ÜBER DIESE EPISODE
One phone call can drop you into a moment you never trained for and that’s exactly why training matters. I’m John Thurman, a therapist and crisis responder, and I’m unpacking a lesson I learned the hard way: the middle of pressure is a terrible time to decide what you believe, what matters, and how you’ll respond.
We take that big idea and bring it down to everyday life, where most of us actually fight our toughest battles. Picture a normal Tuesday afternoon, then a message lands that pushes the exact right button. Your body reacts, your mind fills in the blanks, and you can feel yourself sliding into an old pattern. We talk about how resilient faith shows up right there, in the small space between the trigger and what you do next. Proverbs 16:32 gives a surprising definition of strength, and the fruit of the Spirit reminds us that self-control isn’t instant; it’s grown.
Along the way, I connect spiritual formation with how the brain builds familiar pathways, why repeated practice matters, and how a simple prayer like “Lord help me” can create real breathing room. You’ll leave with practical questions to slow assumptions, choose a response you’ll respect later, and keep growing even when progress looks quiet and ordinary. If this helped, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs a calmer Tuesday, and leave a review so more people can find the podcast.

00:00:01.600 --> 00:00:07.599
Resilient Solutions Shortcast, Episode 96, Guarding the Gate, Part 3.
00:00:07.839 --> 00:00:10.000
Train Before the Moment Comes.
00:00:15.199 --> 00:00:19.440
One morning years ago, I was working at home and received a phone call.
00:00:19.839 --> 00:00:23.679
That phone call changed my day and changed my life.
00:00:23.920 --> 00:00:35.039
That morning I was home writing an article for a magazine, and I got a call from a company I work for that said, can you respond to a mass shooting in Albuquerque, New Mexico?
00:00:36.320 --> 00:00:38.880
By the way, you'll be the lead.
00:00:39.200 --> 00:00:41.280
I'm like, oh my gosh, what's going on?
00:00:41.520 --> 00:00:44.399
Sure enough, I checked the news and it had been a shooting at MCOR.
00:00:44.560 --> 00:00:45.600
Some of you may remember that.
00:00:45.679 --> 00:00:47.520
It's been over 20 years ago now.
00:00:47.840 --> 00:00:51.200
But as I drove, I had two or three things I was dealing with.
00:00:51.280 --> 00:00:54.079
Number one, I'd never done a mass shooting before.
00:00:54.399 --> 00:01:00.719
Number two, the company I was working for was in the active process of purchasing the company that was responding.
00:01:00.880 --> 00:01:09.920
So I was in the middle of forming a plan while consulting with two different entities that were going to be controlling the event and paying me later.
00:01:10.159 --> 00:01:21.599
At first I was a little bit overwhelmed, but I realized I have trained my whole life for this with the army, with the crisis response work I've had, with the reading, listening, and training I've done.
00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:25.760
And I even remembered as a young boy scout the motto, be prepared.
00:01:25.920 --> 00:01:28.719
So while it was a bit daunting, I knew I was prepared.
00:01:28.799 --> 00:01:32.719
I prayed, I trusted the Lord, but I had trained for that moment.
00:01:32.879 --> 00:01:41.200
And I'd like to tell you, as crazy as it was, we had as many great outcomes as it could be, the team I worked with, and I'm grateful for that.
00:01:41.439 --> 00:01:46.480
But that was the moment that if I had not been ready for it, I would have failed.
00:01:46.879 --> 00:01:48.319
I am John Thurman.
00:01:48.560 --> 00:02:03.760
I'm an author and a therapist, and I'd like to thank you and welcome you to my shortcast, John Thurman's Resilient Faith Shortcast, where I look at practical biblical ways to help you develop a more resilient faith so you can stand strong in the storms of life.
00:02:03.840 --> 00:02:05.120
I'm so glad you joined me.
00:02:05.280 --> 00:02:06.879
Let's jump right in today.
00:02:14.080 --> 00:02:15.759
Hey, this is John Thurman.
00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:18.240
Thank you for taking a few minutes to join me today.
00:02:18.400 --> 00:02:25.919
In the next 10 or 12 minutes, I hope to give you some encouragement and some tools that you can use to build a more resilient and strong faith.
00:02:26.080 --> 00:02:27.520
I'm not here to preach at you.
00:02:27.599 --> 00:02:29.039
I'm not here to do a teaching.
00:02:29.199 --> 00:02:32.719
I'm not here to kind of harass you, harangue you, or manipulate you.
00:02:32.879 --> 00:02:37.360
I'm here just to share some information because I want you to win the race.
00:02:37.680 --> 00:02:42.639
For any of you guys listening, Boy Scouts, do you remember the Boy Scout motto?
00:02:43.280 --> 00:02:44.400
Be prepared.
00:02:44.560 --> 00:02:45.280
That's right.
00:02:45.439 --> 00:02:47.360
The key is really being prepared.
00:02:47.520 --> 00:03:02.080
And one of the things I've learned in all my years of crisis response is therapy and being the military is that the middle of an emergency or crisis is an absolute terrible time to start deciding what you believe, what matters, and what you're going to do.
00:03:02.400 --> 00:03:06.000
That's why in the military we would train, train, train, train, train.
00:03:06.159 --> 00:03:09.680
That's why when I played football in high school, I wasn't a great football player.
00:03:09.840 --> 00:03:11.840
But we trained, trained, trained, trained, trained.
00:03:11.919 --> 00:03:12.800
We did basics.
00:03:12.960 --> 00:03:16.400
That's why when I was a cadet, we trained, trained, trained, trained, trained.
00:03:16.560 --> 00:03:22.080
That's why when I take first aid classes, even though it's a review, I train and train and train and train.
00:03:22.479 --> 00:03:26.240
For those of you that are shooters, how do you get proficient with a firearm?
00:03:26.400 --> 00:03:28.639
You train, train, train, train, train.
00:03:28.800 --> 00:03:32.080
No matter what you do, it all gets back to training.
00:03:32.800 --> 00:03:34.719
That's why people train.
00:03:35.039 --> 00:03:42.479
You practice when things are quiet, so that when things aren't quiet, you have something to fall back on.
00:03:42.960 --> 00:03:50.639
Over the years, I've seen that principle work in crisis situations, in the counseling room, and more times than I care to admit my own life.
00:03:50.800 --> 00:03:53.280
Good Lord, I could write a book just on that.
00:03:53.520 --> 00:03:57.439
And I've come to believe that it's just as true spiritually.
00:03:57.759 --> 00:04:00.960
You don't build self-control in the moment you need it.
00:04:01.280 --> 00:04:03.439
You bring it into that moment with you.
00:04:03.680 --> 00:04:05.039
Let me show you what I mean.
00:04:05.280 --> 00:04:10.000
It's Tuesday afternoon, and coincidentally it's Tuesday afternoon as I'm recording this.
00:04:10.240 --> 00:04:12.319
Nothing catastrophic has happened.
00:04:12.479 --> 00:04:18.959
It's just been one of those days where nothing has gone terribly wrong, but nothing's gone terribly right either.
00:04:19.279 --> 00:04:21.199
And then your phone buzzes.
00:04:21.759 --> 00:04:33.439
You look down, you read the message, and while it's only a sense or two, somehow the person on the other end has managed to push exactly the right button.
00:04:33.680 --> 00:04:34.800
You read it again.
00:04:35.040 --> 00:04:45.600
Your shoulders tighten, your breathing changes just a little, and almost immediately your mind starts filling with all the things that message didn't actually say.
00:04:45.839 --> 00:04:47.199
I know what they meant by that.
00:04:47.360 --> 00:04:49.600
And now you're composing a response.
00:04:49.920 --> 00:04:53.279
Not typing it yet, but in your head you're writing it.
00:04:53.600 --> 00:04:59.839
And sometimes the distance between thinking something and saying it is remarkably short, isn't it?
00:05:00.319 --> 00:05:05.519
That's when the faith we talk about on Sunday morning has to work on Tuesday afternoon.
00:05:05.759 --> 00:05:08.319
And that's where resilient faith gets real.
00:05:08.639 --> 00:05:12.639
Because under pressure, we tend to travel familiar roads, don't we?
00:05:12.959 --> 00:05:17.360
The message may be new, but the road in your mind starts traveling.
00:05:17.600 --> 00:05:23.040
Those neuropathways that you've etched over the years move really fast.
00:05:23.199 --> 00:05:25.519
You've probably been down that road before, haven't you?
00:05:25.759 --> 00:05:28.000
You know how it turns, you know where it ends.
00:05:28.079 --> 00:05:37.920
And if you've traveled that road enough times, you can get there remarkably fast, even without passing go, or even without collecting two hundred dollars.
00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:43.439
That's one reason Proverbs 1632 has become such an interesting verse to me.
00:05:43.680 --> 00:05:45.839
Better to be patient than powerful.
00:05:46.079 --> 00:05:49.279
Better to have self-control than to conquer a city.
00:05:49.519 --> 00:05:52.639
There's something almost countercultural about that, isn't it?
00:05:53.040 --> 00:06:02.480
We usually picture strength as doing something, taking charge, answering back, setting that person straight, and yet the scripture gives us another picture.
00:06:03.439 --> 00:06:10.800
Sometimes strength looks like a person sitting at the kitchen table with phone in hand and not hitting sin.
00:06:11.680 --> 00:06:17.040
Nobody sees it, nobody applauds, but something important just happened.
00:06:18.079 --> 00:06:22.800
There was a little space between what happened to you and what you did next.
00:06:23.360 --> 00:06:28.959
We've talked about that space in the last couple of shortcasts, but here's what I want you to notice today.
00:06:29.279 --> 00:06:31.439
Fruit does not grow in an instant.
00:06:31.920 --> 00:06:36.079
Paul gives a wonderful example of this when he talks about the fruit of the Spirit.
00:06:36.319 --> 00:06:39.040
And one of those fruits he calls self-control.
00:06:39.519 --> 00:06:46.079
Fruit grows, but it grows slowly, quietly, and long before anybody sees it.
00:06:46.240 --> 00:06:50.639
Sometimes in our Christian life, I think we can we think we just command this stuff to happen.
00:06:50.800 --> 00:06:52.000
Well it doesn't.
00:06:52.480 --> 00:06:55.839
Fruit grows slowly and quietly long before anybody sees it.
00:06:56.000 --> 00:07:00.240
We have an apple tree in our backyard, and I can't command it to do anything.
00:07:00.560 --> 00:07:05.920
To get apples in the fall, it takes a whole nine months for that process to occur.
00:07:06.240 --> 00:07:11.680
So just realize the fruit is growing in you if you're cooperating with the Holy Spirit and in the Word.
00:07:11.920 --> 00:07:14.079
Now I want you to stay with me for a moment.
00:07:14.560 --> 00:07:18.319
Because something's been happening inside that tree for a long time.
00:07:18.560 --> 00:07:23.680
I think that's a beautiful picture of what the Lord does in our lives over time.
00:07:24.079 --> 00:07:39.680
When we spend time with Him, when we go to church, when we worship, we're in the Word, His Word begins working its way into how you and I think, how you and I pray, what to do when we stumble, how we apologize, when we try again.
00:07:39.759 --> 00:07:40.879
Have you ever noticed that?
00:07:41.120 --> 00:07:48.720
You learn some stuff, you practice some stuff, you mess up, you do a face plant, you confess, you forsake, and you get on down the road.
00:07:49.040 --> 00:07:55.120
And somewhere along the way, many times without even noticing it, we're changing.
00:07:55.360 --> 00:07:57.199
That's the work of the Holy Spirit.
00:07:57.360 --> 00:08:01.040
The Holy Spirit doesn't do a bam, one and done.
00:08:01.199 --> 00:08:03.279
It's a lifelong process.
00:08:03.519 --> 00:08:05.839
And there's something else happening as well.
00:08:06.319 --> 00:08:16.959
As we worship, as we expose ourselves to the word, as we sit quietly before the throne, as we wait on Jesus and we learn, our brains are learning.
00:08:17.279 --> 00:08:20.800
The things we repeatedly do become easier to do.
00:08:21.199 --> 00:08:25.199
That's one reason some of our old reactions can feel so automatic.
00:08:25.439 --> 00:08:33.360
We've practiced them for so long, maybe without meaning to, maybe for years, but this is what gives me hope.
00:08:33.679 --> 00:08:39.039
We do not have to repeat the same old negative thinking patterns.
00:08:39.200 --> 00:08:56.000
We don't have to stay in the trap of thinking thinking because of the A, the finished work of Jesus, the fact that His death, burial, and resurrection gave us power over sin, death, and hell, and the fact that His Holy Spirit lives in us to give us what we need to live a life that honors him.
00:08:56.320 --> 00:08:58.480
Which brings me back to Tuesday afternoon.
00:08:59.360 --> 00:09:01.039
The phone is still sitting there.
00:09:01.840 --> 00:09:04.399
The message has not disappeared.
00:09:05.279 --> 00:09:10.399
Maybe six months ago, you would have already fired off our response, but today you're still sitting there.
00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:19.039
And somewhere in that little bit of space, you manage a very deep, profound, and sophisticated prayer.
00:09:19.200 --> 00:09:21.600
Something like this Lord help me.
00:09:22.159 --> 00:09:26.559
I know, I know I've prayed that a a few times, sometimes a few times a day.
00:09:26.960 --> 00:09:34.000
Maybe you have too, and strangely enough, that teeny weeny tiny pause changes something.
00:09:34.559 --> 00:09:36.159
The message hadn't changed.
00:09:36.399 --> 00:09:39.120
The person who sent it hasn't changed.
00:09:39.519 --> 00:09:43.440
But now you're beginning to notice what's happening inside of you.
00:09:43.600 --> 00:09:51.360
Some of what you're reacting to is what was actually said, and some of it may be the story you're telling yourself about what was said.
00:09:51.759 --> 00:09:54.320
So you ask yourself a simple question.
00:09:54.639 --> 00:09:56.720
What do I actually know here?
00:09:57.039 --> 00:09:57.840
That's different.
00:09:58.000 --> 00:09:59.600
Maybe another question comes up.
00:09:59.840 --> 00:10:01.440
What response will I give?
00:10:01.679 --> 00:10:04.480
What response will I be glad I chose an hour from now?
00:10:04.639 --> 00:10:07.919
Now there's a little daylight between the trigger and your response.
00:10:08.159 --> 00:10:10.080
So you pick up the phone again.
00:10:10.320 --> 00:10:11.759
Maybe you write something different.
00:10:11.919 --> 00:10:14.960
Maybe you decide you need more information before you answer.
00:10:15.200 --> 00:10:22.000
Or maybe you decide Tuesday evening will survive quite nicely without your response, and you put your phone back down.
00:10:22.159 --> 00:10:22.879
That's it.
00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:27.360
No dramatic breakthrough, no choir singing in the background.
00:10:27.679 --> 00:10:32.639
No one even knows what happened except you and the Lord.
00:10:32.960 --> 00:10:33.519
Wow.
00:10:33.840 --> 00:10:35.919
That's what growth often looks like.
00:10:36.320 --> 00:10:42.000
Not dramatic, not perfect, just a little different than last time.
00:10:42.559 --> 00:10:44.720
And I think sometimes we miss that.
00:10:44.960 --> 00:10:54.240
Sometimes we're looking for some enormous spiritual breakthrough while God is quietly doing something in us on that ordinary Tuesday afternoon, one day at a time.
00:10:54.799 --> 00:10:56.159
You notice sooner.
00:10:56.399 --> 00:10:57.840
You pause a little longer.
00:10:58.080 --> 00:11:02.000
You recognize that familiar road before you get too far down it.
00:11:02.240 --> 00:11:07.279
Sometimes you'll still blow it, I know I do, and sometimes you'll still send the email.
00:11:07.600 --> 00:11:12.000
And sometimes the words will be out of your mouth before you can catch 'em.
00:11:12.240 --> 00:11:18.480
And sometimes the spiritual discipline for Wednesday morning will simply be saying, I was wrong.
00:11:18.799 --> 00:11:20.159
Will you forgive me?
00:11:20.480 --> 00:11:22.720
Because you see, that's training too.
00:11:22.960 --> 00:11:36.559
Then another Tuesday comes another conversation, another message, another opportunity for growth and grace, and gradually, something that once felt automatic doesn't quite have the same grip on you it had before.
00:11:36.879 --> 00:11:45.600
There's a little more space, a little more freedom to choose, and one day you realize I am not responding the knee-jerk way I used to.
00:11:46.080 --> 00:11:48.639
That, my friend, is resilient faith.
00:11:49.200 --> 00:11:52.879
You see, the Holy Spirit's been at work in you all along.
00:11:53.200 --> 00:11:56.960
And those ordinary choices you've been making have been part of that work.
00:11:57.279 --> 00:12:02.559
Maybe the question this week isn't, how can I have more self-control the next time something happens?
00:12:03.039 --> 00:12:06.559
Maybe the question is, what am I practicing now?
00:12:07.360 --> 00:12:10.480
Because another Tuesday afternoon will come soon.
00:12:10.720 --> 00:12:20.399
Another difficult conversation, another unexpected message, another moment when something pushes exactly the right button at exactly the right or wrong time.
00:12:20.559 --> 00:12:24.879
And when it does, you won't suddenly manufacture self-control.
00:12:25.360 --> 00:12:29.919
You'll bring in the moment some of what God has already been growing in you.
00:12:30.240 --> 00:12:34.080
Because you've been training the guard long before you needed him.
00:12:34.480 --> 00:12:37.279
You've been training that voice to listen.
00:12:37.440 --> 00:12:39.679
You've been training your mind to respond.
00:12:39.840 --> 00:12:46.559
If you'd like to go deeper into this idea, I've written a little article called You Don't Build Self-Esteem in the Moment You Need It.
00:12:46.639 --> 00:12:48.639
You'll find the link in the show notes.
00:12:48.799 --> 00:12:56.799

Thanks again for spending a few minutes with you today.

Thanks so much for joining me today.
00:13:11.919 --> 00:13:19.679
I'd just like to encourage you that this is the day that the Lord has made, and I'll make a choice to rejoice and be glad in it.

See you next time.
00:13:20.960 --> 00:13:21.840
