ÜBER DIESE EPISODE
In this gripping twenty-second installment of our Jack Ruby miniseries, we look past the convenient post-assassination caricature of Jack Ruby as a pathetic, lonely "police buff" who brought free pizza to headquarters. Instead, we peel back the layers of the Dallas Police Department and FBI files to expose a highly calculating, double-shielded operator who survived on the very edge of the law for sixteen years. We reconstruct the shadowy 1953-1955 gambling hustle Jack ran alongside swindler Harry Hall (alias Harry Sinclair Jr.), beating local gamblers out of nearly $80,000 while boasting of his extensive "juice" with Dallas law enforcement—a transactional system of mutual protection that would shield him all the way until he pulled the trigger in the City Hall basement.
We dig into the highly sensitive, explosive allegations that surfaced on the very day of Jack's arrest. We trace the FBI's frantic hunt for "Mike Ryan"—a ghostly bookkeeper and car salesman whose real name was Roy William Pike—following tips that Ruby served as the official payoff man for the Dallas Vice Squad, receiving advance warnings of upcoming police raids to leak to his underworld associates. We contrast these denials with the blunt, firsthand accounts of carousel employees and dancers like Beatrice Colgrove (known on stage as Najada). Colgrove recounted the chilling moment when Ruby slapped her in front of a Dallas vice lieutenant, only for the officer to laugh in her face and tell her she was crazy.
Furthermore, we reconstruct the legendary after-hours social gatherings that the Dallas Police Department desperately tried to erase behind a blue wall of silence. We examine the testimony of carousel photographer and bartender James H. "Jimmy" Rhodes, who detailed an after-hours party where exactly fourteen members of the Dallas Vice Squad drank Coca-Colas on Jack's tab. We dismantle the "shift schedule" defense mounted by Police Chief Jesse Curry—who claimed such a gathering was physically impossible—by exposing how his estimate of the vice squad's total strength perfectly matched the bartender's count of fourteen men. Finally, we explore Ruby’s parallel track as a potential criminal informant for FBI Special Agent Charles Flynn, showing how Jack attempted to use federal contacts to run a snitching campaign against his bitter rivals, Abe and Barney Weinstein, while projecting an aura of federal immunity to local cops.
