In this episode, Nico Jend sits down with intellijend co-founder Robin Morgan to unpack how they went from two friends experimenting with music marketing to building one of the fastest-growing platforms for independent artists, and why they believe the future of music belongs to artists who take control of their own careers.
Nico shares his journey from producing music as a teenager in Vienna and running e-commerce businesses, to applying his knowledge of digital advertising to his own releases and discovering a repeatable way to grow on Spotify. What started as a personal strategy eventually became a music marketing agency, a bestselling book, and ultimately intellijend, a platform built to make professional music marketing accessible to independent artists.
They dive into what actually makes music grow in 2026, and why creating great music is only part of the equation. Nico explains how Spotify algorithms, Meta ads, release strategies, and creative testing work together to build sustainable momentum, and why artists shouldn't have to depend on record labels, playlist placements, or viral TikTok moments to reach new listeners.
The conversation goes deep into one of the biggest challenges facing independent musicians today: content creation. With social media algorithms increasingly favoring highly entertaining, viral content, getting discovered through traditional artist posts has become harder than ever. Nico breaks down the difference between content that builds a personal brand and content that actually drives music discovery, why some of the simplest videos outperform expensive productions, and how artists can use data to understand what works.
They also introduce viryl, the next chapter in their mission to simplify music marketing. Built from years of experience running campaigns across thousands of artists, viryl is designed to solve the creative bottleneck by helping musicians discover footage, create music videos and ad creatives, synchronize visuals to their tracks, and test different approaches without spending hours editing or constantly filming themselves.
Beyond the tools, Robin and Nico explore the bigger picture of the music industry. From AI-generated music and the growing importance of authentic artist communities, to the limitations of Spotify's streaming model and the future of direct-to-fan relationships, they discuss why the traditional industry structure is becoming increasingly outdated and what could replace it.
Nico also shares his perspective on the entrepreneurial side of being an artist. Why musicians need to understand the business behind their careers, why giving away ownership too early can be a costly mistake, and why the most successful independent artists approach releases, marketing, and audience-building as a long-term investment rather than gambling everything on one song.
At its core, this episode is about independence: understanding how the music industry actually works, taking ownership of your growth, and using technology to eliminate the repetitive work that keeps artists from focusing on what matters most, making music and building genuine connections with fans.
If you're an independent artist trying to figure out Spotify growth, content creation, music advertising, or how to build a sustainable career without relying on a record label, this conversation offers a behind-the-scenes look at the strategies, lessons, and tools shaping the next generation of independent music.
