ÜBER DIESE EPISODE
A great geometric tattoo doesn’t just look clean in a photo, it has to move with the person wearing it. We’re spotlighting Mitch Koch from Sleepy Reaper Tattoo in Madison, Wisconsin, and the reason his large scale blackwork and dotwork feels so intentional: he designs with body composition in mind. Think of it less like drawing a pattern and more like mapping a structure across real anatomy, from the neck and throat to the back and spine.
We dig into a neck piece that threads the needle between mixed existing styles like lettering, realism, and color, then lands everything into crisp geometric linework that still feels seamless. The details matter here: how the design cuts around the "adam’s-apple" area, how the mandala-like forms sit on the throat, and how following the jawline can make the whole tattoo look deeper and cleaner from every angle. If you’re planning a neck tattoo, this is a practical look at what “flow” actually means.
Then we shift to a favorite back piece and talk about contrast, saturation, and why bold black can still show nuance. From big fields of black to intricate ornamental sections, the design reads like a single system rather than separate ideas, and it reinforces the value of patience, planning, and genuine care for how the client feels during the process.
If you’re into blackwork tattoos, geometric tattoos, ornamental design, or simply want to understand what makes placement elite, hit play. Subscribe for more, share this with a tattoo friend, and leave a review telling us what body placement you want us to break down next.

00:00:03.759 --> 00:00:06.240
Alright, guys, welcome to another day of discovery.
00:00:06.400 --> 00:00:08.960
Uh got someone really, really talented today.
00:00:09.039 --> 00:00:15.599
His name is Mitch Koch out of Madison, Wisconsin, from Sleepy Reaper Tattoo, which he also owns.
00:00:15.839 --> 00:00:22.559
His focus is large scale, black work, dot work, ornamental, geometric, basically everything I freaking love.
00:00:22.719 --> 00:00:23.760
Everything I have on my body.
00:00:23.839 --> 00:00:25.120
That's all I have on my body.
00:00:25.359 --> 00:00:29.600
So the way he structures his tattoo pieces is like an architect.
00:00:29.760 --> 00:00:38.240
He looks at the person or the client's composition, how their body flowed, basically how large or small they are.
00:00:38.399 --> 00:00:54.399
Um, and he basically maps out that tattoo based on that person's body's composition, which is really, really like it takes a lot of talent to do something like that because not everyone everyone can draw a pattern, everyone can stencil and do this and that and that.
00:00:54.799 --> 00:01:11.040
But when you get the I enough IQ or enough years of experience to really think about how this tattoo is going to be placed on the body by looking at that person's body composition, size, weight, and everything like that, that's when we get into the upper leaks.
00:01:11.359 --> 00:01:13.359
And that's why he's on Discovery today.
00:01:13.599 --> 00:01:25.200
He uses bold black precision line work, dot work, and body flow to create the geometrical pattern that will move with someone's anatomy.
00:01:25.439 --> 00:01:29.359
Uh, the best way to contact him is through his Instagram.
00:01:29.439 --> 00:01:36.640
Uh, he has got his sleeky reaper tattoo on there, also tagged, so you can uh hit up the Sleepy Reaper page or Mitch.
00:01:36.879 --> 00:01:41.040
Um, but yeah, this is Mitch Cosh and come back next time for our favorite pieces.
00:01:41.280 --> 00:01:46.640
Alright, guys, if you made it here for this discovery series, obviously you know we're covering Mitch again.
00:01:46.799 --> 00:01:51.840
At this point, I think everybody knows I'm sucker for like sick ass neck pieces.
00:01:52.959 --> 00:01:57.519
When the word tactician is brought up, you definitely think of Mitch.
00:01:57.760 --> 00:02:15.840
Now, this neck piece, you have to like applaud this man because obviously Homeboy has a lot of other tattoos mixed and range between color, realism, lettering, and somehow Mitch blended this connection, which you'll see at the bottom.
00:02:15.919 --> 00:02:22.240
I think I'm most amazed about, but we'll talk about one other between the lettering and his geometric work.
00:02:22.319 --> 00:02:25.840
He almost like bumps the lettering into his geometric winner.
00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:36.719
What he all he had to do was blend it, and he wouldn't even have to, but he takes it a step further to give it almost that like embedded look, that flush, clean look.
00:02:36.879 --> 00:02:40.240
And you could see it down if you look by the collarbone, I think it is.
00:02:40.319 --> 00:02:48.960
You'll see where the lettering and the geometric connect will almost like give it more depth by pushing those those little points a little bit further.
00:02:49.039 --> 00:03:02.719
And then the other thing that I love about this piece, besides his connection between the side of the neck coming into the throat and cutting the Adam's apple area, that like mandala looking piece, is gonna be the jawbone.
00:03:02.879 --> 00:03:11.039
The way he flushes around and does these lines up on the jaw and then brings it around the back of the jawbone, is so clean.
00:03:11.199 --> 00:03:32.159
Obviously, I tried to also do this in my neck work, and I think when you're doing these neck pieces, when you bring it all the way up to the chin, and then you follow that jawline up and around, it just adds so much more depth into the tattoo, and it you get a cleaner look all the way around, especially if you have a good jawline, you know.
00:03:32.319 --> 00:03:37.199
Obviously, that helps a little bit, but again, this is Mitch, and this is my favorite piece.
00:03:38.400 --> 00:03:42.400
Alright, guys, we're back with Mitch Koch from Sleepy Reaper.
00:03:42.560 --> 00:03:46.879
This is gonna be my favorite back piece that he's done recently.
00:03:47.120 --> 00:03:53.120
Can't even really say it's my favorite because there's so many tattoo pieces I love by this guy.
00:03:53.280 --> 00:04:00.560
I mean, this back piece is insane because you could see the what I talked about in the intro is up the bold black that he uses.
00:04:00.719 --> 00:04:13.120
It looks like there's maybe seven different shades of black in there, and I love how he goes from big piece to like some more intricate design little pieces, and then he has that mandala on the neck.
00:04:13.360 --> 00:04:18.160
Uh, it just blends beautifully, just like I said, about the body composition.
00:04:18.319 --> 00:04:29.839
He literally has those two streaking lines coming down right through the middle on the bottom of his spine down to his butt crack, which I'm sorry we can't show because uh we get taken down for showing butts lately.
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:35.680
Um, but this is this is just really just intricate work.
00:04:35.839 --> 00:04:39.360
Like you can tell he takes his time when he's doing this.
00:04:39.680 --> 00:04:49.120
He really, really, really fucking cares about what it's gonna look like, how the client's gonna feel, and just putting it into straight, beautiful, intricate tattoo pieces.
00:04:49.279 --> 00:04:50.079
Love this guy.
00:04:50.160 --> 00:04:53.600
I hoped one day get tattooed by him, maybe my back or stomach.
00:04:53.759 --> 00:04:54.319
We'll see.
00:00:03.759 --> 00:00:06.240
Alright, guys, welcome to another day of discovery.
00:00:06.400 --> 00:00:08.960
