00:00:01.600 --> 00:00:14.720
Welcome to Off Script, a conversation with no fakes, no filters, just real conversations about how faith and flesh meet in the everyday life, where we experience a God who made us on purpose for his purpose.
00:00:14.960 --> 00:00:16.239
This is Off Script.
00:00:16.399 --> 00:00:17.600
Let's talk.
00:00:21.120 --> 00:00:23.280
Hey, welcome if you're a parent joining in with us.
00:00:23.359 --> 00:00:26.160
Uh, this is a conversation for parents, from parents.
00:00:26.239 --> 00:00:32.479
Uh, and this is maybe you we got a room full of life group leaders that pour into students every single week.
00:00:32.560 --> 00:00:35.359
And so we just kind of want to hear from them and hear a little bit of their stories.
00:00:35.520 --> 00:00:38.640
We're gonna walk through Colossians 1, 15 through 29.
00:00:38.719 --> 00:00:46.960
We got Kimberly's in here, Jeremy's in here, and my wife Brittany is on here with us, and we got an empty chair for any of the you know 15 people that are in the room if they want to come jump up here as well.
00:00:47.039 --> 00:00:51.520
And so Kimberly's gonna start out, she's gonna read a little bit of the passage so you kind of know where we're gonna be.
00:00:51.600 --> 00:00:54.640
Don't just listen to us talk about it, but we want you to go read it as well.
00:00:54.719 --> 00:00:57.200
But Kimberly would jump in uh to the passage.
00:00:57.520 --> 00:00:58.640
All right, verse 15.
00:00:59.039 --> 00:01:23.280
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation, for by him all things were created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things were created through him and for him, and he is before all things, and in him all things hold together, and he is the head of the body the church, he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
00:01:23.519 --> 00:01:33.680
For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
00:01:33.920 --> 00:01:57.120
And you who were once alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he is now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.
00:01:57.359 --> 00:02:18.560
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is the church, of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you to make the word of God fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations, but now revealed to his saints.
00:02:18.879 --> 00:02:27.360
To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
00:02:27.599 --> 00:02:38.879
Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ, for this I told, struggling with all his energy, that he powerfully works within me.
00:02:39.199 --> 00:02:39.520
Amen.
00:02:39.680 --> 00:02:51.120
I would say that is a passage that if you've never read it before, uh, if you read it, and the slower you read it and the more you read it, every time you will find something new that you missed every single time with this passage.
00:02:51.199 --> 00:02:55.120
It goes back to I mean, answer this question.
00:02:55.439 --> 00:03:01.280
When your family thinks about the Lord, what's the first thing that comes to your mind?
00:03:01.599 --> 00:03:04.960
That is the most important thing about your family right there.
00:03:05.039 --> 00:03:06.000
What comes to your mind?
00:03:06.159 --> 00:03:12.960
And so when we open up this passage and it talks about that Christ is supreme, he's supreme in your life.
00:03:13.039 --> 00:03:23.840
Uh, we just got finished with a good conversation about as a parent, you know, how do how do we, what are the things that we struggle with to make to have this idea that the Lord is supreme over everything in my life?
00:03:24.080 --> 00:03:32.159
He is not just a fortune cookie that all of a sudden you just go to and you just read in Proverbs or you read something in Psalms, like, oh well, this is a good advice right here.
00:03:32.319 --> 00:03:39.439
He is supreme over every aspect of your life, he over everything, and how that funnels down to your kids.
00:03:39.520 --> 00:03:51.919
I and so maybe this could open up the conversation of how do we allow and how do we, you know, get into a kid's mind or a teenager's mind that the Lord is supreme.
00:03:52.400 --> 00:03:53.120
He is supreme.
00:03:53.199 --> 00:04:02.400
And I that's probably first of all how we act first, but more importantly, like I mean, uh you see anxiousness uh skyrocket with teenagers now.
00:04:02.719 --> 00:04:17.759
You see this anxiety that it's a constant flow of I mean, think about it's it's I mean, even in our student ministry, uh the majority of kids are on some kind of an anxiety medicine.
00:04:18.399 --> 00:04:20.879
You know, and twenty years ago that wasn't the case.
00:04:21.279 --> 00:04:26.079
And so how how do you put instill into a generation like that that the Lord is supreme?
00:04:26.480 --> 00:04:30.399
You know, it all things come down to him and what he allows to happen.
00:04:31.519 --> 00:04:33.600
I think some of that just begins with us.
00:04:33.759 --> 00:04:35.759
Like we have to model that for our kids.
00:04:35.920 --> 00:04:47.040
And so I think when we're walking through a situation that might seem like it should, you know, stress us out or cause us to have anxiety, they're looking to us just to kind of see how, you know, how did mom and dad, how do we handle this?
00:04:47.279 --> 00:04:56.959
And I think we even talk about this with our, you know, my seventh grade girls life group, but you know, especially as a female, like we are just we're so emotional and our emotions are up and down and everywhere.
00:04:57.040 --> 00:05:06.240
And just a reminder that like how we feel, like that's not always what truth is, and that the only thing that's true is what God's word says.
00:05:06.480 --> 00:05:13.839
And so I just have to have guardrails on myself of like as a parent, of you know, what does God's word say?
00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:20.079
And always go back to Philippians 4.8 when it talks about, you know, whatever is true, whatever is pure, whatever is kind.
00:05:20.160 --> 00:05:25.680
And I and I really just have to say each of those things and and what I'm thinking, is that this?
00:05:25.759 --> 00:05:27.279
Like, and what I'm thinking, is it true?
00:05:27.439 --> 00:05:28.079
Is it noble?
00:05:28.160 --> 00:05:28.720
Is it pure?
00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:29.439
Is it lovely?
00:05:29.519 --> 00:05:30.480
Is it commendable?
00:05:30.639 --> 00:05:37.600
And I just have to think like if if it's not, and if it if my thoughts aren't lining up to what God's word says, then that's not what truth is.
00:05:37.839 --> 00:05:44.480
And yeah, I would I wonder if if okay, well then in the passage it says, in in him all things hold together.
00:05:44.720 --> 00:05:48.399
You know, Kimberly, why how it in him all things hold together?
00:05:48.560 --> 00:05:51.839
How how does that instill into a a 14-year-old?
00:05:52.399 --> 00:06:06.399
Well, when I was thinking about this verse in particular, I had been thinking about it for several days, just about that that Christ in him, he was before creation, he was the agent of creation, and now he sustains and holds everything together.
00:06:06.480 --> 00:06:08.800
And so I had focused a lot of my attention on that.
00:06:09.279 --> 00:06:19.120
But this morning, just in talking with the Lord, I kind of did the flip on that, and it's like it's not Kimberly that holds all things together.
00:06:19.360 --> 00:06:19.759
Yeah.
00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:24.720
And so to me, that's very freeing because with so many things going on, we've had a very busy season.
00:06:25.040 --> 00:06:30.639
Wait, when you okay, when you say that, do you is that like a a weekly thing that you have to do, or is that something like just seasonal?
00:06:30.720 --> 00:06:34.800
Like, hey, you know, in this season I need to know this, or is this like a is that like a daily grind for you?
00:06:34.879 --> 00:06:49.040
I mean, it's probably different for everybody, but well, I mean, this is something that daily that you would need to focus on because I think as parents, I know especially I, you know, we have I have issues with control and I want to control things and it has been a daily exercise.
00:06:49.199 --> 00:07:02.000
Our kids range range in age from 22 to 16, and so as they're getting older and leaving the house, it's daily learning that it's not up to me to hold my family together, that it's him.
00:07:02.319 --> 00:07:09.920
And so for me, I having to let go of that and having to let go of the control of all the of the small things and trust him in that.
00:07:10.160 --> 00:07:16.160
And I was reminded this week of a verse because to me that helps me rest because I think as parents, we get burned out.
00:07:16.240 --> 00:07:20.000
Yeah, we get exhausted, and I think a lot of people Brittany gets burned out.
00:07:20.079 --> 00:07:22.079
I don't, I feel like I'm at plenty of energy all the time.
00:07:22.240 --> 00:07:22.399
Yeah.
00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:29.759
So I mean, you can really you just get tired, and I get tired, and sometimes I talk to people about taking to the bed, like I'm just gonna take to the bed on this.
00:07:29.839 --> 00:07:31.519
And I have done that once in the past month.
00:07:31.680 --> 00:07:33.199
I just actually took to the bed.
00:07:33.439 --> 00:07:43.600
Um, but if we if we let Christ hold that burden for us, it reminds me of Matthew 11, 28, come to me who all who are weary and heavy laden, and I'm gonna give you rest.
00:07:43.839 --> 00:07:48.399
Yeah, he he said the Lord says he is he is he is the head of the body, you know.
00:07:48.959 --> 00:07:55.839
And it Jeremy, if you if we're if we're going to he's the head of the body, okay, and we're applying that to what Kimberly just talked about.
00:07:55.920 --> 00:08:01.839
Like when you're you're trying to figure out the order and you know, like it doesn't rely, everything's not relying on me.
00:08:01.920 --> 00:08:04.240
You know, like the Lord isn't like where does that apply to somebody?
00:08:04.319 --> 00:08:05.199
That's verse 18.
00:08:05.439 --> 00:08:10.319
Yeah, so what really stuck out in verse 18 for me where it says, you know, he's the head of the body of the church, okay?
00:08:10.399 --> 00:08:22.560
And a lot of times as a parent, I know I've struggled with you feel like an immense pressure, like everything's on you to, you know, make sure your kids are, you know, hey, look, are they reading their Bible enough?
00:08:22.720 --> 00:08:33.120
Are they, you know, it's like it is our responsibility to start that, like Jeff said earlier, you know, it's our responsibility to kind of like plant that, so that, you know, till the garden or whatever.
00:08:33.279 --> 00:08:39.039
So but what it what stood out to me in this is that he's the head of the church, right?
00:08:39.360 --> 00:08:47.360
So that, you know, I feel like it's important as parents that we're not, you know, we've got to realize we're not raising our kids alone.
00:08:47.440 --> 00:08:54.799
You know, that's what I like so much about the baby dedication, you know, stuff that we do here, because you're saying, hey, look, I need your help.
00:08:54.879 --> 00:08:56.080
I need you to come along beside me.
00:08:56.159 --> 00:09:02.399
You know, it's good to have friends and mentors, youth ministers, children's ministers, and all that to come along beside you.
00:09:02.480 --> 00:09:04.080
So you feel like the pressure isn't all on you.
00:09:04.320 --> 00:09:12.639
Well, you got those milestones that you walk through, like, okay, when a kid goes from elementary school to middle school, that's a milestone for them.
00:09:12.799 --> 00:09:15.919
But for you as the parent, it's also a milestone for you.
00:09:16.080 --> 00:09:16.480
Right, right.
00:09:16.639 --> 00:09:24.799
When your kids learning how to drive or going to drive, like it's a milestone, but hey, when they pull out of that driveway, tell me it ain't a milestone for you.
00:09:24.879 --> 00:09:35.759
You know, like I mean, it's one of those two where I mean, there's small milestones you get, like when a kid can buckle their own self up, you know, when they can, I don't know, when they can pick the spoon up and feed themselves.
00:09:35.840 --> 00:09:36.639
That's huge, you know.
00:09:36.720 --> 00:09:40.960
Like when they can go potty on their own, you know, like when they can do their own laundry.
00:09:41.200 --> 00:09:42.399
When they can wipe their own tail.
00:09:42.559 --> 00:09:43.200
You know what I'm saying?
00:09:43.279 --> 00:09:50.960
Like that, all these things are these are all great milestones that you you need to walk around people that have walked through that before.
00:09:51.120 --> 00:09:54.399
You can't just think, well, you know, I don't I don't know how to do this.
00:09:54.480 --> 00:09:56.960
Well, can they what time should curfew be?
00:09:57.200 --> 00:09:57.360
Right.
00:09:57.679 --> 00:10:00.559
It truly does take a village because you know, we're all doing this for the first time.
00:10:00.639 --> 00:10:06.240
And I it took me a long time to realize when I actually when I had kids that my parents had no idea what they were doing.
00:10:06.320 --> 00:10:08.320
They were just doing the best they could, you know what I mean?
00:10:08.559 --> 00:10:10.960
So I kind of feel like we're in the same situation.
00:10:11.039 --> 00:10:13.519
We're uh they're looking at me for answers and I don't have them.
00:10:13.600 --> 00:10:14.639
You know what I mean?
00:10:14.960 --> 00:10:23.120
But what I try to do is, you know, Deuteronomy 6, 6 and 7 says where parents are called to teach about God, you know, as you're going through day-to-day life.
00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:26.320
When you get up in the morning, when you go to bed at night, as you're walking along through the day.
00:10:26.559 --> 00:10:32.960
And, you know, the we do that faithfully, and we just kind of lean on God, count on him to do the heart-changing work.
00:10:33.039 --> 00:10:54.399
You know, we can I 19 through 23 in this passage that Kimberly read is uh so I think some people would have the thought of maybe generational sin would come up in this, or maybe my family's apart from the Lord.
00:10:54.720 --> 00:11:05.840
You know, like we we have the Lord is not supreme in our life, like a sport is supreme, you know, or money is supreme, or our house is supreme, or our status is supreme.
00:11:06.000 --> 00:11:10.240
And you've really said, you know, that's really not got us anywhere except for anxiety.
00:11:10.559 --> 00:11:20.159
You know, the fact that I tried to make this, you know, my job supreme in our family has caught a lot of anxiety between my wife and I.
00:11:20.399 --> 00:11:34.320
Okay, well, if that's how you're gonna feel, that's that's gonna carry down to your kids, you know, like, but then you might have some groups or some families that come and say, Hey, my whole family, all the way to my grandparents, have been a just a failure.
00:11:34.480 --> 00:11:36.159
Like marriages are apart.
00:11:36.320 --> 00:11:40.559
Everybody's striving for something, everybody's falling apart, everybody struggles with this sin.
00:11:40.720 --> 00:11:43.759
This is uh this is a sin that cannot be reconciled.
00:11:43.840 --> 00:11:48.960
You know, this is just my future of family that struggles with fill in the blank.
00:11:49.120 --> 00:11:49.679
You know, babe.
00:11:49.759 --> 00:11:53.759
So what do you for 19 through 23, where where do where do you where do you give guidance?
00:11:54.000 --> 00:12:04.960
Well, I think just important for us, for our kids to know that we're not perfect and that, I mean, we were it says, you know, we were all once alienated enemies in our own minds because of our behavior.
00:12:05.120 --> 00:12:08.399
And so apart from Christ, like we're we're just we're not perfect.
00:12:08.559 --> 00:12:11.840
Like it's his blood, it's the cross that redeems us.
00:12:12.080 --> 00:12:20.960
And I think it's just important for our kids to know that and just for sometimes we need to be the ones to apologize and to say, like, hey, I don't, I don't have it all together.
00:12:21.120 --> 00:12:24.559
Like, we're not perfect parents and in preparing for this.
00:12:24.720 --> 00:12:31.039
A couple of nights ago at dinner, I was asking our kids, just knowing I was gonna get like the nicest answer ever.
00:12:31.200 --> 00:12:41.120
And I was like, Hey, you know, y'all, Holland Fan Rack, can y'all remember a time where like I said that I was sorry, like I did something wrong, and I said I was sorry, and they all busted out laughing.
00:12:41.200 --> 00:12:43.360
They were like, No, mom, you were never wrong.
00:12:43.440 --> 00:12:44.960
Like you say you're never wrong.
00:12:45.120 --> 00:12:45.919
Like I had never been.
00:12:46.320 --> 00:12:50.320
I wish I would have recorded this conversation so bad when it was happening.
00:12:50.799 --> 00:12:52.240
I don't think, well, again, like at least.
00:12:52.720 --> 00:12:53.519
No, guys, there's a time.
00:12:53.759 --> 00:12:55.039
Think about it when I have been wrong.
00:12:55.200 --> 00:12:55.679
Think about it.
00:12:55.759 --> 00:12:56.639
Think real hard, guys.
00:12:56.720 --> 00:12:57.440
There's been a time.
00:12:57.600 --> 00:12:59.440
Everyone's like, no, there has not, mom.
00:12:59.679 --> 00:13:02.720
You've never been a there has been a time.
00:13:02.879 --> 00:13:05.840
You you don't understand there has been a time.
00:13:06.960 --> 00:13:11.440
And then she was looking at me, and I just thought, you didn't ask me.
00:13:13.759 --> 00:13:14.639
So I guess I need a word.
00:13:14.960 --> 00:13:18.000
Then I said, Oh, has there been a time that dad has said he was sorry?
00:13:18.559 --> 00:13:20.240
Everybody's like, Yeah, all the time, Dad.
00:13:23.519 --> 00:13:25.519
Anyway, I don't even know where that was just funny.
00:13:26.000 --> 00:13:30.639
You know, we but we all uh parenting-wise, we're all we're all different.
00:13:31.120 --> 00:13:35.279
Uh even uh Brittany and I, we we are we are different parents.
00:13:35.519 --> 00:13:38.240
I mean, we're we're just wired differently as well.
00:13:38.399 --> 00:13:40.879
It doesn't mean that a better parent or she's a better parent.
00:13:41.120 --> 00:13:43.840
I mean, take for instance today, we just got out of a service.
00:13:44.080 --> 00:13:53.840
It's not in part of my notes, I'm just thinking about this, but it wouldn't the guy that was preaching, Draper, or one of our pastors was preaching, and he gave a visual of a whiteboard.
00:13:54.320 --> 00:13:57.039
And there was just two formulas on the whiteboard.
00:13:57.200 --> 00:14:01.679
And as soon as he put it up there, my wife just started writing down what he had put on there.
00:14:01.840 --> 00:14:04.559
The first thing that went through my mind is there's not white chalk on that board.
00:14:04.639 --> 00:14:06.879
Like there's yellow chalk, blue chalk, red chalk.
00:14:07.039 --> 00:14:08.320
There's not white chalk on that board.
00:14:08.399 --> 00:14:09.519
That's not a real picture.
00:14:09.679 --> 00:14:13.440
Like, there's it's a chalk board with white writing, and there's no white chalk.
00:14:13.600 --> 00:14:15.279
You know, like that's the first thing that went through my mind.
00:14:15.600 --> 00:14:15.679
Right.
00:14:15.919 --> 00:14:19.600
And Brittany's over there writing, Life without the Lord equals the wrong answer.
00:14:19.759 --> 00:14:24.559
You know, like she's writing down the book what you're supposed to write, and I'm thinking, well, get some white chalk on there, man.
00:14:24.639 --> 00:14:25.120
Come on.
00:14:25.279 --> 00:14:33.600
Like, dude, you can't write that without, you know, like, and we're just it that's that's just a small scenario, a step of like, we're we're different, we're gonna see things different.
00:14:33.759 --> 00:14:35.759
Doesn't mean she's better or I'm better.
00:14:35.919 --> 00:14:41.120
And I think that kind of goes to a little bit of a conversation we had a little bit earlier.
00:14:41.200 --> 00:14:50.320
I think Kimberly, you mentioned it, uh when I'm not ever going to look at my kid and say, hey man, we're just not gonna tell your mom.
00:14:50.639 --> 00:14:54.799
Okay, or hey, we're not gonna tell your mom, or she's not gonna say, hey, we're not gonna tell your dad.
00:14:55.039 --> 00:14:59.600
And this idea that you can, you know, you you can live a secret life.
00:14:59.759 --> 00:15:03.039
We can live this secret life because I'm gonna tell my wife everything.
00:15:03.200 --> 00:15:04.240
I'm gonna tell her everything.
00:15:04.399 --> 00:15:12.000
I'm I mean, I'll find the right time, but I'll I'm gonna tell her everything because our authority is my authority, is not her and her authority is not me.
00:15:12.080 --> 00:15:13.039
It's the Lord.
00:15:13.279 --> 00:15:14.159
That's what it is.
00:15:14.320 --> 00:15:19.279
And so because he reigns supreme, it's not what I want to do, it's what the Lord has commanded us to do.
00:15:19.440 --> 00:15:25.519
It's not just what I feel like this is gonna be the right thing, it's what I what what what I know the Lord has commanded us to do.
00:15:25.679 --> 00:15:32.879
And and I don't know if you guys want to jump into a little bit of that conversation of you're different, but you both have the same authority.
00:15:33.200 --> 00:15:35.440
You know, you might discipline differently.
00:15:35.759 --> 00:15:38.639
It you're the tone of your voice might be different, you know.
00:15:38.720 --> 00:15:42.159
It doesn't mean somebody cares less or somebody cares more.
00:15:43.120 --> 00:15:44.799
I'm gonna say this, I'll I'll be quiet.
00:15:45.600 --> 00:15:51.600
This was a big conversation when Brittany and I first had Finn, our oldest, who's 13 now.
00:15:52.240 --> 00:15:53.919
She carried him for nine months.
00:15:54.799 --> 00:15:57.120
You know, like they had a bond that I did not have.
00:15:57.440 --> 00:15:57.679
Okay.
00:15:58.480 --> 00:16:11.200
And when she had him, she was very protective of him, you know, like and not to a point that was unhealthy, but it would you could just tell there was a special connection there that I did not have yet, you know.
00:16:11.600 --> 00:16:16.399
And I had to remind her, I don't know, the first six months we had Finn.
00:16:16.960 --> 00:16:22.240
You know how he's he's my son, and I I love him and I want to protect him and I care for him just as much as you do.
00:16:22.480 --> 00:16:23.759
I'm just gonna be different.
00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:30.480
And that was a learning experience of like, I I do like I'm gonna do things with him that you think that's not safe.
00:16:30.720 --> 00:16:31.519
I I care about him.
00:16:31.679 --> 00:16:33.759
I'm gonna protect him, I'm gonna be around him.
00:16:33.919 --> 00:16:35.279
We're very different.
00:16:35.840 --> 00:16:45.759
And you know, where you thought, oh, we're gonna parent just alike and we're gonna be all that like we we do have there's some standards that we don't cross, but there are some things that we are different on.
00:16:46.080 --> 00:16:50.799
And they're not unhealthy, but it was just a reminder of like, I I love them too.
00:16:51.200 --> 00:16:59.440
And that that took a season of learning, you know, I care for them too, you know, and I I want to be with them and I want to walk with them.
00:16:59.600 --> 00:17:02.159
And, you know, there'd probably be a healthy balance there.
00:17:02.480 --> 00:17:13.039
Well, I've learned over the years, Tracy and I, we definitely parent differently, but I have learned from his wisdom, I'm the person who I want things to be addressed yesterday.
00:17:13.119 --> 00:17:15.839
Like if there's a problem, I want it handled immediately.
00:17:15.920 --> 00:17:17.359
And I'm a lot of words.
00:17:17.519 --> 00:17:20.880
So when I talk to when I talk to my kids, there's lots of words.
00:17:20.960 --> 00:17:25.359
And then at some point I realize, Kimberly, you've said that three times now and they're glazing over.
00:17:25.519 --> 00:17:27.759
And so that's how I tend to be.
00:17:27.839 --> 00:17:31.279
But over the years, I have tried to learn from Tracy's example.
00:17:31.440 --> 00:17:41.279
And so it might seem that I care more or that things are more important to me because I have more to say about it, or maybe I'm louder about it, or I want to handle it right now.
00:17:41.440 --> 00:17:46.400
But there's wisdom with what Tracy does is he measures his words carefully.
00:17:46.559 --> 00:17:48.079
And I've learned that over the years.
00:17:48.240 --> 00:18:00.480
And he said something to me a few years ago, and I've really tried to take that to heart because he said, when I talk, when he talks to our daughter, he says, I measure my words with her because I know that she values what I say and puts importance on it.
00:18:00.640 --> 00:18:03.200
And so we're not going to carelessly speak to our children.
00:18:03.359 --> 00:18:12.240
And so that really helps me guard myself because I say too much and I talk too much and I give my opinion and I need to step back from that a little bit.
00:18:12.400 --> 00:18:14.720
And so, you know, we care in different ways.
00:18:14.880 --> 00:18:17.759
I more step in immediately, he more observes.
00:18:18.400 --> 00:18:22.000
And then in his time when he has the opportunity, he addresses things with them.
00:18:22.160 --> 00:18:26.720
So he addresses usually when I address things with the children, everybody knows that I have.
00:18:26.880 --> 00:18:32.400
But, you know, Tracy, he takes them out, like they go eat and and has and he has those difficult conversations with them.
00:18:32.559 --> 00:18:39.359
So I think that it it's a good, it's a blend of both because, like you said, we both love our kids, um, but we approach it in different ways.
00:18:39.519 --> 00:18:41.440
I'm more, let's talk things through.
00:18:41.599 --> 00:18:43.119
I mean, we're gonna pray over it.
00:18:43.279 --> 00:18:46.160
We're gonna, you know, I'm probably gonna give you a Bible verse about it.
00:18:46.400 --> 00:18:49.039
And it's more of an immediate thing when I see a problem.
00:18:49.200 --> 00:18:58.720
But over the years I've come to appreciate very much Tracy's role in that he takes his time, he measures his word, he prays before he speaks, and that's really important.
00:18:59.119 --> 00:19:06.880
So, okay, maybe Jeremy, Brittany, maybe you guys jump into this part of okay, so then you're not just trying to raise just a good kid.
00:19:07.039 --> 00:19:12.799
You know, I mean, they one kid might go say, Well, I'm I I need some shoes, I'm gonna go talk to dad.
00:19:12.960 --> 00:19:13.440
You know what I'm saying?
00:19:13.519 --> 00:19:18.799
Like, or I, you know, like I got a girl issue, you know, I'm I'm talking to mom, I'm not talking to dad.
00:19:18.880 --> 00:19:20.000
You know, he's gonna think it's a joke.
00:19:20.079 --> 00:19:27.200
You know, like what, you know, like you you people might choose to go talk to somebody else than the other, or you might discipline differently.
00:19:27.680 --> 00:19:33.920
These are all okay, but when it comes to like this thought of, well, I'm I'm just trying to raise a good kid.
00:19:34.079 --> 00:19:36.400
You know, I just want them to win the character award.
00:19:36.559 --> 00:19:39.119
I just you know, I'm I just want to raise a good kid.
00:19:39.839 --> 00:19:43.680
Is that is that showing the Lord's supremacy in your life?
00:19:43.839 --> 00:19:46.960
Is man, I just want to raise a kid that's got good character, you know?
00:19:47.279 --> 00:19:48.960
I just want to raise somebody good.
00:19:51.759 --> 00:19:53.599
Well, I you know, I don't think so.
00:19:53.839 --> 00:20:06.720
I think that our our job is to raise, you know, Ray, hey, listen, raising a spectacular student or a uh a great talented athlete, that's awesome, but that shouldn't be the end goal.
00:20:06.880 --> 00:20:14.960
Our end goal is to raise people that they they put Christ at the center of everything, and that's what their focus is on.
00:20:15.200 --> 00:20:22.000
Because all the things we just had this conversation a couple of weeks ago at our house that listen, we've been blessed, okay?
00:20:22.079 --> 00:20:23.519
I've I've been blessed with a good job.
00:20:23.599 --> 00:20:25.839
I can provide for my family and everything.
00:20:26.079 --> 00:20:27.920
But all that can be taken away.
00:20:28.160 --> 00:20:29.839
Like the world could take all that away.
00:20:29.920 --> 00:20:35.680
We could lose the house, we could lose everything, but what can't be taken away is my name's written in the Lamb's book of life, right?
00:20:35.839 --> 00:20:39.119
So my salvation is eternal, and that's what we need to focus on.
00:20:39.200 --> 00:20:44.319
Not the things like, yeah, if you're a great athlete, you might, you know, go to the NFL and make a bunch of money.
00:20:44.480 --> 00:20:48.480
But at the end of the day, that's not, you know, hey, that all that's temporary.
00:20:48.640 --> 00:20:49.519
All of it's temporary.
00:20:49.599 --> 00:20:54.559
So we need to be trying to not just good kids, because I want my kids to be good, I want them to do well in school.
00:20:54.720 --> 00:20:54.880
Yeah.
00:20:55.200 --> 00:20:58.400
But more importantly, I want them to see Christ in the center of everything.
00:20:58.640 --> 00:20:59.119
Yeah, okay.
00:20:59.279 --> 00:21:04.880
It's almost like the thought of you your kid can hit a curveball because you taught him that, but he doesn't know how to hit a curveball in life.
00:21:05.039 --> 00:21:05.759
Doesn't it?
00:21:05.839 --> 00:21:06.000
Yeah.
00:21:06.160 --> 00:21:13.359
Like he can tell you the lineup for this year's Alabama football team, but they can't tell you five scriptures.
00:21:13.519 --> 00:21:13.680
Right.
00:21:13.839 --> 00:21:16.000
You know, like you, you, you are pouring into them.
00:21:16.079 --> 00:21:17.599
You are pouring great things.
00:21:17.680 --> 00:21:19.279
I mean, it's great to know who all's playing.
00:21:19.599 --> 00:21:20.400
Yeah, there's nothing wrong with it.
00:21:20.559 --> 00:21:21.680
There's nothing wrong with those things.
00:21:21.839 --> 00:21:28.240
But if that if your kid doesn't know how to pick up the sword and use it, I would say that's your training.
00:21:28.319 --> 00:21:29.440
You you you've got to train it.
00:21:29.519 --> 00:21:32.480
You can't be like, well, I'm just gonna drop them off a student ministry, hope they figure this out.
00:21:32.559 --> 00:21:32.799
Right.
00:21:32.880 --> 00:21:42.240
Like you we we gotta be the ones to say, hey, this is how I use this book, and this is what I do, and this is and you know, obviously the the older they get, it looks a little different, you know.
00:21:42.480 --> 00:21:49.839
But what okay, what's some realistic ways of how someone can say, well, I want to put this into practice now?
00:21:50.079 --> 00:21:51.599
Like how how does that look?
00:21:53.119 --> 00:21:54.079
What you think, man?
00:21:55.039 --> 00:22:07.039
Well, I think kind of what we talked about earlier, just like frequent forgiveness, like asking clearly I need to work on that, but just like letting them know that we're not perfect and that's what do you want me to say when you need to work on it?
00:22:07.279 --> 00:22:10.079
This isn't one of those times that a code word, you know.
00:22:13.519 --> 00:22:19.200
And just asking your kids questions like weekly, like where did you see Jesus work in your life this week?
00:22:19.599 --> 00:22:20.880
Asking them questions like that.
00:22:20.960 --> 00:22:32.640
And I like what Jeremy said earlier, that verse in Deuteronomy, just it's not just like a time of day that you are picking to talk about these things about the Lord, but it's like a constant reminder on your tongue.
00:22:32.720 --> 00:22:35.200
Like when you wake up, you're just like talking about his goodness.
00:22:35.359 --> 00:22:46.240
When you're walking throughout your day, you're talking about his goodness, when you lay down at night, and it's just always a constant conversation that you're having in your house, just a conf conversation about how good the Lord is and what he's doing.
00:22:46.400 --> 00:22:52.000
And but it's not just like a set, like, oh, it's Sunday, we better talk about this, but it's just a constant flow of your home.
00:22:52.240 --> 00:22:52.640
Yeah, yeah.
00:22:52.720 --> 00:22:53.759
It should be a natural conversation.
00:22:53.839 --> 00:22:55.759
If it's not, it's just because you're not doing it enough.
00:22:56.079 --> 00:22:57.839
You know, the more you do it, it just becomes natural.
00:22:57.920 --> 00:23:00.400
So if it's not natural, then then make it natural.
00:23:00.640 --> 00:23:03.599
I would leave with this thought, verse 29.
00:23:03.759 --> 00:23:14.720
I hope it lets you or reminds you of this that everybody that is on this conversation and the people that are in this room will tell you that I'm weak and I'm not perfect.
00:23:14.880 --> 00:23:18.319
And there's multiple things in this room that we all struggle with.
00:23:18.480 --> 00:23:23.440
There's multiple things that we're not proud of, and there's multiple things that are secret that we hope people don't find out.
00:23:23.519 --> 00:23:38.960
You know, like there's multiple of those things that are in this room, but it reminds us that as just as a parent, that where I am weak, like his his who he is, his strength can be made perfect in our weakness.
00:23:39.359 --> 00:23:40.640
We don't have to be perfect.
00:23:41.039 --> 00:23:42.079
We have to be available.
00:23:42.240 --> 00:23:47.680
We have to be a listener, a doer of his word, not someone that's just saying, Well, here's the promises.
00:23:47.839 --> 00:23:58.559
I hope they come my way, but it's to be one that responds to his commands and does what he asks, not just to raise a good kid, but to raise a godly kid, not just to have a good family, but a godly family.
00:23:58.720 --> 00:24:03.200
And some of that is understanding it's his righteousness that we put on not our own.
00:24:03.359 --> 00:24:04.240
It's not our own.
00:24:04.400 --> 00:24:09.440
And so, because of that, his strength can be made perfect in our weakness.
00:00:01.600 --> 00:00:14.720
Welcome to Off Script, a conversation with no fakes, no filters, just real conversations about how faith and flesh meet in the everyday life, where we experience a God who made us on purpose for his purpose.
00:00:14.960 --> 00:00:16.239
This is Off Script.
00:00:16.399 --> 00:00:17.600
Let's talk.
00:00:21.120 --> 00:00:23.280
Hey, welcome if you're a parent joining in with us.
00:00:23.359 --> 00:00:26.160
Uh, this is a conversation for parents, from parents.
00:00:26.239 --> 00:00:32.479
Uh, and this is maybe you we got a room full of life group leaders that pour into students every single week.
00:00:32.560 --> 00:00:35.359
And so we just kind of want to hear from them and hear a little bit of their stories.
00:00:35.520 --> 00:00:38.640
We're gonna walk through Colossians 1, 15 through 29.
00:00:38.719 --> 00:00:46.960
We got Kimberly's in here, Jeremy's in here, and my wife Brittany is on here with us, and we got an empty chair for any of the you know 15 people that are in the room if they want to come jump up here as well.
00:00:47.039 --> 00:00:51.520
And so Kimberly's gonna start out, she's gonna read a little bit of the passage so you kind of know where we're gonna be.
00:00:51.600 --> 00:00:54.640
Don't just listen to us talk about it, but we want you to go read it as well.
00:00:54.719 --> 00:00:57.200
But Kimberly would jump in uh to the passage.
00:00:57.520 --> 00:00:58.640
All right, verse 15.
00:00:59.039 --> 00:01:23.280
00:01:23.519 --> 00:01:33.680
For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
00:01:33.920 --> 00:01:57.120
00:01:57.359 --> 00:02:18.560
00:02:18.879 --> 00:02:27.360
To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
00:02:27.599 --> 00:02:38.879
Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ, for this I told, struggling with all his energy, that he powerfully works within me.
00:02:39.199 --> 00:02:39.520
Amen.
00:02:39.680 --> 00:02:51.120
I would say that is a passage that if you've never read it before, uh, if you read it, and the slower you read it and the more you read it, every time you will find something new that you missed every single time with this passage.
00:02:51.199 --> 00:02:55.120
It goes back to I mean, answer this question.
00:02:55.439 --> 00:03:01.280
When your family thinks about the Lord, what's the first thing that comes to your mind?
00:03:01.599 --> 00:03:04.960
That is the most important thing about your family right there.
00:03:05.039 --> 00:03:06.000
What comes to your mind?
00:03:06.159 --> 00:03:12.960
And so when we open up this passage and it talks about that Christ is supreme, he's supreme in your life.
00:03:13.039 --> 00:03:23.840
Uh, we just got finished with a good conversation about as a parent, you know, how do how do we, what are the things that we struggle with to make to have this idea that the Lord is supreme over everything in my life?
00:03:24.080 --> 00:03:32.159
He is not just a fortune cookie that all of a sudden you just go to and you just read in Proverbs or you read something in Psalms, like, oh well, this is a good advice right here.
00:03:32.319 --> 00:03:39.439
He is supreme over every aspect of your life, he over everything, and how that funnels down to your kids.
00:03:39.520 --> 00:03:51.919
I and so maybe this could open up the conversation of how do we allow and how do we, you know, get into a kid's mind or a teenager's mind that the Lord is supreme.
00:03:52.400 --> 00:03:53.120
He is supreme.
00:03:53.199 --> 00:04:02.400
And I that's probably first of all how we act first, but more importantly, like I mean, uh you see anxiousness uh skyrocket with teenagers now.
00:04:02.719 --> 00:04:17.759
You see this anxiety that it's a constant flow of I mean, think about it's it's I mean, even in our student ministry, uh the majority of kids are on some kind of an anxiety medicine.
00:04:18.399 --> 00:04:20.879
You know, and twenty years ago that wasn't the case.
00:04:21.279 --> 00:04:26.079
And so how how do you put instill into a generation like that that the Lord is supreme?
00:04:26.480 --> 00:04:30.399
You know, it all things come down to him and what he allows to happen.
00:04:31.519 --> 00:04:33.600
I think some of that just begins with us.
00:04:33.759 --> 00:04:35.759
Like we have to model that for our kids.
00:04:35.920 --> 00:04:47.040
And so I think when we're walking through a situation that might seem like it should, you know, stress us out or cause us to have anxiety, they're looking to us just to kind of see how, you know, how did mom and dad, how do we handle this?
00:04:47.279 --> 00:04:56.959
And I think we even talk about this with our, you know, my seventh grade girls life group, but you know, especially as a female, like we are just we're so emotional and our emotions are up and down and everywhere.
00:04:57.040 --> 00:05:06.240
And just a reminder that like how we feel, like that's not always what truth is, and that the only thing that's true is what God's word says.
00:05:06.480 --> 00:05:13.839
And so I just have to have guardrails on myself of like as a parent, of you know, what does God's word say?
00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:20.079
And always go back to Philippians 4.8 when it talks about, you know, whatever is true, whatever is pure, whatever is kind.
00:05:20.160 --> 00:05:25.680
And I and I really just have to say each of those things and and what I'm thinking, is that this?
00:05:25.759 --> 00:05:27.279
Like, and what I'm thinking, is it true?
00:05:27.439 --> 00:05:28.079
Is it noble?
00:05:28.160 --> 00:05:28.720
Is it pure?
00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:29.439
Is it lovely?
00:05:29.519 --> 00:05:30.480
Is it commendable?
00:05:30.639 --> 00:05:37.600
And I just have to think like if if it's not, and if it if my thoughts aren't lining up to what God's word says, then that's not what truth is.
00:05:37.839 --> 00:05:44.480
And yeah, I would I wonder if if okay, well then in the passage it says, in in him all things hold together.
00:05:44.720 --> 00:05:48.399
You know, Kimberly, why how it in him all things hold together?
00:05:48.560 --> 00:05:51.839
How how does that instill into a a 14-year-old?
00:05:52.399 --> 00:06:06.399
Well, when I was thinking about this verse in particular, I had been thinking about it for several days, just about that that Christ in him, he was before creation, he was the agent of creation, and now he sustains and holds everything together.
00:06:06.480 --> 00:06:08.800
And so I had focused a lot of my attention on that.
00:06:09.279 --> 00:06:19.120
But this morning, just in talking with the Lord, I kind of did the flip on that, and it's like it's not Kimberly that holds all things together.
00:06:19.360 --> 00:06:19.759
Yeah.
00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:24.720
And so to me, that's very freeing because with so many things going on, we've had a very busy season.
00:06:25.040 --> 00:06:30.639
Wait, when you okay, when you say that, do you is that like a a weekly thing that you have to do, or is that something like just seasonal?
00:06:30.720 --> 00:06:34.800
Like, hey, you know, in this season I need to know this, or is this like a is that like a daily grind for you?
00:06:34.879 --> 00:06:49.040
I mean, it's probably different for everybody, but well, I mean, this is something that daily that you would need to focus on because I think as parents, I know especially I, you know, we have I have issues with control and I want to control things and it has been a daily exercise.
00:06:49.199 --> 00:07:02.000
Our kids range range in age from 22 to 16, and so as they're getting older and leaving the house, it's daily learning that it's not up to me to hold my family together, that it's him.
00:07:02.319 --> 00:07:09.920
And so for me, I having to let go of that and having to let go of the control of all the of the small things and trust him in that.
00:07:10.160 --> 00:07:16.160
And I was reminded this week of a verse because to me that helps me rest because I think as parents, we get burned out.
00:07:16.240 --> 00:07:20.000
Yeah, we get exhausted, and I think a lot of people Brittany gets burned out.
00:07:20.079 --> 00:07:22.079
I don't, I feel like I'm at plenty of energy all the time.
00:07:22.240 --> 00:07:22.399
Yeah.
00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:29.759
So I mean, you can really you just get tired, and I get tired, and sometimes I talk to people about taking to the bed, like I'm just gonna take to the bed on this.
00:07:29.839 --> 00:07:31.519
And I have done that once in the past month.
00:07:31.680 --> 00:07:33.199
I just actually took to the bed.
00:07:33.439 --> 00:07:43.600
Um, but if we if we let Christ hold that burden for us, it reminds me of Matthew 11, 28, come to me who all who are weary and heavy laden, and I'm gonna give you rest.
00:07:43.839 --> 00:07:48.399
Yeah, he he said the Lord says he is he is he is the head of the body, you know.
00:07:48.959 --> 00:07:55.839
And it Jeremy, if you if we're if we're going to he's the head of the body, okay, and we're applying that to what Kimberly just talked about.
00:07:55.920 --> 00:08:01.839
Like when you're you're trying to figure out the order and you know, like it doesn't rely, everything's not relying on me.
00:08:01.920 --> 00:08:04.240
You know, like the Lord isn't like where does that apply to somebody?
00:08:04.319 --> 00:08:05.199
That's verse 18.
00:08:05.439 --> 00:08:10.319
Yeah, so what really stuck out in verse 18 for me where it says, you know, he's the head of the body of the church, okay?
00:08:10.399 --> 00:08:22.560
And a lot of times as a parent, I know I've struggled with you feel like an immense pressure, like everything's on you to, you know, make sure your kids are, you know, hey, look, are they reading their Bible enough?
00:08:22.720 --> 00:08:33.120
Are they, you know, it's like it is our responsibility to start that, like Jeff said earlier, you know, it's our responsibility to kind of like plant that, so that, you know, till the garden or whatever.
00:08:33.279 --> 00:08:39.039
So but what it what stood out to me in this is that he's the head of the church, right?
00:08:39.360 --> 00:08:47.360
So that, you know, I feel like it's important as parents that we're not, you know, we've got to realize we're not raising our kids alone.
00:08:47.440 --> 00:08:54.799
You know, that's what I like so much about the baby dedication, you know, stuff that we do here, because you're saying, hey, look, I need your help.
00:08:54.879 --> 00:08:56.080
I need you to come along beside me.
00:08:56.159 --> 00:09:02.399
You know, it's good to have friends and mentors, youth ministers, children's ministers, and all that to come along beside you.
00:09:02.480 --> 00:09:04.080
So you feel like the pressure isn't all on you.
00:09:04.320 --> 00:09:12.639
Well, you got those milestones that you walk through, like, okay, when a kid goes from elementary school to middle school, that's a milestone for them.
00:09:12.799 --> 00:09:15.919
But for you as the parent, it's also a milestone for you.
00:09:16.080 --> 00:09:16.480
Right, right.
00:09:16.639 --> 00:09:24.799
When your kids learning how to drive or going to drive, like it's a milestone, but hey, when they pull out of that driveway, tell me it ain't a milestone for you.
00:09:24.879 --> 00:09:35.759
You know, like I mean, it's one of those two where I mean, there's small milestones you get, like when a kid can buckle their own self up, you know, when they can, I don't know, when they can pick the spoon up and feed themselves.
00:09:35.840 --> 00:09:36.639
That's huge, you know.
00:09:36.720 --> 00:09:40.960
Like when they can go potty on their own, you know, like when they can do their own laundry.
00:09:41.200 --> 00:09:42.399
When they can wipe their own tail.
00:09:42.559 --> 00:09:43.200
You know what I'm saying?
00:09:43.279 --> 00:09:50.960
Like that, all these things are these are all great milestones that you you need to walk around people that have walked through that before.
00:09:51.120 --> 00:09:54.399
You can't just think, well, you know, I don't I don't know how to do this.
00:09:54.480 --> 00:09:56.960
Well, can they what time should curfew be?
00:09:57.200 --> 00:09:57.360
Right.
00:09:57.679 --> 00:10:00.559
It truly does take a village because you know, we're all doing this for the first time.
00:10:00.639 --> 00:10:06.240
And I it took me a long time to realize when I actually when I had kids that my parents had no idea what they were doing.
00:10:06.320 --> 00:10:08.320
They were just doing the best they could, you know what I mean?
00:10:08.559 --> 00:10:10.960
So I kind of feel like we're in the same situation.
00:10:11.039 --> 00:10:13.519
We're uh they're looking at me for answers and I don't have them.
00:10:13.600 --> 00:10:14.639
You know what I mean?
00:10:14.960 --> 00:10:23.120
But what I try to do is, you know, Deuteronomy 6, 6 and 7 says where parents are called to teach about God, you know, as you're going through day-to-day life.
00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:26.320
When you get up in the morning, when you go to bed at night, as you're walking along through the day.
00:10:26.559 --> 00:10:32.960
And, you know, the we do that faithfully, and we just kind of lean on God, count on him to do the heart-changing work.
00:10:33.039 --> 00:10:54.399
You know, we can I 19 through 23 in this passage that Kimberly read is uh so I think some people would have the thought of maybe generational sin would come up in this, or maybe my family's apart from the Lord.
00:10:54.720 --> 00:11:05.840
You know, like we we have the Lord is not supreme in our life, like a sport is supreme, you know, or money is supreme, or our house is supreme, or our status is supreme.
00:11:06.000 --> 00:11:10.240
And you've really said, you know, that's really not got us anywhere except for anxiety.
00:11:10.559 --> 00:11:20.159
You know, the fact that I tried to make this, you know, my job supreme in our family has caught a lot of anxiety between my wife and I.
00:11:20.399 --> 00:11:34.320
Okay, well, if that's how you're gonna feel, that's that's gonna carry down to your kids, you know, like, but then you might have some groups or some families that come and say, Hey, my whole family, all the way to my grandparents, have been a just a failure.
00:11:34.480 --> 00:11:36.159
Like marriages are apart.
00:11:36.320 --> 00:11:40.559
Everybody's striving for something, everybody's falling apart, everybody struggles with this sin.
00:11:40.720 --> 00:11:43.759
This is uh this is a sin that cannot be reconciled.
00:11:43.840 --> 00:11:48.960
You know, this is just my future of family that struggles with fill in the blank.
00:11:49.120 --> 00:11:49.679
You know, babe.
00:11:49.759 --> 00:11:53.759
So what do you for 19 through 23, where where do where do you where do you give guidance?
00:11:54.000 --> 00:12:04.960
Well, I think just important for us, for our kids to know that we're not perfect and that, I mean, we were it says, you know, we were all once alienated enemies in our own minds because of our behavior.
00:12:05.120 --> 00:12:08.399
And so apart from Christ, like we're we're just we're not perfect.
00:12:08.559 --> 00:12:11.840
Like it's his blood, it's the cross that redeems us.
00:12:12.080 --> 00:12:20.960
And I think it's just important for our kids to know that and just for sometimes we need to be the ones to apologize and to say, like, hey, I don't, I don't have it all together.
00:12:21.120 --> 00:12:24.559
Like, we're not perfect parents and in preparing for this.
00:12:24.720 --> 00:12:31.039
A couple of nights ago at dinner, I was asking our kids, just knowing I was gonna get like the nicest answer ever.
00:12:31.200 --> 00:12:41.120
And I was like, Hey, you know, y'all, Holland Fan Rack, can y'all remember a time where like I said that I was sorry, like I did something wrong, and I said I was sorry, and they all busted out laughing.
00:12:41.200 --> 00:12:43.360
They were like, No, mom, you were never wrong.
00:12:43.440 --> 00:12:44.960
Like you say you're never wrong.
00:12:45.120 --> 00:12:45.919
Like I had never been.
00:12:46.320 --> 00:12:50.320
I wish I would have recorded this conversation so bad when it was happening.
00:12:50.799 --> 00:12:52.240
I don't think, well, again, like at least.
00:12:52.720 --> 00:12:53.519
No, guys, there's a time.
00:12:53.759 --> 00:12:55.039
Think about it when I have been wrong.
00:12:55.200 --> 00:12:55.679
Think about it.
00:12:55.759 --> 00:12:56.639
Think real hard, guys.
00:12:56.720 --> 00:12:57.440
There's been a time.
00:12:57.600 --> 00:12:59.440
Everyone's like, no, there has not, mom.
00:12:59.679 --> 00:13:02.720
You've never been a there has been a time.
00:13:02.879 --> 00:13:05.840
You you don't understand there has been a time.
00:13:06.960 --> 00:13:11.440
And then she was looking at me, and I just thought, you didn't ask me.
00:13:13.759 --> 00:13:14.639
So I guess I need a word.
00:13:14.960 --> 00:13:18.000
Then I said, Oh, has there been a time that dad has said he was sorry?
00:13:18.559 --> 00:13:20.240
Everybody's like, Yeah, all the time, Dad.
00:13:23.519 --> 00:13:25.519
Anyway, I don't even know where that was just funny.
00:13:26.000 --> 00:13:30.639
You know, we but we all uh parenting-wise, we're all we're all different.
00:13:31.120 --> 00:13:35.279
Uh even uh Brittany and I, we we are we are different parents.
00:13:35.519 --> 00:13:38.240
I mean, we're we're just wired differently as well.
00:13:38.399 --> 00:13:40.879
It doesn't mean that a better parent or she's a better parent.
00:13:41.120 --> 00:13:43.840
I mean, take for instance today, we just got out of a service.
00:13:44.080 --> 00:13:53.840
It's not in part of my notes, I'm just thinking about this, but it wouldn't the guy that was preaching, Draper, or one of our pastors was preaching, and he gave a visual of a whiteboard.
00:13:54.320 --> 00:13:57.039
And there was just two formulas on the whiteboard.
00:13:57.200 --> 00:14:01.679
And as soon as he put it up there, my wife just started writing down what he had put on there.
00:14:01.840 --> 00:14:04.559
The first thing that went through my mind is there's not white chalk on that board.
00:14:04.639 --> 00:14:06.879
Like there's yellow chalk, blue chalk, red chalk.
00:14:07.039 --> 00:14:08.320
There's not white chalk on that board.
00:14:08.399 --> 00:14:09.519
That's not a real picture.
00:14:09.679 --> 00:14:13.440
Like, there's it's a chalk board with white writing, and there's no white chalk.
00:14:13.600 --> 00:14:15.279
You know, like that's the first thing that went through my mind.
00:14:15.600 --> 00:14:15.679
Right.
00:14:15.919 --> 00:14:19.600
And Brittany's over there writing, Life without the Lord equals the wrong answer.
00:14:19.759 --> 00:14:24.559
You know, like she's writing down the book what you're supposed to write, and I'm thinking, well, get some white chalk on there, man.
00:14:24.639 --> 00:14:25.120
Come on.
00:14:25.279 --> 00:14:33.600
Like, dude, you can't write that without, you know, like, and we're just it that's that's just a small scenario, a step of like, we're we're different, we're gonna see things different.
00:14:33.759 --> 00:14:35.759
Doesn't mean she's better or I'm better.
00:14:35.919 --> 00:14:41.120
And I think that kind of goes to a little bit of a conversation we had a little bit earlier.
00:14:41.200 --> 00:14:50.320
I think Kimberly, you mentioned it, uh when I'm not ever going to look at my kid and say, hey man, we're just not gonna tell your mom.
00:14:50.639 --> 00:14:54.799
Okay, or hey, we're not gonna tell your mom, or she's not gonna say, hey, we're not gonna tell your dad.
00:14:55.039 --> 00:14:59.600
And this idea that you can, you know, you you can live a secret life.
00:14:59.759 --> 00:15:03.039
We can live this secret life because I'm gonna tell my wife everything.
00:15:03.200 --> 00:15:04.240
I'm gonna tell her everything.
00:15:04.399 --> 00:15:12.000
I'm I mean, I'll find the right time, but I'll I'm gonna tell her everything because our authority is my authority, is not her and her authority is not me.
00:15:12.080 --> 00:15:13.039
It's the Lord.
00:15:13.279 --> 00:15:14.159
That's what it is.
00:15:14.320 --> 00:15:19.279
And so because he reigns supreme, it's not what I want to do, it's what the Lord has commanded us to do.
00:15:19.440 --> 00:15:25.519
It's not just what I feel like this is gonna be the right thing, it's what I what what what I know the Lord has commanded us to do.
00:15:25.679 --> 00:15:32.879
And and I don't know if you guys want to jump into a little bit of that conversation of you're different, but you both have the same authority.
00:15:33.200 --> 00:15:35.440
You know, you might discipline differently.
00:15:35.759 --> 00:15:38.639
It you're the tone of your voice might be different, you know.
00:15:38.720 --> 00:15:42.159
It doesn't mean somebody cares less or somebody cares more.
00:15:43.120 --> 00:15:44.799
I'm gonna say this, I'll I'll be quiet.
00:15:45.600 --> 00:15:51.600
This was a big conversation when Brittany and I first had Finn, our oldest, who's 13 now.
00:15:52.240 --> 00:15:53.919
She carried him for nine months.
00:15:54.799 --> 00:15:57.120
You know, like they had a bond that I did not have.
00:15:57.440 --> 00:15:57.679
Okay.
00:15:58.480 --> 00:16:11.200
And when she had him, she was very protective of him, you know, like and not to a point that was unhealthy, but it would you could just tell there was a special connection there that I did not have yet, you know.
00:16:11.600 --> 00:16:16.399
And I had to remind her, I don't know, the first six months we had Finn.
00:16:16.960 --> 00:16:22.240
You know how he's he's my son, and I I love him and I want to protect him and I care for him just as much as you do.
00:16:22.480 --> 00:16:23.759
I'm just gonna be different.
00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:30.480
And that was a learning experience of like, I I do like I'm gonna do things with him that you think that's not safe.
00:16:30.720 --> 00:16:31.519
I I care about him.
00:16:31.679 --> 00:16:33.759
I'm gonna protect him, I'm gonna be around him.
00:16:33.919 --> 00:16:35.279
We're very different.
00:16:35.840 --> 00:16:45.759
And you know, where you thought, oh, we're gonna parent just alike and we're gonna be all that like we we do have there's some standards that we don't cross, but there are some things that we are different on.
00:16:46.080 --> 00:16:50.799
And they're not unhealthy, but it was just a reminder of like, I I love them too.
00:16:51.200 --> 00:16:59.440
And that that took a season of learning, you know, I care for them too, you know, and I I want to be with them and I want to walk with them.
00:16:59.600 --> 00:17:02.159
And, you know, there'd probably be a healthy balance there.
00:17:02.480 --> 00:17:13.039
Well, I've learned over the years, Tracy and I, we definitely parent differently, but I have learned from his wisdom, I'm the person who I want things to be addressed yesterday.
00:17:13.119 --> 00:17:15.839
Like if there's a problem, I want it handled immediately.
00:17:15.920 --> 00:17:17.359
And I'm a lot of words.
00:17:17.519 --> 00:17:20.880
So when I talk to when I talk to my kids, there's lots of words.
00:17:20.960 --> 00:17:25.359
And then at some point I realize, Kimberly, you've said that three times now and they're glazing over.
00:17:25.519 --> 00:17:27.759
And so that's how I tend to be.
00:17:27.839 --> 00:17:31.279
But over the years, I have tried to learn from Tracy's example.
00:17:31.440 --> 00:17:41.279
And so it might seem that I care more or that things are more important to me because I have more to say about it, or maybe I'm louder about it, or I want to handle it right now.
00:17:41.440 --> 00:17:46.400
But there's wisdom with what Tracy does is he measures his words carefully.
00:17:46.559 --> 00:17:48.079
And I've learned that over the years.
00:17:48.240 --> 00:18:00.480
And he said something to me a few years ago, and I've really tried to take that to heart because he said, when I talk, when he talks to our daughter, he says, I measure my words with her because I know that she values what I say and puts importance on it.
00:18:00.640 --> 00:18:03.200
And so we're not going to carelessly speak to our children.
00:18:03.359 --> 00:18:12.240
And so that really helps me guard myself because I say too much and I talk too much and I give my opinion and I need to step back from that a little bit.
00:18:12.400 --> 00:18:14.720
And so, you know, we care in different ways.
00:18:14.880 --> 00:18:17.759
I more step in immediately, he more observes.
00:18:18.400 --> 00:18:22.000
And then in his time when he has the opportunity, he addresses things with them.
00:18:22.160 --> 00:18:26.720
So he addresses usually when I address things with the children, everybody knows that I have.
00:18:26.880 --> 00:18:32.400
But, you know, Tracy, he takes them out, like they go eat and and has and he has those difficult conversations with them.
00:18:32.559 --> 00:18:39.359
So I think that it it's a good, it's a blend of both because, like you said, we both love our kids, um, but we approach it in different ways.
00:18:39.519 --> 00:18:41.440
I'm more, let's talk things through.
00:18:41.599 --> 00:18:43.119
I mean, we're gonna pray over it.
00:18:43.279 --> 00:18:46.160
We're gonna, you know, I'm probably gonna give you a Bible verse about it.
00:18:46.400 --> 00:18:49.039
And it's more of an immediate thing when I see a problem.
00:18:49.200 --> 00:18:58.720
But over the years I've come to appreciate very much Tracy's role in that he takes his time, he measures his word, he prays before he speaks, and that's really important.
00:18:59.119 --> 00:19:06.880
So, okay, maybe Jeremy, Brittany, maybe you guys jump into this part of okay, so then you're not just trying to raise just a good kid.
00:19:07.039 --> 00:19:12.799
You know, I mean, they one kid might go say, Well, I'm I I need some shoes, I'm gonna go talk to dad.
00:19:12.960 --> 00:19:13.440
You know what I'm saying?
00:19:13.519 --> 00:19:18.799
Like, or I, you know, like I got a girl issue, you know, I'm I'm talking to mom, I'm not talking to dad.
00:19:18.880 --> 00:19:20.000
You know, he's gonna think it's a joke.
00:19:20.079 --> 00:19:27.200
You know, like what, you know, like you you people might choose to go talk to somebody else than the other, or you might discipline differently.
00:19:27.680 --> 00:19:33.920
These are all okay, but when it comes to like this thought of, well, I'm I'm just trying to raise a good kid.
00:19:34.079 --> 00:19:36.400
You know, I just want them to win the character award.
00:19:36.559 --> 00:19:39.119
I just you know, I'm I just want to raise a good kid.
00:19:39.839 --> 00:19:43.680
Is that is that showing the Lord's supremacy in your life?
00:19:43.839 --> 00:19:46.960
Is man, I just want to raise a kid that's got good character, you know?
00:19:47.279 --> 00:19:48.960
I just want to raise somebody good.
00:19:51.759 --> 00:19:53.599
Well, I you know, I don't think so.
00:19:53.839 --> 00:20:06.720
I think that our our job is to raise, you know, Ray, hey, listen, raising a spectacular student or a uh a great talented athlete, that's awesome, but that shouldn't be the end goal.
00:20:06.880 --> 00:20:14.960
Our end goal is to raise people that they they put Christ at the center of everything, and that's what their focus is on.
00:20:15.200 --> 00:20:22.000
Because all the things we just had this conversation a couple of weeks ago at our house that listen, we've been blessed, okay?
00:20:22.079 --> 00:20:23.519
I've I've been blessed with a good job.
00:20:23.599 --> 00:20:25.839
I can provide for my family and everything.
00:20:26.079 --> 00:20:27.920
But all that can be taken away.
00:20:28.160 --> 00:20:29.839
Like the world could take all that away.
00:20:29.920 --> 00:20:35.680
We could lose the house, we could lose everything, but what can't be taken away is my name's written in the Lamb's book of life, right?
00:20:35.839 --> 00:20:39.119
So my salvation is eternal, and that's what we need to focus on.
00:20:39.200 --> 00:20:44.319
Not the things like, yeah, if you're a great athlete, you might, you know, go to the NFL and make a bunch of money.
00:20:44.480 --> 00:20:48.480
But at the end of the day, that's not, you know, hey, that all that's temporary.
00:20:48.640 --> 00:20:49.519
All of it's temporary.
00:20:49.599 --> 00:20:54.559
So we need to be trying to not just good kids, because I want my kids to be good, I want them to do well in school.
00:20:54.720 --> 00:20:54.880
Yeah.
00:20:55.200 --> 00:20:58.400
But more importantly, I want them to see Christ in the center of everything.
00:20:58.640 --> 00:20:59.119
Yeah, okay.
00:20:59.279 --> 00:21:04.880
It's almost like the thought of you your kid can hit a curveball because you taught him that, but he doesn't know how to hit a curveball in life.
00:21:05.039 --> 00:21:05.759
Doesn't it?
00:21:05.839 --> 00:21:06.000
Yeah.
00:21:06.160 --> 00:21:13.359
Like he can tell you the lineup for this year's Alabama football team, but they can't tell you five scriptures.
00:21:13.519 --> 00:21:13.680
Right.
00:21:13.839 --> 00:21:16.000
You know, like you, you, you are pouring into them.
00:21:16.079 --> 00:21:17.599
You are pouring great things.
00:21:17.680 --> 00:21:19.279
I mean, it's great to know who all's playing.
00:21:19.599 --> 00:21:20.400
Yeah, there's nothing wrong with it.
00:21:20.559 --> 00:21:21.680
There's nothing wrong with those things.
00:21:21.839 --> 00:21:28.240
But if that if your kid doesn't know how to pick up the sword and use it, I would say that's your training.
00:21:28.319 --> 00:21:29.440
You you you've got to train it.
00:21:29.519 --> 00:21:32.480
You can't be like, well, I'm just gonna drop them off a student ministry, hope they figure this out.
00:21:32.559 --> 00:21:32.799
Right.
00:21:32.880 --> 00:21:42.240
Like you we we gotta be the ones to say, hey, this is how I use this book, and this is what I do, and this is and you know, obviously the the older they get, it looks a little different, you know.
00:21:42.480 --> 00:21:49.839
But what okay, what's some realistic ways of how someone can say, well, I want to put this into practice now?
00:21:50.079 --> 00:21:51.599
Like how how does that look?
00:21:53.119 --> 00:21:54.079
What you think, man?
00:21:55.039 --> 00:22:07.039
Well, I think kind of what we talked about earlier, just like frequent forgiveness, like asking clearly I need to work on that, but just like letting them know that we're not perfect and that's what do you want me to say when you need to work on it?
00:22:07.279 --> 00:22:10.079
This isn't one of those times that a code word, you know.
00:22:13.519 --> 00:22:19.200
And just asking your kids questions like weekly, like where did you see Jesus work in your life this week?
00:22:19.599 --> 00:22:20.880
Asking them questions like that.
00:22:20.960 --> 00:22:32.640
And I like what Jeremy said earlier, that verse in Deuteronomy, just it's not just like a time of day that you are picking to talk about these things about the Lord, but it's like a constant reminder on your tongue.
00:22:32.720 --> 00:22:35.200
Like when you wake up, you're just like talking about his goodness.
00:22:35.359 --> 00:22:46.240
When you're walking throughout your day, you're talking about his goodness, when you lay down at night, and it's just always a constant conversation that you're having in your house, just a conf conversation about how good the Lord is and what he's doing.
00:22:46.400 --> 00:22:52.000
And but it's not just like a set, like, oh, it's Sunday, we better talk about this, but it's just a constant flow of your home.
00:22:52.240 --> 00:22:52.640
Yeah, yeah.
00:22:52.720 --> 00:22:53.759
It should be a natural conversation.
00:22:53.839 --> 00:22:55.759
If it's not, it's just because you're not doing it enough.
00:22:56.079 --> 00:22:57.839
You know, the more you do it, it just becomes natural.
00:22:57.920 --> 00:23:00.400
So if it's not natural, then then make it natural.
00:23:00.640 --> 00:23:03.599
I would leave with this thought, verse 29.
00:23:03.759 --> 00:23:14.720
I hope it lets you or reminds you of this that everybody that is on this conversation and the people that are in this room will tell you that I'm weak and I'm not perfect.
00:23:14.880 --> 00:23:18.319
And there's multiple things in this room that we all struggle with.
00:23:18.480 --> 00:23:23.440
There's multiple things that we're not proud of, and there's multiple things that are secret that we hope people don't find out.
00:23:23.519 --> 00:23:38.960
You know, like there's multiple of those things that are in this room, but it reminds us that as just as a parent, that where I am weak, like his his who he is, his strength can be made perfect in our weakness.
00:23:39.359 --> 00:23:40.640
We don't have to be perfect.
00:23:41.039 --> 00:23:42.079
We have to be available.
00:23:42.240 --> 00:23:47.680
We have to be a listener, a doer of his word, not someone that's just saying, Well, here's the promises.
00:23:47.839 --> 00:23:58.559
I hope they come my way, but it's to be one that responds to his commands and does what he asks, not just to raise a good kid, but to raise a godly kid, not just to have a good family, but a godly family.
00:23:58.720 --> 00:24:03.200
And some of that is understanding it's his righteousness that we put on not our own.
00:24:03.359 --> 00:24:04.240
It's not our own.
00:24:04.400 --> 00:24:09.440
And so, because of that, his strength can be made perfect in our weakness.
