He politely declines, explaining that he has yet to settle into Paris after his arrival, though he graciously accepts the promise of a future visit. Albert then offers his own carriage, but Monte Cristo expresses confidence that his servant has already made the necessary arrangements.

The first meeting ends with perfect courtesy and carefully observed formalities.
