Let's Get Physical

WEBVTT
00:00.031 --> 00:02.834
[SPEAKER_03]: It's just like hip thrust, hip thrust, hip thrust, hip thrust.
00:03.075 --> 00:04.997
[SPEAKER_03]: Looking at each other, looking at each other, hip thrust.
00:05.037 --> 00:07.220
[SPEAKER_03]: Looking at each other, like, what do you mean, Jamie Lee Curtis?
00:07.260 --> 00:08.481
[SPEAKER_03]: What are you asking for right now?
00:09.322 --> 00:29.667
[SPEAKER_06]: These aerobic sequences went on so long that people felt like it was a porn flick instead of an aerobic smoothing.
00:30.305 --> 00:34.990
[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome to the Pop Culture Preservation Society.
00:35.250 --> 00:43.879
[SPEAKER_03]: The podcast for people born in the Big Wheel Generation, who are the first people to turn their living rooms into a roguest studios, with the addition of a 20-pound VCR.
00:44.460 --> 00:49.545
[SPEAKER_02]: We believe our Gen X child has gave us unforgettable songs, stories, characters, and images.
00:49.946 --> 00:55.131
[SPEAKER_02]: And if we don't talk about them, they'll disappear, like Marshall Will and Holly, on a routine expedition.
00:55.111 --> 01:15.255
[SPEAKER_01]: And today, we'll be saving the glorious sweat band soak moment in the 1980s when America pushed the coffee table out of the way, popped to VHS into the VCR, and collectively decided that exercise shouldn't involve neon spandex, enthusiastic grapefines, and a whole lot of feel the burn.
01:15.295 --> 01:21.523
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm Carolyn, I'm Kristen, and I'm Michelle, and we are your pop culture preservationist.
01:24.102 --> 01:35.100
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, you guys, before we get started, I need you to get in the right mindset.
01:35.861 --> 01:47.781
[SPEAKER_01]: Because today we are going full 80's fitness and Michelle for our YouTube viewers is in
01:48.335 --> 01:53.306
[SPEAKER_01]: Saiponi tail, her free swept sweat band had been thing.
01:53.346 --> 01:54.629
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure what that's about that.
01:54.649 --> 01:55.411
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I know what it's about.
01:55.431 --> 01:56.353
[SPEAKER_01]: It's about that whole thing.
01:56.373 --> 01:57.716
[SPEAKER_02]: It's about my makeup.
01:57.736 --> 01:58.277
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes.
01:58.337 --> 01:59.620
[SPEAKER_01]: It's been released today.
02:00.121 --> 02:04.170
[SPEAKER_01]: The flash dance ripped T-shirt look and a happy green dumbbell.
02:04.832 --> 02:05.894
[SPEAKER_03]: Amazing.
02:05.954 --> 02:07.778
[SPEAKER_03]: That's the name of my new restaurant.
02:07.758 --> 02:09.220
[SPEAKER_01]: But I know that.
02:09.240 --> 02:09.620
[SPEAKER_01]: My stripper.
02:09.640 --> 02:09.840
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
02:09.860 --> 02:15.987
[SPEAKER_01]: So we're talking neon, Lea Tard's leg warmers, maybe like Michelle, a slightly aggressive headband.
02:16.448 --> 02:22.815
[SPEAKER_01]: And absolutely no shame, because this is Pete Jane Von and VHS in the living room energy.
02:23.376 --> 02:26.179
[SPEAKER_01]: But honestly, there's a reason this era stuck with us.
02:26.700 --> 02:29.703
[SPEAKER_01]: This is when at home fitness really became a thing.
02:30.204 --> 02:37.512
[SPEAKER_01]: It was fun, it was accessible, and it means you feel like you were part of something, even though you were maybe just by yourself in the living room.
02:37.492 --> 02:42.906
[SPEAKER_01]: So yes, this era also planted a few seeds when it comes to how we think about our bodies and fitness.
02:42.946 --> 02:44.270
[SPEAKER_01]: And we've talked about that before.
02:44.831 --> 02:46.656
[SPEAKER_01]: Today we're going to kind of stick with the fun part.
02:46.756 --> 02:54.015
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, the music, the energy, the slightly ridiculous moves that we embraced and we embraced all of it, you guys.
02:53.995 --> 03:01.818
[SPEAKER_01]: So this is your permission to not take yourself too seriously to turn up the music, lean into the nostalgia, and just move your body.
03:02.380 --> 03:08.157
[SPEAKER_01]: And if you feel the urge to yell, stop the insanity at any point, we support it.
03:09.031 --> 03:09.752
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, ladies.
03:09.792 --> 03:10.774
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's do this, okay?
03:10.794 --> 03:12.136
[SPEAKER_02]: It's your buns and the air.
03:12.416 --> 03:14.760
[SPEAKER_02]: Everyone, we don't want to see you in the air.
03:14.820 --> 03:16.402
[SPEAKER_02]: Wave your buns in the air.
03:16.422 --> 03:25.396
[SPEAKER_01]: So long before, neonliatards and VHS tapes to cover our living rooms, the idea of working out at home actually goes way, way back.
03:25.976 --> 03:26.758
[SPEAKER_01]: I was surprised.
03:26.918 --> 03:28.500
[SPEAKER_01]: Get a load of these fun facts, ladies.
03:29.161 --> 03:32.406
[SPEAKER_01]: All the way back to the late 1800s.
03:32.386 --> 03:47.982
[SPEAKER_01]: So in the late 19th century there was a movement it was called physical culture it began in Europe and quickly spread to the US and it began really promoting strength and health and discipline especially for at that time the growing middle class
03:47.962 --> 03:50.769
[SPEAKER_01]: there was a man named Yogan Sandout, okay?
03:50.789 --> 04:03.962
[SPEAKER_01]: He was often called the first bodybuilder or the world's first bodybuilder, but he entrepreneurially sold male order fitness guides, dumbbells, and even early versions of home gym equipment.
04:04.195 --> 04:05.397
[SPEAKER_03]: This is like, can you remember those?
04:05.717 --> 04:11.326
[SPEAKER_03]: I now, when you say that, 1800s and bodybuilder, now I can see the pictures in like Guinness.
04:11.346 --> 04:14.691
[SPEAKER_03]: In the Guinness book, it could be some black guy in my coat.
04:14.711 --> 04:17.275
[SPEAKER_03]: I have a guy with muscles and suspenders or whatever.
04:17.395 --> 04:25.707
[SPEAKER_02]: It's like a funny shoe, but it looks almost like suspenders, but then it goes to like, like, underwear, like tidings.
04:25.727 --> 04:26.929
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, great.
04:26.909 --> 04:33.998
[SPEAKER_01]: And it started primarily because industrialization was happening, and it was people were just sitting around more.
04:34.018 --> 04:37.702
[SPEAKER_01]: They weren't as active and, you know, they weren't plowing the fields anymore.
04:37.722 --> 04:38.203
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
04:38.603 --> 04:44.611
[SPEAKER_01]: And suddenly, exercise became something that you had to intentionally do rather than just being built into your daily life.
04:45.232 --> 04:48.816
[SPEAKER_01]: And this was perhaps one of the most interesting things I came across.
04:49.235 --> 05:09.707
[SPEAKER_01]: fun fact that some Victorian homes actually had built in pulley systems and resistance machines basically pelatons great great grandparent oh my god but again i can picture it like the woman in her long dresses like pulley pulley pulley right yes all right i can see it
05:09.687 --> 05:10.508
[SPEAKER_01]: So here we go.
05:10.548 --> 05:12.090
[SPEAKER_01]: We've, it's in our homes now.
05:12.210 --> 05:15.734
[SPEAKER_01]: And by the 1920s, fitness actually entered the airways.
05:16.015 --> 05:23.343
[SPEAKER_01]: There were daily exercise programs that were broadcast on the radio that guided listeners through routines in real time.
05:23.403 --> 05:24.405
[SPEAKER_03]: That's great.
05:24.845 --> 05:25.866
[SPEAKER_03]: I want that now.
05:25.886 --> 05:26.587
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
05:26.627 --> 05:27.148
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you can't.
05:27.268 --> 05:27.889
[SPEAKER_01]: You can't.
05:28.229 --> 05:28.890
[SPEAKER_01]: You're an app.
05:29.330 --> 05:30.332
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
05:30.352 --> 05:31.633
[SPEAKER_01]: I want the radio.
05:31.673 --> 05:32.715
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
05:33.095 --> 05:34.016
[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
05:34.176 --> 05:34.817
[SPEAKER_01]: There you go.
05:34.797 --> 05:35.818
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, yeah.
05:35.838 --> 05:36.880
[SPEAKER_01]: So there weren't any visuals.
05:36.920 --> 05:38.442
[SPEAKER_01]: You just kind of used your imagination.
05:38.482 --> 05:43.929
[SPEAKER_01]: So I can only imagine what I would have been looking like because I was at Pilates this morning.
05:44.089 --> 05:45.971
[SPEAKER_01]: And she says there are visuals.
05:46.091 --> 05:49.896
[SPEAKER_01]: She walks you through everything and I'm always the person that she comes over to.
05:50.277 --> 05:53.741
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, you know, you're right, Leg extended.
05:53.761 --> 05:55.423
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I've got it in the air, but it's both.
05:55.784 --> 05:57.446
[SPEAKER_03]: And she's like, Leg careless.
05:57.466 --> 05:59.408
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you're not learning pretty much.
05:59.468 --> 06:04.635
[SPEAKER_01]: So I can't imagine what I would have
06:04.615 --> 06:06.398
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so that's kind of the air waves.
06:06.418 --> 06:07.320
[SPEAKER_01]: We got the radio.
06:07.580 --> 06:11.787
[SPEAKER_01]: But then came one of the biggest pioneers of at home fitness media.
06:12.007 --> 06:12.909
[SPEAKER_01]: We got the TV.
06:12.929 --> 06:15.814
[SPEAKER_01]: We go and we get, who do we get, Kristen?
06:16.114 --> 06:18.498
[SPEAKER_01]: Jack Lane, we get Jack Lane!
06:18.518 --> 06:18.939
[SPEAKER_01]: We get Jack Lane!
06:19.179 --> 06:20.181
[SPEAKER_00]: My name is Jack Lane.
06:20.762 --> 06:23.506
[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm here for one reason and one reason only.
06:23.527 --> 06:27.433
[SPEAKER_00]: To show you how to feel better and look better so you can live longer.
06:27.548 --> 06:28.869
[SPEAKER_01]: with his little ballet slippers.
06:28.889 --> 06:31.011
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yes, and his little cute little outfit.
06:31.091 --> 06:42.080
[SPEAKER_01]: And he's actually one of America's first televised workout shows, inviting Americans, especially American housewives to exercise along with him in their living rooms.
06:42.341 --> 06:43.822
[SPEAKER_03]: And it was very calisthenic-y.
06:44.242 --> 06:44.643
[SPEAKER_03]: It was.
06:44.843 --> 06:46.004
[SPEAKER_01]: And I would just, I never did it.
06:46.084 --> 06:47.845
[SPEAKER_01]: I just watched it.
06:47.865 --> 06:48.626
[SPEAKER_01]: I watched it too.
06:48.886 --> 06:49.507
[SPEAKER_01]: But I do.
06:49.667 --> 06:53.770
[SPEAKER_01]: Now that you said that when you said calisthenic-y, I don't know if my mom was doing it.
06:53.790 --> 06:56.813
[SPEAKER_01]: And I kind of watched her if it was just on.
06:58.109 --> 07:07.007
[SPEAKER_01]: I was probably like in second grade or something, but I thought, when I get up in the morning, I need to do like I did jumping jacks and I did some stuff.
07:07.267 --> 07:13.339
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like I think from watching that, I thought that that should be something I did get a jump start on my day.
07:14.462 --> 07:17.147
[SPEAKER_03]: Like there were no jumping jacks before Jack LaLaine.
07:17.853 --> 07:19.696
[SPEAKER_03]: No, I didn't know that the jump is, is it called a jack?
07:19.717 --> 07:20.197
[SPEAKER_02]: Is that the name?
07:20.258 --> 07:20.859
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just just saying.
07:20.879 --> 07:21.520
[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna go with that.
07:21.921 --> 07:22.382
[SPEAKER_01]: This looks so small.
07:22.402 --> 07:22.943
[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna go with that.
07:22.963 --> 07:23.464
[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna go with that.
07:23.484 --> 07:24.325
[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna go with that.
07:24.466 --> 07:25.087
[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna go with that.
07:25.107 --> 07:25.648
[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna go with that.
07:25.668 --> 07:26.369
[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna go with that.
07:26.389 --> 07:26.930
[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna go with that.
07:26.950 --> 07:27.611
[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna go with that.
07:27.632 --> 07:28.153
[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna go with that.
07:28.173 --> 07:28.814
[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna go with that.
07:28.834 --> 07:29.355
[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna go with that.
07:29.375 --> 07:30.056
[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna go with that.
07:30.076 --> 07:30.757
[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna go with that.
07:30.777 --> 07:31.298
[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna go with that.
07:31.319 --> 07:31.920
[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna go with that.
07:31.940 --> 07:32.741
[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna go with that.
07:32.761 --> 07:33.382
[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna go with that.
07:33.402 --> 07:33.923
[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna go with that.
07:33.943 --> 07:34.645
[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna go with that.
07:34.665 --> 07:34.765
[UNKNOWN]: We're
07:35.099 --> 07:38.543
[SPEAKER_03]: Think about it, like in Jim class, everybody did jumping jacks.
07:38.804 --> 07:41.026
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, Jack starts a great exercise.
07:41.187 --> 07:41.948
[SPEAKER_03]: You're a whole body.
07:42.248 --> 07:43.610
[SPEAKER_03]: He did it in his little belly issues.
07:44.110 --> 07:53.482
[SPEAKER_01]: And it really caught on in the 1950s, because this is post war, suburban life, you know, more housewife staying at home and we've got more TVs.
07:54.083 --> 07:59.790
[SPEAKER_01]: And we've got this now starting to be a cultural focus on health, appearance, and longevity.
07:59.770 --> 08:04.151
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I would have, yeah, you've got to look lovely for your husband when he comes home from the office.
08:04.393 --> 08:06.523
[SPEAKER_03]: This is, you've got to maintain your figure.
08:07.027 --> 08:12.355
[SPEAKER_01]: Indeed, which sadly kind of continued and as we'll talk about a little bit.
08:12.375 --> 08:17.382
[SPEAKER_01]: So the 60s and 70s roll in and at home fitness then it starts to become more commercial.
08:17.823 --> 08:21.028
[SPEAKER_01]: It's more accessible, their programs like slim nastics.
08:21.588 --> 08:22.930
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh yes, slim nastics.
08:23.411 --> 08:24.993
[SPEAKER_03]: I totally forgot about that.
08:25.334 --> 08:32.224
[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, targeting women specifically often emphasizing grace and weight loss over strength.
08:32.204 --> 08:34.006
[SPEAKER_01]: And there were workout records.
08:34.367 --> 08:35.008
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, final.
08:35.428 --> 08:39.193
[SPEAKER_01]: And I do remember my mom having a paperback guide had like exercise.
08:39.233 --> 08:40.795
[SPEAKER_01]: And maybe it was a jack little lane book.
08:41.136 --> 08:42.317
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think about it.
08:42.397 --> 08:46.563
[SPEAKER_01]: But you could go on and it showed you like step by step how to do the different moves.
08:46.583 --> 08:47.644
[SPEAKER_01]: How to do a donkey kick.
08:48.044 --> 08:49.126
[SPEAKER_01]: So we've got that happening.
08:49.146 --> 08:53.892
[SPEAKER_01]: And now we also start to see quirky exercise equipment kind of coming into the home.
08:53.972 --> 08:57.457
[SPEAKER_01]: So now it's not just our jumping jacks and situps and that kind of thing.
08:57.497 --> 09:00.861
[SPEAKER_01]: We're seeing like the machine.
09:00.841 --> 09:03.727
[SPEAKER_01]: that one of my mom's friends said the one that went around your butt.
09:03.787 --> 09:04.268
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
09:04.288 --> 09:05.511
[SPEAKER_01]: And it shook you like this.
09:06.433 --> 09:06.653
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
09:06.673 --> 09:07.655
[SPEAKER_03]: Is that exercise?
09:07.695 --> 09:09.098
[SPEAKER_03]: What are you just checking that?
09:09.118 --> 09:09.619
[SPEAKER_01]: That's bad.
09:09.639 --> 09:10.902
[SPEAKER_01]: You're taking the cellulite.
09:10.922 --> 09:12.425
[SPEAKER_01]: It was to shake you cellulite off.
09:13.226 --> 09:16.453
[SPEAKER_01]: That looked so incredibly interesting to me.
09:16.674 --> 09:18.277
[SPEAKER_01]: But I was just kind of dangerous.
09:18.317 --> 09:20.481
[SPEAKER_01]: And I used to think like, what if it slipped in?
09:20.882 --> 09:21.263
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
09:21.243 --> 09:22.364
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so there was that.
09:23.025 --> 09:32.397
[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know if you guys remember, I'm sure I've shared the story, but I distinctly remember in our home, we had this contraption that hooked on to the dorn off.
09:32.417 --> 09:33.118
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yes, yes.
09:33.178 --> 09:39.827
[SPEAKER_01]: And when I realized, yeah, now it was like Pilates that didn't get Pilates that could definitely, definitely was that.
09:40.628 --> 09:46.896
[SPEAKER_01]: And I shared the story, if not on the podcast, definitely in writing group, because there was one Christmas.
09:46.876 --> 09:51.281
[SPEAKER_01]: that my dad bought one for my mom and showed it to me.
09:51.301 --> 09:54.204
[SPEAKER_01]: And guess what my mom bought one for my dad for Christmas.
09:54.684 --> 09:59.690
[SPEAKER_01]: They both showed me TV exactly, but also keep this a secret.
09:59.930 --> 10:00.831
[SPEAKER_01]: Don't tell your mom.
10:00.851 --> 10:01.572
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, what I got.
10:02.172 --> 10:03.073
[SPEAKER_01]: Look, keep this a secret.
10:03.093 --> 10:03.994
[SPEAKER_01]: Don't tell your dad.
10:04.675 --> 10:06.757
[SPEAKER_01]: You guys, that was terrible.
10:06.817 --> 10:07.878
[SPEAKER_01]: I do do a little kid.
10:08.019 --> 10:14.065
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like I held this and I thought should I tell one of them because they
10:14.399 --> 10:16.727
[SPEAKER_01]: But I do remember, I don't know what we did.
10:16.767 --> 10:19.076
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I'd never sent anything at my mom, probably returned it.
10:19.377 --> 10:21.745
[SPEAKER_01]: It was at the S, C, non-TV, I owe it life.
10:21.765 --> 10:21.926
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
10:22.086 --> 10:23.712
[SPEAKER_01]: C, V, all greens are some things.
10:23.732 --> 10:24.595
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
10:24.912 --> 10:29.018
[SPEAKER_03]: And the pulley thing, the pulley thing on the door knob, that's Jack LaLaine, he made that.
10:29.659 --> 10:33.584
[SPEAKER_03]: Although I never could you figure out how to do the pulley door knob thing.
10:33.624 --> 10:37.290
[SPEAKER_03]: My brother and I remember we'd were putting like or it's relupping in on our foot.
10:37.310 --> 10:39.192
[SPEAKER_03]: We just did not know we were supposed to do that.
10:39.212 --> 10:47.985
[SPEAKER_01]: I think part of it is that, you know, you could have just it somehow for your height, but we were so probably short compared to our parents that there was probably a lot of extra stuff.
10:48.005 --> 10:48.766
[SPEAKER_01]: Did you stand?
10:48.906 --> 10:50.128
[SPEAKER_01]: I thought we were lying down.
10:50.588 --> 10:52.071
[SPEAKER_01]: You could do a lot of things.
10:52.091 --> 10:52.331
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
10:52.691 --> 10:54.514
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you could lie down.
10:54.494 --> 10:54.855
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
10:55.355 --> 10:57.158
[SPEAKER_02]: Do you guys remember the one in the 70s?
10:57.178 --> 10:59.582
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, it was just called a slant board.
10:59.622 --> 11:03.649
[SPEAKER_02]: And it just laid, it was just a board that was at an incline.
11:03.729 --> 11:09.298
[SPEAKER_02]: And you laid with your head back, so the blood rushed to your head, much like the ones that then flipped.
11:09.578 --> 11:13.144
[SPEAKER_02]: Do you guys remember the ones that you would get in and then it would flip you upside down?
11:13.124 --> 11:14.927
[SPEAKER_02]: No, are you kidding?
11:14.967 --> 11:15.609
[SPEAKER_01]: What is this?
11:15.729 --> 11:19.636
[SPEAKER_02]: I have a message that was on like an episode of like Charlie's angels or something.
11:19.676 --> 11:27.851
[SPEAKER_02]: She's in it and it goes upside down So there was the thing where you could hook yourself and hang up upside down from like your door right like that bar that went across.
11:28.051 --> 11:28.973
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah
11:28.953 --> 11:48.278
[SPEAKER_02]: But then there was the board that you you stood up against almost like you're you know you're getting like strapped on to a board and then the whole thing tips so you're upside down But ours in our house was just called a slam board and it just looked like it just a board that was up at an angle And you lay down on it with your head at the floor level and your feet up
11:48.258 --> 11:50.060
[SPEAKER_02]: And then that's supposed to be really good for you.
11:50.080 --> 11:57.270
[SPEAKER_02]: And there was that whole thing in the 70s where being upside down was good for you and good for your circulation and all the more being upside down.
11:57.290 --> 11:58.812
[SPEAKER_02]: Got it all about being upside down.
11:58.832 --> 11:58.932
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
11:58.952 --> 11:59.372
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
11:59.392 --> 12:00.274
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to put that in.
12:00.314 --> 12:05.701
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to find this old, all this old exercise of the man and put in social media this week.
12:05.721 --> 12:05.981
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
12:06.001 --> 12:10.046
[SPEAKER_01]: You guys were now or coming up to the late 70s and all the ingredients were in place.
12:10.166 --> 12:10.487
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
12:10.687 --> 12:11.849
[SPEAKER_01]: We have more leisure time.
12:12.429 --> 12:17.556
[SPEAKER_01]: There's more media access with TVs and soon the VCR is going to be coming.
12:18.093 --> 12:29.165
[SPEAKER_01]: we have a growing focus on appearance and self-improvement and weight and also a culture that was ready to turn anything in entertainment so that's true.
12:29.565 --> 12:35.432
[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome the 80s, the technology, the bold personalities and the love of Atom Fitness.
12:35.512 --> 12:36.373
[SPEAKER_01]: It didn't just grow.
12:36.853 --> 12:45.062
[SPEAKER_01]: It absolutely exploded into a full-blown pop culture phenomenon and that's what we're going to chat about today, 80s.
12:45.532 --> 12:45.913
[SPEAKER_01]: So.
12:46.233 --> 12:51.200
[SPEAKER_03]: And it really was, you know, to your point about about Jacqueline, this really was about women.
12:51.420 --> 12:57.127
[SPEAKER_03]: It's like when when it's exploding in the 80s, you know, it's doing it's one thing doing your pulley thing at home, mom.
12:57.828 --> 13:08.923
[SPEAKER_03]: But it's another to have this explosion in the 80s because prior to that exercise or fitness was really about men and sweat suits lifting weights.
13:08.903 --> 13:10.326
[SPEAKER_03]: That's what fitness was.
13:10.566 --> 13:13.492
[SPEAKER_03]: And suddenly in the 80s, it did on look like that anymore.
13:13.512 --> 13:15.696
[SPEAKER_03]: It was completely an utterly different.
13:16.418 --> 13:16.979
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
13:17.179 --> 13:23.732
[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, and I think the way that it wove itself into pop culture, it was everywhere.
13:23.752 --> 13:26.257
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, the cover of our, of 17 magazine.
13:26.357 --> 13:29.443
[SPEAKER_01]: It was playing from our television sets.
13:29.423 --> 13:42.201
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I shared that my roommate in college, 1983, had the LP of somebody we're going to talk about in just a minute, pre her video tape and like six or seven of us would be in our dorm room.
13:42.681 --> 13:58.283
[SPEAKER_01]: Propped up the album because the gatefold had the moves on the inside, so I probably was really close to that train and doing what she was saying on the record.
13:58.263 --> 14:03.190
[SPEAKER_02]: I just passed up another album of that at record store in our neighborhood.
14:03.210 --> 14:08.276
[SPEAKER_02]: We have a little final store right in our neighborhood and I almost bought it and there's I can know it's just going to sit around.
14:08.297 --> 14:15.026
[SPEAKER_02]: But anyway, Jane Fonda's 1982 workout her VHS.
14:15.046 --> 14:20.012
[SPEAKER_02]: That was the first non-theatrical home video to top sales charts.
14:20.032 --> 14:27.983
[SPEAKER_02]: And it's credited with single-handedly accelerating.
14:27.963 --> 14:39.892
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, because it said that before her workout tape, the VCR was really primarily a luxury item, but, oh yeah, but her tape just prompted this boom, right?
14:40.012 --> 14:43.120
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, come on, workout in the privacy of your own den.
14:43.100 --> 14:45.284
[SPEAKER_02]: with the Jan Fonda TV really.
14:45.565 --> 14:52.978
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I was last week's years old when I discovered the reason Jan Fonda created her workout and it's actually really obvious.
14:53.018 --> 14:53.860
[SPEAKER_02]: I feel kind of dumb now.
14:54.902 --> 15:00.973
[SPEAKER_02]: Jan created the aerobics workout primarily to fund her political activism.
15:00.953 --> 15:02.334
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my God.
15:02.374 --> 15:03.155
[SPEAKER_02]: Really?
15:03.175 --> 15:03.355
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh.
15:04.056 --> 15:19.129
[SPEAKER_02]: In the late 70s, she and her then husband who was also an activist, Tom Hayden, they needed a sustainable source of revenue for their political action committee, which was called the campaign for economic democracy, CED.
15:20.030 --> 15:29.779
[SPEAKER_02]: And she considered other businesses to help raise this money, but then she was like, oh my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
15:30.653 --> 15:35.582
[SPEAKER_02]: after she fractured a bone in her foot in 1978 while filming the China syndrome.
15:35.943 --> 15:42.936
[SPEAKER_02]: And that ended her ability to practice ballet, which really had been her primary form of exercise, her whole life until then.
15:43.917 --> 15:47.464
[SPEAKER_02]: And so she had started
15:47.444 --> 15:50.592
[SPEAKER_02]: really educating herself on other ways of fitness.
15:50.752 --> 15:55.002
[SPEAKER_02]: So she had this knowledge and she thought, I'm just going to try this.
15:55.063 --> 15:55.945
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to share this.
15:56.105 --> 15:57.990
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it makes sense, right?
15:58.250 --> 15:58.651
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
15:58.671 --> 16:04.626
[SPEAKER_02]: And that Jane found to work out and those tapes revolutionized fitness.
16:04.606 --> 16:06.789
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, women are moms, right?
16:06.909 --> 16:09.152
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know about your guys' moms, but my mom, for sure.
16:09.292 --> 16:13.217
[SPEAKER_02]: Our moms, they were empowered, like, that never been before.
16:13.398 --> 16:22.630
[SPEAKER_02]: And let's also remember that before 1982, before her 1982 video, the fitness industry was really male- was a male-dominated world.
16:22.690 --> 16:27.797
[SPEAKER_02]: Chris, I'm kind of like, you just said, it was mostly things like bodybuilding and boxing.
16:28.297 --> 16:31.862
[SPEAKER_02]: But Jane found us workout was designed for women.
16:31.842 --> 16:42.793
[SPEAKER_03]: And then when you said that she was before she was a ballet dancer, all of a sudden the world opened up because the thing that is happening in the 80s is that it's becoming a dance culture.
16:42.953 --> 16:46.864
[SPEAKER_03]: And so did that come from Jane Fonda or
16:46.844 --> 16:48.707
[SPEAKER_01]: is that just a coincidence?
16:48.727 --> 16:50.831
[SPEAKER_01]: I think, you know, it's kind of that kind of a thing.
16:50.851 --> 16:51.492
[SPEAKER_01]: It's that right thing.
16:51.672 --> 16:51.772
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
16:51.952 --> 16:57.642
[SPEAKER_01]: This synchronicity of whatever, like, you know, that of disco, because that was kind of already an existence.
16:57.662 --> 17:04.854
[SPEAKER_01]: So we're noticing dancing in different ways where, I mean, I'm taking disco lessons in the late semis and stuff.
17:04.874 --> 17:09.882
[SPEAKER_01]: So to think like, oh, I can do this and you know, get a workout, right?
17:09.862 --> 17:20.638
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, that work out fundamentally rewired how women in the 80s viewed their bodies to like before the 80s the primary goal of women's fitness was to reduce.
17:21.078 --> 17:23.241
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, right tab, you know, the cut.
17:23.261 --> 17:23.361
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
17:23.381 --> 17:25.204
[SPEAKER_02]: Meas and let us leave diet and whatever.
17:25.224 --> 17:27.567
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't even say that like I'm reducing.
17:28.028 --> 17:28.369
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
17:28.489 --> 17:29.931
[SPEAKER_02]: It was have that I'm reducing.
17:30.532 --> 17:32.815
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, and basically it was.
17:33.233 --> 17:47.341
[SPEAKER_02]: to become the idea was to become smaller through dieting and like Calusthenics, you know, remember that it's the, I love the episode of Mary Tyler Moore, where she wrote a comes in and again, we're supposed to believe Rota's fat and needs to lose weight.
17:47.381 --> 17:54.735
[SPEAKER_02]: She's not, but Mary's like in her little Leigh-a-Tard and she's doing the like, bend down, touch her, touch her, and let's tell the others, don't touch her, and let's tell the others, don't touch her, yeah.
17:54.715 --> 18:13.450
[SPEAKER_02]: So you do these little light calisthenics, but Jane found a shifted that narrative toward refining and creating visible strength, like being firm and toned, became the toning and she, yeah, she normalized the idea that women could and should push their bodies to the point of physical exertion.
18:13.430 --> 18:33.700
[SPEAKER_03]: feel the burn right feel the burn ladies did she start feel the burn I mean that was so real I feel yeah yeah yeah and they're and we used I think I've told you this we used to call it Jane on cocaine because it was this constant pushing pushing pushing and going faster if you can do it more more more more more more more more more yeah
18:33.680 --> 18:36.023
[SPEAKER_03]: and you're just exhausted and it feels horrible.
18:36.463 --> 18:43.652
[SPEAKER_03]: But the thing that is, this movement started, that was also different from before, is that it also came with Woohoo's.
18:43.913 --> 18:45.214
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, woohoo!
18:45.354 --> 18:45.875
[SPEAKER_03]: Woohoo!
18:45.895 --> 18:47.597
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you can do it, look at you.
18:47.858 --> 18:51.342
[SPEAKER_03]: You can have one more, three more, two more did it.
18:51.622 --> 18:53.304
[SPEAKER_03]: And you're not even in the same room.
18:53.344 --> 18:54.726
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, you can't see me.
18:54.706 --> 18:58.473
[SPEAKER_03]: I could be sitting on the couch, but that was Jane Fonda.
18:58.553 --> 19:00.096
[SPEAKER_03]: She was telling us we could do it.
19:00.477 --> 19:06.388
[SPEAKER_03]: And in the male dominated previous life of fitness, it was probably a little more domineering than that.
19:06.408 --> 19:07.831
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm guessing.
19:07.851 --> 19:12.680
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I don't know if there really was something like that where the men would be going.
19:12.720 --> 19:13.682
[SPEAKER_02]: Woohoo, good job.
19:13.742 --> 19:17.068
[SPEAKER_02]: Tell like there would be no.
19:17.048 --> 19:22.816
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, on the flip side of all of that is, I mean, there was this empowering message of strength.
19:23.597 --> 19:29.765
[SPEAKER_02]: But those videos also reinforced an extremely narrow and often really unattainable beauty standard.
19:29.925 --> 19:30.787
[SPEAKER_02]: Think about it, you guys.
19:31.047 --> 19:35.433
[SPEAKER_02]: All her instructors were almost exclusively thin, white, and able-bodied.
19:36.034 --> 19:40.400
[SPEAKER_02]: And that set of standard that many women couldn't reach no matter how much burn they felt.
19:40.880 --> 19:45.807
[SPEAKER_02]: So there was, it was kind of a double-edged sword a little bit.
19:45.787 --> 19:53.076
[SPEAKER_02]: But these workouts, not only did they empower, mostly, I would say for the most part, women, they legitimized fitness as a career.
19:53.116 --> 19:54.177
[SPEAKER_02]: Truly.
19:54.197 --> 20:06.972
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, versus has helped turn fitness into a viable professional industry for dancers and instructors, spawning countless copycat celebrity videos and like jazzer size, things like that.
20:07.133 --> 20:09.195
[SPEAKER_03]: Jazzer size, yeah.
20:09.175 --> 20:09.615
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
20:09.655 --> 20:11.237
[SPEAKER_03]: That was my first job out of college.
20:11.678 --> 20:12.118
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
20:12.138 --> 20:13.079
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it was 1990.
20:13.119 --> 20:14.280
[SPEAKER_03]: So there were no other jobs.
20:14.300 --> 20:15.822
[SPEAKER_03]: So I became in a Rolex and start.
20:15.842 --> 20:16.162
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
20:16.563 --> 20:16.683
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
20:17.043 --> 20:23.310
[SPEAKER_02]: So let's go through the numbers across the series of the 22 to 29 workout videos.
20:23.730 --> 20:26.233
[SPEAKER_02]: I could never get a definite answer on how many.
20:26.273 --> 20:31.118
[SPEAKER_02]: But these were all released between 1982 all the way up to 1995.
20:31.578 --> 20:35.402
[SPEAKER_02]: She sold over 17 million copies worldwide.
20:35.382 --> 20:52.943
[SPEAKER_02]: That original 1982 tape entered the Billboard sales chart at number 23 and reached the top four within a month where it stayed for three years and spent a total of 145 weeks on the chart just by 1985.
20:52.963 --> 20:53.464
[SPEAKER_02]: Wow.
20:54.665 --> 20:55.386
[SPEAKER_02]: Wow.
20:55.767 --> 21:05.338
[SPEAKER_02]: And in its first year, that tape sold over 200,000 units, which was
21:08.474 --> 21:09.735
[SPEAKER_02]: It's stuck on.
21:09.755 --> 21:10.356
[SPEAKER_02]: It's right.
21:10.496 --> 21:11.877
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
21:11.997 --> 21:12.298
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
21:12.358 --> 21:19.665
[SPEAKER_02]: And listen to the financial impact of this by 1989, the combined value of her workout tapes and books was estimated at $35 million.
21:20.485 --> 21:21.166
[SPEAKER_02]: That was by 1989.
21:21.787 --> 21:34.819
[SPEAKER_02]: And by 1988, Fonda had donated approximately $10 million from her workout profits to her political organization, the campaign for economic democracy.
21:34.799 --> 21:43.031
[SPEAKER_02]: So her why from the very beginning paid off tremendously because 82 was that tape.
21:43.051 --> 21:50.141
[SPEAKER_02]: So let's just say in 10 year and I don't know how long it took her to come up with all of it and film it all.
21:50.381 --> 22:03.540
[SPEAKER_02]: But let's just say within like eight years, she was able to donate $10 million from this
22:03.723 --> 22:15.381
[SPEAKER_01]: How smart is that though, like she saw this writing on the wall in a way that, let's just say it, I a lot, mended and she, you know, screwed, you're screwed, mm-hmm.
22:15.761 --> 22:18.686
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then she did it with it was like mission oriented.
22:19.067 --> 22:27.840
[SPEAKER_03]: I do feel a little bit bad because we now know that at the time she was doing those videos, and when you talked about the, um, the.
22:29.035 --> 22:31.259
[SPEAKER_03]: the beauty standards that it was encouraging.
22:31.640 --> 22:37.069
[SPEAKER_03]: And I think her intentions were pure, but there was that difficult aspect of what we're supposed to look like.
22:37.089 --> 22:41.618
[SPEAKER_03]: And now we know, of course, in retrospect, that she was suffering from an eating disorder at the time, too.
22:42.299 --> 22:45.525
[SPEAKER_03]: So it kind of muddies those waters, right?
22:45.905 --> 22:50.233
[SPEAKER_03]: Even though we know completely that it was, it was empowering, it was incredibly empowering.
22:50.213 --> 22:52.396
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it can be both and it can be both.
22:52.476 --> 23:10.580
[SPEAKER_02]: I think too, the way it all could be fixed is, and it is what they do now in a lot of workout videos, is that you want to see the people doing it standing behind you, you want all body sizes and types, you want, you want ethnicity, you want people who everybody can identify with, and they didn't have that.
23:10.600 --> 23:16.247
[SPEAKER_02]: I watched some of her old workout tapes, I'm just snips of on YouTube, in preparation for this.
23:16.467 --> 23:17.048
[SPEAKER_02]: And
23:17.028 --> 23:19.275
[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody was pretty much the same size.
23:19.355 --> 23:20.719
[SPEAKER_02]: There was a little bit of a difference.
23:20.799 --> 23:25.233
[SPEAKER_02]: However, having said that, you're still motivating.
23:25.273 --> 23:28.202
[SPEAKER_02]: You might be motivating these people too.
23:29.093 --> 23:33.563
[SPEAKER_02]: feel like they want to look like that, although sometimes they want to be an aspirational.
23:33.583 --> 23:35.187
[SPEAKER_01]: So aspirational, I like that better.
23:35.487 --> 23:39.777
[SPEAKER_02]: Because sometimes I mean, I can work out five days a week.
23:39.797 --> 23:40.999
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm never going to look like that.
23:41.120 --> 23:42.864
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, body types are body types, right?
23:42.964 --> 23:47.153
[SPEAKER_02]: But at least this was making women,
23:47.133 --> 23:53.571
[SPEAKER_02]: Try for it in the privacy of your own home, which ultimately is just is nothing but good for your health.
23:53.872 --> 24:00.310
[SPEAKER_02]: So even if you're going, it might be wrecking yourself a steam, but it's good for your heart.
24:01.453 --> 24:02.155
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, there's
24:02.135 --> 24:07.100
[SPEAKER_02]: So many pros and cons, I mean, there's definitely cons to this as far as self-imagine, things like that.
24:07.420 --> 24:12.104
[SPEAKER_02]: But then the big pro is what it's doing for your health, but at the same time.
24:12.144 --> 24:16.549
[SPEAKER_01]: I think about it for if you look at it purely through a Gen X lens.
24:16.989 --> 24:20.352
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the 80s, everything was so aspirational for us.
24:20.372 --> 24:24.716
[SPEAKER_01]: Like it was the kind of jobs we wanted to have and the lifestyle we wanted to lead.
24:24.796 --> 24:30.081
[SPEAKER_01]: And so anything seemed possible, at least, for me, like that did not seem unattainable.
24:30.101 --> 24:32.023
[SPEAKER_01]: Those women that were standing behind her.
24:32.003 --> 24:33.746
[SPEAKER_03]: That seemed like that was possible.
24:33.906 --> 24:35.148
[SPEAKER_01]: That not only was possible.
24:35.168 --> 24:35.628
[SPEAKER_01]: It did for me.
24:35.648 --> 24:36.590
[SPEAKER_01]: It should be.
24:36.810 --> 24:38.012
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, sadly.
24:38.032 --> 24:38.953
[SPEAKER_03]: That was the team.
24:39.474 --> 24:39.734
[SPEAKER_02]: I was.
24:40.135 --> 24:41.938
[SPEAKER_02]: I was a human.
24:41.998 --> 24:42.799
[SPEAKER_01]: A grown one.
24:42.819 --> 24:44.021
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I would have been different.
24:44.041 --> 24:51.632
[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm saying, like, when you were 18, 19 and doing whatever we were doing, whether it was Jane Fonda or you were going to an aerobics class or whatever.
24:51.612 --> 24:55.522
[SPEAKER_01]: I think we were aspiring to look like the instructor.
24:55.542 --> 24:56.724
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
24:56.745 --> 25:04.624
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm embarrassed to say I wouldn't have taken a class probably by somebody that didn't have the that's my aspirational body type.
25:05.426 --> 25:06.769
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's the consciousness.
25:06.749 --> 25:11.454
[SPEAKER_01]: but I was young and everybody was telling me that's what I supposed to be doing out.
25:11.474 --> 25:12.975
[SPEAKER_03]: And that was the time in which we lived.
25:12.995 --> 25:18.621
[SPEAKER_03]: And if Jane found it's the first one to do it, she's just operating by entertainment standards, right?
25:18.881 --> 25:28.110
[SPEAKER_03]: Even in the entertainment industry today, they wouldn't be like, we need three white people and three black people and two fat people and two skinny people.
25:28.590 --> 25:30.912
[SPEAKER_03]: Now, related ability was not a thing back then.
25:30.993 --> 25:32.554
[SPEAKER_03]: It was only entertainment.
25:32.534 --> 25:42.295
[SPEAKER_03]: It was only entertainment until something really big happened after Jane fond of with her aspirational skinny models because she wasn't the only celebrity that we were sweating with.
25:42.876 --> 25:48.889
[SPEAKER_03]: Richard Simmons was probably the real successor to Jack LaLaine.
25:48.869 --> 25:50.511
[SPEAKER_03]: quite literally Jacqueline.
25:50.952 --> 25:56.118
[SPEAKER_03]: And his way of being aspirational was the opposite of how Jane Fonda was doing it.
25:56.579 --> 26:00.323
[SPEAKER_03]: So Jacqueline and Richard Simmons have very similar stories.
26:00.464 --> 26:10.256
[SPEAKER_03]: And there's actually, this is my opinion, but I think that there is no way that Richard Simmons wasn't by impacted by his story in some way, because Jacqueline was the first in 1951.
26:11.437 --> 26:15.062
[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm going to go out on the limb and say that Richard Simmons was the second.
26:15.042 --> 26:16.886
[SPEAKER_03]: Jane found it was in a different category.
26:17.127 --> 26:17.889
[SPEAKER_03]: It was a different thing.
26:17.909 --> 26:22.359
[SPEAKER_02]: He said, I used to see him talk about Jacqueline when he would be on open stuff.
26:22.379 --> 26:22.860
[SPEAKER_02]: Come from.
26:22.880 --> 26:24.103
[SPEAKER_02]: So, yes.
26:24.625 --> 26:24.925
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
26:25.246 --> 26:27.792
[SPEAKER_03]: Because Jacqueline was a fat kid.
26:28.093 --> 26:29.356
[SPEAKER_03]: He was a self-descript.
26:29.376 --> 26:30.739
[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm using the word fat people.
26:30.719 --> 26:34.004
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm just going to say the word fat because people are trying to own the word fat again.
26:34.024 --> 26:35.286
[SPEAKER_03]: We're not going to use euphemisms.
26:35.306 --> 26:37.129
[SPEAKER_03]: These are the words that Richard Simmons used.
26:37.389 --> 26:39.031
[SPEAKER_03]: These are the words that Jacqueline used.
26:39.132 --> 26:40.113
[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm going to use them.
26:41.054 --> 26:45.301
[SPEAKER_03]: So Jacqueline was a self-described sugarholic who turned his life around with fitness and nutrition.
26:45.641 --> 26:48.205
[SPEAKER_03]: Guess who else became who he was?
26:48.185 --> 26:52.333
[SPEAKER_03]: because he was a fat kid who turned his life around with fitness and nutrition.
26:52.633 --> 26:53.755
[SPEAKER_03]: That would be Richard Simmons.
26:54.156 --> 27:01.991
[SPEAKER_03]: And we all know his backstory of being bullied and how that motivated him to adopt a new lifestyle and then bring that to millions of people.
27:02.672 --> 27:07.341
[SPEAKER_03]: And part of this success is that his earnestness was so intense.
27:07.321 --> 27:13.390
[SPEAKER_03]: that you could actually still see that bullied kid in him that he was trying to overcome, right?
27:13.830 --> 27:16.334
[SPEAKER_03]: So you truly believe that miracles could happen.
27:16.694 --> 27:20.099
[SPEAKER_03]: There was no pressure to be cool in a Richard Simmons scenario.
27:20.560 --> 27:26.628
[SPEAKER_03]: You could see that happiness could be yours if you could just do a few more donkey kicks with Richard Simmons.
27:27.129 --> 27:32.316
[SPEAKER_03]: And that's where he was the opposite of Jane Fonda where he did amp up the related ability.
27:32.296 --> 27:37.587
[SPEAKER_03]: So just like Jacqueline, Richard Simmons opened his own eponymous fitness studio.
27:37.868 --> 27:47.388
[SPEAKER_03]: Richard Simmons opened his first studio called Salimans in Beverly Hills in 1975, and his whole purpose in doing so was to help people like him.
27:47.829 --> 27:52.819
[SPEAKER_03]: Because in those days, as we've talked about before, gyms were for people who were already fit.
27:53.440 --> 27:55.765
[SPEAKER_03]: If you were a fat person, you didn't go to a gym.
27:55.805 --> 28:05.585
[SPEAKER_03]: You wouldn't set, you wouldn't be seen in a place like that with all those fit people, but Richard Simmons wanted the people who wanted to get fit to be in his studio.
28:05.705 --> 28:07.068
[SPEAKER_03]: No one had ever done that before.
28:07.168 --> 28:10.234
[SPEAKER_03]: Plus sized women in a gym unheard of, forget about it.
28:10.602 --> 28:27.352
[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, so Richard Simmons was doing what Jacqueline did, but he was doing it in a way that created really a universal culture that rode the wave of music and fashion on pop culture and television and most importantly, positivity and joy, body positivity and joy.
28:27.832 --> 28:31.058
[SPEAKER_03]: So what Jacqueline did in his little corner of the world
28:31.038 --> 28:54.463
[SPEAKER_03]: Richard Simmons made into the actual world, like the whole world, and there's a really great article about Richard Simmons at grunge.com that was published just last year, just a few months after his death in 2024, and it says this is a quote, Richard Simmons truly earnestly, honestly, wanted to help humanity, but he knew that a little flash and entertainment went a long way.
28:54.443 --> 29:07.147
[SPEAKER_03]: For decades, the seemingly ageless and forever tireless Simmons yelled, danced, and encouraged his way through exercise classes at a studio on TV, and in his line of popular sweat to the oldies exercise videos.
29:07.728 --> 29:18.207
[SPEAKER_03]: Simmons certainly helped a lot of people, and while he may have been mocked for his over-the-top personality and skimpy tank tops and short shorts, he was nearly universally beloved.
29:18.946 --> 29:21.950
[SPEAKER_03]: I think that's really back in this.
29:21.971 --> 29:26.718
[SPEAKER_02]: What, what are the years where his workouts were soup, like sweating to the oldies and stuff?
29:26.778 --> 29:28.841
[SPEAKER_02]: What are the years that the oldies offer?
29:29.542 --> 29:32.807
[SPEAKER_03]: The timeline for it is the TV show came first.
29:32.867 --> 29:36.432
[SPEAKER_03]: That was on from 1980 until 1984.
29:36.412 --> 29:44.700
[SPEAKER_03]: And then what people were doing was they were recording on their VCR, the workout segment on the Richard Simmons show and doing it at home.
29:45.000 --> 29:49.325
[SPEAKER_03]: So after his TV show ended, he released, went to the oldies in 1988.
29:49.365 --> 29:51.246
[SPEAKER_03]: That's when it went to the oldies.
29:51.266 --> 30:01.396
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, that makes a lot of sense because the way I always viewed Richard Simmons is because you would always see the commercials for the sweat and the oldies tapes and stuff.
30:01.416 --> 30:02.217
[SPEAKER_04]: Hey there.
30:02.197 --> 30:13.052
[SPEAKER_04]: If me, Richard Simmons, listen, are you sick and tired of boring, look alike exercise videos with synthesized elevator music and a line-up of LeaTard class-deopard wives?
30:13.493 --> 30:17.719
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, if you are, honey, have I got the cure for you?
30:18.360 --> 30:22.165
[SPEAKER_04]: This is my brand-new aerobic workout tape to wet into the oldies.
30:22.746 --> 30:28.334
[SPEAKER_04]: And if you don't like having fun, ha ha ha ha ha!
30:28.354 --> 30:29.115
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, you've best not come in here!
30:29.095 --> 30:38.266
[SPEAKER_02]: and what you would see is him and front and behind him you would always see all the people doing the workout and I would say 90% of them were overweight, right?
30:38.707 --> 30:57.870
[SPEAKER_02]: So you almost had Jane Fonda with her, you know, earlier in the decade, with her very, you know, that very highlight, Leah Tards and the very thin, thin, you know, people and then you had Richard Simmons.
30:57.850 --> 31:01.314
[SPEAKER_02]: If I do Jane Fonda, I'm already fit or whatever.
31:01.434 --> 31:03.697
[SPEAKER_02]: If I'm a little overweight, I'm going to go with Richard Simmons.
31:03.797 --> 31:10.165
[SPEAKER_02]: But what I love about Richard Simmons, what he did, is he made all of these women, mostly.
31:10.185 --> 31:12.147
[SPEAKER_02]: But there were a lot of men who did his men too.
31:12.167 --> 31:12.908
[SPEAKER_02]: I remember.
31:13.028 --> 31:13.489
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
31:13.509 --> 31:13.729
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
31:13.749 --> 31:14.370
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah.
31:14.390 --> 31:15.712
[SPEAKER_02]: I can see them in my head.
31:16.132 --> 31:16.853
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, sorry.
31:16.933 --> 31:18.435
[SPEAKER_02]: I can see those commercials.
31:18.555 --> 31:19.436
[SPEAKER_02]: I can see the guy.
31:19.636 --> 31:25.984
[SPEAKER_02]: But what I love is that he made all of these overweight people feel
31:25.964 --> 31:43.367
[SPEAKER_02]: not just seen, but like they had a community and two that they could do it and that they could do it without ridicule and without feeling silly or whatever, even if they're doing it in their own home, because he had cruises and stuff like that where they would all gather.
31:43.387 --> 31:47.252
[SPEAKER_02]: They were entire cruises that were just sweating to the old.
31:47.272 --> 31:49.615
[SPEAKER_02]: These are just Richard Simmons cruises and it was all exercise.
31:49.875 --> 31:54.942
[SPEAKER_02]: I just love that he helped them feel seen and helped them feel like they had a community.
31:54.922 --> 32:01.250
[SPEAKER_03]: He was 100% about the person who doesn't feel comfortable going to Jane find a studio.
32:01.270 --> 32:02.411
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's put it away.
32:02.551 --> 32:03.212
[SPEAKER_00]: That's true.
32:03.232 --> 32:03.352
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
32:03.733 --> 32:04.994
[SPEAKER_03]: These people wouldn't go there.
32:05.275 --> 32:08.939
[SPEAKER_03]: And he targeted people who would feel self-conscious going to a gym.
32:09.240 --> 32:14.787
[SPEAKER_03]: So that could be overweight people or it could be older people because he used in sweat to the oldies.
32:15.107 --> 32:18.031
[SPEAKER_03]: He very on purpose used oldies songs for a reason.
32:18.371 --> 32:21.655
[SPEAKER_03]: He was attracting a crowd who no longer felt seen.
32:21.635 --> 32:28.624
[SPEAKER_03]: People who might go to an aerobics class in a gym and not know any of the songs and they wouldn't wreck it like it's not their music.
32:28.964 --> 32:34.131
[SPEAKER_03]: People who thought they were too old to exercise or too weak and it was too late for them.
32:34.611 --> 32:40.299
[SPEAKER_03]: But he also made it about capturing something that you may have either lost or missed out on.
32:40.699 --> 32:49.971
[SPEAKER_03]: So the videos were set in like a high school gym and he would say this is the chance to dance at the high school prom you always dreamed of.
32:49.951 --> 32:54.296
[SPEAKER_03]: And you got the feeling that it was the prom that maybe he missed also.
32:54.817 --> 33:02.627
[SPEAKER_03]: It was as if he understood your pain and he had the same pain, which is ironic because he was pure joy.
33:02.667 --> 33:06.391
[SPEAKER_03]: But it's very much this joy that comes from pain, right?
33:06.451 --> 33:11.217
[SPEAKER_03]: He was trying to who's trying to help people in pain find some joy.
33:11.197 --> 33:15.082
[SPEAKER_01]: on that point of joy for me, it was fun.
33:15.262 --> 33:17.645
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you could laugh when you were doing Richard Simmons.
33:17.745 --> 33:22.792
[SPEAKER_01]: And even if you messed up and you were just in your house doing it, like, that was okay.
33:23.012 --> 33:29.741
[SPEAKER_01]: That kind of felt like part of it where the Jane Fonda aspect of it was much more, it was just serious.
33:30.061 --> 33:32.624
[SPEAKER_01]: And if I didn't get it right, I felt stupid.
33:32.865 --> 33:34.627
[SPEAKER_01]: And remember, she was a ballet dancer too.
33:34.667 --> 33:39.313
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's probably a great deal of precision and grace, which I was.
33:39.293 --> 33:56.425
[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, I just loved the fun and affability that he had and it's like let's just do this together I loved it because I want I always I never did it I never like ordered the tapes, but I always wanted to because I loved that music I wanted to work that scene real fun to me to work out to those songs
33:56.405 --> 34:05.455
[SPEAKER_03]: it was such a brilliant move on his part and remember this the music is part of what is differentiating this era from the era that came before.
34:05.535 --> 34:08.639
[SPEAKER_03]: Jack Lilland didn't have music, he just counted your jumping jacks.
34:09.119 --> 34:17.929
[SPEAKER_03]: That's it and all of a sudden we have music and with Richard Simmons he's choosing the music very carefully based on who he's talking to.
34:18.290 --> 34:20.472
[SPEAKER_03]: Who do I want to make feel welcome here?
34:20.452 --> 34:31.324
[SPEAKER_03]: As I said before, his TV show was on from 1980 until 1984, and I just have to wonder, if we had to ask where the fitness craze came from in the early 80s.
34:31.364 --> 34:34.628
[SPEAKER_03]: This is very, it's a very chicken or the egg question.
34:35.189 --> 34:39.754
[SPEAKER_03]: Did the craze create Richard Simmons or did Richard Simmons create the craze?
34:39.934 --> 34:40.775
[SPEAKER_03]: It's hard to say.
34:41.195 --> 34:49.665
[SPEAKER_03]: But if you look at when everything began, Jane Fonda and everything else that we're going to talk about coming up,
34:49.645 --> 34:51.928
[SPEAKER_03]: Richard Simmons started his show in 1980.
34:52.709 --> 34:59.698
[SPEAKER_03]: You see a lot of 1981, 1982, and he was, I just have a feeling that maybe he lit the fire.
34:59.738 --> 35:01.981
[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe some things were brewing.
35:02.021 --> 35:08.430
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, and he didn't come from nothing, but I feel like he lit the fire.
35:08.410 --> 35:13.096
[SPEAKER_03]: for the culture out there at large for the entire thing.
35:13.517 --> 35:18.844
[SPEAKER_03]: So Richard Simmons became famous not just from his own show and from his own videos, but he was everywhere.
35:18.864 --> 35:20.146
[SPEAKER_03]: He was absolutely everywhere.
35:20.506 --> 35:32.342
[SPEAKER_03]: He actually got his start on the Regis film and show in LA, where right after he opened a studio because Regis wife went to a studio and was like,
35:32.322 --> 35:33.023
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, joy.
35:33.263 --> 35:33.924
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly.
35:33.944 --> 35:34.424
[SPEAKER_00]: Joy felt that.
35:34.444 --> 35:39.690
[SPEAKER_03]: People start realizing that this guy's a very magnetic and charismatic, and he's got a real message.
35:40.031 --> 35:43.315
[SPEAKER_03]: So then he was on real people, remember real people?
35:43.335 --> 35:43.435
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
35:43.455 --> 35:44.236
[SPEAKER_03]: With Byron Allen?
35:44.496 --> 35:45.557
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
35:45.597 --> 35:47.660
[SPEAKER_03]: They, and they, they're like, here's somebody at work.
35:47.720 --> 35:49.061
[SPEAKER_03]: His name is Richard Simmons.
35:49.081 --> 35:50.823
[SPEAKER_03]: He's got a gym called Slimins.
35:51.244 --> 35:56.269
[SPEAKER_03]: And this is the gym for the people who don't feel comfortable going to the other gym where people are already fit.
35:56.289 --> 35:57.611
[SPEAKER_03]: Then he gets his own show, of course.
35:57.931 --> 36:01.215
[SPEAKER_03]: But even during that time, he was so
36:01.195 --> 36:28.215
[SPEAKER_03]: television friendly I guess he was on TV constantly from general hospital and all my children to game shows dance fever so many late night appearances but he kept on going on TV forever and ever and ever until 2014 and 2014 it all stopped and he said I am done I am officially in retirement it turns out he was actually a very very shy and introverted person
36:28.195 --> 36:28.796
[SPEAKER_03]: I know.
36:28.816 --> 36:29.276
[SPEAKER_03]: I know.
36:30.057 --> 36:32.640
[SPEAKER_03]: So this was all of this gregariousness.
36:32.960 --> 36:35.603
[SPEAKER_03]: There was a real cost to have.
36:35.623 --> 36:37.184
[SPEAKER_03]: That was very exhausting.
36:37.745 --> 36:45.433
[SPEAKER_03]: And in his final interview, he said, here at home, I get up every day, and I help people because my work is very serious.
36:45.893 --> 36:48.416
[SPEAKER_03]: And what he meant, because he's not going out in the world.
36:48.436 --> 36:50.758
[SPEAKER_03]: He's not working in that sense anymore.
36:50.798 --> 36:53.241
[SPEAKER_03]: What he meant was that he personally answered,
36:53.221 --> 37:04.133
[SPEAKER_03]: at least 100 emails from fans every single day and he even made phone calls if he felt that it was warranted and even during the pandemic so this is not that long ago.
37:04.633 --> 37:21.051
[SPEAKER_03]: During the pandemic his YouTube channel started uploading archival exercise videos of him once again to help people stay fit while they were at home but get this this is just amazing this is so lines up with who we
37:21.588 --> 37:36.357
[SPEAKER_03]: They were loading these archival videos onto the YouTube channel because of overwhelming requests for Richard Simmons to somehow return to the small screen because people required the comfort of seeing Richard Simmons on the screen.
37:36.505 --> 37:43.055
[SPEAKER_03]: It was less about being able to work out at home and more about needing the comfort of the old Richard Simmons show.
37:43.936 --> 37:46.520
[SPEAKER_03]: So that just makes so much sense, right?
37:46.941 --> 37:48.403
[SPEAKER_03]: But this part really broke my heart.
37:48.623 --> 37:49.004
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, no.
37:49.204 --> 37:57.537
[SPEAKER_03]: He admitted that another reason that he retired from public life was because he was struggling with how his appearance was changing as he got older.
37:57.577 --> 38:00.080
[SPEAKER_03]: He wanted to, these are his words.
38:00.120 --> 38:04.487
[SPEAKER_03]: He wanted to be beautiful and he just didn't feel that he was anymore.
38:04.467 --> 38:08.193
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, that's that pain coming through again, right?
38:08.213 --> 38:08.373
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
38:08.714 --> 38:09.816
[SPEAKER_01]: It was always there.
38:09.976 --> 38:15.405
[SPEAKER_01]: It was always there, kind of running from it and then kind of having to sit with it.
38:16.106 --> 38:20.533
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and helping other people is what was probably treating his pain.
38:20.613 --> 38:26.863
[SPEAKER_03]: Helping other people feel beautiful was how he treated his own feelings of self-worth.
38:26.843 --> 38:30.407
[SPEAKER_03]: So just two days before his death, he gave an interview to people magazine.
38:30.427 --> 38:31.969
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, that alone is kind of crazy.
38:32.009 --> 38:33.030
[SPEAKER_03]: Two days before he died.
38:33.631 --> 38:38.856
[SPEAKER_03]: And he said, in sort of a melancholy way, he said, when I retired, I thought somebody else was going to take my place.
38:39.457 --> 38:44.783
[SPEAKER_03]: I thought that somebody would open up studios for people who needed to lose weight or didn't feel good about themselves.
38:45.163 --> 38:46.305
[SPEAKER_03]: But I haven't seen that.
38:46.765 --> 38:50.269
[SPEAKER_03]: And then he added, I mean, there's always been places for fit people.
38:51.869 --> 38:53.452
[SPEAKER_03]: That's his whole mission right there.
38:53.492 --> 39:01.125
[SPEAKER_03]: The studio, the tapes, the TV shows, are all for the people who don't feel comfortable.
39:02.026 --> 39:03.930
[SPEAKER_03]: Going to a place where everybody is fit.
39:04.851 --> 39:06.294
[SPEAKER_03]: All right, the treasure simmons.
39:06.474 --> 39:06.875
[SPEAKER_03]: I know.
39:06.895 --> 39:07.456
[SPEAKER_03]: I know.
39:07.476 --> 39:15.970
[SPEAKER_05]: The treasure's soul who really did so much good for so many people.
39:17.620 --> 39:20.944
[SPEAKER_05]: That's it.
39:20.964 --> 39:22.686
[SPEAKER_05]: And again, five, six, seven, double, top.
39:22.706 --> 39:25.149
[SPEAKER_01]: There are some other names that you might remember.
39:25.710 --> 39:29.214
[SPEAKER_01]: And I wanted to just float a few of these by you and ask if you remember.
39:29.535 --> 39:39.527
[SPEAKER_01]: And if you dance or buggyed or sweat to any of these people, like Ms. Denise Austin, do you guys remember Denise Austin?
39:39.768 --> 39:40.869
[SPEAKER_01]: She had a TV show.
39:40.989 --> 39:41.910
[SPEAKER_01]: She sure did.
39:41.950 --> 39:44.033
[SPEAKER_01]: She was kind of,
39:44.013 --> 39:59.108
[SPEAKER_01]: At least, when you think about Jane Fonda, who was a little bit more militant about what we were doing, did he just kind of seem like the girl next door, Joyful, upbeat, happy, and she was one of the first exercise fitness shows on ESPN.
39:59.128 --> 40:04.534
[SPEAKER_01]: So I forgot that ESPN used to, that was part of their line-up of shows.
40:04.574 --> 40:09.358
[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't just whatever it is now, but it was, there was another, well, I'll just bring him up.
40:09.398 --> 40:11.961
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, do you guys remember, I think it's,
40:11.941 --> 40:13.743
[SPEAKER_01]: Gia, no, how do I pronounce it?
40:13.783 --> 40:15.666
[SPEAKER_01]: Gila, gila, bodies in motion.
40:15.746 --> 40:17.428
[SPEAKER_01]: Gila, gila, gila, gila, gila.
40:17.448 --> 40:18.970
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I watched that one in motion.
40:18.990 --> 40:21.193
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
40:21.213 --> 40:23.355
[SPEAKER_01]: You kind of felt like you were a little bit in a while.
40:23.536 --> 40:24.977
[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, that was really fun.
40:24.997 --> 40:28.582
[SPEAKER_01]: So he was also, I mean, just yes, he has his personality.
40:28.602 --> 40:30.464
[SPEAKER_01]: I saw her name, but I couldn't tell you what it is, right?
40:30.484 --> 40:31.986
[SPEAKER_03]: I can't remember if she was beautiful.
40:32.126 --> 40:35.130
[SPEAKER_03]: And in front of the beach and everything, oh my god, I know.
40:35.110 --> 40:45.303
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and his show on ESPN was actually the longest running fitness program that they had, um, and they noticed that there was a real appetite for that kind of content for a while until they didn't obviously.
40:46.104 --> 40:47.766
[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, then do you remember Kathy Smith?
40:48.366 --> 40:48.747
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
40:48.767 --> 40:50.309
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm so she she didn't have a show.
40:50.349 --> 40:51.110
[SPEAKER_03]: Did she was that much?
40:51.190 --> 40:54.294
[SPEAKER_01]: She was, um, purely the video.
40:54.314 --> 40:58.699
[SPEAKER_01]: So you would often see her, um, commercials for her videos.
40:58.719 --> 41:05.067
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I feel like during soap opera time, especially very like the
41:05.047 --> 41:05.669
[SPEAKER_01]: market.
41:05.729 --> 41:07.855
[SPEAKER_01]: She's 70 for now.
41:08.015 --> 41:10.162
[SPEAKER_01]: And again, somebody that looks darn good.
41:10.182 --> 41:13.832
[SPEAKER_01]: She's still preaching and she's still practicing what she preaches.
41:14.113 --> 41:18.405
[SPEAKER_04]: We march four, three, two, and one, size, size, etc.
41:18.505 --> 41:19.107
[SPEAKER_04]: Back.
41:19.390 --> 41:27.824
[SPEAKER_01]: late 80s into early 90s, we get Susan powder and she is yelling at us, just stop that in sanity.
41:30.268 --> 41:41.706
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, that is all fresh, we are not doing that people, I am that my bus cut and you're going to listen to me and she just kind of really was ahead of her time in all of this.
41:41.746 --> 41:45.212
[SPEAKER_01]: Like she's saying this whole diet culture, get rid of it, stop that.
41:45.192 --> 41:46.936
[SPEAKER_01]: We need to do this for the right reason.
41:46.956 --> 41:48.641
[SPEAKER_03]: Sanity, I forgot about stopping.
41:48.781 --> 41:54.716
[SPEAKER_01]: She built a multi-million dollar movement and company very, very quickly.
41:54.736 --> 41:58.425
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, she just shot from here to there.
41:58.777 --> 42:12.297
[SPEAKER_01]: But what's really sad and I'm not going to be able to summarize this all really well, but I'm going to put a link to a documentary last year that came out about Susan powder because just as quickly as she rose, she got something happened.
42:12.597 --> 42:13.839
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, she was just going.
42:13.939 --> 42:16.002
[SPEAKER_01]: It was one of those money somehow.
42:16.082 --> 42:21.510
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, she did because sadly there were a lot of men who managed her money and
42:21.490 --> 42:32.650
[SPEAKER_01]: kind of took advantage of her and the industry, certain industries weren't really a fan of her message of this message of eating right, of she was kind of a food's movement.
42:32.690 --> 42:34.313
[SPEAKER_01]: She didn't want you eating snack wells.
42:34.874 --> 42:36.617
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and yeah, all that money.
42:37.058 --> 42:37.779
[SPEAKER_01]: She didn't see it.
42:37.899 --> 42:38.841
[SPEAKER_01]: She didn't have it.
42:39.057 --> 42:46.670
[SPEAKER_01]: and one of the sadder things in this documentary where they're basically going to try to find you're like, what happened to Susan Powder?
42:48.073 --> 42:54.484
[SPEAKER_01]: And they have a scene where she is an Uber driver and she's driving, she's delivering
42:54.464 --> 43:00.679
[SPEAKER_01]: food, she's delivering fast food to people, you know, as part of her to make money to make ends meet.
43:01.160 --> 43:11.545
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's this weird, full circle moment experience, whatever where you see her to live, to stay alive and make some money, she is having to
43:11.525 --> 43:16.853
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, again, deliver this side that she would have told you, you know, in the 90s, stay away from.
43:16.973 --> 43:19.336
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, it's kind of a cautionary tale.
43:19.356 --> 43:21.720
[SPEAKER_01]: I guess in a lot of ways, but the documentary is really good.
43:22.000 --> 43:25.045
[SPEAKER_01]: And Jamie Lee Curtis is one of the executive producers of that.
43:25.445 --> 43:33.537
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I think, you know, she also recognized what that then she was actually Jamie Lee Curtis was kind of a part of this whole.
43:34.078 --> 43:34.759
[SPEAKER_03]: Sure.
43:34.839 --> 43:35.781
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, as well.
43:35.841 --> 43:38.865
[SPEAKER_03]: That's really, that's really interesting because, um,
43:38.845 --> 44:06.135
[SPEAKER_03]: yeah there's this there's this storyline of Susan powder and then she disappeared and the message is planted in our head that she did something but it sounds like she didn't do anything and when you look at it like I think I had in my head that she was too angry you know she's the angry woman and that was kind of her persona but men don't like an angry woman men and power don't like an angry woman especially if they're saying don't buy my snack well
44:06.115 --> 44:11.204
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, yeah, it's just, I don't know if they kind of gave me an, um, an Irene Cara kind of vibe.
44:11.304 --> 44:18.255
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, um, I've just like, you know, kind of calling some stuff out and then being shoved aside and yeah.
44:18.516 --> 44:19.417
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's take her down.
44:19.458 --> 44:20.179
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's take her down.
44:20.219 --> 44:21.261
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's just shut her up.
44:21.281 --> 44:22.242
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's just shut her up.
44:22.262 --> 44:22.723
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's just shut her up.
44:23.362 --> 44:44.155
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, we certainly can't ignore the impact that Jane Fonda and her workout and all these others had on fashion, but Jane's for sure her signature outfit of Lea Tard's Tides leg warmers, which she most likely just adapted from her ballet background, she's kind of bringing all that stuff back in.
44:44.135 --> 44:44.836
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
44:44.856 --> 45:12.032
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it became such a defining fashion trend and not okay really in my opinion linked to like a very specific aesthetic right like what you can look like and these things because they were very high cut
45:12.012 --> 45:16.278
[SPEAKER_02]: And you know from that signal that a woman was invested in her body, right?
45:16.819 --> 45:28.555
[SPEAKER_02]: And I had to laugh when I was writing that and doing some research because I thought, is that sort of like today, all the athletes are like, you know, like so often.
45:28.876 --> 45:30.478
[SPEAKER_02]: I'll put on leggings and stuff.
45:30.498 --> 45:31.219
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean,
45:31.199 --> 45:50.985
[SPEAKER_02]: Now thankfully most of the time I'm leaving Pilates when I'm running my errands in my workout clothes, but doesn't mean that for the past like eight years I haven't thrown out a pair of leggings at a take top and whatever to run errands, not because I want people to think I just worked out, but because if I feel like if I put them on then maybe I'll work out today and then I just don't.
45:51.025 --> 45:52.347
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, well, these are comfortable.
45:52.327 --> 45:53.589
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just gonna wear these all day.
45:54.109 --> 45:56.152
[SPEAKER_03]: So it's like this uniform.
45:56.412 --> 46:02.620
[SPEAKER_03]: I once had a guy, there's my next door neighbor, this is both like adorable and sad at the same time.
46:03.081 --> 46:20.983
[SPEAKER_03]: My next door neighbor recently gotten divorced and dad had the children and he was just sort of confiding in me one day how he was just really feeling like inadequate and he'd go to pick up the kids and he said, all these moms, they come to pick up the kids and they're coming like straight from yoga and stuff.
46:20.963 --> 46:24.570
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh honey, they're not going to be from you, they're not coming from you, they're not coming from China.
46:24.590 --> 46:25.431
[SPEAKER_03]: And they did not know.
46:25.471 --> 46:26.974
[SPEAKER_03]: They're not at yoga.
46:26.994 --> 46:28.878
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, no, do that's what they wear.
46:28.898 --> 46:34.849
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you're just wearing clothes, 95% of my wardrobe and what I wear is Ashley's shirt.
46:35.370 --> 46:36.832
[SPEAKER_02]: I will say it's comfortable.
46:37.033 --> 46:37.914
[SPEAKER_02]: I feel good in it.
46:37.934 --> 46:39.117
[SPEAKER_01]: What am I wearing right now?
46:39.237 --> 46:40.760
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not.
46:40.780 --> 46:40.980
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not.
46:40.960 --> 46:49.872
[SPEAKER_02]: We deserve to be comfortable looking the part in the 80s often was just as important as like the health benefits from the work out of it.
46:49.892 --> 46:50.753
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
46:51.534 --> 46:56.020
[SPEAKER_02]: And everyone was striving to be able to look like Jane or the people.
46:56.360 --> 46:56.700
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
46:56.821 --> 47:05.652
[SPEAKER_02]: But if not, I mean, that's why again, we go back to the thank goodness for the living or workouts and you're not having to go to the gym because if you if you couldn't put a pair of those tights on or something.
47:05.632 --> 47:07.855
[SPEAKER_02]: But you still wanted to help benefits of working out.
47:07.935 --> 47:10.078
[SPEAKER_02]: You now could just, you didn't have to go to the gym.
47:10.578 --> 47:14.143
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, I'm going to read a list of some things and I want to know which of these are guilty of.
47:14.523 --> 47:15.845
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, proud of it.
47:15.865 --> 47:16.065
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, okay.
47:16.085 --> 47:18.428
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I'm wearing wearing and the 80s.
47:18.649 --> 47:24.676
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, neon, like neon leotards or a band, like a headband or maybe a belt.
47:24.696 --> 47:25.457
[SPEAKER_02]: No, I'm stretchy.
47:25.497 --> 47:26.599
[SPEAKER_02]: I haven't seen you about neon.
47:26.639 --> 47:27.300
[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't like it.
47:27.380 --> 47:28.181
[SPEAKER_02]: I thought it looked cheap.
47:28.421 --> 47:29.943
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, my hand is at, like, yes.
47:29.963 --> 47:30.764
[SPEAKER_03]: Everybody else did.
47:30.824 --> 47:31.525
[SPEAKER_03]: I was the only one.
47:31.545 --> 47:35.470
[SPEAKER_03]: The French cut, the high cut leotards.
47:35.450 --> 47:36.171
[SPEAKER_02]: your hip bone.
47:36.211 --> 47:36.411
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
47:36.851 --> 47:37.072
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
47:37.192 --> 47:44.139
[SPEAKER_03]: I remember buying a swimsuit and feeling that my legs looked so stumpy because it wasn't high cut enough.
47:44.179 --> 47:44.619
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, has to be.
47:44.639 --> 47:47.782
[SPEAKER_03]: So I took it upon myself to take scissors.
47:47.802 --> 47:48.002
[SPEAKER_03]: No.
47:48.183 --> 47:50.545
[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, I'm like, I just had a bad idea.
47:50.605 --> 47:53.368
[SPEAKER_03]: And then I was just like, I'll just make a a ham of some kind.
47:53.688 --> 47:54.829
[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't know what I was doing.
47:54.909 --> 47:56.511
[SPEAKER_03]: I just thought I could do this.
47:56.531 --> 47:57.492
[SPEAKER_03]: It didn't work.
47:57.512 --> 47:59.854
[SPEAKER_02]: But I was cutting that with some of my hip bone.
47:59.874 --> 48:00.114
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
48:00.355 --> 48:03.718
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, anyway, that was the whole, it does
48:03.698 --> 48:04.479
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm okay.
48:04.559 --> 48:29.757
[SPEAKER_02]: We've talked about the spandex tights, so the tights that are like thick and shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny
48:29.737 --> 48:30.498
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, right, right.
48:30.538 --> 48:31.179
[SPEAKER_02]: And it goes under.
48:31.399 --> 48:33.162
[SPEAKER_02]: What about really bright sneakers?
48:33.222 --> 48:39.030
[SPEAKER_02]: Remember the 80s or when the really fun like rebox came into the rebox for Facebook or the classic.
48:39.050 --> 48:41.254
[SPEAKER_02]: They're highly, even for the high top of rebox.
48:41.314 --> 48:44.158
[SPEAKER_03]: The first, that was the first road mix shoe.
48:44.738 --> 48:44.979
[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
48:45.219 --> 48:50.447
[SPEAKER_02]: Another one of the pieces of exercise equipment that I'm going to find and share from the 70s.
48:50.667 --> 48:54.573
[SPEAKER_02]: It was a little bike, but the handlebars went forward and back.
48:54.593 --> 48:56.075
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah, we're at it.
48:56.095 --> 48:56.976
[SPEAKER_02]: Go forward.
48:58.205 --> 48:59.487
[SPEAKER_03]: It's a full body workout.
48:59.867 --> 49:03.832
[SPEAKER_03]: Could did you have a little belt around your leaves while I was talking about that?
49:03.852 --> 49:07.617
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, that's what I said earlier with a knee on my little stretch belt.
49:07.658 --> 49:08.318
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
49:08.338 --> 49:16.129
[SPEAKER_03]: And then sometimes people would take a little elastic belt and they would weave it through their leg holes and pass it in front.
49:16.209 --> 49:21.396
[SPEAKER_03]: And front, because the legs were so high you could, it went up to your waist basically.
49:21.456 --> 49:23.479
[SPEAKER_03]: I had no idea what the hell that was for.
49:23.519 --> 49:27.604
[SPEAKER_03]: It was just like, it was like wearing a necklace,
49:27.584 --> 49:29.689
[SPEAKER_03]: I think that's pure fashion.
49:29.850 --> 49:30.853
[SPEAKER_02]: That's pure fashion.
49:30.933 --> 49:31.093
[SPEAKER_02]: It is.
49:31.113 --> 49:31.614
[SPEAKER_02]: It has to be.
49:31.755 --> 49:34.221
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not holding your pants up or anything.
49:34.322 --> 49:35.063
[SPEAKER_02]: But think about it.
49:35.124 --> 49:39.555
[SPEAKER_02]: If you did it now with regular leg holes, it would be like right in front of your like pubis.
49:39.816 --> 49:40.518
[SPEAKER_02]: Like yes.
49:40.678 --> 49:42.362
[SPEAKER_02]: But like we're on the list.
49:42.382 --> 49:43.365
[SPEAKER_02]: But the leg.
49:43.345 --> 49:49.552
[SPEAKER_02]: Holds were so high that when you threaded it underneath your leotard and it came out the front.
49:49.592 --> 49:53.817
[SPEAKER_03]: It came out it about your waist Yeah, like your waist or your belly button area.
49:53.837 --> 49:55.499
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it looks like you're belt.
49:55.559 --> 49:56.620
[SPEAKER_03]: Why don't you just put it around?
49:56.681 --> 49:57.441
[SPEAKER_03]: Why are we putting in?
49:57.501 --> 49:58.242
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
49:58.262 --> 50:01.266
[SPEAKER_02]: It has to be your fashion, right?
50:01.606 --> 50:01.847
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
50:02.107 --> 50:02.748
[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
50:02.768 --> 50:04.830
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, nothing no purpose of that
50:04.810 --> 50:20.102
[SPEAKER_02]: I think for sure we can say that a lot of this fashion we're talking about and even the kind of cut I cut the the top off one of Brian's t-shirts for this look today I think so much of it though was inspired by media right by the movies yes.
50:20.082 --> 50:21.063
[SPEAKER_03]: Sure.
50:21.404 --> 50:23.947
[SPEAKER_02]: And the TV shows even of the 80s.
50:24.208 --> 50:29.174
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, just the t-shirt alone that you're talking about right now where you take a t-shirt and you cut it off.
50:29.495 --> 50:31.117
[SPEAKER_03]: Everybody's, tell me where that's from.
50:31.397 --> 50:33.921
[SPEAKER_03]: One, two, three, flash dance.
50:34.622 --> 50:45.516
[SPEAKER_03]: There's just, isn't that funny that there is not a single person who is living at that moment who doesn't know that, who didn't, and at first we cut them ourselves, but then pretty soon you could go to the store in there.
50:45.536 --> 50:46.157
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, we cut.
50:46.137 --> 50:47.959
[SPEAKER_03]: Right, they're cutting them for you.
50:48.079 --> 50:52.645
[SPEAKER_03]: All because Jennifer feels cut up her t-shirts and wore them in the movie Flash Dance.
50:52.665 --> 50:58.892
[SPEAKER_03]: So the bleeding of fitness into our pop culture was less like bleeding and more like a hostile takeover.
50:59.273 --> 51:11.267
[SPEAKER_03]: It was loud and colorful and it really blurred the lines between, we haven't really talked about this much, but it's blurring the lines between dance and exercise and art and not art.
51:11.247 --> 51:24.987
[SPEAKER_03]: And the first thing that I think that we think of as like an exercise induced movie, but it's really not, is flash dance.
51:30.805 --> 51:35.313
[SPEAKER_03]: Movies like Flash Dance were not about exercise, but you kind of didn't know that.
51:35.794 --> 51:37.177
[SPEAKER_03]: This was not a fitness movie.
51:37.277 --> 51:45.131
[SPEAKER_03]: It was 100% a dance movie, but if you went to an aerobics class in 1984, you definitely were doing donkey kicks to maniac.
51:45.632 --> 51:50.201
[SPEAKER_03]: For sure, because that's really the definition of aerobics.
51:50.221 --> 51:51.463
[SPEAKER_03]: It's fitness dancing.
51:51.443 --> 51:52.324
[SPEAKER_03]: You're running a place.
51:52.344 --> 52:15.055
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running a place, we're running
52:15.035 --> 52:20.901
[SPEAKER_03]: Just like Jane found a bringing her ballet where into her VHS tape, that's really what we were doing.
52:20.921 --> 52:24.425
[SPEAKER_03]: As we were all posing as like these quasi dancers for a decade.
52:24.905 --> 52:30.712
[SPEAKER_03]: But the movie that went there, like all the way there, in a way that was a little too on the nose.
52:31.152 --> 52:32.914
[SPEAKER_03]: Was the movie perfect?
52:33.074 --> 52:33.775
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh my God.
52:34.576 --> 52:40.502
[SPEAKER_03]: From this is the 1985 movie starring John Travolta and Jamie Lee Curtis and Mary Lou Hennner.
52:40.769 --> 52:44.813
[SPEAKER_03]: which was mostly about John Travolta doing hip thrusts in tiny shorts.
52:45.273 --> 52:46.915
[SPEAKER_03]: That's really what the movie is about.
52:47.215 --> 52:52.960
[SPEAKER_03]: And it was shouting a little too loudly like, Aralbex's life, there's no escaping it.
52:53.060 --> 52:55.082
[SPEAKER_03]: There's no other stories, just Aralbex.
52:55.723 --> 52:57.024
[SPEAKER_03]: This movie went too far.
52:57.584 --> 53:03.490
[SPEAKER_03]: It was so concentrated that it made too apparent the ridiculousness of it all.
53:03.810 --> 53:10.236
[SPEAKER_03]: The shorts were too short, the body rolls, and hip thrusts were too pornographic,
53:10.790 --> 53:37.759
[SPEAKER_03]: long with Jamie Lee Curtis and Travolta like trading fuck me vibes throughout every aerobics routine is just like hip thrust hip thrust hip thrust looking at each other looking at each other hip thrust looking at each other like what do you mean Jamie Lee Curtis what are you asking for right now it these aerobics sequences went on so long that they people felt like it was a porn flick instead of an aerobics movie and audiences didn't really be just said an aerobics movie
53:37.739 --> 53:42.985
[SPEAKER_03]: and yet that's what we're talking about.
53:43.166 --> 53:47.992
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so perfect was nominated for three golden raspberries.
53:48.012 --> 53:50.034
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I think.
53:50.515 --> 53:53.198
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, no, no, I think golden raspberries.
53:53.238 --> 53:53.679
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
53:53.699 --> 53:55.341
[SPEAKER_03]: Worst actor for John Travolta.
53:55.701 --> 54:00.507
[SPEAKER_03]: Worst supporting actress for Mary Lou Hennard and worst screenplay.
54:00.487 --> 54:01.028
[SPEAKER_03]: Ouch.
54:02.311 --> 54:06.842
[SPEAKER_03]: Not to mention that it was a nod for worst picture at the stinker's bad movie award.
54:07.324 --> 54:10.010
[SPEAKER_03]: No, it was Jamie Lee Curtis is not nominated in any of these.
54:10.090 --> 54:11.032
[SPEAKER_03]: I find that interesting.
54:11.814 --> 54:17.107
[SPEAKER_03]: I was so excited for this movie because I was excited for the blurring of dance and fitness.
54:17.167 --> 54:18.310
[SPEAKER_03]: And I was like,
54:18.290 --> 54:22.476
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not having fun right now, like it was just it then I did not like it.
54:22.577 --> 54:34.935
[SPEAKER_03]: I did however have the soundtrack which is very important because it shows how music was to not just this movie but to the entire fitness and aerobics craze how important it was.
54:35.456 --> 54:45.732
[SPEAKER_03]: This soundtrack included Germaine Jackson, Whitney Houston, known a Hendrix, the pointer sisters, the Thompson twins and most memorably
54:45.712 --> 54:52.520
[SPEAKER_03]: because you got a, you know, and I want some day I'm going to memorize all the words, but I didn't I know for, I know I can't do the whole thing.
54:52.540 --> 54:53.260
[SPEAKER_02]: I can't do the whole thing.
54:53.280 --> 54:54.161
[SPEAKER_02]: I can't do the whole thing.
54:54.181 --> 54:57.605
[SPEAKER_03]: So can my girls, so can my, my daughters and it's not too late for me.
54:57.705 --> 54:58.326
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not too late.
54:58.346 --> 55:00.268
[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe that's what I'll do for my 60th birthday.
55:00.909 --> 55:01.009
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
55:01.129 --> 55:06.595
[SPEAKER_02]: I always use that as like hit, like what's your fun talent or what's your, whatever.
55:06.675 --> 55:10.099
[SPEAKER_02]: It's yeah, I can say I can sing the whole Greek alphabet and I can sing
55:10.079 --> 55:13.325
[SPEAKER_02]: Now, imagine doing hip thrust with John Trevolta doing glam rap.
55:13.345 --> 55:15.389
[SPEAKER_02]: It's, I mean, glam rap is then all my work out.
55:15.550 --> 55:15.991
[SPEAKER_02]: Playless.
55:16.051 --> 55:23.906
[SPEAKER_03]: So I, that's, that's exactly why I found this down and all the songs on this soundtrack have pretty much the same beats per minute.
55:23.926 --> 55:29.978
[SPEAKER_03]: Because the important part about, you know, what differentiates aerobics from a dance class, we got to take our heart rate.
55:29.958 --> 55:31.903
[SPEAKER_03]: You got to get your heart ready to get out of that.
55:31.923 --> 55:33.006
[SPEAKER_03]: Yep, we're going to stop.
55:33.126 --> 55:33.708
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to stop.
55:33.728 --> 55:34.289
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to stop.
55:34.309 --> 55:34.710
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to stop.
55:34.730 --> 55:35.191
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to stop.
55:35.211 --> 55:35.753
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to stop.
55:35.813 --> 55:36.294
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to stop.
55:36.314 --> 55:36.775
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to stop.
55:36.795 --> 55:37.196
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:37.216 --> 55:37.698
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to stop.
55:37.878 --> 55:38.279
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:38.299 --> 55:39.141
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:39.161 --> 55:39.643
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:39.663 --> 55:40.244
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:40.344 --> 55:40.866
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:40.966 --> 55:41.527
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:41.608 --> 55:42.430
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:42.450 --> 55:43.111
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:43.131 --> 55:43.572
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:43.593 --> 55:44.194
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:44.234 --> 55:44.816
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:44.836 --> 55:45.237
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:45.257 --> 55:45.678
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:45.758 --> 55:46.440
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:46.460 --> 55:46.921
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:46.941 --> 55:47.342
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to stop.
55:47.322 --> 55:47.923
[SPEAKER_01]: That was hard.
55:48.123 --> 55:48.663
[SPEAKER_01]: I was sorry.
55:48.683 --> 55:58.613
[SPEAKER_01]: Because you have to raise your hand, at least in mind it'd be like, okay, and you want around this and people are raising your hand and then it would be over this all of then you, so even if I was over the phone.
55:58.633 --> 55:59.654
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, because you were in the red zone.
55:59.694 --> 56:00.775
[SPEAKER_03]: Were you in the red zone?
56:00.795 --> 56:01.996
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, or the blue zone?
56:02.076 --> 56:02.597
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
56:02.757 --> 56:04.859
[SPEAKER_02]: And then you even taught us how to do it too.
56:04.999 --> 56:07.541
[SPEAKER_02]: I remember in the 80s, they taught us how to do it.
56:07.581 --> 56:08.002
[SPEAKER_02]: I know.
56:08.683 --> 56:13.347
[SPEAKER_02]: Now all I'm thinking in my head is, you know, the is, Wamera.
56:14.761 --> 56:27.902
[SPEAKER_03]: So the music is the thing that differentiated this fitness craze from everything that came before.
56:28.323 --> 56:30.306
[SPEAKER_03]: It was nothing without music.
56:30.386 --> 56:32.590
[SPEAKER_03]: Music was the backbone of the entire thing.
56:32.950 --> 56:37.077
[SPEAKER_03]: Suddenly we were exercising to music because we were also dancing, right?
56:37.137 --> 56:38.219
[SPEAKER_03]: It's like jazzer size.
56:38.479 --> 56:40.903
[SPEAKER_03]: It's like a jazz class that we're taking our heart rate.
56:40.883 --> 56:43.126
[SPEAKER_03]: This is the same thing, we're dancing.
56:43.506 --> 56:47.952
[SPEAKER_03]: And that was a game changer for all of the people who weren't like sportsball people.
56:48.413 --> 56:54.120
[SPEAKER_03]: And this led to actual songs about and for and inspired by fitness.
56:54.501 --> 57:10.722
[SPEAKER_03]: And before we get to the big one, I just need to share and I need to remind everybody that in 1981, I played my own role in the fitness craze by performing a work of jazz choreography
57:21.080 --> 57:23.606
[SPEAKER_03]: You've all seen the photo, you know the photo I'm talking about.
57:23.887 --> 57:38.262
[SPEAKER_03]: This involved a red sequined, leotard, a red sequined headband that went underneath my curled bangs and red and white striped leg warmers that were festuned with, wait for it, red sequins.
57:38.832 --> 57:43.999
[SPEAKER_03]: The whole dance was less Bob Fasi and more gym class.
57:44.439 --> 57:52.349
[SPEAKER_03]: Literally, the choreography was like, windmills, windmills, toe touches, knee lifts, toe touches, windmills, knee lifts.
57:52.469 --> 57:55.153
[SPEAKER_03]: It's like we were performing exercise.
57:55.914 --> 57:58.537
[SPEAKER_03]: And I want, I love the song, I still love this song.
57:58.938 --> 58:01.581
[SPEAKER_03]: And I want to do a little dramatic reading of the lyrics.
58:01.781 --> 58:03.884
[SPEAKER_03]: Please, for this song, by Diana Ross.
58:04.245 --> 58:06.207
[SPEAKER_03]: It's called Work That Body.
58:06.187 --> 58:07.610
[SPEAKER_03]: All right, get ready.
58:08.070 --> 58:09.012
[SPEAKER_03]: Those are the these are lyrics.
58:09.192 --> 58:09.573
[SPEAKER_03]: All right.
58:10.054 --> 58:10.575
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's it.
58:10.595 --> 58:11.216
[SPEAKER_03]: These are the lyrics.
58:11.797 --> 58:12.138
[SPEAKER_03]: All right.
58:12.438 --> 58:12.879
[SPEAKER_03]: Get ready.
58:13.179 --> 58:14.381
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to work that body.
58:15.203 --> 58:31.131
[SPEAKER_03]: Reach two three four five six seven eight stretch two three four five six seven eight push two three four six seven eight up two three four five six seven eight we're not done yet step
58:31.111 --> 58:31.732
[SPEAKER_03]: Step.
58:31.752 --> 58:32.434
[SPEAKER_03]: Turn around.
58:32.634 --> 58:32.915
[SPEAKER_03]: Step.
58:33.095 --> 58:33.336
[SPEAKER_03]: Step.
58:33.616 --> 58:34.358
[SPEAKER_03]: Turn around.
58:34.598 --> 58:35.881
[SPEAKER_03]: You can make your body.
58:36.262 --> 58:36.743
[SPEAKER_03]: Step.
58:36.763 --> 58:37.063
[SPEAKER_03]: Step.
58:37.244 --> 58:37.965
[SPEAKER_03]: Turn around.
58:38.206 --> 58:39.068
[SPEAKER_03]: Sheek down.
58:39.148 --> 58:39.388
[SPEAKER_03]: Step.
58:39.669 --> 58:39.949
[SPEAKER_03]: Step.
58:40.170 --> 58:40.851
[SPEAKER_03]: Turn around.
58:41.092 --> 58:41.793
[SPEAKER_03]: Left foot.
58:42.194 --> 58:46.002
[SPEAKER_03]: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, and rest.
58:46.743 --> 58:48.006
[SPEAKER_03]: Work that body.
58:50.028 --> 58:50.970
[SPEAKER_03]: You can do it.
58:51.411 --> 58:52.573
[SPEAKER_03]: You can make your body.
58:53.094 --> 58:56.500
[SPEAKER_03]: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
58:56.520 --> 59:00.067
[SPEAKER_01]: Shake down two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
59:00.087 --> 59:01.009
[SPEAKER_01]: Work that body.
59:01.670 --> 59:02.151
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, thank you.
59:02.271 --> 59:05.778
[SPEAKER_01]: I wonder where that falls on Diana's favorite songs.
59:05.798 --> 59:06.379
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
59:06.740 --> 59:07.902
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like at a concert.
59:07.882 --> 59:09.004
[SPEAKER_03]: She proud that one.
59:09.504 --> 59:10.205
[SPEAKER_03]: You know what's funny?
59:10.506 --> 59:11.807
[SPEAKER_03]: It's one of the only songs.
59:12.028 --> 59:13.009
[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe that's exaggerating.
59:13.049 --> 59:13.369
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
59:13.409 --> 59:16.554
[SPEAKER_03]: But nonetheless, Diana Ross wrote that song herself.
59:16.574 --> 59:18.156
[SPEAKER_03]: No way to go with the lyrics, Diana Ross.
59:18.176 --> 59:19.317
[SPEAKER_03]: Those were awesome.
59:19.337 --> 59:25.526
[SPEAKER_03]: The flip side of the song, this came out on my birthday in 1982, although her album was released before that.
59:25.646 --> 59:36.741
[SPEAKER_03]: That's why I was able to do this jazz inspired choreography
59:36.721 --> 59:37.762
[SPEAKER_03]: everybody get ready to drink.
59:38.664 --> 59:39.184
[SPEAKER_03]: Dean Petrie.
59:40.406 --> 59:42.609
[SPEAKER_03]: Of course, I got it.
59:42.629 --> 59:43.630
[SPEAKER_03]: Get out of town.
59:43.650 --> 59:47.055
[SPEAKER_03]: From our foot loose episode, everybody drink, everybody drink.
59:47.075 --> 59:47.215
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
59:47.255 --> 59:50.620
[SPEAKER_03]: So the reviews for this song, I just think this is so funny.
59:50.760 --> 59:54.225
[SPEAKER_03]: The one review says, this is a healthy energetic product.
59:54.405 --> 59:56.248
[SPEAKER_03]: I deal for Jane Fonda style workouts.
59:56.688 --> 01:00:00.113
[SPEAKER_03]: And when I read that, I was like, oh my god, light bulb moment.
01:00:00.093 --> 01:00:07.970
[SPEAKER_03]: People were creating products that could be used in the fitness industry, not just played on the radio.
01:00:08.050 --> 01:00:08.391
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
01:00:09.694 --> 01:00:14.323
[SPEAKER_03]: So Diana Ross made the song to beat for somebody to do an in aerobics routine.
01:00:15.025 --> 01:00:15.666
[SPEAKER_03]: That's amazing.
01:00:15.686 --> 01:00:16.909
[SPEAKER_03]: You were looking at it.
01:00:16.929 --> 01:00:17.691
[SPEAKER_03]: You were looking at it.
01:00:17.711 --> 01:00:19.174
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's great to go.
01:00:19.194 --> 01:00:19.755
[SPEAKER_03]: It's important.
01:00:20.309 --> 01:00:21.833
[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, so now let's get to the MacDaddy.
01:00:22.174 --> 01:00:22.996
[SPEAKER_03]: Drummer old, please.
01:00:23.598 --> 01:00:30.155
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's get physical, physical, how will I get physical?
01:00:30.175 --> 01:00:33.745
[SPEAKER_06]: Let's get physical, let me body-type.
01:00:35.851 --> 01:00:45.861
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, if there's anything as high as we got Jane Fonda, we got Richard Simmons and huddling right there at the top of those two is Olivia Newton-John's physical.
01:00:46.441 --> 01:00:54.289
[SPEAKER_03]: Here we have gym culture, aerobics fashion, including ONJ style sweat bands and most importantly, sexual innuendo.
01:00:54.669 --> 01:00:59.414
[SPEAKER_03]: It was bodies, bodies moving, bodies sweating, bodies and skin type clothing.
01:00:59.474 --> 01:01:03.057
[SPEAKER_03]: It's
01:01:03.037 --> 01:01:07.224
[SPEAKER_03]: which I did not know when I was in seventh grade, when this song came out.
01:01:07.545 --> 01:01:20.106
[SPEAKER_03]: So I just want to read you some of the lyrics because I think, again, we're gonna have a little dramatic reading because we did not know that this song about doing aerobics and getting healthy was really about sex.
01:01:20.667 --> 01:01:28.740
[SPEAKER_03]: And when we learned it, like, there were lots of words in this song that we, there were lots of monigrees cause we're like, we don't know what she's saying.
01:01:28.720 --> 01:01:30.703
[SPEAKER_03]: So, again, dramatic reading.
01:01:30.903 --> 01:01:31.845
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm just very quickly.
01:01:32.306 --> 01:01:36.152
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm saying all the things that I know you'll like, making good conversation.
01:01:36.172 --> 01:01:38.876
[SPEAKER_03]: I gotta handle you just right.
01:01:39.296 --> 01:01:40.198
[SPEAKER_03]: You know what I mean?
01:01:40.218 --> 01:01:45.105
[SPEAKER_03]: I took you to an intimate restaurant, then to a suggestive movie.
01:01:45.145 --> 01:01:50.053
[SPEAKER_03]: There's nothing left to talk about, unless it's horizontally.
01:01:50.073 --> 01:01:52.377
[SPEAKER_03]: And I was like, what do you mean horizontally?
01:01:52.417 --> 01:01:57.124
[SPEAKER_03]: And my friend Christy was like, like, lying down in a bed.
01:01:57.104 --> 01:01:58.186
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, what?
01:01:58.406 --> 01:02:00.669
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm thinking that all things are on the green for me.
01:02:00.849 --> 01:02:02.111
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I have to go listen to it.
01:02:02.211 --> 01:02:04.635
[SPEAKER_01]: Cause I don't remember saying any of those words.
01:02:04.655 --> 01:02:06.277
[SPEAKER_03]: What was that to Lee?
01:02:06.718 --> 01:02:08.440
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's get this go.
01:02:08.460 --> 01:02:14.269
[SPEAKER_03]: So the song was banned in a lot of places because of those because of that whole notion right there.
01:02:14.569 --> 01:02:17.613
[SPEAKER_03]: And also they didn't like, let me hear your body talk.
01:02:18.094 --> 01:02:19.516
[SPEAKER_03]: Let me hear your body talk.
01:02:19.536 --> 01:02:20.478
[SPEAKER_03]: That was nasty.
01:02:20.578 --> 01:02:21.439
[SPEAKER_03]: They didn't like that.
01:02:21.699 --> 01:02:27.027
[SPEAKER_03]: And then there's this little nugget, too, that I never knew what this, I didn't know what she was saying.
01:02:27.007 --> 01:02:28.251
[SPEAKER_03]: Enemies!
01:02:28.271 --> 01:02:29.454
[SPEAKER_03]: Enemies!
01:02:29.474 --> 01:02:31.059
[SPEAKER_03]: I want to get Enemies!
01:02:31.480 --> 01:02:33.326
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's get into Enemies!
01:02:33.486 --> 01:02:34.589
[SPEAKER_03]: Do you want to get into Enemies?
01:02:34.710 --> 01:02:35.211
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes!
01:02:35.973 --> 01:02:37.498
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's get into Enemies!
01:02:37.518 --> 01:02:39.885
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, why don't I say that a lot?
01:02:41.013 --> 01:02:42.095
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's get into animal.
01:02:42.555 --> 01:02:44.078
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's get an animal.
01:02:44.659 --> 01:02:50.228
[SPEAKER_03]: And I think I thought she was saying vonder mo, vonder mo, even the vonder mo is not a word.
01:02:50.648 --> 01:02:57.840
[SPEAKER_02]: I always know it was animal, but I don't think I because the video and all the images ever associated with that song were it's.
01:02:57.820 --> 01:03:12.859
[SPEAKER_02]: her looking like I look right now with her little weights and I thought you were just going to be grunting because it's so hard like I was seeing all the lyrics but I didn't equate it to that just because I my brain wasn't working like that yet I had to have
01:03:12.839 --> 01:03:16.865
[SPEAKER_03]: And when it was explained, it was so very cheeky.
01:03:17.246 --> 01:03:25.539
[SPEAKER_03]: And these suggestive lyrics were a very important part of not just the fitness craze of the moment, but part of her makeover package.
01:03:25.560 --> 01:03:29.686
[SPEAKER_03]: Owen J. did a makeover, a transformation, just like Sandy from Greece.
01:03:29.726 --> 01:03:30.207
[SPEAKER_03]: She was the queen.
01:03:30.187 --> 01:03:55.637
[SPEAKER_03]: clean cut good girl and then she became a real sex goddess and she became the first crush of so so many people and it all started with that last scene in Greece when cardigan sandy becomes carnival sandy and then what comes next boom physical let's get animal and it was it was racy enough it was so racy that Owen J did have regrets after it was released and she wanted to pull it.
01:03:55.617 --> 01:03:57.960
[SPEAKER_03]: She wanted, she's like, no, no, it's too much.
01:03:58.000 --> 01:03:59.122
[SPEAKER_03]: Take it off the market.
01:03:59.222 --> 01:04:04.108
[SPEAKER_03]: It's over and they were like, honey, it's too late and it's climbing the charts like wildfire.
01:04:04.329 --> 01:04:05.470
[SPEAKER_03]: So that's unknown.
01:04:06.491 --> 01:04:10.437
[SPEAKER_03]: So the video was really what helped me understand what she was even talking about.
01:04:10.477 --> 01:04:12.399
[SPEAKER_03]: This is a hilarious rewatch.
01:04:12.580 --> 01:04:17.466
[SPEAKER_03]: You need to watch this video and also know that it won a Grammy for video of the year.
01:04:17.867 --> 01:04:21.912
[SPEAKER_03]: This is purely a woman objectifying men.
01:04:21.892 --> 01:04:23.515
[SPEAKER_03]: and it's very refreshing.
01:04:23.916 --> 01:04:32.171
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but it's also, I'm not sure how much we had seen of women objectifying men before physical and it's pretty empowering.
01:04:32.772 --> 01:04:39.985
[SPEAKER_03]: But if you turned to the tables and if a man were doing that or saying those things, it would be highly inappropriate.
01:04:39.965 --> 01:04:50.259
[SPEAKER_03]: So, the premise of the video is, ONJ is all jazz recised up in her leotard and her headband, and she's trying to teach a bunch of overweight men how to exercise, but they are lost causes.
01:04:50.720 --> 01:04:53.664
[SPEAKER_03]: And she leaves the room to take a shower, as one does.
01:04:54.244 --> 01:04:56.768
[SPEAKER_03]: She's very sexually frustrated.
01:04:56.848 --> 01:04:59.852
[SPEAKER_03]: She wants to get it on at the gym, and these guys are not doing it for her.
01:04:59.912 --> 01:05:04.318
[SPEAKER_03]: So shower, shower, water, falling over me, water coming out of my mouth.
01:05:04.298 --> 01:05:17.475
[SPEAKER_03]: But somehow when she's gone, all of these overweight men turn into like Arnold Schwarzenegger types complete with tiny little banana hammocks, which please is O&J when she gets out of the shower and now is going to play tennis.
01:05:17.976 --> 01:05:20.719
[SPEAKER_03]: And so O&J starts to flirt, flirt, flirt, flirt.
01:05:20.739 --> 01:05:22.962
[SPEAKER_03]: She's going to get it on with one of these banana hammock guys.
01:05:23.383 --> 01:05:28.489
[SPEAKER_03]: But then two of the men walk out holding hands, oops, they don't like ladies.
01:05:29.230 --> 01:05:33.816
[SPEAKER_03]: Even if it's Olivia Newton John and I'm like
01:05:33.982 --> 01:05:36.508
[SPEAKER_03]: and she's like, oh well, and then more men leave.
01:05:36.588 --> 01:05:37.710
[SPEAKER_03]: And they're all going with each other.
01:05:37.730 --> 01:05:39.454
[SPEAKER_03]: They're like, arm and arm and holding hands.
01:05:39.654 --> 01:05:40.757
[SPEAKER_03]: All of the men are gay.
01:05:40.977 --> 01:05:42.260
[SPEAKER_03]: She's like, what about me?
01:05:42.300 --> 01:05:49.155
[SPEAKER_03]: Until she finally finds the one remaining overweight man, he's the one who's heterosexual, and they go play tennis.
01:05:49.557 --> 01:05:54.245
[SPEAKER_03]: That's the video clip notes that that is yes, mm-hmm.
01:05:54.265 --> 01:05:54.726
[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
01:05:55.027 --> 01:06:02.761
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna have to rewatch it because it is so funny any of that stuck in my head I just have her like hilarious.
01:06:02.781 --> 01:06:04.885
[SPEAKER_02]: I remember that video very clearly.
01:06:04.905 --> 01:06:06.267
[SPEAKER_02]: We'll put it in the weekly reader
01:06:06.247 --> 01:06:10.792
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and there are lots of their toe touches and windmills and headbands.
01:06:11.293 --> 01:06:15.318
[SPEAKER_03]: It was, and like I said before, it would be very inappropriate if it was sung by a man.
01:06:15.678 --> 01:06:21.725
[SPEAKER_03]: It was written for, and I'm quoting here, a macho male rock figure like Rod Stewart.
01:06:22.286 --> 01:06:28.373
[SPEAKER_03]: But Owen J's manager heard it someplace in the studio and was like, No, I'm taking it.
01:06:28.353 --> 01:06:32.297
[SPEAKER_03]: Um, as you know, this was a ginormous hit, huge, huge, huge hit.
01:06:32.617 --> 01:06:33.558
[SPEAKER_03]: It affects the culture.
01:06:33.699 --> 01:06:35.160
[SPEAKER_03]: It makes us all wear headbands.
01:06:35.621 --> 01:06:43.048
[SPEAKER_03]: It was at number one for ten consecutive weeks, which was the most of all time at that point in time.
01:06:43.369 --> 01:06:47.934
[SPEAKER_03]: And you guys might remember from our solid gold episode, where the solid gold dancer is every week.
01:06:48.114 --> 01:06:53.800
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, they would get the information about what was the number one song before the rest of the world did, because they had to choreograph a little dance to it.
01:06:54.260 --> 01:06:57.904
[SPEAKER_03]: And every week they would open the envelope and it would be physical,
01:06:57.884 --> 01:07:22.069
[SPEAKER_03]: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
01:07:22.049 --> 01:07:36.912
[SPEAKER_03]: is due to ONJ's previous, I think, previous, goody-touchu's image, and then being able to be a sex goddess, she did that so successfully, and this is a quote that comes from record world, and I think it's very accurate.
01:07:37.413 --> 01:07:44.985
[SPEAKER_03]: They attributed success to the song being a big pounding beat, and the lusty idea of Olivia Newton-John getting physical.
01:07:44.965 --> 01:07:52.016
[SPEAKER_03]: It's a little bit of a Madonna horror situation like she was safe, but she was all also now insanely sexy.
01:07:52.858 --> 01:07:53.098
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
01:07:53.118 --> 01:07:59.308
[SPEAKER_01]: And as you're saying all that, I'm realizing at least for me, that kind of goes along with my coming of age.
01:07:59.548 --> 01:08:03.615
[SPEAKER_01]: It was, you know, I was there was grease, there was that kind of thing.
01:08:03.595 --> 01:08:22.482
[SPEAKER_01]: Have you never been mellow and loving her from that senior at the rodeo, but then I start high school and I you know I'm 14 and stuff when the song comes out and so just like a living and a living and John can get sexy Well, so can Carolyn, but yeah, I feel like that really
01:08:22.462 --> 01:08:37.585
[SPEAKER_01]: kind of mirrored what I was experiencing and you know and for a lot of gen Xers that would have been right about that same time so it makes it makes the law sense and it showed that a good girl can be sexy like a good girl can have a good time.
01:08:37.565 --> 01:08:42.635
[SPEAKER_03]: We think about how many times a good girl has tried to change their image.
01:08:42.715 --> 01:08:49.850
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, we talk about the people on the little house on the prayer and you're like, no, Nelly Olson, take the bikini off and put on a prairie dress like you don't want it.
01:08:50.230 --> 01:08:52.134
[SPEAKER_03]: And here we're like, no, she's doing it.
01:08:52.234 --> 01:08:57.565
[SPEAKER_03]: She's really successfully doing it and all under the guys of a workout.
01:08:57.545 --> 01:08:57.906
[SPEAKER_03]: Right?
01:08:57.946 --> 01:09:02.075
[SPEAKER_03]: The whole thing was under the guise of an aerobics routine of being in the gym.
01:09:02.476 --> 01:09:06.685
[SPEAKER_03]: And so that is like you have the Richard Simmons show starts in 1980.
01:09:07.166 --> 01:09:08.428
[SPEAKER_03]: You have physical in 1981.
01:09:08.549 --> 01:09:10.653
[SPEAKER_03]: Jean Fonda comes out in 1982.
01:09:10.834 --> 01:09:12.938
[SPEAKER_03]: We are off to the race.
01:09:29.067 --> 01:09:36.698
[SPEAKER_01]: As we have been talking about all of this, I keep coming back to this idea that we were really raised by this fitness boom.
01:09:36.778 --> 01:09:40.644
[SPEAKER_01]: I almost feel like it's never not been there now in our lives.
01:09:40.664 --> 01:09:44.810
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, this was the explosion, but there's been some element of it all the way.
01:09:45.230 --> 01:09:49.517
[SPEAKER_01]: Like we just said, I was at Pilates this morning, we're wearing our athletes, your places.
01:09:49.597 --> 01:09:53.843
[SPEAKER_01]: It's always been there, but we were kind of at the, I don't know the forefront of it all.
01:09:53.863 --> 01:09:55.285
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just always been there.
01:09:55.365 --> 01:09:56.827
[SPEAKER_01]: And we've always... All the birth of it.
01:09:56.867 --> 01:09:57.488
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
01:09:57.468 --> 01:10:02.454
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so it really is kind of a unique gen X pop culture experience.
01:10:02.494 --> 01:10:07.299
[SPEAKER_01]: Not, I mean, granted, our moms were, you know, probably doing some of this, but we grew up with that.
01:10:07.440 --> 01:10:16.710
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it, um, it shaped, well, really, um, not only our bodies, but our images of what our bodies should look like and be like and act like.
01:10:17.511 --> 01:10:19.574
[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't even think we realized it at the time.
01:10:19.614 --> 01:10:24.960
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm only as we are having this conversation kind of putting all these pieces together.
01:10:25.058 --> 01:10:30.668
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, like we say all the time where the Star Wars generation or the Big Wheel generation or the Sesame Street generation, right?
01:10:30.688 --> 01:10:33.332
[SPEAKER_03]: We're the aerobic generation, right?
01:10:33.553 --> 01:10:40.605
[SPEAKER_03]: I think you hit on something really important earlier Carolyn, we talked about how it started with us, but it just continues to change.
01:10:40.625 --> 01:10:46.054
[SPEAKER_03]: And would you think about like, jazzer size, Jane fond, or Richard Simmons, let's get physical.
01:10:46.034 --> 01:10:47.496
[SPEAKER_03]: body-hugging spandex.
01:10:47.516 --> 01:10:49.439
[SPEAKER_03]: They're all apart of Jan X history.
01:10:49.880 --> 01:11:01.296
[SPEAKER_03]: And it was so outrageous and it was sociatrical and it was so kind of ridiculous if you think about it like health and wellness and the gym plus music and fashion and dance and lifestyle.
01:11:01.677 --> 01:11:03.940
[SPEAKER_03]: It was such a weird and unlikely combination.
01:11:04.521 --> 01:11:09.308
[SPEAKER_03]: I think the thing that is so notable about it is that like so many things in our era.
01:11:09.288 --> 01:11:13.016
[SPEAKER_03]: is that it was so universal, you could not escape it.
01:11:13.136 --> 01:11:14.259
[SPEAKER_03]: It was everywhere.
01:11:14.640 --> 01:11:15.722
[SPEAKER_03]: It touched everyone.
01:11:15.862 --> 01:11:25.643
[SPEAKER_03]: Even if you weren't going to a robix and you were not wearing a bright fuchsia unitard because it was on the radio and it was on TV and it was on the movies.
01:11:25.683 --> 01:11:26.525
[SPEAKER_03]: It was what you listened to.
01:11:26.545 --> 01:11:27.347
[SPEAKER_03]: It was what you watched.
01:11:27.327 --> 01:11:31.333
[SPEAKER_03]: Every TV show had to have someone in a Liatard at some point.
01:11:31.853 --> 01:11:44.411
[SPEAKER_03]: Even if they weren't featuring in a Robix segment, maybe Barbara from one day at a time is like running into answer or ringing telephone and she has her stripe Liatard with matching tights on and matching legwormers and matching headband.
01:11:44.431 --> 01:11:49.999
[SPEAKER_03]: And she grabs a towel and she's gonna like dab at the sweat on her neck because she's doing a video with the other room.
01:11:50.420 --> 01:11:54.165
[SPEAKER_03]: That could be something that happened in just a random TV show.
01:11:54.666 --> 01:11:56.068
[SPEAKER_03]: I am positive.
01:11:56.048 --> 01:11:59.613
[SPEAKER_03]: that fantasy island and love boat had aerobic storylines.
01:11:59.733 --> 01:12:06.782
[SPEAKER_03]: For sure, like was there in aerobic's teacher who's being stalked by a former pupil who's pissed because you never lost weight?
01:12:07.222 --> 01:12:09.325
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, we have to look this up.
01:12:09.385 --> 01:12:11.087
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sure that there are aerobic storylines.
01:12:11.648 --> 01:12:14.812
[SPEAKER_03]: The movement had the most flamboyant start ever.
01:12:14.852 --> 01:12:20.239
[SPEAKER_03]: And the best way to see how ridiculous something was is to give it the Halloween costume test.
01:12:20.879 --> 01:12:23.823
[SPEAKER_03]: Would this make a good Halloween costume?
01:12:23.943 --> 01:12:25.245
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm looking at you Michelle.
01:12:26.356 --> 01:12:26.799
[SPEAKER_03]: What?
01:12:26.899 --> 01:12:28.388
[SPEAKER_02]: We have a win.
01:12:28.449 --> 01:12:32.232
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not going to go to Safeway.
01:12:33.427 --> 01:12:38.192
[SPEAKER_03]: I think the answer is yes, please do it and everybody, please send us photos.
01:12:38.633 --> 01:12:41.997
[SPEAKER_03]: Just because the outrageousness is gone does not mean that it died.
01:12:42.497 --> 01:12:43.939
[SPEAKER_03]: It absolutely did not die.
01:12:44.019 --> 01:12:46.942
[SPEAKER_03]: Just like you said, Carolyn, it just morphed into other things.
01:12:47.423 --> 01:12:54.651
[SPEAKER_03]: Stepa Robix, the shake weight, yoga pants, athletes, your crossfit, hit classes, zoom but now we have ulla classes.
01:12:55.191 --> 01:13:01.138
[SPEAKER_03]: All of these things were born from the womb of jazer-size in Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons.
01:13:01.203 --> 01:13:03.525
[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that's a pretty impressive lifespan.
01:13:04.166 --> 01:13:07.088
[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you so much for listening today and we will see you next time.
01:13:07.529 --> 01:13:12.793
