Deep Dive into The Nature, Power, Deceit, and Prevalency of the Remainders of Indwelling Sin in Believers Together with the Ways of Its Working and Means of Prevention, Opened, Evinced, and Applied with a Resolution of Sundry Cases of Conscience thereunto Appertaining by John Owen - Nature of Sin Farther Discovered as It Is Enmity against God - Its Aversation from All Good Opened - Means to Prevent the Effects of It Prescribed
Indwelling sin manifests primarily as aversation, a deep-seated resistance and loathing within human nature toward spiritual communion with God. This internal enmity causes the mind and affections to wander or grow weary during both private and public devotional duties. Believers must actively combat this spiritual inertia by maintaining a universally holy framework, addressing the earliest promptings of sin, and refusing to surrender to fatigue in their religious practices. Furthermore, cultivating a humble awareness of this inherent shortcoming, coupled with a deep appreciation for the beauty of spiritual devotion, weakens the hold of internal corruption. Ultimately, persevering through these internal struggles through constant vigilance ensures spiritual victory and prevents the gradual decline into complete apostasy.
