Originally Aired: February 27, 1939
Lux Radio Theater #208, "Ceiling Zero," brings listeners into the dangerous world of commercial aviation, where experienced pilot Jake Lee manages operations at Federal Airlines. The tension escalates when hotshot pilot Dizzy Davis returns to the airfield, stirring up old rivalries and romances while challenging safety protocols. As fog rolls in and visibility drops to zero, pilots find themselves fighting not just the elements but their own pride and past mistakes. The drama intensifies when Texas Clark takes off with a student despite deteriorating weather conditions, leaving the ground crew helpless as they try to talk him down through the dense fog.
The story explores the conflict between daredevil heroics and responsible aviation as Jake struggles to maintain order while Dizzy's reckless attitude threatens both lives and relationships. With wives waiting anxiously and the radio crackling with increasingly desperate calls, the episode captures the raw danger of early commercial flying when courage alone wasn't enough to conquer the skies. The production features James Cagney as the brash Dizzy Davis, Ralph Bellamy, and Stuart Irwin as the ill-fated Texas Clark.
