“Holding the Door Open for the Heart in Waiting”
Malachi 3:7
"Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you," says the Lord Almighty. "But you ask, 'How are we to return?'"
Few burdens in ministry are heavier than looking at an empty chair and remembering the person who used tosit there. As a leader, watching a former life group member drift away from God, drop out of fellowship, or walk away from their faith can break your heart. You might replay past conversations in your head, wonder if you missed a warning sign, or struggle with feelings of helplessness as time goes by.
In Malachi 3:7, God speaks to a people who had repeatedly turned their backs on Him. Yet, even aftergenerations of distance and compromise, God’s message remains unchanged: "Return to me, and I will return to you." Notice who takes the initiative in this verse. God doesn't wait for His people to earn their wayback before He makes His heart known. He proclaims His readiness to welcome them long before they make a move.
As leaders, we are called to embody that same faithful waiting. Like the father in the parable of the Prodigal Son, our role while we wait is not to police, force, or give up—it is to watch, pray, and keep the door open.
For leaders in the waiting season; your prayers Are building an invisible bridge, even when your messagesgo unanswered or life group seats remain empty, your intercession is active spiritual work. Praying for former members keeps your heart soft toward them and keeps the spiritual line open, trusting that God’s Spirit can reach places you cannot. God cares for them even more than you do. It is easy to feel like their faith rests entirely on your shoulders. Remember: Jesus is the Good Shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to pursue the one (Luke 15:4). You are a faithful steward, but He is the Savior. Trust His relentless pursuit of their hearts. Remember, waiting is an act of faithful grace. When the people asked, "How are we to return?", they were confused about the path back. Former members may feel too ashamed, distant, or awkward to reach out.Your persistent, gentle love—without guilt or heavy expectations—shows them that the way back is marked by grace, not judgment.
Ask God to clear away hurt, bitterness, intellectual doubts, or life distractions that have built walls around their hearts. Pray for Divine encounters that God brings people, circumstances, or quiet moments into their daily lives that gently remind them of His love and truth. Pray that any lie telling them "you've been gone too long" or "you're not welcome back" would be broken by the truth of Malachi 3:7.
Who is one person God is placing on your heart today to pray for intentionally this week? How can you reach out to a former member in a simple, low-pressure way just to let them know they are valued and missed, without asking them for a commitment?
