What is available in all the areas? How about our kick and also what's available in all areas now college football, We had a lot of games going on last night. We also had thirty two NFL teams in action, finishing off the long slog of NFL preseason. All that has taken place and we are officially underway now with today the start of the NFL season. We got news from Jerry Jones. Suddenly it appears Zeke Elliott may in fact not be playing for Week one. That's a bit of a pivot for Jerry Jones and the Cowboys in terms of what they expect. There will get you the audio from Jarra in a little bit, but I want to begin by running through several of the games that I watched last night that I imagine you guys many of you were watching as well. Uh. First of all, U c l a in year two of the Chip Kelly system does not look very good at all. This was an utter beat down put on by Cincinnati. In fact, if you were watching this game, Cincinnati should have won by three touchdowns or more. If you are a Bruins fan who didn't sleep very well last night, and you're already up early on the West coast listening to me. I do think things will get better for chip Kelly, but a six and six style season this year appears to me to be a likely outcome. Year three is when I think you'll really start being able to judge chip Kelly. But right now, not a reason for a lot of optimism there. Clemson gets the start against Georgia Tech and they win by thirty eight in a game that was never really very close. However, I would say the big takeaway from this game and a lot of you were not able to watch it because you don't have the A c C network. Com Cast didn't carry it, Cox didn't carry it, A T and T you Verse did not carry it, and many of you, even if they did carry it, did not have the tear of package that allowed you to watch the A C C network game. So what did you miss last night in Clemson's debut after winning a national championship, Well, what you missed was Trevor Lawrence was just okay. Clemson's got a lot of weapons. They were running the ball all over the place on Georgia Tech. But Trevor Lawrence one touchdown past two interceptions. Very average performance for him, and as the Heisman front runner, it's gonna take a lot better than that to keep up with the stats that I believe to a talking about LOA will be likely to post, as well as Jake from at Georgia, who I love as a potential dark horse Heisman contender. UH. In the Holy War, Utah wins for a ninth straight season over B y U. Huge win for Kyle Whittingham over his alma mater. That is a great rivalry if you have not spent any time paying attention to it because you just haven't really ever dialed in. Well. Utah is on an unbelievable run and Kyle Whittingham has now won nine games in a row against his alma mater at B y U. So those are the big takeaways. Texas A and M also gotta win over Texas State. Uh, not that exciting of a game. And UH there were a few other contest Minnesota survived. I believe we make sure I don't miss any of the Thursday night opening kickoff games. UH. Minnesota survived in what was a a ugly game for them relatively speaking, UH, late night game. A lot of these games ended late, Arizona State gets to win, Minnesota hung on to beat South Dakota State one. Uh. I just want to make sure I don't miss any major programs that were playing last night. And uh that is basically, uh what's going on? Western Kentucky tough home lost to Central Arkansas UM and uh, let's see, that's pretty much it. Nothing else of of major magnitude. Yukon, by the way, their football program in a rough spot now that they are leaving the American Athletic Conference. Yukon one four to twenty one over Wagner. So I don't know exactly a lot about Wagner football, but I do know that if you're a Yukon and you have to have a nail bier against Wagner, things are probably not going perfect. But you know what did go perfect? Your boy went three and oh last night, running my college football total to five and oh. Incredible start of the season here. It's gonna really rattle everybody on lock it in that I have started off five and oh on the college football picks. I hope you listened to the show last night. I gave you a Cincinnati minus ten two and a half. I gave you the under in Utah b y U, and I gave you the Clemson cover. So we went three and oh last night, five and oh to start the season. Those were my big takeaways from the Universe of college football starting on a Thursday night. Now we also had more Ezekiel Elliott news. Let me get the official quotes from Jerry Jones, where after all this talk about how, hey, we expect Zeke to be back, we expect Zeke to be there for a week one, things have markedly shifted in the last couple of days and after the Dallas Cowboys final preseason game. Here is what Jerry Jones had to say about Ezekiel Elliott operating about my entire expectation we put him together as down would anticipate back down and not having the union training. They're just gonna miss games. I just wanted to accept that, so Jerry Jones, I just accept that he's gonna miss games. And uh. Ezekiel Elliott reportedly has turned down an offer that would have made him the second highest paid running back of all time, and he's still got two years left on his deal and he's been paid, or his schedule to be paid twenty five million dollars compared to two point five million dollars for UH Dak Prescott. Dak Prescott's deal is up at the end of this year. We know that the deal is up at the end of this year for Mary Cooper as well. Jalen Smith just got a deal, and it appears that Ezekiel Elliott, even though he has two years left on his deal, is not actually likely now according to Jerry Jones. And again this could just be negotiation posturing. UH is not likely according to Jerry Jones, who speaks to the media, by the way, more than any owner ever in the history of pro sports that I can imagine, maybe Mark Cuban in the n b A, but he talks to the media. Jerry Jones does more than anybody. Now he's also the GM of the Dallas Cowboys. But this is a story that matters if you've been betting the Dallas Cowboys, if you are a fantasy football player and you have drafted Ezekiel Elliott, fingers crossed for you, guys as to win exactly as Ekiel Elliot is going to be back. But Jerry Jones now saying for the first time that he doesn't expect him back for the start of the season, and those are all of the major stories that I would say are percolating and coming out of the NFL preseason ending and college football beginning on Thursday night. Danny G. Anything else out there that you think I've missed or that you took note of on the opening night of college football or the final night of the NFL preseason, Well, you covered the main games pretty well. Me like a lot of people, I was flipping around my TV guy trying to find the Clemson game, could not find it. Frustrated. What cable package do you have? I have Charter Slash Spectrum, and they supposedly picked it up, but I think they only picked it up if you are in the A, c C. States, So if you're in the West coast, I think you have to pay a premium price in order to be able to see that game. Yeah, that was frustrating. Um So I was watching highlights of that game and I kept track of that on my computer. I did watch you c l A Cincinnati, and a lot of U c l A fans were frustrated because their star running back Joshua Kelly was just standing there on the sideline ready to go in I know he had been dealing with an injury, but I had heard he was gonna play. That felt like a suspension. There was a right interview with Chip Kelly where he said, like, you know, with Molly McGrath, like, I'm not really sure about whether or not he's gonna play. We didn't have enough snaps to get him. It felt like a suspension to me. Didn't feel like a suspension to you, Like an unannounced suspension. Yeah, it was very strange. He had his helmet on and he was like ready to get into the game. U c l A made two plays, by the way on offense the entire game. They were awful. They hit a little pass over the middle where the the guy was not covered and he went for like seventy yards for a touchdown. And then they hit like a fifty yard bomb that led to their second touchdown. Other than those, this was really difficult to watch if you are a u c l A fan. Yeah, Once that game got sloppy, U c l A started to look like last year's U c l A team. I switched over to the last Raiders preseason game against the Seahawks in Seattle. The backups to the backups backups were playing, which made that even made Gino Smith look good on the field. Yeah, I felt the same way, like I flipped it over during the U C l A Cincinnati game, which was the primary game I was watching early, and I didn't have the A c C network either, So I'm watching Clemson highlights and whatnot. A lot of people musn't have been doing that same thing, watching the highlights on the computer, watching e t and run all over the field. And then I did tune into Utah b y U. So I'm a little punch drunk because that whole thing I did, even to the weather delay. So I'm watching Scott Van Pelt during the weather delay, and I'm like, man, I gotta get a little bit asleep. But it was a lot of fun to watch Utah running back Zach Moss. He took over in the second half two and twenty pounds. That dude is a beast running the ball. Yeah. I was not awake for that one. But in the middle of the night, as anybody who knows who has parents, one of my kids started had nightmares and started screaming out, and so I got that's terrible, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know that feeling or berta. So I got up. I been up since two thirty. Uh my time. I just went ahead. I mean, like when you get up at four thirty and you know, like your kids screams out of two thirty and you wake up and you're trying to calm them down or whatever, and then you're like, I mean, I'm just laying there in bed for a while. Then I'm like, screw it, I might as well go ahead and get up and start to start preparing for the day. Um. So, anyway, I didn't sleep very much, but I kind of wish I had stayed up and watched ut Utah b y U at least, because I'd rather have stayed up and uh and be tired because I watched a game than then now be tired because your kid was screaming out last night having nightmares. Um. But what I was gonna say about the about the flipping around and watching different games was the same thing for me on the Titans and then the Bears preseason game, which was what I got locally. I flipped over. Both teams were starting their third string quarterback, which just further confirms to me the absurdity of four NFL preseason weeks when the teams themselves don't even put their their starters or their backups in by the time you get to the final preseason game, and most teams, it seems at every year, are continuing to diminish the number of actual snaps that their starters get in the game for fear of injury and to try and make sure that the team is as healthy as it can be for the start of the season. So everybody pretty much who was playing last night, good for them. You may be playing for a practice squad spot or playing to put some film out there, and I hope that you can have a future in the NFL. But most of the guys, almost all of them playing last night, will not actually be on the fifty three man roster as the cuts begin. What about you, dub Anything that stood out to you from the night opening night at college football or the final preseason games. Yeah, a couple of things that you've already kind of mentioned. The U c l A quarterback does all have a great game. I mean, he fumbled it on his own basically twice inside the red zone, so there were some points that were left on the field. But uh, I think by the way, Cincinnati played very well. They could have put that game away too, because they fumbled it. They threw a pick that almost got returned for a touchdown that in the first half, they fumbled it inside the uh and and then they obviously got stopped on fourth down missed his chip shot field goal. Um, they left a lot of points on the table. I thought this game should have been put away early by them. Yeah, no doubt. Neither team was, you know, particularly impressive and just equally when Danny g said that Moss kid from Utah man he has fun to watch he uh, I don't think there was one time where the first defender that touched and brought him down. He was like a bowling ball back there, just running all over all over everybody in the second half especially. That was a big win for the PAC twelve because the PAC twelve started off the season with the loss to Hawaii and then with the loss to Cincinnati, and uh my guy Brett McMurphy tweeted out this stat which which was pretty unbelievable, and I retweeted it, but I think it kind of puts into perspective how far down the flow chart the PAC twelve has become. Um. And let me find it and uh, and I'll share it with you because it's pretty staggering. The Pac twelve has now lost the last five games it played against the American Athletic Conference and the last five games it played against Mountain West teams. Uh. That's a pretty unbelievable statistic for a Power five conference to have lost five straight games to the American Athletics Conference and five straight games to Mountain West teams. That makes you wonder on some level whether the Pack twelve should even be considered a major conference in uh in college football right now? Eddie Garcia, what did you note? Yeah, again kind of hitting on some of the same things you guys talked about, but the absolute ineptus and ineptness of u c l A, especially offensively. I think we all were in agreement that the Chip Kelly Higher was a great higher. We're all very enthusiastic about it. And I don't know how you couldn't watch that performance and and think this is a poorly coached team. And U c l A has made obviously a huge financial investment in chip Kelly and so far, uh, they're not getting anything out of that. Yeah, And what you would be a little bit concerned about I think if you're a U c. L A fan. Again, it's year two and they looked worse against Cincinnati this year than they did last year. But also, he's not recruiting at a really high level, and he never really recruited at a high level at Oregon either, And a part of me wonders whether the offensive system that Chip Kelly brought to bear at Oregon is maybe caught up with a little bit by the rest of college football in a way that it wasn't when he was kind of running rough shot over everybody in Eugene. We'll see, because I think by year three and as this year progresses, we'll see if there's growth. But the thing that would trouble me is there are a lot of penalties in that game last night, and you see l A just did not seem to have in any way a cohesive offensive game plan. Again, they hit a couple of big plays in the passing game, but their quarterback had absolutely no accuracy, very limited amount of touch. He did not look like a very solid player. And uh and and I don't know. I mean, it's just hard to have much optimism. I think if you're a U c l A fan coming out of that performance break back Bob Toledo maybe, uh, I was a big fan of uh late nineties are um but Terry Donohue I was watching. Wasn't it Terry Donohue who was their coach in the in the late nineties? To I was watching for some reason, I was remembering remember in the late nineties when J. J. Stokes was dominating the U c l A back in the day. Um, I just I was for some reason watching that game. I think they had a wide receiver who reminded me a little bit of J. J. Stokes on their team. Now here's a question for you, clear a big football fan. Who's the first number one team in the BCS ever, the very in the in the BCS rankings, or or at the end of the year, the first rankings ever? Who was number one? Um? Is it U c l A. I wouldn't have I wouldn't have gotten that if we hadn't been talking about Yeah, that was the year they lost in Miami. Wasn't it mcdown? That's right? They had the UH oh. Yeah, they rescheduled that game and James ran all over him for yards. Yeah, and that was a big upset. That was kind of the coming coming out party for for butch Uh Davis and the fact that he had rebuilt the Miami Hurricane football roster, because that was the prelude to him going out and setting the table for Larry Coker for those two thousand and one and two thousand two teams. Uh that that Frankly, we're about as good as any we've seen in in the last forty years of college football. All Right, when we come back, my guy Lance Taylor is gonna join us. Auburn's got the biggest game of the weekend in college football against Oregon, major signature game for the PAC twelve, huge game for Gus Miles on lt is down in the state of Alabama. We'll see what we think he believes about that game and will also drive dive into his favorite gambling picks as we head into the official start of the college football season. All that more, I am Clay Travis, appreciate you spending your Thursday morning with us. Be sure to catch live editions about kick the Coverage with Clay Travis week days at six am Eastern three am Pacific. Let me go ahead and bring in Lance Taylor at the Lance Taylor Jocks down in Birmingham, LT. I know you watched at to the games last night as well. First of all, how late did you stay up watching? Did you stay up for Utah w y U? I made it till halftime, and I was I was kicking myself because I really really wanted to push through. And I'm glad because of the lightning delay in the second half that I did not How long was the lightning delay Because if I had the under in this game, and I had it for a three I hit a three game parlay on Thursday night, So if I had been up, I fell asleep. But if I had been up waiting on that one and the lightning delay had happened and I had gotten afraid that they were just going to call the game, I would have been like, oh my god, are you killing Are you kidding me? Right? Um, So I'm surprised they came back because it was like, what like there was only what like ten minutes left in the game. I think nine one left in the fourth quarter. They suspended play almost an hour, so I think local time maybe two am is when it got over tottle time for us. Yeah, that is that is absolutely brutal. So what did you think, What lessons could we take away? Did we learn anything from any of the games that took place last night? Yeah, I think a couple of things. I mean, I think Utah that was a scary spot for them. And you know, going into the season, I thought Utah would win the Pack twelve. I thought they were attended to maybe even eleven and one. When you look at the schedule, the only game they're gonna underdogs and will be at Washington, And I thought it was a Turkey game. You know, they had won eight consecutive Holy Wars, and I knew Zack Molls is the real deal, and with the healthy Tyler Huntley, with that that defensive line, they were gonna be a tough out. But I thought Kalani Saitaki's B y U squad would play with them. Last night, it was on the wrong side that number went down to five. I back to B y U. I thought it would be a one possession game and two pick sixes and Zack Moss just carving up that defense. Utah looks to beat the real deal. Another team out of the Pack twelve. I think we can take away that, Chip Kelly, this experiment is not gonna work. And I really believe that Dorrian Robinson Thompson would be better. Dorrian Thompson Robinson would be better in year two because their offense played even on the three and nine campaign, probably played their best football in November last year. At two eighteen total yards. Central Florida one ran more plays in the firs staff last night against FAM. You then U C l A did the entire game against Cincinnati last and only sixty two plays four turnovers. U's offense was brutal. Yeah, and not only that. I mean you're talking about the total yardage. They had two plays really you know, they hit two big pass plays and one of them was just a total busted coverage. The other one wasn't a great throws a nice catch by the receiver. But you take those plays away, and I mean it wasn't as if you see l A did anything. I mean, they had no consistency, no rhythm. I know it's only year two for Chip Kelly, but he's not recruiting at a very high level, and they're playing the same team that they played last year, and Cincinnati has graduated and lost a decent amount of talent, and the Bearcats looked like they were creating more gap between themselves and U. C. L A As opposed to less. You know, you are a Tennessee guy and you remember and how it wore on Tennessee fans that Butch Jones would always preach for a young team. You know this is and he would always throw out numbers. This is the youngest team to ever fly at this time. I mean, it's just ridic kills stuff. We heard it after the game last night from Chip Kelly. He said, you know, we've got eighty seven freshman and sophomores. Um. You know, there's a lot of guys their first time on a plane. You know, if I'm paying you that type of money and you're in your second year, elite coaches in year to make the jump, and this is a quarterback that's been in your system. In the bottom line, is your three and two or three and ten now in your second year. I mean, he's already got more losses than he had in four years at Oregon. This is a problem and it doesn't look to be getting any better. What about Clemson? Did we learn anything about Clemson in terms of what we saw from Trevor Lawrence? Did you. First of all, do you even have the ability to it? You've got direct TV, right, so you were able to watch this game. You know, it's weird. I do have direct TV and it's on channel six twelve, but I don't have it for whatever reason, your normal package even in Birmingham. And by the way, I hate direct TV. This is like a long running dispute with us. The only reason I have it, obviously is Sunday Ticket being a rampson. I've got to have it, like they hold me hostage because there's no other way to actually watch from the Rams and Sunday Ticket without direct TV. So unfortunately, yeah, I'm I'm part of that experiment. But you know, I was doing a function for the station last night for bud Light, so we were out on the road and so I was able to watch it at the bar I was at. And then I got home and I flipped over to six twelve and I didn't have it. So I've got to figure something out. But anyway, watching in the first half, I thought Trevor Lawrence, I thought he looked a little shaky. I mean, he had the one that should have been a pick six. He threw another one right before the half that should have been picked off. He was thirteen or twenty three. Uh. E t N is the guy that really jumped out. You know. He was kind of under the radar as a a really one of the best running backs in college football last year because everybody was talking about Lawrence and these receivers and that defensive front. But E. T N was the guy that shined last night. And Georgia Tech is gonna be a messy entire year. How about the A C C Networks. I would call it a failure at launch because you just mentioned you've got direct TV and you weren't able to watch it. Danny g my producer, has got Spectrum and he wasn't able to watch it. They announced, first of all, they're not on competent and for the record, but one of my clients texted me last night he's got Charter, and he asked me, how do I find it on Charter? He ultimately didn't have it on Charter, right So, I mean, they announced that they were on a lot of different cable and satellite systems, and I think there are a lot of people listening to us right now who say, wait a minute, I was supposed to have it, and I wasn't able to find it because it's not on the normal tier of channels, even in the places where they did at it. But they don't have it on Comcast, which is what I've got here in my house. They don't have it on Cox, they don't have it on a T and TU Verse and so, and it's part of the you know, different packages like the Sports tier package on a lot of these other channels. That's not good for the A c C I mean to have, and it's only gonna get worse because if you don't have it by the start of this game, right, which is the best game that the a c C Network has got on for a while, because at least they've got Clemson on. I don't see this as a very successful launch at all. Yeah, I agree, you know, it's one of the big things Larry Scott in the Facts twelve. I mean, it's a complete joke. And you know me, you know, being a US SEE guy, you know I have to find ways to watch them because you can't get Packed twelve network on direct TV and you look at the a CEC network tomorrow. I mean, not that we have a great slate of games to intriguing games. Virginia and Pittsburgh and Virginia Second Boston College are both on the a CEC network, So you know, I think there's a way that I can actually order it because obviously it is available channel six twelve. I'm just gonna have to pay extra, you know, in my direct TV bill right now is sadly. I mean, I don't even want to tell you how how much do you pay direct TV every Do you have a lot of receivers? I've got sadly four team receivers, so like you're basically running a sports bar in your house. Yeah. And and the funny thing is when I call to have these disputes, um, A lot of these people that you talked to, they don't, um, they don't understand like what is going on. I mean, I don't even think they know the ins and outs of direct TV. But then they tell me, hey, I need you to go to this one box and cut it on or off. And I'm like, I don't even think when you're direct TV, when when your service guy comes out, he doesn't know how to do it with that set. I pay way too much because I think they jam up for seven bucks a box. So you know, I'm paying over a hundred dollars just in boxes. So is it less or more or less than four dollars a month? It's right at it. That's a great prices, right. Yeah, you're paying five grand a year for for satellite. It's pathetic, but you know for what we do. Um, you know, I guess you know you gotta have it. And now I'm gonna be paying more because I got at the a CC network. Um. So I I haven't prompted you on this, so I'm nervous. Well, so let's let's go back to uh to the Zeke's story. First, Jerry Jones coming out I don't know if you saw this late last night after the Cowboys final preseason game, and now says he doesn't think Ezekiel Elliott is going to be with the Cowboys for a week one. How big of a story is this? Well, you know, I don't want to say it's predictable, um, but you know the way this thing was trending, I just I'm not shocked. Well, you know, typically these things do get done. I mean, the good news for the Cowboys is you open with the Giants and you've got the Redskins and you got the Dolphins, I mean even without Zeke. I mean, you know, this is a team that should be able to get to three and oh, you know your problem becomes after that when you've gotta go to New Orleans, you had Green Bay, and you gotta go to the Jets and then the Eagles and you don't have him for those games. You know, that could be an old and fourth stretch. I still think this thing will get taken care of. And maybe this is this could just be posturing on both sides. Do you think that Ezekiel Elliott, if he's not playing Week one, will be rooting for the Cowboys to lose? Secretly, I always wonder things like this, you know, just like Josh Rosen came out and said, sooner or later, it's gonna be my team after Fitzpatrick gets named the starter, and you just wonder if he's he's pulling for Fitzpatrick to throw a couple of pixels down, that he wants Fitzpatrick to be awful. In fact, I think he probably wants Fitzpatrick to get hurt. Um. I mean, here's here's the fact about Zeke. I mean, there is no chance he wants Tony Poler to go out there and corvet up. He just does. I mean what you know, I doubt he wants the Cowboys to lose. He wants the Cowboys to win ten seven and Pylard to rush for twenty two yards. Yeah, that's what he wants, all right. I don't know if you saw this, but I woke up early this morning because one of my kids was having a nightmare and so I and I was immediately I wanted to see what happened in the Utah B y U game because I had bet on it, and obviously I was hoping the under was gonna hit, and it did. And I went to the ESPN app, which is my default, like go check scores app. And you were watching games last night, so you probably saw this on a ticker. Their lead story on the night that college football begins and that the NFL preseason ends is a guy that I've never heard of before announcing yeah that he's bisexual. Now, this not only is the lead story on ESPN with all this football stories going on, US opens going on, you know, Pennett races in baseball, whatever you want to argue, should be a top sports story, and last night it was on the ticker at the bottom of the screen as breaking news. This guy that I've never heard of before is announced that he's bisexual. Am I crazy? Or is this a totally made up story? It's got to be. I don't understand it, and I don't know what you're going for here. Does your die hard sports fan want to want to you know, is this like one of the stories they want to consume. I mean, we're much more interested in about what is going on in the field. I mean college football just kicked off literally the lead story and I'm not joking about this right now. Literally it would be a better lead story play that we have an NFL veteran that has come out and said he's a bisexual. By the way, not on a roster right now, and is maybe one of never never wanted to y Russell around the three thousand best NFL football player right, three thousand best, never heard of him, don't know anything about him. And we just had college football kickoff. Lots of storylines that you could follow, Like you said, Trevor Lawrence wasn't that good. He's the Heisman favorite. But you ask this on the front if this was the top story fits at Alabama has now been favored in one hundred and twenty six of their last one seven games, including fifty five straight where they've been double digits and forty four of those fifty five. To me, that's a better, better lead story. Ezekiel Elliott maybe not playing for the Dallas Cowboys Week one is the one, like in terms of just what sports fans are going to click on, like I see a story like that, and and and the breaking news like I was, like I saw it, and I think there's a lot of people right now who were watching the games last night and feel the exact same way as I do and as you do, and they're afraid to even say anything because they're like, I don't want to get labeled intolerance. I'm like, I don't care who you sleep with, right, Like, if you are consenting adult and another consenting adult wants to sleep with you, knock yourself out. But the idea that a player that none of us have ever heard of before announcing that he is bisexual is the lead story on the day that college football begins and that the NFL preseason ends is like, I feel like I'm getting pranked, Like is this the real world? Well, and even if it was June in July, I don't care. And you know, like their second or third top story is Carly Lloyd and that is the most ridiculous thing on the Like, there is a zero percent chance that she can become an NFL kicker. Zero, Like I don't think like p J. Fleck in Minnesota, she could not kick consistently for them. There's zero chance. Yeah, And what's funny about this is people are like, oh, you're you're not You're being sexist for that opinion. I'm like, wait a minute. She has played soccer for her entire life. Right, she's a good women's soccer player. There is a zero percent chance that she could play on any men's pro soccer team in America. Right, she's not good enough. She spent her entire life training to be the best soccer player that she can be, and she's not good enough to play on a men's pro soccer team, probably not most good men's college teams. Okay, so all of that is true. Yet you think at thirty seven or thirty eight years old, she's suddenly going to become the best one of the thirty two best NFL field goal kickers in the entire world, Like better just laughably absurd better chance of winning the power Ball. And people talk about she's used to performing under pressure, it's a different type of pressure. It's John Smaltz going from being one of the best starting pitchers and closers in Major League Baseball history to try and to play on the PGA Tour. He's a really good golfer, But once you get out there to try to try to qualify for the US Open, it's a different type of pressure and there is zero shot. I agree with you a thousand percent. Also, can you imagine if she were on the field five ft seven a hundred and forty pounds. I mean that Martine Grammatica, by the way, you have a fire drill. Yeah, Martin Grammatica was five eight one seventy. If she got a field goal blocked and was trying to pick up the football, she would get broken in half. I'm not even I'm not even like trying to be like a facetious here. I think someone might break her in half, Like, I mean, this is one of the most and then what do you say, like, well, I mean, like it's it's insane, one of the I think Keenan Allen said it would be like when uh Simba got lost in the stamp stampede in Lion King, which was actually a really funny analogy, but she would be done for Well, it's not gonna happen, so yeah, but I just think, but but again, it is their their third lead story right now? Yeah, right, all right? Good stuff LT at the Lance Tabor By the way, what do you think is gonna happen quickly with Auburn? Where are you going with Auburn Oregon? Yeah, it's one of the more difficult games on the board, But I think Auburn's defensive front might be a little much as good as this organ offensive line is getting billed justin Herbert a ton of experience. I think he needs a more consistent year this year. But I think bo Nix is gonna be good. Um. I don't know how good amor will be overall because of that schedule, but Eileen Auburn right now, good stuff is always Lance Taylor at the Lance Taylor Jocks in Birmingham. We come back, We'll dive back into college football in the NFL. This is OutKick on Fox Sports Radio. This is Outkicked the coverage with Clay Travis. Welcome back, I I go outkicks studios. Let me bring in the crew again last night? All right, So let's start here. Does anybody think that the that it's a the lead story on ESPN this morning in the wake of college football starting in the NFL preseason ending, should be a guy that none of us have ever heard of announcing that he's bisexual. And on top of that, does anybody think that it should be a breaking news story on the Crawler during the game. There had to be a lot of people out there watching this games on college football with their young kids, five six, seven year olds and people being like, Dad, what's or Mom? What's bisexual? Mean? Why is it a big story that this guy is bisexual? I mean, I I just I don't look. I am pro gay marriage, right, you want to be in love with somebody, you want to get married to him, more power to you. I'm totally fine with that. But why is it a story that the three thousand best NFL football player is bisexual? I mean, legitimately, why is that a sports story? Maybe it's a human interest story when people run it, maybe what and and so why is it a story? One? Two? Can anyone justify it being the lead story on ESPN for anything other than them go an all in on Woke Center and them hoping that some player or coach is gonna say something because you know, all the media is now gonna go ask questions and if some player coach says something, so they can have a huge like, oh, we're so intolerant. I think in society today people just don't care. If you're good enough to play in the NFL, then I don't think people care who you sleep with. I don't think they care anything about your performance other than your performance on the football field. Like the whole Colin Kaepernick thing. I said, you know what, if Aaron Rodgers had taken a knee during the national anthem to support ISIS, I think he still would have a job. People be like, you know what, not a big fan of Isis, But Aaron Rodgers really damn good at football. And obviously that's hyperbolic and intentionally absurd, but that's how good Aaron Rodgers is at football that nobody would care that much about his politics. But if you're gonna go all in on politics like Colin Kaepernick did, then you have to be really good. Let's open up phone lines on this I'm actually curious. Am I totally crazy on this? Eight seven seven nine, six three six nine, Danny G. When you were watching Cincinnati and u C l A and in between all the different score updates, they kept saying, breaking news, this player you've never heard of is bisexual? Were you not? Why in the world is this on the ticker? Yeah, it was a little odd to see that scrolling at the bottom of the screen, and I wondered first. I was like, who, Who's no idea who this guy? He's a free agent right now. I had to look him up, former Cowboy and Buck defensive end. But yeah, you're right, who cares? This is not the nineties. I think it's a compliment to the entire world that we don't care anymore at all. I mean, am I crazy on this? Dub? I mean you were watching the games when you saw that on breaking news? Like I felt like I was taking crazy pills. Yeah. I watched a lot of NFL football, okay, like all day on Sunday, and I have never heard of this guy in my life. And I totally agree with you. I mean, most people just don't are They're cool with it, They're like, all right, cool, next story I mean, we have so many good stories right now. We got Zeke, we got Clemson the defending champions, back in action, big rivalry game, b y u utah. I mean, the NFL kicks off in less than a week, and then they decided to have this as the lead story when I don't think many people even care about it. It's because it's you know, cool, awesome, do what you want, and and it's it's great for you to, you know, feel comfortable announcing that. But I mean, there's it's not really a sports story at all. I mean, Eddie, you're a sports update guy. Is this crazy that this was a ticker update? Yeah? I have to echo exactly what you guys said. I saw it as well, and I thought number one who and number two who cares? That's exactly what I thought when I saw that. Uh, Roberto, you on board the same exactive results. Yeah, thoughts All right, open foe lines. You're welcome to disagree. Eight seven seven six three six nine. I'm Clay Travis. This is out kick our one in the books, rolling to two, our two NFL preseason football and college Let's roll. This is outkicked the coverage with plate Traffics College Football opening. If you're just waking up with US Clemson dominant like we thought they would be, but Trevor Lawrence not that impressive, couple of interceptions, only one touchdown. Clemson's gonna be seventeen point favorites or more in every game according to my guy Todd Furman, who I do lock it in with, So they're gonna be prohibitive favorites in a lot of games. Last night they were over a thirty five point favorite. Managed to cover in that one, by the way, and also hit in all three of the games that I gave you out less yesterday, so hopefully you have managed to play those. You see l A in year two of Chip Kelly awful, awful performance against Cincinnati. Big win for the Bearcats, but you see l A was really really bad. Utah wins the Holy War for a ninth straight year. I picked you taught to win the PAC twelve South, and I feel better about that pick based on how they looked, even though I had to go to bed before it was over because it was on late, as many of the West Coast Pack twelve games are. Fortunately if you're a Pack twelve fan, because the PAC twelve, has lost its last five games out of conference to the American Athletic Conference, in its last five games to the Mountain West Conference as well. Not ideal. There big takeaways from those games. And then you had the Central Florida go ahead and run rough shot over Florida A and m Zeke potentially not going to be in for the Cowboys. On Week one, DeMarcus Cousins in NBA news which nobody's talking about. This is crazy. DeMarcus Cousins arrest warrant out because he said he was gonna shoot his baby mama in the head. The NBA and the Lakers have still done nothing. Bringing the crew here. Can you imagin pagine the reaction if an NFL team had a player on audio threatening to shoot his baby mama in the head and there was an arrest warrant out for him and the NFL had done nothing at all at all. How much people would be outraged by this. And yet it's like the NBA gets as a pass. The Lakers haven't done anything. The NBA hasn't done anything in the NFL. If you got charged with a crime like DeMarcus Cousins now has been for threatening on audio that everybody could share to shoot your baby mama in the head. There's no way on earth that people would be like, no big deal. Everybody agree with me on that that this is crazy. If you compare the way that every NFL misbehavior story is covered compared to how the n b A is having this story covered, there's not equal treatment here. No, it's just like how performance enhancing drugs are accepted in the NFL, whereas in baseball it's a black mark on your stay forever. I mean, it's totally different treatment, right, I mean, why why do you think it is? Why is the totally different treatment in play here? I think yesterday, who was our guest who said it's because he thinks the NBA media, the NBA press that maybe that's I think I think that. I think there's a big part of it is that that the NBA media is more of a fan media than the NFL media. Like the NFL media loves to rake the NFL over the cold pitch. There's anything that happens, oh, Roger Goodell, it's unacceptable. Oh my god, look at what's going on in the NFL, And whenever something happens in the NBA, that's the equivalent. It's crickets. It's like nobody wants to say anything negative at all about it in the remote degree. So all of those stories are out there. Some people got mad at me because I gave five thousand dollars to charity, because I predicted ten years ago almost that DeMarcus Cousins get arrested one day, and when he didn't in five years, I gave five thousand dollars in charity to his charity. Now I think I should get my five thousand dollars back and be able to give it to another charitable organization. It wasn't five years, though, so you only get a percentage. Yeah, I said he would get arrested within five years, and he got arrested in eight years and change or nine years. Instead should have gone double or nothing. But because I was wrong, I gave five thousand dollars to his charity. And now I think you should have to return the charity money. I should get to give it to to somebody else. You should have to make good on my charity money. Because I was right. It's a little bit late. Anybody have a legitimate theory why the NBA gets a pass on this and the NFL gets raked over the coals. Maybe because the NFL stereotypically is you know, people think it's uh, you know, has nothing but a violent men play the NFL. It's a violent game, and it's more popular than the populate. The popularity is a potential argument. I think what it is in terms of the way the media covers it is I think the media has decided that the NBA is the would quote woke league and the NFL is the bad league, and so the media is more left leaning, and so they go after the NFL because it's more masculine, because it's more you know, hyper masculine, and there's something called toxic masculinity. Whatever that is, is their toxic femininity. I guess there must be. If there's toxic masculinity, I think they go after football because it's hyper masculine and because it's seen as more conservative than the woke NBA. I think that factors in a big way. We got any calls, We've got people who want to weigh in on on this. On the breaking news story about an NFL player being bisexual, I think, dub we have callers who want to weigh in. Yeah, we do let's start things off with Charlie and Dayton. Charlie, what do you think, man, I gotta apologize. I don't know if you guys change their own systems or what. But I haven't heard anything like um hold on policy for just our phones haven't worked for four years, so I don't think we've really changed anything. But when you were sitting watching h you're in Daton, I bet you were watching the Cincinnati and the u c l A game last night. When you see on the breaking news grid alongside all of the scores that are games going on, an NFL player that you have never heard of announces he's bisexual. Is that breaking news? It's It's like when you go to a concert and they start talking politics or something. It's like, I'm just not what I'm saying to see. It's it's fine that this is a sports network. It's almost I don't it's not a story. It's someone's bisexual. Okay, I don't even know who that is. Yeah, I wasn't Smith came out of the closet, you know. Yeah, if you're a super thanksical, if you're super famous and anything like, okay, maybe, but is it it's like a people news story. I thought I was getting pranked. When I'm sitting watching I'm like trying to keep tabs on the Clemson score at the bottom of the screen because I don't have the a CC network, and instead of getting the Clemson score, I'm constantly getting cycled through. This random dude that I've never heard of has announced that he's bisexual. Like, what what world am I living in? That the four thousand best NFL player announcing he's bisexual is breaking news on the sports news ticker. I mean, I legitimately thought, like, am I being pranked? Like more power to this guy? I first I thought, I said Ryan Russilo. I swear to god, I thought the same thing because I was like, I was like, Russillo is by wow. I didn't I didn't know. I'm glad I wasn't the only guy. Like when I saw that come across my Twitter feed from like ESPN, I was like, Russilo just came out and announced he's bicycle. I know, but I know Russilo. Good for him. I guess I had no idea, and I was like, but why is the ESPN breaking this story? Didn't he just go to the ringer? I mean that that is one million percent. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I thought Ryan Rissilo just announced he was bisexual. I was gonna text him. I was gonna be like, dude, I didn't know this. Good for you, But yeah, what's this guy's name? Ryan Russell? I've never I've never heard I watch again, doub you said you. I've watched a lot of NFL. I've never heard of this guy. I watched a lot of college football. I've never heard of this guy in my life. I mean, yeah, the number of hours I've spent on the couch watching NFL football is pretty astonishing, really, And I've never heard of this guy ever. And what's crazy is I'm gonna be the only person in all of sports media who will even bring this up. I guarantee you nine of dudes who were watching at least of people who were watching ESPN last night during the Cincinnati and U c l A game, and they're watching the scores at the bottom of the screen to see what the games are looking like elsewhere, Major League Baseball scores. Whatever you need. If you're gambling on college football like I was, you didn't have the A C C network. I'm trying to keep tabs on it when it's going by, you know, because they'll update it, you know, they'll put the new score up as soon as it happens. And so I'm watching that and then every few lines it will come back around again. This guy that I don't know as announced that he's bisexual. I gat and people are like, how is that breaking news? How is it remotely breaking news? As just my question, like, more power to him, be happy, Brian or Silo, Ryan Russell, whoever it is. But it's not breaking news if it was a superstar player. Okay, maybe I still don't think people care. It's not like people are you, Like I thought Dak Prescott deserved thirty million dollars a year, and then I found out he was bisexual. Now I'm totally against. Like, if he can play quarterback at a high level, my opinion on his value as a player doesn't change one iota based on who he sleeps with. I think there's this desperate need to feel like this is a story, but I don't think the American public believes this is a story at all. And it makes me wonder who were these like gatekeepers at ESPN that are trying to just voice this up on us all the time. And I do think and what I think about this as a parent, I do think there are a lot of parents who watch sports with their five, six seven year old kids, and when they they five, a five year old six year old, my guess is has never seen the word bisexual. They also probably don't even really understand sex period. And I guarantee you there were tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, maybe even more than that, of people parents last night who got asked by kids who have just learned how to read what's a bisexual? Dad or mom? I guess that's a conversation you can have and should have at some point. Is that one you really want to have with your five year old where you're six year old when you're watching a college football game? Probably not a little bit awkward? Well, Johnny, normal sex. I mean, that's tough. That's a tough to talk about normal sex with your five year old. We could still I still tell the Stork story with my four year old if he has any questions, where did I come from? Well, dad and mom got married and then we got you. As far as I want to go right now, Well, your four year olds already asked you this. No, but I'm saying if, like, my my eight year old was reading the screen last night while we're watching the game, and he didn't ask me directly, but he's watching for Brave scores and I can see him. And when you're eight, like, you're aware a little bit of sex existing. But I'm like, should I have a conversation with him about what bisexual means when he doesn't even really know what sex is. He just kind of has this idea that sex is, you know, something that at some point in his life may impact him. I just it's crazy to me. Who else wants to weigh in on this? We have other callers? Yeah we do. Let's go to gym in Texas. Jim, what's up? Yeah? Yeah, you're on say Clay Hey, um almost fifty four years old. I am five eight about pounds. I am a horse whisper. I cannot get on the racetrack at Canterbury Downs, Loueeziana Downs. I am being discriminated against. That's a story. Uh, it's just not right. The baseball's juice to Andrew Luck would have blown out ato Achilles in ESPN cannot keep putting their footing them up and just can't cover sports, appreciate it. Great show. I don't know how any of those things can act. Yeah, I hope I don't. It was like he was on five different talk shows all at the same time. I know. I mean, his entrance line was for Dan Patrick. He agreed with us. I know that's a good or bad thing. Who's up next? We got Mike in Modesto. Mike what shakin? Hey, you're absolutely right. Aaron Rodgers could kneel today, tomorrow, the next day, Patrick Mahon's, etc. The reality is Colin Kaepernick lost his job to blame Gabbert and that says it all. You're absolutely right, Clay. He just wants to weigh in on that. The Kaepernick part was not a big part. It was you. My theory in general in life is that so long as your talent exceeds your problems, you're gonna be fine. And if you want to do things that are outside the bounds of normalcy, however you wanted to find what is normal, you better be really good at your job in order to keep that job. Um, and so, I don't think people care at all about anything other than the production of a player relative to his cost. I really don't. I think people want the best possible player to play and they don't care about anything else. And there's this crazy agenda that's out there that it's like, I'm not even allowed to be think about this. I want you to think about this for a minute. I'm the only thing about why this is? Why am I the only guy that will even tweet how ridiculous this is, or we'll say it on a national radio show in the world of sports. It's because everybody that and I, and it's something that I think almost a huge majority of people agree with me on this. They do not think that it's breaking news that a player they've never heard of before is announcing he's bisexual. And they don't think, at a minimum that it should be on the ticker or that when they get onto the ESPN app this morning, when they wake up to see who won the games last night. After college football kicked off and after the NFL kicked off off, the final week of the preseason, got the US open going on Major League Baseball uh playoff race, and the lead story on ESPN dot com is a guy you've never heard of announcing that he's bisexual out kick v I P Line. Who's up? It is Nashville on the way. What's you guy for me? Hey? So, when Kevin Spacey got these sexual allegations against him, he went and and said, you know, okay, I'm a gay man. I want to live my life as a gay man. And the LGBTQ community said, whoa, don't go hiding underneath the rainbow here. Now, this guy is a no name NFL free agent who otherwise would not be noticed unless he came out and said that he was a bi sexual man. And so my take is that either he's doing this to try to get himself noticed, and you know, hopefully it with force NFL owner's hands to say, well, if you're really tolerant, you would include this guy, get him a workout, get him a tryout. And this is what I see happening here. I think there's just I think there's a strong argument for that guy that nobody would ever have heard of otherwise announces that he's bisexual, and ESPN takes the bait and writes a huge piece about it. I just the whole thing is crazy to me. I mean, I think we're down the down the rabbit hole. Of Crazytown. Anybody else want to weigh end or you don't need to take a break and get ready for our next guest. Yeah, all right, So I want you to just think about this. Just think about this. What does this say about gatekeepers deciding what stories they think you should have put in front of you, Because this is not an example. Sometimes people get upset there, like, oh, why do people keep talking about Lebron James or why do people keep talking about Tom Brady, or why do people keep talking about Trevor Lawrence or two U or anybody else who depending on what sport you're talking about, is at the pinnacle of that sport. And the answer is, well, because they're the best at what they do. That's what people respond to and react to. They want to read one way or the other about the people who are the best at what they do in the world of sports and the aspects of their story. Zeke right now and whether or not he is going to be signed by the Cowboys by the time the season starts. Massive story and so this is not a real story. And yet ESPN has decided to put their entire agenda journalism team behind this such that you can't escape it. While you're trying to watch a game and such that you can't escape it while you're trying to go see the scores of a game. And some people can say, well, why would you talk about it? And I think the answer is normal people. Reasonable people need to push back against others making decisions for you. They're trying to use you to use their agilda to get in front of you. And here's what they're really hoping. They're hoping that some athlete or some coach is gonna say something now in an NFL locker room, because now they're gonna go in, they're gonna ask everybody, what do you think about this guy you've never heard of before being bisexual? Would you be okay with him in your locker room? You know this is what's gonna happen now, right, They're gonna go around to a thousand NFL players and ask them all that exact same question, and the player is gonna say, most of the time, yeah, Look, if they're good at their job, they can do whatever they want. And then somebody they'll eventually find somebody who tweets something or says something a little bit outside the bounds of acceptability, and they'll put them through a re education camp and they'll turn it into a huge story about how the NFL is intolerant. That's what they're hoping to do. It's agenda based journalism that isn't even a sports story, designed to try to take over the world of sports for again partisan political purposes. It's woke center bs. I think people need to call it out. That's what I do on my show. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows at Fox sports Radio dot com and within the I Heart Radio app search f s R to listen live. So he's been with us on Monday for a while, but now I got a new gig, so we're moving him to Friday. And maybe that's why I thought it was Monday earlier. And that's why we've got Alex Marvez on now. So people are rattled, don't be rattled. It's not Monday. You only have to work one more day then you get the weekend. Alex Marvez with us now at Alex Marvez on Twitter. Appreciate you joining us. Let's start off with what I think is the biggest NFL story out there. What in the world's gonna happen with Zeke Now that Jerry Jones is basically saying, hey, maybe we won't have him signed by the start of the season. Well, I think it's a matter of blinking right, I mean, and if the Cowboys start poorly at the running game isn't going the well, are they able to leverage that, you know, the Z camp into a big, good deal and ultimately come in and signed you know, Zeke to to get an a year of you know, an accruge season, would have to play for six games. Although I do believe by holding out as long as he has, he avoided some things in his contract as far as getting a step closer to the free agency. Jay Glazer and his mail bag as you know, at the Athletic expressing optimism that you know, a deal could be done by a week one. But I think they got to be realistic too. I don't think they necessarily want to make Zeke Elliott the highest paid running back in the NFL, And they've said it. They don't want to be what they were before, which was the trend setter of setting these huge deals. So ultimately, you know, when the Zeke decide for his own sake, he's got to get in. I don't know if he's going to do it without a new contract. Jerry trying to say all the right things here, you know, and I think he's a little bit red faced about all this as well, to be quite honest with you'd play and he's trying to you know, spent it positive. We understand he's not going to be here and say all these good things. But reality is Zeke Elliott hold out. They held out, they can't get a deal done, and Jerry supposed to be a dealmaker. What do you think, okay, Zeke will be thinking if he's not playing week one, Jerry Jones said, oh, I know he's rooting for the Cowboys everything else. Do you think Ezekiel Elliott actually he's rooting for the Cowboys or do you think he wants them to fall flat on their face and look like the Cowboys did back in when they lost the first two games without him at Smith and Jerry Jones came back to him att hat in hand and said, what do you need? Let me write the check. Isn't that a terrible thing, right? I mean, for Zeke because you're hurting your team by not being there, and if they starting too while a large particle was because of you. So if you come in ultimately after that, if you come in early in the season while the team is struggling and are able to make a positive impact and get him on track to do what Nat did you know? That's one thing. But you're right. I mean, it's a very I don't want to say. It's hard to say selfish, you know, type of thing that Eke Elliott is doing because I understand that he wants more money and he feels he outplayed his contract that everybody else is there. You look around the league and how many guys are still not you know, hold out to Melvin Gordon Zekel. If if the league had every layer decide that I want to get paid more, I'm not going to show up from my contract, you know, to honor my contract, we wouldn't have a league, right and the Cowboys are trying to stop shoot this and you know, but at some point to play, did they just say enough enough? We've got to make a trade. We got to find another running back. See what We'll see what's out there with Shawn McCoy. Is he potentially available in Buffalo? I'm just using him as a name. Is there someone else out there that can help this team, because at some point they're gonna have to cut data on a beak for two thousand and nineteen and say, well, we'd love to have you here, but we've got to make a move to make our team better. I just don't know too how else Tony Paul are going to do the board round pick out of Memphis. Does he does? He helps soften this blow? Is he Kelly and not being there. It's a lot of pressure to put on a rookie running back, especially when it comes to the past pro game where you're catching passes out of the backfield. You've got to be able to block. I mean those things that take a little bit of time for a rookie. So yeah, the Cowboys between a rock and a hard place. There's no question. Ryan Fitzpatrick. Other major news, the only real quarterback battle that was out there in the NFL. Ryan Fitzpatrick is announced as the starter over joshuro In for the Miami Dolphins. What does this tell us? Just just I mean, how about that guy starts for eight different teams and so to the Dolphins are a terrible team. Number one. It tells you to that Josh Rosen just isn't coming along as quickly as anyone would have liked. And you know, he is a second year player. It's a third different offense. I get all that, But in a perfect world, Josh Rosen would have done something in the preseason. So they claim to this job. But from what my understanding is to Whyon Fitzpatrick's a bit of a sacrificial land. The Dolphins realized they have challenges on offense, and you sort of throw Fitzpatrick out there to try to settle things, to try to get the offense into a groove early in the season as all these guys learned to play with each other in a new system, and then you hand the reins over the Josh Rosen. But again, what has Josh done any play that we've seen this preseason and he said, oh wow, you know, this is why they drafted the guy in the first round. I mean we've seen that, you know, from Daniel Jones for example, He's got a couple of those moments like that forty yard past to Cody Latimer where you say, okay, this is why you drafted this guy. Not the case for Josh Rosen. And again I get the fact that he has terrible talent surrounding him, but nonetheless he just have seen nothing from him. This is round Fitzpatrick's jobs to lose all along. I'll be honest with I don't know how much Josh Rosen has really impressed his head to Brian Flores. I think Brian wanted some growth on some things from Josh, such as, you know, luss demonstrat body language or something goes wrong. We can expressed that to Josh and say, you know, look, if there's any complete passive the receiver runs a long route, don't let your shoulder slump. Guys notice it. So Josh frozen trying to grow into the position. But each game that he doesn't start, he becomes a game further from being able to stay claimed to the starting job. And thank for too. It begins to Miami officially when you look at at at the larger kind of universe there of the Miami Dolphins quarterback position. Now that Josh Rosen hasn't won this out, presuming that he doesn't come in and dominate, do you think there's a hundred percent chance that the Miami Dolphins are right now already thinking, okay, do we want justin Herbert, Do we want to do we want Jake from or anybody else who might be in the draft, or do you think they still believe that maybe Josh Rozen could be the guy down the line because they gave up a second round pick for him right there. That's the reason why I'm asking the Dolphins are doing Dolphin things, you know what I mean? And I think in their case because they can see like they still have two second round picks next year. In fact, they have multiple picks in every round except for the first round at this point, and if they make another trade of a quality player like a laramie' hunsel, which to me would make no sense, but you know, you could end up, you know what I'm saying, You could end up with even more picks moving forward, Maybe they end up with the next ra one. This whole season was designed for pank for to it. They had more than a hundred million dollars available in salary camp space heading into the next offseason, all of those draft picks. This is just basically the wheat out season under Brian Floores. The team owner is Steven Ross has admitted I'm going to be patient because we have to start from scratch they're letting Chris Career build this roster. I'm not sure what Chris Deer has done to deserve the chance to build this roster. With the way that the Dolphins have been built over the past two years, I guess we can blame my cannon bomb, we can blame Madam Gaze anyone else. I mean, it's just when you look at Steven Ross and his ownership, it's been a disaster. I mean, he hasn't won a playoff game yet he's owned the team for more than a decade. I mean, you know, he's done a lot to build up the stadium, his facility, given a lot of money to charitable causes. I get all that. He's also a political fundraiser or two along the way, but the guy just hasn't been able to find any sort of success as an owner. And it's been you know, Josh Rose and another example of the problems at quarterback. I mean we're talking about I sink were up to what about eighteen different guys that have started a quarterback since Day Marino over the over the courts of twenty years. And I'm not exaggerating. I mean that is literally where we're at right now. In terms of Dolphins TVs. They just can't get the position right, the figure. The easiest way to do it is with the number one pick. It's almost been six years now, I mean six days now. We're talking to Alex Marvez at Alex Marvez. Six days ago Andrew luck in the blockbuster that that shocked everybody announces he's gonna retire. How stunned were you buy this news? And what do you think that Colts are contemplating going forward? It was stunning news. And anyone that says that this was though he was thinking about this in March, and team management knew and they were trying to talk about that's all bs. I mean, if you know, they basically got win from him earlier in the week that he was done, and then mentally he had checked out. And it's it's interesting with luck play because you know, he could have collected a ton of cash going an injured reserve fifteen million dollars, just saying hey, look I'm gonna rehab my my leg. I'll come back when I'm right. I just put me on I R. And instead he was just mentally burnt and the Colts talked to him and he just wasn't in a good place mentally. He just didn't want to keep playing football. So it is stunning. I don't know what you know. This is where to the problems with the medical staff and the way that they rehabed Andrew Luck and all the beating that he's taken, just he just had checked out on them. So now Jacoby Percet is a big winner in all this play. I mean, he's got a chance now over the course of a season to show that he's a bona fide starter in the NFL. You can't answer anything more, Drew Jacoby Precett. He had taken every first team snap during the off season program, the preseason. I mean, and we'll see where he can take this team. This is not a powerhouse division. The Texans losing, you know, Lamar Miller to a torn a c l also on Saturday night, the you know, the offensive line, maxsues that they have the Tennessee do we trust Mariota is gonna be Ryan Tanney Hills team. I think there's a lot of questions about how that you know that offense is going to be run and Jacksonville there's a great story on Leonard for Nette and Bleacher report of it how he turned his life around, But you know, is he really going to be able to stay injury freaking this jack team get some traction in two thouns and a nineteen after such slippics last year. So this division is still there for the cold staking even with covid, per said, and they're just gonna have to tweet the offense around him and one thing to play. They wanted to run the football more this year. Guys were walking around in their team facility wearing these caps this offseason says run the damn ball. And it's something that Frankwich wants to have a top five rushing attack and has been stressing it. So you're just know you're gonna see him a lot of Marlon Max, your fantasy football player is not definitely going up. We're talking to Alex Marvez. Alex, last question for you. I'm assuming you watched it all at for sure, Florida, Miami. What was your take? I was there, I was there, was there. Yeah, I went down to drop two on a fifty bucks on a ticket off the middle of nowhere, but it was worth every time. Excited to be honest with you, and you know, listen I'm not a great game, but this is such a weird game to be played. August twenty four, University of Miami defense is pretty good. I'm gonna be a little bit of a Philippe Frank's apologist. Wasn't a perfect game, but he won and he directed the game winning drive. And I don't know if Philippe Frank's a Week four or Week five of two thousand and any teams you know would have been capable of that and have that resiliency to be able to lead this team to a victory. And listen, he's a placeholder. We acknowledge that. I mean, there's a kid coming in and Anthony Richardson who from whose local and games that it's going to come into quarterback and he's more of the mobile type quarter of Philippe is such a big guy, just not a real mobile quarterback. Dan Molin has had to change his offense around this guy. You know, there's a more there's more athletic quarterbacks on the way. So to meet anything we'll get out of Franks this year that that you know, I'm not saying he's gonna lead us to a championship, but so to hold the hold the four Town's school to kit that quarterback piece, right, But ay to the Gators to win. I'll take the w even they didn't cover all right, I know I said the last question, but a real last question for you. Uh, this Carly Voyd story, I think it's one of the most ridiculous stories I've ever seen in the history of sports. For anyone that believes she could actually kick in an NFL game, Uh, this is laughably absurd. I don't know how much conversation there has been about this legitimately that you've heard in NFL circles from teams and players and coaches. But what is your take? I mean everyone is sort of just you know, giving it. You know, they're they're talking about it, right, and that the pain of lip service, I guess is the best way to put it. You know, look, she's never done this. You know when you notice the kick that she made more power to her right, she looks like fifteen steps. Yeah, I mean, could you imagine having to do this in a competitive game, shortening your steps that the field goal doesn't get blocked. I mean, those types of things, and it just it just no one wants to make that type of investment because it takes years and years and years to hone this, and even then, we don't have enough fit kickers in the league as it is now. Is there gonna be someone along the way beside Terry Lloyd who probably could could be hm an NFL kicker? Absolutely, And you know, I don't want to say a PR stunt, but maybe it's like a show that Okay, well, we're a league to s willing to consider anything you may next offseason see someone sign a kicker, you know, from the women's soccer team to try to you know, promote it. But I just don't think that. I mean, she's just not ready. And I just still teams from that time to wait, you know, for someone to sign him to a contract and then work with them like that that doesn't have that type of experience. I just again, it's a lot of lip service. You're right. I wouldn't say it's the most absurd story maybe, but it's pretty belas You're right about that. Alex Marvez, Thanks as always. We'll talk to you next week. This is outkicked the coverage with Clay Travis. Welcome back, Geico, I'll kick studios. Last night, Clemson brought down the house on the a CC network brought down all the house on Georgia Tech gets a big win fifty two to fourteen. But the a CC network launch I don't think went very well. I want to start go back around on this. I couldn't watch the game. Now I could have gotten an illegal pirated feed and streamed it, but I was more interested in just kind of watching the score. And I'm curious for everybody on this show, we all have different cable and satellite providers who had the ability to watch it. I could not. I have Comcast, Danny G. You have Spectrum, which said they carry it, but they only carry it in the standard tier if you live in an A C C state. You live in California, So you thought you could watch it, you couldn't. I was so excited because I actually googled it and it said yes for Charter Spectrum. But you're right, it didn't give me the details on the fact that in California, I can't. You can. You just have to pay extra for it, which I'm not going to. Yeah, what about you, Dub, do you have it? No, I'm on a T and T. You verse or my my mom, your parents passwords and you steal, so you couldn't even steal your parents version of the a CC network. I know, no criminal behavior. Last night I was a little boring. Yeah all right, what about you, Eddie Garcia? Could you watch it? No? I have Direct TV, and I did see on my guide that it was there, But apparently my my whatever it is I pay for, the package I pay for, does not include it. So this is kind of a big deal, I think, because what about you, Roberto, what do you have? Yeah, Dove typ your parents to get PlayStation View. They have the best sports package there is there. I watch you watched it on PlayStation View. Okay, so everybody on the show, only Roberto is able to watch it. And I think this is interesting because this hasn't been talked about very much by people who are following kind of the college football universe. The SEC and the Big Ten have wildly successful networks. The Pack twelve has been a much maligned network that has never really made sense. But the A c C Network announced that they're on all these different cable and satellite services, but they're not actually on it if you're from outside the footprint, and they're not even on it unless you're paying extra for sports packages by and large, because uh Dan, Danny g yours theoretically exists and has it, shouldn't I get it? Though I pay? I have their internet too, but my bill is a hundred and sixty two dollars a month, so my package should include it for that much that I'm paying each month. Look, there are a lot of people out there that are cutting the cord because they're looking at it and they're saying, wait a minute, you're expecting me to pay X dollars for cable or satellite. And now I got Netflix, and now I got Amazon Prime, and now I got this new Disney Plus that's coming up in this new I got HBO, I got uh w W network to Zonne. The reality is everybody said for a long time, oh, I want to be able to pick all the stations and just pay for the ones I watch. Well, that's kind of what streaming is. But streaming is gonna end up costing you more than your cable package did before all is said and done. So when you get into these kind of situations with the A C C network where a lot of people who are big sports fans are having to call specifically to get it done. Um mean It's ridiculous that the Atlanta is a big market for the A c C. Right no one in Atlanta who has cable was able to watch Georgia Tech play last night. I mean, that's crazy. Cox doesn't have it and Comcast doesn't have it, And that is wild to think about if you're a cable subscriber in the city of Atlanta, which is pretty big city, pretty big market for the A c C. They don't even have the A c C network right now. This thing is that is aster and a lot of people haven't recognized how bad it's been so far. But I think a lot of people are waking up this morning thinking they were gonna be able to watch last night and they weren't able to. We come back. What's the latest on Zekiel Elliott's contract situation. What takeaways do we have from the universe of college football last night? And what lessons, if any, have we learned from the NFL preseason Final Hour of the Week. Next This is outkicked the coverage with plate Traffic. Appreciate all of you spending your week with us. It's Friday. Rejoice. College football officially back last night. They are games tonight. There games Saturday, their games Sunday, and there are games Monday. Will be live with you, by the way, on Labor Day, not taking Labor Day off, so we will be here Danny G and myself on Monday with you. Try not to ever take Labor Day off because it's the first weekend of college football, and it's the opening week of the NFL season, and I know a lot of you are working, and if you're not working, you want to listen on the podcast, or you're still up and about moving around getting ready for the official start of the college football season and the official start of the NFL season. So just so you know, we'll be with you Monday and every day next week and hopefully I won't miss a day again until Thanksgiving. That's my plan. It's my plan. We'll see whether or not it ends up coming to fruition, but that is my hope, all right. So what do we learned last night in the opening night of college football? First thing I would say we learned is that U c l A is not close to being back. Usually it's year two where a coach takes the step with his team if that coach is going to be dominant and a wildly successful coach at the new school that he has taken over at instead. For U c l A fans last night, the Bruins were flat out of awful. They were atrocious. Cincinnati was okay, They were just okay. They should have won that game by three touchdowns. Cincinnati didn't even play that well. But you see, LA only had two plays all night long. They hit one big pass play for a touchdown on a totally busted coverage and they made a nice catch from a receiver on a deep ball. If you're just waking up right now, I'm sorry, you see LA fans for having to rehash with you, but there's a lot of optimism surrounding Chip Kelly, and so far through thirteen games, none of it, maybe with the exception of the performance against USC, has offered any positivity whatsoever. That was an atrocious performance by U c l A last night. Cincinnati, coming off in a eleven win season, had to replace a lot again. They didn't play that fantastically well or even very well at all. They should have won that game by three touchdowns, but they ended up winning a big opener in Cincinnati, So the Bearcat faithful have to feel good. If you're a u c l A fan, even in the woffle Pack twelve South. I think you have to be troubled by what you saw. What beyond that that we learned well, Trevor Lawrence a lot of hype all off season, long Clemson star quarterback who we last saw slicing apart the Alabama defense with a lot of big time third down throws in San Francisco in the Bay Area. For the national title game. He came out against Georgia Tech. He was just okay, just okay. Two interceptions, one touchdown, thirteen twenty three passing under two hundred yards. Not that impressive of a start for Trevor Lawrence. Now, the opponent was clearly overmatched. Georgia Tech had the triple option offense for years under Paul Johnson, now trying to go back to a more of a spread offensive attack, and they just don't have the offensive weapons to be able to do anything in terms of major successes, especially against the team as good as Clemson. So we basically saw a kind of what I expected to see. I thought the score of this game would be something like forty to ten. Instead it was fifty two fourteen, pretty close by the way, we got the game right on Cincinnati, we got the game right on the UH, on the game between Clemson and Georgia Tech, and we also from a gambling perspective, got this other game right the Holy War. Utah wins it's ninth in a row and served notice finally that maybe there's a decent Pack twelve team out there, because in the wake of the u c l A loss as Stadiums Prett McMurphy tweeted, the Pack twelve has lost its last five to the American Athletic Conference and the Pack twelve has lost its last five games to the Mountain West Conference. That is not an ideal endorsement if you were out there in the PAC twelve fandom trying to argue that your school or your conference deserves a spot in the playoff. The Pac twelve success has been awful awful of late, and Utah may well be the best team in the Pack twelve. South Cal Whittingham might be the most underrated coach currently coaching right now in college football, but they got their ninth straight win in the Holy War. That game also went under So not the kind of got a brag or draw attention to myself, but We went three for three last night. If you bet all the picks that I gave you to end the third hour of the show yesterday, or you just bet the picks that are posted on my website OutKick dot com right up there for everybody to check out. Got a bunch more picks for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. All right. So that is where we are in the world of college football. Also, Minnesota manages to hold on beat South Dakota State. We got a big win from Central Florida. Not a lot of drama. Even Yukon managed to get past Wagner, which is pretty wild that Wagner almost beat Yukon. All Right, that is all of the college football news that I believe is out there. A CC network launched. It was not a very successful launch. A lot of people not able to watch that game between Clemson and Georgia Tech. I don't see things going forward being better in the near future. I think the a CEC network is going to be a lot more like the Pack twelve network than it is the SEC or the Big ten network. So that is what is going on out there in the world of college football. What about in the world of the NFL was a couple of big stories. One, Ryan Fitzpatrick has officially been named the starter of the Miami Dolphins, meaning that a former U c l A quarterback on a night when the current U c l A quarterback was not very good, the former U c l A quarterback is now the backup in Miami. Josh Rosen's first round draft pick, uh two years ago, now on his second offensive system and has been uh, not very good but getting out by way and Fitzpatrick is pretty tough. So that was the only uncertainty, the only real quarterback debate drama that was still ongoing in the world of the NFL. So Brian Flores sweeps away that suspense and lets us know that Ryan Fitzpatrick will in fact be the starter for the Miami Dolphins at least to begin this year. And bigger news in terms of a team with the hopes of contending for the Super Bowl. Jerry Jones, in the wake of the Dallas Cowboys game last night, came out and said flat out that he now expected that Zeke Elliott might well miss at least one game, if not more. Here's what Jerry Jones had to say last night right now is one of his regular sits on about my entire expectation before we were putting together SG right now would anticipate down training, that's gonna miss the games. I just wanted to accept that. That's Jerry Jones now saying for a long time, Oh, we don't think Zeke is gonna miss any games, now saying he expects for Zekiel Elliott to miss games. What does that mean? Well, if Tony Pollard still available in your fantasy football league, which he probably is not, you might want to grab him. If your fantasy football draft hasn't happened yet, you might not want to grab Ezekiel Elliott. And if you're betting in the NFL futures, not a lot of value right now on the Dallas Cowboys, just because of all the tumult all the uncertainty surrounding Zeke, surrounding deck, surrounding Marii Cooper. I know they gave Jalen Smith a new extension, but there still is a lot of money to be spent down in Big d and Jerry Jones has to decide how to spend it, and it sounds like he's willing to let Ezeki Elliott miss some games now. Maybe this is gonna turn out like when Emmett Smith held out in although to be fair to Emmett Smith, he didn't have a contract at all. But it took the Dallas Cowboys losing their first two games that season for Jerry Jones to open up his pocketbook bring back in em Att Smith. Maybe if you're Ezekiel Elliot, you're sitting there saying, if he who repeats itself, maybe the value here, even though I hate that for my team to lose, is for my team to be mediocre or bad, not as good with without me as they would be with me, and put some pressure on Jerry Jones to actually get that deal done. So those are all the stories that are out there right now on a large degree, uh, surrounding the NFL and college football. Anything that I missed, Danny g from your perspective and watching football last night, we only got to see highlights of Trevor Lawrence because of the fact we couldn't see the a CC network. The one thing I'll say, that really bad interception he threw. Did you see his hustle as he tracked down the defender that intercepted him, And that paid dividends because then they went on to intercept Georgia. Yeah. Yeah, watching him hustle that was awesome. He obviously didn't have his best game, but just watching him leag that out, that was great. You're right about U c l A. They looked just like U c l A of last season. And it's curious why their star running back Joshua Kelly was standing there on the sideline with his helmet on. Yeah, and the and chip Kelly was asked about that at halftime, and so I feel like it must be like a double secret probation or secret suspension because on the right strange that Chip Kelly didn't put him em at also kind of tried to dodge the question at halftime as he ran back out about why or why not one of his star players was not competing. What about you, dub anything else that you noticed on the night of college football in the NFL. I mean you pretty much covered. But one thing I will say for Utah, they did look impressive running the ball, but their quarterback it did not seem or did not play very well last night. Most of his he was thirteen for sixteen last night with like a hundred and five yards, but down the field passing was just not really in the game plan at all. So that's just one thing. If I was a Utah fan, I would be concerned about because they do have very high aspirations this season, and if you know he he doesn't play better than that, then I don't think those are very realistic and the Holy War. For b YU to lose a ninth straight is a tough spot to be in and it's not necessarily going to get a lot easier. Although we don't know what Tennessee is gonna talent's gonna look like, but b y U is traveling to Knoxville for a game next weekend against Tennessee, which is a pretty big one for both teams. Obviously b y U doesn't want to go into and Tennessee feels like they need to win out of conference games in order to put themselves in a decent position for a bowl game, given how tough SEC conference play can be. All right, what about you, Eddie, Anything that I'm missing? No, I don't think anything that you're missing. Um, you know, we saw Clemson and Texas and m both win and they'll play each other next week, so a lot of you want to look forward to it. But again, U c l A watching that game, and you know someone who really thought that Chip Kelly higher was great? I think everyone did. They looked like a poorly coached team, and I'm just shocked that that they looked so bad. Yeah, it wasn't just that the offense was atrocious, which it was, and that they play they weren't lining up right. They didn't look like a well coached team. I know it's a season opener, but it was bad for a season opener even. Yeah, and I will say also that crew last night, which was I believe at Pack twelve crew, they threw a lot of flags and picked up a lot of flags. And partly that's, hey, good communication, let's not throw let's not have penalties and forced where we don't need them. But also I don't know that I've seen that many flags thrown and then picked up. As a result, I thought it was just a disjointed, not particularly very smooth game. And it reminded me a lot, honestly of the Floor to Miami game, where I felt like Florida probably should have pulled away, and I feel like Cincinnati should have pulled away last night. Never happened, and as a result, came down to until later moments in the game. Then then it certainly should have. Roberto, what about you? What you noticed last night? Yeah, like an he said, man usually looked so terrible. And if that quarterback is the best to have, I mean completed of his passes, it was awful. Where's Bob Toledo? Man? Yeah? Where's Bob Toledo? Indeed, by the way, quick pull from you guys, just a yes, no is all I need. Does Ezekiel Elliott start Game one as the Dallas Cowboys starting running back? Danny g No? What about you? Dub What about you? Eddie? What about you? Roberto? I agree, it's unanimous. That's sometimes dangerous. But up until yesterday, maybe late last night, Fox Bet had the odds that that that that being more likely than not that Zeke would not miss any games at all. And Sal on our show cousin sal has been adamant that he'll be there. But it certainly seems like something changed for Jerry Jones last night compared to the night before. All Right, when we come back, we're gonna be joined by Joel Clatt. I believe he's supposed to be with us. He's in Columbus Ohio getting ready to call the f a U versus Ohio State game. He's the lead college football announcer for Fox Sports, and he's gonna join us every single Friday in our three. Be sure to catch live editions about kick the Coverage with Clay Travis week days at six am Eastern, three am Pacific. Let's bring in Joel Clatt. He is in Columbus, Ohio, getting ready for the noon eastern big kickoff coming from Fox Sports, as Ohio State will be hosting f A U. Lane Kiffin headed in to play against Ryan Day first game there. We'll get to that game in a a bit, but I want to start Joel. I'm sure you were watching last night. What in the world's up with U c l A. They were a promocious last night? So bad? Yeah, I mean that was Uh? Can the can the year have started out any worse? For the Pack twelve? I mean, my gosh, Arizona loses to Hawaii. Um and listen, Cincinnati is a good team. I don't want to say like this is the you know, a total dumpster fire, but Cincinnati one eleven games are a good team. U c l A was on the road. The quarterback mysteriously dropped the ball twice. Probably the call was the wrong call, but you can't overturn it on the fumble that U c l A picked up and returned for a touchdown. All that being said, at the end of last year, I thought U c l A was turning a corner. I thought that they were getting better under Chip Kelly. I thought that they would come out this year and show some marked improvement. And they didn't. And and that conference, unfortunately, it's more for me, it's more about the conference. That conference is just abysmal right now. And if Oregon goes out and it loses to Auburn, it's over. I mean, no one's gonna I mean they're oh and five in their last five games against the a C, not A C C, the A A C. I think that there's something like oh and three or o and four in their last four against the Mountain West. Like the Pack twelve is awful, I mean it is. If If Oregon loses to Auburn and that game is taking place on Saturday night, is I think the biggest and best game of the opening weekend of college football, then what you hit on is likely true, which is the Pack t even if they have a team really look good, it's not going to get the benefit of the doubt because they don't have any scalps. None none. I mean, Utah looked okay at times, and you have to give them a much more of a pass because of the local rivalry aspect, you know, with b y U. But I think Utah is a good football team. They again proved last night that they don't have a great ability to throw the ball when they really need to. But they're gonna have a great defense, They're gonna be able to run it really well. They're probably gonna win that South Division. Um. But but this is here, here's the thing that they're going up against, contrasted with the SEC. You know, and and sit back, and you might want to record this because I'm gonna throw a little praise here at the SEC. You must be I would say you're drunk, but we know you stopped drinking, so I don't even know what excuse you could possibly have. I don't know. Maybe it's like it's early for me, you know, I'm on the East coast. But and and this is this is a hypothetical, and you love hypotheticals, but think about what the SEC has a chance to do in the non conference, okay, and they already took care of one of these. They beat Miami, So Florida beats Miami. There's a good chance that Miami is in the a c C championship game against Clemson at the end of the year. Now Auburn has a chance to beat Oregon this weekend. There's a really good chance Oregon is in the Pac twelve championship game at the end of the year. L s U in Texas play next week. There's a really good chance that Texas is in the Big twelve championship game at the end of the year. Sake of argument, let's say the SEC goes three and o in those games, Clay, there's a really good chance none of those SEC teams are in their championship game. So they're gonna be able to point at that and say, whoever places for our championship. Probably Alabama and Georgia should both get into the playoff. No, I mean it would be a it would be a strong argument if that were to materialize. All right, U C l A didn't look good, and certainly Utah gets the Holy War win ninth in a row for for Kyle Whittingham, which is a incredible performance by him and by his program. But let's go to the other big game. Obviously that was taking place at least because one of the teams is really good. What did you see from Trevor Lawrence? Were you actually able to watch this game? Did you have the a CC network in Columbus? No, not in our hotel, so um we I had it for a bit at the restaurant that we were at, So I watched most of the first half. I was I was impressed with Clemson. I mean, you come out there. I mean, shoot, it's the league game, and they took care of Georgia Tech as if Georgia Tech was you know, Furman or someone like that. I mean, Clemson is just on another level. They have reached that level where they are like Bama. You know, it's no longer that we just have men who can beat Bama. I mean Clemson Alabama have separated themselves from the pack. Um. I didn't know, and I didn't have a great look at it, but whatever happened before the end of the half was was kind of strange, and I think Lawrence, you know, made a kind of a mistake. But Here's the thing that I think is so important about Clemson is that they are not one dimensional. How many teams do we see play in college football that are really good at something and have nothing else in their arsenal. And for Clemson, you can take away a wide receiver, you could take away Lawrence, you can try to take away E. T N. But the others will get you, you know. I mean that so E t N and his performance was tremendous. That team is got the that conferences I think really bad, and they're going to walk to the playoff. Like put them in and pen and sharpie, whatever you wanna do. Clemson is going to the college football playoff again. Putting in that context, Todd Ferman, you were on with us Wednesday, unlock it in. Todd Ferman says that the only team that will be uh the tightest game potentially Clemson will have from an Oddsmaker perspective all season long, at least in the regular season, is Texasing and m Next week in UH Columbia, sorry, in in in in Spartanburg, and in Clemson, they will be a seventeen point underdog. I mean, that's pretty amazing that in their entire regular season, they will be favored by seventeen or more against everyone. That's I mean, it shows you their dominance and also the state of where the a SEC is at. And this is what happens when like you could make it. Here's what's crazy. You can actually make an argument, you know, to some degree that the pack twelve throughout the conference might be as strong or maybe even a touch stronger than the A C C. You can make that argument. I don't know if it's right or not, but you can at least like try. But when you've got the dog, when you've got the alpha, it's just it's it's the trump card. I would argue that maybe the middle of the Big ten is better than the middle of the SEC. And yet when you've got the trump card, when you've got the elite team, it carries the day for the perception, say so the A c C. No one's going to talk about how the CEC is struggling and how you can really only put two teams in the top twenty five right now, maybe a third. I mean, if you kind of reach, you can put a third in there, but that definitely not now after Miami lost. But it just goes to show you how much it pays to have at least one team playing at the top. And and right now, that's what Alabama has done for the SEC and and Clemson has certainly done for for the a c C. Yeah, the analogy that I would make their Joel and we're talking to Joel Clatt. You can follow him on Twitter at Joel Clatt. You can watch him tomorrow with the f a U against Ohio State game on Big Fox Network television. That Clemson right now in the a c C is a lot like what USC was in the Pack twelve back when Pete Carroll, Matt Liner, Reggie Bush, Lyndall White were on a different level than everybody else in the conference. But you didn't talk about the Pack twelve as being a weak conference because USC was so good. And I know there were other teams that challenged them every now and then kind of blipped up on the radar. But that is what I think Clemson is doing to the a c C right now. And similar to how Clemson you could say, like quote unquote struggles with Syracuse, um USC would go to like at Washington State and and maybe you know, play a tough game or a cow and a tough game, but you weren't confusing Washington State and cow with someone that was going to do something nationally in those years. So I think it's a good analogy. UM pains me to compliment you. You're sitting there basking in the in the glow of me talking about two SEC teams in the playoffs. But that's how I got there, you asked me, So I was unlocking in what was that Wednesday? And before the segment started, you know, you were like shocked. You were like, hey, did I see that right? That you have two SEC teams in the playoffs? But I was like, yeah, yeah, I do. But Clay, it was that equation that I gave to you during the course of this interview about if you can beat all the other teams that are playing for their conference championship, whether they win those games or not, you know, with teams that are not in your conference championship. I keep going back to that Oregon is hands down one of the top two teams in the pack twelve, Auburn is maybe what six the SEC. So you know that's everyone will point to that to the rest of the season. We're talking to Joe Latin. Now you're calling the Ohio State game home opener for Ryan Day career opener as a head coach for Ryan Day at Ohio State. Justin Fields, new quarterback at Ohio State, what do you expect to see happen with Lane Kiffin bringing f A you to town? Is this going to be an interesting game in your mind? Um? I'm having a hard time to getting to that point, just because you know, Lane is having to replace a lot of guys on offense, in particular Devin Singletary, who has been outstanding over the last couple of years. Nobody's run for more touchdowns than him by a factor about twelve. I think it is Um. He's he was sensational, Um, and they were such a run heavy offense. They've got a quarterback situation that's not great. They've had a competition and just kind of settling on a guy Chris Robinson to go out there. He's doing that transferred from Oklahoma. So here's a kid who is actually sitting in the quarterback room for a spring football with Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield, and now he finds himself as kind of a fledgling quarterback at f a youth through twelve touchdowns last year twelve interceptions. Um, and they just don't quite have the juice to face a team in Ohio State that I think is an elite team talent wise. UM. I would have picked them to win the Big Ten and go to the playoff for sure if they weren't replacing Urban Meyer. I love Ryan Day. I think he's a fantastic coach. But Clay, this this sport, Our sport is still about the head coach. You know, if if the NFL is all about the quarterback, I think that college football is all about the head coach. And Urban Meyer won of his games at Ohio State and seven years they lost nine games. Nine they haven't They never lost more than two games. I mean, his success was staggering. Staggering at Ohio State when you look at his record, and he was, as you know, a personality that is the biggest personality in the room, and so that can be really tough to replace. They're trying to do that with a guy who I think is a great coach, but he's very different than Urban and they're doing that with the quarterback that transferred in that lost a quarterback battle at Georgia. So there's something that give me you know, cause for concern, But overall, the defense I think is going to be absolutely loaded. They've got new coordinators. Halfley who comes in as he was the secondary coach at San Francisco. He's a really good coach. Greg Madison moves from Michigan and now he's at Ohio State. Uh, it'll be a little bit different scheme than what you're used to watching Ohio State. But I think that they're going to be an outstanding team. I really do um And and a guy that I think might have a monster year is j K. Dobbins. They're running back. He had a great freshman season with J. C. Barrett is his quarterback. He was okay last year, ran for a thousand yards UM. It wasn't great, but a lot of that was he didn't have the threat of a quarterback run next to him. Now he's going to have that back and I think J K. Dobbins gonna have a monster year. All Right, I want to give you the larger context question for college football. If you look up at the top and there's a little bit of stuff for you to follow. I know it's early in the morning for you coming from the West coast to the east, Coast, which, by the way, you're gonna be doing every Saturday, because you're gonna be on basically every Saturday at noon. Now, is this gonna be a struggle for you to be calling games? You have to move from the West Coast. Well, no, I'm not going to move from the West Coast. I live in a bubble and I'll remain there, thank you very much. Um No, I mean it's not a struggle. And in fact, I love it because I get to watch more college football now than I would have in previous season. Uh. And I also get to get home on Saturday night. So um, this is a good schedule for me. All right, So let's go into this, all right. So Jalen Hurts is obviously gonna be starting for Oklahoma. He was previously the starting quarterback for Alabama. You've got a situation where Michigan has got their starting quarterback of Shaye Patterson was formerly the starting quarterback for Old Miss. You've got the quarterback for l s U. Joe Burrow was formerly the backup quarterback at Ohio State. The game that you're calling tonight tomorrow, sorry, tomorrow morning. Justin Fields was formerly the backup at Georgia out at Washington. You've got Jacob Eason, who was the starting quarterback there. He was previously the backup at Georgia. And you've got Kelly Bryant who used to be the starter at number one Clemson and he is now going to be the starter at Missouri. I might have missed one or two of these moving part quarterbacks, but is this you've got? You've got Brandon Wimbush at you you seef. You've got Hunter Johnson at Northwestern who came from Clemson. I mean, they're all over the place. It's crazy. So is this good for college football to have this much movement at the quarterback position? Um? You know, I actually think it is because I think it gives fan bases hope, you know that that maybe it can change quickly. Um, And think about I mean, think about what Lincoln Riley and Oklahoma have done. You know, Baker Mayfield started at Texas Tech before he came to Oklahoma. Kyler Murray played at Texas A and M before he came to Oklahoma. Now Jalen Hursts, this is their third straight transfer quarterbacks. They have not they have not started a recruited quarterback since oh gosh, now I'm totally blanking. I mean before Baker, but I don't even know who that is. That was that Landry Jones. It's good. I can't even think of the last time they did Baker be out was it? It was the guy who went to the guy went to Texas A and m Uh Trevor Knight. Trevor Knight was the last quarterback they recruited that they started at Oklahoma. Yes, you're exactly right, and they and they did it in that Sugar Bowl. And then if Trevor Knight ends up transferring to Texas A and M, they basically traded Kyler Murray for for Trevor Knight, almost right, and which I mean a bad deal for a bad deal for A and M. There um so, but it gives I guess I bring those up just because it gives the fan base, it gives a program, it gives those those people hope. Plus from an individual perspective, I've I've long argued that that it's way to one sided of a contract, the national letter of intent versus a coaches contract, and the coaches contract pays him millions of guaranteed dollars regardless of if he sucks, or if he wants to leave. Now I know that the buyouts if he wants to leave and everything, but generally, if he wants to leave, it's for more more money somewhere else, and someone else is taking care of that buy out. So again the one sidedness of the contract. If you're just looking from a legal perspective, it's what we hold the kids to. We don't come close to holding the coaches to that, which I think is wrong right now? Do I want kids transferring in the middle of the year, like, for instance, what Jake Hayner did at Washington. He's like, he loses the quarterback battle and then he's like, well, I'm gonna take my ball and leave. I I don't love that, to be honest with you, Jack Sears at USC, I don't love what they're doing and just entering the transfer portal. So I think that if we can give some elasticity and and and if we can give these players a little bit of control over their lives and of their career, that's a good thing. However, and I know this is long, but bear with me for a second. I don't love can come out the segment here. Do you have ten minutes. Yeah, I'd love to because this is actually a like a bigger point. So you're on the soapbox. I gotta get out so we get our advertising dollars. And this is out Kick. I'm Clay Travis, He's Joel Clad. Will be right back with him next on Fox Sports Radio. This is Outkicked the coverage with Clay Travis. Hay to brag, but your boy has started off five and oh in college football gambling, including three and oh last night. Really quickly, before I go back to Joel Clad, here are the picks for the weekend. Tulsa against Michigan State, Oklahoma State and the over in the Oregon State game, Syracuse Liberty, the over Ole miss Memphis, the over South Carolina North Carolina, the under Bama over Duke Northwestern Stanford, the under f a U at Ohio State. The game Joel clad is calling the over Toledo against Kentucky Mizzoo. Take him against Wyoming, Georgia and Andy. I may go to this game on the over there and the biggest game of the weekend Auburn over Oregon line now up to minus four and Houston Oklahoma the over. A lot of games there if you want them all and that went fast for you. You can go to OutKick dot com and scroll down and you'll see them all all right, Joel Klatt, finish your case about what's that five and oh? Start three and oh? Last night two and oh on college football week zero. Well, I'm hot. I mean, live a lot of nights for you to start well, but you still end up in the gutter. That's exactly right. Last night didn't start very well either. You ever had got woken up kids having nightmares? I want my One of my kids had a nightmare last night at two thirty in the morning, and I get up at four thirty and I couldn't fall back asleep. So I've just been up since to thirty, like in the middle of the night, just kind of hanging out. It's the worst, the worst. Uh, But you want to finish your your soapbox case on white coaches. If you're gonna have perpetual for the HC basically for coaches, then play your ship enough if if you don't mind. The question was about, you know, it's good for college football to have all of these quarterbacks be transfers, you know, and have played at other schools and we're going down the list of that, and I said that it is good. It's good from both the player's perspective and the fans perspective. Um the fan base gets a chance, you know, and a player has more elasticity and control over his own life and own career, which is great. I also talked about the fact that the legality of the national letter of intent and and the restraints that that puts on a person versus a coach's contract is crazy and it's totally out of balance. Now here's the one thing that I don't love about it is that the way that they've done this is the transfer portal. And the reason that I don't love the transfer portal in the season is that it gives kids an automatic out as soon as they face adversity. And as we know in life, we're all going to face a verse be at some point something's not gonna go well or not go our way. Even if it eventually ends up working out for us, we've got to go through hard times to get to those end points. You talk about it on Wins and Losses All the Time, which is a great podcast. On our episode is up. You can go check it out and Clay and I and we got right. It was a good let's say it was a good podcast. So but Clay, everybody that succeeds have to overcome something and and everybody. You think Tom Brady at one point thought at Michigan like, man, this isn't working out, you know, at one point and it's in his deepest moment. Yes, I'm sure he did. And I had that thought. Guys that succeeded to the you know, Heisman Trophy level, thoughts had that those thoughts. I'm just I'm just telling you. I hate the fact that we have a mechanism where kids can run to as soon as they face adversity. So I would say that the transfer portal should be open except for when the season is active. I would close the transfer portal as soon as you start practice and open it up on December five, the last week of the season. I don't want kids entering into this during the season. It just gives them an out and and that adversity I think needs to be faced for some of these kids in order to grow from young men too. Men. Outstanding stuff from Joel Clatten. You can watch him tomorrow twelve Eastern. He'll have the Ohio State f a you call. He'll have all the big games for Fox this year, and he will join us in the final segment of Every Friday Show, Final hour of every Friday Show. Good stuff. Have a good game tomorrow, Joel.
