EP-60 Root Canal

WEBVTT
00:00.267 --> 00:12.623
[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the Psychobetical Podcast.
00:13.160 --> 00:19.072
[SPEAKER_00]: speed a long time, I know, it's been a year or something.
00:19.092 --> 00:26.025
[SPEAKER_00]: It's good to get your listeners up, this is probably not doing any podcasts.
00:26.587 --> 00:34.442
[SPEAKER_00]: So hello, yes, it's me, I'm still alive and to get Patrick and I basically
00:34.422 --> 00:38.070
[SPEAKER_00]: I've just run, I've run upstairs, it's just like I've cut to do it.
00:38.150 --> 00:48.472
[SPEAKER_00]: I've been trying to do this podcast for a very very long time and every time I start doing it like something There's like a child outside or there's some some shit going on stuff.
00:48.492 --> 00:52.060
[SPEAKER_00]: I just thought there's a buzzing or something so I keep
00:52.040 --> 01:07.416
[SPEAKER_00]: I keep starting it and then not doing it and I'm doing that for a very long time so I do apologize I've been getting like every now and again like a random email from someone saying like please do the podcast or something like
01:07.852 --> 01:11.756
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so anyway, so I've got nothing to talk about.
01:11.796 --> 01:15.720
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the only problem like my life is my life is a boring.
01:16.201 --> 01:19.084
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not that wrong with a boring life, that.
01:19.525 --> 01:21.066
[SPEAKER_00]: And your life's a probably boring as well.
01:21.246 --> 01:23.869
[SPEAKER_00]: That's why you listen to this podcast.
01:23.889 --> 01:32.959
[SPEAKER_00]: Like if you're like, if you're, if you're living up in Las Vegas with lots of prostitutes and, you know, Matthew hit men and stuff, you probably not listening to podcasts.
01:33.680 --> 01:34.821
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe you are.
01:34.801 --> 01:45.340
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so when I thought what I would do, I would just quickly, I need to go somewhere, I need to go out again.
01:45.360 --> 01:53.053
[SPEAKER_00]: I already started, I've been away from podcasting, and I'm already saying, like, I can't talk, I'm going in a minute.
01:53.073 --> 01:54.075
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going in a minute.
01:54.055 --> 02:06.008
[SPEAKER_00]: So I thought I'd like answer a few questions because that was a good way of doing these things and trying to find out the questions.
02:06.028 --> 02:10.039
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just like scrolling down trying to find them.
02:10.019 --> 02:15.564
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so I'm just going to answer a couple of, I'll just have to, I'll just have to make them up, I'll make them questions up.
02:15.964 --> 02:19.167
[SPEAKER_00]: The right, they are real questions, what I should get, I think, what I can't really find in them.
02:19.528 --> 02:25.513
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so I guess I should do some waffle before I start just out of tradition.
02:26.394 --> 02:27.475
[SPEAKER_00]: Where am I going?
02:27.655 --> 02:36.043
[SPEAKER_00]: I am the main, the main, because it's a new year, happy new year, happy Christmas.
02:36.323 --> 02:37.825
[SPEAKER_00]: I hate where people say happy new year, don't you?
02:37.845 --> 02:38.305
[SPEAKER_00]: Like,
02:38.285 --> 02:41.592
[SPEAKER_00]: Happy New Year's, like, and Happy New Year!
02:41.612 --> 02:42.674
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever.
02:43.015 --> 02:49.849
[SPEAKER_00]: Happy, I don't know why, I think it's like, when he's working a shop, he's to hit him, people always say, like, you know, how are you?
02:49.909 --> 02:51.973
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like, how are you, how are you?
02:52.334 --> 02:55.500
[SPEAKER_00]: And I would never answer, and then I thought that I was like, good, good.
02:55.480 --> 02:58.604
[SPEAKER_00]: As in, they thought, you know, they just thought I'd said, how are you?
02:58.624 --> 03:00.487
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't say anything.
03:00.527 --> 03:05.153
[SPEAKER_00]: So, as well as that with New Year, it's always a bit like, so how would you increase this?
03:05.473 --> 03:06.354
[SPEAKER_00]: How would you increase this?
03:06.615 --> 03:07.816
[SPEAKER_00]: How would you New Year?
03:07.836 --> 03:10.199
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, are those pretty cares?
03:10.800 --> 03:12.262
[SPEAKER_00]: So, how was my New Year?
03:12.282 --> 03:18.450
[SPEAKER_00]: I think it went to bed, like, usually I've ever, I don't like, like, enforced happiness.
03:18.430 --> 03:29.848
[SPEAKER_00]: or in force like jolety, you know, like you've got time a good time and if you don't have a good time you're gonna have a shit time because you're gonna be thinking, I should be having a good time and I'm not having a shit time and I'll make it even more shit.
03:30.870 --> 03:33.514
[SPEAKER_00]: So I just have a shit time and then I'm like, I'm happy.
03:33.815 --> 03:34.436
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I am for.
03:34.456 --> 03:44.472
[SPEAKER_00]: I usually watch Harry Potter, usually watch Harry Potter then go to bed about half past ten or something and then all the
03:44.452 --> 03:46.414
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, the fuck are they bloody fireworks going off?
03:46.835 --> 03:58.648
[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so I went somewhere, I went to Whickler, County of Whickler, where there was no fireworks, so that was good, so I could go to bed, happen, then there was no, there was no noise, so that was good.
03:59.169 --> 04:07.118
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, Harry Potter, but my wife had watched Harry Potter recently, so we didn't watch that, I don't even watch anything, she went into bed.
04:07.098 --> 04:09.743
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I don't like New Year.
04:09.943 --> 04:18.538
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like Christmas isn't Christmas is okay if you got kids If you're not, you might just like blow your brains out of something.
04:19.519 --> 04:24.568
[SPEAKER_00]: I'll go to Las Vegas with some prostitutes So yeah, so yeah, what to do?
04:24.588 --> 04:25.490
[SPEAKER_00]: How else did I do?
04:25.610 --> 04:27.553
[SPEAKER_00]: I was really I've been really ill
04:27.533 --> 04:30.279
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like saying that because people think you're dying.
04:30.299 --> 04:31.281
[SPEAKER_00]: I got cancerisms.
04:31.982 --> 04:32.884
[SPEAKER_00]: I just had the flu.
04:33.305 --> 04:38.556
[SPEAKER_00]: I actually had like a... this is a bit of advice.
04:38.596 --> 04:43.045
[SPEAKER_00]: You know that felt that song sunscreen, where it says, always floss.
04:43.025 --> 04:48.833
[SPEAKER_00]: like I completely agree with that statement as all and also include and clean your teeth at the same time.
04:49.254 --> 04:57.625
[SPEAKER_00]: Because I think I think being a British person, like my brother's married to a Canadian in sure he says that all British people look like Austin Powers.
04:58.086 --> 04:59.268
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's probably true.
04:59.288 --> 05:08.561
[SPEAKER_00]: If you look at pictures of like Kenton Cool and Chris Bonnington, like I guess Mount Rene is going to even wear, because I think I think Mount Rene is just a bit grubby.
05:08.801 --> 05:11.665
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't I bet triathlete some people I've like really
05:11.645 --> 05:15.716
[SPEAKER_00]: but they're a bit of amazing, like Irish people have good teeth.
05:15.877 --> 05:18.544
[SPEAKER_00]: I think mainly because they haven't more pulled out when they're young.
05:18.986 --> 05:20.831
[SPEAKER_00]: They've got the hook like plastic teeth.
05:20.851 --> 05:22.455
[SPEAKER_00]: Now that's what they used to do in the olden days apparently.
05:22.596 --> 05:24.100
[SPEAKER_00]: When you've got married, you've got the teeth pulled out.
05:24.541 --> 05:27.409
[SPEAKER_00]: So you're aware of bad and too husband, if you had bad teeth.
05:27.389 --> 05:40.430
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I think I went through long periods of my life where I probably didn't claim a teeth enough, or at all, and because it was a point, you know, and because my teeth are terrible anywhere.
05:41.852 --> 05:49.144
[SPEAKER_00]: So, yes, I didn't claim a teeth enough, and then recently, because I'm in Ireland, I went to the went to the dentist.
05:49.192 --> 05:49.793
[SPEAKER_00]: I'd been there.
05:49.853 --> 05:54.719
[SPEAKER_00]: I'd been within within seven years I'd been before, so I wasn't that bad.
05:55.080 --> 06:06.034
[SPEAKER_00]: So I went in, and the dentist was like, you know, snarced the screens, and God five, and all these lights that I'd flashing, and to you, so I kind of see any teeth in there.
06:06.054 --> 06:11.561
[SPEAKER_00]: And so yeah, so he was like, oh, you need to go and see the, I've never only promised him a teeth that.
06:12.803 --> 06:16.988
[SPEAKER_00]: So I had to go and had like four sessions with the, with the,
06:16.968 --> 06:23.979
[SPEAKER_00]: What's a call it, the person who clean your teeth, the anywhere, not the dentist, like the less the less a dentist.
06:24.660 --> 06:32.712
[SPEAKER_00]: The author, the hygienist, and basically she was kind of like, got like a chisel and she was like chipping it, chiseling all the plaque off and all that kind of stuff.
06:33.193 --> 06:38.581
[SPEAKER_00]: But it's a bit like an old yacht, an old boat, often what keeps it all together is all rust.
06:38.601 --> 06:40.063
[SPEAKER_00]: If you get rid of the rust, there's nothing there.
06:40.864 --> 06:41.946
[SPEAKER_00]: So my teeth are real like that.
06:41.986 --> 06:44.730
[SPEAKER_00]: So once, once, she's got rid of all the plaque.
06:44.710 --> 06:46.432
[SPEAKER_00]: Then that's how many of those are problems with my teeth.
06:46.972 --> 06:51.757
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's a bit basically just clean your teeth and then you're after whatever any plaque.
06:51.797 --> 06:53.519
[SPEAKER_00]: And also get an electric tooth brush.
06:53.859 --> 06:58.964
[SPEAKER_00]: I know you want to listen to this if you're young because you want to listen to this kind of stuff but I'm a mum who had false teeth.
06:59.144 --> 07:02.187
[SPEAKER_00]: She had her, she knew she was neglected as a child.
07:02.607 --> 07:09.114
[SPEAKER_00]: She had false teeth and she hated it and she was always really embarrassed about having false teeth and you know, hit it.
07:09.754 --> 07:13.418
[SPEAKER_00]: The idea of anyone seeing with a false teeth was like how awful for her.
07:13.398 --> 07:22.754
[SPEAKER_00]: So, she tried to, you know, get it into us like clean your teeth, look after your teeth, but you just take no, you see, you know, ignores stuff that people like that, all people say.
07:23.074 --> 07:24.637
[SPEAKER_00]: And it was like, no, this, this as well.
07:25.118 --> 07:37.819
[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, so anyway, so once I had, once I had my teeth all sort of looked amazing, you know, looked amazing, nothing really looked amazing, looked like shit, but they were like, um, less plaque, they were like,
07:37.799 --> 07:47.216
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it looked like someone who like hit me in the face with a brick or something, I'd take it through all of the places, but at least they were like the look, the look, the look, you know, okay.
07:47.737 --> 07:52.866
[SPEAKER_00]: So, anyway, but then I started getting like two thicks all the time because of the plaque and all disappeared.
07:53.647 --> 08:00.499
[SPEAKER_00]: And so then I was like a lot of, then I was like, I'll have to have a fillings, like give me this filling and it was like,
08:00.479 --> 08:06.588
[SPEAKER_00]: Wait, for some reason it gone from like not being needing a feeling to be like, oh, you had to have a root canal because it's so bad.
08:06.608 --> 08:08.611
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, I didn't even have any warning.
08:08.671 --> 08:13.298
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, anyway, so give me this feeling and it was like, oh, that's, you know, you might have to have a root canal.
08:13.338 --> 08:14.680
[SPEAKER_00]: That's quite a deep feeling.
08:14.720 --> 08:18.505
[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be quite sore and sensitive for like, sounds like me.
08:18.485 --> 08:38.434
[SPEAKER_00]: and so it so I went away and not long afterwards I got the flow well-covid but we call it the flow these days I got the flow when it was like pretty pretty you know pretty bad I got that was how that was dyeing you know that kind of it's like this is not usually with the fluid I felt you're gonna dye
08:38.414 --> 08:49.577
[SPEAKER_00]: And it was so bad at one point my son came in and he climbed up the window and he sort of traverse on the outside of the window and came in like the other window, you know, and I think I didn't do anything about it.
08:49.797 --> 08:51.681
[SPEAKER_00]: I was just like led there thinking I was dying.
08:52.323 --> 08:57.874
[SPEAKER_00]: And then the kids were looking and he got the flow and he was he couldn't do that anymore, so he was led laid up.
08:57.854 --> 09:04.330
[SPEAKER_00]: And then anyway all the two kids have the flu and now they're the flu and then the second my wife started getting the flu.
09:04.751 --> 09:15.458
[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of had this miraculous recovery and for two days I was like missed the like, do you want some, you know, I'd want some more bennelin, do you want some, you know, a nightmare, so all that kind of stuff like a real proper.
09:15.438 --> 09:23.085
[SPEAKER_00]: caring person but then when she recovered then I kind of went to relapse and then I had some kind of and This is this is really boring.
09:23.105 --> 09:45.445
[SPEAKER_00]: We talking about my medical issues then I got like a sinus infection and horrendous two thick like to the point that I was gonna die and I was really it was it was it was like terrible so so yeah, so I had it I had like that was my
09:45.425 --> 09:50.429
[SPEAKER_00]: And my tooth is still, I don't have any dentists out there, I don't want any like second opinions.
09:51.010 --> 09:55.894
[SPEAKER_00]: But I ended up going back to the dentist and I was like, I think I'm dying.
09:56.615 --> 10:02.660
[SPEAKER_00]: And I can't tell if it was the flu, the COVID, the brain cancer or something.
10:03.200 --> 10:14.250
[SPEAKER_00]: But he gave me some penicillin and that got rid of everything apart from the pain, which is the problem because of everything else wasn't that bad.
10:14.230 --> 10:17.435
[SPEAKER_00]: So now, now I still got paid, but it's not all the time.
10:17.915 --> 10:24.004
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm hopefully that all the time will become none of the time rather than more of the time.
10:24.044 --> 10:31.955
[SPEAKER_00]: As, like, more of the time won't be very nice because every now and again, I get like the most intense pain.
10:32.295 --> 10:44.052
[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm always thinking, like, I don't even have a scene, the running, not the running man, marathon man, where Oliver, what's his name?
10:44.032 --> 10:49.137
[SPEAKER_00]: a lot of Olivier, where she's always like drilling holes into just an Hoffman's teeth.
10:49.558 --> 10:52.320
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm often thinking like, is that, is this as bad as that?
10:52.901 --> 10:56.625
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, but it feels as if this is as bad as that.
10:56.645 --> 11:00.669
[SPEAKER_00]: But it only lasts for like a few hours and it goes away.
11:01.210 --> 11:04.693
[SPEAKER_00]: No, he lasts for like 10-20 minutes and then he just kind of goes away.
11:04.773 --> 11:11.440
[SPEAKER_00]: And he's probably to do with, it's probably to do with drinking hot drinks or drinking cold drinks.
11:11.420 --> 11:17.528
[SPEAKER_00]: or having your mouth open and the air being more than 37 degrees.
11:18.490 --> 11:27.041
[SPEAKER_00]: So when that went in the sauna the other day and the two started hurting and then the outside and the two that had taken because it was like a lot of freezing so I can't really win really.
11:27.682 --> 11:35.993
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, being in the sauna, yeah I have, do you know I think the last time I did a podcast,
11:35.973 --> 11:59.854
[SPEAKER_00]: I was probably talking about like ripping my bicep and so my training life seemed to have seemed to get knocked on the head a bit with with that kind of thing so I've kind of not I didn't do much I've not done much much training for quite a long time so I just basically been focusing on getting really fat and uh
11:59.834 --> 12:16.020
[SPEAKER_00]: I made this mistake, I started thinking like, instead of doing training and eating whatever I want, I'm just going to stop training and I'm just going to do intermittent fasting as in, I'll just have one meal every there.
12:16.000 --> 12:17.302
[SPEAKER_00]: and it works really well.
12:17.683 --> 12:26.680
[SPEAKER_00]: And the only problem with it, more I've kept saying, you never keep this up, you always do in stupid shit like this, and it never works, why don't you just do properly?
12:27.100 --> 12:31.849
[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, yeah, yeah, and it worked amazingly well, you know, for about...
12:31.829 --> 12:48.117
[SPEAKER_00]: about a month and then I'll let you lost some way and she was like oh you're looking pretty good and but it won't last because you know what you like and just get even fat and I like kind of such a touch and talk like that she's got an Irish accent and um and uh and uh and it did last and uh
12:48.097 --> 12:53.123
[SPEAKER_00]: So then I wasn't training and I was just, it wasn't good.
12:53.664 --> 13:07.840
[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, so I decided, like, I needed to focus on the, I need to focus less on work because I wasn't focused on on the eye of some reason for the last year.
13:07.860 --> 13:10.223
[SPEAKER_00]: I think they do with having these kids.
13:10.203 --> 13:11.968
[SPEAKER_00]: is that my daughter is like waking up.
13:13.151 --> 13:15.898
[SPEAKER_00]: This is like three keeps what I fall off for.
13:15.918 --> 13:25.343
[SPEAKER_00]: So she's, she keeps waking up in the night and like, just like, I'm hungry and all that kind of stuff and I keep getting up and,
13:25.677 --> 13:29.583
[SPEAKER_00]: It has been a funny, that last year was like a funny, it wasn't very productive year.
13:30.124 --> 13:42.022
[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe that's why I've not really done a podcast, so I've not been, not really, I've not felt like I've had much to talk about, so I know right now I'm just like one of these people just like winges on about all the health health issues.
13:42.042 --> 13:45.507
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't actually have really health issues, but anyway, but it's a new year, it's a new year.
13:45.527 --> 13:49.313
[SPEAKER_00]: So I've started, I'm back, I'm back training again.
13:49.373 --> 13:50.655
[SPEAKER_00]: I've decided I'm just gonna,
13:50.635 --> 14:16.643
[SPEAKER_00]: The more being a little bit air like I'm never else are being ill for like a month and having a bad tubes It was like oh my god, this is what illness feels like this is what it feels like so I was like You know happy happy wife happy life forget that but it's like happy me happy life Happy health as well so know that kind of stuff So I was like I'm just gonna focus more on getting being healthy and feeling healthy and fit and being fit
14:16.623 --> 14:45.972
[SPEAKER_00]: rather than focusing on trying to work and not really getting anywhere with any kind of just fact I couldn't, I didn't publish any books last year so which is which for me like I like to try and publish a book every year like I have a book that I've like almost finished and I have like several books that I've almost started so I should have done a book but it never, I'm probably
14:45.952 --> 14:47.274
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just like, what did he do?
14:47.334 --> 14:48.956
[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't do any training.
14:48.996 --> 14:50.558
[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't go and climb anything.
14:50.618 --> 14:53.361
[SPEAKER_00]: You didn't do, you didn't publish anything.
14:53.401 --> 14:58.768
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, what if all, like, it's like, you know, it's like, pretty, pretty bad.
14:59.208 --> 15:08.500
[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, so I started training again, but bass, but all I'm really doing is I'm building up my bass and bass.
15:09.061 --> 15:11.724
[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm just, I'm just going on the treadmill.
15:12.184 --> 15:12.685
[SPEAKER_00]: I just,
15:12.665 --> 15:16.091
[SPEAKER_00]: and it's got a treadmill because of the gym near us.
15:16.111 --> 15:20.338
[SPEAKER_00]: I've got lots of stuff to do, weighty stuff, but I'm building up my base.
15:21.120 --> 15:27.771
[SPEAKER_00]: So I just go on the treadmill and I go up, um, I've got, and this is a very highly technical bit right this down.
15:27.751 --> 15:40.747
[SPEAKER_00]: So I got on the treadmill and I started 6.6 kilometers an hour and every 5 minutes I go up by by whether it is a degree on the incline.
15:41.267 --> 15:57.707
[SPEAKER_00]: So after an hour you're on 6-6 degree angle and then I have like 20 kilos I carry 20 kilos and I could go I could go running or I could do some of the
15:57.687 --> 16:10.030
[SPEAKER_00]: And I could go running or do something like that, but I think I don't know this, I can seem to be surrounded by people who are always winging and mourning about being injured other times.
16:11.133 --> 16:12.756
[SPEAKER_00]: I keep it keep it quiet.
16:14.339 --> 16:17.164
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so you're like hard work, kill tosses.
16:17.144 --> 16:24.573
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it's like an edge thing, but a lot of people always seem to be like, you know, I've done that's throwing you into somewhere and they're always winging on about it.
16:24.933 --> 16:37.808
[SPEAKER_00]: So I think maybe this this time in life, I'm just going to do this for a while and then I'm going to start doing some dead lifts and then start doing some other things and build up my build up my best.
16:37.888 --> 16:42.493
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think I've got my my secret secret intention
16:42.473 --> 16:48.261
[SPEAKER_00]: is probably to go back to Danali in the winter time like next next winter.
16:49.243 --> 16:52.487
[SPEAKER_00]: And I want to go this winter actually, but it's good job I don't because it would have been to be what I mean.
16:52.507 --> 16:53.569
[SPEAKER_00]: I want to be fit enough.
16:53.729 --> 16:59.437
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so I think that's kind of needed an objective to focus on.
17:00.098 --> 17:01.680
[SPEAKER_00]: And
17:01.660 --> 17:17.840
[SPEAKER_00]: It's often often the 50 you get though, the 50 you get, the more like Mike Tyson said something like, he didn't like to get really thick as any started going to box again and boxing probably wasn't very good for him as any dendop with like a long-term brain injury or something.
17:17.860 --> 17:25.930
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think maybe fitness is a bit like that, like the 50 you get, the more he started having all these like, oh, maybe I'll go on solo, the grandeur ass or something, I don't know.
17:25.910 --> 17:52.407
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's a bit, it's uh, it just needs you to make fit enough that you think you're shit So you don't want to do anything too dangerous, but um, but not so unfit that you're actually unhealthy So if you know, if you know what I mean, so yeah, and the only thing I've been doing that's been like all fun is I've been doing a lot of kayaking in the dark Just to do with children and work and stuff
17:52.387 --> 18:05.506
[SPEAKER_00]: Children on work and so go on the go on the Korob the Korob's like it's massive I think it's a biggest lake in Ireland and I go out on there in the dark basically I feel you really know me.
18:05.526 --> 18:14.178
[SPEAKER_00]: It's almost like turning up and it's like dark and getting my kayak off from a car And there's people going like what is it what the fuck are you doing and So yeah, so go out.
18:14.298 --> 18:17.162
[SPEAKER_00]: It's quite it's quite the training
18:17.142 --> 18:22.949
[SPEAKER_00]: It's quite a training actually because there's some bits of the lake, there are any lights at all.
18:23.911 --> 18:25.232
[SPEAKER_00]: So there's no light at all.
18:25.373 --> 18:30.139
[SPEAKER_00]: And I've been using like, yeah, but you have to use your GPS to sort of get around.
18:30.199 --> 18:35.746
[SPEAKER_00]: And there's a lot of rocks in the lake and it's also can get very rough, like a lot of people drown in the lake.
18:35.826 --> 18:36.687
[SPEAKER_00]: Because when you get
18:36.667 --> 18:52.785
[SPEAKER_00]: big wins, stormy weather, like the shape of the little loads of lakes, one connected to the other, so there's a lot of fetch, so the weather is quite big and, you know, bots, bots sink and people fall out of bots and stuff so.
18:52.765 --> 19:00.272
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, it's been quite interesting doing like navigating around the lake using a GPS, we have to be quite, you have to be quite kind of precise.
19:00.692 --> 19:04.456
[SPEAKER_00]: And I've got one of those Garmin SAA that's connected to you phone.
19:04.996 --> 19:18.048
[SPEAKER_00]: And little things that you notice when you're kayaking the rain, if you have your phone in like a waterproof thing, is that the rain or the splashes from the water lands on the screen and it just sort of disables it makes it crash.
19:18.648 --> 19:21.591
[SPEAKER_00]: So you can't really use your
19:21.571 --> 19:33.905
[SPEAKER_00]: And a Garmin SE is a very, very basic, the screen, it lasts for like days and days and days and days, the battery, but it's very, very basic, there's no, there's no map or anything.
19:34.526 --> 19:47.241
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so I did, I did have like a Garmin E-tracks, something, 30 X or something, but the, I'm not used for ages and the batteries had corroded inside and destroyed it.
19:47.221 --> 19:49.545
[SPEAKER_00]: as batteries seem to always do.
19:50.005 --> 20:09.135
[SPEAKER_00]: So which leaves me on to, I am the book, the project I'm finishing, struck, I may be present there, it's this book book of the Beyond, which is like a thousand tips type book, but it's just for mountaineering and adventure and survival, bushcraftie, all that kind of all that shit.
20:09.876 --> 20:14.663
[SPEAKER_00]: And one of the tips in that book is actually always use
20:14.643 --> 20:34.896
[SPEAKER_00]: Gioro Sal, stroke of the brands are available, lithium batteries, you know, disposable lithium batteries in all your technology stuff, because they don't really corrode over time, they probably do corrode, but they don't, they're not seem to corrode, so if you put them in your GPS or your radio, climbing radio,
20:34.876 --> 20:43.246
[SPEAKER_00]: and stuff and you're leaving for like, yeah, you're not going to come back and it's all like dissolved and destroyed your your gadgets and stuff.
20:43.347 --> 20:45.029
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, a little tip for you there.
20:45.049 --> 20:46.030
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so that's me good.
20:46.050 --> 20:53.279
[SPEAKER_00]: I went, I did a few nights when I went out and it was, uh, and it was like so foggy on the lake.
20:53.319 --> 20:55.362
[SPEAKER_00]: I couldn't really really see the front of my kayak.
20:55.882 --> 20:57.384
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's kind of kind of cool.
20:57.404 --> 21:04.613
[SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of cool to me to be able to go not very far from your house
21:04.593 --> 21:22.311
[SPEAKER_00]: like one of those like micro adventures that people talk about have a very little tiny thing where you're out on the out in the dark or by yourself and it feels like adventurous and you come back and you're all a bit tired and stuff and feel like you've done something when you go home.
21:22.732 --> 21:24.033
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's quite nice to do that.
21:24.053 --> 21:25.635
[SPEAKER_00]: It's quite hard to do where we live.
21:26.196 --> 21:31.461
[SPEAKER_00]: It's mainly like water around here so it's hard to do anything but that sort.
21:31.441 --> 21:38.456
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so yeah, so let's have some of these questions, which I'm now going to do from memory.
21:38.877 --> 21:43.466
[SPEAKER_00]: I have one here, so I'll have to offer my email again, so I have to turn it off, so it won't beep.
21:45.350 --> 21:50.361
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just doing someone's blogging website, like I did someone to see what we're listening to.
21:50.341 --> 21:59.896
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, like, years and years ago, I went through affairs of like being wanting to do like doing websites with people for some reason.
21:59.936 --> 22:02.180
[SPEAKER_00]: I think I was just, I just found it kind of interesting.
22:02.821 --> 22:07.789
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I did want for a friend of mine, but we must have been like 10 years ago.
22:08.270 --> 22:12.737
[SPEAKER_00]: But like, you know, you did it for free to begin with, but it just ends up being like,
22:12.717 --> 22:15.523
[SPEAKER_00]: It's always like, can you do this, can you do that?
22:15.563 --> 22:19.752
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's always like, I'm a kind of busy, but I'll do that.
22:19.772 --> 22:21.937
[SPEAKER_00]: So that was that person, he was sending an email.
22:21.957 --> 22:23.901
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm, so never do anything good.
22:23.921 --> 22:25.344
[SPEAKER_00]: Never do anything free for anybody.
22:25.745 --> 22:26.847
[SPEAKER_00]: Just charge the money.
22:27.829 --> 22:29.713
[SPEAKER_00]: I really get to do so many else to do it.
22:29.693 --> 22:31.516
[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, this is a question.
22:31.877 --> 22:33.199
[SPEAKER_00]: So we go high Andy.
22:33.720 --> 22:41.533
[SPEAKER_00]: You've mentioned a few times in your books and articles that you're a fan of 30 centimeter open sling draws.
22:41.693 --> 22:43.216
[SPEAKER_00]: That's quick draw to you and me.
22:43.236 --> 22:55.617
[SPEAKER_00]: Actually funny, a funny story about draws is when I climbed the nose in the winter with Vanessa, my future wife to be and my future ex-wife to be,
22:55.597 --> 23:11.663
[SPEAKER_00]: and shenered my future wife to be, and Kean, who will see what happens with him, when we were coming down, so we were on the nose for like 10 days, because none of them had ever done a big wall before.
23:12.104 --> 23:15.850
[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, Kean had only ever climbed like one multi-pitch route in his life.
23:15.830 --> 23:17.291
[SPEAKER_00]: And he was shit as well.
23:17.572 --> 23:42.175
[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so I think after 10 days we eventually got to the top of the nurse because they were like doing I wasn't leading anything I was I was getting them to do everything themselves and like, you know, learning by doing But anyway when we got to the top as we were walking down the trail suddenly these like two speed climbers like caught us up and One of them said said to shed a shed or I think we've got your draws
23:42.155 --> 23:49.062
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, the shenid is a very, very smart person, but she can sometimes come across as very stupid.
23:49.762 --> 23:56.929
[SPEAKER_00]: And she said, she thought he meant her knickers, because draws mean knickers, not they.
23:57.550 --> 23:59.532
[SPEAKER_00]: And she was like, what are you talking about?
23:59.612 --> 24:04.536
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, yeah, we think we've got your draws and she was like, oh my god, if you're looking all embarrassed and stuff.
24:04.977 --> 24:10.322
[SPEAKER_00]: And then when they pulled out the quick draw, how we laughed, anyway, and she still doesn't understand.
24:10.302 --> 24:27.180
[SPEAKER_00]: now so yeah so yeah quick draws and because everything seems to have some disadvantages and how do you rack them because everything seems to have some disadvantages
24:27.160 --> 24:32.949
[SPEAKER_00]: A few of the options I've considered just let them dangle quite long and a snag hazard.
24:33.530 --> 24:37.256
[SPEAKER_00]: Triple the slings like alpine draws, or extremely short on bulky.
24:37.677 --> 24:41.282
[SPEAKER_00]: I've shortened in short and mud.
24:41.783 --> 24:44.448
[SPEAKER_00]: Double the sling, so a 15cm sling.
24:44.888 --> 24:51.058
[SPEAKER_00]: But if I set it up wrong, there is a chance the sling completely getting off the carabino and extending.
24:51.038 --> 25:03.958
[SPEAKER_00]: clove hitching the rope, carabiner, so that one is fixed, like a normal quick draw, and then it is about 25 centimeters long, but right, but then, why not get a 25 centimeter quick draw?
25:04.338 --> 25:04.799
[SPEAKER_00]: Good point.
25:06.502 --> 25:11.509
[SPEAKER_00]: Secondly, in down, you show a locker draw with one locker and one snapper.
25:12.010 --> 25:17.198
[SPEAKER_00]: Why don't you put a locker on both sides of the dog barn, dog barn, that's another thing for quick draw?
25:17.178 --> 25:34.461
[SPEAKER_00]: and why on the rope side, because what I've read so far, most on clipping seems to happen on the gear bolt side instead of the rope side, Karabina, thanks for your posts and info you put on the internet, and until these questions, regards Rick, so Rick,
25:34.441 --> 25:49.535
[SPEAKER_00]: So when, so use usually when, so like everybody's different, so this is not the where, this is not the where to do it, this is not, this is just one where to do it.
25:50.076 --> 26:02.828
[SPEAKER_00]: Now I think, from memory, when I was, if you're doing like a, like multi-page, like, trad to climbing, I think I would have, how many quick draws would it have?
26:02.808 --> 26:32.781
[SPEAKER_00]: What I have, so I'd have, I'd always have, I'd have like two 10cm ones, one on either side, so I'd like rack all much quick draws, so I'd have the same, like I'd usually have like two sets of cams and two sets of knots, and I would have one set on either side of my harness, so I'd one set of, well I'd have the, well the usually I'd have the
26:32.761 --> 26:47.838
[SPEAKER_00]: three or four Caribbeanism in what kind of climbing it was but I've all the cams on either side and then I would have all the quick draws on either side that were the up with the same on that same both sides so I would always have like two 10cm quick draws.
26:48.219 --> 26:57.469
[SPEAKER_00]: Now the reason for 10cm quick draw which is very short which is what I'd use for like you know sport climbing size quick draw.
26:57.449 --> 27:17.972
[SPEAKER_00]: is I'm always aware that if you, you could not have a 10cm quick draw, but you always need like you always need variation in your quick draws, because you will eventually get to point where if all your quick draws are like 15cm or 17cm or 20cm,
27:17.952 --> 27:38.712
[SPEAKER_00]: you'll get to a point where you clip something and the one of the carabinas either the top one or bottom one is like is a leveraging over something like a you know like a lip of a piece of rock or an edge of something so you have you want something you want to be able to sort of either put something in there longer or something shorter.
27:38.692 --> 27:46.582
[SPEAKER_00]: And I probably attention sent 10cm to me at one is not that useful.
27:47.823 --> 27:56.474
[SPEAKER_00]: I think in my head I quite like I still got that thing of when you first start climbing and you think like if I fall an extra 5cm it's going to be too scary.
27:56.514 --> 28:00.919
[SPEAKER_00]: So I always have two 10cm quick draws.
28:00.899 --> 28:18.283
[SPEAKER_00]: And then I'll have another like I'll have another several 15 cm quick draws or 17 cm quick draws because they'll be like pets only type pets only type ones so I probably have
28:18.263 --> 28:21.352
[SPEAKER_00]: four of those on either side.
28:21.953 --> 28:24.480
[SPEAKER_00]: So, so far that's what's like 10 quick draws.
28:24.962 --> 28:27.148
[SPEAKER_00]: So, now four four on the side.
28:27.188 --> 28:30.959
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I've eight, 17 centimeter quick draws, two 10 centimeter quick draws.
28:31.520 --> 28:33.285
[SPEAKER_00]: Then after that.
28:33.265 --> 28:38.992
[SPEAKER_00]: I had to have some longer ones, so I'd have some 30 cm quick draws.
28:39.033 --> 29:00.100
[SPEAKER_00]: Now this 30 cm quick draws so some of those are completely open, but there are, you know, like an open loop and and some of them are a son, so they've got an open loop at the end, there's quite big,
29:00.080 --> 29:19.776
[SPEAKER_00]: and a part of it sounds like a half-express one and so the half-express ones all the open ones you could use a sling for this but I they're just good for for locks footing or clove hitching onto things like old pegs or you know that that kind of thing
29:19.756 --> 29:30.453
[SPEAKER_00]: and being open and one end makes them easier to clip into something else to extend something else like a quick draw.
29:30.473 --> 29:46.759
[SPEAKER_00]: So if you want to, if you've got your 15cm quick draw and you want to make it
29:46.739 --> 30:12.595
[SPEAKER_00]: Now you could have sometimes like the the Caribbean is a kind of one at one ends got like the rubber stopper anti rotational thing on it so they're quite hard to to get to get on and off and then the other half sometimes that can be quite tight as well so it's not not that easy just to clip one quick drawing to another and you don't want to clip the Caribbean isn't each other and it doesn't really matter but you just don't want to do it.
30:12.575 --> 30:22.232
[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't, I don't find them really a trip hazard, maybe depends on kind of harness you've got where the racking is.
30:24.116 --> 30:30.106
[SPEAKER_00]: If I was like winter climbing, I probably wouldn't use those, this is like rock climbing.
30:30.487 --> 30:33.773
[SPEAKER_00]: I would probably just use alpine drawers.
30:33.753 --> 30:51.559
[SPEAKER_00]: and double and triple them all up rather than that, just so you don't want anything hanging down below your ass, basically, that's going to tangle in your crampons, if you're squatting down, like if you're
30:51.539 --> 31:18.373
[SPEAKER_00]: you know sometimes you might get on the like a piece of ice and you're like going to like a squatting position so you're uh so you kind of come more comfortable in that position to do something and then when you're trying to stand up like suddenly find out you're prospecting loop or you're uh you're a long, long draw is like caught onto your cramp on and which is not not a good one both your hands are attached to ice axes and you can't
31:18.353 --> 31:25.528
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so probably yeah, like it's I don't know so I just
31:25.627 --> 31:54.368
[SPEAKER_00]: probably like a lot of these things probably just go around with like all the same length quick draws like pet sold 17 centimeter quick draws you never know it's any difference so it was just I think for for when I think when I was when I went away for like three years just climbing and just rock climbing for three years we just ended up always having maybe maybe we'd have like 17 17 quick draws or something
31:54.348 --> 32:13.369
[SPEAKER_00]: which is so we say it was sounds like quite a lot but if you're doing if you're doing like really long long routes like trad routes you find that you'll find you you use them up quite quickly like if you're in a few use it if you're climbing you know if you're climbing it you're um
32:13.349 --> 32:22.545
[SPEAKER_00]: But you're climbing, you're always going to put lots of gear in, then you need a good variety of draws.
32:22.585 --> 32:28.675
[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to be running out of quick draws, and also you've got quite a lot of...
32:28.655 --> 32:32.101
[SPEAKER_00]: You've got a much bigger rack these days and you still have in the past.
32:32.141 --> 32:36.268
[SPEAKER_00]: Like in the past you might have like two sets and lots of one sets of one set of cams.
32:36.348 --> 32:43.400
[SPEAKER_00]: But the cams would only go off from like a half, half like finger tip size up to like a three.
32:43.600 --> 32:45.824
[SPEAKER_00]: You probably won't carry a three and a half and a four usually.
32:46.344 --> 32:52.114
[SPEAKER_00]: When now you might be, you've got like two sets of cams from like a black.
32:52.094 --> 33:07.943
[SPEAKER_00]: black alien size all the way up to like it might be kind of like a camel opt for or something so you've got a lot more gear and generally on like multi-pitch routes you almost want to be extending every single piece of gear you put in even if you've got like double robbs
33:07.923 --> 33:23.974
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so you're like they are quite light quick drawers and you're doing it dropping them as well So and on a big wall You always want lots of things to meet quick drawers because you you just use them a lot to to tie things off
33:23.954 --> 33:30.020
[SPEAKER_00]: I think technically if that doesn't make it a quick drive, you've got no carabinas, it's okay to thread them through things.
33:31.062 --> 33:43.254
[SPEAKER_00]: I won't lock them through a nut, but if you're like double them through, like a wire, if you haven't got anything else, if you haven't got any quick carabinas to clip it into the wire, it's kind of handy.
33:43.435 --> 33:47.599
[SPEAKER_00]: Just find them kind of handy in general, but you don't want millions of millions of them.
33:47.579 --> 33:59.273
[SPEAKER_00]: because in the also you do need to keep the bottom carabine something to stop it from spinning around because they are more like to spin around.
33:59.333 --> 34:04.639
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's why the ones with the sun, half sun designed are quite good.
34:05.240 --> 34:08.003
[SPEAKER_00]: I think the ones I've got like maybe like black diamond ones.
34:08.524 --> 34:09.705
[SPEAKER_00]: And then so yeah.
34:09.685 --> 34:31.018
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, but it actually doesn't really matter as long as you know you if you've got like alpine draws Then you can do the same with an alpine draw but it's just Like on clipping a threat sent to me a quick draw He's quicker than on clipping a an alpine draw and then fiddling around trying to extend it out into it a longer sling and things So yeah
34:30.998 --> 34:54.998
[SPEAKER_00]: So as for the locker, yet you can have lockers on both ends, I think in my experience, so we know it again in all those quick draws in your harness, we know we'd always have like two generally, depends on where you're climbing, you have two with a small, the smallest
34:54.978 --> 34:56.702
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I need to have it.
34:56.822 --> 34:59.688
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it was a make sure it was like screwed up screwed up.
34:59.708 --> 35:00.549
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's like tight.
35:00.569 --> 35:03.956
[SPEAKER_00]: So it was so you don't, you don't, you don't have to clip the clip.
35:03.976 --> 35:06.281
[SPEAKER_00]: Something and then God's put the rope and then it's like screwed up.
35:06.582 --> 35:07.905
[SPEAKER_00]: It's generally a screw get it.
35:07.925 --> 35:09.307
[SPEAKER_00]: If you want it screwed up, it's on the screw.
35:09.327 --> 35:11.552
[SPEAKER_00]: If you want it on the screw, if you want it on the screw, it's screwed up.
35:11.532 --> 35:22.433
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, you could have it on both ends, but in my experience the rope always is always on clicked from the from the rope.
35:22.914 --> 35:24.497
[SPEAKER_00]: The rope is always on click from the carabina.
35:25.479 --> 35:26.942
[SPEAKER_00]: Like it shouldn't do.
35:26.922 --> 35:54.178
[SPEAKER_00]: But it does, like if you clip the rope in the right direction with the right orientation, like the rope shouldn't unclip But sometimes Like when you directly above a piece of gear You haven't, the only other rope is like you look down is like, hmm, that could like, it's not so bad if you've got why get carabinas But in the past when you had And bent get carabinas You know, you look down, you're like, oh god, that looks like it's just going to like unclip itself
35:54.158 --> 36:02.348
[SPEAKER_00]: So really, it's more of a psychological, the screw gate is more of a psychological thing than an actual thing thing.
36:02.830 --> 36:05.299
[SPEAKER_00]: So see if you're climbing in like...
36:05.920 --> 36:27.287
[SPEAKER_00]: like in I think in the media there was like places where you were climbing and there was like one bolt and then you just have like quest stuff up on this uh like there's this quest thing off of a bolt where the rock is like amazing like tolemy granite where you could just kind of go wherever you want and you're not going to fall off like as long as you're confident you just
36:27.267 --> 36:45.360
[SPEAKER_00]: good pad around wherever you go, you're not going to fall off, but when it's all like crunchy and gravely and stuff, you definitely want to, you know, cross all your cross all your tears or it's so by just, you know, you got that one bolt or that one piece of gear that's good,
36:45.340 --> 36:51.013
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that's where you use your screw gear because psychological is like, that's a screw gear.
36:51.053 --> 36:58.569
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not going to, like, it's a bit stronger than a normal Caribbean, also the ropes not going to come out and it's, so it's more like psychological.
36:59.010 --> 37:04.362
[SPEAKER_00]: Probably the same with the 30cm quick drive is that you, you're by having, you know,
37:04.342 --> 37:08.587
[SPEAKER_00]: by having like an armory, like a golf bag and a play golf.
37:08.928 --> 37:22.045
[SPEAKER_00]: But you know you've got this armory of stuff, you've got all your different cams and you've got your all this kind of stuff is that you're in your head, it's like I've got all the gear and need and, you know, away you go.
37:22.165 --> 37:23.667
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's all about
37:23.647 --> 37:25.129
[SPEAKER_00]: building it with confidence.
37:25.169 --> 37:27.372
[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes you're like, oh, no, where's that?
37:27.392 --> 37:29.135
[SPEAKER_00]: Where's my tent sent me a quick draw gone?
37:29.155 --> 37:30.397
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I can't go up.
37:30.417 --> 37:30.997
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't go up.
37:31.037 --> 37:31.338
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't go up.
37:31.358 --> 37:32.800
[SPEAKER_00]: That's my tent sent me a quick draw.
37:32.820 --> 37:44.136
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, list, you know, little things like a lot of our totem cams are broken just from just using them like plastic triggers of snapped and the various things have snapped on them.
37:44.116 --> 37:59.357
[SPEAKER_00]: and Vanessa's like, oh, I can't climb on them, they're not strong, and I'm like, you know, they're completely strong, still, but they're just, you know, they're just broke and said, you know, I like put tape on them and, you know, to get them to keep keep working.
37:59.337 --> 38:01.520
[SPEAKER_00]: but that's like, oh no, that's not safe.
38:01.540 --> 38:02.381
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not climbing on them.
38:02.782 --> 38:06.587
[SPEAKER_00]: So yes, it's all psychological.
38:06.627 --> 38:14.577
[SPEAKER_00]: Like you see people climbing on some really, really, really, really super, super old kit, you know, old friends and things.
38:15.218 --> 38:25.271
[SPEAKER_00]: And you're like, you know, that that sling is like 30 years old and that, you know, they've got like rainbow covered rainbow colored slings on their, on their wild country friends and stuff.
38:25.291 --> 38:26.813
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, you know, well, that is.
38:26.793 --> 38:56.800
[SPEAKER_00]: So, people, some people just don't care, and, you know, I once gave someone a rope of mine away, because it was, I thought it was too old and knack it, and then next time I, next time I climbed with him was about 10 years later, and that was the rope we had, and it was like seven and a half mill, and he was just using it by itself, and I was like seconding him, and I was just like, oh my god, so he has some people to think about it,
38:56.780 --> 38:57.742
[SPEAKER_00]: Kind of stuff.
38:58.243 --> 39:01.127
[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, so I hope I hope I answer the question.
39:01.488 --> 39:12.527
[SPEAKER_00]: Another question was someone raw and it was something like what have your views changed about food like mountaineering food.
39:12.507 --> 39:15.651
[SPEAKER_00]: And I guess they have in some ways.
39:16.171 --> 39:25.222
[SPEAKER_00]: I think you can divide food into, like, mountaineering food, into your dehydrated food.
39:25.662 --> 39:27.745
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, which is like improved massively.
39:28.285 --> 39:32.110
[SPEAKER_00]: And I've been on trips where that's all you had to eat for, like, months, like, two months.
39:32.130 --> 39:32.790
[SPEAKER_00]: That's all you had.
39:33.111 --> 39:34.372
[SPEAKER_00]: You had a massive hold-all.
39:34.713 --> 39:37.716
[SPEAKER_00]: Just full of loads of dehydrated packets of food.
39:38.217 --> 39:39.358
[SPEAKER_00]: And you would have that, like,
39:39.338 --> 40:02.123
[SPEAKER_00]: Morning lunch when every lunch morning and you know you'd be having beef strong enough for your breakfast Then you'd be having some monkfish casserole for your tea or something and after after two months of that I kind of get bit sick everyone gets sick of the various ones and all the good ones disappear And you just left with all the same spaghetti ball in there is that doesn't taste like spaghetti ball in there
40:02.103 --> 40:19.352
[SPEAKER_00]: So, they have a place and then you have the old school mountaineering food which is like mash, powder, super noodles, well, so would you have, I guess porridge, like instant porridge, stuff like that.
40:19.332 --> 40:30.728
[SPEAKER_00]: And that stuff is, it's really, it's really not great in this, it hasn't really got on many calories in it and it's also pretty poor quality food.
40:31.169 --> 40:38.179
[SPEAKER_00]: I'd say that a lot of the added food is also pretty poor quality, but it has more calories.
40:38.560 --> 40:41.003
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a really good account of how
40:40.983 --> 41:01.152
[SPEAKER_00]: They can the Vietnam War, the Australians, who were like really, really amazing soldiers for various reasons, when they were fighting Vietnam, they would give, they would, they'd, they'd, they'd always use these like British army, composite rations, where you'd, you'd get like a box and they'd be like,
41:01.132 --> 41:21.267
[SPEAKER_00]: be like tea, you milk, you sugar, you'd have a tin of curry, tin of, you know, some sausages, it was all like tin's, tin's of stuff, stew, this kind of stuff and you would, you know, you would heat it all up and you would eat and it would and it tasted like food, most of it tasted like food.
41:21.247 --> 41:32.913
[SPEAKER_00]: Like when I was a kid, like my dad would have like, you know, if you went off walking, you'd just give you like some tins out of one of these compo, compo, pack things.
41:33.996 --> 41:39.087
[SPEAKER_00]: But the Americans had like the sea rations and like sea rations that see with us with a calica.
41:39.067 --> 42:02.745
[SPEAKER_00]: They were like, science is answer to food which you could store for like 50 years and it wouldn't go off and you could throw it out helicopters and store it in really hot warehouses in the desert or in the jungle or in the Arctic and it had like I think a box of sea rations was like
42:02.725 --> 42:04.107
[SPEAKER_00]: 3000 calories or something.
42:04.147 --> 42:07.714
[SPEAKER_00]: It was enough calories for one soldier for one day or something.
42:08.154 --> 42:12.863
[SPEAKER_00]: But the Australian's absolutely detested the sea rations.
42:13.364 --> 42:15.487
[SPEAKER_00]: And originally it was like, well, they're fighting in Vietnam.
42:15.507 --> 42:19.033
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll just give them Australian rations because it's like logistically easier.
42:19.494 --> 42:22.219
[SPEAKER_00]: But they absolutely hated them because they didn't.
42:22.199 --> 42:41.085
[SPEAKER_00]: They were too sweet, they were too salty, they didn't look like food, they had, you know, all these kind of names for things and they didn't have any tea, which is like, oh my god, that's enough to cause like a mutant, you know, tea, they had such a coffee and they just found them like inedible and it made them, um,
42:41.065 --> 43:03.090
[SPEAKER_00]: the end ended resulted in like busy malnutrition because the Australians just weren't eating this food because they found it awful and it did lead to some kind of minor mutiny where they were like getting them like the food they need is not just, oh that'd be nice for them like this is like in very important you know this is like vital that they get their own food
43:03.070 --> 43:09.402
[SPEAKER_00]: So often they would not even eat the American food if that's all it was and they would just wait until they could get supplied.
43:09.923 --> 43:13.590
[SPEAKER_00]: Like the basic it was like the British food.
43:14.952 --> 43:21.805
[SPEAKER_00]: So a lot of that kind of old school alpine food is probably a little bit like a little bit like that.
43:22.561 --> 43:31.338
[SPEAKER_00]: like for one, like you can eat like baby, baby powder, baby like food, you know, the hydrated baby food or whatever.
43:31.379 --> 43:36.208
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you can easily eat it for like one meal or a whole root or something.
43:36.689 --> 43:40.617
[SPEAKER_00]: But for me, I always found like I was like done with it like after I've done one root with that.
43:40.677 --> 43:43.202
[SPEAKER_00]: I just couldn't eat it again.
43:43.182 --> 44:05.833
[SPEAKER_00]: and things like, even like mashed potato powder, which you know, kind of nutritious, a like easy to cook, you know, you could add things to it, you know, tell like butter, cheese, any kind of things to it, but even so like there's something about it, just kind of like French people seem to be able to eat it and find it good.
44:05.853 --> 44:05.933
[UNKNOWN]: But,
44:05.913 --> 44:09.076
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I just couldn't do it.
44:09.456 --> 44:33.338
[SPEAKER_00]: I probably now just go for like a Mick Fowler like a Snickers bar Like just I'd rather I probably probably rather eat something that I know I can eat And these and easily and doesn't eat cooking than than that so like so I'm So I'm a big fan of just like you know just like musely
44:33.318 --> 44:36.705
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, just musely with milk powder in it in a bag.
44:37.066 --> 44:40.834
[SPEAKER_00]: So just that's you just had cold water not hot water Oh, that's disgusting.
44:41.315 --> 44:50.635
[SPEAKER_00]: I just had hot cold water to it and then you can eat out of a cup of something in your sleeping bag like for me I know I'd eat that for breakfast and dinner probably
44:50.615 --> 45:09.147
[SPEAKER_00]: If you, you know, for like where it food and I'm sure I've to said this before, but the Yavid Yavin, the Swedish guy who sailed around the world a few times and now it's 85 and is still like trying to sail around the world, trying to sail to New Zealand.
45:09.127 --> 45:13.773
[SPEAKER_00]: like a homemade boat where you basically, after the lay down, it's so small.
45:15.154 --> 45:21.502
[SPEAKER_00]: Like when he was planning to sail to New Zealand, all he had was musally and a tin of sardines are there.
45:22.203 --> 45:28.010
[SPEAKER_00]: And he reckon that that was all that everything you needed basically in your nutritionally.
45:28.831 --> 45:32.595
[SPEAKER_00]: And probably I like fats and everything else.
45:33.056 --> 45:36.400
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I'd fruit in it so you weren't going to get scary and things.
45:36.380 --> 45:50.958
[SPEAKER_00]: So, and he said that people are basically so bored, they try and fill their days with their very, you know, with the variety and you know, obsess with food and what they're eating and what they're, you know, what's for tea and that kind of goes to life or so boring.
45:51.299 --> 46:01.932
[SPEAKER_00]: But if you're sailing to New Zealand in the, you know, across the South Atlantic and, you know, and across the Pacific, you probably have more on your mind than what's for tea and stuff.
46:03.245 --> 46:26.333
[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, so, but on the other side is, again, I've probably said this before, when I went to Mount Kenya, we had all we had flower chickpeas, flower lentils, and oil, was that it, and rice.
46:26.313 --> 46:27.675
[SPEAKER_00]: Was that it, Rice?
46:27.695 --> 46:29.577
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, probably, right, yeah.
46:30.218 --> 46:32.922
[SPEAKER_00]: The movie just had flower and lentils, I can't remember now.
46:33.222 --> 46:43.956
[SPEAKER_00]: But we basically, it was very compact, what we had, you know, like a big bag of flower, big bag of lentils, probably probably had rice as well.
46:44.497 --> 46:51.826
[SPEAKER_00]: And so we made, like, made like chapattas using the flower, and then you made like a doll with the rice.
46:51.846 --> 46:56.252
[SPEAKER_00]: You mix the, you just put the rice and the lentils
46:56.232 --> 47:02.741
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think, really, it wasn't enough, there wasn't enough food.
47:03.321 --> 47:10.871
[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't really do any calculations, but you'll be able to say, like, shepherds, they'll just eat this mountain of rice and darl and stuff.
47:10.891 --> 47:23.488
[SPEAKER_00]: And the reason is, I think it's just not very dense nutritionally, and to have it to fuel up for mountaineering, you have to eat like an immense amount of it to do it.
47:23.468 --> 47:53.475
[SPEAKER_00]: where pasta seems to be more dense in that so when we went around to walk around Kenya went to this hot, the mountaineering, Kenya mountaineering hot and there was like nobody there but it was always like food left behind and oh my god we're just like you're just like looking for anything really calorific because you're just kind of
47:53.455 --> 48:09.068
[SPEAKER_00]: You don't feel hungry but I think your body was just like missing out on something and I've got in there and there was like some past then we cooked this pasta up and got it tight tested amazing just like raw, not raw pasta but just like pasta with nothing on it just like tested amazing.
48:09.048 --> 48:32.946
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I think the next trip I went on, I think I would prioritize like a diet, like a high fat, like a bit of pasta, spaghetti with oil, with some kind of fat.
48:32.926 --> 48:55.525
[SPEAKER_00]: And a few other things, so I don't know what it's called, but there's a meal, it's basically you boil your pasta and then you put your cheese on the pasta, then you put oil on it, and you put some spices on, you put some chilli flakes and some salt, some pepper on it, whatever.
48:55.505 --> 48:58.549
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like a very, very simple, it's very, very simple to make.
48:58.929 --> 49:04.055
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, you can have to use like a little bit more fuel than if you just have like super noodles.
49:04.516 --> 49:23.098
[SPEAKER_00]: But the quality of the nutrition, even though pasta's not going to be amazing, but the quality and the density of calories, it's going to be like much, much greater from having like some pasta with olive oil and some cheese or whatever.
49:23.078 --> 49:39.029
[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, it was for carrying like a little bit of extra food, like you wouldn't do this if you were like, you know, on the grandjuerass or something, but you would do it if you walk up to grandjuerass and you can have some food, you know, before you set off or like on a longer expedition.
49:39.771 --> 49:44.580
[SPEAKER_00]: And it gets like, I guess like learning all those other things, so like having
49:44.560 --> 50:04.543
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you know, things like, if you're going somewhere cold, like, you know, you know, the classic old school things of like cheese and sausage and, you know, the old alpine kind of things, like, I like create like crackers and, you know, all like all that kind of stuff.
50:04.523 --> 50:07.130
[SPEAKER_00]: They are actually really really good.
50:07.350 --> 50:10.297
[SPEAKER_00]: We kind of dismiss how people use to do things.
50:11.661 --> 50:16.292
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to fire something like Pemicon or something, which is just like fat.
50:17.014 --> 50:17.696
[SPEAKER_00]: Like a lot of...
50:17.716 --> 50:21.385
[SPEAKER_00]: It was that Russians have like pig fat wrapped up in...
50:21.365 --> 50:29.940
[SPEAKER_00]: something, but I think some of those all-school ways of eating are probably really good.
50:30.100 --> 50:42.883
[SPEAKER_00]: Like I've said before, when we went to Denali, we're like cooked up a huge batch of bacon, and we poured all the fat into a plastic bag.
50:42.863 --> 51:01.328
[SPEAKER_00]: and like that was like that was amazing like just just like reheat the bacon because it was boltically cold so the bacon just was frozen straight away but just reheatting the bacon in the pan and frying pan and putting it into a bagel like heat the bagel up as well put it in the bagel
51:01.308 --> 51:07.774
[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, it was like amazing and then adding the fat into other meals.
51:07.814 --> 51:13.178
[SPEAKER_00]: So when you even when you have your dehydrated food, you've got this big bag of fat basically.
51:13.518 --> 51:17.962
[SPEAKER_00]: Like when I was a kid that's what you had, you didn't have olive oil and sunflower oil.
51:17.982 --> 51:28.651
[SPEAKER_00]: You just had this thing in the fridge which was just like a bowl of fat, which is what you've got from like roasting some hats, roasting some beef or something.
51:28.671 --> 51:30.673
[SPEAKER_00]: You just keep all the fat.
51:30.653 --> 51:45.675
[SPEAKER_00]: So when you fried something like an egg or something you just get a spoonful of the fat and it turns out like that was like way healthier, like margarine is like fucking poison and um and so it's most most of that stuff you put in food these days.
51:45.655 --> 51:55.595
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so that's kind of the sad things that when you were, I think in the Second World War, the only food, one of the only foods that wasn't rationed was fish and chips.
51:56.256 --> 51:58.922
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, the fish and chips then was made from taler.
51:59.242 --> 52:02.128
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the oil is taler, which is like beef fat.
52:02.108 --> 52:19.300
[SPEAKER_00]: And, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and again, it's like, as a kid, like, everyone had, like, so much fish and chips, where it, when I grew up in whole, because it's like a fishing, fishing, city, and nobody was fat, and it was, because there was no, like, all these, like, different, different oils and stuff.
52:19.380 --> 52:21.384
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so it's, it's, it's interesting.
52:21.404 --> 52:25.011
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so I think I wouldn't, I would, I'd always, I'm, so,
52:24.991 --> 52:42.840
[SPEAKER_00]: think about the fat, fat content, like the butter, like put anything with the can, well, if it's not going to be super cold, just how like an just an algae and bottle, small one, big one, medium size one, of olive oil, or some kind of good quality oil, and just pour that into food.
52:42.860 --> 52:45.524
[SPEAKER_00]: And that'll give you like a huge boost of calories.
52:45.925 --> 52:50.492
[SPEAKER_00]: But also, I think it also just is good for your brain as well, I think, I think it's just,
52:50.472 --> 52:51.815
[SPEAKER_00]: Good for your morale.
52:52.276 --> 52:54.542
[SPEAKER_00]: It's to have it's to add for you.
52:54.682 --> 52:59.614
[SPEAKER_00]: I've had fat this like obsession we have with fat It is a really detrimental thing.
53:00.055 --> 53:05.528
[SPEAKER_00]: I think my kids just come back from swimming to the gun open the dough in a second the guy
53:05.508 --> 53:08.032
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I did have another question.
53:08.052 --> 53:16.864
[SPEAKER_00]: I did have another question about helmets, but now the back that means I can go and put my kayak on the top of the car and head off into the unknown.
53:17.105 --> 53:24.235
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I'll never come back and this will be in my last podcast, but if it is, I do apologize for being so slack.
53:24.335 --> 53:27.580
[SPEAKER_00]: I have missed you all, you know, all the few people wherever you are.
53:28.261 --> 53:32.427
[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm sure that lots of talk about the news or that kind of stuff.
53:32.407 --> 53:37.032
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I've actually made it before the comment.
53:37.412 --> 53:56.153
[SPEAKER_00]: I've actually, I think recently, I saw this video and it was Brendan Gleason, you know, Brendan Gleason is the actor and he was basically saying how everyone's just going off all the time but no one's got any solutions for anything and I was like
53:56.133 --> 53:59.239
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm going to, I think I'm going to take that.
53:59.420 --> 54:01.323
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just going to not say anything.
54:01.524 --> 54:07.736
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just going to keep, sometimes I might say something, but I'm just going to keep only a comment just to be, you know.
54:08.177 --> 54:10.362
[SPEAKER_00]: And then, so it's funny, it's funny.
54:10.382 --> 54:13.568
[SPEAKER_00]: I wonder if you, I wonder if you have to train yourself.
54:13.548 --> 54:15.593
[SPEAKER_00]: to stay your hand.
54:15.914 --> 54:16.415
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you know what I mean?
54:16.435 --> 54:27.100
[SPEAKER_00]: Like if you're like in an old, in which or one of these like sword and the sorcery things, everyone, every time you see something you don't like, you like pull out your sword and you have chopped their heads off of something.
54:27.581 --> 54:28.924
[SPEAKER_00]: And um,
54:28.904 --> 54:31.910
[SPEAKER_00]: like that rolled out, the rolled out story.
54:33.172 --> 54:36.358
[SPEAKER_00]: But you see, you have to train yourself to stay your hand.
54:37.179 --> 54:38.442
[SPEAKER_00]: Hmm, some day I'm staying my hand.
54:38.782 --> 54:41.447
[SPEAKER_00]: So whenever you see something, you have this little thought about it.
54:41.968 --> 54:45.234
[SPEAKER_00]: And like I can share my, my thought about this.
54:45.294 --> 54:48.921
[SPEAKER_00]: My, my, I mean, it's like who cares, who really cares.
54:48.901 --> 54:55.694
[SPEAKER_00]: So I've been staying my hand for a while, which is probably a form of like giving in, but is it?
54:56.155 --> 54:57.618
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, is it giving in?
54:57.698 --> 55:05.754
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really know something after thinking about it, but I think the alternative is probably something else that's equally as equally as bad.
55:05.794 --> 55:10.403
[SPEAKER_00]: I think I just need to, you know, just get my kayak and just head off.
55:11.783 --> 55:12.444
[SPEAKER_00]: into the mist.
55:12.704 --> 55:13.405
[SPEAKER_00]: Never seen again.
55:14.045 --> 55:14.706
[SPEAKER_00]: Never seen again.
55:15.427 --> 55:27.939
[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so, so, anybody got any questions that I can that I can put into a folder and remember, till next time, then send them in and I shall promise to do another podcast soon.
55:27.999 --> 55:33.504
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry if there's any like clicking or lips and maccing or anything like that.
55:33.524 --> 55:34.325
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just podcasting.
55:34.765 --> 55:38.148
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm probably out of the practice with these kind of things.
55:38.689 --> 55:39.850
[SPEAKER_00]: But, um,
55:39.830 --> 55:42.600
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, until next time, it's this safe.
