Why Being Busy Is Keeping You Stuck | Tia Cristy
What if constantly staying busy isn't moving you forward—it's actually keeping you stuck?
In Episode #60 of The Common Ground Podcast, returning guest Tia Cristy, communication expert, speaker, and media personality, joins Philly and Sydney Nicole for a conversation about burnout, productivity, communication, stillness, technology, overthinking, and the power of the pause.
We live in a culture that often treats exhaustion like an accomplishment. Packed schedules, immediate responses, nonstop notifications, long workdays, and always having something to do can make us feel productive—even when we're simply spinning in circles.
Sydney describes it as a culture that has “mistaken burnout for ambition,” while Tia explains that people can become addicted to movement itself. We fear that if we slow down, we'll lose momentum, fall behind, or appear lazy. But being busy doesn't necessarily mean you're making progress.
Tia calls this “the power of the pause.”
Silence can feel uncomfortable, especially during difficult conversations. But instead of immediately responding, defending ourselves, or filling every second with words, a pause gives us an opportunity to listen, process, observe, and connect.
As Tia explains, when people become defensive, they can stop truly listening. Learning to pause before reacting can change the direction of a conversation—and potentially prevent us from saying or doing something we can't take back.
The conversation also explores how technology and instant gratification have made stillness increasingly difficult. From the moment we wake up, we're surrounded by phones, notifications, social media, music, messages, work, and constant stimulation. Tia argues that we need to intentionally create opportunities to disconnect rather than expecting silence to simply happen.
🎙️ In this episode, we discuss:

• Burnout vs. ambition
• The power of silence in communication
• Listening to understand instead of listening to respond
• Why we're uncomfortable being still
• Technology, social media, and constant stimulation
• Overthinking and learning to quiet mental noise
• Healthy vs. unhealthy stillness
• Meditation and creating space to decompress
• Validation—and whose opinions actually matter
• Why slowing down doesn't mean losing your ambition
• Faith and the biblical concept of “be still”
• Reacting vs. responding
• Why some problems don't require an immediate answer
• Creating intentional moments of rest
• Learning to recognize when you're simply spinning in circles
Near the end of the conversation, Tia gives a practical test for those moments when everything feels urgent.
Ask yourself: Is this actually an emergency? Is someone in danger? Will moving faster improve the situation—or could slowing down prevent me from making it worse?
Her advice:
“Take the pause.”
This isn't about becoming passive, abandoning ambition, or doing nothing. It's about becoming intentional enough to know when to move and when to stop.
Stillness can create space to think, listen, pray, process, recover, reconnect, and recognize what's happening around you before deciding where to go next.
And Tia leaves listeners with one of the most important messages of the episode:
“There is no shame in the stillness. Stillness is not a bad thing. Stillness is a great thing.”
