Derek: ⁓
Justin: Hear ye, hear ye. It's me No No You guys ruined the intro Whatever ⁓ it Hello My name is Justin aka ⁓ first of his name ruler of the seven kingdoms of still scrolling I am your blackest knight of host Justin
Derek: Justin didn't watch Pokemon. But Digimon.
Stefania: Justin wasn't allowed to watch Pokemon as a kid.
Derek: ⁓ do it now, go. Do it a cappella, go. You're you're Valar Valerian Valarion. How do you say that? No no I that's what I'm saying, you are. You're you're Coreless. You're Corless Valerian.
Justin: You can't be the Valerians, they're the black people. I ⁓ so you just see a black person in the show, you think I'm you know what? Cancelled. Canceled. Anyway. No, I don't I ⁓
Derek: Correct. Correct. You look like his son. You look like ⁓ Yeah. You look like both sons actually. You look like all of them actually.
Justin: You know what? Cancelled. This is like this is like saying this is like saying Derek looks like Pedro Pascal. It's not happening.
Stefania: He he can't he can't tell you apart.
yourtvgirl: you
Derek: Yeah. Anyway Anyway, I would be lucky to look like Pedro Pascal. I'm unfortunately not. I'm Derek, your your other host. That's not Justin or Stefania.
Stefania: And I'm I'm Stefania who's not Derek or Justin. I d listen, I don't I don't watch House of the Dragon, so I'm very like black sheep today. No, dude, we went over this. We went over this like years ago.
Justin: That's it. That's no fancy titles.
Derek: We did it. ⁓ my god.
Justin: You didn't watch House of the Dragon? Steph! ⁓ my gosh. Okay. You know what? Alright, I'm gonna have to make some calls. We have to call in the big gun. Since Steph hasn't watched House of the Dragon, we had to get an expert. We called the amazing, the incredible, unbelievable, undeniable. Alex from your TV Girl, welcome to the show!
Derek: No, she hasn't e seen anything. Yeah.
yourtvgirl: Hello, hello, yes, I'm here to slander it honestly Steph. I think you're you made the right call just not watching it So I applaud you. I applaud you. Yeah, I do Yeah
Stefania: Good, good snow. Thank you. I you know what, I love being a girls girl, so like thank you so much.
Justin: ⁓ my gosh.
yourtvgirl: ⁓ you're welcome. Absolutely. Absolutely.
Derek: Woke. Woke.
Justin: ⁓ still scrolling now has gone woke. Now ⁓ gosh. Anyways, we have so much to talk about. Yes, we're going to be covering ⁓ House of the Dragons season three, episode one for the last part of this podcast. So keep tuned in for that. Before that, we do have a couple of stories to get through, like the reflecting pool, some new sunglasses and Jay-Z and Supergirl and all that good stuff. But let's start up with the top. ⁓
Derek: Yep. Stefania. Stefania right now made it look.
yourtvgirl: you
Justin: Have you guys been to Washington D C and have you dipped your toes in the reflecting pool?
yourtvgirl: Well, I won't say I've dipped my toes, because I don't want to. It's disgusting. Have you seen? It's just bad. It's just bad.
Derek: ⁓
Justin: Yeah, okay. ⁓ it used to be not disgusting, but now it is very disgusting because ⁓ Trump hired his buddy from landscaping business, not the total landscaping guys, but they added a new kind of like water filtration system that's literally destroying the famous Washington DC monument known as the Reflecting Pool. It used to be a bright blue. They thought it'd be a good idea to go in, paint it, replace the water source.
Stefania: Yeah, yeah.
Justin: And the filters aren't working. It's so bad that you can literally cut pieces off the reflecting pool. It's kind of disgusting. Trump did say that vandals are like tearing it up, but like it's not good. Derek, what do you think about this?
yourtvgirl: Mm.
Derek: I think it's just a perfect piece of ⁓ I guess this is a perfect representation of everything that Trump does. You go in, you spend a bunch of money on something that is questionable as to whether you should even be spending the money, you do it wrong, and then you blame everyone else when it backfires ⁓ immensely. So the the funniest part of all of this is the paint to me, because the paint was supposed to like make it bluer, right? It's very much like him putting gold ornaments on everything, right? they made it bluer and then because of the way that science works, the blue paint actually keeps the heat in there more instead of allowing it to reflect the way that the old ⁓ like white bottom looked. So the algae growth, the blooms like intensified. So now it's a shit show, regardless of whether they they they added a new filter system or whatever, it's still ⁓ the algae was still gonna be there because of the blue paint. So as a solution to the algae, they put in hydrogen peroxide ⁓ to try and kill the algae, but then the hydrogen peroxide is stripping the blue paint and now it's coming off in sheets, and that's what people are are going and taking off of ⁓ the from the bottom of the pool is just the blue paint. of it. And then there's also like a a dead baby duck in there at some point one of these days. Yeah. Yeah. It's y well, I mean, did they? But yeah, they did. They they killed a baby duck. And ⁓ again, this is just a a a I I I I hesitate to say exquisite because it's so frustrating and stupid, but it's a perfect metaphor for
Justin: N nasty. What? They killed
Stefania: ⁓ What?
yourtvgirl: water so toxic.
Justin: Gunash.
Derek: everything this man has done to the country.
Justin: Dang, Steph, I know you weren't here last week because you were the one repainting the reflecting pool. So ⁓ give us some boots on the ground journalism on how that went.
yourtvgirl: So.
Stefania: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah. They they called me in. I couldn't Boots on the Ground journalism, yeah. Yeah. ⁓ I I do wanna say I also love the fact that not only the the the bottom of it is peeling, but around the pool is just brown patches of grass. Like that's not even kept up. Like it it just looks the whole thing just looks like a shit show. I mean you couldn't even like Yeah.
yourtvgirl: It's just an accurate representation of the country. It just is.
Stefania: Yeah, like some simple landscaping you guys couldn't do to fix the the grass around it. Like it already looks like shit with a pool. At least make it look nice with the grass.
Justin: Lex, what do you think?
yourtvgirl: It was a $14 million scam job. There's no way they actually spent 14 mil on that. And if you look at the guy they hired to do the job, he looks like the guy that would have put out a kill on Tony Soprano. And he had never, he never, ever, ever even had a government contract. So when you look at people that had government contracts for up keeps on specific things like this that knew what they were doing.
Justin: Ha ha ha.
yourtvgirl: probably wouldn't have cost $14 million. They're just funneling this money. Or Trump owed him money and just threw it at him. Like, had the country pay him. Like, realistically, please look him up. You have to see him. I'm not even joking. He's definitely in the mafia. He's in the mafia.
Justin: Okay, let's look at
Derek: Yeah, put him on screen. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I think he looks like the dude, ⁓ I forget his name from WWF that would hold the Undertaker's urn when the Undertaker would come out. And look, they say don't judge a book by its cover. But when it comes to this dude, I think that I think that's it's okay to j to judge a book by its cover. You see this man and you cannot tell me that
Stefania: Yeah, look ⁓ up.
yourtvgirl: I'm
Justin: ⁓ no. ⁓ no.
yourtvgirl: Yeah.
Derek: This guy's not up to some shit all the time, right? To varying degrees of nefariousness.
Justin: I I tell a
yourtvgirl: Yeah, I'm telling you, he, that's the guy who killed Tony Soprano. That's the guy. That's the guy.
Stefania: That is that's a cartoon character. That is a cartoon character right there. That can't be real.
Justin: Ha
Derek: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There's there's worse pictures too. That's a better that's a better one of the photos of of the dude.
Justin: Listen, listen. Okay.
yourtvgirl: I just love that we spent $14 million of taxpayer money on this and Trump was like, this will easily last 50 to 100 years. ⁓ It didn't even last six months, bro.
Justin: Didn't even let Okay, I'm not going to ugly shame this man. Cause
yourtvgirl: No, I'm not either. No, no, no. He's I'm not he's just in the mafia. It's not ugly shaming
Derek: No, no, it's okay. It's okay. You can ugly No, you can ugly shame people. You can ugly shame people if they're ugly in their hearts as well. So it's fair game here.
Stefania: No, come on. Come on.
yourtvgirl: Mmm. Mmm.
Stefania: Hmm. Yeah, you're right. You're so right.
Justin: Ha ha.
Derek: You know? So don't judge a book by its cover. Don't ugly shame people, right? Unless they deserve it. So this guy looks like the fucking guy from WWF that holds the Undertaker's urn. Okay? That's a very special
yourtvgirl: We need a visual. We need a visual on that. Yeah, we need a visual. Niche. Computer? You weren't allowed to watch wrestling? But you could watch Dragon Ball Z? I don't... Wrestling isn't even real! They don't even hit each other.
Stefania: You gotta look that up now 'cause I don't know what he looks like. Yeah. Yeah. Computer, computer, look up, look up. Computer?
Derek: Yeah. Yeah. It's a very specific nineties.
Justin: Undertaker Urn I wasn't allowed to watch wrestling.
Derek: I think it's like Paul Heyman. No.
Justin: I wasn't allowed to watch it. Look, I don't make the rules.
Stefania: Ha ha ha.
Derek: Listen, Attitude Era though. No, Attitude Era was w that the well no, he wasn't y he's younger. He's younger than us. So he would have grown up already when it was sanitized a little bit. ⁓
yourtvgirl: ⁓
Stefania: Mm.
Justin: Wait, Lex, how old are you?
yourtvgirl: when the I'm 32 I watched when like the Hardy boys were on I went to see it like you don't understand I craved violence as a child and so my parents took me to see it live and do you know how angry I got when I looked at them and I realized that the hits weren't landing I literally went to my mom and I was like this is fake and she was like honey they're actors and I was like oh I immediately I was like I want to go home like I was like oh all right we're not we're not fighting
Justin: ⁓
Derek: There you go. That's the guy.
Stefania: literally him. That's him. Dude dude went to his his ⁓ barber and was like, yo, gimme the Undertaker earn haircut
yourtvgirl: That is him. Wow. Wow.
Derek: There you go. That's the guy. That's the guy. That's the guy who renovated the pool the reflecting pool.
Justin: Listen, listen.
yourtvgirl: That's literally him. That's literally him. That's like an incredible reference.
Justin: Listen, you know what? Good for him. Good for him. I'm I'm glad that he's living his dream. I'm glad he found work elsewhere. ⁓ speaking of finding work elsewhere, ⁓ Snapchat brought but Snapchat announced some brand new AR glasses that is not their first attempt at air glasses. If you guys remember Snapchat spectacles.
Stefania: ⁓ my god.
Derek: Good for him. You know, he found work elsewhere after the
Stefania: Yeah.
Justin: When you could wear glasses and use Snapchat at the same time. People were wanting that all the time. But the industry has boomed a little bit with Apple kind of taking over the wearable headset things and all that stuff. It did is it a flo well, we'll talk about it. ⁓ let's start off with Lex. What did you did you get a chance to see these new
Derek: And if laptop.
Justin: glasses and what do you think? Let me pull them up on the screen so you guys can see.
yourtvgirl: I haven't seen them.
Justin: They're interesting.
yourtvgirl: Okay, so we're going for like very 70s, like big blocky, okay? Like they could look cool. ⁓ Speaking of 25th anniversary of Ocean's 11 was last week. niche weird things I would know. Yeah, I don't love them. I just, like we're really late stage capitalism is so fun because we're coming out with just the dumbest shit at this point.
Derek: Yeah, no, but hold on. Yeah, very Oceans Eleven Rubin.
Justin: Very well.
Stefania: Mm-hmm.
Derek: Yeah. Pull up the picture of the CEO wearing them though.
yourtvgirl: We just are, so that's fun. Yeah, let me see him on a person.
Justin: The CEO? Okay, here is a better look at them overall, but let me spec glasses CE.
yourtvgirl: ⁓ my gosh, wow, the side view.
Stefania: Are those those look like buttons on the side.
Justin: It's
Derek: They pr they might be. Yeah. Huh? Yeah. It's worth mentioning it's worth mentioning the marketing so far has included Jack Harlow and Jimmy Butler. So, you know, maybe they're maybe they're ⁓ running out of budget, so to speak, when it comes to this. This is what it Wow Yeah. Mm hmm.
Justin: It's interesting. It's d try to mean ⁓ fair.
Stefania: Yeah. ⁓
yourtvgirl: ⁓ wha-
Stefania: No
yourtvgirl: Wait, I wanna see Jimmy Butler in them because listen, I'm a Chicago girl. I lived there for 10 years. So like Jimmy G. Buckets, he played for the Bulls. I love him. ⁓ But I don't know. If anyone could make it cool, it might be him, but I'm not, mm-mm. I bet.
Justin: Left.
Derek: It looks better on them. It looks better on them. But this photo, but this photo of the CEO wearing them is probably a more accurate photo of how it would look on people. Cause it doesn't have the camera lenses and the angles and the editing. ⁓ and then the latest update to all of this is that they're negotiating with Robert Downey Junior to ⁓ to wear the glasses. So
yourtvgirl: Yeah. I literally knew that Jimmy Butler would make it look cool. I literally knew. Yeah.
Derek: Yeah, it looks better on him. It looks better on him. Still kinda goofy though, but when you're a celebrity, when you're a celebrity, you get away with this kind of stuff. A normal person can't get away with this.
Stefania: Mm-hmm.
yourtvgirl: there.
Justin: Here's the problem. Here's the problem. Anyone who wants to buy these glasses is not cool. I'm not saying the product is not cool. I'm not saying the product is not cool. I'm saying that anyone who buys them, like the people that the type of person that would buy this is not cool. Like it's it's not.
Stefania: Yeah.
yourtvgirl: Ooh, hot take!
Derek: Yeah. Yeah, but Justin, what you what you don't understand is what you don't understand is if you could if you could communicate the product, then you could sell the product, right? I like some of the Gaga songs, okay?
yourtvgirl: Ugh.
Justin: Look at this. Look at this.
Stefania: Look at
Justin: Look at this. What the fuck is this? Are we kidding right now? Are we joking? It's
Derek: Yeah. Yeah, this is ridiculous. This is ridiculous. This is ridiculous.
Stefania: Can can I just say can I just say that yesterday I saw a commercial for Kylie Jenner meta glasses. And you know the meta glasses are much like thinner or whatever, they're more wearable. But the fact that I saw that yesterday and now you come here and show me these Snapchat glasses, like w honestly, you can't really compete with the meta. They one, the meta actually look better and you can do a lot more with them, I feel like. These are like thick goggles you'd wear in a lab.
Derek: Yeah. ⁓ yeah.
yourtvgirl: ⁓ my God.
Stefania: Like they don't look right.
Justin: Any but it doesn't matter because the type of person that wants to be always recording every interaction is weird is weird, you know. Not me, not me, I'm not buying this, not me
Derek: Well h hold on, here's the thing.
Stefania: Alright, so Justin, when are you putting in your pre order?
Derek: Yo, sh she jumped on that. She jumped on that. So so real quick, the meta there is a big difference between the meta glasses and these Snapchat ones. The Snapchat ones are full AR. So it's like having you could see shit on in like like how the Vision Pros are, like how the the the you know, you could watch a movie, you could play a game, you could bring up your your text messages and and you could do that kind of stuff with these glasses. Right? The meta glasses.
yourtvgirl: There's no way it actually functions properly. There's just no way. There's no way.
Derek: Correct. That's one. That's one. There's no way. Exactly. That's one. Two, just use your phone. Just use your phone. You don't need to spend two grand for this, right? Don't sell don't try yeah, right. Yes, two grand. So I have a theory. I have a prediction. I know that Justin is usually the prediction guy here, right? But I think that a year from now, maybe a little bit longer, Snapchat will be gone. It will be bankrupt. Because
Justin: It won't work.
Stefania: Yeah.
yourtvgirl: Yeah.
Stefania: Two grand.
yourtvgirl: Put a chip in my head at that point.
Justin: Yeah.
yourtvgirl: Yeah. Yeah.
Justin: Whoa.
Derek: Because they're throwing all this money into this, into these glasses. Their target demographic is, let's be honest, under eighteen, right? They can't legally collect the data on those users, but you know, they're marketing to kids, right? Or to like eighteen to twenty four, ⁓ which is like the demographic with the least amount of disposable income. And they're they're selling them twenty one hundred dollar glasses and they're they're offering Robert Downey Junior millions of dollars in stock.
yourtvgirl: You
Justin: Yeah.
Derek: They've got a celebrity roster of people wearing it to make it look cooler than it actually is, offer something that, you know, is going to replace your phone, but not really. It's just gonna put your phone in front of your eyeballs. And that's not the way real life works. We can't do that. You can't wear these functionally and and and live your life the way you need to, right? ⁓ so these are gonna be a huge flop for sure. And I think Snapchat's going to to be gone for real this time. 'Cause this caught me by surprise. I was like, What do mean Snapchat is making this? It's Snapchat's still around. I think in a year it actually won't be around. Because apparently they've also they've been doing this. This isn't their first AR glasses. They've been trying to push this for a while. This was just the first one to actually get some attention. This latest model. So
Justin: Still here. Yeah. Yeah. Dang.
yourtvgirl: have a follow-up question though, all right? Based on your prediction. ⁓ If Snapchat goes, or when Snapchat goes bankrupt, who's gonna buy them? Meta, is it gonna be the people, you know, like who's gonna buy them? Who's, Bezos?
Derek: It's it's gonna be f fucking Elon Musk probably and he's gonna be like and he's gonna be li I mean, who knows? You know. Honestly I don't care at this point.
Stefania: Probably. Yeah.
Justin: He doesn't have the cash flow anymore. I don't think so.
yourtvgirl: ⁓ this isn't fun now. I regret asking.
Stefania: But you know you know what's gonna happen is that everyone's gonna be like, ⁓ all my Snapchat memories, like they're gonna be gone forever. I need to save them. And then somebody's gonna step up to the plane and be like, I'm actually gonna buy Snapchat, and it'll be Elon Musk or whatever. You know, like everyone's gonna be like, My memories, how are we gonna get them? ⁓ because honestly, coming from somebody who Yes, because Yep. Coming from someone who has so many Snapchat memories from like all throughout high school and like through college
yourtvgirl: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Derek: Yeah.
yourtvgirl: But then he's gonna charge people. He'll charge people for the memories.
Stefania: I sometimes look back at those and I'm like, Yeah, these are pretty funny videos. I would hate to lose So
Derek: You're so young.
Justin: Ha ha ha.
yourtvgirl: Yeah, wait, let's age check you both. I need to age check you both. Because I know Derek and I are in our 30s. Steph, how old are you? Okay, okay. Justin?
Derek: Yeah.
Justin: Yeah.
Stefania: Hm. Okay. Yeah. I'm twenty six.
Derek: Yeah. It feels sh it feels like she's younger than sh than she actually is.
Justin: Guess ⁓ I'm thirty one.
Stefania: Yeah. I have two millennial brothers, by the way. I'm the youngest.
yourtvgirl: 31, okay, okay, it's just, stuff is just the young blood in here. Okay, but 26 isn't too bad, 26 isn't too bad. No.
Stefania: Yeah. No, no, I I grew up I grew up like a zelennial 'cause my older brothers are millennial and I'm the youngest, so everything was handed down to me.
yourtvgirl: Mm-hmm.
Derek: Yeah, yeah. You you got a good education from them. They did a good job. Let them know. Okay. Yeah. D you don't you probably don't stare at people like when you you go to place your order and you're you're they're just like
Stefania: Mm-hmm.
yourtvgirl: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Justin: Steph Steph wasn't there for nine eleven too, so it's like a whole thing.
Stefania: He was one year old.
Justin: Yeah.
yourtvgirl: ⁓
Derek: Yeah, you were one year old when Robert Pattinson was in one of the towers at the end of that movie. Yeah.
yourtvgirl: Remember me. Remember me. Yeah. Wow.
Stefania: ⁓ I still have to watch that. I still have to watch that. Yeah yeah yeah.
Justin: ⁓ my gosh. Guys, we gotta keep it moving. We still have to talk about House of the Dragon at the end of this.
Derek: Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, anyway.
Justin: Alright. ⁓ Steph wasn't here last week because Steph went to a planet with a red sun so she can get ⁓ drinks with James Gunn. ⁓ You Supergirl before any of us, ⁓ right? not spoil it because most of us are seeing it later this week. ⁓ But us the one minute version.
Stefania: Mm hmm. I did.
Justin: of your review of Supergirl. Ready? Set go.
Stefania: So Supergirl, very different tonality from Superman, I will say. and I don't say that as like a bad thing. It's actually a pretty great thing because you you think of where Superman came from and how he ended up in the end of the movie, and then you think about where Supergirl is coming from and how she ends up. It's very different, coming from different backgrounds. I they adapted Woman of Tomorrow. And I believe they did change some stuff in that comic, but overall it's gotten pretty positive reviews. It's a very like women focused movie and just battling the the ⁓ I guess pressure of being this figure for for people for girls too. ⁓ because one of the things is she's trying to save these young Brides, you know, from being forced to procreate. and I I'm gonna keep on going off this. I'm gonna keep on going on this because ⁓ yes. No, no, no, I'm not spoiling it. I just I just said I just said like what what like her goal is. ⁓ but yeah, I I'd say it was a really good movie, really fun movie. ⁓ and Lobo looked pretty good. I I think this was a great casting for Lobo.
Justin: Time. That's your time. Wait no, you're spoiling the movie. You're spoiling it
Derek: Pararara.
Justin: ⁓ we should've played the Jeopardy music. Interesting. Better than the trailer.
Stefania: I would say w the experience of watching it is better than than the trailer. It's a very simple supergirl story. I let me tell you right now, I'm not going in saying like this is the best thing ever. It's a very simple supergirl story. I mean they're adapting Woman of Tomorrow, so
Justin: Interesting.
Derek: Okay. That's fine. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Justin: Okay. Alright. I'm excited to see it. Well
yourtvgirl: I think simplicity is a strength though. Yeah.
Stefania: It is a strength. Especially for like a female led movie. ⁓ a lot of people think like I there's gonna there's already people talking about like, ⁓ but this is just so basic. It's this is you know, Supergirl is she d barely did anything, blah blah blah. ⁓ but no, Supergirl being stronger than Superman, canonically, she still has stuff that can take her down. She's not like OP superior. There's still things that can take her down. Kryptonite is still a thing, it still affects her. ⁓ so It's just a fun supergirl movie that that moves along the story of where the D C universe is going.
Justin: Interesting. Okay, so it's important you ha like it's not skippable.
yourtvgirl: Good.
Stefania: No, I wouldn't skip it.
Justin: All right, okay. We will come back next week with all of our reviews of Supergirl and we'll have all our thoughts and you get to tell us how you met James Gunn.
Stefania: I did not meet James Gunn, I met Peter Saffron though, ⁓ at the after party.
yourtvgirl: Same thing the co-creator well, that's still insane Your lore. I love your lore
Justin: ⁓ the one that less people care about.
Stefania: Yeah, I met Peter Saffron. ⁓ I talked with him about the movie and just, you know, say whole congrats and stuff. He was super nice. So I I had gone up to him with my friend. He was the one to initiate a handshake, which is I respect so much, because I'm like, ⁓ I'm in the I'm just a small girl. and he was very enthusiastic about the film, always smiling, very positive, very happy to talk about it, and he was super, super nice. ⁓
Justin: Yeah.
Stefania: I also had mentioned, because I had to throw out there, ⁓ that I just did my first movie, my first indie movie. ⁓ because I'm gonna promote myself, of course. And ⁓ so the height requirement unfortunately is way too steep for me. ⁓ but Amazonian, anything, I'll stand on Apple Box, right? and
Justin: So you're gonna be Wonder Woman?
yourtvgirl: Yeah.
Justin: ⁓
Stefania: I told him, yeah, I did my first indie movie. It was this very small thing, like little to no budget kind of thing. And he's like, Those are the best movies to work on though, because you can literally have so much fun ⁓ doing ⁓ with no rules behind you. I mean they're you ⁓ you make rules, you know, with everyone on set. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. I'm ⁓ he all he said, studio rules, all he said was they're very fun movies to make because you have the
Justin: Is Peter Saffron anti Union? What? Whoa whoa woah
yourtvgirl: you
Derek: Studio studio rules, bro.
yourtvgirl: Studio rules.
Stefania: choice yourself as a director to make the choices that you want. You don't have to follow a producer, head of a a company, ⁓ that tells you what to do. And I said, Yeah, I had this is literally like the most fun I've had just being on set for anything. So
Justin: Invad him on the part.
Stefania: ⁓ yeah, I we exchange numbers, I'ma I'ma text ⁓ and I'll be like, Hey, we differ contact yo, don't be starting rumors, Justin. Don't be starting rumors, Justin.
Justin: Hey yo, what?
Derek: Like yo, you up?
Justin: Listen, listen, listen, you're the one that said it on the pod. I'm just saying. Anyways.
Stefania: people add Peter Saffron's number for business reasons.
Justin: Hey yo, peek it's around. Interesting. Okay. ⁓ we'll talk about that more next
Derek: Anyway.
Stefania: You know who else was at the after party? ⁓ James Gunn's wife, I forgot her name. Yeah. I yes, I didn't I didn't get to meet her. She's so short though. ⁓ my god. She's like much smaller than I thought. ⁓ and Millie was there, but I didn't see her 'cause Millie she is very introverted. ⁓ so she won't stay long at a function like that. ⁓ which I totally get 'cause it's a lot of people overwhelming, whatever. ⁓ at one point I did get a little bit overwhelmed in my surroundings, so
Justin: Hardcore.
yourtvgirl: Oh my god! I love her!
Justin: Very short.
yourtvgirl: makes sense.
Stefania: ⁓ but I didn't get to see her and who else showed up? David didn't show up. I was really hoping David showed up and James Gunn 'cause I wanted to I wanted to tell James Gunn about the movie and something specific about the movie that I did. ⁓ that he would totally appreciate. But I'ma save that, I guess.
yourtvgirl: Mm.
Justin: ⁓ save it for next DC whatever happens. ⁓ but sp
Stefania: Man of tomorrow. Not man of tomorrow. ⁓ Is it Man of Tomorrow? Okay. Yeah.
yourtvgirl: Lanterns? Lanterns? I mean lanterns, the show is next isn't it? September? think? Lanterns.
Justin: Yeah. Superman Man Smarrow. Isn't that the next one?
Derek: Yes.
Justin: ⁓ right, lanterns. Get your military greens out for that one. Anyways, we'll talk about that more next time. But now we have to talk about, I think ⁓ probably my favorite part of the show, we have to open up a special viewers unit.
Stefania: ⁓ yeah.
yourtvgirl: Yeah.
Justin: Still scrolling, SVU. It's the part of the show where we spoil and dive deep into things that we are watching. And today we're going to be talking about House of the Dragon, Season 3, Episode 1. Before we get started, we will be spoiling all of the House of the Dragon, probably all of Game of Thrones, all of Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. So if you haven't watched them, you might be spoiled. But this Sunday was the season premiere of season three of episode one. We got an expert to talk about this and I'm so excited to talk about this. But before we start, can we get a temperature check on how we feel about see this premiere and House of the Dragon overall with a thumbs up, thumbs down on three. Ready? ⁓ dang, lax! Okay, alright. Three, two, one.
yourtvgirl: can't, I can't, I can't hold back. I can't hold back.
Stefania: I don't know.
Justin: Really? Y'all are haters! Okay, are Okay, interesting. Alright, I'm going to ceremoniously ⁓ let you have my soapbox, Lex. Here you go.
Derek: I don't know yet. I don't know yet. I don't know yet.
yourtvgirl: Hmm, you're gonna regret that. ⁓ First of all, I wanna start this by saying if you like the show, which you put a thumbs up, okay, questionable, I've just met you and already like I have thoughts about you, it's fine. ⁓ But it's fine. If you like the show, I recommend reading the source material because it is leaps and bounds significantly better than anything HBO has ever done with anything George has ever written. ⁓
Justin: Tell us.
yourtvgirl: Now they get away with a lot in House of the Dragon because when you read this, it's basically like, imagine if someone for the times, like we lose all our technology, let's say, and people start transcribing what is in like blind items and TMZ and they put it in here and then they take accounts from people that actually live things. That's pretty much what this book is, Fire and Blood, which is what House of the Dragon is based off of. So that's why they get away with certain liberties, but like, They take too many liberties. They've done too much that this is like, it's truly character assassination all around. Like all around for everybody. ⁓ So as you can see, we've annotated. I take this very seriously, okay? My culture is not your costume, right? So we've got tabs.
Justin: Hay
Derek: Ha ha ha.
Stefania: Ha ha
yourtvgirl: We've got tabs, we've got chapter summaries. Like this is the level of care and love you put into a George R. R. Martin book. Am I putting this into a Bridger & Bitton book? No, okay. That being said, I can recognize when changes are made that I think are better. It's just they're not making those. So, ⁓ like.
Derek: Nerd nerd ⁓
Justin: Ha ha ha
yourtvgirl: For example, Bridgerton is a great example. I would say the show in a lot of ways is more interesting than the books. It adds more like nuance, right? Like I can recognize when a book adaptation isn't that good or is better than the source material, but I don't know. ⁓ How's the Dragon? Sorry, I'm rambling now. Anyway, let's go into the episode. I took notes. So let's see, off rip.
Justin: Okay, ⁓ let's hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. ⁓ gosh. ⁓ let's ⁓ let's get Steph and Derek's opinion on ⁓ this premiere. Just temperature check. I okay, I I enjoyed this premiere episode. I thought it was perfectly fine. For context, the only Game of Thrones book that I've read.
yourtvgirl: Okay, my bad.
Stefania: Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. ⁓
Derek: Why, why, why, why why?
yourtvgirl: Yeah.
Stefania: You don't need my opinion. ⁓
Derek: Yeah. Stefania, what do you think?
Justin: The first one, Game of Thrones, and Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. I read the two novellas of Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. I haven't read the third because I'm waiting for the next season to like, you know, ⁓ come out. But I I've really enjoyed those books. I love Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and I really enjoyed the first Game of Thrones books. However, I recognize that the first Game of Thrones book, it's extremely accurate to the television show and down to the like bar for bar, lines for lines.
yourtvgirl: That one, yeah.
Justin: ⁓ but when it comes to House of the Dragon, I have not read Fire and Blood. For the most part, I really enjoy House of the Dragon. I I think it's a fun show. I I I love watching these characters and although they may be frustrating, it's not really a a ⁓ a commentary on the my frustration isn't coming from the writing. It's more on the characters themselves within the story. Of like, I understand why these characters make the decisions that they make. ⁓ and to me that's an interesting story to see how the how it plays out. So I I'm having a good time. I'm I'm enjoying it. I l I like it. I don't know what to say.
Derek: Why don't you come down here and say that to her face?
Justin: No, I might get Dracarist. I don't know.
Derek: She I wouldn't be surprised. I wouldn't be surprised. I think I think the biggest issue here is is not so much that they're taking liberties per se, but that they are condensing everything. And you know, that comes about that manifests in the form of like the creative liberties that they're taking. So I think if they were to adapt the the source material accurately.
Stefania: Ha.
yourtvgirl: You might, you might. You might.
Derek: you'd have like ten seasons, twenty seasons of T V and I think they're just not trying to do that. So they're they're they're trying to take all the ⁓ I've seen it described as a textbook, right? But I think w what you're saying, Lex, is more accurate where it's more of like TMZ, you know, third hand accounts. ⁓ so you already right off the bat you don't have like a narrative like Game of Thrones or
yourtvgirl: Yeah. Yeah.
Derek: A knight of the seven kingdoms, right? So you're adapting things and you already kinda had to fill in certain gaps and and do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to the writing. ⁓ so on top and then we all know how that worked out, right? The best seasons of Game of Thrones are the last two, ⁓ where they only had certain plot points and had to write on their own. so yeah, yeah, good. ⁓ so so I think there's a lot of that at play, right? That being said
yourtvgirl: Mm-hmm.
Justin: The ⁓
yourtvgirl: Not responding to the rage bait. Not responding to the rage bait.
Derek: Season two of House of the Dragon felt cumbersome to get through, right? I like season one a lot more, right? Maybe it I I think the the dynamic of ⁓ Viserys and the way that you know he was deteriorating on the throne and him with his ⁓ his brother wanting to be heir versus his daughter, like ⁓ like it was just it was just much more interesting.
yourtvgirl: Yes.
Derek: And then season two came around and it felt like a whole lot of nothing. It felt like some of season three should have been in season two. And I then I think they revealed that that they purposely chose not to do that, right? ⁓ and then now season three has come around. And the reason I'm I'm still in the middle is because we got kind of just like a penultimate episode, right? We got like a shit show of an episode for the premiere. We didn't really get much like actual story and things happening.
yourtvgirl: Mm-hmm.
Derek: ⁓ and I enjoyed it, but overall, like, I still would rather just watch a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms at this point, which is crazy to say. ⁓ obviously I'm biased, right? I think the Dunkin' Egg, I'm super biased with Dunkin' Egg, but ⁓ it's still crazy that I would prefer that over fucking dragons lighting things on fire and being crazy and and that kind of stuff. So ⁓ I'm not a huge stickler for adaptation of a source material, but I think that they need to adapt a little bit more here. ⁓ just for the sake of of making it more compelling.
Justin: Okay. Interesting. Okay.
yourtvgirl: I'm gonna say the big issue with the show, like the problem all around is that I have no issue with them wanting to make Allison and Ranira the focus, which like, again, when you read the book, it's really just Allison and Agon, that's what it should, or not, it's Ranira and Agon, like that's what it should be. But if we're gonna make it female-focused, why are we removing the women of their agency? I don't like that we never see Ranira like fully angry. I don't like that it's like, we're always seeing her being reasonable. They've killed her son. They've taken her throne. Like enough is enough. Like when you read this, Raniera literally becomes like almost a Cersei level. That's what we should be seeing. Cersei is one of the best characters ever written and even in the Game of Thrones show, incredible. But these women in House of the Dragon have been robbed of their agency. And that's my issue. It would make sense for Alicent to be robbed of her agency because she's supporting the patriarchy, right? ⁓ It makes sense in her case. It makes no sense in Rhaenyra's that she is just like a passenger in this process. and I don't know why they're doing it. That's the biggest issue.
Derek: I f yeah. I feel like season two it it worked, right? Like, hey, that is the whole point. Damon is being a jerk or whatever. And it it's still not my favorite season. But like, yo, season three, we should have been past this already. What do you like, what do you mean you got yeah, and I feel like specifically with the premiere, they did it they didn't adapt the whole like fly to Esos and take the children or they did, right? Like they the kids were going over there. ⁓
yourtvgirl: She should be done. Yeah.
Derek: And the reason that Jace ends up in the battle is because he's like protecting his brothers, right? Or something like that. ⁓ it's not just like I wanna contribute too, and then he just runs off. Like, so I think now that it's at the point where they've they've reimagined so many things that they have to reimagine other things to fix the stuff that they reimagined. And now it's like, Okay, but why are we still doing the Rainera thing? The the Rainera's helpless thing.
Justin: Interesting. Okay, let's start by going deeper into specific moments of the episode. Let's start off with wait, Steph, do you have any opinions on this?
Stefania: No, I've just been watching your cat just l lick themselves behind you the whole time. The whole time you guys were talking about it, your cat was just going in, cleaning themselves. I have no opinion on this because I have not seen Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, ⁓ Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. So I am I'm
Derek: What do you think?
yourtvgirl: That's sleigh queen. Yeah, that's sleigh. Sorry, she's...
Justin: Hey yo
yourtvgirl: ⁓ yeah, ⁓ yeah. Morning bath.
Justin: Anyways, ⁓ let's start off Death ⁓ my gosh.
yourtvgirl: Read the books, don't watch it. You're good, read the books.
Stefania: You know what? I am a reader. I'm very much a reader. You can see my books over there and I have a bookshelf here. So
yourtvgirl: The books are great.
Derek: Start with a knight of the seven kingdoms. ⁓
Justin: ⁓ my goodness.
Stefania: I know, but like should I read first?
yourtvgirl: Yes. Well, so here's the thing. Here's the thing. A Night of the Seven Kingdoms is my favorite book George has ever written. I will not watch the show because it's my favorite book that George has ever written. And because I cannot, the show looks good. I won't. I won't. I don't trust them. I'm sure it's good. But if you read the book, the book is, well, you've read it. You've read it.
Derek: Yes.
Stefania: Mm.
Derek: ⁓
Justin: What? So you haven't seen a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms? It's really good. Yeah.
yourtvgirl: The book to me, like, and I love George's work, but I, that, it is such a departure from everything else he writes. It is so chock full of just like metaphor. It's just incredible. I love it. I won't, and I won't let them ruin it. And they're gonna ruin it. I promise you, mark my words, they're gonna ruin it. They're gonna ruin it. And I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna do it.
Justin: the first season of a night of the Sign of the Kingdom was really good and I it's it's it's really good so far.
Derek: Season one so far yeah, season one was great. It's the only book the
yourtvgirl: So, so were seasons one through four of Game of Thrones. So were seasons one through four. I'm telling you, I have trust issues with HBO. Yeah.
Justin: Listen. Listen. I'm I'm I'm having a great time. ⁓ that being said, let's dive into moments in the episode. Let's start off with Team Green and what's going on in King's Landing, what's happening over there. So ⁓ in the episode, Aegon
Derek: Right, right, right. We'll keep you posted. We'll keep you posted. We'll keep you posted.
Justin: And Footfetish Guy have escaped the kingdom. In the previous season, Alison told Renira that Aegon would still be there, and when she gets home, he has fled the country. Meanwhile, ⁓ Aegon's favorite brother, ⁓ Aemond, one-eyed Aemond, is determined to stay in King's Landing to fight off any potential invasion invasion with his biggest dragon, Vagar. But To convince him to leave and to fight off Damon in ⁓ Heron's Hall. Alison gives Eamon a heart to heart and Aemon makes out with his mom. Tough watch.
Stefania: There's a lot of incest in this show, i right, in Game of Thrones.
Derek: You know what? Yes, correct. Yeah. No, n no, I mean yeah, yeah. Relatively speaking, yes.
yourtvgirl: Well, yes, yes. But this one...
Justin: Whoa! Yeah. This is the point where I'm gonna need a little bit more context about what happens in the book. Lex, is Amond a motherfucker?
yourtvgirl: This was shock value. This was shock value. No. He's not a motherfucker. He's a sister fucker. Big time. Big time sister fucker. Like those kids, big difference in the Targaryen world. Because you also have to look at it this way. Like the reason for Targaryen incest was that they did not want to dilute the bloodline in dragon blood, right? So like sister fucking, applauded. Okay? But his mom is not a Targaryen. And I just, he is so in on the Targaryen indoctrination. That is a character assassination making him kiss his mom.
Derek: Yeah. All the Tigerians are sister fuckers. They're just
Justin: Big difference? Big difference.
yourtvgirl: Like we all know he has mommy issues, but to the level that he expects like Targaryen greatness, he would not do that. He wouldn't. Also, it's weird that they're throwing that in because Alice Rivers, what should be happening is the witch, Alice Rivers, there's meant to be a weird dynamic between Daemon and Alice and Aemond and Alice. And I don't know why we're not playing into that more.
Derek: Yeah, they could have kept it simple.
yourtvgirl: that makes more sense, especially because Aiman wants to be Damon so bad. Like we just threw this in for like boys level shock value. That's what it felt like.
Derek: I think I have a theory that they threw it in there. Cause you know you know how like musicians and all this stuff, like like recording artists, the the what is it, the record labels will pressure them into like, hey, release this song because we think it has TikTok viral ability. I think that they put that in there for the memes. Especially the way that you see Alicent react where she's like it is like that's a meme. That's a meme waiting to happen.
yourtvgirl: Yeah. Yeah.
Derek: So it's for sure in there for like the shock value of it all. I think it would have played much better if like he just gets really close and maybe caresses her and it's a tense thing, right? It's like a fuck, is he gonna kill me? Is he gonna lock me up? Like what's gonna happen, right? Because he's the king now. ⁓ rather than yo, I kissed you and then I'm walking away. Like, you know, we could have just left it at just the tension of she's fearing for her life and her freedom. as opposed to like that she kissed that that he kissed her. ⁓ so I I really do think that they're ⁓ they're doing it for the sake of of the memes, for the shock value.
Justin: Interesting. I mean weird it was a weird flex, but okay. Like it wouldn't even be the craziest incest we've seen in Game of Thrones, which is kinda a crazy statement to say out loud to be honest with you. It's fucking weird. ⁓ but I think don't spoil this for me. But maybe it was more of a kiss of death thing. I think it was like a alright, goodbye forever, I'm gonna die. 'Cause I think
yourtvgirl: Like, it-
Derek: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, I no, it's just shock value.
Justin: Helena's vision. Well, I don't know what happens in the book, so don't spoil it for me. ⁓
yourtvgirl: It was shock value. It was. I'm gonna fully agree with Derek on this one and I actually think what Derek was talking about ⁓ is the problem with modern television in general is we need some at least two to three things that can be viral clips in every episode of TV. They expect viewers not to pay attention anymore, they dumb everything down and then all they care about is that they don't even care if people like shows anymore. They want it to be meme-able. That's the most important thing, meme-ability. That's it. So.
Derek: Yeah. I got a I got a I don't think I'll get in trouble for this. I got like a a notification or whatever that's like send us your script. Like from TikTok. Send us your script. ⁓ this is the you know, whatever these are the guidelines. And the first thing it says it's like must have something in the very first it's supposed to be like a series, in the very first episode, in the first fifteen seconds that will catch people's attention and this, that and the other.
Justin: Interesting.
yourtvgirl: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Derek: by episode eight it you need a can't stop watching moment by and it's like do you want like a good script or you just want like TikTok slop? You know what I mean? And I think T V shows are also being made like that to an extent too. And it kind of sucks.
yourtvgirl: That's all they want.
Justin: Dang, ⁓
yourtvgirl: Steph, you were kind of talking about something like that. ⁓ Like when you were talking to Peter Cephran, you were saying that like that's what he was saying is so great about indie movies is that you don't have like the studio overhead. ⁓ And I would argue that like the studio overhead is what's killing modern TV.
Stefania: ⁓ yeah. Yeah, for sure. Cause they're they're looking at like I mean, like you said, what people are watching on TikTok, the trends and stuff. They're trying to see how they can make more money instead of how to make better scripts. and that's exactly what makes studio films sometimes just flop and you see a lot more indie films just being superior and just better and and and more popular with with ⁓ movie crowds.
yourtvgirl: Mm-hmm.
Stefania: ⁓ it it's TV pays the bills and also the attention span of a lot of people are just is just going down and down and down and and you can only if you don't have something to catch them in like the first five seconds of a video, then they're gonna they're gonna scroll. So i it's coming from someone who studied film and wants to be in the industry and is dipping her toes in the industry I I
Derek: Phoebe pays the bills too.
Stefania: don't like where this is going. I don't wanna see hard work and and ⁓ just talent go to waste for making money.
Justin: ⁓ Speaking of making money, we ⁓ we cut to a we cut to an island where Ulf ⁓ Adam of Hull or Adam Hull or whatever or what's his name? Is it Adam of Hull or is it Adam Valeria? Anyway, the three Okay. Adam, Hugh, and Ulf. Okay, go ahead.
Derek: Moral of the story, don't kiss your mama on the lips.
Stefania: Yeah.
Derek: One is Alan and one is Adam. Is that racist that I don't know which one? Maybe.
yourtvgirl: Mm-hmm. They're, well, they're Valerian, yes. They're Valerian now because Corlys has finally claimed them, but you were right. Of the whole was originally, because they were bastards, right? So, yeah.
Justin: Mm-hmm. So Adam, Hugh, and Ulf are waiting in a island with some weird creatures, possi possibly Mr. Tumness, and they're waiting for the signal to come and join the battle, and it never came, mostly because Rainier was busy. And they get a visit from Alice Rivers, telling them that they're completely missing the battle. And while this is happening, Ulf brings up some valid complaints, as in All this, and we're just knights. We don't even get a castle, we don't even get anything. If this works out, we're just knights with a fancy horse. Which leads me to believe that it's gonna be betrayal soon. But ⁓ do I these are my three favorite characters in the show? I love them all. I I led what well Lex Lex gave me ⁓ interesting look. I think Ulf is very funny, I think.
Derek: I agree with her.
Justin: I th I think Ulvis's so funny and I I love Adam of Hull. I love I think he's the awesome dragon rider. I think he looks cool and Hugh looks cool too. And they have all three of them have really cool dragons. I can't wait to see them more. And I just love this like trio of thought. And it reminds me of like the little people in Game of Thrones. It reminds me a little bit of Knight of Seven Kingdoms of like the the people looking up at this very large war. I I I really like this scene. I
yourtvgirl: Adam, fair, very fair, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Justin: Lex, did you not like it? I I thought it was great.
yourtvgirl: It's not that, I was judging you for saying they're your three favorites. Two things, Alice Rivers, like we need to be playing up...
Justin: Great. I'm sorry.
yourtvgirl: No, no, I'm gonna give you like Hugh and Adam. I'm gonna give you that but what I'm gonna say is that I lost my train of thought. All right. Well, the first one was that Alice Rivers We need to be playing up the magic element in this fantasy show more because unfortunately this franchise just thinks that like dragons is enough We should be playing up the magic a lot more magic is very important in the lore And I think we could be using Alice Rivers a lot more and they're not so she's an underexploited character ⁓ But the other thing is that this theme of like the bastards ⁓ obviously carries into Game of Thrones, right? ⁓ so I don't know, it's fun to have that concept, but also the whole thing about the bastards is it challenges everything. Like it's not amplified enough how important it is that Ranira even started recruiting bastards. Like this challenges the entire Targaryen dynasty. It creates so much unrest because the whole reasoning for ⁓ incestuous behavior in the bloodline was dragons. But then you have these people that are just bastards that can claim them just the same. So it's challenging their right to rule. It's really like... It's not hit enough in the show how important it is. ⁓ The other thing too is like those are your three favorites when Damon Targaryen exists. Like that's crazy. That's crazy work. That's crazy work.
Justin: Here's the thing about here's the thing. I think Damon is cool. I think he's a cool character. I'm talking about like I w I enjoy their scenes when like from the contrast between season one with Outolf and then he c he comes in like a wrecking ball of charisma is very good television for me. I really enjoy that. You know what I mean? He like throws a wrench in the entirety of Team Black.
Derek: That's very crazy. Yeah. When Sir Kristen Cole exists, just kidding. Just kidding. I hate him. I hate him so much.
yourtvgirl: Stop. Full stop. Full stop. We'll get there.
Justin: You know, and I I'm excited to see that I like play out. You know what I mean? And plus the Adam and Sea Smoke of it all being like, Okay, so does Lenor is is he dead or did Sea Smoke was like, I just you just smell familiar, buddy.
Derek: That was cool. You got dreads. He had dreads.
yourtvgirl: That is one of the few like, yeah. That's one of the few liberties that they took that I'm actually really okay with was Leonor's ending. But in general, again, if we really amplified these characters, they could be so much more powerful. If we amplified Raniera's desperation, if she was not as controlled, if she was genuinely unstable, if she gets locked in her room, not because Jace is protecting her and then she's just in there crying and very calm, If we make it that she is a mad queen, it makes more sense for Jace to be like, I don't know what to do. I just don't think she's thinking and we have to do this. And he's scared of her. Make it that he's scared of his own mother. Make it a contrast from the beginning of their relationship to now. Make it that all of this loss has changed her, but they're not doing that. That's the problem.
Derek: Because y that would require too many seasons. They don't wanna do that. They want five seasons, six movies, it's too many episodes. Yeah, exactly.
yourtvgirl: It's too many episodes. It's too many episodes. they just gave us shitty CGI and gave us 15 episodes and actually explored character depth and character motivation, it would be way better.
Derek: Yeah, it'd be better.
Justin: Do
Derek: Mm-hmm. I I do want to say it's not Mr. Tumness. It's Zack Snyder's Mr. Tumness.
yourtvgirl: You
Justin: I saw the your tweet about this, Derek. I saw that thread. How dare you reuse the joke? ⁓ Steph, what did you think of the scene?
Derek: Yeah. Yeah. Just wanna say. All right. It's not it's not
Stefania: I you know pr ev I agree with everything ⁓ that you guys said. I totally have the same opinion as you all and yeah that we need more episodes I think I will agree with that. I will agree hang on, hang on, hang on. I I will agree with that 'cause it happens with a lot of shows. They are just like, Yeah, we're gonna come out with twenty two episodes in one season, like with Daredevil and they're like, No, we're actually gonna do nine instead.
yourtvgirl: You
Justin: So you can not watch them stuff?
Derek: I'm okay with not twenty two, but like a twelve or a fifteen. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Cause twenty-two, when people say ⁓ my god, yeah. When people say twenty two, they they're thinking of like the big bang theory. You know what I mean? Like they're thinking of like friends and you know, that those types of that type of TV. Like, yeah, no, twenty two is too much for for like HBO, you know, premium television, so to speak.
Stefania: No, no, no, no. That's just an example. That's just an example. Yeah, like 15 is a good number for episodes, and then they're like, we're gonna do eight.
yourtvgirl: or seven.
Stefania: Or seven. Right, right. Yeah. Yeah, 'cause like you're gonna you're gonna take like an eight hundred page book and do all of that in eight episodes doesn't make sense.
yourtvgirl: Well, yeah. Because they said this is the third and final season, correct?
Justin: No, they got four. This is what I hear.
Derek: Did they? No, I don't think so. I think there's four. I think it's four, yeah.
yourtvgirl: ⁓ they're doing four? Okay. It's still not enough.
Justin: ⁓ Speaking of not being enough, let's cut over to Team Black, where ⁓ everyone's favorite Lannister is recruiting everyone's favorite pirates. I thought this pirate lady was really cool. And they are going to arrive at the Battle of the Govet to sack King's Landing. The problem is the sea snake and his bastard son, who is now legitimatize ⁓ legitimize Jesus, I can't talk today. Are headed to the same direction. I thought the battle battle of the gullet was awesome. I really did. No bullshit. I thought it was incredible. I thought it was thrilling. I don't think it's the best Game of Thrones battle ever. I don't think anything tops ⁓ Battle of the Bastards or Hard Home ⁓ or any of those battles, because those are like top tier.
Derek: What's the other what's the other battle? ⁓ Blackwater Bay? No, with the Blackwater, yeah. No no, I don't think so. But it's good. It's still good though.
Justin: With the green fire and the ships. Blood Battle of Blackwater. I think this is better than the Battle of Blackwater. I really do. Cause I do I I thought it was thrilling. I loved when the Corless was threading the needle with the ship. I thought the pirate lady was so interesting, a fascinating villain. I'm so sad she unfortunately perished because I like, Man, I could watch like ten seasons of this lady. ⁓
Derek: No, no, no. No, no, no. She serves her purpose and
Justin: I love the moment where in the beginning of the episode she's like, How much does that armor weigh? And then it comes back when they have to go faster and they throw the Lannisters off the ship to make the ship faster. I thought that was awesome. I thought that was so clever. And I I'm gonna be real with you. Like seeing black people do cool black things was awesome. I really I thought it was fucking awesome. I I can't complain about that. I I know it's probably different from the books. Lex.
Derek: Yeah.
Justin: How is this different from the books? We'll talk about the sheep stealer of it all after this, but how is it different?
yourtvgirl: Well... Again, again, the book, this book specifically is not like the other ones. ⁓ you don't get like George rambling on and on in detail. Like this is really just think of blind items online and think of TMZ and then think of only taking the winner's side of things. like only taking like the maester who wrote this hates Raniera. Hated, hated her team, right? Hates Team Black. So you have to take into account that a lot of the depictions of Team Black in here aren't necessarily accurate. ⁓ and that things may be inflated for Team Green. there's a lot of, you kind of form your own opinion, but there's not a lot of detail because these maesters didn't experience these battles. So it's more like, they'll be like, the battle happened, this person died, this, like that, those are a little more, it's when you're talking about secrets and rumors that we've got, because the maesters all love to gossip. Like, literally, this is written by Gossip Girl, okay? ⁓ It's just accounts from multiple, it is. ⁓ So my issue with the scene was, and I'm so happy you liked it, ⁓ I love Coralise, I am. I'm so happy, like I'm just, you have to understand I'm a D1 hater for certain things and like Ryan Colindale needs to get his ass beat. ⁓ So anyway, not that I condone violence, but in this case. ⁓
Justin: But
yourtvgirl: I don't know, I just didn't feel like, I was happy we could see it visually, right? Cause that's an issue with House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones is a lot of fight scenes happens and we can't see them. ⁓ But I didn't feel like it was as important as it needed to be. I'm not saying every battle has to be battle of the bad bastards, but like we lose Jason this battle. She lost her, you know, she lost Luke. ⁓ In the other seasons like this should be this should have hit a lot harder than it did we should have been Like focusing on Corley's and his sons because this is really an important moment for them as well I needed more focus on them and I needed more focus on Jace And I just don't feel like we got that I do think the scene should have been longer ⁓ And I just think that they should have been Really like this is Jace's send-off I didn't really feel it. Like I'm watching him get hit with the arrows and I was like, ⁓ man, that was it.
Derek: Yeah, they they yeah, they've they've changed so much that they're they're my hope for season three is that this episode and maybe the next episode wraps up all of those like missteps from season two and then from then on they're on better ground to to give us, you know, something better. But
yourtvgirl: Mm-hmm.
Derek: already seeing the preview of the next episode and Rainier's like in bed crying and all and all this kind of stuff. It feels like it's gonna be a repeat of season two. ⁓ so and again, it's not to say she can't grieve her son and all that stuff, but like we need to like like are they gonna kill all her children before we get there? You know what mean? ⁓
Justin: Well, okay. I do I do wanna pause. I do wanna pause and say Are we are are you ⁓ are y'all upset that it's not like the book or are you upset about what happens in like actually happens in the show? You know what I'm trying to say? It's like are we upset because it the div the differences are too much from the book? Or are we upset that like these characters aren't like do ⁓
Derek: No no Yeah. I'm actually
Justin: in are in character within the show. You know what I mean? I'm trying to examine the text within the show. Look like I I thought he I think he's funny. I don't know. Like I don't know I I don't have the context that you guys have. I do I do wanna say I ⁓ I re watched Game of Thrones ⁓ when House of the Dragon came out, ⁓ season one.
Derek: I'm I'm upset you liked it. I'm upset that you like Ulf. Ulf? The guy named Ulf is who you like. Ulf.
Justin: And I realized Joffrey spoils half of House of the Track and like on a whim. And I'm like, ⁓ I I wish I didn't rewatch it. But ⁓ at the same time, at the same time, like within the text of the show, I don't have context for the book, Jace within his hubris to proof himself, and like he has the insecurity of being a bastard wanting to
Derek: Yeah.
yourtvgirl: In a two minute span, yeah. He spoils the whole thing.
Derek: Yeah, make a name for himself, be productive, prove he's Targaryen, protect his mother. Like it wor Okay, here's the thing.
Justin: That that makes sense to me. It re it tracks from what I've seen within the show. Only for that hubris to kill him in the battle seems like a classic Game of Thrones moment to me. ⁓
yourtvgirl: They're not. It does.
Derek: It should have been Yes. Yes. And put it hold on. Put it in episode in season two. Put it in season two. She loses both sons in
yourtvgirl: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Justin: ⁓ that I agree with. This was supposed to be a season two finale and we know that for sure based on the news that's coming out about this season. ⁓ it would have hit harder, I guess. ⁓
Derek: This is Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And I think to your point, right, I'm actually make ⁓ still writing like a video about people upset about accurate adaptations not, you know, not being adaptations not being accurate. ⁓ I don't care for accuracy like that, right? But in the nerdy and the fantasy communities ⁓ there is a lot of that. There's like, ⁓ it's not a faithful adaptation. Actually, this, that, and the other, right? Like it happens with comic book movies all the time, right? Like, you don't have to be an expert in the lore. You don't have to be an expert in the source material to critique things as adaptations, ⁓ as as standalone movies, as standalone TV shows. There's a difference between is it accurate and is it good in its own merit? And I think there's sure there's a lot of people that don't like it because it's not accurate and they're conflating quality with accuracy of source material. ⁓ I just think that they in this case there's a it's a causation. Trying to condense trying to trying to condense everything into something in a much smaller span in a different medium I think has caused the inaccuracies to mess with the quality a little bit.
yourtvgirl: It's a lack of integrity.
Derek: That's it. ⁓
Justin: Speaking of inaccuracies, let's talk about the biggest departure from the book, which is Reina claiming sheep stealer, riding it into battle, burning some of her own fleet, and ⁓ subsequently ⁓ distracting Jace and getting him killed. Actually, ⁓ I don't think it's it I don't think it's completely Reina's fault.
Derek: Yeah.
yourtvgirl: Okay.
Justin: But it's not she didn't help she didn't like help the situation. I know from what the internet is telling me that this is a huge departure because number one, Reina's not there. Number two, Raina has her own dragon. And Sheepstealer is owned by another black character entirely named Nettles. Lex. Can you give us the lowdown of who is Nettles and how far of a departure is? Was this from the books?
yourtvgirl: Okay, the erasure of the character Nettles is really, really upsetting because again, the entire point of Nettles' character is challenging everything we know about who can actually control the dragons. This book really explores are the Targaryens the only people that can actually be in control of them or was that propaganda? was that propaganda. So Nettles, we don't know what her lineage is. We have no idea. And that's why it's so important. Like we don't know if she has Targaryen blood at all. And she ends up like Daemon ends up. like training her and taking her on and Nettles is an incredible character. there's even rumors like Raniera. Okay, let me go back for a second because I wanted to talk about what you were saying about accuracy. I don't care about accuracy. There are some instances where I think it's great. I care about the integrity and the spirit and capturing that from an adaptation like Interview with the Vampire. Excellent show. They have taken so many liberties. I will tell you right now those books are great. The show is significantly better. Significantly.
Justin: Love that show. It's really good.
yourtvgirl: better. ⁓ Yeah, that's one of the best shows on TV right now. ⁓ But my issue with this is at this point in time, Raniera's nickname in the realm is supposed to be Raniera the Cruel. This, she is meant to be a Cersei level, okay? And we're not seeing it. So that's really, I want to see Raniera be cruel. It should have already happened by now. It should have happened after Luke.
Justin: What acts has Reneer already done in the books? Blood and cheese, I guess was Damon's fault?
yourtvgirl: They made it Damon's fault. They made it, they took away her agency. they, the show decided that Raniara didn't know what was happening. That was a huge issue I had too. Let her own being cruel. Let her say, you took my throne. I was fair. I was playing nice. You've killed my son. I don't care anymore.
Justin: How so?
yourtvgirl: but they're not doing that. that's again an example of them stripping her agency and making it about Damon. And Damon, like they're trying to... No, go ahead.
Derek: They're setting her up kinda like a like a sorry, they're setting her up kinda like a Danny proto Danny where Olena's like, yo, you have fucking dragons, bitch. Like, fuck people up, but then Danny listened to everybody else, and she ends up still ultimately winning, but with one dragon and you know, all the other drama or whatever. ⁓ and and it's questionable how much of that like was HBO versus ⁓ actual what George wanted, which maybe we'll never know if because he's really old. ⁓ but
Justin: But what are the acts that were missing of her cruel cruelty? Like what are we what like, you know, besides blood and cheese, but like
yourtvgirl: I think he wrote them. No, it's just the way people spoke of her. It's just like she was completely ruthless. And this whole thing of being like, we don't know if Damon's on her side or if he's fighting for himself. He enjoys her cruelty. He relishes in her cruelty. He loves that they get to share war together. Like they're apart, but for the both of them, this is like, it's just, it's great. So I don't know, they're spinning it in a lot of different ways.
Justin: Has the so are those moments happening in the future or did we skip over specific cruelt okay or is can you tell
yourtvgirl: they should be happening now. Like, I don't, like to go over the exact, all right, to go over the exact examples, because I haven't read this now, in a while, I'd have to, you'd have to give me time.
Justin: While while she's looking, Steph, what do you think?
Stefania: ⁓ yeah, you know, I have to agree with everything you guys are saying. ⁓ I ⁓ I couldn't have said it better myself, you know?
Derek: Ha ha ha.
Justin: Ha ha ha
Derek: The Damon the Damon stuff I think is the biggest ⁓ indicator of where they s they went wrong. We spent way too much time with him in his little like peyote trip in Heron Hall in season two. Right? Yeah. Yeah, like we spent what is it? I saw somebody online called it Luigi's Mansion. ⁓ we spent way too much time with that, right? And to Lexus' point, they
Justin: ⁓ in Heronhall taunts haunted mansion. Damon's haunted mansion. Rough.
yourtvgirl: Mm-hmm.
Derek: Like like bro, did we need that? So it feels to an extent like they're just they try to justify spending that much money on Matt Smith, and I love Matt Smith. Especially in the interviews and and he never turns in like a bad performance. I love him. But give him stuff to do that isn't that. You know what I mean? Like what do you mean he's still like what do you mean he's still like questioning whether he should be king and
yourtvgirl: Mm-hmm. Ever.
Derek: ⁓ all the the air to the Visteris's heir and all that stuff like yo you guys are at war bro what are you what are you guys doing? Question that later. You know what I mean? And to your point, right, the spirit of the characters. They're supposed to enjoy being together. They're supposed to be enjoy being the f the fact that they're at war and this is just kind of where it is. And there's hints of that in like the previews for season three, specifically from Damon. He's like in war, all sides lose or something like that. He says something where
Justin: Okay.
yourtvgirl: Mm-hmm. Thanks.
Derek: It kind of implies like, okay, okay, finally people are starting to get the point here. ⁓ but we've just gotten so much like ⁓ it reminds me almost like Breaking Bad. You know, where you're watching twenty minutes of just like super slow burn stuff and you would never even think at certain points that they're actively at war. People have already died, things have already been burnt up, dragons have already died. You'd never think that in some moments of the episode. ⁓
Justin: Right.
Derek: And i I feel like that defeats the purpose, right? We're three seasons in. Just
yourtvgirl: So.
Justin: Okay, ⁓ go ahead, Lex.
yourtvgirl: Yeah, like here, I'm finally reaching the point because this whole book is not House of the Dragon and this is why they're being so sneaky with it, right? House of the Dragon is like a little sliver of this entire book. We've got Aegon's conquest in the beginning, okay? So it's meant to be like a full like Targaryen history and it even talks about what happens after. But like here are some fun differences. There's a rumor that Alicent is the one who poisoned Viserys. Should have played that up, that's fun. ⁓ Hold on, let's see what else. Okay, I'm almost there. So really, what you have to read is like, like what you have to know is how this reads is like, it's informational. They'll just say what other people thought. Okay, like Damon's at Heron Hall, they're talking about everything with Alice. ⁓ Jace gets to the veil. Let's see. The whole point is that the way that they depict the women, obviously they demonize them. So like, I understand the take of being like, see, they wouldn't have done this, but I also just think again, it was a bad direction to go if we're gonna have a female-led show. ⁓ So let me see. Also, we should talk about the failing upwards of Cole. I think we should talk about Christian Cole failing upwards. I really do.
Justin: Kristen Cole typical white man crispy. listen, I I know he's gonna get burnt to a crisp at some point. He's not long for this world and he even knows it. So he's like, What's the point anymore when there's fucking dragons in the air, you know? but I'm excited to see what happens in episode two of season three. I'm still thumbs up for this show.
Derek: Crispy Cole.
yourtvgirl: Crispy cool.
Derek: Yeah. I wanna just avoid everything. Yeah.
Justin: I I'm re I'm having a great time. And if Rhaenera becomes cooler, I'm not gonna be upset because that seems like a appropriate path for Raina. But I'm also enjoying the path that she's on right now. Except do I would I want less tears? Probably, yeah. ⁓ 'cause I think this show if has been teasing us the war and the big battles for a long time. And hopefully we get the we we get we get some fights in this season. ⁓ with that being said, I think that's the end of our show today. Thank you so much, Lex, for joining us. Hopefully we can have you on for more ⁓ House of the Dragon stuff. This was great. ⁓ make sure you follow us on all of the socials. That's on TikTok, Twitter, Blue Sky, and all that good stuff. And we shall see you next week.
yourtvgirl: Thanks for having me. I'm down.
Derek: Yo fuck Kristen. Crispy Cole.
Justin: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, stop remitting the show.
