Maximize Your Team’s Effectiveness - Dave Rendall - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 051

Today’s guest has spoken to audiences on every inhabited continent over the past 15 years. He has worked with the US Air Force, the Australian government, and Fortune 500 companies such as Microsoft, AT&T, United Health Group, Fannie Mae, and State Farm Insurance. Prior to becoming a Certified Speaking Professional, he was a leadership professor and stand-up comedian. In between presentations, he competes in ultramarathons and Ironman triathlons. He is the author of four books, Pink Goldfish, The Four Factors of Effective Leadership, The Freak Factor, and The Freak Factor for Kids. Dave Rendall is the Keynote Speaker and MC at The Freak Factory. Dave shares the trap leaders put themselves in by thinking they can change people, why you need to lean into your best traits, and some great tips on parenting as an entrepreneur.

Takeaways:

• Leadership is not about turning someone into something they aren’t. In reality, most people don’t change that much, even when desperate. You can’t teach someone to be passionate about something and want to do it.
• Leadership is really about understanding who a person is, what they are, and what roles and responsibilities you can help them find that will maximize their effectiveness.
• To gain a deeper understanding of your employees, first, have conversations with them about what they like and don’t like. Second, pay attention to the nuances of how they work in different situations as this can provide a more accurate account of themselves.
• Learn how you interact with others by taking personal assessments such as Kolbe, DISC, Myers-Briggs (MBTI), Strengthsfinder, and Enneagram. These will also highlight areas where you need to be conscientious and self-aware when working with a team.
• Just because your child does things differently than you does not mean that they are doing it wrong or that you need to force them to do it their way. As entrepreneurs, you should be the most thrilled to see your child innovating and iterating their life.
• If you keep hearing that you are “too” this or that, it probably means that you’re in the wrong spot. Find an opportunity that allows you to tap into who you really are and what you already do naturally.

Quote of the Show:

• “Most of leadership is about understanding who people are, working with what they are, not trying to turn them into something else, and trying to help them find situations that maximize their effectiveness.” - Dave Rendall
