00:00:02.319 --> 00:00:06.000
We're out this week on the modified minute.
00:00:06.480 --> 00:00:15.039
The act of the physical therapy itself, as well as um the chiropractor and just regular doctor's appointments.
00:00:15.839 --> 00:00:21.280
The actual appointments themselves, not a thing about them felt motivating.
00:00:21.519 --> 00:00:34.560
Um and it's especially difficult when they're measuring, okay, we're gonna see how far you could bend this week, and you know, can you can you move just a little bit more?
00:00:34.640 --> 00:00:38.799
And you know, his stuff didn't take a lot of time, you know, compared to my stuff.
00:00:38.960 --> 00:00:50.320
But as he started getting more serious, then you know, I I found myself like really torn because I didn't want to miss something on his car or cart or whatever he was racing because I was working on my car.
00:00:50.640 --> 00:00:54.240
Um, and so I had a spotter at the time, Chuck Madigan.
00:00:54.479 --> 00:01:07.920
Um, and we were talking one day, and I was telling him about one of JP's races, and I was telling him about um it was a wild thing race that JP almost won, and I was I was so excited talking about this race and what a job he did.
00:01:08.079 --> 00:01:20.719
And Chuck looked at me, no mind you was my spotter, and he said, you know, I wish you had that much excitement when you talk about your own racing as as you you do when you talk about JP's racing.
00:01:20.879 --> 00:01:23.120
Right away, I said, This is where I want to be.
00:01:23.280 --> 00:01:24.799
This is what I want to do.
00:01:25.040 --> 00:01:29.519
And you know, we won all those races in '78, and I didn't get the phone call.
00:01:29.599 --> 00:01:32.879
I thought Richard Petty, oh, he was old, he's gonna retire.
00:01:33.120 --> 00:01:34.079
Nobody called.
00:01:34.480 --> 00:01:35.120
All that.
00:01:35.519 --> 00:01:38.799
Along with Hot Dog of the Week and Throttle Down.
00:01:38.959 --> 00:01:43.599
So tighten those belts because this week's modified minute is next.
00:01:53.200 --> 00:01:55.120
They're called the Mod Squad.
00:01:55.920 --> 00:01:57.120
Ground Pounders.
00:01:57.840 --> 00:02:02.239
The men that live by the grace of God and 600 horsepower.
00:02:02.480 --> 00:02:07.200
They are open-wheeled race cars, flung low to the ground and ready to rumble.
00:02:58.719 --> 00:03:01.599
100% quality since 1933.
00:03:04.879 --> 00:03:07.919
Build smarter, build better, by Mr.
00:03:08.080 --> 00:03:09.039
Ruder Fleming.
00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:16.719
Expert Fleming contractors, you can trust by SteinPro, exceeding your expectations.
00:03:17.120 --> 00:03:22.560
And by Ferguson Contractors, building excellence since 1925.
00:03:23.039 --> 00:03:24.240
Here's Jack.
00:03:24.879 --> 00:03:27.919
Welcome to another episode of the Modified Minute.
00:03:28.080 --> 00:03:34.000
Now, this week, we take a look at perseverance and how it can result in success.
00:03:34.319 --> 00:03:42.560
For Sammy Anderson, it was perseverance that drove her to rebound from a terrible highway accident that left her unable to walk.
00:03:43.120 --> 00:03:53.599
Through her very painful recovery, Sammy focused on returning to her SK Lite modified and continuing the Anderson family racing legacy.
00:03:54.080 --> 00:03:59.840
Fred Julio, perseverance was the key to his son's rise in the modified ranks.
00:04:00.080 --> 00:04:10.719
Late nights and hours looking for the edge that would make his son JP a winner, made this a family affair and a winning one that provides inspiration.
00:04:11.759 --> 00:04:18.879
In 1978, Jeff Podine won 55 NASCAR modified events.
00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:22.319
It's a record that still stands to this day.
00:04:22.639 --> 00:04:29.120
His dream was to race in the Daytona 500, but no one called after that historic performance.
00:04:29.360 --> 00:04:34.319
But Podine persevered and kept racing and winning modified races.
00:04:34.560 --> 00:04:42.720
He eventually did realize his dream and did win the Daytona 500 and became a superstar on NASCAR's cup level.
00:04:43.279 --> 00:04:48.639
All three are here on this episode, and all three have compelling stories to tell.
00:04:48.879 --> 00:04:53.360
But before we get to them, we need to get you up to speed.
00:04:55.680 --> 00:04:59.279
Time to get you up to speed in the modified world.
00:05:00.079 --> 00:05:04.160
Up to speed is brought to you by Mid-State Site Development.
00:05:04.720 --> 00:05:09.439
Mid-State, safe time, knowledge and innovation.
00:05:10.560 --> 00:05:14.240
Weekend action kicked off with the time for a double crowd at Dapper.
00:05:14.720 --> 00:05:19.040
A heavy rain delayed the program to force a change in the event world.
00:05:19.279 --> 00:05:25.600
So first up, the SK5 deck, one of the richest SK modified races to be.
00:05:26.879 --> 00:05:29.120
Here they come on turn number four.
00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:32.560
They fire the engines wheel up to speed here at Stafford.
00:05:32.879 --> 00:05:34.560
File him on turn number one.
00:05:35.040 --> 00:05:39.439
Side by side and wheel to wheel, it is the 10 of Reed in command.
00:05:39.680 --> 00:05:43.920
Reed has to lead Christopher in second, but he is not gonna waste any time going for the wheel.
00:05:44.079 --> 00:05:49.759
Green throws the block over, corrects, and goes head on into the wall on the first black of the three split.
00:05:50.319 --> 00:05:52.639
Our bullshitter crashes out of the race.
00:05:53.199 --> 00:05:56.079
On the turn three, we have a stack up in the middle of the pack.
00:05:58.480 --> 00:06:01.439
You got a guy that's only good at winning races by token tire.
00:06:01.600 --> 00:06:11.439
That clears himself, going down in a three, drives in the tide at 57, drives into my right front, knocks us into the weeds, we got sideways, and everybody else is stacked into there, and I got stuffed in his fence.
00:06:11.600 --> 00:06:16.160
Uh, you know, they call Tato and uh, you know, a nice guy, but he ain't nothing nice and not.
00:06:16.399 --> 00:06:19.519
I joke me to show my displeasure when I get my hands on him after the race.
00:06:19.680 --> 00:06:27.519
Anthony Bellows has a rocket, and he is not afraid of showing the powerhouse there, because he's running on rails, setting it second.
00:06:27.759 --> 00:06:33.040
Close pole in turn one, flamia and pearls make contact right for the polar and Christopher.
00:06:33.120 --> 00:06:34.959
Thankfully, nothing worse happened there.
00:06:35.040 --> 00:06:38.160
Christopher's able to get my both bullets, lambia on the outside.
00:06:38.319 --> 00:06:40.639
White flag is out, one lap to go.
00:06:40.879 --> 00:06:42.000
Mike Christopher Jr.
00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:44.480
leads the way, and he has been dominant with the start.
00:06:44.560 --> 00:06:52.560
A close ball with the first lap of play three, but then it has been smooth sailing at 82 car with two turns to go before another SK5K.
00:06:52.720 --> 00:06:59.360
Started on the front row, will lead all 100 laps in route to his second win in the Napa SK5K off of turn number four.
00:06:59.519 --> 00:07:00.800
Michael Christopher Jr.
00:07:00.959 --> 00:07:04.079
takes the checkered flag and the win here tonight.
00:07:04.319 --> 00:07:05.600
Man, we deserve this.
00:07:05.759 --> 00:07:10.480
Uh uh, we've been fast all year and just, you know, things just haven't gone our way.
00:07:10.639 --> 00:07:14.879
Last week we had the fastest car in practice, fastest car in the heat race, and and it gets rained out.
00:07:15.040 --> 00:07:22.879
And you know, we haven't run a full schedule this season, haven't won yet, so I just feel like things are just not really going our way, but it did tonight.
00:07:23.439 --> 00:07:29.680
With the checkered flag on the SK5K, the Stein Pro Triple Crown winner stood in the spotlight.
00:07:29.839 --> 00:07:35.120
And it's a third place triple crown 2026 champion for Keith Rocco.
00:07:35.360 --> 00:07:36.319
Keith, congratulations.
00:07:36.480 --> 00:07:39.120
Great runs, all three legs of this triple crown.
00:07:39.439 --> 00:07:41.199
Yeah, this was uh this was great, you know.
00:07:41.360 --> 00:07:45.439
Uh much rather be in victory lane, but uh doing the triple crown, I gotta thank SteinPro.
00:07:45.600 --> 00:07:47.839
They got one heck of a business and one heck of an operation.
00:07:48.079 --> 00:07:56.240
I appreciate them doing this, and uh, man, that's one heck of a trophy, but then it was time for the 20 lap SK Light made event.
00:07:56.480 --> 00:08:01.600
So the start of the 20 Lap SK Light feature event, we are underway, and it's R.
00:08:01.759 --> 00:08:04.639
Carey that gets the dump to go to turn one for the first time.
00:08:04.959 --> 00:08:11.360
To go, here comes Fritz Matthews to the inside of the sandwich for second Matthews trying to take advantage of that good track position to start.
00:08:11.519 --> 00:08:18.480
He pulls even with a full bar to bar that second spot behind him and Tim Handers inside of our carry, two by two from second on back.
00:08:18.720 --> 00:08:20.800
Meanwhile, back into the runner-up spot.
00:08:20.879 --> 00:08:24.079
Here comes Matthews, he'll put the pressure on Matt Brewer.
00:08:24.319 --> 00:08:28.000
They cost the strife, but it's still brewer, like it just down to one.
00:08:28.240 --> 00:08:35.440
Matthews had a really good three and four, got by to take second and then got under Brewer, and he's gonna complete the pass coming off of two.
00:08:35.759 --> 00:08:38.879
Matthews takes the lead with Brewer jumping him, going into three.
00:08:39.360 --> 00:08:46.240
But a heavy box settled in on lap 10, and the race was declared official, with Chris Matthews being the winner.
00:08:46.399 --> 00:08:48.480
Yeah, the car was great, uh, it just kept getting better.
00:08:48.799 --> 00:08:54.480
Unfortunately, we didn't get to finish the thing out, but uh uh we had a real quick start spot, which obviously that means everything here.
00:08:54.720 --> 00:08:56.720
Uh but it was just fun.
00:08:56.879 --> 00:09:03.519
Meanwhile at Riverhead, their modified racing program was interrupted while the great modified were qualified.
00:09:04.159 --> 00:09:06.320
Oh, there it's right on the crackers, right?
00:09:13.679 --> 00:09:22.559
Saturday night, it was Todd Owen scoring his first win of the team at the Waterfront Depot, which came after his horse battle with Anthony Planner.
00:09:22.960 --> 00:09:27.519
Jonathan Julio scored another podium finish in the third spot.
00:09:28.399 --> 00:09:39.200
Also, on Saturday, the Monaco modified tri trackers with back in action on Speedway for the first of the two appearances of the tour at the cement power.
00:09:39.679 --> 00:09:45.679
Ron Dilk brought the field to three, but it came down to the final five laps of the race.
00:09:45.919 --> 00:09:55.919
Jonathan McKennedy started deep in the field, but put on a late race charge and gone fast, deep and optic for the league with just two laps to go.
00:09:56.720 --> 00:10:03.600
Coptic held on for a second, and Ron Tilk ended the 125 lapper, finishing in third.
00:10:03.840 --> 00:10:08.159
We've got really fast cars everywhere, just honestly just some bad luck.
00:10:08.399 --> 00:10:11.519
I mean, Tom suddenly blew a transmission coming up the green.
00:10:12.240 --> 00:10:20.399
Um race to go there with the staff green, uh piece of debris and the yellow one's got all the funny spectrum to both meet up.
00:10:29.279 --> 00:10:31.200
So yeah, it's good to get the monkey back up.
00:10:31.840 --> 00:10:36.000
Uh today was just uh a real up and down day, but we had a strategy, we stuck with it.
00:10:36.159 --> 00:10:46.879
Um with it about sixty to go and it was still back around eighteenth or twentieth, and um we drove through the field and chased down the top three cars with about five to go and was able to get by himself.
00:10:47.440 --> 00:10:49.279
So now you are true.
00:10:51.919 --> 00:11:10.080
If you recall back on episode 17 when Dan Avery was on our crew call segment, he advocated for NASCAR or indie car drivers to take a turn behind the wheel of a modified somebody like from the cup series or whatever, maybe you know, come in and give it a shot and just have a little fun with it.
00:11:10.159 --> 00:11:12.720
Or he even uh even the indie car series, right?
00:11:13.200 --> 00:11:14.159
Well, let me interrupt you.
00:11:14.399 --> 00:11:31.679
Let me interrupt because uh I have been working on a deal with my good friend Tony Canon, the 2013 Indy 500 champion, and it's now that he's so deeply immersed as the team principal at McLaren, his available days are quite limited.
00:11:31.919 --> 00:11:38.080
But uh he's gonna come to Stafford over the course of the next two years, and he's going to drive an SK modified.
00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:44.240
Well, we have an update on that story.
00:11:47.519 --> 00:11:50.639
Uh message for everyone at Stafford Speedway.
00:11:51.039 --> 00:11:54.159
I'll try to make the race at some point.
00:11:54.639 --> 00:12:07.679
Uh Jack and his family uh organized the car and everything, but obviously my duties with uh Aaron McLaren uh, you know, this is the busiest time of the year for five races in a row, so uh hopefully I'll make it.
00:12:07.840 --> 00:12:10.240
One day, I promise, I'll make it.
00:12:10.639 --> 00:12:11.440
Thank you guys.
00:12:11.679 --> 00:12:12.480
Stay tuned.
00:12:13.120 --> 00:12:14.559
So, folks, stay tuned.
00:12:14.799 --> 00:12:17.919
You will see TK in an SK.
00:12:18.960 --> 00:12:25.120
With all the action this past weekend, there's been some changes to the track series standings, so let's take a look at them.
00:12:40.720 --> 00:12:45.279
With Ronnie Williams falling to second and Ron Silk in third.
00:12:45.519 --> 00:12:50.480
Next up for the series is September 6th at the Waterford Speedbowl.
00:12:50.639 --> 00:13:00.480
The Wheel of Modified Tours back in action at the New Hampshire Speedway, and Patrick Emmerlin hope to maintain his lead over Austin Bears and Steven Tobson.
00:13:00.960 --> 00:13:07.039
For the smart modified tours, Danny Bone, Ryan Newman, and Gabe Crumb occupy the top spots.
00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:10.080
Thompson Speedway standing.
00:13:10.320 --> 00:13:16.159
Show Kevin Davis atop the SK Lights Division, with Austin Goff in second and R.J.
00:13:16.320 --> 00:13:18.000
Marcot in third.
00:13:18.320 --> 00:13:25.440
Keith Rocco sits atop the track Sinoko SK Modified Standing, followed by Todd Owen and Danny Cate.
00:13:25.919 --> 00:13:34.320
At the Stafford Speedway, their SK Light standings show Nick Ann Glaze on top, while Tyler Barry is just 26 points bigger.
00:13:35.120 --> 00:13:45.039
In the SK Modified, it shows Keith Rocco with a sizable lead over defending track champion Jonathan Julio with Todd Owen sitting in third.
00:13:45.360 --> 00:13:53.840
With the rain out at Riverhead Raceway, their great modified standings remain unchanged with Michael Byrne enjoying a seven-point lead.
00:13:54.000 --> 00:13:57.200
In the tour type standings, it's John Beatty Jr.
00:13:57.440 --> 00:14:00.960
sitting atop the standings with a ten-point lead.
00:14:01.279 --> 00:14:11.200
Waterford's SK lights were idle last weekend, so Robert Fox in the third hold on to the top spot, followed by Kevin Cormier and Kevin Davis.
00:14:11.519 --> 00:14:19.679
And finally, the Tracks SK standings show Anthony Flanner holding a nine-point lead over this past weekend's winner, Todd Owen.
00:14:19.840 --> 00:14:22.399
Nicholas Hubble is in third.
00:14:23.200 --> 00:14:27.759
Most people think that the 1970s was the golden age of modified racing.
00:14:28.000 --> 00:14:36.159
The cars were bound by limited rules that allowed teams to tinker and create unique and very fast designs.
00:14:36.639 --> 00:14:48.399
Legends like Richie Evans, Bugsy Stevens, Ron Bouchard, Jerry Cook, Maynard Troyer, Ray Hendrix, Satch Worley, and Eddie Flemkey filled the fields of the Northeast short tracks.
00:14:49.120 --> 00:14:57.360
But the one driver that took them all on and set a record of 55 wins in just one year was Jeff Bodine.
00:14:57.759 --> 00:15:01.519
He's here with me now on this week's Racer Spotlight.
00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:14.240
Well, Jeff, it's been more than a minute.
00:15:14.399 --> 00:15:15.279
It's good to see you.
00:15:15.360 --> 00:15:16.480
You're looking good.
00:15:16.799 --> 00:15:17.360
Well, thanks.
00:15:17.759 --> 00:15:18.559
You're looking good too.
00:15:18.639 --> 00:15:23.519
It just seems like uh we were at Stafford Speedway just last uh Saturday night.
00:15:24.159 --> 00:15:30.000
You know, it's well documented and it's been it's been reported over and over and over again.
00:15:30.240 --> 00:15:38.320
Your incredible accomplishments at the upper levels and and specifically with Hendrix Motorsports and your your cup career.
00:15:38.480 --> 00:15:44.720
I want to go back and talk a lot about what got you there.
00:15:45.039 --> 00:15:51.360
Let me take you back to Shimung Speedrome that your family owned and built and operated.
00:15:51.759 --> 00:15:57.759
And as I understand it, your very first modified ride there, I didn't know this was in a coop.
00:15:58.480 --> 00:15:59.440
Yeah, yeah, it was.
00:16:07.279 --> 00:16:28.960
And uh actually I I was a friend of my uncle's and I became his great friend of the week of my car.
00:16:35.200 --> 00:16:40.399
And then uh he came the cane in the cane, uh local uh car owner.
00:16:41.600 --> 00:16:46.639
We drove a few races every year, and then the final year he was the team owner.
00:16:47.039 --> 00:17:07.119
And you had some terrific success, specifically in the race of champions, but it wasn't until you showed up with that Plymouth Valiant at what I called the epicenter of modified racing back then, and that was the Stafford Speedway, where everybody, every star convened, and you showed up as the new kid on the block.
00:17:07.279 --> 00:17:09.200
Tell me how you were greeted.
00:17:09.519 --> 00:17:10.559
Not very well.
00:17:11.519 --> 00:17:16.400
You know, that car was way ahead of its time, it had an open two rear axle way offset.
00:17:16.720 --> 00:17:28.640
The engine was down on the ground, had this small quartermaster clutch so you can lower down and all the four-wheel independent, uh I mean rollovers, power steering, you name it, it had it.
00:17:28.880 --> 00:17:34.319
What I learned uh I give God all the credit for all that I've done and learned all the good stuff.
00:17:34.480 --> 00:17:35.839
I take credit for bad.
00:17:36.160 --> 00:17:40.880
But he gave me this talent to design and build things to make them better.
00:17:41.200 --> 00:17:47.519
And uh we had rules, but you can go around the rules and uh find ways to make it better, and that's what we did.
00:17:47.599 --> 00:17:49.200
And that car is way ahead of his time.
00:17:49.599 --> 00:17:59.759
People uh we went there and they were booing booing and I think move loud enough to move power! The more you boo, the faster I go! They move.
00:18:00.720 --> 00:18:02.480
We had a lot of fun with the fans there.
00:18:02.960 --> 00:18:04.319
But then things changed.
00:18:04.640 --> 00:18:13.279
When uh entering into your life was uh Dick Armstrong, who owned new style jewelry, and his group of rowdy crew members.
00:18:13.519 --> 00:18:19.200
Tell me how you got the call to take over the drive in the number one, the big red machine.
00:18:19.680 --> 00:18:29.200
We're at uh North Carolina, met uh Metropolitan racetrack north of North of the Streetway, turn around.
00:18:29.920 --> 00:18:38.319
And my modified broke and I was talking with Ray Henrik, who was driving for Jake back then, and Ray was a great, great, great driver.
00:18:38.720 --> 00:18:41.279
And he said, hey, you know, you need to talk to Jake.
00:18:41.359 --> 00:18:45.920
He wants to run all these races, and I don't want to run all the races, I live down in Virginia.
00:18:46.160 --> 00:18:50.480
So I went over and he introduced me to Jake, and that's how the introduction started.
00:18:51.119 --> 00:18:53.759
And uh we formed a deal.
00:18:55.920 --> 00:19:21.039
I borrowed I this is true, I brought Jackie Fresher, Fresher back in those days, but a trailer, and from Shimon to uh Ellen has I told uh 24 or 5 trailer that my wife Kathy and my one son that Matthew lived in for a while, and that's how the relationship started with uh with Derek.
00:19:26.000 --> 00:19:34.880
Trailer lived in his backyard, and the rest is history is to say Well, it wasn't historic union.
00:19:34.960 --> 00:19:36.799
You won all kinds of races.
00:19:37.119 --> 00:19:46.720
But the one thing that I remember is that one year when you went on a tear over fifty races, you guys combined to win.
00:19:47.119 --> 00:19:48.880
How do you get on a roll like that?
00:19:50.079 --> 00:20:01.920
Well, 1978, yeah, that's uh I'm I'm fortunate enough to be the only NASCAR winning driver in one year, 55 races, no other NASCAR.
00:20:02.240 --> 00:20:03.519
They're all NASCAR races.
00:20:04.880 --> 00:20:06.000
84 stars.
00:20:06.400 --> 00:20:08.880
And Billy Taylor was my crew chief.
00:20:09.119 --> 00:20:11.759
And we just worked our tails off, and Randy.
00:20:11.920 --> 00:20:14.000
Uh Dick's son-in-law helped us.
00:20:14.079 --> 00:20:16.240
Uh we just in Hop Harrington.
00:20:16.720 --> 00:20:19.440
He was in the shop, he helped build the cars.
00:20:19.680 --> 00:20:26.720
Uh we just built a great car and had a great setup, and uh boy, we just cleaned up our jack tan engines.
00:20:27.119 --> 00:20:35.920
It was a special time for you because you were making a national name that eventually would result in you going down south.
00:20:36.319 --> 00:20:54.640
Did you ever when you were enjoying all of this, I guess, uh publicity and all of these wins, uh what were did you begin to think about, look, I'm enjoying this, I'm making good I'm making good bank, but what I ultimately want to do is go cup racing.
00:20:58.240 --> 00:21:02.880
Ray drove it uh several races and then when I got full time.
00:21:03.119 --> 00:21:06.960
Uh we went to Caladega, our first race together.
00:21:07.200 --> 00:21:12.160
Um And uh right away I said, This is where I want to be.
00:21:12.400 --> 00:21:13.839
This is what I want to do.
00:21:14.160 --> 00:21:18.559
And you know, we won all those races in '78, and I didn't get the phone call.
00:21:18.640 --> 00:21:21.759
I thought Richard Petty, he was old, he's gonna return.
00:21:22.240 --> 00:21:23.200
Nobody called me.
00:21:23.440 --> 00:21:30.799
We ever had two Troyer cars, and he asked me to uh put three links and scratch in it, and the Troyer usually switched.
00:21:30.960 --> 00:21:34.799
So I did that, and we took we had a big block and a small block car.
00:21:35.039 --> 00:21:37.519
We took the big block to test it at C Cong.
00:21:38.079 --> 00:21:43.440
And everybody laughed when we pulled in with this big block modified on a little boring track.
00:21:43.599 --> 00:21:50.079
I kicked your butts, and so I put it on a small block car, so then we tested it, we won with that.
00:21:50.720 --> 00:21:52.559
And he said, Well, pick what car you want.
00:21:52.720 --> 00:21:53.680
I said, No, no.
00:21:53.920 --> 00:21:57.759
Sash Woolley, a great friend of mine, was driving part-time for him.
00:21:57.839 --> 00:21:59.440
I said, No, that's Sash.
00:22:00.319 --> 00:22:02.079
The car he wants, and I'll take the other one.
00:22:02.319 --> 00:22:04.319
He picked a small black guy and a big black guy.
00:22:04.480 --> 00:22:08.720
We won every race we were in with that car, just tremendous.
00:22:09.359 --> 00:22:12.400
Modified racing was always near and dear to your heart.
00:22:12.640 --> 00:22:16.640
Uh, I know how you feel because you're a true modified racer.
00:22:16.960 --> 00:22:26.960
So take me back to last year when uh Superdale Hedgequist decided, along with Patrick Emmerling, to uh come out with a tribute car.
00:22:27.279 --> 00:22:36.799
You were up there and they had refurbished your original new style jewelry, big red, and then they they start in the back of the pack.
00:22:37.200 --> 00:22:44.240
Okay, for the Thompson 150, and they looked like Jeff Bodine coming to the front, and they eventually won.
00:22:44.480 --> 00:22:49.119
It's painted like the big red machine, Dick Armstrong, and Jeff Bodine that made it famous.
00:22:49.279 --> 00:22:55.039
Tonight, history in the making 750th race for the NASCAR Wheeling Modified Tour.
00:22:55.200 --> 00:23:00.799
And as he guides the car through turns three and four, that race number 750 is gonna go to Patrick Emmerling.
00:23:00.880 --> 00:23:02.720
He wins tonight at Thompson Speedway.
00:23:02.960 --> 00:23:03.279
Yeah.
00:23:03.440 --> 00:23:18.480
Yeah, you know, that car uh he called me up and he probably from Bob Cunio, who he, Bobby V and I, we built that car together, Chief Gardy, and you know that was an awesome piece of Bodon chassis, we'll call it.
00:23:18.640 --> 00:23:22.079
Kind of like the Bodon Bob says, Bodon chassis modified.
00:23:22.240 --> 00:23:24.160
And he found out I had that car.
00:23:24.480 --> 00:23:28.720
And uh it was it was restored, but not a hundred percent.
00:23:28.960 --> 00:23:32.559
And he came down, he made a deal on the phone, he came down and bought it.
00:23:33.039 --> 00:23:44.319
Before he left, I gave him all the grandfather clocks that I had left that I won with that car, all the trophies that I won with that car, went with the car.
00:23:44.400 --> 00:23:45.759
He couldn't believe it.
00:23:48.160 --> 00:23:50.160
And I didn't know the guy.
00:23:50.400 --> 00:23:51.440
I really didn't know him.
00:23:51.599 --> 00:24:05.039
I didn't call him, I should have called, but I didn't ask who he was, but he turned out to be a great, great man, loved racing, loved race cars, and Bill made that a tribute car for uh Thompson, which is really great.
00:24:05.200 --> 00:24:09.119
And I got to drive the original car at a case line.
00:24:09.440 --> 00:24:10.559
It was so cool.
00:24:10.880 --> 00:24:20.720
We could talk for hours about Captain Springs, Thompson, Westbrook, you name it, all those tracks, and all the modified days, Martinville, and even Daytona we ran modified.
00:24:20.880 --> 00:24:24.319
So yeah, that was but that was another thing that got me.
00:24:24.480 --> 00:24:26.079
I want to be here, I want to do this.
00:24:26.160 --> 00:24:30.559
You know, it was way before it happened, but uh that that put the seed in me.
00:24:30.640 --> 00:24:32.880
I said, ah, I want to do this for a living.
00:24:33.680 --> 00:24:47.119
We used to go down there and watch the races in weartime when I was just a little kid, my sister and I and our parents, and on the way home, I'd always say, Ah, my dad, I'm going down to Daytona, I'm gonna race and win that race against my hero, Richard Petty, and win at 500.
00:24:47.200 --> 00:24:48.319
And of course, they all laughed.
00:24:48.480 --> 00:24:52.640
It took us two days to drive from Daytona to Chamong, New York back in those days.
00:24:53.440 --> 00:24:57.440
But it happened, and thank God it's uh a lot of hard work.
00:24:57.920 --> 00:25:03.359
We went a lot of races modifiers, and we did a lot of really neat things, but man, I'll tell you, we were 24-7.
00:25:03.920 --> 00:25:11.519
You know, I don't think I've ever been in a clubhouse at Stafford Springs because after the race, all the other guys went up there, right?
00:25:12.000 --> 00:25:14.240
To have a brewski and talk and da-da-da.
00:25:14.640 --> 00:25:20.240
I hauled my butt home and worked out of my car to get it ready the next night so I could win again.
00:25:20.400 --> 00:25:25.359
And that's how we one reason we run 78 races, we didn't party after the races.
00:25:25.519 --> 00:25:28.799
Uh, I missed that, but I'm glad I did it the way I did it.
00:25:29.039 --> 00:25:34.400
Well, we're glad you did too, and I'm especially honored to have you here on the modified minute.
00:25:34.640 --> 00:25:35.519
Be well, my friend.
00:25:35.839 --> 00:25:39.359
Jackie, I want to come up there and do an autograph thing at Stafford Springs.
00:25:39.519 --> 00:25:41.200
Come on, you got my number now.
00:25:41.599 --> 00:25:42.240
I got your number.
00:25:42.319 --> 00:25:43.519
I'll go talk to the boys.
00:25:43.759 --> 00:25:44.000
Okay.
00:25:44.400 --> 00:25:44.640
Yep.
00:25:47.200 --> 00:25:48.160
Thanks, Jeff.
00:25:49.119 --> 00:25:54.000
It's now time to reveal this week's Modified Minute Hot Dog of the Week.
00:25:54.160 --> 00:25:56.319
Someone who stood above the rest.
00:25:56.799 --> 00:26:03.920
Brought to you by Hummel Brothers, Quality Meets, the top dog in modified racing.
00:26:04.160 --> 00:26:07.599
100% quality since 1933.
00:26:08.880 --> 00:26:19.759
Anthony Bello was the mainstay of the Northwest modified circuit until he decided to move to North Carolina in hopes of pursuing his dream of a career in motorsport.
00:26:20.559 --> 00:26:24.480
He returned to Stafford Friday night behind the wheel of an SK modifier.
00:26:24.559 --> 00:26:31.599
He had to start at the back of the field because he was not at the track the previous week when the starting grid was determined.
00:26:31.680 --> 00:26:37.200
With 100 laps in the event, he set about meticulously moving through the field.
00:26:37.680 --> 00:26:43.359
Anthony Bellow just made a pass on the 179 to beat the Deroster Bellows on the move, guys.
00:26:43.519 --> 00:26:47.200
He started way back at the very back of the field because he wasn't here last week.
00:26:47.680 --> 00:26:51.519
Anthony Bellow, car number 47, now up to the fourth spot.
00:26:52.000 --> 00:26:55.119
With 20 laps left, he was firmly in second place.
00:26:59.839 --> 00:27:04.480
Michael Christopher smoked the field, leaving every lap of the SK5K.
00:27:04.720 --> 00:27:11.920
But when they dropped that checkered flag, Bellow's homecoming earned him a well-deserved second place pinnacle.
00:27:12.240 --> 00:27:13.680
Listen, this team's amazing.
00:27:14.000 --> 00:27:22.160
Timmy Jordan and the crew, man, you know, just it's great when we can just show up and run good, you know, and especially coming from the back.
00:27:22.240 --> 00:27:25.039
That must have been fun for all you guys in the stands tonight.
00:27:25.839 --> 00:27:32.079
By the accomplishment, Anthony, you have earned this week's Hot Dog of the Week Award.
00:27:36.000 --> 00:27:39.440
For the Pulios, modified racing is a family affair.
00:27:39.599 --> 00:27:51.839
It started with Ed wheeling his very own Modified, but when his son JP expressed an interest in a driving career, Ed stepped out of the ride and charted his son's rise up the racing ladder.
00:27:52.079 --> 00:28:02.400
He did it from the pits, where with the support of their owner Vinny Beadle, they oversaw JP's rise to one of the top rungs of the SK modified scene.
00:28:02.559 --> 00:28:07.920
Let's meet Ed Puglio in this week's Modified Minute Crew Call.
00:28:12.480 --> 00:28:13.920
It's Crew Call.
00:28:53.839 --> 00:29:01.200
Brought to you by Wattell Communications, your Northeast trackside dealer for radios and repairs.
00:29:01.599 --> 00:29:08.079
All year, you have ridden with the drivers inside their cockpit and saw what they saw.
00:29:08.319 --> 00:29:21.279
This week, however, we mounted the camera on the right side Nerf Bar to get an up close look at the suspension of Keith Rocco's 09 SK modified at the Waterford Speedbowl.
00:29:21.440 --> 00:29:27.599
Ride on the right side Nerf bar of Keith Rocco at Waterford Speedbowl and watch the front suspension.
00:29:27.839 --> 00:29:29.359
35 laughs there, buddy.
00:29:29.519 --> 00:29:30.079
Good luck.
00:29:41.279 --> 00:29:42.480
Green green green.
00:30:52.799 --> 00:30:53.279
No point.
00:31:01.519 --> 00:31:02.319
Great job, drivers.
00:31:02.480 --> 00:31:02.880
Great job.
00:31:03.039 --> 00:31:03.599
Good job.
00:31:03.759 --> 00:31:05.119
Good job, Brian.
00:31:05.680 --> 00:31:06.559
Good job, guys.
00:31:06.799 --> 00:31:07.519
That's what it's all about.
00:31:07.759 --> 00:31:08.559
I'll give it up.
00:31:11.200 --> 00:31:16.160
There are some victories in racing that are about a lot more than a trophy.
00:31:16.319 --> 00:31:17.920
They're about perseverance.
00:31:18.079 --> 00:31:23.759
They're about getting knocked down and getting back up and refusing to give up on a dream.
00:31:23.920 --> 00:31:28.799
And that's exactly what makes Sammy Anderson's story so special.
00:31:29.039 --> 00:31:33.119
She's our guest on this week's SK Soundings.
00:31:33.440 --> 00:31:35.759
This is SK Soundings.
00:31:36.400 --> 00:31:48.799
Brought to you by Wheelers Auto Services, the finest and top-level service of Premier Automobile makes and models, specializing in European, Japanese, and domestic vehicles.
00:31:49.599 --> 00:31:53.359
Well, Sammy, it's so great of you to join us here on the Modified Minute.
00:31:53.440 --> 00:31:54.000
Welcome.
00:31:54.799 --> 00:31:56.640
Thank you very much for having me.
00:31:57.039 --> 00:31:57.440
All right.
00:31:57.519 --> 00:32:10.559
There is no question in my mind when you look at racing legacies and specifically your racing legacy, it's loaded both on your father's side and on your mother's side as well.
00:32:10.880 --> 00:32:16.319
Was there ever any doubt that you were going to get behind the wheel of a race car?
00:32:17.279 --> 00:32:24.079
I began racing at Stafford in 2018 in the street stock division.
00:32:24.319 --> 00:32:29.759
And a lot of my sponsors who helped me in 2018, they're still with me to this day.
00:32:30.319 --> 00:32:36.880
I never mastered the street stocks, so it was an enormous jump for me.
00:32:37.119 --> 00:32:42.319
Um I guess, in a way, you know, kind of like pushing somebody into the deep end.
00:32:42.480 --> 00:32:50.640
Um, we kind of just went into it knowing that hey, this is probably not gonna go very good for a little while, and we're just gonna have to figure it out.
00:32:50.880 --> 00:32:57.839
Um looking back at it, there's things that took me longer to figure out than others.
00:32:58.240 --> 00:33:04.319
Uh throttle control for sure was something that I mean, even to this day, sometimes I stop I struggle with it.
00:33:04.480 --> 00:33:11.599
Um, I grew up in pageants, I grew up in dance class, uh, I grew up as a ballerina on my tippy toes.
00:33:11.759 --> 00:33:14.559
So getting behind a race car.
00:33:14.720 --> 00:33:23.359
Um I certainly I didn't even drive in the snow until after I began racing at Stafford because my mom would not let me.
00:33:23.599 --> 00:33:31.359
So driving-wise, my ability was basically at a zero uh when I first began racing.
00:33:31.680 --> 00:33:47.119
And I'm extremely grateful for my dad, my family, all of my crew guys, which by the way, most of my crew guys they were on my dad's crew in the early 2000s, and now over 20 years later, they're still with us.
00:33:47.200 --> 00:33:48.240
So that's incredible.
00:33:48.400 --> 00:33:49.039
Yes.
00:33:49.279 --> 00:33:58.880
Um, but yes, my dad, my crew guys, Corey, uh, there's a lot of people who've helped me greatly, and I'm excited to learn even more.
00:33:59.359 --> 00:34:01.279
What do you think you want to learn next?
00:34:01.839 --> 00:34:06.400
I would like to learn in a car with more horsepower, of course.
00:34:06.640 --> 00:34:10.000
Um, I really would love to move up in divisions.
00:34:10.079 --> 00:34:12.559
That's something that I really wanted to do this year.
00:34:12.880 --> 00:34:32.639
In 2025, uh, in August of 2025, I was involved in a motor vehicle accident on 384, and that certainly set back a lot of the goals that we had in mind for the offseason of 2025 going into this year 2026.
00:34:32.880 --> 00:34:36.079
Um, I wasn't even sure if I was gonna get back in a car again.
00:34:36.400 --> 00:34:47.760
So we had to pivot for sure, and um even my first lapse back at Stafford, it was the day before the Stafford open test.
00:34:48.320 --> 00:35:11.039
We went to a private test with the um with the Hummel team, and I was very surprised at how impacted my hand-eye coordination was uh getting back into the race car just because I pretty much was stuck in slow-mo for months uh from the motor vehicle accident.
00:35:11.360 --> 00:35:18.480
So that was the the most that I had moved literally um since the accident.
00:35:18.639 --> 00:35:28.000
So I I was very shocked like the first two laps of me going wide open, um, everything felt super delayed.
00:35:28.239 --> 00:35:33.840
Like I knew that I was going into the corner, but I couldn't see it until I was halfway into the corner.
00:35:34.079 --> 00:35:35.599
It was very, very, very strange.
00:35:35.760 --> 00:35:38.960
But it after two laps of it, it completely went away.
00:35:39.199 --> 00:35:41.199
Um and I didn't lift at all.
00:35:41.280 --> 00:35:47.360
And I was like, okay, we're either gonna figure this out or or we're not, and the only way to do that is is just to go for it.
00:35:47.840 --> 00:35:55.519
Well, let's go back uh to when you were taken out of the car uh and the rehab that you went through in the winter.
00:35:55.679 --> 00:35:58.079
Um how motivating was it?
00:35:58.159 --> 00:36:09.440
Because I've been told that as as painful as the rehab was, the one motivation was you were going to make it back to race in the spring sizzler.
00:36:09.840 --> 00:36:11.519
Tell me a little bit about that.
00:36:12.320 --> 00:36:30.239
So I would say that the the act of the physical therapy itself, as well as um the chiropractor and just regular doctor's appointments, the the actual appointments themselves, not a thing about them felt motivating.
00:36:30.480 --> 00:36:43.679
Um and it's especially difficult when they're measuring, okay, we're gonna see how far you could bend this week, and you know, can you can you move just a little bit more?
00:36:43.760 --> 00:36:48.480
And there's the doctors are excited because I can move just that much more.
00:36:48.559 --> 00:36:56.559
And I'm in my head thinking, I grew up in dance class, like I normally can do way beyond this.
00:36:57.119 --> 00:37:14.800
Um so it it was extremely difficult, and they definitely the doctors were trying to help me refrain from that mindset, and they were saying, Hey, like you're you're actually gonna hurt your progress if if that's the mindset that you have going into this.
00:37:14.960 --> 00:37:31.119
Um and they they certainly they kicked my butt a little bit when it came to that and said, you know, you need to you need to readjust how how you're looking at this because you have to just take the baby steps, um, no matter how painful and slow it feels.
00:37:31.280 --> 00:37:40.480
Um but for sure the spring sizzler was the only thing that I could think of during that time.
00:37:40.800 --> 00:37:46.880
And I so terribly wanted to win the spring sizzler.
00:37:47.039 --> 00:37:50.320
Like that was something that I wanted to do so badly.
00:37:50.639 --> 00:38:00.480
And if you go back and watch the duel at the Spring Sizzler, I was about three or four tenths off, and I don't think I've ever blocked so bad in my life.
00:38:00.880 --> 00:38:06.239
I was in the lead, and I was just like, I have a shot to actually make this happen.
00:38:06.400 --> 00:38:18.400
And I had a blast racing Dalton McCarthy that race, and you know, we were laughing afterwards because I I was teasing him saying, Hey, it almost took you 20 laps, well, you finally figured out what I was doing.
00:38:18.639 --> 00:38:30.880
So that was a really fun race, but I I just I terribly wanted to win the very first race back at at Stafford, even if it was uh a duel, a heat race, whatever it was.
00:38:31.840 --> 00:38:41.039
Well, a little bit later uh after April, you did get back in the winner's circle at your other home race track Waterford Speedbowl.
00:38:41.119 --> 00:38:41.280
Yes.
00:38:41.519 --> 00:38:50.000
So I would have to think when you when you took that checkered flag, it made you even more motivated to finally check the box at Stafford.
00:38:50.320 --> 00:38:52.079
Yes, yes, for sure.
00:38:52.320 --> 00:39:04.320
Um I've I've been racing at Stafford for years now and trying to have a win at Stafford for a very long time, and I can finally say that we checked that box off.
00:39:04.559 --> 00:39:10.800
Um some sometimes it felt like maybe we just aren't going to figure it out here.
00:39:10.960 --> 00:39:13.119
Maybe it's just not meant to be.
00:39:13.360 --> 00:39:17.039
Um and we definitely shifted our mindset.
00:39:17.119 --> 00:39:31.280
I would say that the Waterford win certainly helped with that, um, just because it was something that a lot of people in racing, as well as on social media and within I I guess like my circle.
00:39:31.440 --> 00:39:35.599
Um a lot of people were saying, you know, we don't think that she should be back in race car.
00:39:36.639 --> 00:39:39.679
This isn't this isn't how it's supposed to be.
00:39:39.920 --> 00:39:49.920
Um, so to finally have that win at Waterford certainly felt like it propelled us into the Stafford win, I would say.
00:39:50.320 --> 00:39:55.599
Green flag is out, we are underway, and it's Sammy Anderson with the jump taking the lead in the first turn.
00:39:55.840 --> 00:40:00.559
Sammy Anderson turning in the run of her career, down into turn number three.
00:40:00.800 --> 00:40:09.199
Sammy Anderson has dreamt of this moment, she's given it a roll, and Sammy Anderson will be in Napa Victory Lane here at Stafford.
00:40:09.440 --> 00:40:17.199
You started on the pole, you led every lap, and when you came into Victory Lane, do you even remember anything about it?
00:40:17.519 --> 00:40:20.079
I remember every single stitch of that.
00:40:20.239 --> 00:40:25.199
There's not a single thing about that particular race.
00:40:25.280 --> 00:40:33.039
I mean, even from it who exactly I pulled up to before that race when you go out back to lineup.
00:40:33.119 --> 00:40:58.639
I I could almost recite every car in the order in which you know you you get into your position and then you go out back and uh the race itself and the first face that I saw after the race um of course was in the on the back stretch when they were doing the tech for the ride height, um and they were laughing at me because I went the wrong way.
00:40:58.880 --> 00:41:01.760
So um everything about that.
00:41:01.840 --> 00:41:07.440
I that's a very, very, very good memory at Stafford that I'll cherish.
00:41:07.840 --> 00:41:11.440
Let me tell you, let me tell you, it's a golden moment in Stafford history as well.
00:41:12.000 --> 00:41:16.719
And we all celebrated it, we continue to celebrate it, but we want more.
00:41:17.599 --> 00:41:17.840
Exactly.
00:41:18.159 --> 00:41:18.719
We want more.
00:41:18.960 --> 00:41:23.119
Yes, we hope that before the end of the season you taste victory lane again.
00:41:23.360 --> 00:41:31.199
And if not, well, then let's take the offseason and decide whether you go you go up a notch or you stay in the SK lights.
00:41:31.519 --> 00:41:32.719
I will tell you one thing.
00:41:32.880 --> 00:41:38.719
You're one of the most popular drivers out there, you're affable, you have you have time for everybody.
00:41:39.039 --> 00:41:50.239
Always have a smile on your face, and we need more people like you, and that will ensure that modified racing will continue to grow generation after generation.
00:41:50.480 --> 00:41:52.400
Thanks so much for being with me today.
00:41:52.800 --> 00:41:54.800
Thank you very much for having me.
00:41:55.360 --> 00:42:01.039
Well, it's Kurt Brainerd's turn to take a swing at our weekly either or, so let's get to it.
00:42:01.840 --> 00:42:06.639
Either or where our guest must choose one or the other.
00:42:07.599 --> 00:42:08.960
Brought to you by Mr.
00:42:09.119 --> 00:42:14.000
Rooter Plumbing, expert plumbing contractors you can trust.
00:42:16.079 --> 00:42:18.480
Alright, Kurt, it's your turn in the hot seat.
00:42:18.559 --> 00:42:22.960
We call it either or, where you get to choose between two choices.
00:42:23.199 --> 00:42:24.159
Here we go.
00:42:24.400 --> 00:42:28.639
First, either or tacos or burritos.
00:42:30.159 --> 00:42:32.000
All Mexicans was the same.
00:42:32.480 --> 00:42:33.199
Burritos.
00:42:33.760 --> 00:42:34.079
Okay.
00:42:34.960 --> 00:42:39.679
An Apple Watch or just a plain old wristwatch.
00:42:40.159 --> 00:42:41.519
Plain old wristwatch.
00:42:41.920 --> 00:42:43.519
I like the way you think.
00:42:44.880 --> 00:42:49.519
Paddle shift or a conventional shifter on the floor.
00:42:49.920 --> 00:42:50.480
Come on.
00:42:50.880 --> 00:42:52.320
Shifter on the floor.
00:42:52.639 --> 00:42:53.840
See, you're old school.
00:42:53.920 --> 00:42:54.320
I love it.
00:42:54.400 --> 00:42:54.719
I love it.
00:42:54.800 --> 00:42:55.360
You're just like me.
00:42:55.440 --> 00:42:57.280
I'm answering the questions the same way.
00:42:57.519 --> 00:43:00.719
Outside of the Mexican side, because I do like Mexican.
00:43:00.880 --> 00:43:03.519
Um hardtop or convertible.
00:43:03.840 --> 00:43:04.880
Hardtop.
00:43:05.280 --> 00:43:06.559
I disagree with you.
00:43:07.679 --> 00:43:10.559
I I love I love convertibles.
00:43:11.039 --> 00:43:16.960
Well, they have their advantages, but you know, it's like I guess I like the feel of a hardtop.
00:43:17.039 --> 00:43:17.760
You know, nice solid.
00:43:18.480 --> 00:43:19.039
Okay, yeah.
00:43:19.119 --> 00:43:22.159
And you don't have to worry about the the wind messing up your hair.
00:43:22.239 --> 00:43:23.280
Oh, you're like me.
00:43:23.519 --> 00:43:24.400
You don't have to worry about that.
00:43:25.039 --> 00:43:26.239
That's why I have the hat on.
00:43:26.880 --> 00:43:34.480
And finally, for guys our age, a rocker or a recliner?
00:43:37.840 --> 00:43:39.519
Is there a right answer there?
00:43:41.039 --> 00:43:44.320
Uh I'll go with recliner.
00:43:44.400 --> 00:43:45.360
That sounds younger.
00:43:45.519 --> 00:43:46.400
Yeah, it does.
00:43:46.639 --> 00:43:52.719
Alright, Kurt, we wish you the very best, and I appreciate you participating in our weekly either or.
00:43:53.440 --> 00:43:54.719
Okay, thank you.
00:43:55.440 --> 00:43:57.519
Well, that's a lid on this week's show.
00:43:58.320 --> 00:44:03.119
My thanks goes out to my guests, Ed Puglio, Sammy Anderson, and Jeff Bodine.
