And here's what really challenged me.
00:11:26.879 --> 00:11:32.720
Jesus, when you study his word, he never spoke about his church in that way.
00:11:33.519 --> 00:11:34.159
Not once.
00:11:34.320 --> 00:11:36.720
He didn't speak about convenience.
00:11:37.039 --> 00:11:38.960
He didn't speak about preference.
00:11:39.120 --> 00:11:42.559
He didn't ask people, hey, did you find it entertaining?
00:11:42.720 --> 00:11:48.159
No, he spoke about it uh as something he would build.
00:11:48.480 --> 00:11:51.039
I will build my church, right?
00:11:51.279 --> 00:11:55.840
Something that he would purchase and something he deeply loved.
00:11:56.320 --> 00:12:01.279
Jonathan tells us the church was never intended to revolve around us.
00:12:01.600 --> 00:12:03.120
And that's exactly right.
00:12:03.440 --> 00:12:08.720
And I think that's where this conversation often begins to change.
00:12:09.039 --> 00:12:16.159
Because when I'm asking what can the church do for me, I'm starting with the wrong person.
00:12:16.480 --> 00:12:21.759
The better question is what is the church of Christ?
00:12:22.159 --> 00:12:29.600
Because until I understand what she means to him, I'll never appreciate what she should mean to me.
00:12:29.919 --> 00:12:36.639
Jonathan, I think that is one of the biggest differences between today's culture and the New Testament.
00:12:36.799 --> 00:12:42.799
People have become very comfortable saying my relationship with Jesus is personal.
00:12:43.200 --> 00:12:55.279
And that may be true in one sense, Cliff, because the reality is no one can believe for me, no one can obey for me, no one can be faithful for me.
00:12:55.600 --> 00:12:59.759
My relationship to Christ, yes, is deeply personal.
00:13:00.240 --> 00:13:06.720
But here's where we sometimes, I think, make a leap that the New Testament never truly makes.
00:13:07.120 --> 00:13:15.039
We assume that because faith is personal, that it was also intended to only be private.
00:13:15.679 --> 00:13:18.000
But those two are not the same thing, brother.
00:13:18.320 --> 00:13:22.159
Jonathan, that's a distinction I've never really thought about before.
00:13:22.480 --> 00:13:26.799
And neither had I, I think, for a very long time.
00:13:27.440 --> 00:13:31.200
And then one day it just kind of hit me like a load of bricks.
00:13:31.519 --> 00:13:39.919
Every illustration that God gives us about Christ and his people is relational.
00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:43.279
Think about it this way: Christ is the head, right?
00:13:43.679 --> 00:14:07.120
The church is his body, Christ is the shepherd, the church is his flock, Christ is the bridegroom, the church is his bride, Christ is the king, the church is his kingdom, the Holy Spirit keeps bringing Christ and his people together.
00:14:07.440 --> 00:14:11.919
Yet, Jonathan, we seem to keep trying to pull them apart.
00:14:12.159 --> 00:14:22.320
And if heaven continually tries to join those two together, well, maybe we ought to be very cautious before we start trying to separate them ourselves.
00:14:22.720 --> 00:14:36.320
I couldn't agree more because before we ever ask whether the church is relevant or necessary or even worth our time, Cliff, first we have to ask a much bigger question.
00:14:36.799 --> 00:14:43.120
That question, are we looking at the church through our experiences or through the eyes of Jesus Christ?
00:14:43.519 --> 00:14:50.000
Cliff, there is something that I've wanted to share here on the Scripture Matters podcast for quite some time.
00:14:50.960 --> 00:14:58.240
In many ways, I think what I'm about to share helped to shape the way I think about today's subject.
00:14:58.480 --> 00:15:08.399
When I was just a little boy, there was something that I wanted more than just about anything else in this entire world.
00:15:08.799 --> 00:15:12.960
I wanted my dad to come with me to worship.
00:15:13.360 --> 00:15:16.799
And like little, most little boys, I loved my father.
00:15:17.039 --> 00:15:18.240
I looked up to him.
00:15:18.399 --> 00:15:27.679
And every Saturday, every Sunday, I hoped that my dad would get in that car and ride with me and my mama to church.
00:15:27.840 --> 00:15:35.440
And so every Saturday or Sunday, I would I would take the courage to ask him, Dad, will you come to church with us?
00:15:36.320 --> 00:15:42.000
And more than once, his answer was something that I'll never forget.
00:15:42.639 --> 00:15:47.200
He said, I'm not going to go and worship with a bunch of hypocrites.
00:15:48.320 --> 00:15:52.879
Now I can hear him saying that even right now, so many years later.
00:15:52.960 --> 00:15:57.360
He's been gone for many years, but I still hear those words.
00:15:57.519 --> 00:16:01.200
And as a little boy, I really didn't know what to say to that.
00:16:01.360 --> 00:16:05.440
I had no idea how to truly answer him.
00:16:05.679 --> 00:16:11.519
I wasn't thinking about, let's say, church history or I wasn't thinking about theology.
00:16:11.759 --> 00:16:20.559
I wasn't thinking about really anything other than the fact that I just wanted my dad to get up and go with me to worship.
00:16:20.720 --> 00:16:28.080
I was hoping one day I would walk in that room and say those words, and my dad would say, Yeah, I'm gonna come.
00:16:28.480 --> 00:16:43.679
Now, looking back now as an adult, I understand that my father had been disappointed by people and he had seen things and heard things that hurt him deeply.
00:16:44.240 --> 00:16:57.360
He had formed convictions based on those personal experiences, and not for even a moment do I question the sincerity of those feelings.
00:16:57.679 --> 00:17:16.720
But I've often wondered how many people out there have repeated those same words without ever stopping to ask whether they're judging Christ's church by something that Christ never intended his church to be.
00:17:17.039 --> 00:17:26.799
Jonathan, in all reality, I really think about everyone listening knows someone who has said exactly what your father said.
00:17:27.119 --> 00:17:28.240
Yeah, I think so too.
00:17:28.400 --> 00:17:38.400
In fact, I would imagine there's possibly somebody watching this podcast today who may have said those words at some point themselves.
00:17:38.799 --> 00:17:42.880
And let's be honest, hypocrisy, folks, is real.
00:17:43.039 --> 00:17:45.440
The church has never denied that.
00:17:45.920 --> 00:17:48.640
No, Jesus certainly never denied it.
00:17:48.799 --> 00:18:01.279
Uh, in fact, some of his strongest words in his ministry were directed towards people whose religion had become nothing more than just outward performance.
00:18:01.519 --> 00:18:07.519
So pretending that hypocrisy doesn't exist, that's just not the answer.
00:18:07.759 --> 00:18:11.200
But here's what I've always found interesting, Jonathan.
00:18:11.359 --> 00:18:20.480
When someone says, I'm not going because they are hypocrites there, they usually don't apply that reasoning anywhere else in their lives.
00:18:20.720 --> 00:18:21.279
No, that's true.
00:18:21.359 --> 00:18:22.000
You think about it.
00:18:22.079 --> 00:18:26.240
People don't stop going to the grocery store just because there's bad people in the building.
00:18:26.559 --> 00:18:34.400
People don't stop going to the doctor just because they had a less than than great experience with a doctor uh along the way.
00:18:34.960 --> 00:18:54.799
Um, we don't abandon our jobs just because people that we've worked beside could be a hypocrite, but somehow, somehow, because flawed people um uh come into the church, folks, it does not automatically invalidate the purpose of the church or those other places.
00:18:55.039 --> 00:18:58.640
Yeah, that's is when it comes to the church.
00:18:58.880 --> 00:19:00.799
Many people make that leap.
00:19:01.039 --> 00:19:11.039
And I think part of the reason that is so is because we're expecting the church to be something that Christ never claimed it to be.
00:19:11.359 --> 00:19:17.680
Jesus never once promised you a congregation filled with perfect people.
00:19:18.559 --> 00:19:29.359
No, he promised people who are being transformed and then in various stages of transformation, and there's a tremendous difference.
00:19:29.680 --> 00:19:41.359
That's an important distinction, too, Jonathan, because the church isn't a museum displaying perfect Christians, it's a place where sinners are learning to become more like Christ.
00:19:41.599 --> 00:19:56.079
No, you're right, and every congregation is going to have immature Christians, every congregation has people who struggle, every congregation has people who from time to time are going to disappoint one another.
00:19:56.240 --> 00:20:01.039
Not because Christ failed, but because his people are still growing.
00:20:01.279 --> 00:20:11.359
And Jonathan, if perfection becomes a standard by which we choose whether to belong to Christ's church, none of us could honestly stay.
00:20:11.599 --> 00:20:19.279
No, and the irony is, brother, every one of us at some point in time has needed patience.
00:20:19.599 --> 00:20:22.480
Every one of us at some point has needed grace.
00:20:22.640 --> 00:20:28.960
Every one of us has needed forgiveness, including me, and I would imagine, including yourself.
00:20:29.200 --> 00:20:38.000
The church, let's think about it this way, has never been a gathering of people who never needed Christ's mercy any longer.
00:20:38.079 --> 00:20:41.839
No, it's a gathering of people who know they always do.
00:20:42.480 --> 00:20:48.000
Jonathan, I've been thinking about the wedding scene that opened today's episode.
00:20:48.319 --> 00:20:52.960
And I have to tell you, something about it bothers me like a festered bunk.
00:20:53.200 --> 00:20:54.319
Uh uh oh, brother.
00:20:54.559 --> 00:20:55.519
What's that?
00:20:56.319 --> 00:21:03.440
Jonathan, your bride, Jennifer, she's so precious to you, just as my bride, Edwina, is precious to me.
00:21:03.680 --> 00:21:14.400
Now, imagine someone walking into my house, looking at me square in the eye, and saying, Cliff, I'm taking your place in that marriage.
00:21:14.640 --> 00:21:22.000
From this point forward, I will be the one determining what that relationship looks like and how it operates.
00:21:22.400 --> 00:21:28.000
Man, you're making me sweat because I don't imagine that conversation would be a very peaceful conversation.
00:21:28.319 --> 00:21:28.960
Not at all.
00:21:29.119 --> 00:21:29.759
No, sir.
00:21:29.920 --> 00:21:38.160
And I know you would feel the same way if someone attempted to take your place in the covenant relationship you shared with Jennifer too.
00:21:38.319 --> 00:21:38.880
Absolutely.
00:21:39.119 --> 00:21:54.880
Neither of us owns our wife, Jonathan, but we would immediately recognize that person as introducing us into some type of a relationship and claiming an authority that folks that he just does not have.
00:21:55.519 --> 00:22:13.039
And yet, think about it this way when it comes to the bride of Christ, he His church, does it not seem weird that human beings have acted as though the church were theirs to claim and rename and reorganize and redirect?
00:22:13.279 --> 00:22:14.079
Yes, sir.
00:22:14.240 --> 00:22:16.559
And that's what troubles me, Jonathan.
00:22:16.720 --> 00:22:37.359
Scripture says the church belongs to Jesus, but history is filled with people placing their own names upon it, establishing earthly headquarters over it, or evaluating human counsels and religious leaders into positions of authority that Christ never gave to them.
00:22:37.680 --> 00:22:44.400
Which I think raises a question that gets to the very heart of our conversation here today.
00:22:44.720 --> 00:22:48.000
Who does the church ultimately belong to?
00:22:48.240 --> 00:22:50.319
To man or to Christ?
00:22:50.640 --> 00:22:51.839
Exactly, Jonathan.
00:22:52.000 --> 00:22:57.680
And the scripture does not leave that question unanswered in Acts 20, verse 28.
00:22:57.839 --> 00:23:00.480
Paul told the elders to care for what?
00:23:00.720 --> 00:23:05.200
The church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.
00:23:05.440 --> 00:23:08.960
Now think about the weight of that statement for a second, Jonathan.
00:23:09.200 --> 00:23:12.720
The church was purchased with the blood of Jesus Christ.
00:23:12.960 --> 00:23:22.799
And you and I both know that when someone pays the price for something, the person who made the purchase holds the rightful claim to it.
00:23:23.119 --> 00:23:24.160
Absolutely.
00:23:24.400 --> 00:23:26.319
We did not purchase the church.
00:23:26.559 --> 00:23:28.559
No preacher purchased the church.
00:23:28.799 --> 00:23:30.799
No council purchased the church.
00:23:31.039 --> 00:23:33.680
No religious movement purchased the church.
00:23:33.920 --> 00:23:36.240
Christ purchased that church, Jonathan.
00:23:36.559 --> 00:23:41.440
Which means we uh, folks, we're not owners of the church.
00:23:41.599 --> 00:23:46.160
Not in any way, not in any fashion, and not in any form.
00:23:46.640 --> 00:23:52.799
We are servants within the church that Christ purchased with his own blood.
00:23:53.039 --> 00:23:57.759
And Christ did not merely purchase the church and then stepped away from it.
00:23:58.319 --> 00:24:04.559
Colossians chapter 1, verse 18 says, He is the head of the body, the church.
00:24:05.039 --> 00:24:09.599
And that that ought to settle for everybody out there the question of authority.
00:24:09.920 --> 00:24:14.799
A body does not have several, let's say, competing heads.
00:24:14.960 --> 00:24:19.839
No, Christ alone is the head of the church.
00:24:20.160 --> 00:24:35.119
So when questions arise concerning doctrine, worship, morality, leadership, or the mission of the church, our first question cannot be, what does the culture prefer?
00:24:35.519 --> 00:24:36.880
Or what about this one?
00:24:37.039 --> 00:24:39.279
What will attract the largest crowd?
00:24:39.599 --> 00:24:42.640
Or even what have people traditionally done?
00:24:42.880 --> 00:24:50.799
No, the question must be: what has Christ, the head, revealed through his word?
00:24:51.279 --> 00:24:54.559
Because ownership carries authority.
00:24:54.880 --> 00:24:57.200
Well, folks, I've got to share this with you.
00:24:57.279 --> 00:25:07.119
Of all the episodes that we've done here with the Scripture Matters podcast, this one has the potential to be the most personal.
00:25:07.440 --> 00:25:13.119
Because some of you watching this episode right now, or you're listening to this, you've been hurt.
00:25:13.279 --> 00:25:15.920
You've been hurt by people in a congregation.
00:25:16.160 --> 00:25:24.960
You've witnessed hypocrisy, you've endured conflict, you've trusted somebody within a church who failed you.
00:25:25.279 --> 00:25:35.039
And that disappointment can become so painful that you begin to associate that failure with the church itself.
00:25:35.680 --> 00:25:43.359
Please know that neither I nor Cliff would ever minimize your pain.
00:25:43.680 --> 00:25:48.640
Nor would we ever act as if your experiences don't matter.
00:25:49.279 --> 00:26:06.720
All I'm asking today, please do not allow the failures of imperfect people to become the final word concerning something that Jesus still loves, still leads, and still calls his own.
00:26:07.119 --> 00:26:12.880
The church does not matter because every Christian always represents Christ perfectly.
00:26:13.119 --> 00:26:21.519
No, the church matters because Christ remains perfect even when his people are far from it.
00:26:22.480 --> 00:26:28.000
We are truly imperfect people inside a perfect church.
00:26:28.240 --> 00:26:36.240
And for those of us who have been part of the church for most of our lives, perhaps our danger is a little different.
00:26:36.559 --> 00:26:43.519
The fact is, the church can become so familiar to us that we stop seeing its beauty.
00:26:43.759 --> 00:26:50.160
It can become like an old piece of furniture hidden beneath layers and layers of varnish.
00:26:50.960 --> 00:27:05.039
Human traditions, personal preferences, pride, personalities, conflicts, and disappointments can accumulate until what Christ intended becomes difficult to recognize.
00:27:05.440 --> 00:27:09.119
But the answer is not to discard what belongs to Christ.
00:27:09.680 --> 00:27:34.799
The answer is to strip away every layer of that ugliness that we as human beings have added and rediscover the church as scripture reveals her, purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ, led by Jesus as her only head, and called to display his wisdom and his glory before the world.
00:27:35.039 --> 00:27:37.519
Folks, that's beautiful.
00:27:37.839 --> 00:27:51.359
As much as I might wish I could, I cannot go back and stand behind that skinny little red-headed boy who kept asking his father to come worship beside him and mommy.
00:27:52.160 --> 00:27:56.400
I cannot give him the words that he didn't know how to say.
00:27:56.799 --> 00:28:10.160
But if I could, good folks, I think I would tell him that day, I think I would tell my father, Dad, you are right that hypocrites can be found among religious people.
00:28:10.720 --> 00:28:14.240
Jesus warned us about them too.
00:28:14.720 --> 00:28:23.200
But please do not judge the perfect Christ solely by people who sometimes fail to look like him.
00:28:23.920 --> 00:28:35.920
Do not allow another person's inconsistency to keep you from the Savior who loved his church enough to purchase her with his own blood.
00:28:36.400 --> 00:28:43.599
And perhaps someone out there watching this today, maybe you need to hear those same words.
00:28:44.400 --> 00:28:54.880
Do not allow disappointments with people to become separation from Christ and the people who belong to him.
00:28:55.920 --> 00:29:04.000
Jonathan, when everything we have discussed today is brought together, the conclusion is really very clear.
00:29:05.680 --> 00:29:06.559
Yes, sir.
00:29:07.119 --> 00:29:11.839
The church matters because she matters to Jesus.
00:29:12.319 --> 00:29:18.799
She's not ours to claim, rename, or reinvent according to human preferences.
00:29:19.119 --> 00:29:29.200
No, she belongs to the one who promised to build her, purchased her with his own blood, and reigns today as her only head.
00:29:29.519 --> 00:29:37.599
And recognizing his ownership should affect far more than just the name displayed outside the building.
00:29:37.839 --> 00:29:52.319
No, it should govern the doctrine taught inside it, the worship offered within it, the mission pursued through it, and the lives of every Christian who claims to belong to him.
00:29:53.039 --> 00:30:11.680
So the question every congregation must ask is not merely does the name of Christ appears on our building, but also can the authority, character, and teachings of Christ be seen in the people who gather inside it?
00:30:12.000 --> 00:30:19.839
Because the church bears his name, and the church must always reflect his glory.
00:30:20.480 --> 00:30:27.200
Well, with that, sadly, friends, we are out of time for today's episode of Scripture Matters podcast.
00:30:27.440 --> 00:30:33.839
But the good news is season two, well, it's just getting warmed up, isn't it, Jonathan?
00:30:34.079 --> 00:30:34.960
That's right, Cliff.
00:30:35.039 --> 00:30:46.640
And next Friday we turn our attention to something every Christian practices, hopefully, but perhaps not every Christian fully understands.
00:30:47.039 --> 00:30:51.920
What is prayer accomplishing when we cannot see anything changing?
00:30:52.559 --> 00:30:56.880
Why do some prayers appear to be remaining unanswered?
00:30:57.119 --> 00:31:01.839
And how should we pray, shaping our relationship with God?
00:31:02.319 --> 00:31:07.599
Next week's conversation, good folks, will be called Prayer Matters.
00:31:07.920 --> 00:31:11.839
So until next time, my name is Jonathan Sanford.
00:31:12.000 --> 00:31:13.440
And I'm Cliff Thompson.
00:31:13.599 --> 00:31:19.200
Reminding every one of you out there, as always, to stay focused and stay grounded.
00:31:19.440 --> 00:31:23.759
And remember, good folks, Scripture Matters.
00:31:24.000 --> 00:31:25.200
Goodbye, everybody.
00:31:25.440 --> 00:31:29.839
Thanks for spending part of your day with us on the Scripture Matters Podcast.
00:31:30.000 --> 00:31:34.079
We'll be back with a new conversation every Friday at 3.30 p.m.
00:31:34.400 --> 00:31:38.400
on YouTube, Facebook, and all major podcast platforms.
00:31:39.119 --> 00:31:42.480
Until then, may the word guide you and your week.
00:31:42.559 --> 00:31:46.400
And as always, remember Scripture Matters.
