OM DENNE EPISODE
Put the same little check on Dorothy in Kansas, Brigitte Bardot at her wedding, and a supermodel on an Alaïa runway, and it tells three very different stories. We start with gingham’s disputed name and its unexpected beginnings as a stripe, then follow the fabric from the Asian cotton trade and Manchester mills to kitchens, children’s wardrobes, and the legend of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie’s trunks full of vichy. We get into Dorothy’s not-quite-blue-and-white dress, the American country-girl look, James Bond in gingham, and the pink wedding dress that made Bardot’s checks sell out across Paris.
Then we get into who makes the rules: Alaïa turning Tati’s bargain-store check into a collectible runway piece, the J.Crew shirt that became so common it got its own Instagram account, and Barbie’s pink gingham summer. We talk coquette, boxer shorts, and the fashion advice telling women how to wear checks without looking too sweet, too young, or too picnic-ready. Dorothy gets a second reading, too: is her dress the uniform of a girl who belongs at home, or the outfit of the girl who exposes the man behind the curtain?
In the back half, Sandy Liang tries to move beyond the aesthetic everyone associates with her, Batsheva turns a torn Laura Ashley dress into the start of a brand, and the Alaïa Tati collection gets a second life through Normani’s houndstooth look in “WAP.” We cover Rei Kawakubo’s “lumps and bumps,” how scale and styling change the check, and Damson Madder’s case for outerwear that can be serious and frivolous at the same time. We close on our own wardrobes, a red gingham couch, and a reversible trench that might change Yoana’s mind—plus a bonus yap sesh on Chandler’s Louvre-heist near miss, dream historical objects, and Bulgaria’s sweetheart.
