ÜBER DIESE EPISODE
Continuing their multi-week series on Core Values in Parenting, Pastors Stan and Cynthia Shelby evaluate the second non-negotiable character pillar required for raising kingdom-minded children: Respect.
Reuniting on Restoring the Family’s Radio Ministry, the Shelbys draw on their 50-plus combined years as public school educators and administrators—Pastor Stan with 33 years in elementary classrooms and Cynthia with over 25 years spanning middle school, high school, and elementary leadership.
Responding to what they view as a widespread cultural decline in basic manners, empathy, and honor, the Shelbys dismantle the secular misconception that children should dictate household standards. Instead, they examine how teaching respect at home equips children with active listening skills, emotional resilience, and a solid moral compass for life.
Why Respect Must Be Taught at HomePastors Stan and Cynthia address the frontline reality of modern classrooms:
=== THE ARCHITECTURE OF HOUSEHOLD RESPECT ===
PARENTAL MODELING & DOMESTIC STANDARDS ──┐
├──► RESPECTFUL, EMPATHETIC CHILD
ACTIVE LISTENING & BOUNDARY AUDITS ──┘
When parents fail to teach respect, educators are forced to step into the gap—teaching basic manners and self-regulation before academic instruction can even occur.
=== CULTURAL DRIFT vs. TRAINED RESPECT ===
CULTURAL DRIFT / EGO-CENTRIC DEFAULT TRAINED KINGDOM RESPECT
==================================== =======================
• Interrupts & Demands Immediate Attention • Listens Actively & Waits Turn
• Views Others as Audience for Self • Recognizes Valid Needs in Others
• Loud, Defensive Reaction to Friction • Disagrees Politely Without Insults
• Resists Authority & Ignores Rules • Honors Elders, Teachers, & Leaders
4 Core Benefits of Training Children in RespectThe Classroom Behavior Realignment: *”Whenever people ask what subject I teach in public school, I laugh and tell them, ‘I mainly teach behavior and manners,'” * Pastor Stan shares. “It sounds like a joke, but any veteran educator sees the shift over the last few decades. Respect isn’t an instinct children pick up from social media—it is a core value that must be explicitly taught and modeled at home.”

Respect shifts a child’s focus away from self-centered demands toward recognizing that others have valid feelings, thoughts, and boundaries.
2. Improving Communication and Active ListeningRespectful children learn to pay attention, wait their turn to speak, and value what peers and authority figures share.
3. Fostering Trust and TeamworkCynthia on the “Only Child” Classroom Adjustment: “In a classroom of 25-plus students, children who are used to unlimited adult attention at home must learn what is fair,” Cynthia explains. “It is not fair to demand that a teacher or parent drop everything instantly for one child’s story. We have to teach children patience and active listening—learning that waiting your turn is an act of respect.”
Mutual respect creates safe spaces within families and peer groups, enabling children to resolve conflicts calmly without yelling, name-calling, or losing self-control.
4. Cultivating Self-Respect and IntegrityWhen children are taught to respect others, they internalize their own God-given worth. Respect becomes an internal moral compass guiding them to make wise, honorable choices even when no adults are watching.
4 Scriptural Models of Youth, Honor, and ReadinessScripture provides clear, unshakeable narratives illustrating how young people walk in respect and divine favor:
1.1. Young Jesus in the Temple:Luke 2:41–52.
At twelve years old, Jesus traveled to Jerusalem with Mary and Joseph. After being found in the temple asking questions of the elders, He willingly returned home and remained subject and obedient to His earthly parents, growing in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and man.
2.2. King Josiah’s Early Obedience:2 Chronicles 34:1–2.
Josiah became King of Judah at just eight years old. Despite his extreme youth, he chose to respect God’s commandments, walking uprightly without turning to the right or the left.
3.3. Samuel’s Instant Readiness:1 Samuel 3:1–10.
When God called young Samuel during the night, Samuel initially thought it was the priest Eli. He repeatedly ran to Eli with immediate readiness and respect, ultimately responding to God’s voice with, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”
4.4. Timothy Setting an Example:1 Timothy 4:12.
Paul encouraged young Timothy not to let anyone look down on his youth, but to set the absolute standard for believers in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.
Scripture explicitly ties a child’s respect for parental authority to personal protection and longevity:
Ephesians 6:1–3: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise—’so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’”
Colossians 3:20: “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.”
Practical Application for the Home TodayLeviticus 19:3: “Each of you must respect your mother and father…”
Transforming your home into a culture of respect requires direct parental modeling:
-
Model Respect in Your Tone: Let your children see you speak politely to service workers, elders, and spouse. Say “Yes, ma’am,” “No, sir,” and “Thank you” consistently.
-
Stop Letting Children Set the Household Climate: Do not let a child’s mood or outbursts dictate family standards. You are the adult; set the moral baseline with firm, loving authority.
-
Have Uncomfortable, Loving Conversations: When your child acts disrespectfully toward a teacher, peer, or parent, address it immediately. Speak the truth in love, enforce consequences, and teach them how to apologize and restore honor.
Respect is not an optional social suggestion—it is a biblical command that establishes personal safety, emotional maturity, and divine favor over your children’s lives.
Evaluate your domestic climate today. Model respectful speech, teach your children active listening, align your words with God’s Word, and walk in the fullness of your assignment!
