Dzogchen—or the “Great Completion” as it is sometimes translated—is the absolute view in Vajrayana Buddhism. From the Dzogchen perspective, everything is already enlightened, and the whole of reality is a Buddha field. In this talk from the 2026 Discovering Dzogchen Youth Retreat at Padma Samye Ling, Lama Pema Dragpa reminds us that this view, which contradicts the perfectionism and seriousness of Western culture, approaches dharmic truths such as impermanence with levity and impartial kindness. Rather than forcing ourselves to 'be good' from the conditioned belief that we are intrinsically bad, Dragpa invites us to trust our intrinsic goodness, rest in the spacious and compassionate nature of mind, and develop our capacity to become a ‘field of kindness’ that includes even our adversaries.
