OM DENNE EPISODE
Ranking in Google is no longer the only goal.
Now you also have to ask: Can AI actually extract, understand, and cite your content?
In this episode of The Search Hustle Podcast, William Nozak continues the Visual Semantics and Page Structure Masterclass with the AI Extraction Test, a framework for thinking about how your content is interpreted by AI search systems.
Traditional SEO treated the webpage as the primary unit of value. Someone searched Google, saw a list of links, clicked your page, and read the content themselves.
AI search changes that experience.
Systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews can extract specific information from multiple sources and use those individual facts or passages to construct an answer. That means the value isn't always the entire page anymore. Sometimes it's the specific piece of information AI can confidently extract from it.
That's why structure matters.
If an important definition, comparison, statistic, or process is buried inside a massive paragraph, it may be difficult to extract without losing context. William argues that businesses should start creating content in clean, self-contained blocks that communicate one idea clearly.
William introduces what he calls the standalone test:
Could this definition, statistic, comparison, or answer be removed from the rest of the page and still make complete sense?
If the answer is no, it may need to be rewritten.
A strong definition should clearly identify the entity, provide the important attributes, and make sense without requiring someone to read the paragraphs before or after it.
The episode also moves beyond content into the technical side of AI visibility.
William discusses reviewing your robots.txt configuration to make sure important AI crawlers aren't unintentionally blocked. He also talks about the emerging use of llms.txt as an additional way to point AI systems toward important authoritative content, while emphasizing that it doesn't replace properly structured pages.
Then comes measurement.
Traditional keyword rankings and organic traffic don't tell you whether your business is appearing inside AI-generated answers. William recommends creating a parallel measurement process that includes manually testing important customer questions in AI platforms, monitoring AI referral traffic, and tracking when your company is cited or referenced as a source.
For this episode's homework, William challenges businesses to run three tests:
The Standalone Test: Pull the primary answer from one of your best-performing articles and see whether it still makes sense by itself.
The Crawler Audit: Check robots.txt and make sure you're not unintentionally blocking AI crawlers from important content.
The AI Query Test: Ask AI platforms five of your highest-value customer questions and see which brands and websites they use as sources.
Search will continue to change, but the underlying principle remains the same.
Make your meaning explicit. Make your information structured. Make your expertise easy for both humans and machines to understand.
