00:00:05.440 --> 00:00:17.600
Welcome to this episode of Fields Notes, our Fields Church podcast, where we get to talk more about our church, think about difficult questions, and discuss how we live the Christian life together.
00:00:17.839 --> 00:00:24.559
Our prayer is that this time would encourage us to treasure Christ more and have a deeper love for his people.
00:00:25.519 --> 00:00:27.600
Well, Fields Notes listeners, welcome back.
00:00:27.760 --> 00:00:35.439
If you're following along on the episode tags of our episodes, this is the start of season three of Fields Notes.
00:00:35.520 --> 00:00:36.799
Why do we have seasons?
00:00:36.960 --> 00:00:38.240
That's just what you do, I guess.
00:00:38.320 --> 00:00:40.399
So we have season three, episode one.
00:00:40.719 --> 00:00:47.439
I'm here today with none other than Jeffrey Strickland, Jefferson Strickland, just Jeff Strickland, and Brayden Perry.
00:00:48.240 --> 00:00:48.880
My friends.
00:00:49.840 --> 00:00:51.439
You don't really have there's no other way to go.
00:00:51.679 --> 00:00:52.719
Bray Doni Bray.
00:00:54.640 --> 00:00:54.799
Yeah.
00:00:54.960 --> 00:00:55.280
Anyways.
00:00:55.600 --> 00:00:56.799
Did you have a nickname in high school?
00:00:57.280 --> 00:00:59.439
It was mostly related to like my last name.
00:00:59.520 --> 00:00:59.679
Yeah.
00:00:59.759 --> 00:00:59.840
Yeah.
00:01:00.159 --> 00:01:02.640
Say everybody call me Strick in high school.
00:01:02.880 --> 00:01:18.560
Anyways, we're here talking today about something that is uh, I think by the time this releases will have already begun, but something coming up in our church, we actually have a new round of classes coming up this fall for our church, which I think people maybe vaguely know about in our church, but not some people might know very well, some people might not.
00:01:18.640 --> 00:01:22.640
This might be brand new information to you that we do some classes at the Fields Church.
00:01:22.719 --> 00:01:31.200
We are in school session in some sort of sense for the Fields Church in that um, which Brayton has kind of headed up since his time of being here.
00:01:31.359 --> 00:01:47.519
And uh, we want to talk a little bit about that, partly for um for us to know what's going on in our church, uh, partly a little bit of a um encouragement for you listening to consider coming to one of or more of uh these classes, uh, and just for us to even think about the topics that we're gonna talk about in these classes.
00:01:47.599 --> 00:01:48.319
I'm excited for it.
00:01:48.400 --> 00:01:50.159
I think it's gonna be help to us listening.
00:01:50.319 --> 00:01:57.680
So we're talking about our classes coming up at the Fields Church, which I do believe the official title, Braden correct me, are the foundations classes.
00:01:57.760 --> 00:01:58.560
Is that what we're calling them?
00:01:58.879 --> 00:01:59.680
Foundations classes.
00:01:59.840 --> 00:02:03.519
Thinking about that, these are gonna help us with the foundations of our faith.
00:02:03.920 --> 00:02:10.639
Help us understand those, learn those, grow in applying and living those, all sorts of things like that.
00:02:10.879 --> 00:02:20.319
So these would be classes that would sort of be like, hey, these are things that are really helpful to know if you're a Christian, are going to live the Christian life, uh, things like that.
00:02:20.479 --> 00:02:20.719
Yeah.
00:02:20.800 --> 00:02:21.039
Yeah.
00:02:21.199 --> 00:02:23.759
And we've got three classes coming up this fall.
00:02:23.919 --> 00:02:29.759
The first of which is a class on worship, which I think you came up with the title, Braden, is titled From Sunday to Monday.
00:02:29.840 --> 00:02:30.319
Is that right?
00:02:30.560 --> 00:02:32.000
Yeah, I actually don't even remember, but yeah.
00:02:32.240 --> 00:02:32.800
Somehow we have that.
00:02:33.039 --> 00:02:33.520
I'll take credit.
00:02:33.919 --> 00:02:36.159
We only worship on Sunday to then Monday in that.
00:02:36.240 --> 00:02:37.599
I was like Yep, just between those two.
00:02:37.919 --> 00:02:46.960
There is a confusing way to understand that where you think of just Sunday to Monday, but your point is taking what we do on Sunday morning into our weeks on Monday.
00:02:47.280 --> 00:02:47.599
There it is.
00:02:47.680 --> 00:02:47.919
Yep.
00:02:48.080 --> 00:02:49.520
Well, that's the first class coming up.
00:02:49.599 --> 00:02:54.159
It is gonna be on Thursdays here, uh, kind of at the end of August, but into September.
00:02:54.319 --> 00:02:57.680
Braden, you want to tell us a little bit about this first class on worship?
00:02:57.759 --> 00:03:03.759
Uh, maybe you don't have to you don't have to teach the class to us, but who is teaching it and what should we expect from this class?
00:03:04.159 --> 00:03:09.680
Braden, I assume that you're gonna get out your guitar and it's gonna be about Braden does play guitar.
00:03:09.840 --> 00:03:12.240
I know everybody does except for me in this group.
00:03:12.479 --> 00:03:14.000
I think you play a little guitar too, don't you?
00:03:14.479 --> 00:03:15.680
I've seen your guitar in your office.
00:03:15.840 --> 00:03:16.240
I have a guitar.
00:03:16.479 --> 00:03:17.199
Jeff can strumble.
00:03:17.360 --> 00:03:21.520
I don't know if you can do a little strumming technically say I play guitar at all.
00:03:21.680 --> 00:03:26.400
I think I speak more Spanish than I play guitar, so and I don't speak Spanish well.
00:03:26.879 --> 00:03:27.280
That's right.
00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:28.479
Bilingual over there.
00:03:28.639 --> 00:03:31.120
Braden, get into your uh start class.
00:03:31.199 --> 00:03:37.680
Uh, if you're listening to this, maybe right now, and uh you've already passed the first week of class, please come.
00:03:37.759 --> 00:03:43.439
We'd love to have you come, even if you're jumping into week two of from Sunday to Monday, thinking about theology of worship.
00:03:43.599 --> 00:03:45.840
Uh, Jim and myself are gonna be teaching.
00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:48.960
So we're each gonna teach two weeks of that four-week class.
00:03:49.120 --> 00:03:58.639
Um, and we're gonna be uh kind of yeah, exploring a little bit of in some ways, worship can just be kind of like a little bit of a nebulous term, kind of something that we throw out there.
00:03:58.719 --> 00:04:02.879
And probably what first comes into our mind when we think about that is uh singing.
00:04:03.039 --> 00:04:09.280
We think just like what Jeff just said, that I'm gonna get out my guitar and that's what I'm gonna do, and we're just gonna sing together, which you know, who knows?
00:04:09.439 --> 00:04:11.039
Maybe come and you'll you'll be surprised.
00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:11.680
We'll find out.
00:04:12.159 --> 00:04:18.079
But uh really uh worship has much more all-encompassing all of life than that.
00:04:18.160 --> 00:04:21.680
And so we're gonna talk about uh what it is, what do we mean when we're talking about worship?
00:04:21.759 --> 00:04:29.199
And then we're gonna maybe specifically look at some areas of life where we're where we especially are worshiping or where God calls us to worship.
00:04:29.360 --> 00:04:33.199
So we're gonna think about corporate worship, about our Sunday gatherings for one of our classes.
00:04:33.279 --> 00:04:36.319
We're gonna think about family worship, how do you lead your family in worship?
00:04:36.399 --> 00:04:44.480
And then we're gonna think about how does how does all of my life, uh, especially thinking about Romans 12, 12, 1 and 2, they're presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice.
00:04:44.560 --> 00:04:47.199
Like, how do we live all of life as worship to God?
00:04:47.279 --> 00:04:53.680
So those will be kind of some of the topics that we'll cover in our class uh during uh these first upcoming weeks.
00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:56.000
Sounds like it's gonna be pretty practical.
00:04:56.240 --> 00:04:56.800
Yeah, we hope.
00:04:57.120 --> 00:05:05.839
There's a lot of really just helpful, like down to earth, like what does this look like in the home, at work, in the car, you know, like things like that.
00:05:05.920 --> 00:05:06.959
Yeah, that's super exciting.
00:05:07.120 --> 00:05:22.800
Yeah, that's our hope for all these classes, is especially that we don't want to just have them be class like class, like you learn math or you learn science, and it's like something that's you know good to know, helpful that I understand how to multiply things, but maybe not gonna always use that.
00:05:22.879 --> 00:05:23.839
Maybe sorry, Joe.
00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:25.439
Uh but math teacher and me.
00:05:25.839 --> 00:05:35.199
We're always doing math, but um, but we we really do want to, even in the midst of these classes, which are yes, we want to think with our minds, also then apply with our hearts and lives.
00:05:35.279 --> 00:05:36.879
Like, how do we do, how do we live this out?
00:05:36.959 --> 00:05:39.279
How do how does this gonna affect our Christian lives?
00:05:39.439 --> 00:05:46.079
Uh, we do want to do that, uh, and then especially be able to do that in community together uh with other brothers and sisters from the fields.
00:05:46.319 --> 00:05:46.560
Awesome.
00:05:46.639 --> 00:05:46.959
That's great.
00:05:47.040 --> 00:05:49.439
Well, that's our first class coming up, a class on worship.
00:05:49.600 --> 00:05:58.399
Uh, the second class this fall, uh, gonna be mainly in October and November, Jeff is teaching and it's a class on Calvinism.
00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:01.920
Jeff, do you want to talk a little bit about is your title what is Calvinism?
00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:02.319
Is that right?
00:06:02.480 --> 00:06:04.240
I think it's what is Calvinism Really?
00:06:04.480 --> 00:06:05.680
What is Calvinism really?
00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:06.160
Yeah.
00:06:06.800 --> 00:06:08.639
Do you want to share a little bit, Jeff?
00:06:08.800 --> 00:06:10.319
What is Calvinism really?
00:06:10.480 --> 00:06:12.959
Or do you want to, yeah, tell us a little bit of all you want to tell?
00:06:13.439 --> 00:06:14.160
Everyone's asking.
00:06:14.480 --> 00:06:15.040
It's the question.
00:06:15.279 --> 00:06:16.639
You'll probably end up saying come to the class.
00:06:16.720 --> 00:06:17.439
But uh, that is.
00:06:17.519 --> 00:06:19.439
I mean, I think that's part in part the idea.
00:06:19.600 --> 00:06:27.839
I mean, one of the things that I love to teach is uh theology and and really diving into what does this Bible say about uh certain topics?
00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:32.800
And really, when you're talking about Calvinism and the way that we'll look at it is what does the Bible say about salvation?
00:06:32.959 --> 00:06:38.879
And particularly how is it that God saves us and uh and his sovereignty in salvation?
00:06:39.040 --> 00:06:41.279
Um, and so that's what we're gonna look at.
00:06:41.360 --> 00:06:46.639
And I think one of the things I love about these classes, in one sense, I wouldn't do this on a Sunday morning.
00:06:46.800 --> 00:06:56.079
Uh, most Sundays when we gather, we're preaching directly from the text and we're preaching uh a passage uh or preaching a book of the Bible in order.
00:06:56.160 --> 00:06:59.040
And so for me, I'm like, oh, I don't think I'd ever do a sermon series.
00:06:59.199 --> 00:07:04.720
I mean, I I could, but I probably wouldn't do a sermon series uh on Calvinism or something like that.
00:07:04.800 --> 00:07:12.079
It just I think there's just better ways for us to spend our time on Sunday mornings as far as what we do uh in our Sunday morning gatherings.
00:07:12.240 --> 00:07:20.000
But a class is a really great opportunity to really learn um about a topic or a subject uh like this.
00:07:20.079 --> 00:07:33.040
And I think there's a lot of people, I'm our church uh is unashamedly, um, we believe in a big God, um, a God who is all powerful, a God who is in control, a God who is sovereign, who is king.
00:07:33.120 --> 00:07:41.920
Um, and I think there are a lot of questions on if God is king, if he is really sovereign, then what does that mean for salvation?
00:07:42.160 --> 00:07:49.360
And and what does that mean on how I think about myself and my own free will and freedom and all these sorts of questions?
00:07:49.519 --> 00:07:56.319
I mean, a lot of questions come up in this area of God's sovereignty and man's responsibility or freedom.
00:07:56.480 --> 00:08:11.360
And I would love to, this class is sort of an opportunity for us to say, well, what what really does Calvinism, uh, which a lot of people understand as those five points uh that often people will hear in kind of the isn't it, it's not an isn't an acronym?
00:08:11.439 --> 00:08:12.720
Um, that's TULA.
00:08:13.439 --> 00:08:15.199
Yeah, I think it's an acronym, I think it's the right word.
00:08:15.279 --> 00:08:21.439
Uh, total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, perseverance of the saints.
00:08:21.680 --> 00:08:25.360
And that's what we're gonna walk through in five classes, is those five doctrines.
00:08:25.439 --> 00:08:31.360
And I think it'll be really helpful for people just to see, oh, okay, that's what actually is meant by these things.
00:08:31.439 --> 00:08:32.399
That's what's being taught.
00:08:32.559 --> 00:08:33.919
I've I've said this many times.
00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:39.120
Like the point of this class is not necessarily to convince everyone of Calvinism.
00:08:39.279 --> 00:08:43.120
Um, I and honestly, in some ways, I don't really care about Calvinism.
00:08:43.279 --> 00:08:44.960
I care about what the Bible teaches.
00:08:45.039 --> 00:08:53.919
Um, and the and this is really a class for us to try to understand well uh what the Bible teaches about a really important topic of our salvation.
00:08:54.080 --> 00:08:55.440
So that's what we're gonna be digging into.
00:08:55.919 --> 00:08:56.320
Sounds great.
00:08:56.399 --> 00:08:57.519
I think I mean I think it'd be really helpful.
00:08:57.600 --> 00:09:05.039
I think uh myself included, but a lot of us when we come across Calvinism, reformed theology, we can very easily misunderstand things.
00:09:05.120 --> 00:09:08.639
You've been huge help to me, Jeff, in just explaining some of the complexities.
00:09:08.720 --> 00:09:09.840
And it's very complex in that.
00:09:09.919 --> 00:09:14.000
So I think it'll be a huge help to um a lot of us, just even understanding, in a sense, your title.
00:09:14.159 --> 00:09:15.519
What is Calvinism really?
00:09:15.600 --> 00:09:15.919
Yeah.
00:09:16.080 --> 00:09:17.519
Um so that'll be great.
00:09:17.600 --> 00:09:20.639
That's gonna be in October and November and on Mondays, right?
00:09:20.799 --> 00:09:21.440
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:09:21.519 --> 00:09:23.279
I think there's just a lot of misunderstandings.
00:09:23.360 --> 00:09:26.799
And so that's really the the hope is just to correct those misunderstandings.
00:09:26.879 --> 00:09:28.799
And uh, I think it'll be a great class.
00:09:28.879 --> 00:09:29.519
I'm really excited.
00:09:29.600 --> 00:09:30.480
Bring your questions.
00:09:30.559 --> 00:09:39.919
Um, and this will be a these are classes, are opportunities for you to ask questions that you've maybe always wanted to ask, but never knew who to ask, or maybe didn't even feel really free to ask.
00:09:40.080 --> 00:09:42.639
Man, this is what we want to dig into um as a church.
00:09:42.720 --> 00:09:43.440
That's what it means.
00:09:43.519 --> 00:09:50.960
If you can't learn about who God is and what God has done and about the Bible at church, along with brothers and sisters in Christ, well, where are you gonna learn?
00:09:51.039 --> 00:09:53.200
Um, so we want to do this in community with one another.
00:09:53.279 --> 00:09:54.159
So I'm excited about it.
00:09:54.720 --> 00:09:55.039
Sounds good.
00:09:55.279 --> 00:09:58.000
I remember asking you about, are you sure you want to do this class?
00:09:58.240 --> 00:09:59.600
And uh it's just yeah, good.
00:09:59.679 --> 00:10:13.360
Even thinking about, yeah, well, we want to be able to help people think through things that they might find difficult or just misunderstand, helping people just understand things like that and and have a space where they can ask questions like that, which I think is really good.
00:10:13.600 --> 00:10:20.799
Yeah, I think one of the things that I've always wanted to do a little bit of is just I feel like Calvinism almost is like politics.
00:10:20.960 --> 00:10:25.279
Like it's just certain things you're like, oh, I don't think we're supposed to talk about that, or I don't think we can dig into that.
00:10:25.360 --> 00:10:26.639
And I was just like, why not?
00:10:26.879 --> 00:10:27.919
Like, why shouldn't we?
00:10:28.080 --> 00:10:34.720
Like, let's dig in as a church with people we know and trust and uh alongside brothers and sisters in Christ that we love.
00:10:34.799 --> 00:10:36.720
And so yeah, that's the idea behind this.
00:10:36.799 --> 00:10:43.360
It really isn't like uh I am, I mean, probably even with the title a little bit trying to get your interest, like for sure.
00:10:43.519 --> 00:10:44.240
A little punchy, yeah.
00:10:44.320 --> 00:10:45.200
Yeah, a little punchy.
00:10:45.279 --> 00:10:49.120
Um, but I think it's I think it's a really important thing to consider.
00:10:49.759 --> 00:10:51.679
Well, we're looking forward to that class, Jeff.
00:10:51.840 --> 00:10:58.000
The third class we have this fall in the the later fall, uh, is a class on what's called biblical theology.
00:10:58.080 --> 00:11:00.960
And I do believe the fun name for this class is cover to cover.
00:11:01.039 --> 00:11:01.600
Am I right, Braden?
00:11:01.840 --> 00:11:02.399
That's right.
00:11:02.559 --> 00:11:03.519
Um name.
00:11:03.679 --> 00:11:04.799
Braden, tell us a little bit about this.
00:11:05.039 --> 00:11:08.960
This is gonna be in MRI, Braden, the end of November and then even into December, right?
00:11:09.039 --> 00:11:09.919
Maybe most of December.
00:11:10.159 --> 00:11:11.200
Uh yeah, most of November.
00:11:11.279 --> 00:11:14.799
I think maybe just the last one will be the first day or two of December or something like that.
00:11:14.960 --> 00:11:18.080
So um, yeah, number, another class on Thursdays.
00:11:18.240 --> 00:11:19.360
Um, looking forward to that.
00:11:19.440 --> 00:11:22.080
It'll be kind of, yeah, looking at interrupt us for a second too.
00:11:22.159 --> 00:11:22.559
Just real quick.
00:11:22.720 --> 00:11:27.440
All these classes are gonna be at our Fields Church office, the garage, which we have here, which we're recording at here.
00:11:27.519 --> 00:11:29.919
Now, if you're wondering, also the recording studio, yeah.
00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:30.240
Uh-huh.
00:11:30.320 --> 00:11:31.759
It's a big functions in many ways.
00:11:31.919 --> 00:11:35.919
It's a multi-functional space we have here, which we're trying to make the most of.
00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:37.120
That's where these classes are gonna be at.
00:11:37.200 --> 00:11:40.559
There's more details, I'm sure you can find on our website of how to get here and those sorts of things.
00:11:40.639 --> 00:11:41.519
But that's where these classes will be at.
00:11:41.679 --> 00:11:44.080
And you can actually sign up for any and all of these right now.
00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:45.120
They're all on the website.
00:11:45.200 --> 00:11:45.919
So go do that.
00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:46.960
That's the shameless plug.
00:11:47.120 --> 00:11:51.679
I will say too, every once in a while, um, you know, we do have somewhat limited space.
00:11:51.759 --> 00:11:55.919
We move a lot of space at the garage, but we had a couple classes that you've gotten put on a wait list.
00:11:56.159 --> 00:11:57.519
I mean, they they've gotten that big.
00:11:57.679 --> 00:12:00.879
Um, so yeah, if you're gonna sign up, sign up quick and and dig in.
00:12:01.039 --> 00:12:02.240
You've earned it limited atonement.
00:12:02.320 --> 00:12:03.200
Is that you're referring to Jeff?
00:12:03.360 --> 00:12:03.600
That's right.
00:12:03.679 --> 00:12:04.480
It's no.
00:12:04.720 --> 00:12:06.720
I think it honestly, you'll add it.
00:12:06.799 --> 00:12:07.600
I regret saying that, right?
00:12:08.000 --> 00:12:10.080
It's it's the dad joke of theology.
00:12:10.480 --> 00:12:13.360
We're we're actually gonna talk about that even a little bit different.
00:12:13.519 --> 00:12:14.399
Oh man, oh, good.
00:12:14.559 --> 00:12:15.759
Particular redemption.
00:12:15.840 --> 00:12:17.120
Oh there we go.
00:12:17.360 --> 00:12:18.480
I'm so sorry, Braden.
00:12:18.639 --> 00:12:19.279
I cut you off.
00:12:19.519 --> 00:12:20.080
Oh, that's great.
00:12:20.240 --> 00:12:23.840
You were talking about your the the this is the third class of the of the semester.
00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:24.240
Yep.
00:12:24.480 --> 00:12:27.120
Biblical theology, kind of November into December.
00:12:27.360 --> 00:12:28.080
Tell us a little bit.
00:12:28.240 --> 00:12:32.799
So, first off, biblical theology is a word I was like, okay, I think a lot of us know those words.
00:12:32.879 --> 00:12:34.960
I know the word biblical, I know the word theology.
00:12:35.120 --> 00:12:39.440
Some people even use them uh when they use those words together, use biblical theology differently.
00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:43.120
Tell us a little about what do you mean when you say the word biblical theology?
00:12:43.200 --> 00:12:46.159
Um, and then what's this class going to then talk about because of that?
00:12:46.480 --> 00:12:56.159
Yeah, so I think I think normally the way that the term is used is coming to the Bible a little bit on its own terms, and then tracing theology through the Bible.
00:12:56.320 --> 00:13:05.039
So, so finding a theme or some sort of thing that the Bible is talking about, and then looking at it through and over the course of the storyline of scripture.
00:13:05.200 --> 00:13:08.720
Uh in comparison to a little bit of systematic theology.
00:13:08.799 --> 00:13:16.480
Obviously, they're not completely divorced from one another, but systematic is more like let's take a topic and pick it and then see where the Bible talks about that thing.
00:13:16.639 --> 00:13:18.240
So that's maybe the difference between them.
00:13:18.399 --> 00:13:26.000
So in the idea of cover to cover, biblical theology is in some ways tracing themes through the Bible, uh, helping us understand.
00:13:26.080 --> 00:13:28.240
In some ways, it helps put the Bible together, I think.
00:13:28.480 --> 00:13:42.000
And I think that's really helpful when we are reading our Bibles and we're trying to figure out what in the world is happening here in Numbers and what am I supposed to do with that today on my Wednesday, uh, as I just read this.
00:13:42.159 --> 00:13:49.279
Um, so I I think in some ways this helps us to be able to put the Bible together, to see themes, to think about Christ.
00:13:49.440 --> 00:14:22.080
Um, and and so biblical theology is just really helpful in that so that you can read the Bible from cover to cover and be able to trace Christ and also how this might apply to your life, and not just be like, okay, well, you know, maybe I'm supposed to live more like this person in the Bible, but be able to really get out of it, I think, the meaning of the text and also understand then more how that uh especially leads us to the gospel and our need for Christ through those things and and tracing things like themes, um, yeah, other kind of things along those lines uh help us to uh read the Bible really in that way.
00:14:22.159 --> 00:14:23.840
So that's what I'm excited to get to talk about.
00:14:23.919 --> 00:14:32.080
It's uh it's one thing that I uh love getting to share and help people with is how to read their Bibles, especially the parts that we're less inclined to read.
00:14:32.320 --> 00:14:35.120
Um so I'm excited that we can kind of do that together.
00:14:35.440 --> 00:14:44.240
I think sometimes when people think about biblical theology, a a helpful word is the story of the Bible, like really helping people to see this overarching story.
00:14:44.399 --> 00:14:49.279
You know, I think sometimes the Bible is 66 books, and it's helpful to know that and see that.
00:14:49.360 --> 00:15:01.360
And there's a lot of different uh authors uh who have written those different books, but we believe um that the scripture is has one author overall, and that is God Himself.
00:15:01.519 --> 00:15:07.039
And so and really scripture is one story, um, one message.
00:15:07.200 --> 00:15:08.399
There's one hero.
00:15:08.559 --> 00:15:10.480
And and so it's really an incredible thing.
00:15:10.639 --> 00:15:30.720
I mean, I think for many of us, probably all three of us sitting at this table, one of the things that has been most exciting and encouraging to us as we have grown in our understanding of scripture is to see how the Bible tells this wonder, wondrous true story of humanity and God and Christ and um this world and things like that.
00:15:30.879 --> 00:15:36.960
So yeah, and and it just even we've been in Isaiah and Revelation, a lot of biblical theology to have done there.
00:15:37.120 --> 00:15:44.480
Um, and so I think of you start thinking about maybe even just to put some flesh on a couple ideas, like the temple, you know, God's dwelling with us.
00:15:44.639 --> 00:15:52.639
You can trace that from Eden to the tabernacle, to the temple, to Jesus, to the church, to the new heavens, the new earth.
00:15:52.720 --> 00:15:57.600
Like, I mean, there's just some wondrous sorts of things that we can trace uh in scripture that's so cool.
00:15:57.679 --> 00:16:01.600
And you can do that with a lot of different topics and ideas.
00:16:01.840 --> 00:16:02.559
So yeah.
00:16:02.960 --> 00:16:06.960
Yeah, in part this is uh, though I haven't necessarily put this out there yet.
00:16:07.120 --> 00:16:13.360
I am thinking about doing a class at the beginning of the year of something like how to get through Leviticus.
00:16:14.000 --> 00:16:22.399
And essentially kind of piggybacking off of this idea a little bit, but more so in some books that are harder right at the beginning of maybe your reading plan.
00:16:22.480 --> 00:16:28.399
So maybe if you're thinking, man, next year, I'd love to read through the whole Bible trying to do that in 2027.
00:16:28.639 --> 00:16:32.320
We've got some help for you in in this class and maybe another one coming at the beginning of the year.
00:16:32.480 --> 00:16:43.600
And if you're one of those many people that I told we were gonna preach through Leviticus this fall and we're not doing that, then you can get into Braden's class and get a little help this semester and then also next semester.
00:16:44.399 --> 00:16:44.960
Very cool.
00:16:45.120 --> 00:16:54.320
Uh well, maybe maybe like a at a big picture level, not even necessarily these nitty-gritty classes, but maybe why in why in particular are we doing classes at all as a church?
00:16:54.399 --> 00:16:56.159
What's kind of our goal of doing them?
00:16:56.240 --> 00:17:01.679
Uh, why do we think that's gonna be helpful to our people, a good use of our time and resources to uh offer these classes?
00:17:01.759 --> 00:17:04.640
So, Bray and Jeff, why are we doing why are we doing these?
00:17:04.960 --> 00:17:12.559
Yeah, I mean, I I think it's another opportunity for us to uh especially think about a way that we can learn theology.
00:17:12.640 --> 00:17:20.160
Uh that maybe we uh don't always like on Sunday mornings, we do hope that as we preach, we're not just trying to only think about all these concepts.
00:17:20.319 --> 00:17:22.880
We really are trying to think about how do we live this, right?
00:17:22.960 --> 00:17:27.839
That and then growth groups in some ways also were trying to apply scripture to life and some of those things.
00:17:27.920 --> 00:17:36.079
So they're so this isn't maybe more focused than some other spaces, though again, none of them are individually for that one thing.
00:17:36.160 --> 00:17:53.680
But uh they're they're more focused on a way that we learn, uh, some learning of theology, learning of who God is and what he's like and the scripture and just all sorts of different aspects of theology that maybe we don't have time to read a book about, but maybe we can attend a class for three or four weeks and and also do that, I think, in community.
00:17:53.759 --> 00:18:01.279
I think that's how we can learn from one another because maybe someone had a question about something that I've never thought of, but wow, I didn't know the answer to that at all when they asked that.
00:18:01.440 --> 00:18:03.200
Uh, and that might be a question, who knows?
00:18:03.279 --> 00:18:08.400
Maybe my coworker has, or maybe my neighbor has that I have a question, they have a question about God or about theology.
00:18:08.480 --> 00:18:13.279
And now I'm maybe more prepared to answer, to talk about that thing, to have thought through that.
00:18:13.440 --> 00:18:20.400
So um, I think a number of reasons, especially, yeah, learning and then doing that in community, I think is some of why we want to do these classes.
00:18:20.720 --> 00:18:30.160
Yeah, I've also often thought about it like, you know, it is, and I've kind of even hinted at this earlier, and I think you did too, but you know, Sunday mornings is a really unique gathering.
00:18:30.400 --> 00:18:32.720
It is our primary gathering as a church.
00:18:32.880 --> 00:18:43.599
And um, you know, obviously all three of us had have have had an opportunity, and I get a lot of opportunities to um preach and proclaim God's word to God's people uh on Sunday mornings.
00:18:43.759 --> 00:18:47.200
And that's a that's a unique and significant thing.
00:18:47.359 --> 00:18:54.079
Um, but there's a lot of things that I want to talk about on a Sunday morning that just wouldn't be right to add to a sermon.
00:18:54.240 --> 00:18:56.480
I don't think anybody's asking that I preach longer.
00:18:56.640 --> 00:19:00.079
Um, and so I think there's just so many questions that come up.
00:19:00.160 --> 00:19:03.839
And and in some ways you think, well, okay, well, small groups are awesome.
00:19:04.000 --> 00:19:06.880
So small groups aren't necessarily the best for education.
00:19:07.039 --> 00:19:09.920
That's not really what we're trying to do in a small group.
00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:17.440
Um, I think any of us who lead a small group, we wouldn't say necessarily that we've studied everything and we're teaching, we're more facilitating discussion.
00:19:17.519 --> 00:19:21.920
As Braden said, we're trying to apply God's word um as we live the life.
00:19:22.240 --> 00:19:37.039
Being in like a more formal education setting, and that doesn't mean straight lecture or anything like that, but just being in a giving the opportunities to really sit down and think through a topic biblically with a teacher, um, that sort of thing, that's really helpful.
00:19:37.200 --> 00:19:41.279
I mean, there's a reason why that's a much of what we have learned.
00:19:41.440 --> 00:19:45.119
Um, a good part of it, we would say, oh, we actually learned in a classroom with a teacher.
00:19:45.200 --> 00:19:49.279
Now we've learned a lot of stuff outside the classroom too, but the classroom's still really helpful.
00:19:49.359 --> 00:19:50.799
And I think that's true in the Christian life too.
00:19:50.880 --> 00:19:59.759
So these are just really good opportunities to be, as you said, really founded in key truths of the Christian life and of Christian theology.
00:20:00.640 --> 00:20:01.200
That's great.
00:20:01.359 --> 00:20:12.319
Uh, maybe a couple uh questions for people listening that they might have themselves of uh what if I'm have never been to a class before at the field church, because then we've a lot we've just the last year started offering classes.
00:20:12.480 --> 00:20:14.880
Um what should I expect when I come?
00:20:15.039 --> 00:20:18.319
I think some people might even be intimidated to think about coming to a class.
00:20:18.400 --> 00:20:19.759
Uh, so how should we think about that?
00:20:19.839 --> 00:20:22.720
Or um and you guys might even be different in the way you teach them too.
00:20:22.799 --> 00:20:23.920
Are they kind of more lectures?
00:20:24.000 --> 00:20:25.599
Are they gonna be more interactive?
00:20:25.759 --> 00:20:27.200
Do I have to do any homework for them?
00:20:27.359 --> 00:20:27.839
I don't know.
00:20:27.920 --> 00:20:29.519
That might be um something to think about.
00:20:29.599 --> 00:20:35.200
And then um, yeah, maybe most importantly, will there be any snacks at these at these classes?
00:20:35.680 --> 00:20:35.920
Brain.
00:20:36.400 --> 00:20:38.799
We probably don't even have a universal answer for most of those questions.
00:20:39.039 --> 00:20:46.559
However, I would say anyone who wants to, you know, grow and learn in their walk with Christ should come.
00:20:46.640 --> 00:20:48.880
So uh if you're a member of the Fields Church, you definitely should come.
00:20:48.960 --> 00:20:52.400
If you're uh coming just on Sundays, we'd love for you to come.
00:20:52.480 --> 00:20:53.279
You're welcome to come.
00:20:53.359 --> 00:20:56.559
We would love for you to even invite friends and have them come and join us.
00:20:56.640 --> 00:20:58.559
So anyone can come to these classes.
00:20:58.720 --> 00:21:04.160
Um, we do think that if I would really encourage if you're a member, uh, that you would come to one of the classes this fall.
00:21:04.480 --> 00:21:09.839
It'd be great if if we had our members going to maybe just one class every semester or so.
00:21:09.920 --> 00:21:15.279
Um, I think would be a really good goal for each one of us to be like, okay, I want to attend one of those classes.
00:21:15.359 --> 00:21:18.880
And even if you can't get four or four, but I'm gonna go to that one and go three of four.
00:21:18.960 --> 00:21:22.640
Like, I'm gonna make sure that's the main one I can get to and my schedule works out.
00:21:22.799 --> 00:21:24.079
Even go with my family, maybe.
00:21:24.160 --> 00:21:24.480
Yeah.
00:21:24.559 --> 00:21:26.880
Uh, all sorts of things like that would be really good.
00:21:27.039 --> 00:21:29.599
Um, sometimes there are snacks.
00:21:29.759 --> 00:21:32.559
Sometimes I've made coffee, sometimes there's not snacks.
00:21:32.640 --> 00:21:34.079
I don't know if there's always snacks.
00:21:34.160 --> 00:21:36.559
Uh, but you know, you should just come and you'll find out.
00:21:36.720 --> 00:21:38.640
Um, I don't think I've ever had snacks.
00:21:38.720 --> 00:21:40.000
I don't think I've ever had coffee.
00:21:40.240 --> 00:21:42.000
You just you're just coming straight for the teaching.
00:21:42.079 --> 00:21:43.279
If you're maybe you should come to my class.
00:21:43.440 --> 00:21:43.920
Yeah, that's good.
00:21:44.079 --> 00:21:46.559
There might be snacks at Braden's, probably not a Jeff.
00:21:46.799 --> 00:21:48.000
Probably not gonna be a mine.
00:21:48.079 --> 00:21:53.440
But I will say one of the encouraging things, I taught a class on eschatology, which is end times um last year.
00:21:53.680 --> 00:21:57.200
And it was we had students in that class.
00:21:57.359 --> 00:22:02.319
Um, we had very Mature senior adults in that class.
00:22:02.400 --> 00:22:05.440
Um, older Christians in that class.
00:22:05.599 --> 00:22:11.920
Um, we had guys in that class, we had girls in that class, we had all sorts of different ages, families, that sort of thing.
00:22:12.000 --> 00:22:13.119
That's something that's really cool too.
00:22:13.200 --> 00:22:24.079
Like, if you think about sometimes it's it is in when we talk about being like walking alongside other Christians, sometimes it's hard to do life with when you're in your 20s with a 70-year-old.
00:22:24.160 --> 00:22:25.519
Like that's sometimes just a little bit difficult.
00:22:25.680 --> 00:22:28.480
Different uh life stages, all that sort of thing.
00:22:28.640 --> 00:22:36.799
Classes are one of those opportunities that actually make a ton of sense for all different ages uh to be there and you can kind of dig in and really gain wisdom from each other.
00:22:36.880 --> 00:22:46.000
So that's one of my favorite parts about classes is that it it really is a diverse set of people from our church together kind of learning uh that I think is really helpful.
00:22:46.160 --> 00:22:53.839
And really, we try to teach our classes that no matter like how long you've been a Christian, how deep you are in these things, if you and I say that both ways.
00:22:54.000 --> 00:22:59.599
Like if you're a very new Christian, I am confident that uh you'll be able to understand and follow and get questions asked.
00:22:59.759 --> 00:23:01.519
Um, there's gonna be some things you don't understand.
00:23:01.599 --> 00:23:02.400
That's always the case.
00:23:02.559 --> 00:23:09.599
But even if you're been a Christian for a while, I think you will find each of these classes challenging and um new things to learn.
00:23:09.759 --> 00:23:16.720
I do think some of the classes, like I will often have very none of my homework is ever uh bur I hope not.
00:23:16.799 --> 00:23:19.279
It's not burdensome, it's more devotional.
00:23:19.440 --> 00:23:26.720
So we will I'll have somebody just be reading through this passage each day over the next week or think on this prayer, you know, things like that.
00:23:26.880 --> 00:23:30.799
So there'll be some minor things that you you can do.
00:23:30.960 --> 00:23:36.640
There's no, I've never uh done a test in my class, or there's no grades, uh, things like that.
00:23:36.720 --> 00:23:39.440
So they're really, I mean, I've really enjoyed teaching them.
00:23:39.599 --> 00:23:44.079
Um, and and I I feel like we've heard pretty good feedback from people uh last semester.
00:23:44.640 --> 00:23:56.319
Yeah, so even just to speak to a little bit of what the classes are like, there are gonna be obviously there's gonna be a good amount of teaching, lecture, that sort of thing, but there'll also be a good amount of like kind of breakout or opportunity for QA.
00:23:56.400 --> 00:23:57.680
Uh, some of that's gonna be involved.
00:23:57.759 --> 00:24:08.000
So you'll you'll be talking with people at your table about different things, probably at the beginning, or kind of thinking through an idea together or looking it up a passage or doing something along those sorts.
00:24:08.079 --> 00:24:13.759
So it's gonna be interactive so that you will have opportunity to get to know one another or even you know learn from one another.
00:24:13.839 --> 00:24:16.000
But then yeah, it will be a good amount of teaching as well.
00:24:16.079 --> 00:24:16.240
Yeah.
00:24:16.400 --> 00:24:26.160
Um, so yeah, and and then I think uh this this would help you uh kind of no matter who you are, uh whether you're newer to our church, newer Christian, uh, or been around for a while.
00:24:26.240 --> 00:24:27.759
We we think this would be really helpful for you.
00:24:27.839 --> 00:24:30.799
So yeah, maybe once one more thing, just on someone that's new.
00:24:30.880 --> 00:24:46.559
Um, I think sometimes it could be a little bit unnerving or um you'd be a little bit concerned, like, I don't know if I want to go into someone's house and meet with a small group and be a part of a group, you know, that sort of thing.
00:24:46.640 --> 00:24:51.359
That can be sometimes a little bit more difficult to think about, maybe just jumping into if you're a little bit newer to the church.
00:24:51.440 --> 00:24:56.160
And in some ways, we're like, yeah, we think it'd be better for you to get into the life of church before diving into a group.
00:24:56.559 --> 00:24:57.839
A class is great.
00:24:58.000 --> 00:25:11.599
You know, I mean, a class is a really great way to meet some people at the church and do so in an environment that isn't, I wouldn't say even if you're a little bit more introverted, things like that, it's not um, it's a pretty low bar um and it's a pretty easy step into some community.
00:25:11.759 --> 00:25:19.839
And I we both have pretty significant times before and after the class to just, you know, kind of dive into some relationships, talk some more fellowship.
00:25:21.359 --> 00:25:25.359
Well, if you're listening, hopefully you're encouraged to uh dive into one of these classes.
00:25:25.440 --> 00:25:28.079
Right now, going on is the worship class.
00:25:28.160 --> 00:25:32.880
And so um, yeah, there's more information on our church website as to uh how to come to these classes.
00:25:32.960 --> 00:25:34.559
We'd love for you to consider coming to them.
00:25:34.640 --> 00:25:52.079
And um, as someone who has sat in on uh your guys' teaching before of classes, uh, you guys do such a great job of I think uh what you guys talked about there of for people who don't know much, not making them feel like they are in the wrong place, and but also to spur on people who are uh experts in different fields too.
00:25:52.160 --> 00:25:57.279
So um, you guys have done such a good job in that, and I know the semester is gonna be a huge help and encouragement to our people in that.
00:25:57.440 --> 00:25:58.319
So thank you guys.
00:25:58.480 --> 00:26:00.240
We're looking forward to classes this fall.
00:26:00.400 --> 00:26:02.079
Any last notes before we sign off here?
00:26:02.319 --> 00:26:02.799
That's great.
00:26:02.880 --> 00:26:05.279
You can get registered on the website, and please do register.
00:26:05.359 --> 00:26:11.759
Oh, that does help us so we know that you're coming and also that there's space for you because we do want to make sure, as Jeff said.
00:26:12.160 --> 00:26:23.119
Yeah, I think a great thing to do would be right now, like just a very easy application, is just to go look at the classes and go, hey, I'm gonna I'm gonna try to go to one and I'm gonna try to grab a few friends to come with me.
00:26:23.200 --> 00:26:28.079
And and I think that would be a really I think you will find you'll be thankful for that you've done that.
00:26:28.160 --> 00:26:30.160
Um, and it will be an encouragement to your soul.
00:26:30.319 --> 00:26:30.480
Yep.
00:26:30.559 --> 00:26:36.319
Fieldschurch.co, go to the events page and then look for the foundation's classes, and there they are on there.
00:26:36.480 --> 00:26:39.119
All right, Jeff Braden, thank you guys for your time and thank you guys for listening.
00:26:39.359 --> 00:26:40.960
We are signing off for Fields Notes.
00:26:41.039 --> 00:26:41.839
We will see you.
00:26:41.920 --> 00:26:44.079
No, no, no, you will not see us, you will hear from us.
00:26:44.240 --> 00:26:45.440
Well, you'll see us hopefully on Sunday.
00:26:45.759 --> 00:26:46.319
See us in person.
00:26:46.400 --> 00:26:46.559
Yeah.
00:26:46.640 --> 00:26:47.440
I never know how to end it.
00:26:47.680 --> 00:26:49.200
But on the podcast, you will just hear from us.
00:26:49.440 --> 00:26:50.720
All right, I'm gonna press the done button.
00:26:50.799 --> 00:26:51.680
All right, signing off.
00:26:51.759 --> 00:26:52.640
Goodbye.
00:00:05.440 --> 00:00:17.600
Welcome to this episode of Fields Notes, our Fields Church podcast, where we get to talk more about our church, think about difficult questions, and discuss how we live the Christian life together.
00:00:17.839 --> 00:00:24.559
Our prayer is that this time would encourage us to treasure Christ more and have a deeper love for his people.
00:00:25.519 --> 00:00:27.600
Well, Fields Notes listeners, welcome back.
00:00:27.760 --> 00:00:35.439
If you're following along on the episode tags of our episodes, this is the start of season three of Fields Notes.
00:00:35.520 --> 00:00:36.799
Why do we have seasons?
00:00:36.960 --> 00:00:38.240
That's just what you do, I guess.
00:00:38.320 --> 00:00:40.399
So we have season three, episode one.
00:00:40.719 --> 00:00:47.439
I'm here today with none other than Jeffrey Strickland, Jefferson Strickland, just Jeff Strickland, and Brayden Perry.
00:00:48.240 --> 00:00:48.880
My friends.
00:00:49.840 --> 00:00:51.439
You don't really have there's no other way to go.
00:00:51.679 --> 00:00:52.719
Bray Doni Bray.
00:00:54.640 --> 00:00:54.799
Yeah.
00:00:54.960 --> 00:00:55.280
Anyways.
00:00:55.600 --> 00:00:56.799
Did you have a nickname in high school?
00:00:57.280 --> 00:00:59.439
It was mostly related to like my last name.
00:00:59.520 --> 00:00:59.679
Yeah.
00:00:59.759 --> 00:00:59.840
Yeah.
00:01:00.159 --> 00:01:02.640
Say everybody call me Strick in high school.
00:01:02.880 --> 00:01:18.560
Anyways, we're here talking today about something that is uh, I think by the time this releases will have already begun, but something coming up in our church, we actually have a new round of classes coming up this fall for our church, which I think people maybe vaguely know about in our church, but not some people might know very well, some people might not.
00:01:18.640 --> 00:01:22.640
This might be brand new information to you that we do some classes at the Fields Church.
00:01:22.719 --> 00:01:31.200
We are in school session in some sort of sense for the Fields Church in that um, which Brayton has kind of headed up since his time of being here.
00:01:31.359 --> 00:01:47.519
And uh, we want to talk a little bit about that, partly for um for us to know what's going on in our church, uh, partly a little bit of a um encouragement for you listening to consider coming to one of or more of uh these classes, uh, and just for us to even think about the topics that we're gonna talk about in these classes.
00:01:47.599 --> 00:01:48.319
I'm excited for it.
00:01:48.400 --> 00:01:50.159
I think it's gonna be help to us listening.
00:01:50.319 --> 00:01:57.680
So we're talking about our classes coming up at the Fields Church, which I do believe the official title, Braden correct me, are the foundations classes.
00:01:57.760 --> 00:01:58.560
Is that what we're calling them?
00:01:58.879 --> 00:01:59.680
Foundations classes.
00:01:59.840 --> 00:02:03.519
Thinking about that, these are gonna help us with the foundations of our faith.
00:02:03.920 --> 00:02:10.639
Help us understand those, learn those, grow in applying and living those, all sorts of things like that.
00:02:10.879 --> 00:02:20.319
So these would be classes that would sort of be like, hey, these are things that are really helpful to know if you're a Christian, are going to live the Christian life, uh, things like that.
00:02:20.479 --> 00:02:20.719
Yeah.
00:02:20.800 --> 00:02:21.039
Yeah.
00:02:21.199 --> 00:02:23.759
And we've got three classes coming up this fall.
00:02:23.919 --> 00:02:29.759
The first of which is a class on worship, which I think you came up with the title, Braden, is titled From Sunday to Monday.
00:02:29.840 --> 00:02:30.319
Is that right?
00:02:30.560 --> 00:02:32.000
Yeah, I actually don't even remember, but yeah.
00:02:32.240 --> 00:02:32.800
Somehow we have that.
00:02:33.039 --> 00:02:33.520
I'll take credit.
00:02:33.919 --> 00:02:36.159
We only worship on Sunday to then Monday in that.
00:02:36.240 --> 00:02:37.599
I was like Yep, just between those two.
00:02:37.919 --> 00:02:46.960
There is a confusing way to understand that where you think of just Sunday to Monday, but your point is taking what we do on Sunday morning into our weeks on Monday.
00:02:47.280 --> 00:02:47.599
There it is.
00:02:47.680 --> 00:02:47.919
Yep.
00:02:48.080 --> 00:02:49.520
Well, that's the first class coming up.
00:02:49.599 --> 00:02:54.159
It is gonna be on Thursdays here, uh, kind of at the end of August, but into September.
00:02:54.319 --> 00:02:57.680
Braden, you want to tell us a little bit about this first class on worship?
00:02:57.759 --> 00:03:03.759
Uh, maybe you don't have to you don't have to teach the class to us, but who is teaching it and what should we expect from this class?
00:03:04.159 --> 00:03:09.680
Braden, I assume that you're gonna get out your guitar and it's gonna be about Braden does play guitar.
00:03:09.840 --> 00:03:12.240
I know everybody does except for me in this group.
00:03:12.479 --> 00:03:14.000
I think you play a little guitar too, don't you?
00:03:14.479 --> 00:03:15.680
I've seen your guitar in your office.
00:03:15.840 --> 00:03:16.240
I have a guitar.
00:03:16.479 --> 00:03:17.199
Jeff can strumble.
00:03:17.360 --> 00:03:21.520
I don't know if you can do a little strumming technically say I play guitar at all.
00:03:21.680 --> 00:03:26.400
I think I speak more Spanish than I play guitar, so and I don't speak Spanish well.
00:03:26.879 --> 00:03:27.280
That's right.
00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:28.479
Bilingual over there.
00:03:28.639 --> 00:03:31.120
Braden, get into your uh start class.
00:03:31.199 --> 00:03:37.680
Uh, if you're listening to this, maybe right now, and uh you've already passed the first week of class, please come.
00:03:37.759 --> 00:03:43.439
We'd love to have you come, even if you're jumping into week two of from Sunday to Monday, thinking about theology of worship.
00:03:43.599 --> 00:03:45.840
Uh, Jim and myself are gonna be teaching.
00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:48.960
So we're each gonna teach two weeks of that four-week class.
00:03:49.120 --> 00:03:58.639
Um, and we're gonna be uh kind of yeah, exploring a little bit of in some ways, worship can just be kind of like a little bit of a nebulous term, kind of something that we throw out there.
00:03:58.719 --> 00:04:02.879
And probably what first comes into our mind when we think about that is uh singing.
00:04:03.039 --> 00:04:09.280
We think just like what Jeff just said, that I'm gonna get out my guitar and that's what I'm gonna do, and we're just gonna sing together, which you know, who knows?
00:04:09.439 --> 00:04:11.039
Maybe come and you'll you'll be surprised.
00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:11.680
We'll find out.
00:04:12.159 --> 00:04:18.079
But uh really uh worship has much more all-encompassing all of life than that.
00:04:18.160 --> 00:04:21.680
And so we're gonna talk about uh what it is, what do we mean when we're talking about worship?
00:04:21.759 --> 00:04:29.199
And then we're gonna maybe specifically look at some areas of life where we're where we especially are worshiping or where God calls us to worship.
00:04:29.360 --> 00:04:33.199
So we're gonna think about corporate worship, about our Sunday gatherings for one of our classes.
00:04:33.279 --> 00:04:36.319
We're gonna think about family worship, how do you lead your family in worship?
00:04:36.399 --> 00:04:44.480
And then we're gonna think about how does how does all of my life, uh, especially thinking about Romans 12, 12, 1 and 2, they're presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice.
00:04:44.560 --> 00:04:47.199
Like, how do we live all of life as worship to God?
00:04:47.279 --> 00:04:53.680
So those will be kind of some of the topics that we'll cover in our class uh during uh these first upcoming weeks.
00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:56.000
Sounds like it's gonna be pretty practical.
00:04:56.240 --> 00:04:56.800
Yeah, we hope.
00:04:57.120 --> 00:05:05.839
There's a lot of really just helpful, like down to earth, like what does this look like in the home, at work, in the car, you know, like things like that.
00:05:05.920 --> 00:05:06.959
Yeah, that's super exciting.
00:05:07.120 --> 00:05:22.800
Yeah, that's our hope for all these classes, is especially that we don't want to just have them be class like class, like you learn math or you learn science, and it's like something that's you know good to know, helpful that I understand how to multiply things, but maybe not gonna always use that.
00:05:22.879 --> 00:05:23.839
Maybe sorry, Joe.
00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:25.439
Uh but math teacher and me.
00:05:25.839 --> 00:05:35.199
We're always doing math, but um, but we we really do want to, even in the midst of these classes, which are yes, we want to think with our minds, also then apply with our hearts and lives.
00:05:35.279 --> 00:05:36.879
Like, how do we do, how do we live this out?
00:05:36.959 --> 00:05:39.279
How do how does this gonna affect our Christian lives?
00:05:39.439 --> 00:05:46.079
Uh, we do want to do that, uh, and then especially be able to do that in community together uh with other brothers and sisters from the fields.
00:05:46.319 --> 00:05:46.560
Awesome.
00:05:46.639 --> 00:05:46.959
That's great.
00:05:47.040 --> 00:05:49.439
Well, that's our first class coming up, a class on worship.
00:05:49.600 --> 00:05:58.399
Uh, the second class this fall, uh, gonna be mainly in October and November, Jeff is teaching and it's a class on Calvinism.
00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:01.920
Jeff, do you want to talk a little bit about is your title what is Calvinism?
00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:02.319
Is that right?
00:06:02.480 --> 00:06:04.240
I think it's what is Calvinism Really?
00:06:04.480 --> 00:06:05.680
What is Calvinism really?
00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:06.160
Yeah.
00:06:06.800 --> 00:06:08.639
Do you want to share a little bit, Jeff?
00:06:08.800 --> 00:06:10.319
What is Calvinism really?
00:06:10.480 --> 00:06:12.959
Or do you want to, yeah, tell us a little bit of all you want to tell?
00:06:13.439 --> 00:06:14.160
Everyone's asking.
00:06:14.480 --> 00:06:15.040
It's the question.
00:06:15.279 --> 00:06:16.639
You'll probably end up saying come to the class.
00:06:16.720 --> 00:06:17.439
But uh, that is.
00:06:17.519 --> 00:06:19.439
I mean, I think that's part in part the idea.
00:06:19.600 --> 00:06:27.839
I mean, one of the things that I love to teach is uh theology and and really diving into what does this Bible say about uh certain topics?
00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:32.800
And really, when you're talking about Calvinism and the way that we'll look at it is what does the Bible say about salvation?
00:06:32.959 --> 00:06:38.879
And particularly how is it that God saves us and uh and his sovereignty in salvation?
00:06:39.040 --> 00:06:41.279
Um, and so that's what we're gonna look at.
00:06:41.360 --> 00:06:46.639
And I think one of the things I love about these classes, in one sense, I wouldn't do this on a Sunday morning.
00:06:46.800 --> 00:06:56.079
Uh, most Sundays when we gather, we're preaching directly from the text and we're preaching uh a passage uh or preaching a book of the Bible in order.
00:06:56.160 --> 00:06:59.040
And so for me, I'm like, oh, I don't think I'd ever do a sermon series.
00:06:59.199 --> 00:07:04.720
I mean, I I could, but I probably wouldn't do a sermon series uh on Calvinism or something like that.
00:07:04.800 --> 00:07:12.079
It just I think there's just better ways for us to spend our time on Sunday mornings as far as what we do uh in our Sunday morning gatherings.
00:07:12.240 --> 00:07:20.000
But a class is a really great opportunity to really learn um about a topic or a subject uh like this.
00:07:20.079 --> 00:07:33.040
And I think there's a lot of people, I'm our church uh is unashamedly, um, we believe in a big God, um, a God who is all powerful, a God who is in control, a God who is sovereign, who is king.
00:07:33.120 --> 00:07:41.920
Um, and I think there are a lot of questions on if God is king, if he is really sovereign, then what does that mean for salvation?
00:07:42.160 --> 00:07:49.360
And and what does that mean on how I think about myself and my own free will and freedom and all these sorts of questions?
00:07:49.519 --> 00:07:56.319
I mean, a lot of questions come up in this area of God's sovereignty and man's responsibility or freedom.
00:07:56.480 --> 00:08:11.360
And I would love to, this class is sort of an opportunity for us to say, well, what what really does Calvinism, uh, which a lot of people understand as those five points uh that often people will hear in kind of the isn't it, it's not an isn't an acronym?
00:08:11.439 --> 00:08:12.720
Um, that's TULA.
00:08:13.439 --> 00:08:15.199
Yeah, I think it's an acronym, I think it's the right word.
00:08:15.279 --> 00:08:21.439
Uh, total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, perseverance of the saints.
00:08:21.680 --> 00:08:25.360
And that's what we're gonna walk through in five classes, is those five doctrines.
00:08:25.439 --> 00:08:31.360
And I think it'll be really helpful for people just to see, oh, okay, that's what actually is meant by these things.
00:08:31.439 --> 00:08:32.399
That's what's being taught.
00:08:32.559 --> 00:08:33.919
I've I've said this many times.
00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:39.120
Like the point of this class is not necessarily to convince everyone of Calvinism.
00:08:39.279 --> 00:08:43.120
Um, I and honestly, in some ways, I don't really care about Calvinism.
00:08:43.279 --> 00:08:44.960
I care about what the Bible teaches.
00:08:45.039 --> 00:08:53.919
Um, and the and this is really a class for us to try to understand well uh what the Bible teaches about a really important topic of our salvation.
00:08:54.080 --> 00:08:55.440
So that's what we're gonna be digging into.
00:08:55.919 --> 00:08:56.320
Sounds great.
00:08:56.399 --> 00:08:57.519
I think I mean I think it'd be really helpful.
00:08:57.600 --> 00:09:05.039
I think uh myself included, but a lot of us when we come across Calvinism, reformed theology, we can very easily misunderstand things.
00:09:05.120 --> 00:09:08.639
You've been huge help to me, Jeff, in just explaining some of the complexities.
00:09:08.720 --> 00:09:09.840
And it's very complex in that.
00:09:09.919 --> 00:09:14.000
So I think it'll be a huge help to um a lot of us, just even understanding, in a sense, your title.
00:09:14.159 --> 00:09:15.519
What is Calvinism really?
00:09:15.600 --> 00:09:15.919
Yeah.
00:09:16.080 --> 00:09:17.519
Um so that'll be great.
00:09:17.600 --> 00:09:20.639
That's gonna be in October and November and on Mondays, right?
00:09:20.799 --> 00:09:21.440
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:09:21.519 --> 00:09:23.279
I think there's just a lot of misunderstandings.
00:09:23.360 --> 00:09:26.799
And so that's really the the hope is just to correct those misunderstandings.
00:09:26.879 --> 00:09:28.799
And uh, I think it'll be a great class.
00:09:28.879 --> 00:09:29.519
I'm really excited.
00:09:29.600 --> 00:09:30.480
Bring your questions.
00:09:30.559 --> 00:09:39.919
Um, and this will be a these are classes, are opportunities for you to ask questions that you've maybe always wanted to ask, but never knew who to ask, or maybe didn't even feel really free to ask.
00:09:40.080 --> 00:09:42.639
Man, this is what we want to dig into um as a church.
00:09:42.720 --> 00:09:43.440
That's what it means.
00:09:43.519 --> 00:09:50.960
If you can't learn about who God is and what God has done and about the Bible at church, along with brothers and sisters in Christ, well, where are you gonna learn?
00:09:51.039 --> 00:09:53.200
Um, so we want to do this in community with one another.
00:09:53.279 --> 00:09:54.159
So I'm excited about it.
00:09:54.720 --> 00:09:55.039
Sounds good.
00:09:55.279 --> 00:09:58.000
I remember asking you about, are you sure you want to do this class?
00:09:58.240 --> 00:09:59.600
And uh it's just yeah, good.
00:09:59.679 --> 00:10:13.360
Even thinking about, yeah, well, we want to be able to help people think through things that they might find difficult or just misunderstand, helping people just understand things like that and and have a space where they can ask questions like that, which I think is really good.
00:10:13.600 --> 00:10:20.799
Yeah, I think one of the things that I've always wanted to do a little bit of is just I feel like Calvinism almost is like politics.
00:10:20.960 --> 00:10:25.279
Like it's just certain things you're like, oh, I don't think we're supposed to talk about that, or I don't think we can dig into that.
00:10:25.360 --> 00:10:26.639
And I was just like, why not?
00:10:26.879 --> 00:10:27.919
Like, why shouldn't we?
00:10:28.080 --> 00:10:34.720
Like, let's dig in as a church with people we know and trust and uh alongside brothers and sisters in Christ that we love.
00:10:34.799 --> 00:10:36.720
And so yeah, that's the idea behind this.
00:10:36.799 --> 00:10:43.360
It really isn't like uh I am, I mean, probably even with the title a little bit trying to get your interest, like for sure.
00:10:43.519 --> 00:10:44.240
A little punchy, yeah.
00:10:44.320 --> 00:10:45.200
Yeah, a little punchy.
00:10:45.279 --> 00:10:49.120
Um, but I think it's I think it's a really important thing to consider.
00:10:49.759 --> 00:10:51.679
Well, we're looking forward to that class, Jeff.
00:10:51.840 --> 00:10:58.000
The third class we have this fall in the the later fall, uh, is a class on what's called biblical theology.
00:10:58.080 --> 00:11:00.960
And I do believe the fun name for this class is cover to cover.
00:11:01.039 --> 00:11:01.600
Am I right, Braden?
00:11:01.840 --> 00:11:02.399
That's right.
00:11:02.559 --> 00:11:03.519
Um name.
00:11:03.679 --> 00:11:04.799
Braden, tell us a little bit about this.
00:11:05.039 --> 00:11:08.960
This is gonna be in MRI, Braden, the end of November and then even into December, right?
00:11:09.039 --> 00:11:09.919
Maybe most of December.
00:11:10.159 --> 00:11:11.200
Uh yeah, most of November.
00:11:11.279 --> 00:11:14.799
I think maybe just the last one will be the first day or two of December or something like that.
00:11:14.960 --> 00:11:18.080
So um, yeah, number, another class on Thursdays.
00:11:18.240 --> 00:11:19.360
Um, looking forward to that.
00:11:19.440 --> 00:11:22.080
It'll be kind of, yeah, looking at interrupt us for a second too.
00:11:22.159 --> 00:11:22.559
Just real quick.
00:11:22.720 --> 00:11:27.440
All these classes are gonna be at our Fields Church office, the garage, which we have here, which we're recording at here.
00:11:27.519 --> 00:11:29.919
Now, if you're wondering, also the recording studio, yeah.
00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:30.240
Uh-huh.
00:11:30.320 --> 00:11:31.759
It's a big functions in many ways.
00:11:31.919 --> 00:11:35.919
It's a multi-functional space we have here, which we're trying to make the most of.
00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:37.120
That's where these classes are gonna be at.
00:11:37.200 --> 00:11:40.559
There's more details, I'm sure you can find on our website of how to get here and those sorts of things.
00:11:40.639 --> 00:11:41.519
But that's where these classes will be at.
00:11:41.679 --> 00:11:44.080
And you can actually sign up for any and all of these right now.
00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:45.120
They're all on the website.
00:11:45.200 --> 00:11:45.919
So go do that.
00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:46.960
That's the shameless plug.
00:11:47.120 --> 00:11:51.679
I will say too, every once in a while, um, you know, we do have somewhat limited space.
00:11:51.759 --> 00:11:55.919
We move a lot of space at the garage, but we had a couple classes that you've gotten put on a wait list.
00:11:56.159 --> 00:11:57.519
I mean, they they've gotten that big.
00:11:57.679 --> 00:12:00.879
Um, so yeah, if you're gonna sign up, sign up quick and and dig in.
00:12:01.039 --> 00:12:02.240
You've earned it limited atonement.
00:12:02.320 --> 00:12:03.200
Is that you're referring to Jeff?
00:12:03.360 --> 00:12:03.600
That's right.
00:12:03.679 --> 00:12:04.480
It's no.
00:12:04.720 --> 00:12:06.720
I think it honestly, you'll add it.
00:12:06.799 --> 00:12:07.600
I regret saying that, right?
00:12:08.000 --> 00:12:10.080
It's it's the dad joke of theology.
00:12:10.480 --> 00:12:13.360
We're we're actually gonna talk about that even a little bit different.
00:12:13.519 --> 00:12:14.399
Oh man, oh, good.
00:12:14.559 --> 00:12:15.759
Particular redemption.
00:12:15.840 --> 00:12:17.120
Oh there we go.
00:12:17.360 --> 00:12:18.480
I'm so sorry, Braden.
00:12:18.639 --> 00:12:19.279
I cut you off.
00:12:19.519 --> 00:12:20.080
Oh, that's great.
00:12:20.240 --> 00:12:23.840
You were talking about your the the this is the third class of the of the semester.
00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:24.240
Yep.
00:12:24.480 --> 00:12:27.120
Biblical theology, kind of November into December.
00:12:27.360 --> 00:12:28.080
Tell us a little bit.
00:12:28.240 --> 00:12:32.799
So, first off, biblical theology is a word I was like, okay, I think a lot of us know those words.
00:12:32.879 --> 00:12:34.960
I know the word biblical, I know the word theology.
00:12:35.120 --> 00:12:39.440
Some people even use them uh when they use those words together, use biblical theology differently.
00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:43.120
Tell us a little about what do you mean when you say the word biblical theology?
00:12:43.200 --> 00:12:46.159
Um, and then what's this class going to then talk about because of that?
00:12:46.480 --> 00:12:56.159
Yeah, so I think I think normally the way that the term is used is coming to the Bible a little bit on its own terms, and then tracing theology through the Bible.
00:12:56.320 --> 00:13:05.039
So, so finding a theme or some sort of thing that the Bible is talking about, and then looking at it through and over the course of the storyline of scripture.
00:13:05.200 --> 00:13:08.720
Uh in comparison to a little bit of systematic theology.
00:13:08.799 --> 00:13:16.480
Obviously, they're not completely divorced from one another, but systematic is more like let's take a topic and pick it and then see where the Bible talks about that thing.
00:13:16.639 --> 00:13:18.240
So that's maybe the difference between them.
00:13:18.399 --> 00:13:26.000
So in the idea of cover to cover, biblical theology is in some ways tracing themes through the Bible, uh, helping us understand.
00:13:26.080 --> 00:13:28.240
In some ways, it helps put the Bible together, I think.
00:13:28.480 --> 00:13:42.000
And I think that's really helpful when we are reading our Bibles and we're trying to figure out what in the world is happening here in Numbers and what am I supposed to do with that today on my Wednesday, uh, as I just read this.
00:13:42.159 --> 00:13:49.279
Um, so I I think in some ways this helps us to be able to put the Bible together, to see themes, to think about Christ.
00:13:49.440 --> 00:14:22.080
00:14:22.159 --> 00:14:23.840
So that's what I'm excited to get to talk about.
00:14:23.919 --> 00:14:32.080
It's uh it's one thing that I uh love getting to share and help people with is how to read their Bibles, especially the parts that we're less inclined to read.
00:14:32.320 --> 00:14:35.120
Um so I'm excited that we can kind of do that together.
00:14:35.440 --> 00:14:44.240
I think sometimes when people think about biblical theology, a a helpful word is the story of the Bible, like really helping people to see this overarching story.
00:14:44.399 --> 00:14:49.279
You know, I think sometimes the Bible is 66 books, and it's helpful to know that and see that.
00:14:49.360 --> 00:15:01.360
And there's a lot of different uh authors uh who have written those different books, but we believe um that the scripture is has one author overall, and that is God Himself.
00:15:01.519 --> 00:15:07.039
And so and really scripture is one story, um, one message.
00:15:07.200 --> 00:15:08.399
There's one hero.
00:15:08.559 --> 00:15:10.480
And and so it's really an incredible thing.
00:15:10.639 --> 00:15:30.720
I mean, I think for many of us, probably all three of us sitting at this table, one of the things that has been most exciting and encouraging to us as we have grown in our understanding of scripture is to see how the Bible tells this wonder, wondrous true story of humanity and God and Christ and um this world and things like that.
00:15:30.879 --> 00:15:36.960
So yeah, and and it just even we've been in Isaiah and Revelation, a lot of biblical theology to have done there.
00:15:37.120 --> 00:15:44.480
Um, and so I think of you start thinking about maybe even just to put some flesh on a couple ideas, like the temple, you know, God's dwelling with us.
00:15:44.639 --> 00:15:52.639
You can trace that from Eden to the tabernacle, to the temple, to Jesus, to the church, to the new heavens, the new earth.
00:15:52.720 --> 00:15:57.600
Like, I mean, there's just some wondrous sorts of things that we can trace uh in scripture that's so cool.
00:15:57.679 --> 00:16:01.600
And you can do that with a lot of different topics and ideas.
00:16:01.840 --> 00:16:02.559
So yeah.
00:16:02.960 --> 00:16:06.960
Yeah, in part this is uh, though I haven't necessarily put this out there yet.
00:16:07.120 --> 00:16:13.360
I am thinking about doing a class at the beginning of the year of something like how to get through Leviticus.
00:16:14.000 --> 00:16:22.399
And essentially kind of piggybacking off of this idea a little bit, but more so in some books that are harder right at the beginning of maybe your reading plan.
00:16:22.480 --> 00:16:28.399
So maybe if you're thinking, man, next year, I'd love to read through the whole Bible trying to do that in 2027.
00:16:28.639 --> 00:16:32.320
We've got some help for you in in this class and maybe another one coming at the beginning of the year.
00:16:32.480 --> 00:16:43.600
And if you're one of those many people that I told we were gonna preach through Leviticus this fall and we're not doing that, then you can get into Braden's class and get a little help this semester and then also next semester.
00:16:44.399 --> 00:16:44.960
Very cool.
00:16:45.120 --> 00:16:54.320
Uh well, maybe maybe like a at a big picture level, not even necessarily these nitty-gritty classes, but maybe why in why in particular are we doing classes at all as a church?
00:16:54.399 --> 00:16:56.159
What's kind of our goal of doing them?
00:16:56.240 --> 00:17:01.679
Uh, why do we think that's gonna be helpful to our people, a good use of our time and resources to uh offer these classes?
00:17:01.759 --> 00:17:04.640
So, Bray and Jeff, why are we doing why are we doing these?
00:17:04.960 --> 00:17:12.559
Yeah, I mean, I I think it's another opportunity for us to uh especially think about a way that we can learn theology.
00:17:12.640 --> 00:17:20.160
Uh that maybe we uh don't always like on Sunday mornings, we do hope that as we preach, we're not just trying to only think about all these concepts.
00:17:20.319 --> 00:17:22.880
We really are trying to think about how do we live this, right?
00:17:22.960 --> 00:17:27.839
That and then growth groups in some ways also were trying to apply scripture to life and some of those things.
00:17:27.920 --> 00:17:36.079
So they're so this isn't maybe more focused than some other spaces, though again, none of them are individually for that one thing.
00:17:36.160 --> 00:17:53.680
00:17:53.759 --> 00:18:01.279
I think that's how we can learn from one another because maybe someone had a question about something that I've never thought of, but wow, I didn't know the answer to that at all when they asked that.
00:18:01.440 --> 00:18:03.200
Uh, and that might be a question, who knows?
00:18:03.279 --> 00:18:08.400
Maybe my coworker has, or maybe my neighbor has that I have a question, they have a question about God or about theology.
00:18:08.480 --> 00:18:13.279
And now I'm maybe more prepared to answer, to talk about that thing, to have thought through that.
00:18:13.440 --> 00:18:20.400
So um, I think a number of reasons, especially, yeah, learning and then doing that in community, I think is some of why we want to do these classes.
00:18:20.720 --> 00:18:30.160
Yeah, I've also often thought about it like, you know, it is, and I've kind of even hinted at this earlier, and I think you did too, but you know, Sunday mornings is a really unique gathering.
00:18:30.400 --> 00:18:32.720
It is our primary gathering as a church.
00:18:32.880 --> 00:18:43.599
And um, you know, obviously all three of us had have have had an opportunity, and I get a lot of opportunities to um preach and proclaim God's word to God's people uh on Sunday mornings.
00:18:43.759 --> 00:18:47.200
And that's a that's a unique and significant thing.
00:18:47.359 --> 00:18:54.079
Um, but there's a lot of things that I want to talk about on a Sunday morning that just wouldn't be right to add to a sermon.
00:18:54.240 --> 00:18:56.480
I don't think anybody's asking that I preach longer.
00:18:56.640 --> 00:19:00.079
Um, and so I think there's just so many questions that come up.
00:19:00.160 --> 00:19:03.839
And and in some ways you think, well, okay, well, small groups are awesome.
00:19:04.000 --> 00:19:06.880
So small groups aren't necessarily the best for education.
00:19:07.039 --> 00:19:09.920
That's not really what we're trying to do in a small group.
00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:17.440
Um, I think any of us who lead a small group, we wouldn't say necessarily that we've studied everything and we're teaching, we're more facilitating discussion.
00:19:17.519 --> 00:19:21.920
As Braden said, we're trying to apply God's word um as we live the life.
00:19:22.240 --> 00:19:37.039
Being in like a more formal education setting, and that doesn't mean straight lecture or anything like that, but just being in a giving the opportunities to really sit down and think through a topic biblically with a teacher, um, that sort of thing, that's really helpful.
00:19:37.200 --> 00:19:41.279
I mean, there's a reason why that's a much of what we have learned.
00:19:41.440 --> 00:19:45.119
Um, a good part of it, we would say, oh, we actually learned in a classroom with a teacher.
00:19:45.200 --> 00:19:49.279
Now we've learned a lot of stuff outside the classroom too, but the classroom's still really helpful.
00:19:49.359 --> 00:19:50.799
And I think that's true in the Christian life too.
00:19:50.880 --> 00:19:59.759
So these are just really good opportunities to be, as you said, really founded in key truths of the Christian life and of Christian theology.
00:20:00.640 --> 00:20:01.200
That's great.
00:20:01.359 --> 00:20:12.319
Uh, maybe a couple uh questions for people listening that they might have themselves of uh what if I'm have never been to a class before at the field church, because then we've a lot we've just the last year started offering classes.
00:20:12.480 --> 00:20:14.880
Um what should I expect when I come?
00:20:15.039 --> 00:20:18.319
I think some people might even be intimidated to think about coming to a class.
00:20:18.400 --> 00:20:19.759
Uh, so how should we think about that?
00:20:19.839 --> 00:20:22.720
Or um and you guys might even be different in the way you teach them too.
00:20:22.799 --> 00:20:23.920
Are they kind of more lectures?
00:20:24.000 --> 00:20:25.599
Are they gonna be more interactive?
00:20:25.759 --> 00:20:27.200
Do I have to do any homework for them?
00:20:27.359 --> 00:20:27.839
I don't know.
00:20:27.920 --> 00:20:29.519
That might be um something to think about.
00:20:29.599 --> 00:20:35.200
And then um, yeah, maybe most importantly, will there be any snacks at these at these classes?
00:20:35.680 --> 00:20:35.920
Brain.
00:20:36.400 --> 00:20:38.799
We probably don't even have a universal answer for most of those questions.
00:20:39.039 --> 00:20:46.559
However, I would say anyone who wants to, you know, grow and learn in their walk with Christ should come.
00:20:46.640 --> 00:20:48.880
So uh if you're a member of the Fields Church, you definitely should come.
00:20:48.960 --> 00:20:52.400
If you're uh coming just on Sundays, we'd love for you to come.
00:20:52.480 --> 00:20:53.279
You're welcome to come.
00:20:53.359 --> 00:20:56.559
We would love for you to even invite friends and have them come and join us.
00:20:56.640 --> 00:20:58.559
So anyone can come to these classes.
00:20:58.720 --> 00:21:04.160
Um, we do think that if I would really encourage if you're a member, uh, that you would come to one of the classes this fall.
00:21:04.480 --> 00:21:09.839
It'd be great if if we had our members going to maybe just one class every semester or so.
00:21:09.920 --> 00:21:15.279
Um, I think would be a really good goal for each one of us to be like, okay, I want to attend one of those classes.
00:21:15.359 --> 00:21:18.880
And even if you can't get four or four, but I'm gonna go to that one and go three of four.
00:21:18.960 --> 00:21:22.640
Like, I'm gonna make sure that's the main one I can get to and my schedule works out.
00:21:22.799 --> 00:21:24.079
Even go with my family, maybe.
00:21:24.160 --> 00:21:24.480
Yeah.
00:21:24.559 --> 00:21:26.880
Uh, all sorts of things like that would be really good.
00:21:27.039 --> 00:21:29.599
Um, sometimes there are snacks.
00:21:29.759 --> 00:21:32.559
Sometimes I've made coffee, sometimes there's not snacks.
00:21:32.640 --> 00:21:34.079
I don't know if there's always snacks.
00:21:34.160 --> 00:21:36.559
Uh, but you know, you should just come and you'll find out.
00:21:36.720 --> 00:21:38.640
Um, I don't think I've ever had snacks.
00:21:38.720 --> 00:21:40.000
I don't think I've ever had coffee.
00:21:40.240 --> 00:21:42.000
You just you're just coming straight for the teaching.
00:21:42.079 --> 00:21:43.279
If you're maybe you should come to my class.
00:21:43.440 --> 00:21:43.920
Yeah, that's good.
00:21:44.079 --> 00:21:46.559
There might be snacks at Braden's, probably not a Jeff.
00:21:46.799 --> 00:21:48.000
Probably not gonna be a mine.
00:21:48.079 --> 00:21:53.440
But I will say one of the encouraging things, I taught a class on eschatology, which is end times um last year.
00:21:53.680 --> 00:21:57.200
And it was we had students in that class.
00:21:57.359 --> 00:22:02.319
Um, we had very Mature senior adults in that class.
00:22:02.400 --> 00:22:05.440
Um, older Christians in that class.
00:22:05.599 --> 00:22:11.920
Um, we had guys in that class, we had girls in that class, we had all sorts of different ages, families, that sort of thing.
00:22:12.000 --> 00:22:13.119
That's something that's really cool too.
00:22:13.200 --> 00:22:24.079
Like, if you think about sometimes it's it is in when we talk about being like walking alongside other Christians, sometimes it's hard to do life with when you're in your 20s with a 70-year-old.
00:22:24.160 --> 00:22:25.519
Like that's sometimes just a little bit difficult.
00:22:25.680 --> 00:22:28.480
Different uh life stages, all that sort of thing.
00:22:28.640 --> 00:22:36.799
Classes are one of those opportunities that actually make a ton of sense for all different ages uh to be there and you can kind of dig in and really gain wisdom from each other.
00:22:36.880 --> 00:22:46.000
So that's one of my favorite parts about classes is that it it really is a diverse set of people from our church together kind of learning uh that I think is really helpful.
00:22:46.160 --> 00:22:53.839
And really, we try to teach our classes that no matter like how long you've been a Christian, how deep you are in these things, if you and I say that both ways.
00:22:54.000 --> 00:22:59.599
Like if you're a very new Christian, I am confident that uh you'll be able to understand and follow and get questions asked.
00:22:59.759 --> 00:23:01.519
Um, there's gonna be some things you don't understand.
00:23:01.599 --> 00:23:02.400
That's always the case.
00:23:02.559 --> 00:23:09.599
But even if you're been a Christian for a while, I think you will find each of these classes challenging and um new things to learn.
00:23:09.759 --> 00:23:16.720
I do think some of the classes, like I will often have very none of my homework is ever uh bur I hope not.
00:23:16.799 --> 00:23:19.279
It's not burdensome, it's more devotional.
00:23:19.440 --> 00:23:26.720
So we will I'll have somebody just be reading through this passage each day over the next week or think on this prayer, you know, things like that.
00:23:26.880 --> 00:23:30.799
So there'll be some minor things that you you can do.
00:23:30.960 --> 00:23:36.640
There's no, I've never uh done a test in my class, or there's no grades, uh, things like that.
00:23:36.720 --> 00:23:39.440
So they're really, I mean, I've really enjoyed teaching them.
00:23:39.599 --> 00:23:44.079
Um, and and I I feel like we've heard pretty good feedback from people uh last semester.
00:23:44.640 --> 00:23:56.319
Yeah, so even just to speak to a little bit of what the classes are like, there are gonna be obviously there's gonna be a good amount of teaching, lecture, that sort of thing, but there'll also be a good amount of like kind of breakout or opportunity for QA.
00:23:56.400 --> 00:23:57.680
Uh, some of that's gonna be involved.
00:23:57.759 --> 00:24:08.000
So you'll you'll be talking with people at your table about different things, probably at the beginning, or kind of thinking through an idea together or looking it up a passage or doing something along those sorts.
00:24:08.079 --> 00:24:13.759
So it's gonna be interactive so that you will have opportunity to get to know one another or even you know learn from one another.
00:24:13.839 --> 00:24:16.000
But then yeah, it will be a good amount of teaching as well.
00:24:16.079 --> 00:24:16.240
Yeah.
00:24:16.400 --> 00:24:26.160
Um, so yeah, and and then I think uh this this would help you uh kind of no matter who you are, uh whether you're newer to our church, newer Christian, uh, or been around for a while.
00:24:26.240 --> 00:24:27.759
We we think this would be really helpful for you.
00:24:27.839 --> 00:24:30.799
So yeah, maybe once one more thing, just on someone that's new.
00:24:30.880 --> 00:24:46.559
Um, I think sometimes it could be a little bit unnerving or um you'd be a little bit concerned, like, I don't know if I want to go into someone's house and meet with a small group and be a part of a group, you know, that sort of thing.
00:24:46.640 --> 00:24:51.359
That can be sometimes a little bit more difficult to think about, maybe just jumping into if you're a little bit newer to the church.
00:24:51.440 --> 00:24:56.160
And in some ways, we're like, yeah, we think it'd be better for you to get into the life of church before diving into a group.
00:24:56.559 --> 00:24:57.839
A class is great.
00:24:58.000 --> 00:25:11.599
You know, I mean, a class is a really great way to meet some people at the church and do so in an environment that isn't, I wouldn't say even if you're a little bit more introverted, things like that, it's not um, it's a pretty low bar um and it's a pretty easy step into some community.
00:25:11.759 --> 00:25:19.839
And I we both have pretty significant times before and after the class to just, you know, kind of dive into some relationships, talk some more fellowship.
00:25:21.359 --> 00:25:25.359
Well, if you're listening, hopefully you're encouraged to uh dive into one of these classes.
00:25:25.440 --> 00:25:28.079
Right now, going on is the worship class.
00:25:28.160 --> 00:25:32.880
And so um, yeah, there's more information on our church website as to uh how to come to these classes.
00:25:32.960 --> 00:25:34.559
We'd love for you to consider coming to them.
00:25:34.640 --> 00:25:52.079
And um, as someone who has sat in on uh your guys' teaching before of classes, uh, you guys do such a great job of I think uh what you guys talked about there of for people who don't know much, not making them feel like they are in the wrong place, and but also to spur on people who are uh experts in different fields too.
00:25:52.160 --> 00:25:57.279
So um, you guys have done such a good job in that, and I know the semester is gonna be a huge help and encouragement to our people in that.
00:25:57.440 --> 00:25:58.319
So thank you guys.
00:25:58.480 --> 00:26:00.240
We're looking forward to classes this fall.
00:26:00.400 --> 00:26:02.079
Any last notes before we sign off here?
00:26:02.319 --> 00:26:02.799
That's great.
00:26:02.880 --> 00:26:05.279
You can get registered on the website, and please do register.
00:26:05.359 --> 00:26:11.759
Oh, that does help us so we know that you're coming and also that there's space for you because we do want to make sure, as Jeff said.
00:26:12.160 --> 00:26:23.119
Yeah, I think a great thing to do would be right now, like just a very easy application, is just to go look at the classes and go, hey, I'm gonna I'm gonna try to go to one and I'm gonna try to grab a few friends to come with me.
00:26:23.200 --> 00:26:28.079
And and I think that would be a really I think you will find you'll be thankful for that you've done that.
00:26:28.160 --> 00:26:30.160
Um, and it will be an encouragement to your soul.
00:26:30.319 --> 00:26:30.480
Yep.
00:26:30.559 --> 00:26:36.319
Fieldschurch.co, go to the events page and then look for the foundation's classes, and there they are on there.
00:26:36.480 --> 00:26:39.119
All right, Jeff Braden, thank you guys for your time and thank you guys for listening.
00:26:39.359 --> 00:26:40.960
We are signing off for Fields Notes.
00:26:41.039 --> 00:26:41.839
We will see you.
00:26:41.920 --> 00:26:44.079
No, no, no, you will not see us, you will hear from us.
00:26:44.240 --> 00:26:45.440
Well, you'll see us hopefully on Sunday.
00:26:45.759 --> 00:26:46.319
See us in person.
00:26:46.400 --> 00:26:46.559
Yeah.
00:26:46.640 --> 00:26:47.440
I never know how to end it.
00:26:47.680 --> 00:26:49.200
But on the podcast, you will just hear from us.
00:26:49.440 --> 00:26:50.720
All right, I'm gonna press the done button.
00:26:50.799 --> 00:26:51.680
All right, signing off.
00:26:51.759 --> 00:26:52.640
Goodbye.
