OM DENNE EPISODE
Welcome to another episode of When Words Fail, Music Speaks, the podcast where host James Cox—and his trusty “professional handicapped” charm—uses music as a lifeline for anyone battling depression. This week’s conversation dives deep with the unstoppable Debora Masterson—a dancer‑turned‑bassist, singer, producer, educator, and author of the newly released novel Freedom Quest.
From her early days twirling in ballet classes and learning French, to a formative stint dancing with legends like Sammy Davis Jr., Debora’s journey is a tapestry of triumphs and setbacks. She survived a tumultuous childhood, discovered her voice through movement, and finally found her instrument—electric bass—14 years ago, a choice that gave her the rhythm foundation she’d been craving since her dance years.
Together, James and Debora explore:
- The therapeutic role of music in navigating depression, procrastination, and the “silent killer” of self‑sabotage.
- The crossroads many young artists face—security versus passion—and why staying true to yourself matters more than chasing fame.
- Behind the scenes of Freedom Quest, a novel rooted in real‑life love, loss, and the 1960s‑era music scene, featuring the unforgettable Craig Ingram (Michael) and the rise and fall of the Freedom Quest Band.
- Memorable anecdotes—from sharing a kitchen with Sammy Davis Jr., a surprise encounter with Mikhail Baryshnikov, to a recent stint as a bass player in a new band that’s rekindling her love for live performance.
- A lightning‑round of favorite bass lines, dream collaborations, and the songs that make her smile, cry, and feel empowered.
Whether you’re a musician, a dreamer stuck at a desk, or simply someone searching for a soundtrack to lift your spirits, this episode offers both inspiration and practical insight. Get ready for an honest, heartfelt dialogue that proves—when words stumble—music always has something to say.
Stay tuned, hit play, and let the music speak. 🎶
