Surface Noise | Remembering Dolly Parton 1946-2026

The music world has lost one of its most beloved and influential voices. In this special episode of Surface Noise, we remember and celebrate the extraordinary life, music, and lasting legacy of Dolly Parton, who passed away at the age of 80. We reflect on Dolly Parton’s remarkable recording and film careers: the albums, movies, songs, performances, and stories that made her one of the most recognizable and enduring artists of all time.

For more than six decades, Dolly Parton was far more than a country music superstar. She was a songwriter, storyteller, recording artist, actress, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and cultural icon whose influence reached far beyond Nashville. From timeless recordings like “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You” to a catalog spanning generations, Dolly created music that became part of the fabric of American culture.

We’ll discuss the records that matter most to us, her place in country and popular music history, her extraordinary gifts as a songwriter, and the influence she leaves behind for artists and music fans alike. We’ll also look beyond the records. Dolly's legacy includes her work in film and television, Dollywood, and decades of philanthropy—most notably the Imagination Library, which has distributed hundreds of millions of books to children around the world.

Perhaps most importantly, this episode is about remembering Dolly Parton through the music. The songs we discovered. The records we collected. The performances we remember. And the unmistakable personality, humor, kindness, and humanity that made Dolly one of those rare artists who seemed to belong to everyone. Join the Surface Noise as we celebrate the records, the stories, the songs, and the incredible legacy of Dolly Parton (1946–2026).

Rest in peace, Dolly. We will always love you. ❤️
