So if you're ready to tackle the things nursing school did not cover, like how to build a career, trust yourself, and keep your passion strong, then get comfortable because we are about to dive in and make nurse life the best life.
00:02:31.319 --> 00:02:39.640
She's honestly one of my closest friends in the nursing space, and today I'm so excited to officially welcome her to the Life After Nursing School podcast.
00:02:40.120 --> 00:02:49.800
Julia is an ICU travel nurse, professional nurse life coach, and someone who is deeply passionate about helping nurses build careers and lives they genuinely love.
00:02:50.759 --> 00:03:03.240
Over the past decade, she's worked as a bedside nurse, preceptor, charge nurse, ICU nurse, and travel nurse, giving her a unique perspective on the challenges nurses face at every stage of their career.
00:03:04.120 --> 00:03:09.560
But what really sets Julia apart is what she calls her tagline, coaching with a twist.
00:03:10.040 --> 00:03:18.280
While many coaches focus solely on maybe your next job or struggling at the bedside, Julia's approach goes much deeper than that.
00:03:18.680 --> 00:03:35.159
By combining her extensive nursing experience with professional life coaching, she helps nurses uncover what's really holding them back, build confidence, navigate burnout and career transitions, and create a life that aligns with who they are, not just the title that they hold.
00:03:35.400 --> 00:03:40.760
One thing I especially love about Julia is how she meets her clients exactly where they are.
00:03:40.920 --> 00:03:51.480
Whether someone is feeling overwhelmed, stuck, burnt out, or simply unsure of their next step, she creates a coaching experience that feels supportive, approachable, and genuinely enjoyable.
00:03:51.640 --> 00:03:53.560
There's no pressure to have it all figured out.
00:03:53.719 --> 00:04:03.719
Instead, Julia asks thoughtful questions, helps nurses gain clarity at their own pace, and empowers them to discover answers that were often within them all along.
00:04:03.879 --> 00:04:09.320
One of the things I admire most about Julia is her ability to see potential in people before they see it in themselves.
00:04:09.480 --> 00:04:29.079
Throughout this conversation, we dive into what coaching actually is and what it is not, why so many nurses underestimate themselves, how to find the right mentor, navigate career transitions with confidence, and why sometimes the biggest thing standing between where you are and where you want to be is simply having someone ask the right questions.
00:04:29.480 --> 00:04:44.199
Whether you're a nursing student, a new graduate, or an experienced nurse wondering what's next, I think you'll walk away from this episode feeling encouraged, empowered, and reminded that your nursing career and your life don't have to fit into just one box.
00:04:44.680 --> 00:04:46.120
All right, let's dive in.
00:04:47.800 --> 00:04:56.120
All right, I want to give a special welcome to Julia Joseph, who is now a podcast guest officially on the Life After Nursing School podcast.
00:04:56.279 --> 00:05:01.639
I want to say before Julia even says hi, that she's literally my virtual BFF.
00:05:01.800 --> 00:05:04.279
Me and her have been friends for a few years now.
00:05:04.519 --> 00:05:07.000
And I am so excited to have her on the show.
00:05:07.079 --> 00:05:08.279
So Julia, welcome.
00:05:08.759 --> 00:05:09.240
Thank you.
00:05:09.319 --> 00:05:10.759
I'm so happy to be here.
00:05:11.319 --> 00:05:23.959
Okay, so typically with my guests, I like to start out with you just obviously introducing yourself and then give us kind of the rundown of your nursing journey, you know, when you graduate nursing school, like what kind of where you've been since.
00:05:24.199 --> 00:05:24.439
Yeah.
00:05:24.680 --> 00:05:28.359
So I became a nurse in 2015.
00:05:28.599 --> 00:05:33.799
So this summer, in fact, August 3rd to 5th.
00:05:33.959 --> 00:05:34.839
I can't really remember.
00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:36.439
Let's just call it August 4th.
00:05:36.519 --> 00:05:41.639
I don't know, is my 11-year anniversary of nursing, being an official nurse.
00:05:41.879 --> 00:05:47.239
So in 2015, I started on a med surge unit as a new grad.
00:05:47.399 --> 00:05:49.639
And I was living in a very rural area.
00:05:49.799 --> 00:05:53.319
So I was really lucky to get one of the new grad spots.
00:05:53.479 --> 00:05:57.799
They hired about 20 of us, and I started doing night shift.
00:05:57.879 --> 00:06:09.719
And I actually got hired on the unit I did my nursing school preceptorship on, which is why it's very important to get to know people when you're in nursing school and network because they will look out for you.
00:06:09.799 --> 00:06:12.680
And if you build strong relationships, that'll get you far.
00:06:12.839 --> 00:06:18.680
So that got me my first job, and I started, like I said, med surge nights.
00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:22.279
And within a year, I started precepting.
00:06:22.439 --> 00:06:31.959
And I want, I know this is a little about a little bit about me, but I want to talk in a few minutes about precepting and new grad stuff, because that's really important.
00:06:32.039 --> 00:06:33.079
So I started precepting.
00:06:33.159 --> 00:06:36.599
I've always loved teaching, coaching, nurturing people.
00:06:36.759 --> 00:06:45.000
And so I thought that that was a pretty good way to start to do that in the nursing capacity, even though I was somewhat of a new grad.
00:06:45.159 --> 00:06:47.959
And then two years in, I became a charge nurse.
00:06:48.199 --> 00:06:51.639
And then after that, I transitioned to the ICU in 2019.
00:06:51.799 --> 00:06:55.560
So I had been a nurse for about three and a half, maybe four years, went to the ICU.
00:06:55.719 --> 00:06:58.039
I'm a pre-pandemic ICU nurse.
00:06:58.199 --> 00:07:04.680
I always feel like I need to mention that because a lot of people during COVID became ICU nurses out of necessity.
00:07:04.919 --> 00:07:14.199
I did it pre-pandemic by choice, and now I'm still in the ICU, but I have since moved states, moved hospitals, become a travel nurse.
00:07:14.279 --> 00:07:15.479
I've done a ton of things.
00:07:15.560 --> 00:07:23.560
And then to further my education, I did a program where I learned how to be a professional nurse life coach.
00:07:23.719 --> 00:07:31.399
So that's why I'm here today to talk about my coaching business, how I support nurses, especially new nurses in their nursing journey.
00:07:31.639 --> 00:07:37.000
And I think we both kind of consider ourselves like big sisters in the nursing world.
00:07:37.239 --> 00:07:37.560
Yeah.
00:07:37.639 --> 00:07:42.279
And I love, Julia, that your background is ICU, where mine is ER.
00:07:42.519 --> 00:07:50.439
So it kind of feels like we complement each other when we coach together, which we have done, you know, on one of my platforms, which has been really exciting.
00:07:50.599 --> 00:07:52.919
Now, you mentioned you want to talk about precepting.
00:07:53.079 --> 00:08:00.359
I love that you were a preceptor at year one of being a nurse because I remember when I first started precepting around the same time.
00:08:00.919 --> 00:08:03.959
It really forces you to actually learn even more.
00:08:04.120 --> 00:08:07.319
Like when you're first done with precept, you're like, wow, look at everything I know.
00:08:07.399 --> 00:08:08.919
And wait, let me take it a step further.
00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:11.000
Like, why does that happen or whatever?
00:08:11.239 --> 00:08:15.159
And it really tests what you know and it helps you realize how much you've learned.
00:08:15.239 --> 00:08:18.439
And then you even can take that learning just like an additional step.
00:08:18.759 --> 00:08:19.000
Yeah.
00:08:19.159 --> 00:08:21.799
So to be a preceptor, you don't need to know everything.
00:08:21.879 --> 00:08:26.599
You just need to know who to ask questions to and then where to find the resources.
00:08:26.759 --> 00:08:32.759
So I started precepting naturally because at other jobs prior to nursing, I had also trained people at those jobs.
00:08:32.919 --> 00:08:36.600
And like I said, you don't have to know everything, you just have to know where to find the answers.
00:08:36.759 --> 00:08:38.840
So I started precepting at about a year.
00:08:38.919 --> 00:08:42.840
And I think a lot of people on my unit who had more experience than me were a little put off by that.
00:08:42.919 --> 00:08:43.799
They were a little surprised.
00:08:43.879 --> 00:08:45.240
They're like, what is this girl doing?
00:08:45.320 --> 00:08:52.440
You know, but it's like, you don't, you're not claiming to be the expert, but also the biggest precepting hack ever is guess what?
00:08:52.600 --> 00:08:56.440
Now you have two nurses to meet the needs of your team of patients.
00:08:56.680 --> 00:09:02.680
So you have hacked the staffing matrix, and now you're team nursing.
00:09:02.840 --> 00:09:08.759
And when you need your patient needs to get cleaned up because they've been incontinent, you have another nurse right by your side.
00:09:08.919 --> 00:09:15.320
When you need to do a med pass, one nurse can be assessing, one nurse is passing meds, you're tag teaming the entire situation.
00:09:15.480 --> 00:09:19.560
Maybe your patient is a feeder, someone needs a feed, someone needs to scan the meds.
00:09:19.720 --> 00:09:23.879
You do all of it together, and that is called a married preceptor state.
00:09:24.039 --> 00:09:42.840
So, one of the things that I would like to remind new nurses, whether you're in nursing school or you're a new grad or you're gonna become a preceptor, is that if your preceptee and preceptor relationship is not a married preceptor state where you're doing all the things together, that is a red flag.
00:09:43.080 --> 00:09:44.120
I do agree with that.
00:09:44.360 --> 00:09:52.200
That's really important is not to be delegated to do things on your own because you're still learning, and two brains are always better than one.
00:09:52.440 --> 00:09:53.080
I do agree.
00:09:53.160 --> 00:10:08.200
And I think, too, what commonly happens or should happen is that you're in that married state, but then the preceptor can sort of scale back as time goes on and allow the person being precepted to, you know, take autonomy and independence in their caregiving.
00:10:08.440 --> 00:10:14.840
And it actually reminds me of when I was a new grad, I had a wonderful preceptor.
00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:16.600
She was absolutely the best, Becky.
00:10:16.759 --> 00:10:17.400
Love her.
00:10:17.639 --> 00:10:21.400
And she, you know, we were in that married state and I would ask her all the stupid questions.
00:10:21.480 --> 00:10:23.160
I would tell her how nervous I am, this and that.
00:10:23.240 --> 00:10:24.280
She took me under her wing.
00:10:24.519 --> 00:10:27.000
It was a lot of work to get me up and running.
00:10:27.160 --> 00:10:31.000
But I remember, you know, so many weeks in, I became more and more independent.
00:10:31.160 --> 00:10:40.600
And that girl was getting married, and she sat at the nurses station with her bride book like magazine books planning her wedding while I was like doing patient care on our assignment together.
00:10:41.080 --> 00:10:42.600
But she was always available for me, you know.
00:10:42.759 --> 00:10:44.360
So she was like, no, this worked out well.
00:10:44.440 --> 00:10:47.560
Like it's a lot of work at first to really show you the ropes.
00:10:47.879 --> 00:10:53.160
But if it goes well and you have a good preceptor, you become more and more confident in your skills and independent.
00:10:53.320 --> 00:10:58.360
And then she was able to sort of sit back and literally plan her wedding from the nurse's station.
00:10:58.440 --> 00:10:59.400
So it worked out.
00:10:59.639 --> 00:11:01.240
What a gift to Becky.
00:11:01.560 --> 00:11:02.200
She's the best.
00:11:02.280 --> 00:11:03.960
I I love her even to this day.
00:11:04.120 --> 00:11:05.800
Um you still keep in contact?
00:11:05.960 --> 00:11:06.360
Oh, yeah.
00:11:06.440 --> 00:11:07.800
And she'll like like all my stuff.
00:11:07.879 --> 00:11:10.440
And yeah, she's the literally the best.
00:11:10.600 --> 00:11:10.840
The best.
00:11:11.080 --> 00:11:11.879
That's so cool.
00:11:12.040 --> 00:11:12.440
Yeah.
00:11:12.680 --> 00:11:17.800
Now, okay, I and I love that you started, I mean, year one as a preceptor.
00:11:18.120 --> 00:11:24.920
I remember you told me this story about this gentleman who was not doing well on day shift.
00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:29.160
And then you took him as you were like, I'll precept him on nights, right?
00:11:29.240 --> 00:11:31.879
Am I oh you remember that story?
00:11:32.120 --> 00:11:33.080
Yeah, you're so right.
00:11:33.240 --> 00:11:37.960
Okay, so that was when I was a preceptor in the ICU and I precepted a new grad.
00:11:38.440 --> 00:11:41.240
And day shift wasn't really working out for him.
00:11:41.560 --> 00:11:56.840
Definitely he had some barriers to, you know, as far as like confidence goes, and there was just some things that he was struggling with, but I didn't feel that the personalities of the nurses on day shift in that unit were really the best for him.
00:11:57.080 --> 00:12:00.200
I didn't feel like they were the right fit.
00:12:00.360 --> 00:12:08.759
He needed somebody who understood thinking outside the box because not every nurse is going to operate the same.
00:12:08.920 --> 00:12:16.519
So I think where I have strengths is I get to know someone, and then I get to know how they learn or how they operate.
00:12:16.600 --> 00:12:21.960
And then, like, I like to build teaching around that, or I like to foster their strengths.
00:12:22.040 --> 00:12:28.600
So, like, I just saw that he was struggling, and I my manager had brought it up to me, and she was like, What do you think about this?
00:12:28.759 --> 00:12:31.879
And I said, You gotta put him on nights with me.
00:12:32.120 --> 00:12:41.720
And then he ended up getting six months of uh training on new grab, but he was going to ICU, and that's a huge learning curve, and that's it's so cutthroat.
00:12:41.800 --> 00:12:53.560
And I would say that not a lot of people survived that, and he ended up doing amazing, and this was maybe four or five years ago, and he is still in critical care.
00:12:54.360 --> 00:13:05.560
He remained still in the ICU, you know, he graduated preceptorship, he's on his own, and I think he just recently switched to the float pool, but we are still in contact, and I'm so proud of him.
00:13:05.800 --> 00:13:08.680
And I just think you need to meet people where they're at.
00:13:08.840 --> 00:13:17.000
And honestly, that's a lot of what I do in my coaching practice is thinking outside the box, critically thinking, how does this fit this person?
00:13:17.639 --> 00:13:22.040
Because I think as a society, we expect people to be a certain way.
00:13:22.360 --> 00:13:23.080
Absolutely.
00:13:23.320 --> 00:13:29.400
They just don't all fit in the same box, and we really need to foster who the person is and factor that into their learning.
00:13:29.720 --> 00:13:30.360
Absolutely.
00:13:30.519 --> 00:13:33.960
And you know, even a great preceptor isn't going to be great for everybody.
00:13:34.040 --> 00:13:45.400
And there's going to be a different and I think that's what's important to know too is if you're a new grad and you're really struggling to learn with the nurse that you're with, it's okay to say, I don't think I have like the right match.
00:13:45.560 --> 00:13:48.920
And it doesn't mean they're not a good nurse or they're not a good preceptor.
00:13:49.000 --> 00:13:50.840
It's just your learning styles are different.
00:13:51.080 --> 00:13:55.879
And I think new grads need to remember that they're in the driver's seat of their career and their success.
00:13:56.040 --> 00:14:05.560
And it really is up to them to go to management or even the nurse residency program director and just to say, hey, I think I'm struggling to learn with this individual.
00:14:05.720 --> 00:14:06.920
Could I try a different shift?
00:14:07.000 --> 00:14:08.040
Could I try someone else?
00:14:08.200 --> 00:14:10.440
You know, it's nothing against them or whatever it may be.
00:14:10.680 --> 00:14:14.840
It's just I need to ensure that I am learning as best that I can.
00:14:15.080 --> 00:14:15.320
Yeah.
00:14:15.400 --> 00:14:22.200
And part of becoming a nurse is really understanding it's your job to speak up for patients.
00:14:22.519 --> 00:14:27.800
So just as much as it's your job to speak up for your patients, it's your job to speak up for yourself.
00:14:28.680 --> 00:14:35.560
And this is your shot at training, and it has to be a situation that works for you.
00:14:35.879 --> 00:14:42.840
So I say all the time, nursing is people think nursing is like skill-based.
00:14:43.080 --> 00:14:46.120
It is so much of navigating personalities.
00:14:47.160 --> 00:15:04.360
You become a master personality navigator, and you're navigating not just your patients and their families, you're navigating doctor personalities, chargers personalities, coworker personalities, all the personnel in the hospital, yourself and your patients and their families.
00:15:04.440 --> 00:15:09.000
So it you really become quite a master of multiple personalities.
00:15:09.240 --> 00:15:09.960
It's so true.
00:15:10.120 --> 00:15:13.000
And the hospital is a very stressful environment.
00:15:13.160 --> 00:15:15.960
So you're meeting these people in a stressful time.
00:15:16.120 --> 00:15:19.480
And many our patients are usually not their best selves, right?
00:15:19.560 --> 00:15:22.600
Because they're struggling on their own, on their own health journey.
00:15:22.759 --> 00:15:25.000
So you're absolutely right with that.
00:15:25.480 --> 00:15:31.800
I also I want to note too here that you started as a preceptor, obviously, quite early.
00:15:31.960 --> 00:15:33.800
And then you shared that a few years ago.
00:15:33.879 --> 00:15:35.080
You helped that gentleman.
00:15:35.240 --> 00:15:53.080
And I love that saying, I think it's Steve Jobs, where it's like you don't realize your journey or like all the all the dots connect when you're looking back, but along the way, you don't realize like kind of where you're headed or why certain things are happening to you, or opportunities are falling in your lap.
00:15:53.240 --> 00:15:57.000
But you get to maybe this new destination and you look back and it makes sense.
00:15:57.080 --> 00:16:07.080
And I think now you're a nurse life coach and you just telling these stories where you've been precepting, you you help that gentleman, you've been kind of doing a lot of coaching and precepting on the job.
00:16:07.240 --> 00:16:09.960
And now here you are as a nurse life coach.
00:16:10.200 --> 00:16:13.480
And I feel like it really is perfect for your skill set.
00:16:13.720 --> 00:16:17.720
And I want to know, like, can you share with everyone like what is a nurse life coach?
00:16:17.879 --> 00:16:25.480
I think I see like nurse coach get thrown around a lot now, but I don't think people really understand what it is and what that role looks like.
00:16:25.800 --> 00:16:34.759
Yeah, so I guess I want to start by saying that I feel like the word coach is really it's like oversaturated, overused, watered down.
00:16:35.080 --> 00:16:36.680
Anyone can call themselves a coach.
00:16:36.840 --> 00:16:41.800
I went to an actual school where you had to be a nurse to get into the school.
00:16:42.040 --> 00:16:47.639
I did actual training on theories and frameworks and how to ask great questions.
00:16:47.800 --> 00:16:51.639
And we did coaching labs, and it was a very like legitimate process.
00:16:52.040 --> 00:16:54.440
It was maybe six to nine months long.
00:16:54.519 --> 00:16:58.840
We had to do a certain amount of actual hours out in the real world with clients.
00:16:59.080 --> 00:17:04.680
I'm gonna start with what a coach is not because I think it's important to differentiate.
00:17:05.079 --> 00:17:11.720
So coaching is not therapy, coaching is not dealing with like deep emotional issues.
00:17:12.039 --> 00:17:17.639
Coaching is very solution-based and action-oriented, and it's forward-moving.
00:17:17.879 --> 00:17:18.599
I love that.
00:17:18.920 --> 00:17:22.279
Coaching is also not giving advice for me.
00:17:22.440 --> 00:17:35.160
What I like to do is foster a relationship with my client, get to know them, and really help understand their goals, their dreams, and then help them build the life that they love.
00:17:35.400 --> 00:17:35.639
Okay.
00:17:35.879 --> 00:17:37.480
Now, do you work with just nurses?
00:17:37.639 --> 00:17:47.240
Like, what is like are nurse life coaches just to help serve nurses that are struggling, or it really is the decision of the nurse life coach who to help and who their bases?
00:17:47.559 --> 00:17:53.079
That's a great question because I think using the word nurse in front of life coach is confusing.
00:17:53.960 --> 00:17:57.799
You don't just have to have clients that are nurses, you are the nurse.
00:17:57.960 --> 00:18:06.600
So the unique thing that a nurse coach brings to the table is their nursing expertise and experience as a nurse, but your clients can be anyone.
00:18:06.759 --> 00:18:14.759
And just like any professional, you can niche down the way that you want to and specialize your practice and work with a certain population of people.
00:18:14.920 --> 00:18:23.240
My clients are not all nurses, but I would say the majority of them are in healthcare or are nurses because naturally that's just who I gravitate to.
00:18:23.559 --> 00:18:23.799
Yeah.
00:18:23.880 --> 00:18:32.600
And I think as I had kind of mentioned or alluded to earlier, me and Julia have both done workshops together for nurses and kind of coaching for new nurses.
00:18:32.680 --> 00:18:52.200
And I have sent quite a few people in Julia's direction because I think once you hit a decade of nursing, and Julia, you especially have been in as a travel nurse in so many different healthcare environments that I think you have seen probably similar themes, similar issues that people have struggled with.
00:18:52.440 --> 00:19:07.079
You have, I think, a well-grounded point of view of healthcare, which I think is really helpful because I think when you start in nursing, especially when you have that limited experience, you really think like this is a big deal, or how am I gonna ever navigate this?
00:19:07.160 --> 00:19:12.519
When really this is actually quite a common obstacle that maybe we encounter, you know, wherever you're a nurse.
00:19:12.759 --> 00:19:17.880
Just because you learn something one way, that's not the only way that you do things in nursing.
00:19:18.039 --> 00:19:23.079
A different facility might do the same thing, but a different way, and you get to the same result.
00:19:23.160 --> 00:19:27.480
And I've been a traveler at facilities where people are like, that's not how we do it here.
00:19:27.559 --> 00:19:29.079
And I'm like, just relax.
00:19:29.240 --> 00:19:32.840
This is how I do it because it's within my scope of practice.
00:19:33.079 --> 00:19:37.559
And as long as you're not breaking any protocols, there's just multiple ways to do something.
00:19:37.720 --> 00:19:43.000
And so moving around to different hospitals and working in different environments, you see so much.
00:19:43.720 --> 00:19:54.519
And I still teach my so when I go to a new travel assignment, I get like one or two days of orientation, and I will do things on that shift that my preceptor learns from.
00:19:55.799 --> 00:20:01.799
Whether they've been a nurse longer than me or a nurse shorter than me, like they still learn from me and I learn from them.
00:20:02.120 --> 00:20:03.160
Absolutely.
00:20:03.480 --> 00:20:15.480
Yeah, I think what me and you have similar too is that in our nursing experience, we started out in one, you know, hospital and stayed there for quite some time and then branched out.
00:20:15.960 --> 00:20:24.039
For me, I was at a small community hospital that was that is now, I think, six or seven time magnet status and really made that a big deal.
00:20:24.360 --> 00:20:29.319
And the this small community hospital, I, you know, I still hold near and dear to my heart.
00:20:29.400 --> 00:20:35.559
I had great years there, but they were very much like, you don't want to go to a big institution because they don't care about you there.
00:20:35.720 --> 00:20:38.120
They, you will be just a number, this and that.
00:20:38.440 --> 00:20:51.079
And I took the leap to a very large level one trauma center academic facility and initially got a huge bump in pay, had so many additional educational opportunities available to me.
00:20:51.319 --> 00:20:54.200
And yeah, was it a different experience from a cultural standpoint?
00:20:54.279 --> 00:20:57.480
Like the floors, different, you know, different kind of nursing culture.
00:20:57.640 --> 00:21:03.799
You know, it was like definitely a big, a big pond and I was a small fish versus the other way around at the small community hospital.
00:21:03.960 --> 00:21:10.039
But it opened my eyes to the narrative that sometimes you get fed when you are just in that one healthcare setting.
00:21:10.200 --> 00:21:15.480
And then you take a leap to another facility and you're like, whoa, there's like different ways to do things.
00:21:15.640 --> 00:21:22.360
There are pluses and minuses to every work kind of work environment, and not to necessarily believe everything you're told.
00:21:22.519 --> 00:21:27.559
I don't know if you had like similar experiences when you left your initial workplace and and branched out.
00:21:27.880 --> 00:21:35.480
Yeah, I mean, the second hospital I ever worked at, it was that was my time to prove to myself how much I knew.
00:21:35.720 --> 00:21:36.840
And I did fine.
00:21:37.000 --> 00:21:40.200
It was a travel assignment in the ICU.
00:21:40.360 --> 00:21:41.960
I didn't know a single person.
00:21:42.120 --> 00:21:52.519
I was just getting thrown into this crazy kind of post-COVID, like on the tail end of COVID ICU setting, super busy hospital, really sick patients, and I survived.
00:21:52.600 --> 00:21:55.000
And after that, I was like, I can do anything.
00:21:55.319 --> 00:21:57.880
And I was so grateful I took that opportunity.
00:21:58.039 --> 00:22:11.160
I'm not telling everyone to go travel nurse, but I'm just saying that don't handicap yourself in your career by staying in the same place the whole time or the same unit or the same hospital.
00:22:11.400 --> 00:22:13.880
You can really learn a lot from moving around.
00:22:14.039 --> 00:22:21.640
And one of the best pieces of advice I got from one of my very first mentors in nursing, he was a break nurse.
00:22:21.799 --> 00:22:23.960
Some people listening may not know what that is.
00:22:24.279 --> 00:22:27.720
I was born and raised in California as a California nurse.
00:22:27.799 --> 00:22:34.039
So we had resource nurses or break nurses to give us breaks and cover our patients because we were union.
00:22:34.120 --> 00:22:35.240
So very lucky there.
00:22:35.559 --> 00:22:40.519
But one of my break nurses told me, he said, I switch jobs every two years.
00:22:40.680 --> 00:22:42.279
It is my rule.
00:22:42.680 --> 00:22:48.279
I change jobs, I change whether it be a hospital, a different unit, a different skill set.
00:22:48.440 --> 00:22:54.039
Because when I was actually training as a brand new grad, he was working in clinic informatics.
00:22:54.200 --> 00:22:57.720
And so he actually did my Meditech training as a new grad.
00:22:57.880 --> 00:22:59.640
Then a few months later, I met him and he was.
00:23:00.120 --> 00:23:08.600
Break nurse, and then after that, I believe he went to a different facility and did like their step down and ICU, and then from there, med surge or float pool.
00:23:08.680 --> 00:23:10.360
So he just switches his environment.
00:23:10.519 --> 00:23:15.960
He said it helps prevent burnout, it helps you from getting way too involved in the unit dynamics.
00:23:16.279 --> 00:23:18.279
You get to know your coworkers too well.
00:23:18.600 --> 00:23:21.240
And I just think that that was really great advice.
00:23:21.319 --> 00:23:23.319
And so I have actually done that.
00:23:23.559 --> 00:23:29.640
Now I did say I've been in ICU since 2019, but what I did is I switched a variable.
00:23:29.880 --> 00:23:34.360
So yes, I've stayed in the same specialty, but I went to travel nursing.
00:23:34.519 --> 00:23:38.200
And then I went back to staff nursing, and then I went back to travel nursing.
00:23:38.279 --> 00:23:44.840
So I've switched environments, I've switched hospitals, you know, gotten different educations throughout that whole thing.
00:23:44.920 --> 00:23:47.720
So I've always switched a variable about every two years.
00:23:47.880 --> 00:23:49.160
And I just love that advice.
00:23:49.480 --> 00:23:50.200
I love that advice.
00:23:50.360 --> 00:23:59.480
I think people are scared of change, but I also now that I have been in different environments doing clinical and you know, have had my own fair share of different different jobs.
00:23:59.720 --> 00:24:04.519
I swear the most cranky staff are the ones that have been there for a long time.
00:24:04.759 --> 00:24:09.799
Like, you know, because like you said, they're almost like too invested, and maybe they're too comfortable too.
00:24:10.039 --> 00:24:13.400
Being too comfortable is one of the most dangerous things you can do in nursing.
00:24:13.720 --> 00:24:14.440
So true.
00:24:14.680 --> 00:24:15.400
So true.
00:24:15.640 --> 00:24:27.720
When you're stagnant and you're not dynamic and you're not learning and you're not changing and you're not growing and you're doing the same thing over and over and over, you can become complacent, you can become lazy, you can overlook things that actually do matter.
00:24:27.799 --> 00:24:29.000
You can make mistakes.
00:24:29.319 --> 00:24:30.759
Yeah, you lose your compassion.
00:24:30.920 --> 00:24:33.160
I mean, there's like so many, so many issues.
00:24:33.240 --> 00:24:40.360
And I think the baby boomer generation really stayed at jobs because I do think they actually had decent benefits to do so, right?
00:24:40.440 --> 00:24:45.400
They had pensions and other things, but really most hospitals don't offer that now.
00:24:45.559 --> 00:24:53.400
And from a financial standpoint, after you get your first job, let me say, there's very little room for negotiating, if any at all.
00:24:53.559 --> 00:24:54.840
There really isn't.
00:24:55.160 --> 00:25:01.160
But after you get a year of experience, if you leave that hospital for another hospital, there's so much more room for negotiating.
00:25:01.240 --> 00:25:03.480
And then I heard similar advice.
00:25:03.640 --> 00:25:09.640
Every year or two, leaving one organization for the other, you really have to leave the organization for a new job.
00:25:09.799 --> 00:25:11.480
You can negotiate so much more pay.
00:25:11.559 --> 00:25:16.039
And actually, like over time, it's, I don't know the number, but it's like X amount, potentially more.
00:25:16.279 --> 00:25:23.720
So even if you're someone that's like, I'm just, I'm also driven by yes, new experiences, but also I have like financial goals that I want to hit, that really is the way to do it.
00:25:23.960 --> 00:25:24.279
Yeah.
00:25:24.519 --> 00:25:28.920
There's also benefit in staying at your certain organization for X amount of time.
00:25:29.000 --> 00:25:33.799
I think at my organization, first organization, if you stayed for five years, you were fully vested.
00:25:33.960 --> 00:25:34.120
Yes.
00:25:34.360 --> 00:25:36.840
And you're 401k and whatever they had contributed.
00:25:37.000 --> 00:25:45.480
So there are perks to, you know, you know, you have to know the individual perks for your hospital and then what your goals are.
00:25:45.640 --> 00:25:47.799
But within that hospital system, you can move around.
00:25:47.880 --> 00:25:50.039
You can even move to clinic, you can do outpatient.
00:25:50.120 --> 00:25:52.920
It just I think it just has to be within the system you're hired into.
00:25:53.079 --> 00:25:53.799
Yeah, that's true.
00:25:54.360 --> 00:25:58.600
And you can call HR, I think, for that information, or they can at least point you to a benefits person.
00:25:58.680 --> 00:26:00.600
So it's definitely something to consider.
00:26:00.759 --> 00:26:06.360
I know people who have left like months before being fully invested and not knowing that and lost money.
00:26:06.440 --> 00:26:09.079
So yeah, that's something to think about for sure.
00:26:09.400 --> 00:26:21.000
Now, kind of bringing going back to coaching, when we were talking about this like episode and like what we want to focus on, because clearly me and Julia can talk about literally anything, especially nursing.
00:26:21.160 --> 00:26:22.920
This could be like a four-hour podcast episode.
00:26:23.079 --> 00:26:25.240
We won't do that to you, but it really could be.
00:26:25.480 --> 00:26:36.920
You mentioned something that, like, actually, I want you to explain to me because I was a little bit lost about your coaching coaching style being like like jimmying from what are you talking about?
00:26:37.160 --> 00:26:38.920
So please like elaborate.
00:26:39.160 --> 00:26:45.240
Okay, for all of our listeners, I hope that some of you guys have seen the show shrinking on Apple TV.
00:26:45.559 --> 00:26:46.680
Oh, I just have Apple.
00:26:46.840 --> 00:26:47.960
I feel like I have everything else.
00:26:48.200 --> 00:26:49.720
Oh, I love Jason Siegel.
00:26:50.120 --> 00:26:55.799
Yeah, so he's the therapist, he's the main character, and it's about therapists.
00:26:55.960 --> 00:27:05.160
And so he has a certain very untraditional style of therapy that he calls Jimmying, because his name is Jimmy.
00:27:05.400 --> 00:27:19.240
And so what he does is he like gets out in the world with people and he sees them in their natural environment and he hangs out with them and he like notices their patterns and he challenges them to do something different or like reframe this or rewire your brain by doing this.
00:27:19.319 --> 00:27:30.519
And so he calls this technique jimmying because it's very like most traditional therapists would be like, Oh my gosh, no, you have to have boundaries, like that's not okay, it's not appropriate.
00:27:31.000 --> 00:27:39.400
Um, but when I was thinking about like my style of coaching, I was thinking about Jimmy and Jimmying because I feel like I'm very untraditional.
00:27:39.480 --> 00:27:41.319
Like I really like to think outside the box.
00:27:41.400 --> 00:27:42.039
I like to have fun.
00:27:42.200 --> 00:27:43.880
I become friends with my clients.
00:27:44.120 --> 00:27:50.120
I have a client where we sometimes do like, we won't even talk about it, but we do like a happy hour on our sessions.
00:27:50.759 --> 00:27:56.200
We'll be like sipping a beer and I'm like sipping, or we have like mugs, and I'm like, well, what are you sipping on?
00:27:56.360 --> 00:27:57.079
She's like, Oh, this.
00:27:57.160 --> 00:27:59.079
And I'm like, oh, mine's a margarita.
00:27:59.160 --> 00:28:01.559
Like, I just know that like that's her vibe.
00:28:01.720 --> 00:28:05.240
And so, like, we have fun and we have evening, you know, this isn't like at noon.
00:28:05.400 --> 00:28:06.920
We have like 5 p.m.
00:28:07.079 --> 00:28:07.720
or 6 p.m.
00:28:07.880 --> 00:28:08.200
calls.
00:28:08.279 --> 00:28:13.720
And so, like, you know, we don't make it a huge deal, but like we just make that a part of our routine and it's super fun.
00:28:13.880 --> 00:28:15.880
And I just like to meet people where they're at.
00:28:16.120 --> 00:28:16.920
I also think, too.
00:28:17.000 --> 00:28:20.759
I mean, now that I kind of understand the concept, because I was like, what is she talking about?
00:28:21.079 --> 00:28:23.319
You actually do this and you've done it to me.
00:28:23.400 --> 00:28:32.680
Like, we've been on like like just a like a brainstorming session or something, and I'll kind of call out something that I don't think I'm good at or something, and you'll actually be like, Well, what do you mean?
00:28:32.840 --> 00:28:48.039
And you'll like kind of challenge me, and then you'll you'll share with me what you've observed that has made me realize like I have to reframe that thought pattern because yeah, Julia really like you you do a great job of shining light on an area that we might overlook.
00:28:48.200 --> 00:28:54.360
And I can't keep come up with an exact example, but you have done it to me so many times where I've been like, wow, Julia, like you've you've praised me on my boundaries.
00:28:54.440 --> 00:28:55.960
And I've been like, oh, you think so?
00:28:56.039 --> 00:29:00.840
Like I've been better about like, you know, setting boundaries around around my energy and what I take on.
00:29:01.000 --> 00:29:05.319
And that's an area I always thought I was really bad at, and you've like commended me for it.
00:29:05.400 --> 00:29:09.880
And it had examples that clearly you've been observing it over time, and I'm like, oh my gosh, you're right.
00:29:10.039 --> 00:29:12.039
Like I have come a long way or whatever.
00:29:12.279 --> 00:29:15.000
I think it's human nature for us to be really hard on ourselves.
00:29:15.160 --> 00:29:22.759
And I think it's really special to build relationships with people in your life who are in your support system who can recognize the strengths in you.
00:29:22.840 --> 00:29:33.960
And that's what you're saying is that I feel like it's one of my superpowers that I listen to people talk about their weaknesses and I actually reframe them into strengths, and it's like not fake at all.
00:29:34.279 --> 00:29:35.960
I'm like, no, no, no.
00:29:36.039 --> 00:29:40.519
Okay, so for example, I have been working with a client who is incredible.
00:29:40.680 --> 00:29:41.720
I love her so much.
00:29:41.880 --> 00:29:46.039
I wish that she saw herself in the light that I see her in because she's an incredible nurse.
00:29:46.200 --> 00:29:51.720
And some of the places where she feels she's falling short are limitations of bedside nursing.
00:29:51.799 --> 00:29:59.960
It's not necessarily something that's like personally her, but she can't, you know, meet all the needs of her patients and she takes that as like a personal failure.
00:30:00.120 --> 00:30:02.039
And I'm like, okay, hold on.
00:30:02.200 --> 00:30:10.600
We need to distinguish this for a second because there is a failure of the healthcare system to provide you with the adequate environment to meet your patient's needs.
00:30:10.840 --> 00:30:12.039
You're not the failure.
00:30:12.279 --> 00:30:12.680
Right.
00:30:12.920 --> 00:30:27.480
So, really learning how to differentiate between is your job providing you with the opportunity to be the nurse that you want to be, or are you actually not living up to your job title?
00:30:27.640 --> 00:30:31.960
And most of the time, the environment is falling short and it's not the nurse.
00:30:32.200 --> 00:30:39.400
And we just have to figure out what values, what beliefs, like what strengths this person has, what's important to them.
00:30:39.559 --> 00:30:47.480
And then we have to find a nursing job that fits them so that they have better overall success and they're happier.
00:30:47.880 --> 00:30:56.519
And the we make the nursing profession work for them versus the nurse having to work so hard to make the nursing profession exist.
00:30:57.640 --> 00:30:58.279
Do you know what I mean?
00:30:58.600 --> 00:31:00.039
This is how Gen Z, I think, collapsing.
00:31:01.559 --> 00:31:01.720
Okay.
00:31:01.960 --> 00:31:03.319
You're like, what the hell is she doing?
00:31:03.559 --> 00:31:05.160
Okay, snapping.
00:31:05.559 --> 00:31:06.039
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:31:06.440 --> 00:31:07.160
Silent snapping.
00:31:09.400 --> 00:31:10.680
Okay, two things.
00:31:10.840 --> 00:31:15.000
First, it sounds like yes, what is in my control and what is out of my control?
00:31:15.160 --> 00:31:19.799
And understanding that and letting go of what's out of your control because it's out of your control.
00:31:20.440 --> 00:31:28.039
And the other thing is like that is literally my mission is to help people understand there are so many different roles in nursing.
00:31:28.440 --> 00:31:34.920
And if you are like literally your soul feels like it's being sucked dry in a role, that's not for you.
00:31:35.079 --> 00:31:37.240
But let me tell you, there's a hundred other options.
00:31:37.480 --> 00:31:51.799
But yes, you need to take time to figure out what's aligned with who you are in your values, if you can, before you take a new role, because the more, the closer you can match the two, like what is this job prioritize, and what do I personally want to prioritize in my job?
00:31:51.880 --> 00:31:56.519
And getting something that's aligned, I feel like that's that literally will change your whole life.
00:31:56.759 --> 00:31:59.079
Like you will be so much happier.
00:31:59.559 --> 00:32:06.440
And I'm like obsessed with helping people build a life that they absolutely love and a life that they deserve.
00:32:07.160 --> 00:32:07.480
Yes.
00:32:07.640 --> 00:32:11.240
Because I think I've been on like all different spectrums of that.
00:32:11.319 --> 00:32:19.079
I've been in a job where I felt like I was in prison and it was like sucking me dry, and I felt like I wasn't there for my kids, and I and it was it was horrible.
00:32:19.160 --> 00:32:21.400
And and that was actually the job that I was paid the most.
00:32:21.640 --> 00:32:32.279
And then I've like decided now I'm on this crazy different, you know, kind of unique path where I feel like I'm the most aligned in everything I do daily, and that gives me such a fulfilling life.
00:32:32.519 --> 00:32:42.279
When you were in that job where it was sucking you dry, did you need permission from somebody else other than yourself to quit that job?
00:32:42.440 --> 00:32:45.240
Like, were you I felt like I did.
00:32:45.480 --> 00:32:49.880
Like I had to make sure that my husband backed me.
00:32:50.039 --> 00:32:55.240
I had to make I had to get approval from my mom just because I knew that would make me give me the confidence to leave.
00:32:55.559 --> 00:32:58.840
But I knew in my heart I was leaving that job no matter what.
00:32:59.000 --> 00:33:02.279
But I wanted, of course, like that permission from outside, right?
00:33:02.360 --> 00:33:05.160
You know, support, which is kind of interesting thinking about that.
00:33:05.400 --> 00:33:09.400
It is, but it's also we are community-driven beings.
00:33:10.120 --> 00:33:12.279
Support systems are really important to us.
00:33:12.440 --> 00:33:18.600
And although we have the power to make that choice within ourselves, I think it is important for your community to back you.
00:33:18.840 --> 00:33:26.680
And I think a lot of times people are so worried about the people around them judging them or um being like, oh, you failed.
00:33:26.840 --> 00:33:34.360
When really it's not a failure, it's actually a massive success to put down a boundary and say, this isn't no longer serving me.
00:33:34.519 --> 00:33:36.279
I need to do something about it.
00:33:36.519 --> 00:33:41.880
And this is where the internal locus of control and the external locus of control play a big part.
00:33:41.960 --> 00:33:46.200
And I love this concept that I learned in nursing school that I have never forgotten.
00:33:46.440 --> 00:33:53.319
So internal locus of control means that I have control over what's going on in my life.
00:33:53.480 --> 00:33:55.319
I'm drive, I'm in the driver's seat.
00:33:56.600 --> 00:34:00.600
I'm making the choices, I'm happening to the world.
00:34:01.079 --> 00:34:01.880
I love that.
00:34:02.039 --> 00:34:06.360
And an external locus of control is the world is happening to me.
00:34:06.600 --> 00:34:11.400
I'm, I hate to use the word victim, but like you're not so much in control.
00:34:11.559 --> 00:34:13.000
Everything's happening to me.
00:34:13.319 --> 00:34:14.440
Woe is me.
00:34:14.679 --> 00:34:14.840
Right.
00:34:15.000 --> 00:34:17.639
I'm not taking, you know, it's like not being in the driver's seat.
00:34:17.799 --> 00:34:17.880
Right.
00:34:17.960 --> 00:34:21.319
And acting kind of helpless, like kind of like I have options and this is my life.
00:34:21.400 --> 00:34:23.319
And it's like you have options, you have to take action.
00:34:23.559 --> 00:34:26.440
I have options, you have choices, especially as a nurse.
00:34:26.599 --> 00:34:29.799
So we could go down a whole rabbit hole talking about that.
00:34:29.960 --> 00:34:35.719
But I love to bring that up because I think it's so important to people for people to harness that power.
00:34:35.960 --> 00:34:39.239
Yeah, make the choices and know that people are backing you.
00:34:39.319 --> 00:34:44.840
And if I'm the only one in your corner that needs to give you permission, I will give you permission.
00:34:45.079 --> 00:34:45.319
Yeah.
00:34:45.480 --> 00:34:50.440
I'm sure we can kind of swing one way or the other with that external versus internal locus of control.
00:34:50.519 --> 00:34:54.519
Because when I think of that experience for me, it was when I was a nurse manager.
00:34:54.599 --> 00:35:00.279
I had gotten my master's to get into this role that I thought I would sort of be in forever, right?
00:35:00.360 --> 00:35:03.480
Or continue to kind of climb the career ladder in management.
00:35:03.719 --> 00:35:07.880
And obviously it was a huge pill to swallow that, like, hey, I went back to school.
00:35:08.039 --> 00:35:13.480
I spent money, I spent time, effort, all these things to finally get in this role that just like doesn't serve me.
00:35:13.639 --> 00:35:18.199
And in the beginning of it, I was in nurse management for a little over three years.
00:35:18.519 --> 00:35:36.280
I think in the beginning, I was more in the external locus of control where I felt like it was like, oh, this job and this keeps happening and that, and oh my gosh, and this is, you know, and kind of making it about the job and all these things happening in the job that were making me unhappy when I think I finally realized like that's like those little things are not gonna change.
00:35:36.360 --> 00:35:38.599
And I, it's every week it's gonna be something different.
00:35:38.760 --> 00:35:41.400
Every day it could be something different that I could blame everything on.
00:35:41.720 --> 00:35:44.679
And there's always gonna be external factors that we don't have control over.
00:35:44.920 --> 00:35:49.400
Like there's always gonna be that variable, but it's how do you perceive it?
00:35:49.480 --> 00:35:51.400
And what is what how do you process it?
00:35:51.480 --> 00:35:53.240
How do you let it affect you?
00:35:53.400 --> 00:35:54.440
And what do you do about it?
00:35:54.920 --> 00:35:55.159
Right.
00:35:55.320 --> 00:35:59.800
And I think, you know, it was kind of like, well, I can't keep doing this and expecting a different outcome, right?
00:35:59.880 --> 00:36:03.320
So then it then it became like, what control do I have in the situation?
00:36:03.480 --> 00:36:19.079
And how can kind of like you said, like how can I be intentional to the world and sort of be in the driver's seat and control what's happening, you know, sort of to me, rather than it's like it sounds like when you were experiencing that, do you feel like you had to reevaluate your goals and what was important to you?
00:36:19.159 --> 00:36:21.320
Because it sounds like everything.
00:36:21.559 --> 00:36:21.960
Everything.
00:36:22.119 --> 00:36:23.480
Yeah, because it sounds everything.
00:36:24.119 --> 00:36:31.240
Going back to school and working this management job was like maybe a little bit of a yes, it was a career goal, but also financial goals.
00:36:31.720 --> 00:36:32.280
Oh, totally.
00:36:32.360 --> 00:36:41.800
And the thing I think that threw a wrench in it is during management, yes, there was COVID, there's all these other things, but I also really was in the thick of motherhood.
00:36:42.039 --> 00:37:06.599
And I felt like here I was, you know, going into the trenches of the pandemic, leaving my kids for long hours, feeling like I was always answering to staffing issues, patient acuity issues, all these things, had to report expenses for the unit and why are we over budget and all these things, and just also seeing my staff struggle so much in the job because we just didn't have the staffing resources and things we needed to do a good job.
00:37:07.000 --> 00:37:11.159
So it was like that moral compass of mine was like at the detriment.
00:37:11.320 --> 00:37:15.079
And when I was in the thick of motherhood, it was I I was driving to work.
00:37:15.159 --> 00:37:22.280
And I think this also started kind of my love for manifestation because every single day driving to work in my head, I was playing a movie.
00:37:22.440 --> 00:37:24.360
I was, of course, the main character, right?
00:37:24.599 --> 00:37:31.320
I was getting I was having a slow morning, I was getting a cup of coffee, I was making my kids, you know, pancakes for breakfast.
00:37:31.400 --> 00:37:34.280
I was getting them, I was like, you know, Susie Homemaker.
00:37:34.599 --> 00:37:40.760
And I was almost like in my head living this life of that was completely different than the chaotic life I was truly living.
00:37:40.920 --> 00:37:49.639
And I think that repetition of like thinking about what I really wish my morning and day would look like, that almost gave me the confidence to be like, wait, I want that.
00:37:49.800 --> 00:37:51.880
Like I want that version or close to it.
00:37:52.039 --> 00:37:57.960
And I can't be sitting in this same chaotic reality of mine and expecting that dream.
00:37:58.360 --> 00:38:05.639
Where are you at now that you have changed the trajectory of your nursing career and what that looks like, are you living that reality?
00:38:06.199 --> 00:38:06.920
Living it.
00:38:07.000 --> 00:38:08.519
Like I am living my best life.
00:38:08.679 --> 00:38:10.519
Like, is the income as good?
00:38:10.840 --> 00:38:11.159
No.
00:38:11.880 --> 00:38:14.039
But I have never been happier.
00:38:14.199 --> 00:38:15.079
And I don't know.
00:38:15.159 --> 00:38:29.800
I think that's why I'm so passionate about making these nurses as as early on as possible aware that they have choices and giving them the resources and things to really make them feel empowered in what job they they take and how they navigate throughout throughout their career.
00:38:29.960 --> 00:38:48.920
Because there have been many times where I have felt like I was in the passenger seat of my career, or kind of kind of living this life that was told to me, like, yeah, career, you know, go back to nursing school, get your master's, climb the career ladder, or become an APRN and all these things that you end up in this grind and on this trajectory that's actually not even aligned with who you are.
00:38:49.079 --> 00:38:51.000
So it's easy to get lost in that.
00:38:51.159 --> 00:38:51.960
It's also easy.
00:38:52.119 --> 00:38:53.400
I have so many things I want to say.
00:38:53.559 --> 00:38:56.440
It's also really easy to get lost in the identity of nursing.
00:38:56.599 --> 00:39:04.760
So you become a new nurse, you're in the hospital setting, or wherever you end up working, which is a total other tangent.
00:39:04.840 --> 00:39:05.480
I want to go down.
00:39:05.559 --> 00:39:09.159
Not everyone has to become a bedside nurse, not everyone has to go to the hospital.
00:39:09.320 --> 00:39:11.720
My nursing instructor called that sexy nursing.
00:39:11.800 --> 00:39:12.840
And I think that's hilarious.
00:39:12.920 --> 00:39:15.720
And it stuck with me because it is the shiny object.
00:39:15.960 --> 00:39:16.360
Yes.
00:39:16.679 --> 00:39:18.519
Hospital is the shiny, sexy object.
00:39:18.599 --> 00:39:30.440
It's like, oh, you get to work 312s and you get maybe higher pay, and it's really fast paced, and you get to leave, you know, work at work, and you get five weeks of vacation time a year, and you get your 401k and all yours.
00:39:30.679 --> 00:39:31.320
Well, guess what?
00:39:31.480 --> 00:39:34.760
A lot of that exists in a lot of different jobs.
00:39:34.920 --> 00:39:35.240
Yeah.
00:39:35.480 --> 00:39:45.000
It's just that bedside nursing for some reason is this big carrot that's dangled and it's glorified and it's actually really messy and can be really ugly and can be really hard.
00:39:45.320 --> 00:39:48.360
And some people are built for it and some aren't.
00:39:48.519 --> 00:39:50.760
And that's a whole other conversation we could have.
00:39:50.920 --> 00:39:51.079
Yeah.
00:39:51.320 --> 00:39:55.079
But you don't necessarily need to chase the narrative that we see on TV.
00:39:55.240 --> 00:39:58.119
I had so many friends that have become nurse practitioners.
00:39:58.199 --> 00:40:00.920
And let me tell you, they're working the ugliest hours.
00:40:01.079 --> 00:40:03.320
They are working so dang hard.
00:40:03.559 --> 00:40:05.720
And they're all entering motherhood like me.
00:40:05.800 --> 00:40:07.000
And it's it's not easy.
00:40:07.159 --> 00:40:12.840
And I think the label of nursing for me though, I definitely like I feel like I was like, hi, I'm Caroline, I'm a nurse.
00:40:12.920 --> 00:40:14.280
It was like, I was so proud of that label.
00:40:14.679 --> 00:40:17.320
Identity definitely, yes, my identity was that label.
00:40:17.480 --> 00:40:21.320
And the thing that finally challenged that label was motherhood.
00:40:21.400 --> 00:40:26.119
Well now I have two competing labels that are equal, equally like I was proud of.
00:40:26.280 --> 00:40:30.039
But like, of course, you know, nothing will ch replace the loves of your children.
00:40:30.119 --> 00:40:32.679
So I think that really challenged everything for me.
00:40:32.760 --> 00:40:34.679
I was like, wow, here I am, nurse manager.
00:40:34.760 --> 00:40:36.119
I'm gonna go be the next CNO.
00:40:36.280 --> 00:40:42.039
I mean, not really, but like that was my trajectory where these kids were like, you know, I was like, wait, my heart is over here.
00:40:42.199 --> 00:40:47.000
And I don't want to be on this, on this crazy hamster wheel of nursing management.
00:40:47.159 --> 00:40:52.280
I need a life where I can actually nurture my identity of being a mom.
00:40:52.599 --> 00:40:57.559
Yeah, well, that's just natural evolution of life and your perspective changed.
00:40:57.800 --> 00:41:07.639
And thank you for bringing it back to identity because that's where I was going with this, is that I think some people become nurses, myself included, and nursing becomes your entire identity.
00:41:07.880 --> 00:41:11.639
You have a new work family, you have a new schedule, you have a new routine.
00:41:11.880 --> 00:41:12.920
You're very important.
00:41:13.000 --> 00:41:15.400
What you're doing is very incredibly important.
00:41:15.559 --> 00:41:19.960
It is fast-paced, you're helping, you're making such an impact.
00:41:20.119 --> 00:41:24.280
You're you're making more of an impact than you will ever be able to understand.
00:41:24.519 --> 00:41:27.880
You're touching the lives of so many people on a daily basis.
00:41:28.039 --> 00:41:30.199
And those people may remember you, they may not.
00:41:30.360 --> 00:41:38.519
You probably will not remember them, except for a few cases here and there that stick in your mind, but you are making an incredibly large impact.
00:41:38.840 --> 00:41:42.119
And sometimes that becomes overwhelming.
00:41:42.199 --> 00:41:47.800
And I think that the thing new nurses need to really focus on is creating work-life balance.
00:41:47.960 --> 00:41:52.360
And I think a better way to say it is creating a life that you absolutely love.
00:41:52.519 --> 00:41:54.679
And it can't just be centered around nursing.
00:41:54.840 --> 00:41:57.159
Nursing is your job, it's not your life.
00:41:57.480 --> 00:42:04.840
I think it's very common for people to fall into this pattern of picking up overtime and maybe hanging out with your work friends.
00:42:04.920 --> 00:42:10.519
And that's fine for a season, but you you don't need to be in that season all the time.
00:42:10.679 --> 00:42:17.960
You need hobbies, you need a support system, you need a well-rounded life because otherwise you're just gonna burn out.
00:42:18.280 --> 00:42:19.000
I totally agree.
00:42:19.320 --> 00:42:20.280
And then what was the point?
00:42:20.519 --> 00:42:21.880
Yeah, what was the point?
00:42:22.199 --> 00:42:32.280
I know, and I I think uh too, the media they really glorify, like if you think of Grey's Anatomy, they show these people living at the hospital and saving lives and all these crazy experiences.
00:42:32.440 --> 00:42:40.199
And yes, it's an adrenaline rush, but we chase that version of what we think we're gonna love of reality, and it and it really isn't that.
00:42:40.519 --> 00:42:49.000
I also do think that Gen Z is much better at uh basically making their work uh fit their life.
00:42:49.159 --> 00:42:56.280
And I had Matt Burnt on the show, he is the head of Job Search Academy, I believe it is, at Indeed.
00:42:56.360 --> 00:43:04.039
And he said, like, there's evidence that Gen Z is really good at being like, well, how you know, how is this job going to fit into my life?
00:43:04.199 --> 00:43:11.639
Where I do feel like most nurses have really been like, I'm a nurse first, and how can I make my life revolve around my career?
00:43:11.960 --> 00:43:13.960
Yeah, it really should be the other way around.
00:43:14.280 --> 00:43:14.519
Yeah.
00:43:15.159 --> 00:43:27.480
I want to tell a story, and I don't know if you're gonna ask me about this, but I had this defining moment where I was sitting on my front porch or I was turning 33, and I told myself this was gonna be my year of yes.
00:43:27.800 --> 00:43:28.519
Oh, yes.
00:43:28.599 --> 00:43:29.240
I want to talk about this.
00:43:29.400 --> 00:43:30.599
Yes, yes, yes.
00:43:31.000 --> 00:43:31.639
Yes.
00:43:33.320 --> 00:43:37.800
Um and this is just kind of goes along with my whole life philosophy.
00:43:37.960 --> 00:43:40.280
I lost my mom when I was a teenager.
00:43:40.519 --> 00:43:47.960
She died pretty suddenly, and I've I've endured quite a few personal losses of people close to me, and life is just really short.
00:43:48.119 --> 00:43:58.360
And so I think that's also why I'm really passionate about helping people have great balance in their life and enjoy their life and travel and build a career that works for them and not that they drown in.
00:43:58.440 --> 00:44:00.599
And so, my year of yes, I was 33.
00:44:00.679 --> 00:44:05.400
I remember exactly where I was sitting in my front yard, beautiful front yard at this rental home.
00:44:05.480 --> 00:44:12.519
And I just had this moment of reflection and I told myself, I'm just gonna say yes to every single opportunity that comes my way.
00:44:12.840 --> 00:44:14.280
Like professional and personal.
00:44:14.519 --> 00:44:15.800
Yeah, everything.
00:44:16.199 --> 00:44:16.760
Wow.
00:44:17.320 --> 00:44:18.599
How did that go?
00:44:19.240 --> 00:44:24.199
Um, I found my dog who was astray, and I ended up keeping him.
00:44:24.519 --> 00:44:25.400
Because you had to say yes.
00:44:25.880 --> 00:44:30.760
Then I bought him a house because obviously yes, and I said yes.
00:44:31.240 --> 00:44:32.760
I bought us a house.
00:44:32.920 --> 00:44:35.639
Um, the opportunity just kind of came up.
00:44:35.720 --> 00:44:36.920
I toured one home.
00:44:37.079 --> 00:44:40.519
I knew what neighborhood I liked and kind of what price range I wanted to be in.
00:44:40.599 --> 00:44:45.159
I went and looked at it, it had great natural light, and the redwood forest was right behind it.
00:44:45.240 --> 00:44:46.519
And I said, This is my house.
00:44:46.599 --> 00:44:47.880
I'm gonna buy this.
00:44:48.199 --> 00:44:52.119
And I said yes to professional opportunities.
00:44:52.280 --> 00:44:54.039
I said yes to travel.
00:44:54.360 --> 00:44:57.960
I met the man that is now my life partner.
00:44:58.280 --> 00:44:59.720
I don't know, I just said yes to everything.
00:45:00.119 --> 00:45:00.280
Everything.
00:45:00.360 --> 00:45:04.440
And it's like, I think it's just a reminder to invest in yourself.
00:45:04.920 --> 00:45:09.559
I think we spend so much time digging our heels in and resisting.
00:45:10.119 --> 00:45:12.039
And it keeps us comfortable and safe.
00:45:12.519 --> 00:45:20.760
Yeah, we are hardwired to resist change because it's scary and we want to stay in this like safety zone.
00:45:21.000 --> 00:45:30.440
And so I think it's just a really good example of how you can tell your brain or tell yourself to say yes.
00:45:30.599 --> 00:45:35.960
Take these opportunities, invest in yourself, grow, because what's the worst that's going to happen?
00:45:36.599 --> 00:45:36.920
Seriously.
00:45:37.079 --> 00:45:37.720
No, I love that.
00:45:37.800 --> 00:45:41.639
I even think like this year, my word of the year has been like ease.
00:45:42.760 --> 00:45:53.880
And I kind of feel like, okay, if something doesn't flow easily, or if I feel like I'm chasing something that is constantly just like there's resistance there, then I'm not going to put my energy in that direction.
00:45:54.119 --> 00:46:05.079
But if something sort of falls in my lap, I'm not saying whatever it is is going to be easy, but if the if the opportunity clicks in the place, like I recently won't needed to get in touch with more tech people.
00:46:05.240 --> 00:46:09.480
And I'm not kidding, I asked ChatGPT, like, okay, I want to network with tech people.
00:46:09.639 --> 00:46:10.360
How do I do that?
00:46:10.519 --> 00:46:17.800
And it was like, well, funny that you should ask that because next week is tech week in your state and everything's free and you just show up.
00:46:17.880 --> 00:46:19.480
And I was like, What timing?
00:46:19.720 --> 00:46:19.960
Right?
00:46:20.039 --> 00:46:21.720
And I'm like, okay, that's ease, right?
00:46:21.800 --> 00:46:27.400
Like, was it walking into those events being like, hi, I'm Caroline, and I literally don't know anything about tech?
00:46:27.559 --> 00:46:31.240
No, but I feel like it's already opened so many doors.
00:46:31.559 --> 00:46:36.360
So if things are sort of naturally falling into place, yes, you need to have action behind it.
00:46:36.519 --> 00:46:38.760
Like to me, it's like, okay, you're moving in the right direction.
00:46:39.000 --> 00:46:48.280
Sort of kind of like your yes, where okay, if there's an opportunity, you say yes to it and it's going to move you in a certain direction rather than constantly chasing and forcing.
00:46:48.920 --> 00:46:49.159
Yeah.
00:46:49.639 --> 00:46:50.760
Those go really well together.
00:46:51.320 --> 00:46:51.880
They really do.
00:46:52.280 --> 00:46:53.079
Yeah, I love that.
00:46:53.480 --> 00:46:54.679
Thanks for sharing that.
00:46:54.920 --> 00:46:55.880
I'm coaching you now.
00:46:56.039 --> 00:46:56.599
No kidding.
00:46:57.559 --> 00:46:58.199
I need it.
00:46:58.679 --> 00:46:59.960
Um we all need it.
00:47:00.440 --> 00:47:01.079
We do need it.
00:47:01.240 --> 00:47:01.639
I love that.
00:47:01.720 --> 00:47:10.440
And I do, I do think saying yes, like I mean, I look back on my life and there are certain things that I actually was like, I don't think I should say, I don't think I should do it.
00:47:10.519 --> 00:47:12.840
And then I do it and I'm like, thank God I did it.
00:47:13.240 --> 00:47:16.679
And there's not anything that I'm like, why did I say yes to that?
00:47:16.760 --> 00:47:18.440
That was such a huge waste or a mistake.
00:47:18.599 --> 00:47:19.000
I don't know.
00:47:19.079 --> 00:47:27.400
I I feel like, like kind of like you said, even if you say yes at something and it doesn't pan out to something big, great, and beautiful, it was probably a lesson that you learned in there.
00:47:27.960 --> 00:47:32.840
Or some kind of value that maybe it's not a tangible, you know, monetary value or whatever.
00:47:32.920 --> 00:47:34.599
But I feel like it teaches you something.
00:47:35.159 --> 00:47:35.480
Yeah.
00:47:35.639 --> 00:47:39.159
I think avoiding resistance is always the best path.
00:47:39.720 --> 00:47:39.880
Yeah.
00:47:39.960 --> 00:47:45.240
And it's like if something, if there is resistance in a certain direction, like but that's also a message too.
00:47:45.320 --> 00:47:45.800
Like that direction.
00:47:46.039 --> 00:47:46.599
Let me talk about that.
00:47:47.320 --> 00:47:47.960
Let's talk about that.
00:47:48.039 --> 00:47:48.760
Well, you know what I mean?
00:47:48.840 --> 00:47:49.960
Like, what is that resistance?
00:47:50.119 --> 00:47:51.480
Why do you feel that way?
00:47:51.880 --> 00:48:01.159
Um one thing also that coaching is not, because I feel like this kind of plays in what we're talking about, is it's not fixing anything and it's not giving advice.
00:48:01.320 --> 00:48:08.280
Like we're not fixing if you're feeling that resistance, like we don't necessarily need to fix it, we just need to understand more about it.
00:48:08.599 --> 00:48:11.720
Sort of like gather more evidence and like and how to move around it.
00:48:12.920 --> 00:48:13.720
I like that a lot.
00:48:13.960 --> 00:48:14.840
And how to move forward.
00:48:15.159 --> 00:48:18.199
Obviously, continuing to circle around coaching.
00:48:18.360 --> 00:48:20.760
Like, who would you say coaching is for?
00:48:20.920 --> 00:48:22.199
Like, who is a great person?
00:48:22.360 --> 00:48:26.280
You're like, yeah, you'd be a good client for coaching, like you'd benefit a lot from coaching.
00:48:26.760 --> 00:48:44.119
I think everybody can benefit from coaching because everybody deserves a support system, a neutral party who just shows up as a blank slate to hear your ideas and think help you think outside the box and help you brainstorm and move forward.
00:48:44.440 --> 00:48:49.159
But I think coaching is not for somebody who's stuck in their ways, who doesn't want to grow.
00:48:49.320 --> 00:48:52.920
You really have to have like a growth mindset, you have to be open.
00:48:53.079 --> 00:48:55.800
You don't have to know what you want out of coaching.
00:48:55.960 --> 00:48:56.280
Yeah.
00:48:56.519 --> 00:49:02.519
You just have to know you want someone to hold your hand and support you and ask questions.
00:49:02.679 --> 00:49:15.720
And maybe you're feeling kind of uneasy in your career and something's not working for you, or uneasy in your personal life, and you don't really know what it looks like next, but you want to sit and kind of talk to somebody about that.
00:49:15.880 --> 00:49:17.480
That's who coaching is for.
00:49:17.720 --> 00:49:32.119
If you know you have a plan in place, you want to move on, you want to start travel nursing, or you want to move to a different state, or you want to do something that feels really big, which is really big, but you don't quite know how to get there.
00:49:32.440 --> 00:49:34.039
That's what a coach can help you with.
00:49:34.119 --> 00:49:46.599
A coach is not someone who's gonna tell you what to do or tell you how to fix yourself, or you know, it's it's more just to help guide you forward in a really beautiful way, hold you accountable, help you make a plan.
00:49:47.000 --> 00:49:57.400
There's power in accountability and someone holding a mirror up to you, and someone just being able to literally shine a light in the blind spot that you don't realize is there.
00:49:57.559 --> 00:50:10.679
I mean, you've done it for me multiple times where I'm like, oh, I didn't think of it that way, or oh, you know, just you giving your point of view, third party or outside party giving a point of view, and you're like, wow, that like changes things for me completely.
00:50:11.000 --> 00:50:17.960
But I know you have helped people through certain transitions, like you know, and like navigating that.
00:50:18.039 --> 00:50:20.199
Can you share a few of those like examples?
00:50:20.519 --> 00:50:29.000
Yeah, so that kind of ended up being my niche is that helping helping people navigate transitions in their life, whether whether it be personal or professional.
00:50:29.240 --> 00:50:36.280
Um, so I had a non-healthcare client who was planning to move from the West Coast to the East Coast.
00:50:36.440 --> 00:50:36.679
Okay.
00:50:36.840 --> 00:50:40.440
And she has a family, they were relocating by choice.
00:50:40.679 --> 00:50:43.400
Um, her husband had to find a new job.
00:50:43.559 --> 00:50:48.760
Her kid had they had to do it in a time frame in which it made sense for the kid to go into school in the fall.
00:50:48.920 --> 00:50:59.240
So she had a very set time frame and through a six-week or a six-session coaching container, I helped her navigate that move.
00:50:59.400 --> 00:51:04.199
And I'm no moving, I mean, I have moved before, I've moved states, but I'm no moving expert.
00:51:04.280 --> 00:51:05.800
It's not like that's my expertise.
00:51:05.960 --> 00:51:06.360
Yeah.
00:51:06.599 --> 00:51:11.720
I just know how to come up with a plan and how to ask her questions.
00:51:11.880 --> 00:51:16.119
You know, what feels like a direct threat to your stability right now?
00:51:16.280 --> 00:51:17.639
What are your priorities?
00:51:17.800 --> 00:51:19.720
What is weighing really heavily on you?
00:51:19.880 --> 00:51:21.559
How can I help you feel more organized?
00:51:21.639 --> 00:51:24.039
What do you want to get done before next week?
00:51:24.360 --> 00:51:39.159
And so just by having a really focused 60-minute session with somebody where there's no interruptions, you know, maybe the kid was at school, husband's at work, she could just really zone in and get a lot done and come up with a plan.
00:51:39.240 --> 00:51:41.480
And then I always send a recap email.
00:51:41.639 --> 00:51:47.159
So after every session, it's like, hey, these are the notes from what we talked about, these are your next steps.
00:51:47.240 --> 00:51:51.079
And like whether or not somebody actually takes them for the next week, that's up to them.
00:51:51.159 --> 00:51:52.199
I'm I don't care.
00:51:52.360 --> 00:51:55.720
It's just, I'm just trying to help you stay organized.
00:51:55.960 --> 00:51:57.240
And that really helped her.
00:51:57.400 --> 00:52:08.199
And she went from being kind of frazzled and unorganized and just really anxious about the move, but it was she was having anxiety because she didn't have a plan.
00:52:08.519 --> 00:52:09.159
Yeah.
00:52:09.480 --> 00:52:15.720
And so, I mean, that's just an example of a big personal transition.
00:52:16.840 --> 00:52:19.320
And they moved and it ended up really being great.
00:52:19.400 --> 00:52:22.039
And she was so grateful for the time that we spent together.
00:52:22.360 --> 00:52:25.159
Other examples would be transitioning jobs.
00:52:25.320 --> 00:52:29.079
I I work with a lot of nurses who are then they're not happy in their job.
00:52:29.240 --> 00:52:37.079
A lot of it is just because the healthcare system is not letting them be who they want to be and give care to patients in the way that they want to.
00:52:37.159 --> 00:52:43.639
So it's like, let's let's evaluate where your strengths are and let's come up with a better job opportunity for you.
00:52:43.800 --> 00:52:46.920
Let's talk about different environments that might work well for you.
00:52:47.079 --> 00:52:47.320
Yeah.
00:52:47.559 --> 00:52:54.920
Do you do you feel like there's common themes or like mindset struggles that you see when you're coaching?
00:52:55.159 --> 00:53:03.240
Everyone is unique, but I think a common theme is that people want something different and they just don't know how to get there.
00:53:03.960 --> 00:53:07.880
And that's why I was asking you with your experience, did you need permission from someone?
00:53:08.039 --> 00:53:10.920
Because it's also hard to give ourselves permission.
00:53:11.159 --> 00:53:12.360
Oh, so hard.
00:53:12.519 --> 00:53:18.360
Like if my husband said no, or my my mom said, you know, that's a bad idea, that would have been hard for me.
00:53:18.440 --> 00:53:21.320
That would have definitely delayed the transition a long time.
00:53:21.559 --> 00:53:25.880
I mean, I do think ultimately I probably would have still like left that job.
00:53:26.039 --> 00:53:27.639
I don't know for what exactly.
00:53:27.720 --> 00:53:29.240
Um, but yeah, I agree with you.
00:53:29.320 --> 00:53:30.920
It's hard to give yourself permission.
00:53:31.159 --> 00:53:46.039
And I feel like had we been working together at that point, I would have then said to you, okay, even though they said no, tell me right now what are the reasons why you think it's okay to walk away from this job and you'd be like, and we talk about how highly employable you are.
00:53:46.519 --> 00:53:46.679
Yeah.
00:53:47.079 --> 00:53:49.639
It's not like you're walking away from this job with no other option.
00:53:49.880 --> 00:53:50.519
Right, right.
00:53:50.679 --> 00:53:51.240
It's so true.
00:53:51.320 --> 00:53:53.000
It's like we almost don't have the confidence, too.
00:53:53.079 --> 00:53:56.920
And I think really talking it out probably would help being like, you're right.
00:53:57.079 --> 00:54:00.360
I'm feeling more empowered and confident in making the transition.
00:54:00.519 --> 00:54:02.840
There's a plan, you know, we've thought it out.
00:54:03.400 --> 00:54:05.400
Like, like having a therapist.
00:54:05.480 --> 00:54:05.559
Yeah.
00:54:05.720 --> 00:54:12.039
Because I love having a therapist who knows no one in my life, and she's a safe space that I can talk to.
00:54:12.199 --> 00:54:15.720
A coach is similar because it's confidential, it's a safe space.
00:54:15.880 --> 00:54:17.079
You can open up.
00:54:17.320 --> 00:54:20.679
I don't really know the context of the people in your life.
00:54:20.760 --> 00:54:22.039
Yeah, I'm not judging you.
00:54:22.199 --> 00:54:27.320
I don't have preconceived notions, I don't know, you know, your history except for what you're telling me.
00:54:27.400 --> 00:54:30.280
So I really come at it with a blank slate.
00:54:31.000 --> 00:54:31.480
Yeah.
00:54:31.720 --> 00:54:44.199
And I've had one of my clients tell me, like, she's like, that is why talking to family or talking to friends is not as helpful because they give advice or they have preconceived notions or judgments, or there's they have bias.
00:54:44.440 --> 00:54:48.360
And then working with a coach is just cleaner.
00:54:48.679 --> 00:54:50.039
Yeah, I totally get that.
00:54:50.119 --> 00:54:53.880
And I think that is really helpful for especially new nurses struggling.
00:54:54.039 --> 00:54:57.400
I know we've both coached new nurses that are struggling on the job.
00:54:57.639 --> 00:55:04.039
And I think it's nice because they know that they have a support system that is not, we're not tied to your employer, right?
00:55:04.119 --> 00:55:07.480
And I know every employer usually offers EAP, right?
00:55:07.880 --> 00:55:11.000
Employee assistance program where it is confidential.
00:55:11.320 --> 00:55:16.199
But, you know, there's always that in the back of your mind, like, hmm, but will my coworkers find out?
00:55:16.360 --> 00:55:17.960
Will my will my boss find out?
00:55:18.039 --> 00:55:21.880
Well, yeah, can I really say my honest truth?
00:55:22.199 --> 00:55:27.400
Where when you go and hire a coach like you, Julia, that's obviously not tied to your workplace.
00:55:27.480 --> 00:55:31.480
Like you really can be so brutally honest in what you're going through.
00:55:31.800 --> 00:55:32.039
Yeah.
00:55:32.199 --> 00:55:42.199
Speaking of not being tied to a workplace, I do want to do a little plug here for a free resource that I'm involved in that I helped co-found.
00:55:42.599 --> 00:55:52.119
So um my partner in this project, his name is Victor, and him and I built a free online community for nurses.
00:55:52.280 --> 00:55:54.599
It's a safe space, a confidential space.
00:55:54.679 --> 00:55:57.240
It's a place for people to meet on Zoom calls.
00:55:57.480 --> 00:55:58.519
We have a newsletter.
00:55:58.599 --> 00:56:00.679
It's called the Virtual Nurses Station.
00:56:00.920 --> 00:56:07.240
And we just thought it was really powerful for nurses to be able to connect with other nurses outside of their workplace.
00:56:07.559 --> 00:56:13.159
I think out of the hundred plus people that are in our community, no one works with each other.
00:56:13.480 --> 00:56:14.519
That's so cool.
00:56:14.760 --> 00:56:21.240
I know, and nobody from my past, maybe one person, but very few people.
00:56:21.320 --> 00:56:24.679
It's not like I went to all my old coworkers and said, Hey, I'm building this thing.
00:56:24.840 --> 00:56:25.800
Do you want to be a part of it?
00:56:25.960 --> 00:56:30.280
It's just kind of like whoever was naturally interested in it came.
00:56:30.440 --> 00:56:36.440
And it just gives you an opportunity to connect with other nurses throughout the US who you don't see on a day-to-day basis.
00:56:36.679 --> 00:56:39.880
You can share your honest feelings about your job.
00:56:39.960 --> 00:56:42.199
You can talk about a hard situation that happened.
00:56:42.280 --> 00:56:43.800
We have different topics every month.
00:56:43.960 --> 00:56:50.920
It's a beautiful free resource for nurses to use for a support system in whatever capacity that that works.
00:56:51.880 --> 00:56:52.920
Okay, two things with that.
00:56:53.079 --> 00:56:55.800
One, also like none of your calls are recorded, right?
00:56:55.880 --> 00:57:05.159
So that's nice too, from like confidentiality, and no one's gonna be able to have any evidence against you or whatever if that works because you really want to feel like it's a safe space, right?
00:57:05.240 --> 00:57:06.840
That's still how you proceed.
00:57:06.920 --> 00:57:07.079
Okay.
00:57:07.320 --> 00:57:07.720
Yeah.
00:57:08.039 --> 00:57:10.760
For now, there's the email subscription.
00:57:10.840 --> 00:57:17.880
So you get multiple emails a month, and that helps you really stay connected with us because we do a monthly newsletter, we do recaps of some of our calls.
00:57:18.039 --> 00:57:21.320
We're just kind of recapping the topics we talk about and the main points.
00:57:21.639 --> 00:57:24.199
And then I send out links every single day.
00:57:24.280 --> 00:57:24.840
We have a call.
00:57:24.920 --> 00:57:30.199
There's an email with a link, so you can just do like a quick click and join the Zoom call.
00:57:30.440 --> 00:57:32.440
And then we have a Facebook page.
00:57:32.519 --> 00:57:41.960
If you're on Facebook, we have a group, we kind of duplicate everything I just talked about, but in the group, and then that's kind of a group discussion, and you can post there anonymously as well.
00:57:42.280 --> 00:57:46.199
I'll post a link for that in the show notes, and that's the virtual nurses station.
00:57:46.280 --> 00:57:47.079
Yeah, yeah.
00:57:47.320 --> 00:57:48.920
VNS is what we call it.
00:57:49.400 --> 00:57:53.480
So it's really just kind of a well-rounded resource for people.
00:57:54.119 --> 00:57:56.119
I love that new new nurses can come.
00:57:56.199 --> 00:58:03.000
We've had some brand new nurses in the group, and we have some nurses with 20 plus years of experience or who are even retired.
00:58:03.400 --> 00:58:04.199
I love that.
00:58:04.440 --> 00:58:04.679
Yeah.
00:58:04.920 --> 00:58:09.639
Now, I only have a few questions left for you, but I wanted to ask you this one.
00:58:10.199 --> 00:58:18.360
If someone listening is thinking, I've always wanted a coach, but I don't really know if it's worth investing in myself, what would you say to that?
00:58:18.679 --> 00:58:31.159
I would say I think it's always worth investing in yourself because I guess the worst case scenario is that you get into a coaching relationship and either the coach is not the right, it's not the right fit, or you're just not that into it.
00:58:31.240 --> 00:58:36.199
And in that case, then you put that aside and you say, I tried it, it wasn't for me.
00:58:36.360 --> 00:58:38.039
But I don't really see that happening.
00:58:38.280 --> 00:58:38.440
Yeah.
00:58:38.599 --> 00:58:43.880
Do you have a call where you kind of feel each other out and you're like, okay, let me make sure, yeah, we're a fit.
00:58:44.039 --> 00:58:44.280
Yeah.
00:58:44.440 --> 00:58:49.559
So I do a free coaching consultation, usually about 30 minutes.
00:58:49.720 --> 00:58:51.000
Sometimes it goes over that.
00:58:51.159 --> 00:58:54.039
We just kind of chat about like, why are you interested in coaching?
00:58:54.199 --> 00:58:58.599
What's going on in your life to bring you, you know, what piqued your interest in this?
00:58:58.760 --> 00:58:58.920
Yeah.
00:58:59.400 --> 00:59:01.720
How do you feel I can help you?
00:59:01.880 --> 00:59:03.800
And we just kind of get to know each other.
00:59:04.039 --> 00:59:08.599
And then one of my biggest things is I like meeting people where they're at.
00:59:08.760 --> 00:59:17.800
So where I do propose a package for of coaching sessions based on what the client says that they need at the time.
00:59:18.039 --> 00:59:25.320
I this is a little unusual, and I don't know if anybody else does this, but I offer coaching sessions PRN.
00:59:25.880 --> 00:59:30.519
Oh, so like once they're established with you, you're kind of like, hey, I will meet with you as needed.
00:59:31.159 --> 00:59:31.720
Yes.
00:59:32.039 --> 00:59:42.039
So I would, and I don't have this like written in stone, but I would like to work with someone for at least three to six sessions to establish a relationship.
00:59:42.280 --> 00:59:45.240
And then moving forward, we can book PRN.
00:59:45.320 --> 00:59:52.599
You don't really have to dedicate, say you're like, you know what, I don't really want to pay for six sessions.
00:59:52.760 --> 00:59:55.400
I'd rather just schedule you as needed.
00:59:55.639 --> 00:59:56.599
I'm cool with that.
00:59:56.760 --> 01:00:00.760
And normally what happens is people end up meeting with me once or twice a month anyway.
01:00:01.079 --> 01:00:01.320
Yeah.
01:00:01.480 --> 01:00:08.599
So, like, say the girl who used you to help her move during the move, something happened and she felt anxious and overwhelmed again.
01:00:08.679 --> 01:00:13.400
And she could reach back out to you and say, Hey, Julia, I think I need one more session with you because I'm stressed about XYZ.
01:00:13.559 --> 01:00:16.039
And you're like, hey, go because I know you.
01:00:16.599 --> 01:00:18.519
We have a relationship established.
01:00:18.679 --> 01:00:19.559
I know the context.
01:00:19.720 --> 01:00:25.079
We're not going to spend that whole hour, you know, talking about the buildup to what got her here.
01:00:25.240 --> 01:00:29.240
It's really could be a good working session and she can get value out of it.
01:00:29.480 --> 01:00:32.840
So that is something that I offer that I'm not sure other coaches offer.
01:00:33.079 --> 01:00:33.639
I love that.
01:00:33.880 --> 01:00:39.960
I think a lot of other nurse coaches or coaches in general provide these like preset packages.
01:00:40.039 --> 01:00:52.920
And I do think there's value in that because then it shows that the person who wants coaching is dedicated, they're willing to invest in themselves and then commit to three, six, nine sessions, whatever they choose.
01:00:53.000 --> 01:00:53.159
Yeah.
01:00:53.320 --> 01:00:54.920
But that's something that we can work out together.
01:00:55.000 --> 01:00:59.000
I'm very all about I'm all about customization, meeting people where they're at.
01:00:59.159 --> 01:01:09.880
But one of the things I'd like to on the whole PRN thing, yeah, is I had a nurse that I know experience a very traumatic code blue.
01:01:11.320 --> 01:01:30.920
And one of the things I had been envisioning for my practice is having this like offering called code blue, where it's kind of more of like a crisis session, where it's like something at work happened or something in life happened, and you need some kind of immediate venting and feedback and support.
01:01:31.960 --> 01:01:43.240
It's just the same as what you would do going to like talk to your charge nurse or your preceptor or a work friend or your unit educator or your manager.
01:01:43.559 --> 01:01:49.400
But I'm a separate entity, I don't know all the dynamics of your job, so I'm a safe space.
01:01:49.480 --> 01:01:50.599
You can talk me through it.
01:01:50.760 --> 01:01:54.440
And what I found doing this is it was so helpful.
01:01:54.679 --> 01:01:58.119
The nurse was carrying a lot of personal blame.
01:01:59.079 --> 01:02:04.280
And so the biggest takeaway from our session was I heard everything that happened.
01:02:04.599 --> 01:02:06.119
She was able to process it.
01:02:06.199 --> 01:02:07.400
We were able to talk through it.
01:02:07.559 --> 01:02:09.240
I was able to ask a lot of questions.
01:02:09.400 --> 01:02:17.320
And the the conclusion that we came to together, but I think I opened her eyes to, is that this code blue was not her fault.
01:02:17.480 --> 01:02:20.519
It was a failure of some of the systems in place.
01:02:20.599 --> 01:02:23.559
And there was multiple people that failed this patient.
01:02:23.720 --> 01:02:27.639
And she had been carrying this personal responsibility since the event.
01:02:27.880 --> 01:02:30.360
And I just felt like she was able to finally breathe.
01:02:30.599 --> 01:02:35.000
It feels like it comes back to almost giving yourself permission to be at peace and to move on.
01:02:35.240 --> 01:02:49.720
But also, you know, not having such tunnel vision and just kind of understanding like she had to tell me the story for me to hear the full story and then be able to pick it apart and say, Hey, did you realize that X, Y, and Z also happened?
01:02:50.039 --> 01:02:50.440
Yes.
01:02:50.599 --> 01:02:52.199
And that is not your fault.
01:02:52.519 --> 01:03:02.599
Yeah, and I think that really helps that you have that ICU background to be like, I can literally pick this apart clinically with you, work through it to learn maybe from a clinical standpoint.
01:03:03.000 --> 01:03:07.960
But then I can also understand the emotional turmoil or whatever it is that we're going through.
01:03:08.280 --> 01:03:13.480
So I would say I would love to offer these like code blue sessions.
01:03:13.639 --> 01:03:26.199
And I would say that I probably don't need prior context to a person if it's more like clinical and we can just like spend 90 minutes or two hours picking this apart and kind of working through something.
01:03:26.440 --> 01:03:33.159
And I feel like that is kind of unusual, but my skill set as an ICU nurse, I can think on my toes.
01:03:33.320 --> 01:03:36.119
I get handed these situations with no context.
01:03:36.280 --> 01:03:39.800
At this point in my career, you don't even have to give me a report on the patient.
01:03:40.440 --> 01:03:41.240
Like, I'm good.
01:03:41.400 --> 01:03:42.280
Don't even bother.
01:03:42.440 --> 01:03:48.360
I mean, honestly, I can read a chart, I can look at a person, how they're presenting, their airway, their vitals.
01:03:48.519 --> 01:03:50.760
I mean, so I can do that in a coaching session.
01:03:50.920 --> 01:03:54.840
I can hear and assess the situation and help you move forward.
01:03:55.159 --> 01:03:56.760
I think that's an incredible resource.
01:03:56.840 --> 01:03:59.720
You need to list that on your website, ASAP.
01:03:59.960 --> 01:04:04.920
I'm so my website is very remedial, you guys.
01:04:05.159 --> 01:04:06.920
I don't have it dialed.
01:04:07.079 --> 01:04:10.039
I don't even have like all my offerings listed.
01:04:10.199 --> 01:04:14.039
I like to meet with people in a session so that we can figure out are we a good fit?
01:04:14.119 --> 01:04:16.280
And then how can I build sessions for you?
01:04:16.440 --> 01:04:18.119
And what resources do you need?
01:04:18.280 --> 01:04:25.480
So my website will be in the works and I will be improving it and making it more of something you want to look at.
01:04:25.800 --> 01:04:26.440
Oh, sure.
01:04:26.679 --> 01:04:28.679
And I will list your your website.
01:04:29.000 --> 01:04:29.400
That's fine.
01:04:29.559 --> 01:04:32.519
Obviously, people can reach right out to you if they're struggling to figure out.
01:04:32.840 --> 01:04:34.039
Email, social media.
01:04:34.199 --> 01:04:37.639
So my email is julia at coaching with Julia.com.
01:04:37.800 --> 01:04:38.039
Great.
01:04:38.199 --> 01:04:42.760
I'm also offering for anybody that wants to sign up for coaching.
01:04:42.840 --> 01:04:44.599
We can definitely do a consultation.
01:04:44.760 --> 01:04:46.840
I will offer three sessions.
01:04:46.920 --> 01:04:53.079
If you do a three session or six session package, I will give you one free session after that.
01:04:53.159 --> 01:04:55.559
So kind of a built-in bonus session.
01:04:55.800 --> 01:04:57.880
But just mentioned you heard me on the podcast.
01:04:58.039 --> 01:05:01.159
And then social media, I'm not huge on social media.
01:05:01.720 --> 01:05:02.360
Are you kidding?
01:05:02.440 --> 01:05:03.800
Your social media is incredible.
01:05:03.960 --> 01:05:05.639
Like you should be a photographer.
01:05:05.800 --> 01:05:12.519
If coaching, like another side passion, like what I mean is I don't have a ton of like different outlets of social media.
01:05:12.599 --> 01:05:15.240
I have Instagram, I love Instagram, I love photography.
01:05:15.320 --> 01:05:24.039
So what Caroline's saying is that she likes the pictures of my life, which I I tend to use social media to just kind of like show my travels and my adventures and my life.
01:05:24.199 --> 01:05:26.920
Not so much, it's not so business heavy.
01:05:27.159 --> 01:05:30.199
If you follow Julia, you're going to see Julia Delay.
01:05:30.440 --> 01:05:32.119
So at Julia Delay.
01:05:32.199 --> 01:05:35.800
So that's J-U-L-I-A-D-E-L-E-A.
01:05:36.440 --> 01:05:37.880
I'll put it in the show notes too.
01:05:37.960 --> 01:05:38.119
Yeah.
01:05:38.280 --> 01:05:48.199
But if you follow her, you guys are going to see mountains, you're going to see adventure, you're going to see margaritas, you're going to see good food, you're going to see ketones, you're going to see her dog.
01:05:48.360 --> 01:05:53.480
But like every picture, I'm just like, geez, she is just, you're just so good at capturing pictures.
01:05:53.800 --> 01:05:54.440
The rodeo.
01:05:54.519 --> 01:05:55.240
You'll see the rodeo.
01:05:55.559 --> 01:05:56.119
The rodeo.
01:05:56.280 --> 01:05:58.599
I am going to fly out to you one day and you're going to take me to the rodeo.
01:05:58.679 --> 01:06:00.760
That's like so much fun.
01:06:01.000 --> 01:06:01.800
So much fun.
01:06:02.039 --> 01:06:07.240
And I guess so uh two more quick little things I want to say.
01:06:08.199 --> 01:06:13.400
Is I created merch for bedside nurses called Bedside Baddie.
01:06:13.639 --> 01:06:14.760
Wait, I think I have my hat.
01:06:14.840 --> 01:06:15.320
Hold on.
01:06:15.559 --> 01:06:16.440
Oh, do you really?
01:06:16.599 --> 01:06:17.400
That's so great.
01:06:17.960 --> 01:06:21.079
But we all know that I look like Kid Rock in a hat.
01:06:21.159 --> 01:06:22.440
So please don't judge.
01:06:22.760 --> 01:06:25.320
When I saw you wearing a Nike hat the other day, I was like, she's doing it.
01:06:25.400 --> 01:06:28.920
And you're like, no, it's just trucker hats that make me look like I love it.
01:06:29.079 --> 01:06:30.519
So Bedside Baddie.
01:06:30.840 --> 01:06:31.240
Yep.
01:06:31.480 --> 01:06:33.880
It's kids like isn't it cute?
01:06:34.199 --> 01:06:38.840
Um this, you know, honestly, non-bedside nurses can wear it too.
01:06:39.000 --> 01:06:40.360
It's just a fun little thing.
01:06:40.519 --> 01:06:45.880
So my friend Alicia makes custom uh merch and she made the bedside baddie line.
01:06:45.960 --> 01:06:46.760
So that's super fun.
01:06:46.840 --> 01:06:48.760
So if you want something, just hit me up.
01:06:49.400 --> 01:06:54.280
And then I'm a trip, I'm doing something new with another nurse.
01:06:54.440 --> 01:06:58.199
I am co hosting a women's trip to Croatia.
01:06:58.679 --> 01:06:59.159
Awesome.
01:06:59.320 --> 01:07:01.960
I'm Leaving in like 37 days.
01:07:02.199 --> 01:07:03.000
I'm so jealous.
01:07:03.079 --> 01:07:08.599
I'm gonna have to block you too when you're gone because I feel like you and Josie are gonna have so much FOMO and Lindsay.
01:07:09.079 --> 01:07:09.880
Lindsay's coming.
01:07:09.960 --> 01:07:10.199
I know.
01:07:10.280 --> 01:07:10.840
I'm so excited.
01:07:11.400 --> 01:07:11.800
Jealous.
01:07:11.960 --> 01:07:12.119
Okay.
01:07:12.440 --> 01:07:13.159
So jealous.
01:07:13.400 --> 01:07:16.440
So Live Travel Vibe is our girlfriend Josie.
01:07:16.519 --> 01:07:17.720
She owns this company.
01:07:17.800 --> 01:07:23.000
I had to give her a little plug because I'm as a nurse going and I'm gonna be a co-host on this trip.
01:07:23.240 --> 01:07:25.079
Super fun experience for me.
01:07:25.400 --> 01:07:33.639
But I also wanted to talk about the power of social media for two quick seconds because I posted a reel, a trial reel.
01:07:34.039 --> 01:07:34.519
Yes.
01:07:34.840 --> 01:07:36.280
And it went viral.
01:07:37.559 --> 01:07:40.280
It has over 260,000 views.
01:07:40.599 --> 01:07:41.480
Look at you, girl.
01:07:41.559 --> 01:07:43.720
I'm not a I don't really use social media.
01:07:44.039 --> 01:07:44.360
I know.
01:07:44.440 --> 01:07:48.280
This is why it's really funny, is because the power of the internet is insane.
01:07:48.760 --> 01:07:52.119
And we sold out our Croatia trip.
01:07:52.599 --> 01:07:53.240
Oh my god.
01:07:53.639 --> 01:07:55.480
From my trial reel.
01:07:55.880 --> 01:08:03.880
We had three girls from social media sign up and pay in full for their trip just from that reel.
01:08:04.360 --> 01:08:05.960
Are they do they know each other?
01:08:06.280 --> 01:08:06.599
No.
01:08:06.920 --> 01:08:07.240
Wow.
01:08:07.480 --> 01:08:07.800
I know.
01:08:08.840 --> 01:08:09.320
I know.
01:08:09.480 --> 01:08:10.199
Isn't that crazy?
01:08:10.679 --> 01:08:11.320
You girl?
01:08:11.559 --> 01:08:14.440
No, it's a fluke, but we'll take it.
01:08:14.760 --> 01:08:18.039
But you will see a lot of travel content this summer.
01:08:18.199 --> 01:08:21.000
I'm going, not it's not a trip with all nurses.
01:08:21.159 --> 01:08:25.399
About half of our group is healthcare and nurses, but it'll be super fun.
01:08:25.479 --> 01:08:26.679
So you can follow along.
01:08:26.920 --> 01:08:27.239
All right.
01:08:27.319 --> 01:08:29.159
I'm gonna ask you the final question before.
01:08:29.800 --> 01:08:29.960
Okay.
01:08:30.039 --> 01:08:38.920
What I'd love to ask my guests at the end of the episode is if you could go back in time to new grad nurse Julia, what would you tell her and why?
01:08:39.960 --> 01:08:42.279
I would tell her, good job.
01:08:42.599 --> 01:08:53.159
You did so many things right, and maybe it took you a while to get there, but I really truly feel like I've always trusted my own gut and my instincts.
01:08:53.639 --> 01:08:56.599
And I made a lot of the right moves.
01:08:57.319 --> 01:09:01.159
I res I respected my work education.
01:09:01.479 --> 01:09:08.840
I found mentors, I learned from nurses that had been working there a long time.
01:09:09.479 --> 01:09:16.760
I continued to build my skill set as I felt like, you know, kind of the itch to do that.
01:09:17.000 --> 01:09:26.279
I taught other people, I had a good support system, and then I really dug into investing in myself and also my hobbies.
01:09:26.439 --> 01:09:31.560
You know, when I became, yeah, when I became a nurse, I really leaned into learning the practice of yoga.
01:09:31.800 --> 01:09:38.359
I, for a full year after I became a nurse and I had big girl money, I was riding horses.
01:09:38.600 --> 01:09:39.560
I rode horses.
01:09:39.640 --> 01:09:42.199
I'm a wannabe equestrian, as my sister said.
01:09:42.600 --> 01:09:45.239
Um I rode horses as a as a child.
01:09:45.319 --> 01:09:51.319
And then again, as an adult, when I first became a nurse, that was like my gift to myself, um, horseback riding lessons.
01:09:51.399 --> 01:09:54.119
So just doing things to really honor yourself.
01:09:54.279 --> 01:09:59.159
And that's my whole platform, my whole message to nurses in general.
01:09:59.399 --> 01:10:09.079
But I would just say good job to myself because I I really think that even though I went through some like really hard stuff, I always chose myself first.
01:10:09.319 --> 01:10:10.119
I love that.
01:10:10.279 --> 01:10:14.279
I think you're the first guest that I've ever had that's literally just been like, I would tell myself, good job.
01:10:14.439 --> 01:10:17.000
Like everyone's like, keep going, you got that.
01:10:17.079 --> 01:10:19.560
You know, you're just like, I'm just gonna say, good job.
01:10:19.800 --> 01:10:21.079
Like you did it, girl.
01:10:21.239 --> 01:10:22.199
Yeah, Julia.
01:10:22.359 --> 01:10:23.399
I absolutely love that.
01:10:23.560 --> 01:10:25.159
I love our entire conversation today.
01:10:25.319 --> 01:10:28.279
You're one of my favorite people, and I can't believe we've never even met in real life.
01:10:28.520 --> 01:10:29.399
I know that's great.
01:10:29.720 --> 01:10:30.920
But we have, I feel like we have.
01:10:31.159 --> 01:10:31.480
We will.
01:10:31.560 --> 01:10:36.680
And we have, we will, but I just want to thank you so much for being a guest on my show.
01:10:36.760 --> 01:10:44.600
And I just feel like you bring so much light to our profession, and I love how you nurture the nursing community, especially the new nurses.
01:10:44.840 --> 01:10:51.079
You know, I have a special place in my heart for them, and I feel like we're gonna do a lot of good for that little portion of our profession.
01:10:51.239 --> 01:10:52.199
So thank you so much.
01:10:52.840 --> 01:10:53.239
I appreciate it.
01:10:53.399 --> 01:10:54.279
That's really nice of you.
01:10:54.439 --> 01:11:02.359
Thanks for having me on, and also thank you for nurturing new nurses because I remember what it how uncomfortable it was to be a new nurse.
01:11:02.439 --> 01:11:04.439
Yeah, and I think a lot of people forget.
01:11:04.680 --> 01:11:05.159
Absolutely.
01:11:05.640 --> 01:11:13.000
It's so important to be patient and kind and a good teacher, and you know, this is the future of our profession.
01:11:13.079 --> 01:11:14.439
So let's just do better.
01:11:14.680 --> 01:11:16.520
We're doing the Lord's work, manual.
01:11:21.319 --> 01:11:24.920
Well, that's it for today's episode of Life After Nursing School.
01:11:25.079 --> 01:11:30.359
I hope you feel more confident and ready to tackle the challenges that come with starting your nursing career.
01:11:30.600 --> 01:11:37.399
Remember, the first year or two might not be easy, but with the right mindset, you can overcome anything.
01:11:37.560 --> 01:11:44.279
If you found value in today's episode, I'd love for you to hit that subscribe button so you never miss a future episode.
01:11:44.520 --> 01:11:48.439
Also, please consider leaving a review on your favorite podcast platform.
01:11:48.600 --> 01:11:51.560
It helps so much in reaching other new nurses like you.
01:11:51.800 --> 01:11:55.079
Thanks for listening, and remember, you've got this.
01:11:55.319 --> 01:11:57.000
Take care and see you next time.
