00:00:02
Speaker 1: This is Jaguars Post Game presented by GEHA. Join Brian Sexton, Mike Dempsey, and Pride of the Jaguars Fred Taylor as they break down today's game. Jaguars Post Game is brought to you by Farrah and Farrah, the University of Florida, Whataburger, and by Everbank. Jaguars Post Game presented by GEHA starts right now.
00:00:28
Speaker 2: They did what? The Jacksonville Jaguars won this game at the very end after trailing with seconds to go. 19-17, Jags on top of the Philadelphia Eagles. That is your final today. Jaguars postgame brought to you by GEHA, Government Employees Health Association. Benefit for federal employees and retirees. And a little bit different lineup for the postgame today as we got the guys doing their duty over in London. We're back here in the States in Jacksonville. I'm Mike Dempsey along with Coach Mark Duffner. Coach, it was an afternoon of a roller coaster of emotions for Jacksonville Jaguar fans.
00:01:08
Speaker 3: No doubt about it. But as Yogi Beres says, it's not over until it's over. And praise the Lord that, again, Abdullah has a great return. And, again, what can you say again about Cam Little?
00:01:19
Speaker 2: Wow.
00:01:19
Speaker 4: Unbelievable.
00:01:20
Speaker 2: I mean, he piped it, you know, when he had to have it. And I'm questioning, has Cam had many clutch kicks, right? Because when the Jacks were winning eight in a row last year, they were blowing people out every single week. You know, he missed the one in the playoffs. He missed one earlier this year in Denver that could have given them the lead.
00:01:38
Speaker 5: So, hey.
00:01:39
Speaker 2: Clutch, that was all about clutch. And by the way, what a tremendous job Logan Cook did catching those high snaps all day. I'm not picking on Devon Hamilton here. He's not expecting to have to snap the ball. I know that was something he used to do. I don't know how much practice he gets these days, Coach.
00:01:56
Speaker 6: Well, let me tell you this.
00:01:57
Speaker 3: He looked like Manute Bull going up to get some of those. I'm telling you right now. So, again, great job by him.
00:02:03
Speaker 2: All right, we got Fred Taylor joining us now here on the postgame. Mark Dumpner, Mike Dempsey, and Freddie T. Fred, what a spectacle today at the end of this ballgame for the Jags to pull it out in the final seconds.
00:02:16
Speaker 4: Hey, how's it going, guys?
00:02:17
Speaker 7: Dude, bro, that's what I'm talking about. I'm trying to figure out if I'm going to get fined for my profanity-laced tweets at the.
00:02:27
Speaker 4: End of the game, but I think it was well-deserved. Man, you know what?
00:02:31
Speaker 7: Not the best game from an operational standpoint. A lot of stuff they got to go and clean up. I mean, at this very moment, none of that matters. They got the win. I'm sure they're going to enjoy that. But it's very much a red flag. Back-to-back weeks, the amount of penalties they've had, the operations, and getting the ball out, getting the playoff. They got called for two delay games back-to-back. That was creeping up on him the entirety of the game. So Liam has to be better. Whoever's getting the call ball, the plays out to Trevor, they have to be much more efficient. Otherwise, this is going to linger, and this is going to cost them some games as it almost cost them today.
00:03:14
Speaker 2: You said it right, Freddie. I think right now, nothing matters in this moment. You've got the victory, and that's really all you focus on. This would have been a devastating loss. Not that Philadelphia isn't a really good team, but the state of affairs with the injuries on the offensive line. Freddie, you talk about some of these warning signs. Yes, the operations were bad. I would have expected the Jaguars' pass rush to have a chance to tee off today on Jalen Hurts against a bunch of backup offensive linemen, and it didn't happen, Fred. What did you see from the Jaguars' defensive line?
00:03:46
Speaker 7: Yeah, I thought I saw some pressure early on, but then they were rushing five, you know, some zone blitzes sprinkled in here and there, but I didn't see much pressure simply with a four-down rush, which would have allowed them the luxury of play a lot of zone behind. So much like you, Mike, I thought they would have taken advantage of the injuries, certainly across the offensive line by the Eagles.
00:04:11
Speaker 4: But I didn't see that.
00:04:14
Speaker 7: But on the flip side, I saw Jalen Carter have a ball pro monster day. And we got to figure out that when we have these type of matchup schematically, we have to help the guys up front.
00:04:28
Speaker 4: Otherwise, you're going to have these type of outcomes.
00:04:30
Speaker 2: Yeah, nobody had a chance, Coach, to handle Jalen Carter one-on-one today. Didn't have a prayer to slow him down, and he was a wrecking ball. But look, you know, the Jags kind of scraped it together, did not play anything close to their best game. Do you, like Fred said, you got to get a lot of things cleaned up, right? We're sitting here, like the first half, the penalties were all being called on Jacksonville outside the opening kickoff return, Freddie, where it was two offsetting on each team. The Eagles didn't get called for a single penalty in the first half. Coach, do you think the Jags earned most of what they got in the penalty department today?
00:05:04
Speaker 6: I hate to say it. I think they did. I think they did.
00:05:07
Speaker 3: I mean, geez, Pete, like we talked about, I mean, it was early in the game when we already had five penalties by us. We wound up with 13 for 100 yards. And, you know, last year we struggled with the penalty situation last year. Now, we started the year off pretty doggone well. We were in the top five in.
00:05:23
Speaker 6: Terms of least penalties.
00:05:24
Speaker 3: Being penalized but the last two weeks we're leading the league we literally lead the league i think it's 22 or 23 total penalties that leads the league right now it's got to get fixed.
00:05:34
Speaker 2: Well, I'll say this for the Jags defense, Freddie. Early on, it was a little shocking with the Eagles having come in with 17 consecutive failed third down conversion attempts. They were 0 for 12 last week. They were 0 for their last 17. Jags allowed them to convert four of their first six, but only two of their last nine. So I think whether it was the coverage, whether the pressure was getting to Jalen Hurts, whatever it was, the Jags defense picked it up in that department as the game went on.
00:06:01
Speaker 7: Yeah, and I do want to take a moment to give love to both fronts. The defensive front, I'll start with them. We didn't see a ton of pressure early on, but they had pressure when it mattered in pressure situations. They did well. Offensively, again, started slow. A lot of pressure from the Eagles offensive front. But there were moments when they really got after him in the run game. I think the Eagles defensive front sort of slowed down. And then our guys sort of took advantage. You saw a few runs by Tootin here and there turning that defensive up. And they found a way to start executing better offensively. But still a ton that they have to work on if they want to be.
00:06:51
Speaker 4: A great team.
00:06:52
Speaker 2: All right, a lot more to do here from the Hyundai Studios, the Jaguars Radio Network presented by UF Health, the official healthcare partner of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Final score here, 19-17 in London in favor of your Jacksonville Jaguars. This is Jaguars Postgame on Jaguars Radio. Jaguars postgame continues. Mike Dempsey, Fred Taylor, and Mark Duffner. Today's game presented by Bud Light, the official beer of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Right now, let's go back to London and head to the Everbank Vault. Bucky Brooks with Amir Abdullah.
00:07:27
Speaker 6: Bucky?
00:07:29
Speaker 4: Thanks, guys.
00:07:29
Speaker 8: Amir, let's just talk about the big kickoff return. Talk about it. How'd you know how to get down?
00:07:34
Speaker 9: Man, we got the perfect call with the perfect kick. You know, we knew that we could hit him in the alleys. That's the one that Josh Cameron had one callback earlier in the game. So we knew if we got the right kick, we had an opportunity. And having a kicker like Cam Little, we knew if we got anywhere near the midfield, get down and let him handle the job.
00:07:52
Speaker 6: And, man, we're just.
00:07:55
Speaker 9: You know, it's not over until it's over. You know, and I saw things kind of open up for me. And when I made the kicker miss, I kind of was thinking, like, I got to get down. But the clock here is a little different than what it is.
00:08:05
Speaker 6: USA was a little bit lower.
00:08:06
Speaker 9: So I saw the last minute was at two seconds. So I just darted down when I could. And luckily, we were able to get the time stopped.
00:08:12
Speaker 8: You know, it's funny because Liam always talks about situation awareness, and even in your explanation you were talking about, we talked about get to midfield and get down.
00:08:18
Speaker 7: Yeah.
00:08:19
Speaker 8: To me, you wouldn't think that that would be the thought process, but that's so amazing. So talk about how you guys talk about situations and understand how to execute in those moments.
00:08:27
Speaker 9: Yeah, we have situational things come up in practice all the time, and this is something that we practice. We understand that around eight seconds left, if we're looking to get in a Hail Mary situation or if we're looking with a kicker like ours who can kick it from 60 to 70 yards, if we get in a certain range on the field, we're agreeing to get down. It's kind of similar to like a Rolex situational offense. When after you get the first down, get down. So Quentin Morris did a great job kicking out on the two. Once we got to the two, I felt like we needed a little bit more just to get past the kicker.
00:08:59
Speaker 6: And once we did that, I knew we were safe and sound.
00:09:02
Speaker 8: Oh, so let's talk about your experience with the Jaguars. What have you learned from this team just through? Five games, sitting there 4-1. What have you learned about the spirit of the squad?
00:09:08
Speaker 6: Man, the resolve on this team is special.
00:09:11
Speaker 9: You know, I've never played with a team like this that it's not over until it's over. These guys fight through adversity. We start off slow. Another big penalty game where we're shooting ourselves in the foot. But it seems like guys just get stronger and stronger with every rep.
00:09:24
Speaker 6: Think about Bashaw too today. You know, start off slow, start running the ball, getting downhill. He was a guy who was getting better with every single rep. rep he got. Same thing with Trevor Lawrence.
00:09:32
Speaker 9: And that just shows me the resolve and the toughness and just the experience these guys have been through with being down, being up, and understanding that it's all the same.
00:09:40
Speaker 8: Well, look, man, it was a great play. Great win. Even though it wasn't perfect, found a way to get the fourth win. Congratulations. Thanks so much.
00:09:47
Speaker 6: Thank you.
00:09:48
Speaker 2: Alright, there you go. Bucky Brooks with Amir Abdullah. 53-yard return to set up the game-winning walk-off field goal by Cam Little. That was Bucky in the Everbank Vault. at EverBank Advantage. You, other banks, talk a big game. We deliver big results. Set up your game plan at everbank.com. slash Jaguars. Mike Dempsey, Mark Duffner, we got Fred Taylor here with us as well on the postgame. Fred, just talk about the attention to detail. What Amir Abdullah was referencing there, that you've gamed these situations out, right? Is this like, just go back to your days. I know you didn't play a whole lot of special teams here in Jacksonville, but... Was this something that got coached up and talked about, hey, in these circumstances, know your kicker's range, know when to get down as opposed to try to take that return all the way to the house?
00:10:36
Speaker 7: Hey, listen, I'm going to show love to special teams. I got my start on special teams. I played special teams before I got my first touchdown.
00:10:44
Speaker 4: So it comes with the territory.
00:10:47
Speaker 7: And, you know, the one thing about special teams, Mike, as you know, Coach Duff, you know, that's a group that has to stay ready. They don't get the love, but they have to stay ready. I remember when Coach Del Rio was there, he held one position for the guy that hustled the hardest and played the hardest, and that guy was going to make the team, and that was Montel Owens. But to talk about today's game in terms of situational football, they're very well coached. Again, as I mentioned, they have to be very much prepared for those situations that you just never know when they're going to happen. And twice in this particular game, One during the two-minute mark, punt return. We saw Parker Washington run the clock out to get it below.
00:11:29
Speaker 4: The two-minute warning.
00:11:30
Speaker 7: And here's the amazing heads-up play by Amir Abdullah. First, you have to be able to get to that moment with a great return. And then you have to have the awareness to know where's the clock. These are things you're scouting before the game. Where's the play clock? Where's the game clock? Then the third thing is, as he mentioned, two seconds on the clock, being able to get down and not get greedy or overly excited, full of adrenaline to try to go for a touchdown, but to get down, declare yourself down, which is a play we practice so many times, even with running backs. You can declare yourself down by going down and tapping the ground. And just that heads up, giving them opportunity to give Cam a shot at.
00:12:13
Speaker 4: Winning this game.
00:12:14
Speaker 7: The craziest game I've ever seen, baby. I mean, the lead changes, just everything. Not going for it, going for it. Fourth and one at the one-yard line. Fourth and goal at the one. It's so much stuff in this game that's going to drive any sporecaster.
00:12:31
Speaker 4: This is what they live for. This is the game they want to talk about. It was amazing.
00:12:35
Speaker 2: Oh, we'll be talking about it for quite a while today and all week long, obviously, before the Jags turn around and take on their division rivals. But don't worry about that at least 24 hours from now. There's Fred Taylor with Mark Duffner. I'm Mike Dempsey. We've got plenty more to do here as the Jaguars win it 19-17 over the Philadelphia Eagles. You're listening to Jaguars Postgame on the Jaguars Radio Network. Jaguars postgame brought to you by GEHA, Government Employees Health Association, benefits for federal employees and retirees. Mike Dempsey and Mark Duffner in the Hyundai Studios. Freddie T. joining us from a remote locale. Where are you today, Fred Taylor?
00:13:21
Speaker 4: I'm home.
00:13:21
Speaker 2: Okay, just checking. Wasn't sure.
00:13:23
Speaker 7: Yeah, I am getting myself together. Got a flight coming up. Got a flight to Philly, of all places. And then I'll be leaving from there to head over to London for the week, hitting the ground Wednesday, catch up with the team, got some appearances, you know, got some stuff going on in preparation for the Texans.
00:13:44
Speaker 4: I'm here in Florida right now.
00:13:45
Speaker 2: All right, well, those Duval fans in London are going to be going out of their minds this week, so I'm sure going to be happy to see you. Fred, you referenced this, and Coach, I want you to weigh in on this as well. The decision to not kick the field goals, Fred, I have to believe, and we'll hear from Liam Cohen hopefully coming up here shortly, I have to believe that was influenced by The fact that you lost your long snapper and Devon Hamilton sailed a couple back there. Logan Cook made great saves on those. But I think that Liam Cohen figured, you know what? I think we're just as good going forward here on fourth and goal from the one as we are risking another high snap and maybe not getting any points.
00:14:23
Speaker 4: On the board.
00:14:24
Speaker 7: Yeah, it was twice in the game. One earlier, one later. Both almost cost the game today. You know, it's really strange. I'm still trying to catch up with this whole analytics versus your gut. You know, old school football, the way we were coached, you know, even I think it was the Cowboys game the other night versus Tampa, going for two. In a moment, you're down 14, you're scoring, you go for two. Like, I don't understand that. But In this particular situation, it could have been a bit of not having your long snapper. It could have been a bit of, you know, analytics. I don't know what the computer says. Or it could have been a bit of let's just be the aggressive, smart coach that I am, and I'm going to live by it, and I'm going to die by it. We started a year ago making some gutsy fourth down calls, and I believe the first fourth and one, I'm okay with that one. The last one, because of where they started, I would say they shouldn't have been in that situation. But when you're in that situation, understanding the high snaps were occurring, then I'm okay with him going for it, electing to go for it then, to try to give yourself the lead.
00:15:47
Speaker 2: Well, let's hear from the man himself, Bucky Brooks, standing by with head coach Liam Cohen.
00:15:51
Speaker 5: Bucky?
00:15:52
Speaker 8: Coach, I'm going to ask you a question, but I got to ask this because I talked to Amir Abdullah. He said that you guys have talked about those situations. being able to go down with eight seconds left. He said it's very similar to running Rolex on offense. Can you explain a little bit?
00:16:04
Speaker 10: Yeah, we just, I think Shane Waldron, John Dykema, those guys do a phenomenal job each week of every Wednesday, every Thursday, before practice starts, we're working situational football.
00:16:17
Speaker 5: And it's something new each week, right?
00:16:19
Speaker 10: And so We actually were in that situation this week where we had to do our somewhat desperado.
00:16:26
Speaker 5: Now, it was on offense in a way.
00:16:28
Speaker 10: It wasn't necessarily on kickoff return where it was like, all right, eight seconds left. We're in the minus territory. We had to get desperado. And it's kind of where you pitch it around and do all that stuff. Well, it showed up in a kickoff return. And we talked about, okay, do we take a knee and not, you know, let the offense go out and.
00:16:44
Speaker 5: Try to do it?
00:16:45
Speaker 10: But we had popped the one earlier, right, in the first play of the game. And so we felt like we had confidence in our return unit, in those two guys in the back end. We felt like that was our best chance to go score a touchdown. And almost did, right? Almost truly popped it for a touchdown. And he said, he goes, I was looking at the scoreboard the whole way and knew, man, that I could get down with one second left. So, you know, Buck, it's crazy mental, right? But guys competed and mental toughness prevailed.
00:17:14
Speaker 8: So these games are always difficult, right? Because the world says, hey, you should come and handle this game. Look, it's an easy one, et cetera, et cetera, even though we know the league is a one-score game. It's a fourth-quarter game. Talk about winning a game when you may not have your best.
00:17:28
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
00:17:29
Speaker 10: I mean, well, every time we went positive, we went negative, right? It was like every time we'd have an 8- to 10-yard run, we'd have a penalty. I mean, we'd have 13 again for 100, and it felt like they were all after good plays, right? We'd go positive, we'd go negative. We had them in how many third and XLs defensively and let them off the hook. So I never really felt like we were just getting flat out outplayed. Like, it just never felt that way. We were kicking ourselves in the foot. We're 0 for 3 in the red area.
00:17:58
Speaker 5: And how many of those were inside the five?
00:18:00
Speaker 10: Right?
00:18:00
Speaker 5: So you're in scoring position. What should that game have been? I can't say.
00:18:03
Speaker 10: But to them, 22 yards, rushing. Us 100 plus on that defensive line, I don't care. That's the biggest D line I've seen. I've coached against them at Georgia, when they were at Georgia. And to come out a bit on top, it's it's obviously you always want to live in the process.
00:18:21
Speaker 5: You get so wrapped up in the results.
00:18:24
Speaker 10: But to have one second left and the team still fighting, the team still going through it.
00:18:28
Speaker 5: I mean, I got to be proud of that.
00:18:30
Speaker 8: No, it was really great. And you talk about like the feel that you actually have on the sideline. I'm watching the game. and there was never a field that they could run the ball, so you knew they couldn't run it out. So when you're going for it some of those times, like on fourth and goal instead of kicking, is it because you felt like they couldn't?
00:18:44
Speaker 5: That's right.
00:18:45
Speaker 10: I mean, we had chances to close them, you know, and it's like the way the thing was going, and then obviously it bit us in the butt on the extra point when we did take the lead, right? So it's like, yeah, I could question going for it, kicking field goals, but those field goals weren't guaranteed. They just weren't, and it showed up when we took the lead. So it's like you can say that a million times, but it happened, right? Like we missed an extra point. And that was a thing. That was an issue that we were worried about. And then it was wild on the one that the game winner, he gets.
00:19:21
Speaker 5: Iced, right? It was his best snap of the day. I mean, Bucky, this thing hit him right in the hands. It was perfect.
00:19:29
Speaker 10: So I'm sitting there like, all right, competitive greatness, being at our best when our best is required.
00:19:33
Speaker 5: DM's got this.
00:19:34
Speaker 10: And then the thing goes over his head, and Logan's got to make another play. And so, yeah, it was one of those kind of games, Buck, and proud to come on top.
00:19:42
Speaker 8: You know, but they always talk about great teams have to have one of these games that you overcome in the course of the regular season before you go. What can you take from it? this game to help you going forward?
00:19:51
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, resiliency.
00:19:53
Speaker 10: We talked about mental toughness all week, from on Wednesday in our team meeting to Saturday morning in my team meeting to Saturday night in the team meeting.
00:20:01
Speaker 5: Was all about mental toughness and overcoming.
00:20:04
Speaker 10: I mean, you overcome a kickoff return for a touchdown on the first play of the game. I mean, yeah, we didn't score on that drive, but we had to overcome it, right?
00:20:12
Speaker 5: And so you overcome failing in the red zone. Like we had to overcome failure, right?
00:20:18
Speaker 10: And so when things aren't all going well, when things aren't all perfect, How do we respond? And so, yeah, we're going to need that. This is week five. I mean, we're four and one. It's week five. We're not figured out.
00:20:30
Speaker 5: We don't have all the answers, and we've got to keep learning and growing together.
00:20:34
Speaker 8: Before I let you go, how do you handle this week? highly emotional game. You've got Houston coming in. Is the plan similar to what you do over the course of back home, or do we have a different schedule?
00:20:46
Speaker 10: It's the same exact routine as we are in Jacksonville. Luckily, to come off of a win helps.
00:20:53
Speaker 5: Just morale.
00:20:54
Speaker 10: It helps morale, but we know what Houston is. We know what they're bringing in here. We know what kind of game this is about to be. And We will not look at this as I don't give a crap what their record is.
00:21:08
Speaker 5: I don't care who's playing. I don't care who's not playing.
00:21:11
Speaker 10: We know what kind of game this is about to be, and we're going to have to bring it.
00:21:15
Speaker 5: We're going to have to bring it this week in practice.
00:21:17
Speaker 10: We get to hit again because we really didn't get to practice hard last week. It was one of those weird weeks because we were a little nicked up, and then you got the travel, and so Friday wasn't a fast Friday. We got after it a little bit Thursday, but it was a weird week. Hopefully we can get back to a routine, practice, habits, do our thing. And then we've got a big Houston game this Sunday.
00:21:37
Speaker 8: Oh, man, we're looking forward to it. Congratulations.
00:21:39
Speaker 5: Thanks, Buck.
00:21:40
Speaker 2: All right, there you go. Bucky Brooks with head coach Liam Cohen. The head coach interview presented by GEHA, Government Employees Health Association, benefits for federal employees and retirees. There you go. And, folks, bring home the W. When the Jaguars win, you win a free Whataburger. Guess what? They snuck it out. They win it. The final score, 19-17. Back with more here with Coach Mark Duffner and Fred Taylor. This is the Jaguars postgame show on Jaguars Radio. Jaguars postgame presented by GEHA, Mike Dempsey, Mark Duffner, Fred Taylor from the Hyundai Studios in Jacksonville, and wherever Fred happens to hold court on any given week. We love having him here on the postgame. Guys, PRI Productions, the official event production company of the Jaguars, has everything you need to bring your next idea to life. Visit PRIProductions.com. All right, Coach, let me start with you. We just listened to Liam Cohen. And it sounded like at first he was saying, hey, we want to be aggressive. We want to put them away. We think we can punch it in here. And then as his answer started to evolve, he started to acknowledge, yeah, we're having some problems with the kicks. You had to admit it. So it felt like maybe one foot in each of those kind of buckets as to the rationale for why they didn't take the field goal attack.
00:22:58
Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that's prudent. I mean, we're not privy to being those huddles and to listen to exactly what's going on in game time, if you will. Kudos to Hamilton, though, on just getting the ball back there in any way, shape, or form. I mean, geez, that was a sudden change situation for him. But I'll tell you this right now. Again, I understand where Coach was thinking. It was well explained by him. And I'll tell you, Amir Abdullah did a great job of explaining his mechanics on that kickoff return. A superb play by the kickoff return team. And this team has not given lip service to situational masters. They commit to it in meetings. These players are educated. They're smart. They listen. They are tough, smart, and physical. And I thought that was very well done. So it's not by accident that they made the plays that they did. They commit time to it. They have belief in it. And it shows in terms of how they won this game.
00:23:46
Speaker 2: Yeah, and Freddie, certainly weighing on any of that, you'd like to. But I'd like to ask you about what Liam Cohen said about, hey, I don't care what the numbers are, man. That is as big a defensive line as you're going to go up against. And what did you make of the running game today? They stayed committed to it. 22 carries for Basil Tootin. Ground out 72 yards today. What did you make of the way they ran the ball?
00:24:06
Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't have my little stat tracker.
00:24:09
Speaker 7: I like to track the halftime stats and see how teams tend to go in and make whatever necessary adjustments that will impact the outcome of the game. Whatever it was, I know Basial had around nine carries for 19 yards. Trevor had two carries, and also Chris Rodriguez had two for five. A 12-yarder was called back because of a holding by Jacoby Myers. Still, even with that, being able to understand that we have to find a way to slow Jalen Carter down. You know, he's very active in the pass game, not as active late in the run game. And Jacksonville, they were able to turn back, block him, run some counter plays away from him, cut him off. And Basher was able to get skinny and find those cracks. He showed tremendous patience, poise, a lot of great vision. But more importantly, I think the best asset that he has is his stature, his lower half being able to break tackles.
00:25:14
Speaker 4: Again, I keep saying.
00:25:16
Speaker 7: Man, he's one tackle away from showing everybody that speed as he did a week ago.
00:25:22
Speaker 4: Look forward to it. They're going to come for him.
00:25:25
Speaker 2: Yeah, the speed is there, but he will square you up, Coach, and he'll meet you as you try to meet him in the hole. And you look at Bajel and you're like, he's a small back. No, he's a powerful back is what he is.
00:25:37
Speaker 4: He plays big.
00:25:38
Speaker 3: He plays real big as far as that's concerned. I'll tell you the other thing that's helping our running game today was two times, Trevor Lawrence opted to use his legs. That's going to help a lot of things in the run and pass game. In fact, he had the longest run of the day with a decisive decision he made for 16-yard gain. So all that's going to pay dividends as we move forward.
00:25:59
Speaker 2: Freddie, did you want to add anything to that?
00:26:01
Speaker 7: Yeah, no, I do want to add that that's when the Jaguars are at their best, when they give Trevor sort of like the RPOs when they're putting him out in the pass game. naked bootleg play actions you saw early in the game finding Parker on a little simple dump off on the naked action he took it 51 yards but really quick Mike I just want to say when coach Cohen said live in the process try not to get too worried about the results when he was talking about situational football in preparation if you enjoy the preparation in the process you eventually will have success and that was the one thing coach Coughlin sort of you know sort of beat into us.
00:26:40
Speaker 4: I can't say it any other way than that.
00:26:44
Speaker 7: But eventually, that would separate the good teams from the bad teams, just being prepared for those situations. because they eventually will show up, and you have to be ready to execute.
00:26:54
Speaker 2: All right, plenty more to come here, including an Everbank stats check. Freddie just mentioned Parker Washington's name. We went this far, I think, without mentioning the guy who had an absolutely spectacular day with some amazing catches, six for 124 and a pair of scores. Don't worry, Parker, we will get to you. The Jaguars win it 19-17. This is Jaguars postgame on the Jaguars Radio Network. Jaguars postgame presented by GEHA. Mike Dempsey, Mark Ducker, Fred Taylor here with you from the Hyundai Studios. Guys, before we go any further, let's get an Everbank stats check here. So we'll start with some of the team stats. And you look at some of them and you wonder, how is this game even close? As the Jaguars outgained Philadelphia 408-232. They had a 96-yard advantage in passing yards. They had a 70-yard advantage in rushing yards. No one... is running on this football team this year so far at least. So how do you close the gap? Well, 13 penalties to seven, one turnover to zero, and you've got only the one sack in the game today. Looking at some individual numbers, though, there were some standouts. I mean, Trevor Lawrence, I thought, played really well, even with the interception. They came on a third down that was going nowhere, and they probably would have punted the ball away. So it ended up being kind of empty calories a little bit for Philadelphia. But 24-39, 333, a couple of touchdowns, did have that pick, and a 95 passer rating. So just a really strong play once again. Compare that to Jalen Hurts, 21-40, basically 50%. completion percentage that he threw for 220 with the one score where Cooper split the two defenders after catching about a 20-yard pass. Basil Tootin, as we mentioned, 22 for 72 on the ground. Parker Washington, again, this guy's showing up. Six for 124. Those two touchdowns including a ridiculous one-handed grab on a fourth down throw from Trevor Lawrence. Brenton Strange, once again, chipping in mightily. Seven for 68. Here's Josh Cameron coming on. Three for 43. Jacoby Myers had a couple for 37. On we go. And I guess, really, one of the things you look at is that they couldn't hook up with Brian Thomas, although they tried a few times. Foye and Lewakin led the team with 10 total tackles and the lone sack split by Antonio Johnson and Trayvon Walker. Let's start with some good here. Fred, I'll start with you. Parker Washington. I mean, how many superlatives did Do we need for this guy? He had a quiet game last week, but that is quickly showing to be the exception to the rule right now with him. Freddie, are you muted?
00:29:44
Speaker 8: Yep.
00:29:45
Speaker 4: Sorry about that.
00:29:46
Speaker 7: You have some receivers that go out, you know, and they play lights out, but then you have some receivers that they are game changing and they make spectacular catches, whether it's short balls, Long, deep balls, acrobatic catches. But there are a few of those guys around the NFL, Parker being one of them. And my question is, how long? And I hope this doesn't create a stir. But how long are you going to wait to pay him? Because the longer you wait, you never know what happens because he's having that type of a season. And again, I'm sure they got that all handled when he came on our show last week. He said, look, I don't worry about that. I just show up and play. I let the front office and my agent take care of business. I take care of ball. That's business for me. And yeah, he shows up, man, and he gets it done.
00:30:42
Speaker 2: That's a good t-shirt right there. Parker Washington taking care of ball. Just taking care of ball. He just plays ball, goes about his business, coach. And, you know, you talk about his value to the team. It's incredibly high. Fred's talking about his monetary value, which is going to be high as well. And I wonder, does every time that Brian Thomas kind of receded to the background enhance Parker Washington's negotiating platform?
00:31:06
Speaker 6: I think it does.
00:31:07
Speaker 3: I mean, again, this is a production business. And, geez, Pete, I mean, you talk about the he had today, and not only as a receiver and making the big plays, the 51-yard or the 27-yard touchdown. I mean, awesome plays. But how about the brains and smarts we talked about on the punt return? I mean, what the guy's got in terms of the clock and clock management. I mean, he is everything you want and then some. And, again, he's an attitude to emulate. He's a team-first guy in all that he does. So I think what he brings to the table, wow, what the value is.
00:31:39
Speaker 6: Tremendous.
00:31:39
Speaker 2: All right, let's do this. Let's pause 10 seconds for station identification on the Jacksonville Jaguar radio network. All right, folks, Jag fans, time to bring the energy. The Jags scored in the third quarter, and you score free Culver's Medium Wisconsin Cheese Curds with purchase offer available for Culver's Delicious Rewards members. Coming up next, we've got the Jaguars Radio Network player of the game voting, 19-17. Jags win it over the Eagles in a thriller. This is Jaguars postgame on Jaguars Radio. Jaguars postgame brought to you by GEHA, Government Employees Health Association, benefits for federal employees and retirees. Mike Dempsey, Mark Duffner here in the Hyundai studios. Freddie T joining us via remote from the homestead right now. And guys, it has come to this, the Jaguars radio network player of the game voting. We might have more fun during this segment than any other on the postgame. As we all know, I will get a vote today. Coach Duff will get a vote today. And Freddie T get a vote in half. to ensure that there will be no ties, and we will name a player of the game. Duff, I think we've got some strong candidates today. Who are you going to roll with?
00:33:03
Speaker 3: After much concerning study and just intense study, if you will, I'm going to kind of go with Parker Washington. I'll tell you, there's a lot of worthy candidates, but, geez, six receptions like he had for 124 yards, two magnificent catches, a 51-yard explosive play, I think it was 27-yard one-handed catch, To put us ahead, I mean, what a tremendous game this guy has. And just, again, what he brings to the table in terms of stress for the opponent's defense and leadership and how to play the game for our offense.
00:33:34
Speaker 8: All right.
00:33:34
Speaker 2: Well, you know, I'll say this, Freddie. If I were voting in a vacuum. I would probably agree. If I had the lone vote, I'd probably give it to Parker Washington. But because I don't, and I know it's not going to be decided yet, I'm going to go with Cam Little because when you walk it off from 57 in the National Football League, as Cam let those Eagle fans in the end zone know, you are the man when you do that. So I'm going to give my vote to Cam Little for the walk-off game-winning field goal with zeros on the clock, Fred. So we put it all in your hands. Who is your vote for player of the game today?
00:34:08
Speaker 7: Man, those are two really good votes. You can't go wrong either way. But I'm going to have to agree with Coach Duff and give it to Parker. Without those two touchdowns, I mean, Cam, obviously a great kick. I can easily say without the kick, we're not sitting here with smiles on our faces. But someone had to set that up. And for an offense that wasn't great throughout the course of the game, Those two big plays were not only big plays, they were spectacular, highlight real plays.
00:34:42
Speaker 4: And this is what he does every week. So my vote, my 1.5.
00:34:47
Speaker 2: Yes.
00:34:48
Speaker 4: Is going to go to Parker Washington.
00:34:50
Speaker 6: All right.
00:34:50
Speaker 2: Fair enough. And I think we can all agree. Parker was the guy who was the glue throughout the course of the game coach and the scoreboard show. You and I get to pick a play of the game. Yeah, that's still not going to be a lay down. No, that's right.
00:35:02
Speaker 7: Right.
00:35:03
Speaker 2: I mean, some love for Amir Abdullah on the run back.
00:35:06
Speaker 5: Right.
00:35:07
Speaker 2: I mean, honestly, if we had enough to go around. I'd say Logan Cook for all those catches on those high snaps did a hell of a job out there as well. But regardless, Parker, Washington, six catches, 124 yards, and a pair of touchdowns averaged 20.7 yards. A catch on nine targets today is your Jaguar Radio Network player of the game. Up next, the UF Health Injury Report. Final score, 19-17. Jags on top of the Eagles. This is Jaguars postgame on Jaguars Radio. Jaguars postgame presented by GEHA. Mike Dempsey and Mark Duffner from the Hyundai Studios. Fred Taylor joining us as well for a final few thoughts here. Let's quickly give you the injury report presented by UF Health, the official healthcare partner of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Two of them today that could be significant. We don't know how long-term they will be, but obviously significant. because of who they hit. Ross Matasek injured his left shoulder early in the game, left the game. This is an all-pro long snapper. Yeah, it's a long snapper. Well, you saw today, you know, what a guy pressed into duty, a little bit shaky, and it's understandable. Hopefully the Jags will have that nailed down if Matasek can't play next week. And we just have to hope for the best, Freddie, as Anton Harrison gets carted off with a knee injury. And, you know, you fear for the worst, but you hope for the best in that regard.
00:36:35
Speaker 7: Yeah, I think in both cases, you don't realize how valuable these players are until you lose one of them. You know, we had another long snapper that was great in Joe Zelenka. Those guys, man, you need those guys, man. They contribute a lot. In terms of Anton Harrison, injuries happen, but you hate to see it happen without stuff happening. You know, that was an injury where sort of the turf monster sort of got him.
00:37:05
Speaker 4: And usually when that happens, it's usually the worst. But I don't want to think that way.
00:37:10
Speaker 7: I think a bit more optimistic and hopefully it's more so a hyper extension than the other injury. So hopefully they're back sooner than later. This is a long season to have.
00:37:21
Speaker 2: Fred, we know you're going to go because you've got a plane to catch and you're heading up to Philadelphia. So we expect you to continue to rep all that gear that you have on right there on that flight up there. And that will be very enjoyable for you to throw it up in some Eagle fans' faces. But just your final thought for today, the emotion coming out of this, how quickly can you put that behind you when you've got a very important divisional game coming up next week?
00:37:48
Speaker 7: You know, I think when you look at this young season, only five games in, the type of games that they've been a part of. You look at the Denver game, you go back to there. They had to learn and make adjustments from that game. These last two weeks, when you talk about mental toughness was the theme that Coach Cohen mentioned there and his presser with Bucky.
00:38:10
Speaker 4: They still have to get better in that.
00:38:11
Speaker 7: Department because these penalties, again, You won't be able to skate the entire season with getting 13 penalties per game. You're doing it versus clubs that aren't that great. You're a very good team, but you don't want to bring your play down because of those type of things. So clean the penalties up. Go clean up the operations. Get the plays out. You want to be at the line of scrimmage with about 15 seconds so these guys can operate and be efficient the way that they have shown that they can be. So I think the coach is going to look at Everything across the board. Let the players enjoy this one. But say, look, we got to get back to it. You know, mediocrity lives in comfort. We don't want to be there enjoying it.
00:38:58
Speaker 4: But we have to get back to work.
00:39:00
Speaker 8: All right.
00:39:00
Speaker 2: Well, for us today, Fred, happy to celebrate a win with you. Safe travels. Have a great week in London. And enjoy that Duval spirit over the next seven days before those hated Texans come callin'..
00:39:13
Speaker 7: You better believe it. I have some fish and chips. Well, actually, I don't eat fish, but I'll have the chips.
00:39:18
Speaker 2: Have the chips, man.
00:39:19
Speaker 4: You ain't coach. See y'all in a bit.
00:39:23
Speaker 2: Duval. Duval. All right, there he goes, the legend, Freddie T. We salute you, sir, on your way out. the door. Coach, we'll come back with some final thoughts of our own here as the Jaguars wrap it up with a nail-biter of a win, 19-17 over the Philadelphia Eagles. This is Jaguars Postgame on the Jaguars Radio Network. All right, final moments here on Jaguars postgame brought to you by GEHA, Government Employees Health Association benefits for federal employees and retirees. Freddie Taylor has... bid us adieu and he's on his travels it'll take him to London next week we still got him up on the screen there yes we saw a smiling face there for a second coach you can leave Fred up we don't mind Freddie T you know we can just put Fred up in place of me amen that would probably be better for everybody watching at home on jaguars.com coach same question I kind of asked Fred you got to put it behind you quickly right you celebrate this But you also recognize that there's a lot of cleaning up to do. And if Philadelphia had been full strength today, who knows what the outcome might have been.
00:40:35
Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, there's always all those kind of ifs right now. The bottom line is we won the game. As Coach mentioned, this team showed resilience. It showed mental toughness. It showed trust and belief. You don't win a game on the very last play of the game without having those things.
00:40:49
Speaker 6: So they faced adversity. I think they're going to learn from that.
00:40:53
Speaker 3: Again, one of the keys coming into the game with this penalty situation is, again, we've got to clean those things up. You can't beat yourselves. You've got to beat the opponent. That'll be a big focus as they prepare for Houston this week.
00:41:04
Speaker 2: Well, for today, they didn't quite beat themselves. They tried.
00:41:08
Speaker 6: Amen.
00:41:08
Speaker 2: They tried, but they pulled it out in the end, 19-17 over Philadelphia. For those on our flagship station, 1010XL. In Jacksonville, we invite you to stick around. The scoreboard show coming up next. And for those on the network outside of Jacksonville, join us on Jaguars.com or the Jaguars YouTube channel for Fred Taylor and Mark Duffner and our entire crew, including Linda Fortunato, Donna Murphy, Tony Smith, and Max Hockman. I'm Mike Dempsey saying goodbye for now. Final score, 19-17, Jags on top on the Jaguars radio network.
