OM DENNE EPISODE
America needs more energy. AI, data centers, advanced manufacturing and electrification are all driving demand at the same time that companies are working to modernize operations, control costs and reduce emissions. Building more generation and grid capacity is part of the answer. But so is getting much more out of the energy and infrastructure we already have.
In this episode of the Optimistic Outlook, Erika Gupta, Global Head of Sustainability at Siemens Financial Services, is joined by Anna Celsing, Chief Sustainability Officer at Alfa Laval, to explore why energy efficiency and electrification work best together—and how combining them can help companies reduce energy demand, lower costs and accelerate progress.
The logic is straightforward: before investing in more power, companies should understand how much energy they actually need. Making buildings, factories and infrastructure more efficient can reduce demand and operating costs.
Electrifying those systems can then make them cleaner and more flexible. Done together, the two strategies can reduce the amount of new capacity required and make investments go further.
The technology exists. The harder question is how to put it to work at scale. Efficiency projects can offer strong returns and still struggle to compete for capital against investments tied more directly to revenue growth. But new financing models, digital technologies and different approaches to capital planning are beginning to change that equation.
The conversation covers:
· What electrifying an industrial facility actually involves, in practical terms
· What happens when a company electrifies a site without first addressing efficiency
· Why efficiency projects with strong returns can still struggle to get funded
· The role CEOs and CFOs play in moving efficiency from commitment to capital
· What an operator can act on now, without waiting for the next capital cycle
As energy demand grows, meeting it will require more than building more. This is a practical conversation about how efficiency and electrification can work together to help companies get more from the energy they use—and move faster toward the infrastructure they need.
