Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck, ForMemRS (German: [ˈplaŋk]; English: ; 23 April 1858 – 4 October 1947) was a German theoretical physicist whose discovery of energy quanta won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918.Planck made many contributions to theoretical physics, but his fame as a physicist rests primarily on his role as the originator of quantum theory, which revolutionized human understanding of atomic and subatomic processes. In 1948 the German scientific institution Kaiser Wilhelm Society (of which Planck was twice president) was renamed max planck Society (MPS). The MPS now includes 83 institutions representing a wide range of scientific directions.
12 - La Dame du Radium
Before we move forward, let’s do a checkpoint and go back in time a little bit.
Most histories of quantum mechanics take us to Berlin in 1900 and introduce us to Max Planck. That is where the familiar story begins. Planck is struggling with blackbody radiation, the mathematics refuses to cooperate …
Quantization of Energy Part 2: Photons, Electrons, and Wave-Particle Duality
So Max Planck kicked things off, but how does the story of modern physics continue? With none other than your favorite scientist and mine, Albert Einstein! He did more than just stick his tongue out and have crazy hair. He elucidated the nature of the photoelectric effect back while working as a pa…
Quantization of Energy Part 1: Blackbody Radiation and the Ultraviolet Catastrophe
So we know that physics got turned upside down at the turn of the 20th century, but how did that all begin? What was the first thing that set this whole chain of events into motion? Well it all started with Max Planck, blackbody radiation, and the ultraviolet catastrophe. Gather round, children. Le…
Quantum Physics - a story to fall asleep to
Drift into the mysterious and enchanting world of quantum physics, where the smallest particles of nature behave in ways that challenge everything we thought we knew about reality. This episode gently guides you through the early discoveries of quantum mechanics, from the glowing puzzles of blackbo…
Pandemic Medicine: A Conversation with Prof. Kathryn Ibata-Arens on Innovation, Biodiversity and Global Health
In this episode of Medicine and the Healing Arts, hosts Profs. Michael Stanley-Baker and Ronit Yoeli-Tlalim speak with Prof. Kathryn Ibata-Arens about pandemic medicine, pharmaceutical innovation, traditional medicines and the politics of access to care.
Prof. Aarons is a political scientist whose …
#26: The Power of Play with Mary Marcolin
Meet Mary Marcolin, a teacher, psychotherapist and instinctive musician who uses music, play and human connection to help people who have experienced trauma connect with the playful child that lives within them, and begin to loosen the grip of stories that, for some, have held them hostage for much…
The Long Echo: Under Another Name
On the nineteenth of October, established systems repeatedly certified their own dismantlers. From the papal university degree that armed Martin Luther to the Berlin lecture where Max Planck quietly cracked classical physics wide open, the day traces how authority hands its challengers the exact to…
AI Swarms Are Inevitable. Is Anyone Studying Them? | Dr. Iain Couzin
AI swarms are inevitable, says Max Planck swarm scientist Dr. Iain Couzin. AI agents will coordinate on their own, and he sees no real effort to study them.
"I can absolutely assure you that it will be collective, that they will find ways to work together." (Dr. Iain Couzin)
What happens when AI …
