It's a good, like, lighthearted ~ way to for our s I'm primarily cyclists, right?
00:01:59.918 --> 00:02:01.730
Like you do you do any ultrarunning?
00:02:01.730 --> 00:02:05.540
We have a lot of ultrarunner like audience as well, but do you do any of that stuff?
00:02:06.195 --> 00:02:08.542
Not on purpose.
00:02:09.647 --> 00:02:11.326
If I get lost, maybe.
00:02:11.326 --> 00:02:11.826
Yeah.
00:02:11.826 --> 00:02:15.501
~ so cyclist, cyclist friends, and followers.
00:02:15.501 --> 00:02:26.009
~ I was telling Tegan Lee she she is able to you know, lightheartedly make jokes about the things we're always thinking and and she does a great job at it.
00:02:26.009 --> 00:02:29.323
So go follow what is your social handle for our listeners?
00:02:29.758 --> 00:02:33.284
~ it's at Teagan Phillips Comics.
00:02:33.284 --> 00:02:36.909
I should probably ch I've been meaning update it for a while, but I just haven't done it.
00:02:36.909 --> 00:02:37.990
But yes.
00:02:38.163 --> 00:02:39.365
Give it a follow, you guys.
00:02:39.365 --> 00:02:51.554
~ okay, but before we get to learn more about Tegan and her cycling history and maybe fun stuff about what what ~ how you got into like your Instagram content too, it could be interesting to to learn.
00:02:51.554 --> 00:02:55.257
But ~ we're gonna break down your two truths and lie in no particular order.
00:02:55.257 --> 00:02:56.799
So I'll let you share those with me.
00:02:56.799 --> 00:03:01.270
~ okay, two truths and a lie.
00:03:01.693 --> 00:03:09.461
Number one, I once only ate ice cream for three days.
00:03:10.341 --> 00:03:21.824
Number two, I broke my arm on a first date and finished the date and then went to hospital.
00:03:22.623 --> 00:03:34.847
And number three, I am blind in one of my eyes, eighty percent blind from the Disease.
00:03:36.963 --> 00:03:37.954
You're laughing.
00:03:37.954 --> 00:03:40.264
So now I feel like that one's the lie.
00:03:42.606 --> 00:03:44.687
We just went like ice cream.
00:03:44.747 --> 00:03:47.243
Well, it did get more extreme as we went on there.
00:03:47.243 --> 00:03:49.459
Ice cream, broken arm, blind.
00:03:49.459 --> 00:03:52.091
Like we went more definitely more extreme.
00:03:52.091 --> 00:03:58.713
~ okay, so blind in 80% of one of your eyes from a disease.
00:03:58.713 --> 00:04:02.875
I did not come across this in our research view.
00:04:03.324 --> 00:04:07.277
~ Your arm on a first date.
00:04:07.277 --> 00:04:10.316
Maybe you were like on a cycling first date.
00:04:10.316 --> 00:04:17.036
A lot of us like to crash our bikes and broke an arm or collarbone is a very common injury.
00:04:17.036 --> 00:04:20.379
I feel like if you were on a bike trip, you could have eaten ice cream for three days.
00:04:20.379 --> 00:04:21.971
Easy, no problem.
00:04:22.911 --> 00:04:24.653
I feel like that's plausible.
00:04:25.514 --> 00:04:26.334
Only ice cream.
00:04:26.334 --> 00:04:30.238
I mean, maybe it was really hot and that was like all you had access to.
00:04:31.629 --> 00:04:36.367
Okay, because you laughed when you said the last one, I think that was a lie, but don't tell us the answer.
00:04:36.367 --> 00:04:39.271
We're gonna find out at the end of the episode.
00:04:40.033 --> 00:04:46.290
all right, so why don't we why don't you share a little bit too about what got you into cycling?
00:04:46.290 --> 00:05:15.245
started cycling just ~ like like everyone like a a running injury ~ stress fracture i got into i got into gymming i got a stress fracture from running on the treadmill got into spinning became like a spinning assistant at the university gym and then my dad was a cyclist and he bought me a bike ~ and that was like the beginning of of the end really And just got got hooked.
00:05:15.245 --> 00:05:17.288
And do you do primarily road?
00:05:17.288 --> 00:05:19.521
Are you doing any other types of cycling?
00:05:20.338 --> 00:05:24.942
I spend a lot of time riding my gravel bike on the road.
00:05:25.105 --> 00:05:25.896
Yep.
00:05:26.262 --> 00:05:30.386
just out of like laziness to go and ride gravel.
00:05:30.386 --> 00:05:35.550
But I I would say at the moment I I'm mostly identify as a gravel bike packer.
00:05:35.550 --> 00:05:41.709
That's my like kind of thing that I enjoy the most.
00:05:41.709 --> 00:05:42.721
Yeah, amazing.
00:05:42.721 --> 00:05:50.612
~ and so with the gravel bikepacking, what was your first like gravel bikepacking adventure you took on?
00:05:50.612 --> 00:06:12.557
~ I think probably in South Africa doing I can't remember what would have been the first, but ~ there were some mountains kind of in near to where my parents live a bit up the coast and I went with two friends and spent a couple of days.
00:06:12.858 --> 00:06:21.262
we were c we I think the first gravel bike working trip would have been we were trying to scout like a 500 kilometer route for a race that I was gonna do.
00:06:22.185 --> 00:06:32.411
and we we made it like halfway and then I was with two boys and the boys felt sick and then we went home.
00:06:32.800 --> 00:06:33.752
no.
00:06:34.853 --> 00:06:36.766
But it was really fun.
00:06:36.766 --> 00:06:42.259
Like there's just something about my history was always like road, road, road, which is really nice.
00:06:42.259 --> 00:06:45.083
Like I'm I I'm not very good at focusing on things.
00:06:45.083 --> 00:06:54.891
And so like technical mountain biking was just always too ~ I was like, I'm definitely gonna break my neck if I if I like to do this for too long.
00:06:54.891 --> 00:06:57.574
And it's I'm also not a natural mountain biker.
00:06:57.574 --> 00:07:03.754
Like some people they just jump on a bike and they just like going down the single track without a second thought.
00:07:03.754 --> 00:07:08.117
Whereas for me it just it's not really like in my body to do that.
00:07:08.117 --> 00:07:27.870
~ but then gravel just being the perfect middle thing between that of like it's technical enough that you're having fun and you kind of feel like a kid and there's no cars and you really can like zone out and be in nature, but it's not so technical that you are at at really at risk of having some bad crashes.
00:07:27.870 --> 00:07:29.942
~ a great point.
00:07:29.942 --> 00:07:46.666
I do think the like bar like going from at least I came I started in mountain biking and then went to gravel and like the drop bars and the brakes and just like the geometry positioning, like that for me was like in descending, descending in particular, like on the drop bars.
00:07:46.666 --> 00:07:49.507
I'm like, this feels so weird.
00:07:49.507 --> 00:07:52.401
Like I like I feel like I would die on the gravel.
00:07:52.401 --> 00:07:54.788
I well, I go very slow downhill.
00:07:54.788 --> 00:07:55.750
I'll I'll say that.
00:07:55.750 --> 00:07:57.209
But ~ yeah.
00:07:57.209 --> 00:07:59.170
The mountain bike is I don't know.
00:07:59.170 --> 00:08:01.262
But yeah, depends on your like history, right?
00:08:01.262 --> 00:08:06.694
And like what you're used to because the the handling is so different on th those two different bikes.
00:08:06.694 --> 00:08:12.358
~ did you do or compete in any races in like gravel races?
00:08:13.132 --> 00:08:15.333
Done a couple, like none of the serious one.
00:08:15.333 --> 00:08:26.619
Like when I st when I start on gravel, but like this was I got into it maybe a a few years ago where there wasn't like a gravel world champs or anything like that.
00:08:26.619 --> 00:08:35.663
~ it was just so I've I haven't done any of the like Sea Otter or Unbound or the big mainstream ones nowadays.
00:08:35.663 --> 00:08:44.631
It was kind of like somebody's organized ~ 500k routes around the corner and then like 20 crazy people are gonna do it.
00:08:44.631 --> 00:08:50.495
So I wouldn't say I've like done hard competitive racing, but I've done a few Yeah.
00:08:50.495 --> 00:08:58.794
Well, like you said, I think like that is the cool thing about gravel biking is like you can get out and like still enjoy nature and the fact I I totally agree with you, be no cars around you.
00:08:58.794 --> 00:09:00.245
Like that's so nice.
00:09:00.245 --> 00:09:01.787
So nice.
00:09:03.068 --> 00:09:03.471
Yes.
00:09:03.471 --> 00:09:04.042
cycling.
00:09:04.042 --> 00:09:11.102
It's just got a little bit like I just don't wanna be on the road anymore.
00:09:11.102 --> 00:09:11.553
Yeah.
00:09:11.553 --> 00:09:12.464
It is scary.
00:09:12.464 --> 00:09:21.388
It is yeah, you hear too many scary stories and then yeah, every time I'm like trying to get from one like dirt section to another dirt section, I have to be on the road.
00:09:21.388 --> 00:09:27.510
I'm like trying to go as fast as I can to like cover the stretch because I'm like, I just don't it's too yeah, risky.
00:09:28.331 --> 00:09:44.443
okay, so you did w ~ the Egypt to South Africa Can you t what is the name of is that like a F K T attempt or was this your own like route or is this previously attempted and you're trying to by someone else that you're trying to follow or?
00:09:45.056 --> 00:09:51.419
Yeah, so Cairo to Cape Town is like quite a famous ~ route or like a thing to do.
00:09:51.419 --> 00:09:59.664
~ and in cycling, so I spent a year cycling up har like halfway up Africa and back down with my family, just like really slowly.
00:09:59.664 --> 00:10:17.861
And during that year, which was twenty fifteen, there were f three or four, I think it was even maybe four, men's record attempts to set an FKT ~ And the the first so the first one said in January, ~ and then the next one said it in like March.
00:10:17.861 --> 00:10:23.302
And then there were two more later that didn't manage to break the second guy's time.
00:10:23.302 --> 00:10:31.523
And so we were following all of this and I was like, like I wonder what the like I was a pretty like semi-decent ultra endurance cyclist.
00:10:31.523 --> 00:10:34.765
I was like, I wonder what the women's time is for this route.
00:10:34.765 --> 00:10:36.500
And then I found that there wasn't one.
00:10:36.500 --> 00:10:45.004
~ and then I started researching a bit more and it's like a very It's you have to follow like quite a specific route to get there.
00:10:45.004 --> 00:10:48.394
You can't just be like, okay, what's the easiest way to connect these two points?
00:10:48.394 --> 00:10:56.759
~ that like according to the record Guinness and the ultracycling record people, there's like all of these rules that you have to follow.
00:10:56.759 --> 00:11:03.231
~ and so I kind of started working towards I was like, that would be a really cool thing to to try and do.
00:11:03.231 --> 00:11:27.851
And the more that I like started, ~ trying to set it up the more I was like, this is actually quite a logistically I think to to just ride to just ride that amount of kilometers a day for like so the record holder was Mark Beaumont and he did it in 42 days, which is I think it it's like under 300 kilometers a day.
00:11:27.851 --> 00:11:33.886
~ forty two days, which I mean it's obviously still a lot of cycling and there's like a medium amount of climbing in there.
00:11:33.886 --> 00:11:38.927
But by ultra cycling terms, that's not Crazy.
00:11:38.927 --> 00:11:54.822
~ but logistically to somehow get through all of those countries and find food and ~ deal with all of that stuff, especially because I wanted to have support vehicles to be able to like just go faster.
00:11:54.822 --> 00:11:58.335
And then that ended up being the like even more challenging.
00:11:58.335 --> 00:12:08.028
And so yeah, I think what happened to me is that I got so caught up in trying to organize the logistics, it was like a~ civil war happening.
00:12:08.028 --> 00:12:11.981
Well, I mean, Ethiopia is still like the Tigre region is very unstable.
00:12:11.981 --> 00:12:17.508
And so the whole that whole border crossing was ~ like the month before we were gonna go, it was like, can we go?
00:12:17.508 --> 00:12:18.846
Is the border open?
00:12:18.846 --> 00:12:27.342
Now it's closed, now it's open, we couldn't get vehicles, so we had to have like two vehicles coming from both sides because we couldn't cross the border with the vehicle.
00:12:27.363 --> 00:12:34.293
Anyway, ~ and then I sort of s somehow just when it actually started on this the second day.
00:12:34.293 --> 00:12:59.195
My ~ I got very ill from w we think some sort of like thyroid thing that caused my whole body to get deregulated and then the symptoms of that was that my then body temperature went really high and my electrolytes went really, really low and then my brain spent up and then I was out of action.
00:12:59.195 --> 00:13:00.772
Yeah.
00:13:00.772 --> 00:13:01.774
Yeah.
00:13:01.774 --> 00:13:02.875
Shoot.
00:13:03.417 --> 00:13:06.721
And were you like so that was in Ethiopia?
00:13:08.066 --> 00:13:09.470
It was in Ethiop.
00:13:09.649 --> 00:13:10.173
Okay.
00:13:10.173 --> 00:13:13.534
like I think I was about six hundred Ks in.
00:13:14.875 --> 00:13:20.976
and so like halfway across Egypt in the middle of the desert.
00:13:20.976 --> 00:13:37.413
And ~ and then it was just like it happened very quickly, which is I guess the one th element of that that's relevant to this podcast is just I I would never have imagined how dangerous how and how quickly low electrolyte levels can hit you.
00:13:37.413 --> 00:13:46.702
I'm sure you've heard all sorts of stories of like you're feeling okay and then next second you're like I'm maybe gonna die Gosh, yeah, that's so scary.
00:13:46.702 --> 00:13:55.330
And then in a totally different country, like were you were able to get to a hospital in Egypt and get the care you needed at the time?
00:13:55.881 --> 00:14:28.282
Yeah, which was also lucky I luckily had a doctor with me ~ on my support crew who ~ if she hadn't been there, I'm pretty sure it would have unfolded very differently because we were in the middle of so we were I was riding at like midday and in going heading inland like ~ into the mountains desert area and felt like I was getting really hot and I was like I but it was like it was strange feeling.
00:14:28.282 --> 00:14:32.222
I was like I need to get out of the sun immediately.
00:14:32.222 --> 00:14:34.913
And then like the that wasn't an option.
00:14:34.913 --> 00:14:43.547
So we just kept going and then I noticed like I wasn't I think I I was only wanting to drink s plain water.
00:14:43.629 --> 00:14:44.403
Mm.
00:14:44.748 --> 00:14:49.082
and I would didn't want to eat anything and Tracy, the doctor, was like, You have please eat something.
00:14:49.082 --> 00:14:50.793
Like you can't ride until you eat this.
00:14:50.793 --> 00:14:54.033
And I remember getting these messages on my head unit where she was texting me.
00:14:54.033 --> 00:14:57.794
She was sitting on top of the car because the the cars were obviously going very slowly.
00:14:57.794 --> 00:15:02.096
And we had like ~ two police escorts and this like Land Rover support vehicle.
00:15:02.096 --> 00:15:10.078
And she was sitting there messaging me, ~ being like, You must dr I remember this one message that comes up that just is all caps, you must drink.
00:15:10.078 --> 00:15:13.239
Exclamation, my exclamation, my exclamation because there was like wind and stuff.
00:15:13.239 --> 00:15:17.477
And I just didn't want to drink my like special sports drink.
00:15:17.477 --> 00:15:18.337
Mm.
00:15:18.337 --> 00:15:28.312
and then yeah, just within a I got back, we stopped for food and I was feeling like really, really strange.
00:15:28.312 --> 00:15:30.904
I think I was crying, but not I wasn't sad.
00:15:30.904 --> 00:15:34.586
I was just like something like just randomly crying.
00:15:35.427 --> 00:15:43.110
and then I was but ~ coming from ultra sports I was just used to like your body does all sorts of weird stuff and you just ignore it and it goes away.
00:15:43.110 --> 00:15:46.368
And then I Stopped.
00:15:46.368 --> 00:15:55.753
I remember just stopping, I think at like five PM, just pulling over on the side of the road, like in the middle of nowhere, and being like, wait, okay, I need to stop quickly.
00:15:55.753 --> 00:16:01.046
And then within about five minutes, I was like, okay, no, we need to I can't cycle anymore today.
00:16:01.046 --> 00:16:02.628
We need to sleep here.
00:16:02.628 --> 00:16:08.840
~ and then being like, no, no, something is really wrong.
00:16:08.840 --> 00:16:22.302
And then I mean I couldn't I think this is also probably something that people with electrolyte issues have would go through is that you can't with a lot of the what is happening in your body is that you haven't felt that feeling before.
00:16:22.302 --> 00:16:24.404
So you can't articulate what it is.
00:16:24.404 --> 00:16:27.648
And I remember the doctor was saying like, is it your stomach?
00:16:27.648 --> 00:16:28.347
Is it your head?
00:16:28.347 --> 00:16:29.208
Are you feeling nauseous?
00:16:29.208 --> 00:16:30.059
Are you feeling dizzy?
00:16:30.059 --> 00:16:32.951
Like what like tell speak to me then tell me what's happening.
00:16:32.951 --> 00:16:35.913
And I was like, something's wrong, but I don't know what it is.
00:16:35.913 --> 00:16:36.700
Whoa.
00:16:37.326 --> 00:16:44.898
and I think what it was is that it was maybe that my brain starting to swell because it was I could feel that it was really serious.
00:16:44.898 --> 00:16:50.150
I w I was pretty sure that like I'm like think I'm gonna die.
00:16:50.150 --> 00:16:51.721
Like that does the feeling of me.
00:16:51.721 --> 00:16:54.153
Like something is is really, really wrong.
00:16:54.153 --> 00:16:58.515
But it was like ~ and then I yeah, I was vomiting.
00:16:58.515 --> 00:17:05.980
My we thought it was heat stroke, so I went and sat in a cold shower and my core temperature was like really, really high and we they were like trying to pull me down.
00:17:06.579 --> 00:17:16.576
but then eventually I passed out and luckily Tracy then had to figure out there were the there was like a closer hospital and a further hospital, but the further hospital was better.
00:17:16.576 --> 00:17:33.126
~ she had to like make that decision about what would be the and then yeah when I got there my sodium level was I think like 113, which is supposed to be a lot higher than that, I think.
00:17:34.407 --> 00:17:43.788
and then I yeah they put me on a drip but I was for like over twenty-four hours I was like completely like non-responsive.
00:17:43.973 --> 00:17:44.828
no.
00:17:45.470 --> 00:17:50.551
and that it was like very scary for everyone involved.
00:17:50.551 --> 00:18:03.719
And I suppose I'm like telling the story to make people aware of like how serious it can be something just as simple as like not having enough electrolytes in your body.
00:18:04.117 --> 00:18:06.663
So did they did they call it like hyponutremia?
00:18:06.663 --> 00:18:10.097
Were you kind of like over diluted with plain water?
00:18:10.810 --> 00:18:12.621
I I'm not sure.
00:18:12.621 --> 00:18:25.943
I d ~ I don't think it was it yeah, it could have been being slightly overdiluted because I hadn't drank that much ~ of anything.
00:18:25.943 --> 00:18:28.496
I hadn't I hadn't drank a ton of plain water.
00:18:28.496 --> 00:18:30.606
So but it maybe just the ratio was off.
00:18:30.606 --> 00:18:32.528
I drank a lot of coffee.
00:18:32.528 --> 00:18:36.511
~ but it was also my thyroid levels were really, really whack as well.
00:18:36.511 --> 00:18:39.711
So it could have been that and I have a thyroid issue.
00:18:39.711 --> 00:18:40.202
Mm-hmm.
00:18:40.202 --> 00:18:49.111
and they found they did a thyroid like scan and found that it was like scarred from a like~ inflammation or something.
00:18:49.111 --> 00:18:54.565
So it could have been that something set off my thyroid and then that affected my electrolytes.
00:18:54.565 --> 00:18:58.428
My electrolytes could have affected my thyroid like we never found out.
00:18:58.428 --> 00:19:11.893
I did months and months of testing in a sports lab afterwards with like salt testing and putting bits and barbs in me, taking blood, everything, and we never were able to say like, yeah, that's what happened.
00:19:11.893 --> 00:19:12.461
Hmm.
00:19:12.461 --> 00:19:13.162
Shoot.
00:19:13.162 --> 00:19:13.762
Yeah.
00:19:13.762 --> 00:19:14.884
It is scary.
00:19:14.884 --> 00:19:28.575
Nothing like that has ever happened since, or No, I've definitely had a few panic attacks since then where I like start to feel dizzy or I'm like I haven't had enough electrolytes and then I'm like, my god, is it happening again?
00:19:28.575 --> 00:19:34.727
And then I have a like a panic attack and then I'm like, was I actually were my electrolytes low or was I just stressed out?
00:19:34.727 --> 00:19:36.071
Like I don't know.
00:19:36.071 --> 00:19:45.960
~ but yeah, I but I to be honest, I've never I haven't really physically pushed myself that hard since then.
00:19:46.094 --> 00:19:46.693
Yeah.
00:19:46.693 --> 00:19:47.233
Wow.
00:19:47.233 --> 00:19:55.696
~ so you said you did some s sweat testing after the fact, it sounds like, to learn about your losses like sodium concentration in your sweat.
00:19:56.738 --> 00:19:57.498
That's cool.
00:19:57.498 --> 00:20:03.780
So now you So you're not applying it necessarily.
00:20:04.661 --> 00:20:07.792
and it was it was in a lab setting you said with the sweat testing piece?
00:20:07.792 --> 00:20:08.553
Cool.
00:20:08.553 --> 00:20:09.772
That is awesome.
00:20:09.772 --> 00:20:13.984
That could be some really like valuable data ~ to use.
00:20:14.409 --> 00:20:19.692
But you'll have to you have to get the number back and f figure out what it was to do that.
00:20:19.692 --> 00:20:21.614
~ that that is really neat.
00:20:21.614 --> 00:20:26.688
~ to do some sweat lab like lab sweat testing is like the gold the gold standard.
00:20:26.688 --> 00:20:29.500
That's the best you can you can get there.
00:20:30.080 --> 00:20:42.098
so since that event, any other kind of like longer adventures you've gone on since the ~ Cairo to K Cairo to Cape Town route attempt?
00:20:42.619 --> 00:20:52.557
Yeah, I mean I've done like a dozens of bikepacking trips like a week in Morocco or Slovenia or Montenegro or kind of all over the show.
00:20:52.557 --> 00:21:18.010
~ lots of bikepacking where it's been like long days, maybe like plenty of like 120, 150k days through the mountains, but with breaks, with hotels, with ~ croissants and not like I haven't done anything in a competitive sense, which is a completely different physical experience because I think you just don't have this stress.
00:21:18.010 --> 00:21:33.896
Even if you're doing really hectic things with your body, as soon as you start feeling like for me, if I'm like I'm I'm really not feeling it today, or something feels weird, or I feel tired, or I just need to stop for a bit longer, or I don't want to ride tomorrow, then I can just do that.
00:21:33.896 --> 00:22:01.847
~ and so at no point I I think just overall your cortisol is probably a lot lower throughout the experience because you don't feel the sense of like I need to keep pushing even if I start feeling bad and there's all of this expectation riding on me and the all of these other things that are just in your head that I think make the can yeah make things worse harder.
00:22:01.847 --> 00:22:02.605
sure.
00:22:02.605 --> 00:22:11.142
~ I mean what you just mentioned, like you know, bikepacking through Morocco and Sylvania, I think immediately my mind went to How do you like plan these trips?
00:22:11.142 --> 00:22:12.383
Do you share your routes?
00:22:12.383 --> 00:22:15.545
Because I'm sure so many people immediately were like, I want to do that.
00:22:16.049 --> 00:22:17.026
Yeah.
00:22:17.026 --> 00:22:24.270
so do you like how do you go about like plan are these like vacations that you get to bike pack that you like, is that how you plan your vacations?
00:22:24.270 --> 00:22:25.432
And it's a bikepacking trip.
00:22:25.432 --> 00:22:26.863
I've had clients where they're like that.
00:22:26.863 --> 00:22:31.326
They're like, Yeah, we plan our vacations because there's a race there that we want to do or stuff like that.
00:22:31.326 --> 00:22:33.616
So how do you go about planning those?
00:22:33.616 --> 00:22:39.451
And ~ do you share your routes or your like trip trip details after the fact?
00:22:40.096 --> 00:22:42.728
~ it everyone is so different.
00:22:42.728 --> 00:23:07.244
Like Morocco last year was my best girlfriends in Cape Town and somebody mentioned they wanted to do it and then it kind of grew and eventually there was I think like six of us that went and did that together and we did first like a hiking section and then 'cause one of the group is like a professional hike mountaineer guide and then we did the cycling because everybody cycles and then some stayed on and did a surfing trip.
00:23:07.244 --> 00:23:12.884
So that I think like as friends our And that group has done they cycle to Victoria Falls.
00:23:12.884 --> 00:23:15.486
Last l December they cycled through Namibia.
00:23:15.486 --> 00:23:17.926
So that's just how they hang out.
00:23:17.926 --> 00:23:25.740
but then like Slovenia, Slovenia was I got invited to do ~ a like a one day brand event.
00:23:25.820 --> 00:23:30.603
And I was like, I'm not flying with my bike and to just stay there for one day.
00:23:30.604 --> 00:23:54.273
So I just wanted to like my way of always like treating myself is to do like a little solo bikepacking trip and just me and my bike and If I wanna stop and film something for ten minutes, then there's nobody waiting for me or nobody being like Tigan put your camera away or like I just wanna I think just that freedom of and like being able to think and enjoy nature.
00:23:54.273 --> 00:24:02.729
But then like the Montenegro one was ~ Leo Wilcox had set up these like women's rallies, which at the time was Tamut.
00:24:02.729 --> 00:24:13.798
And so there was like fifty women, they just give you the route and we all went and did the same route over like a week, but everyone does it on their own at their own pace.
00:24:13.798 --> 00:24:24.537
And then I have in last year as well, we did me and Ola Welsh ~ did a something similar in Mallorca where we just said if anybody wants to join, we're gonna do this route over a week.
00:24:24.537 --> 00:24:28.179
And a handful of women came over and we all rode together for a week.
00:24:28.179 --> 00:24:34.384
~ which I'm doing if anybody wants to ride this year after the Women's Tour de France.
00:24:34.900 --> 00:24:45.851
~ I'm ~ gonna cycle back from Nice where it finishes, watch the last stage, and then cycle to Gerona, which is open invites.
00:24:45.851 --> 00:24:50.855
~ so yeah, so it's always different.
00:24:50.997 --> 00:24:52.017
So cool.
00:24:52.792 --> 00:24:57.237
Hey everyone, when's the last time you actually looked under the hood with comprehensive blood work?
00:24:57.237 --> 00:25:03.702
Most of you are training 10, 15, 20 hours a week, but have no idea if your body has what it needs to perform.
00:25:03.702 --> 00:25:05.324
Here's what we see constantly.
00:25:05.324 --> 00:25:17.493
Low ferritin tanking your aerobic capacity, vitamin D deficiency that's increasing your injury risk or keeping you sick, elevated cortisol from over-training, thyroid markers that are normal but not optimal for an athlete.
00:25:17.755 --> 00:25:20.260
So that's why we created our full athlete blood panel.
00:25:20.260 --> 00:25:34.480
We test everything, complete metabolic panel, advanced lipids, iron stores, vitamin D, B12, folate, magnesium, testosterone, cortisol, thyroid, insulin, hemoglobin, you name it, it's over 20 markers that directly impact your performance and your recovery as an athlete.
00:25:34.480 --> 00:25:39.881
It's $371 and includes the lab fee through Quest, and you can get tested as soon as tomorrow morning.
00:25:39.881 --> 00:25:41.921
Check the show notes for the link to order.
00:25:41.921 --> 00:25:45.141
Some state restrictions do apply, but it's available in most of the US.
00:25:45.141 --> 00:25:47.421
Stop guessing and get the data.
00:25:50.352 --> 00:25:52.154
And now back to the show.
00:25:53.569 --> 00:26:04.694
So with something like that, do you just kind of like, are you on the fly like or just like yeah, are you do you have a route where you're like, I gotta get to this like hotel or this spot?
00:26:04.694 --> 00:26:08.266
Or are you just like, I'm going, I'm going, I feel good, I'm gonna take a break.
00:26:08.266 --> 00:26:10.416
This is where I'm gonna find a hotel here.
00:26:10.416 --> 00:26:12.137
Like, how do you do that?
00:26:12.786 --> 00:26:13.896
It really depends.
00:26:13.896 --> 00:26:18.000
I mean, cycle touring or bikepacking in general is a lot easier than people think.
00:26:18.000 --> 00:26:24.556
But there's not so many like hard rules or principles because it really depends on like the vibe of the trip and also where you are.
00:26:24.556 --> 00:26:30.319
Because there's some places like if you're camping, then you have a lot more flexibility in general.
00:26:30.319 --> 00:26:34.493
~ you have to make sure that you're gonna end up somewhere where you can actually camp.
00:26:34.493 --> 00:26:42.630
Otherwise, like if you're in the middle of a really built up segment, then you might be find that like there's no campsites, there's no w forests or anything.
00:26:42.630 --> 00:26:51.196
~ but or you might be somewhere that's just really remote for multiple days and then you're like, well we need to get water and electricity.
00:26:51.196 --> 00:26:55.279
So we can't like you have to get to a certain point for the next three days.
00:26:55.279 --> 00:26:59.223
~ Europe in general is pretty chilled.
00:26:59.223 --> 00:27:25.387
Like when I traveling here, because I'm often f making content and I want to charge devices and things, I tend to just stay in hotels and what I'll do is like plan out my route and plan all the possible places to stay, but I won't book them until maybe like the day before, just in case~ I something happens and I get delayed by day and then I've got all these like the bookings that are all affected.
00:27:25.387 --> 00:27:28.055
~ That's smart.
00:27:28.055 --> 00:27:35.361
So when you're going and like doing a trip like that, a bike packing trip, what what does food look like for you?
00:27:35.361 --> 00:27:46.089
Are you like if you're in a hotel or are you ever in anywhere with your own kitchen, like or like an Airbnb style stuff or like prepping any of your own stuff for the road?
00:27:46.509 --> 00:27:47.920
~ often, yeah.
00:27:47.920 --> 00:27:50.171
I think that tends to be the easiest.
00:27:50.171 --> 00:27:52.902
~ is if you can get somewhere that has a little kitchen.
00:27:52.902 --> 00:28:03.477
~ but I but of often there's that's not an option and I just get like a cheap hotel and then buy ~ like ready made.
00:28:03.477 --> 00:28:11.680
My latest nutrition approach is to just buy like fruit and vegetables and pastries and chicken.
00:28:12.049 --> 00:28:12.411
nice.
00:28:12.411 --> 00:28:13.143
Yeah.
00:28:13.143 --> 00:28:15.729
Like from a grocery store or market or something?
00:28:15.729 --> 00:28:16.069
Yeah.
00:28:16.069 --> 00:28:17.070
a grocery store.
00:28:17.070 --> 00:28:20.471
~ I'll often w if I'm bikepacking as well, I'll often buy like protein drinks.
00:28:20.471 --> 00:28:27.924
I try and keep my protein intake pretty high ~ in life in general, but it's on bikepacking trips as well.
00:28:27.924 --> 00:28:42.421
I think it's the one thing that's easiest to sort of let slip because it's very easy to get carbs and fat ~ from anywhere, like whether it's a pastry or a sandwich or an ice cream or a steak.
00:28:42.421 --> 00:28:55.988
But in terms of g getting like yeah, just enough kind of semi decent quality protein ~ I think can really help like just have sus keep you have with sustained energy.
00:28:55.988 --> 00:28:57.939
And then yeah, fruit and vegetables as well.
00:28:57.939 --> 00:29:13.265
What I've noticed now, like why now I mostly will go to grocery stores rather than like a cafe is because to be able to get like yeah some apples or like micronutrients basically where Yeah.
00:29:13.265 --> 00:29:24.808
that I've noticed from my friends as well who travel a lot is that like by the third day of restaurant food, you're just missing that like fresh Yeah.
00:29:25.253 --> 00:29:31.217
it's it just your restaurant even if you're ordering like a salad at a restaurant, it tends to still be just like really heavy.
00:29:33.440 --> 00:29:39.691
and and it's and parmesan and or s yes, just like yeah, all the fats and stuff on there.
00:29:39.691 --> 00:29:55.092
I totally when we did our we did a Europe trip last year and I was we were like going through Ital Italy and I was like so excited and I was like, This is great and then I'm like, dude, there's no vegetables or like protein at like any restaurant.
00:29:55.092 --> 00:29:56.460
It's like so hard to get.
00:29:56.460 --> 00:30:07.314
~ and so yeah, we started going to like the grocery store and getting you know, yogurts and eggs and vegetables and fruit and like, yeah, it's totally was hard to get.
00:30:07.314 --> 00:30:12.636
Like my body was absolutely craving fresh produce and like fiber.
00:30:12.636 --> 00:30:16.650
Like there doesn't seem like there's a lot of fiber in restaurant food, you know?
00:30:16.650 --> 00:30:21.912
~ delicious, but yeah, I totally I totally get that.
00:30:22.843 --> 00:30:33.611
let's see, I also like came across a ~ a comment by you is I think you had said like ultra cyclists eat a you go to a petrol station diet at one point.
00:30:33.611 --> 00:30:42.363
So what like if you're find yourself only at a petrol station, what is your like things that you want to grab when you're there?
00:30:42.363 --> 00:30:44.661
I'll often go for like a protein drink.
00:30:44.661 --> 00:30:45.459
Mm-hmm.
00:30:45.964 --> 00:30:48.852
just smash like a chocolate protein milkshake.
00:30:48.852 --> 00:30:49.165
Yeah.
00:30:49.165 --> 00:30:54.167
And then I'm a big fan of like ~ a sandwich.
00:30:54.167 --> 00:31:02.291
~ just like a nice sound like whatever's the chicken or cheese and tomato or something like that.
00:31:02.291 --> 00:31:12.489
~ I'll normally grab a few packets of like haribo something if I'm on a bike hiking trip, just some like Easy sugar for emergencies.
00:31:12.489 --> 00:31:16.373
Although I try not to like subsist off Harry Burke.
00:31:16.373 --> 00:31:25.151
But definitely just having a a couple of bags for when you when the climb is taking like an hour longer than you thought it was gonna climb or something.
00:31:25.151 --> 00:31:31.626
Like I always make sure that I have food with me, no matter even if I'm just popping out for a half an hour ride.
00:31:31.626 --> 00:31:40.636
Like the number of times I have found myself being like, this would have been really uncomfortable if I didn't have snacks.
00:31:40.636 --> 00:31:44.178
~ like emotionally but like physically.
00:31:44.178 --> 00:32:03.821
I think I think one of the things people don't realize is just how much you need to eat, even if you're doing like just a two hour ride or like even as an amateur athlete, I think people will often say like, ~ you know what, I'm not a pro, so I don't need to eat food while I'm exercising.
00:32:03.821 --> 00:32:05.873
Or like before I'm exercising or afterwards.
00:32:05.873 --> 00:32:06.954
We're like that.
00:32:06.954 --> 00:32:12.211
You might not go as fast as a pro, but like your nutritional needs are not so different.
00:32:12.211 --> 00:32:13.048
Right.
00:32:13.640 --> 00:32:28.132
where I mean obviously also with bikepacking, I think you want to adjust for the intensity that you're riding at, because psych like cycle touring at twelve Ks an hour versus like bikepack racing at twenty-eight K an hour is gonna be different nutritional needs.
00:32:28.132 --> 00:32:33.412
~ but to finish your question about the the petrol station.
00:32:33.412 --> 00:32:40.154
~ I would say probably in Spain there's also a drink called Aquarius, which has like electrolytes in it.
00:32:40.266 --> 00:32:43.116
so I'll always smash like a two-liter one of those.
00:32:43.116 --> 00:32:48.260
~ and then a pastry for emotional support.
00:32:48.260 --> 00:32:54.518
~ you ever found yourself like running out of food between stretches?
00:32:54.763 --> 00:32:55.305
Yeah.
00:32:55.305 --> 00:33:02.237
I mean I think it's it's very common like it's almost inevitable that at some sometimes you're just gonna mistime it.
00:33:02.237 --> 00:33:18.546
You're gonna think often it's like you can you think, ~ I'm gonna I'll stop stock up at this shop 'cause like usually the night before in the morning you'll look at your route and be like, Okay, there's probably a little town there where I can buy food and water and a little town there and then you kind of a a com like plan for that.
00:33:18.546 --> 00:33:26.117
And sometimes, especially in Europe, you'll get there and be like, hmm, everything in this whole town is shut down for a mysterious reason.
00:33:26.117 --> 00:33:32.359
~ which is more of an issue with water, but with food as well, it can be not so fun.
00:33:32.359 --> 00:33:54.688
~ but what I have started doing is that I just carrying like way more food than I need to almost have like a couple of backup meals ~ with the plan not planning to like necessarily eat them immediately, but just for the exact event where if I do run out of food then ~ there's something there.
00:33:54.688 --> 00:33:55.338
That's smart.
00:33:55.338 --> 00:33:55.910
That's right.
00:33:55.910 --> 00:33:58.625
And how do you like to like transport your nutrition?
00:33:58.625 --> 00:34:01.269
Or do you have it like on a pack on your body?
00:34:01.269 --> 00:34:02.643
Do you like it on bike bags?
00:34:02.643 --> 00:34:04.536
Like what do you recommend?
00:34:05.361 --> 00:34:21.704
~ my current setup is I have a handlebar bag where I'll normally put in like my a sandwich or a pie or whatever like kind of meaty like more chunky thing.
00:34:21.835 --> 00:34:27.226
then I have my top tube bag where that whether that will be my like lunch or mid morning snack or something.
00:34:27.226 --> 00:34:39.211
And then I'll have a top tube bag ~ little bag that'll have maybe like jelly beans or dates or something~ that's I can just easily access while I'm riding.
00:34:39.211 --> 00:34:57.612
And then I'll have my like backup meals in my ~ seat pack under my saddle where which is like the least easy to access, but it'll be maybe like a second sandwich ~ and a couple of like energy bars or whatever else there that's ~ either for the evening.
00:34:57.612 --> 00:35:07.275
I've found something that's really helpful is that I'll try say for example at my lunch stop to actually buy my like immediate dinner.
00:35:07.291 --> 00:35:13.442
~ where because sometimes you get to the end of your ride and you really need to eat.
00:35:13.442 --> 00:35:23.260
Like you've been riding the whole day, you're completely exhausted, but you also are covered in mud and it's freezing cold and you wanna just get in the shower and maybe wash your hair.
00:35:23.260 --> 00:35:25.110
You need to put everything on charge.
00:35:25.110 --> 00:35:28.621
~ hang up your stuff to dry, like wash your bibs.
00:35:28.621 --> 00:35:37.199
Like there's so much stuff that you have to do at the end of a day where maybe the nearest shop is like a 20 minute walk and you have to get dressed into your clothes.
00:35:37.199 --> 00:35:47.036
So it might be that if you don't have food when you stop at the end of the day, that you it's like two hours before you actually eat, which is like terrible physically.
00:35:47.036 --> 00:35:57.378
~ so I find if at lunchtime just buying a couple of things that you can just like smash as soon as you get off the bike and then later you So get a proper dinner.
00:35:58.215 --> 00:35:59.608
That's a great, I like that.
00:35:59.608 --> 00:36:04.431
And do you ever do any ~ juices in your like bottles as well?
00:36:04.452 --> 00:36:05.934
I've heard people do that.
00:36:07.161 --> 00:36:17.666
I don't often put in my like I'll put electrolytes in my bottle or like a carb mix, although like on a bikepacking trip it's not so easy to carry like lots of powders and stuff.
00:36:17.666 --> 00:36:22.989
~ but if you find like little individual sachets that you can put in there.
00:36:22.989 --> 00:36:40.788
And then for ju in terms of like juice or coke or anything, I mean juice is really nice to just get like ~ micronutrients like but I'll usually just literally buy like a five hundred mole bottle and then down the whole thing ~ and not carry it with me.
00:36:41.016 --> 00:36:41.577
Yeah.
00:36:41.577 --> 00:36:42.077
Yeah.
00:36:42.077 --> 00:36:43.059
Awesome.
00:36:43.099 --> 00:36:46.889
okay, so I know you have something after this, so I do want to be mindful of your time.
00:36:46.889 --> 00:36:47.775
~ okay.
00:36:47.775 --> 00:36:50.827
It's I think it's not so urgent.
00:36:50.827 --> 00:36:56.190
They said they might push it back half an hour, but I just so that not super time pressure.
00:36:56.190 --> 00:36:58.541
and I did also tell that about that I'm here.
00:36:58.541 --> 00:37:00.692
So that it's fine.
00:37:00.692 --> 00:37:03.483
~ okay, so let's see.
00:37:03.483 --> 00:37:11.114
~ I do ~ wanna dive into a bit obviously of your ~ you so are you a a comic artist?
00:37:11.114 --> 00:37:17.155
Is what I am would you comics, yeah.
00:37:18.056 --> 00:37:23.940
Did you wanna t do you make some of them still and do you make your own ~ Like gear?
00:37:23.940 --> 00:37:28.775
Like is it like your is that your brand logo on your shirt you're wearing right now?
00:37:29.856 --> 00:37:30.797
Yeah.
00:37:30.797 --> 00:37:31.818
I love it.
00:37:31.818 --> 00:37:34.572
It's a little psych little bike says what could go wrong?
00:37:34.572 --> 00:37:39.844
~ do you so do you sell that stuff online?
00:37:40.246 --> 00:37:43.480
Where can people grab some of your cool stuff?
00:37:44.239 --> 00:37:46.769
Teagan Phillips dot com.
00:37:47.155 --> 00:37:47.943
Very easy.
00:37:47.943 --> 00:37:48.163
it.
00:37:48.163 --> 00:37:57.807
~ and then ~ I have here too like the ~ I'm gonna probably say say this wrong, but the sh Shiver Shiverstein.
00:37:57.807 --> 00:38:00.530
Shaverstein, yeah.
00:38:00.530 --> 00:38:01.664
Tell us about that.
00:38:01.664 --> 00:38:09.358
~ I mean that was just like a little adventure thing that's some of my friends and I set up in in lockdown.
00:38:09.358 --> 00:38:11.009
Like we couldn't yeah.
00:38:11.009 --> 00:38:21.164
do our like long adventures and we were all pretty keen to like do do something fun instead of just riding like laps around the block.
00:38:21.164 --> 00:38:29.507
And so ~ I I don't know if you were ever noticed like what during lockdown, this ever resting trend like really took off.
00:38:29.507 --> 00:38:30.210
Mm-hmm.
00:38:30.210 --> 00:38:41.998
so we had a bunch of girls that thought like well we should do a woman's only one and we all do it and pick a heel somewhere and ~ and then we so that's what we did.
00:38:42.197 --> 00:38:45.239
And then there's been like a couple of those since then.
00:38:45.239 --> 00:38:49.516
And now it's actually quite a common, like quite a lot.
00:38:49.516 --> 00:38:53.523
There's quite a lot of women's only Everest things that happen all over.
00:38:55.005 --> 00:38:58.407
and we are just lots of badass women.
00:38:58.594 --> 00:39:07.106
And so for the for the listeners, it's accumulating the height of Everest in a single day by either riding the same hill.
00:39:07.106 --> 00:39:12.784
Were you doing the same hill like up and down, up and down, or was the Yeah.
00:39:12.784 --> 00:39:18.739
an Everesting, you have to do like complete laps of the hill.
00:39:18.739 --> 00:39:23.454
So you can't like go halfway up and then turn around and then go the full way up and then turn around.
00:39:23.454 --> 00:39:34.974
It has you have to like pick your one segment, say it's like three hundred meters of elevation, and then you have to do the full thing every again and again, again until you've done it.
00:39:34.974 --> 00:39:35.603
Yes.
00:39:35.603 --> 00:39:38.791
~ how long did that take you guys out of curiosity?
00:39:40.237 --> 00:39:40.759
Yeah.
00:39:40.759 --> 00:39:41.626
Wow.
00:39:41.626 --> 00:39:43.510
morning to late at night.
00:39:43.510 --> 00:39:45.356
~ yeah.
00:39:45.356 --> 00:39:46.929
and like how did you pick that hill?
00:39:46.929 --> 00:39:51.414
Cause it's like you could pick a really steep hill, but then it's like steep all day.
00:39:51.414 --> 00:39:54.748
Or do you keep you pick one that's like a moderate incline?
00:39:54.748 --> 00:39:57.030
Like how do you choose your hill?
00:39:57.898 --> 00:40:04.309
Yeah, I mean the obviously the stronger climber you are, the steeper you you sh can go.
00:40:04.309 --> 00:40:05.112
Yeah.
00:40:05.112 --> 00:40:08.865
to cause you wanna yeah, be fast but sustainable.
00:40:08.865 --> 00:40:15.289
~ and so for the average cyclist, they say the ideal gradient is like seven to eight percent.
00:40:15.289 --> 00:40:23.025
'Cause if you go lower than that, then you're really gonna be out there for like forty eight hours and you're not supposed to sleep.
00:40:23.806 --> 00:40:28.827
so we found one that was I think it was like you know, maybe seven point five.
00:40:28.827 --> 00:40:31.628
~ and then we actually cropped it.
00:40:31.628 --> 00:40:33.759
So you can chew you don't have to do the full thing.
00:40:33.759 --> 00:40:36.480
You just have to have is commit to like a segment.
00:40:36.480 --> 00:40:41.371
So we thankfully cropped out the first bit of our hill that we found.
00:40:41.371 --> 00:40:46.934
~ which I think would have 'cause the thing that gets you is is the consistency of the hill.
00:40:46.934 --> 00:40:47.367
Yeah.
00:40:47.367 --> 00:41:04.329
So if you have like a hill, it might have an average eight percent gradient, but if there's one little part in the middle that just like flicks up, ~ That you maybe don't feel it on the first like four times, but by the twentieth time, you're like, no, is the wall coming?
00:41:04.329 --> 00:41:05.759
Like Yes.
00:41:05.759 --> 00:41:07.460
I could totally get that.
00:41:07.581 --> 00:41:09.153
That sounds yeah, that sounds brutal.
00:41:09.153 --> 00:41:12.780
And when you do that, you're each person has to get their own Everest.
00:41:12.780 --> 00:41:15.885
You're not doing it as a team to accumulate, right?
00:41:15.885 --> 00:41:16.173
Yeah.
00:41:16.173 --> 00:41:19.231
like a just all doing it together, yeah.
00:41:19.231 --> 00:41:20.282
Yeah, cool.
00:41:20.282 --> 00:41:21.052
That is awesome.
00:41:21.052 --> 00:41:25.251
~ okay, so I'm gonna do a couple rapid fire questions for you.
00:41:25.251 --> 00:41:30.400
~ what is the worst thing you've ever eaten mid ride out of pure desperation?
00:41:31.277 --> 00:41:42.831
There were ~ I'm sure there's some really terrible things, but I can't think I do remember having the most ~ terrible, disgusting protein drink once that I I don't think I could finish it.
00:41:42.831 --> 00:41:47.532
~ but nothing interesting, sorry.
00:41:47.532 --> 00:41:48.733
No worries.
00:41:48.775 --> 00:41:51.594
what's the one item you'd never start a long ride without?
00:41:51.594 --> 00:41:54.208
Just food in general.
00:41:54.208 --> 00:41:55.905
Yeah, keep the food coming.
00:41:55.905 --> 00:42:01.061
~ do you prefer gels, real food, or whatever you can find?
00:42:01.746 --> 00:42:02.809
Real food.
00:42:02.809 --> 00:42:03.599
Yeah.
00:42:03.641 --> 00:42:04.661
I think we covered that.
00:42:04.661 --> 00:42:06.581
You got the your fruit and all that stuff.
00:42:06.581 --> 00:42:07.690
I I love that.
00:42:07.690 --> 00:42:09.923
I mean it sounds like a sounds like a dream.
00:42:09.923 --> 00:42:18.588
Like the like you're saying, like little bike the bikepacking trips that you're talking about and just cruising, taking your own time, stopping at cafes, markets.
00:42:18.668 --> 00:42:19.889
I love that.
00:42:20.090 --> 00:42:25.500
have you ever done any like company coordinated like bikepacking trips?
00:42:25.500 --> 00:42:28.565
Cause now like companies are starting to like do that.
00:42:29.182 --> 00:42:30.193
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:42:30.193 --> 00:42:33.791
I mean it's not really bike packing so much.
00:42:33.791 --> 00:42:38.268
I think that's more just like bike tours.
00:42:38.275 --> 00:42:39.376
Yeah.
00:42:39.657 --> 00:42:40.518
That's true.
00:42:40.518 --> 00:42:41.800
It is yeah.
00:42:42.942 --> 00:42:43.757
Yeah.
00:42:43.757 --> 00:42:46.750
up and you're like, ~ a buffet for me.
00:42:46.822 --> 00:42:48.704
A massa masseuse?
00:42:49.284 --> 00:42:50.324
Don't mind if I do.
00:42:50.324 --> 00:42:53.807
~ yeah, those sound pretty epic.
00:42:53.807 --> 00:42:57.780
~ okay, well, I'm gonna jump back to your two truths and lie too.
00:42:57.780 --> 00:43:08.806
So you said you only ate ice cream for three days, that you broke your arm on a first date and finished the date and then went to the hospital, and that you're ~ 80% blind in one of your eyes from a disease.
00:43:08.806 --> 00:43:11.518
I thought that one was the lie because you laughed at the end.
00:43:11.518 --> 00:43:14.048
Which one which one was your lie?
00:43:14.753 --> 00:43:20.215
~ actually the first one I didn't manage to do a full three days of ice cream.
00:43:21.494 --> 00:43:27.056
By the by the middle of the second day, I was like, I feel really sick.
00:43:27.336 --> 00:43:29.987
Like I think this is too much.
00:43:29.987 --> 00:43:30.838
It was in high school.
00:43:30.838 --> 00:43:41.217
I remember so clearly being like, guys, do you think we were on a school trip, so like no parents, and I was like, I have never had this much freedom in my life.
00:43:41.217 --> 00:43:41.722
Yeah.
00:43:41.722 --> 00:43:48.065
only gonna eat ice cream for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but like soft McDonald's soft soups with like hero.
00:43:48.065 --> 00:43:48.590
Mm-hmm.
00:43:48.590 --> 00:44:02.166
And then sometime on the second day I was like, I'm I think I'm gonna be ill, like this is not ~ so you are blind eighty eighty percent blind in one eye.
00:44:02.173 --> 00:44:08.019
Yeah, I got dengue fever in the Maldives and ~ damaged my optic nerve.
00:44:08.019 --> 00:44:09.896
~ yeah.
00:44:09.896 --> 00:44:12.119
That's wild.
00:44:12.541 --> 00:44:15.670
Is dengue fever from a a mosquito?
00:44:15.670 --> 00:44:16.527
Mm-hmm.
00:44:16.527 --> 00:44:17.380
~ shoot.
00:44:17.380 --> 00:44:22.282
Are you s is there a like a vaccine or something you're supposed to get before k that's prevent.
00:44:22.282 --> 00:44:27.355
this was twenty eleven, so maybe now there's something.
00:44:27.355 --> 00:44:32.956
But at the time it was like ~ not really a lot that can be done.
00:44:32.956 --> 00:44:37.036
And the reason that I got so sick is that you're supposed to go to hospital.
00:44:38.617 --> 00:44:41.079
like at a certain point if it gets bad enough.
00:44:41.079 --> 00:44:47.690
~ like the I there was some other volunteers that I was with and they when they got it, they went to hospital and I got it like a month later.
00:44:47.690 --> 00:44:56.635
But I was travelling~ so I just didn't go to hospital until I was I'd like permanently damaged my body.
00:44:56.909 --> 00:45:01.481
So if you ever get dengue fever, get on that trip.
00:45:01.552 --> 00:45:03.885
So did you do you get like an actual fever?
00:45:03.885 --> 00:45:08.327
Like forgive my like I d never researched dengue fever fever.
00:45:08.327 --> 00:45:11.478
So like do you get an actual like elevated core temperature and get sick?
00:45:11.815 --> 00:45:22.083
Yeah, it's like it starts out in for I'm trying to remember what what how it was like for everybody, but ~ it kind of starts out as like flu and you're like, I'm pretty like malaria.
00:45:22.083 --> 00:45:34.461
I also have malaria, which is kind of similar where you just think you it's like a bad flu and you're like shaky and cold hot and cold and then sweaty and all of that stuff.
00:45:34.461 --> 00:45:45.829
But then I think for dengue fever it just gets like more that gets more and more intense and then you go on a trip and you just spend like a couple of days in agony of like getting fluids in your body.
00:45:45.829 --> 00:45:58.460
~ but then like it can get for me I noticed that ~ you get like spots and then also all your skin peels off.
00:45:58.666 --> 00:46:00.141
my gosh, no way.
00:46:00.141 --> 00:46:02.963
Which was like really gross.
00:46:04.297 --> 00:46:18.190
And then yeah, I got ~ I think for it was something like 10% of women get like optic nerve damage, ~ which can be treated with some success with cortisone.
00:46:18.190 --> 00:46:18.702
Mm.
00:46:18.702 --> 00:46:27.518
And then I went to I was in Germany and went to the hospital, and they were like, Okay, tomorrow we're gonna do a lumbar puncture.
00:46:27.518 --> 00:46:33.394
And then I Googled a lumbar puncture, and then I was just like, no.
00:46:33.394 --> 00:46:35.246
I don't even use that either.
00:46:37.518 --> 00:46:38.353
Okay.
00:46:38.452 --> 00:46:48.132
I really, really regret that this like I was like straight out of high school making terrible choices that have affected me ever since.
00:46:48.132 --> 00:46:49.134
Yeah.
00:46:49.134 --> 00:46:54.378
So did you like through the fever, did you just start to notice like you could see less and less?
00:46:54.378 --> 00:46:58.222
Or was it kind of like you woke up one day and couldn't see?
00:46:58.222 --> 00:47:01.773
of think it was waking up one day.
00:47:01.773 --> 00:47:06.655
~ because I remember for about three months, like my mi my I adjusted.
00:47:06.655 --> 00:47:23.280
So now I don't really notice it unless my good eye is like obscured and then I'm like, whoa ~ but at the time, like while my brain was adjusting to that, I've I was so miserable because I like felt like I just had something in my eye, like this.
00:47:23.280 --> 00:47:34.402
And I was like trying to walk around and I just kept like closing my eyes because it was so uncomfortable to see like and then I but then it it then it adjusted and it was fine.
00:47:34.402 --> 00:47:34.965
Wow.
00:47:34.965 --> 00:47:37.288
Gosh, the human body is really amazing.
00:47:37.530 --> 00:47:38.871
Really amazing.
00:47:39.012 --> 00:47:39.503
That's wild.
00:47:39.503 --> 00:47:41.679
I didn't know your whole skin feels off.
00:47:41.679 --> 00:47:43.121
That's crazy.
00:47:43.121 --> 00:47:43.891
that happens to you.
00:47:43.891 --> 00:47:50.891
I think if you get ~ the hydration through a drip, then I don't think that happens because I don't remember that happening to the others.
00:47:50.891 --> 00:47:53.478
~ Goodness, you poor thing.
00:47:53.478 --> 00:47:54.637
That is brutal.
00:47:54.637 --> 00:47:55.751
How long ago was that?
00:47:55.751 --> 00:48:01.070
Twenty eleven, so like fifteen ish years we are.
00:48:01.735 --> 00:48:03.760
and you did break your arm on a first date.
00:48:04.315 --> 00:48:07.916
Yeah, to be honest, like I don't know if he would call it a date.
00:48:07.916 --> 00:48:09.987
In my mind, it was a date.
00:48:12.128 --> 00:48:17.989
I was reading this guy to like ask him about some of his bike trips.
00:48:17.989 --> 00:48:20.130
~ so maybe I shouldn't call it a date.
00:48:20.130 --> 00:48:24.931
It was like a a social meet meeting for the first time, an attractive man.
00:48:24.931 --> 00:48:29.199
~ and we never saw each other again afterwards.
00:48:29.199 --> 00:48:29.887
no.
00:48:29.887 --> 00:48:39.742
But did were y you were on a bike and did you ~ during the and you crashed or ~ was trying to like he was going really fast down a hill.
00:48:40.594 --> 00:48:46.005
and I wasn't my bike slipped out on some wet patch.
00:48:46.032 --> 00:48:47.563
Yikes, goodness.
00:48:47.563 --> 00:48:51.606
But it was just a little little break or I mean you finished the date.
00:48:51.786 --> 00:48:55.338
Wasn't s ~ goodness.
00:48:55.338 --> 00:48:56.902
she's got a big scar.
00:48:56.902 --> 00:48:58.869
~ everywhere.
00:48:58.869 --> 00:49:00.101
It was no it was pretty bad.
00:49:00.101 --> 00:49:04.193
I was also in the hospital for like three days to have all this everything.
00:49:04.193 --> 00:49:09.545
So it isn't all of my fun facts are just about all of the silly things I've done.
00:49:09.545 --> 00:49:10.657
But that's about it.
00:49:10.657 --> 00:49:12.559
Like that's the full bit.
00:49:12.559 --> 00:49:13.800
on your Instagram?
00:49:13.800 --> 00:49:16.293
It says like your the stunt comment.
00:49:16.293 --> 00:49:17.211
What does it say?
00:49:17.211 --> 00:49:20.990
I I do my own stunts but not on purpose.
00:49:22.971 --> 00:49:23.601
So good.
00:49:23.601 --> 00:49:24.092
So good.
00:49:24.092 --> 00:49:26.585
~ okay, so what's coming down the pipeline for you?
00:49:26.585 --> 00:49:32.922
~ got any bikepacking trips on the calendar or anything this year that you're planning around?
00:49:33.360 --> 00:49:44.731
Actually, as of yesterday, I just agreed to do bike pack to the women's tour de France and now also bikepacking back from it.
00:49:44.731 --> 00:49:55.340
So we're gonna start in Munich and do a bikepacking trip with a bunch of women riding from Munich to Lausanne in Switzerland fun.
00:49:55.340 --> 00:50:01.362
and then follow the whole tour with Zwift ~ and ride Litup.
00:50:01.552 --> 00:50:05.306
and then finish in Nice and bikepack back to Spain.
00:50:05.447 --> 00:50:08.371
So lots of women bikepacking trips.
00:50:08.371 --> 00:50:11.101
If anybody wants to join any of it, let me know.
00:50:11.101 --> 00:50:11.983
That is so cool.
00:50:11.983 --> 00:50:13.938
When does the women's tour de France take off?
00:50:13.938 --> 00:50:15.431
Is it the same as the men?
00:50:16.172 --> 00:50:21.414
The yeah, the woman starts it's about the first to the the ninth of August.
00:50:22.067 --> 00:50:24.632
but there's some festivities beforehand.
00:50:24.699 --> 00:50:30.871
and then where can our listeners and we've shared your Insta a couple of times and but where remind our listeners where can they find you and follow you?
00:50:30.871 --> 00:50:31.992
~ on Instagram.
00:50:31.992 --> 00:50:37.344
And I'm just starting on TikTok now save as of as of like two days ago.
00:50:37.344 --> 00:50:40.101
So if anyone has TikTok, I think it's just Tegan Phillips.
00:50:40.101 --> 00:50:45.994
~ yeah, on on Instagram, that's that's the main spot.
00:50:45.994 --> 00:50:49.110
with TikTok do you have to do like completely different type of content?
00:50:49.110 --> 00:50:52.818
Or is it you're able to like post your same content over?
00:50:53.791 --> 00:51:00.108
I probably should make some different things, but I just have not been on on the platform long enough to tell you.
00:51:00.108 --> 00:51:01.539
If you have any tips.
00:51:01.764 --> 00:51:02.675
I don't.
00:51:02.675 --> 00:51:03.715
I don't.
00:51:03.715 --> 00:51:06.246
I my I like suck at social media.
00:51:06.246 --> 00:51:08.878
I'm like, yeah, don't ask me.
00:51:10.699 --> 00:51:13.942
but for our listeners, like I said, if you want a good laugh, go follow Tegan's Insta.
00:51:13.942 --> 00:51:15.262
It is fantastic.
00:51:15.262 --> 00:51:17.914
She's got some great stuff on there to give you a a giggle.
00:51:17.914 --> 00:51:19.385
If you're a cyclist, you'll totally get it.
00:51:19.385 --> 00:51:23.090
~ and then have a blast ~ with your bike packing.
00:51:23.090 --> 00:51:24.036
That sounds amazing.
00:51:24.036 --> 00:51:27.329
And thanks so much for sharing your your story with us.
00:51:27.538 --> 00:51:28.289
Thank you.
00:51:28.289 --> 00:51:29.139
Thanks for the chat.
00:51:29.139 --> 00:51:30.614
It was super fun.
