00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.080
Hi and welcome to the Mind Pull Shape Podcast.
00:00:02.240 --> 00:00:17.120
My name is Paula Parker, and my work is here to offer you specialized tools, practices, and frameworks to help you step into the next version of you, one in which you feel in charge around food, great in your body, and more connected to yourself.
00:00:17.280 --> 00:00:36.719
So today we are talking about identity and there's a gap between the version of you who feels like you are in charge around food and indulging when it's appropriate, and the other point where you feel like you're out of control or you're overindulging with food or alcohol.
00:00:36.880 --> 00:00:39.600
And we are going to talk about that gap and how to close that gap.
00:00:39.840 --> 00:00:42.399
So, why is identity relevant here?
00:00:42.640 --> 00:00:48.719
Well, we often get caught up in the strategy or what I think of as tactics, like only what to do.
00:00:48.880 --> 00:00:59.200
So your meal plan or your macros or your calories or your workouts, all of those things that are helpful and that you need to do in order to get what you want.
00:00:59.359 --> 00:01:10.719
But we don't focus so much on who we need to be in order to do those things because you can have the most amazing strategy in the world, but if you're not able to follow through on it, it's pretty much useless.
00:01:10.879 --> 00:01:21.359
So if your strategy is seemingly doable, but you are having a hard time doing it, then we need to focus less externally and more internally.
00:01:21.519 --> 00:01:27.040
So you can think of this idea of identity and tactics as an iceberg.
00:01:27.120 --> 00:01:33.920
So in that iceberg, the tactics or the strategy is on top and the identity is the foundation, it's the bottom.
00:01:34.159 --> 00:01:42.079
Identity is really focusing on you and who you are being to follow through on this amazing strategy.
00:01:42.239 --> 00:01:45.200
We've all heard these stories of lottery winners.
00:01:45.280 --> 00:01:50.480
So I want to tell you an interesting story about a lottery winner that lost it all.
00:01:50.640 --> 00:01:55.040
Okay, so there was this guy, his name was William Bud Post.
00:01:55.200 --> 00:01:56.879
Apparently, he went as Bud.
00:01:57.040 --> 00:02:00.480
And in the 80s, he won over 16 million dollars.
00:02:00.799 --> 00:02:07.280
And then he spent it on houses, he spent it on businesses, he spent it on cars, he gave it away to friends and family.
00:02:07.439 --> 00:02:12.319
His brother reportedly hired a hitman in an attempt to get part of his fortune.
00:02:12.560 --> 00:02:15.919
And then a few years later, he declared bankruptcy.
00:02:16.159 --> 00:02:22.080
When he died in 2006, he had only a tiny bit of the jackpot left.
00:02:22.319 --> 00:02:23.840
How is this possible?
00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:25.439
You could imagine for yourself.
00:02:25.599 --> 00:02:26.879
You're like, that would never happen.
00:02:27.039 --> 00:02:30.000
If I won$16 million, that would be it.
00:02:30.080 --> 00:02:32.719
I would invest, I would be smart with it, right?
00:02:32.960 --> 00:02:44.479
That might be because your identity around being good with money or being able to be responsible or manage money, your self-concept, your identity there is very high.
00:02:44.639 --> 00:02:54.080
In a case like this, it shows us that we can change our external environment so we can have more money or we can get into a smaller body.
00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:59.840
But if we haven't changed who we are being, our identity, we'll lose it.
00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:02.319
We'll gain the weight back, we'll lose the money.
00:03:02.560 --> 00:03:09.360
When bud, when William Post was asked what the lottery had done for him, he said, I wish it had never happened.
00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:10.800
We don't want that to be you.
00:03:10.960 --> 00:03:22.879
We want you to engage in your body transformation journey and on the other side say, I am so proud of myself, and I have changed as a result of this process.
00:03:23.039 --> 00:03:26.639
For having had this goal, I've become a better person.
00:03:27.120 --> 00:03:33.520
So let's talk about identity because you're going to need to shift your identity in order to sustain your results.
00:03:33.759 --> 00:03:37.520
When I talk about identity, I mean two parts.
00:03:37.680 --> 00:03:39.360
One is your personality.
00:03:39.520 --> 00:03:42.719
So this is how you might describe yourself to others.
00:03:42.960 --> 00:03:49.759
This includes labels like your astrological sign, different roles you play, like a wife or a mother.
00:03:49.919 --> 00:03:52.800
It also includes your personal standards.
00:03:53.280 --> 00:03:58.479
How you interact with food, when you go to the store, are you gonna steal something or not?
00:03:58.560 --> 00:04:08.879
Right, these are your personal standards, how much you exercise, whether you like intense workouts or you more of a walker, and you like gentle yoga.
00:04:09.039 --> 00:04:11.520
It's how you think about yourself, your self-concept.
00:04:11.680 --> 00:04:13.599
Also, is things like characteristics.
00:04:13.759 --> 00:04:20.000
Do you think of yourself as somebody who is a people person, really outgoing, or are you somebody who's introverted?
00:04:20.160 --> 00:04:21.600
These are just characteristics.
00:04:21.759 --> 00:04:31.199
This is part of your identity, how you think about yourself, how you label yourself, and again, how you would describe yourself to others, or how others might talk about you.
00:04:31.279 --> 00:04:32.879
This is the personality component.
00:04:33.040 --> 00:04:42.000
Then there's more of a what I think of as a core self, which, depending on your belief system, may stay with you beyond lifetimes.
00:04:42.240 --> 00:04:44.160
That is also part of your identity.
00:04:44.399 --> 00:04:49.439
The core self may never change, but the personality part that is much more fluid.
00:04:49.600 --> 00:04:52.879
It's going to change based on who you're with, the context.
00:04:53.040 --> 00:04:58.240
It's also going to change the time of day or where you are in your cycle if you're still menstruating.
00:04:58.399 --> 00:05:09.600
So all very powerful, labels are powerful, characteristics, how we talk about ourselves, how we think about ourselves, all very powerful, but also constructed and changeable.
00:05:09.839 --> 00:05:13.279
Let's talk about how identity fits into things and why it matters.
00:05:13.519 --> 00:05:17.199
So think of your identity as essentially the starting point.
00:05:17.439 --> 00:05:24.879
From your identity evolves your perspective on life, on the situation or the circumstances that happen to you.
00:05:25.040 --> 00:05:29.199
So you have thoughts based on that perspective, that identity.
00:05:29.439 --> 00:05:36.959
Then your thoughts generate feelings, you feel a certain way, and your feelings dictate what you do or what you don't do.
00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:38.079
So your actions.
00:05:38.240 --> 00:05:42.079
And then the results in your life are created from those actions.
00:05:42.319 --> 00:05:45.759
The results that we have, then we form an identity around.
00:05:45.839 --> 00:05:49.199
So it reaffirms that identity loop.
00:05:49.439 --> 00:06:03.199
The results that you create, for example, with your weight, you will start to think of yourself as somebody who struggles with food, somebody who is active, somebody who is a little overweight, whatever that is, it like reaffirms your identity.
00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:16.160
The point I really want to get to here is that your identity matters because it influences every aspect of your behavior and how you feel and how you think, and it is changeable because it's constructed.
00:06:16.399 --> 00:06:22.399
So consider that your identity could be influencing your results without you even knowing it.
00:06:22.560 --> 00:06:23.759
Let's think of an example.
00:06:23.920 --> 00:06:27.439
So let's say you think of yourself as somebody who struggles with food.
00:06:27.519 --> 00:06:31.439
You've been struggling with food and weight or had body issues your whole life.
00:06:31.600 --> 00:06:35.199
It's hard for you to imagine it to be any other way.
00:06:35.600 --> 00:06:43.600
And then you get home on a Friday night and you're stressed, you might be thinking it's permissible to turn to food or alcohol.
00:06:43.759 --> 00:06:47.360
It's permissible, it's within your personal standards.
00:06:47.519 --> 00:06:49.839
It's okay to overindulge.
00:06:49.920 --> 00:06:55.120
Maybe that's overindulging on the weekends or you're snacking in the evening.
00:06:55.279 --> 00:07:00.079
It's not outside of the realm of possibility for you to be doing that.
00:07:00.560 --> 00:07:06.240
You might not love it, you might be hoping to change it, but again, this is normal.
00:07:06.319 --> 00:07:09.759
It's very familiar behavior to you because why?
00:07:09.920 --> 00:07:11.439
It's part of your identity.
00:07:11.680 --> 00:07:13.040
That is changeable.
00:07:13.199 --> 00:07:14.879
Now I want to shift gears a little bit.
00:07:14.959 --> 00:07:20.160
I want you to bring to mind somebody who in your mind has this figured out.
00:07:20.319 --> 00:07:30.160
Maybe they have the body that you want, maybe they have the fitness level that you want, or the relationship with food that you really admire and that you would like to achieve for yourself.
00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:32.399
Okay, so bring them to mind.
00:07:32.560 --> 00:07:33.519
Think of this person.
00:07:33.680 --> 00:07:36.319
We're going to refer to this person as an expander.
00:07:36.560 --> 00:07:42.399
This is somebody who, for you conceptually, is expanding what is possible.
00:07:42.560 --> 00:07:46.879
Now, when you bring this person to mind and you have some mixed feelings, that's totally okay.
00:07:47.040 --> 00:07:53.759
So you might have some frustration that it's seemingly easier for them than it is for you.
00:07:53.920 --> 00:08:01.040
You could have some jealousy, envy, some self-pity that this is not your situation or you find it so hard.
00:08:01.199 --> 00:08:02.560
It's just not fair.
00:08:02.720 --> 00:08:03.759
That's totally fine.
00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:05.839
Simply put that aside for the moment.
00:08:06.079 --> 00:08:14.639
That's a good sign, actually, if it brings up emotion for you, because it means there's emotional resonance for you and you've chosen well.
00:08:14.959 --> 00:08:16.800
Now answer these two questions.
00:08:17.040 --> 00:08:21.120
How do you think they physically feel in their body?
00:08:21.439 --> 00:08:25.680
And number two, how do you think they feel about their body?
00:08:25.839 --> 00:08:28.160
So both physically, how do they feel?
00:08:28.319 --> 00:08:32.639
And then emotionally, what do they feel when they think about their body?
00:08:32.799 --> 00:08:52.159
So physically, maybe it's agile, strong, light on their feet, at ease, comfortable emotionally, maybe it's confident, proud, at ease, grounded, joyful, secure, content, peaceful.
00:08:52.399 --> 00:08:54.480
You will never have their exact body.
00:08:54.720 --> 00:08:57.440
Sorry to tell you, you will never have their exact body.
00:08:57.600 --> 00:09:05.840
But what you will have is what you just brought to mind is physically feeling that way and emotionally feeling that way.
00:09:06.159 --> 00:09:07.919
That is destined for you.
00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:09.279
Otherwise, you wouldn't want it.
00:09:09.440 --> 00:09:10.559
I truly believe that.
00:09:10.720 --> 00:09:16.399
And this is what is waiting for you on the other side of that identity gap.
00:09:16.559 --> 00:09:17.919
So now we know where we're headed.
00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:22.879
And in contrast, you might be able to get more clear on where you are right now.
00:09:23.039 --> 00:09:32.240
Because if you think of that person and think of what they are physically and emotionally experiencing in their body, it might bring into contrast your personal experience.
00:09:32.480 --> 00:09:36.000
So physically, how are you feeling in your body most days?
00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:41.120
Do you feel achy or stiff or tightness in your joints?
00:09:41.360 --> 00:09:48.399
Do you notice that the extra weight you're carrying impedes your movement when you are trying to be active or physical?
00:09:48.480 --> 00:09:53.600
You can feel that heaviness, you can feel the excess on your body and it slows you down.
00:09:53.759 --> 00:09:57.519
Maybe your clothes are pinching or feeling a little bit tight.
00:09:57.759 --> 00:09:59.759
How are you feeling physically in your body?
00:09:59.919 --> 00:10:04.399
And then how are you feeling emotionally when you think about your body?
00:10:04.639 --> 00:10:06.240
Is there frustration there?
00:10:06.399 --> 00:10:07.679
Is there rejection?
00:10:07.840 --> 00:10:10.879
Is there any kind of embarrassment or self-loathing?
00:10:11.039 --> 00:10:20.879
If you've recently lost weight and you are feeling good about that, but you are scared that you're going to gain the weight back, and what will people say or what will people think?
00:10:21.039 --> 00:10:22.240
People will judge you.
00:10:22.480 --> 00:10:26.000
When you think about your body, what are the emotions that come up for you?
00:10:26.320 --> 00:10:32.159
Do you feel doubt that you can really make significant changes with your body?
00:10:32.320 --> 00:10:35.440
If you really check in, what's the level of doubt there?
00:10:35.600 --> 00:10:43.360
There could be an undercurrent of disbelief that it will ever really change, that you can really physically change your body.
00:10:43.440 --> 00:10:50.399
You might have a mental weight set point where you think, well, maybe I can get here, but like I can't live in like my most desired body.
00:10:50.559 --> 00:10:52.080
That's not available to me.
00:10:52.320 --> 00:10:53.440
You want to question that.
00:10:53.679 --> 00:10:56.000
Question why you would choose to believe that.
00:10:56.320 --> 00:11:03.519
Do you notice that you try to disconnect from yourself or your body through food and alcohol?
00:11:03.679 --> 00:11:06.960
So maybe you're in a social situation and you're feeling a little self-conscious.
00:11:07.120 --> 00:11:10.879
Do you use food to mitigate that discomfort?
00:11:11.120 --> 00:11:14.480
Do you have a glass of wine to mitigate that discomfort?
00:11:14.799 --> 00:11:17.840
Do you use food and alcohol as relief?
00:11:18.080 --> 00:11:20.159
If so, this is great news, okay?
00:11:20.240 --> 00:11:23.519
You're in the right place because now you understand it.
00:11:23.679 --> 00:11:34.320
You are not thinking that you need to how somehow summon up willpower or self-discipline, because that's not the problem.
00:11:34.559 --> 00:11:39.440
The problem is a brain that is seeking relief from that emotional pain.
00:11:39.600 --> 00:11:45.679
And so then now you have a really clear-eyed view of what problem to solve.
00:11:45.919 --> 00:11:52.159
The problem of seeking relief from what you're experiencing with food and alcohol.
00:11:52.320 --> 00:11:57.120
And then when you get really good at it, people around you will say, Wow, you have so much self-discipline.
00:11:57.200 --> 00:11:58.480
You have so much willpower.
00:11:58.639 --> 00:12:04.799
And you'll just smile and nod because you just know that's not the case and you are just living in a completely different paradigm.
00:12:04.960 --> 00:12:08.879
Okay, so now we know where you are and where you are going.
00:12:09.120 --> 00:12:22.960
I want you to take solace in that the only difference between where you are now and where you are going, that new identity, is how you are thinking, feeling, and behaving on a regular basis.
00:12:23.200 --> 00:12:24.960
That is the only difference.
00:12:25.200 --> 00:12:33.840
When you look at your expander, she is likely thinking differently, feeling differently, and acting differently than you are now.
00:12:34.080 --> 00:12:40.159
Your job is to simply take your best guess at what that might be and then do that.
00:12:40.559 --> 00:12:42.000
Now let's use an example.
00:12:42.159 --> 00:12:53.039
So let's just say you are home alone one evening and you want to relax, and your brain offers up the suggestion of indulging a little bit with some food.
00:12:53.120 --> 00:13:00.639
Maybe that's a bag of chips that you know is there, uh popcorn, or the remaining bottle of wine that you have on the counter.
00:13:00.879 --> 00:13:21.279
Okay, now if your identity is such that you believe yourself to be somebody who needs food, needs to over-indulge with food or alcohol to relax, to have pleasure, to enjoy the movie or to unwind, you are going to be much more likely to overindulge.
00:13:21.519 --> 00:13:25.919
If you are somebody who thinks, you know what, I trust myself.
00:13:26.080 --> 00:13:27.039
I'm in control.
00:13:27.279 --> 00:13:32.399
I always know I'm in control because nobody else's hand is putting the food or alcohol to my face.
00:13:32.960 --> 00:13:56.240
I only eat or drink what serves me, and I can take it or leave it, and every new bite is a decision, and you believe yourself to be that, and you think those thoughts intentionally, you might have something to indulge, you might not, but it you won't be in a battle about it, and you won't overindulge.
00:13:56.399 --> 00:14:03.600
If your identity is I am somebody with a sweet tooth, I am someone who once I start, I can't stop.
00:14:03.759 --> 00:14:07.840
I'm somebody who struggles with overeating or drinking wine.
00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:10.240
I am somebody who needs a lot of food.
00:14:10.320 --> 00:14:11.759
It's like a volume issue.
00:14:11.919 --> 00:14:14.080
I need a lot of food to feel satisfied.
00:14:14.320 --> 00:14:18.720
I think indulging is wrong or bad, or I shouldn't be doing it.
00:14:18.879 --> 00:14:19.840
It's not okay.
00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:28.720
And it's because of that, it's more enjoyable to eat alone, or it's more enjoyable to eat in secret because there's no witnesses, there's nobody there to watch or judge.
00:14:28.879 --> 00:14:38.799
But of course, you are judging, otherwise, you wouldn't feel that sense of pleasure and enjoyment by being the only person that's there in the room.
00:14:38.960 --> 00:14:45.120
When that is your identity, you are going to experience high desire, high permissiveness.
00:14:45.360 --> 00:14:51.200
And then, of course, you are more likely to take action on that feeling and overindulge.
00:14:51.360 --> 00:15:00.720
You might also feel rebellious or powerful in a sense, in a more of an irreverent way, because you're doing something you really shouldn't be doing.
00:15:00.960 --> 00:15:04.080
That is also very compelling about the situation.
00:15:04.159 --> 00:15:10.240
And if you see yourself as somebody who engages in this kind of behavior, this is going to be normal to you.
00:15:10.320 --> 00:15:12.320
And again, you're going to be likely to overindulge.
00:15:12.480 --> 00:15:22.960
Who I'm speaking to, who I'm calling forth, is the version of you who really is take it or leave it when it comes to food, who gets most of your enjoyment.
00:15:23.120 --> 00:15:25.840
Again, some enjoyment from food and alcohol, totally fine.
00:15:25.919 --> 00:15:30.639
But you get most of your enjoyment from what I think of as natural pleasures.
00:15:30.879 --> 00:15:32.960
You can relax without these things.
00:15:33.120 --> 00:15:37.200
You can derive pleasure from your life without food and alcohol as well.
00:15:37.360 --> 00:15:46.159
You are the kind of person who can just take it or leave it when it comes to any kind of food, when it comes to sweet food, salty food, homemade baking, all of it.
00:15:46.320 --> 00:15:52.799
And if you don't believe that about yourself right now, take on the identity of a learner.
00:15:53.120 --> 00:15:54.639
You are learning, right?
00:15:54.799 --> 00:15:56.159
In yoga, what do they call it?
00:15:56.320 --> 00:15:57.200
Beginner's mind.
00:15:58.080 --> 00:16:04.000
Take on the identity of I am learning how to lean into natural pleasures.
00:16:04.159 --> 00:16:11.360
I am learning how to relax with a bath or a shower or a walk instead of a bowl of popcorn in a movie.
00:16:11.519 --> 00:16:15.600
I am learning how to watch a movie without eating or drinking anything.
00:16:15.840 --> 00:16:22.399
And step into that learning mindset if you can't step into that full identity yet, which would be totally normal.
00:16:22.559 --> 00:16:32.720
And what I encourage you to do, notice those times when the identity holds true, when you do eat in moderation, when you do make the healthy choice when you could have made a different option.
00:16:32.879 --> 00:16:45.840
You want to highlight that for your brain so that you're reminding yourself, there are many times in my life where I do step into that identity because your brain will want to kind of cling on to that old identity because it's just more familiar.
00:16:46.080 --> 00:16:56.960
So to conversely, you want to highlight there are so many times in which you are reinforcing that take it or leave it person, that healthier version of you.
00:16:57.120 --> 00:17:06.240
But here's what you need to know because in that gap between the old version, like the before picture, and the after, is the dark in between.
00:17:06.400 --> 00:17:07.519
And it can really suck here.
00:17:07.599 --> 00:17:08.160
It can be hard.
00:17:08.240 --> 00:17:12.880
There can be lots of discomfort because you haven't fully embodied this person quite yet.
00:17:12.960 --> 00:17:20.000
There's going to be good days where it all feels really easy, and then there's going to be bad days when it feels like that old identity is very strong.
00:17:20.160 --> 00:17:22.240
That's okay, that's part of the process.
00:17:22.480 --> 00:17:23.279
Lean into it.
00:17:23.359 --> 00:17:25.680
I did a whole episode on the dark in between.
00:17:25.759 --> 00:17:28.720
It's 182, so you can go back and listen to that one.
00:17:28.960 --> 00:17:33.920
But anytime you can remember what is the intentional thinking that I have?
00:17:34.000 --> 00:17:37.519
What are the thoughts, feelings, and actions of my new identity?
00:17:37.599 --> 00:17:49.519
And how can I lean more into those versus the old thoughts, feelings, and actions that are coming from that old identity and then reinforcing that old identity.
00:17:49.680 --> 00:17:55.119
So what's inside of that identity gap are simply thoughts, feelings, and actions.
00:17:55.279 --> 00:18:12.559
And while you may not have control over what the number on the scale is gonna say tomorrow or the exact day of the calendar that you are going to see your desired body, what you do have control over is your thoughts, feelings, and actions.
00:18:12.720 --> 00:18:18.960
That is what you can direct, and that is where you want to focus so that over time your identity really does shift.
00:18:19.119 --> 00:18:22.240
Okay, I hope that was helpful, and I'll see you again next time.
00:18:22.400 --> 00:18:23.039
Bye.
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.080
Hi and welcome to the Mind Pull Shape Podcast.
00:00:02.240 --> 00:00:17.120
My name is Paula Parker, and my work is here to offer you specialized tools, practices, and frameworks to help you step into the next version of you, one in which you feel in charge around food, great in your body, and more connected to yourself.
00:00:17.280 --> 00:00:36.719
So today we are talking about identity and there's a gap between the version of you who feels like you are in charge around food and indulging when it's appropriate, and the other point where you feel like you're out of control or you're overindulging with food or alcohol.
00:00:36.880 --> 00:00:39.600
And we are going to talk about that gap and how to close that gap.
00:00:39.840 --> 00:00:42.399
So, why is identity relevant here?
00:00:42.640 --> 00:00:48.719
Well, we often get caught up in the strategy or what I think of as tactics, like only what to do.
00:00:48.880 --> 00:00:59.200
So your meal plan or your macros or your calories or your workouts, all of those things that are helpful and that you need to do in order to get what you want.
00:00:59.359 --> 00:01:10.719
But we don't focus so much on who we need to be in order to do those things because you can have the most amazing strategy in the world, but if you're not able to follow through on it, it's pretty much useless.
00:01:10.879 --> 00:01:21.359
So if your strategy is seemingly doable, but you are having a hard time doing it, then we need to focus less externally and more internally.
00:01:21.519 --> 00:01:27.040
So you can think of this idea of identity and tactics as an iceberg.
00:01:27.120 --> 00:01:33.920
So in that iceberg, the tactics or the strategy is on top and the identity is the foundation, it's the bottom.
00:01:34.159 --> 00:01:42.079
Identity is really focusing on you and who you are being to follow through on this amazing strategy.
00:01:42.239 --> 00:01:45.200
We've all heard these stories of lottery winners.
00:01:45.280 --> 00:01:50.480
So I want to tell you an interesting story about a lottery winner that lost it all.
00:01:50.640 --> 00:01:55.040
Okay, so there was this guy, his name was William Bud Post.
00:01:55.200 --> 00:01:56.879
Apparently, he went as Bud.
00:01:57.040 --> 00:02:00.480
And in the 80s, he won over 16 million dollars.
00:02:00.799 --> 00:02:07.280
And then he spent it on houses, he spent it on businesses, he spent it on cars, he gave it away to friends and family.
00:02:07.439 --> 00:02:12.319
His brother reportedly hired a hitman in an attempt to get part of his fortune.
00:02:12.560 --> 00:02:15.919
And then a few years later, he declared bankruptcy.
00:02:16.159 --> 00:02:22.080
When he died in 2006, he had only a tiny bit of the jackpot left.
00:02:22.319 --> 00:02:23.840
How is this possible?
00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:25.439
You could imagine for yourself.
00:02:25.599 --> 00:02:26.879
You're like, that would never happen.
00:02:27.039 --> 00:02:30.000
If I won$16 million, that would be it.
00:02:30.080 --> 00:02:32.719
I would invest, I would be smart with it, right?
00:02:32.960 --> 00:02:44.479
That might be because your identity around being good with money or being able to be responsible or manage money, your self-concept, your identity there is very high.
00:02:44.639 --> 00:02:54.080
In a case like this, it shows us that we can change our external environment so we can have more money or we can get into a smaller body.
00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:59.840
But if we haven't changed who we are being, our identity, we'll lose it.
00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:02.319
We'll gain the weight back, we'll lose the money.
00:03:02.560 --> 00:03:09.360
When bud, when William Post was asked what the lottery had done for him, he said, I wish it had never happened.
00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:10.800
We don't want that to be you.
00:03:10.960 --> 00:03:22.879
We want you to engage in your body transformation journey and on the other side say, I am so proud of myself, and I have changed as a result of this process.
00:03:23.039 --> 00:03:26.639
For having had this goal, I've become a better person.
00:03:27.120 --> 00:03:33.520
So let's talk about identity because you're going to need to shift your identity in order to sustain your results.
00:03:33.759 --> 00:03:37.520
When I talk about identity, I mean two parts.
00:03:37.680 --> 00:03:39.360
One is your personality.
00:03:39.520 --> 00:03:42.719
So this is how you might describe yourself to others.
00:03:42.960 --> 00:03:49.759
This includes labels like your astrological sign, different roles you play, like a wife or a mother.
00:03:49.919 --> 00:03:52.800
It also includes your personal standards.
00:03:53.280 --> 00:03:58.479
How you interact with food, when you go to the store, are you gonna steal something or not?
00:03:58.560 --> 00:04:08.879
Right, these are your personal standards, how much you exercise, whether you like intense workouts or you more of a walker, and you like gentle yoga.
00:04:09.039 --> 00:04:11.520
It's how you think about yourself, your self-concept.
00:04:11.680 --> 00:04:13.599
Also, is things like characteristics.
00:04:13.759 --> 00:04:20.000
Do you think of yourself as somebody who is a people person, really outgoing, or are you somebody who's introverted?
00:04:20.160 --> 00:04:21.600
These are just characteristics.
00:04:21.759 --> 00:04:31.199
This is part of your identity, how you think about yourself, how you label yourself, and again, how you would describe yourself to others, or how others might talk about you.
00:04:31.279 --> 00:04:32.879
This is the personality component.
00:04:33.040 --> 00:04:42.000
Then there's more of a what I think of as a core self, which, depending on your belief system, may stay with you beyond lifetimes.
00:04:42.240 --> 00:04:44.160
That is also part of your identity.
00:04:44.399 --> 00:04:49.439
The core self may never change, but the personality part that is much more fluid.
00:04:49.600 --> 00:04:52.879
It's going to change based on who you're with, the context.
00:04:53.040 --> 00:04:58.240
It's also going to change the time of day or where you are in your cycle if you're still menstruating.
00:04:58.399 --> 00:05:09.600
So all very powerful, labels are powerful, characteristics, how we talk about ourselves, how we think about ourselves, all very powerful, but also constructed and changeable.
00:05:09.839 --> 00:05:13.279
Let's talk about how identity fits into things and why it matters.
00:05:13.519 --> 00:05:17.199
So think of your identity as essentially the starting point.
00:05:17.439 --> 00:05:24.879
From your identity evolves your perspective on life, on the situation or the circumstances that happen to you.
00:05:25.040 --> 00:05:29.199
So you have thoughts based on that perspective, that identity.
00:05:29.439 --> 00:05:36.959
Then your thoughts generate feelings, you feel a certain way, and your feelings dictate what you do or what you don't do.
00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:38.079
So your actions.
00:05:38.240 --> 00:05:42.079
And then the results in your life are created from those actions.
00:05:42.319 --> 00:05:45.759
The results that we have, then we form an identity around.
00:05:45.839 --> 00:05:49.199
So it reaffirms that identity loop.
00:05:49.439 --> 00:06:03.199
The results that you create, for example, with your weight, you will start to think of yourself as somebody who struggles with food, somebody who is active, somebody who is a little overweight, whatever that is, it like reaffirms your identity.
00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:16.160
The point I really want to get to here is that your identity matters because it influences every aspect of your behavior and how you feel and how you think, and it is changeable because it's constructed.
00:06:16.399 --> 00:06:22.399
So consider that your identity could be influencing your results without you even knowing it.
00:06:22.560 --> 00:06:23.759
Let's think of an example.
00:06:23.920 --> 00:06:27.439
So let's say you think of yourself as somebody who struggles with food.
00:06:27.519 --> 00:06:31.439
You've been struggling with food and weight or had body issues your whole life.
00:06:31.600 --> 00:06:35.199
It's hard for you to imagine it to be any other way.
00:06:35.600 --> 00:06:43.600
And then you get home on a Friday night and you're stressed, you might be thinking it's permissible to turn to food or alcohol.
00:06:43.759 --> 00:06:47.360
It's permissible, it's within your personal standards.
00:06:47.519 --> 00:06:49.839
It's okay to overindulge.
00:06:49.920 --> 00:06:55.120
Maybe that's overindulging on the weekends or you're snacking in the evening.
00:06:55.279 --> 00:07:00.079
It's not outside of the realm of possibility for you to be doing that.
00:07:00.560 --> 00:07:06.240
You might not love it, you might be hoping to change it, but again, this is normal.
00:07:06.319 --> 00:07:09.759
It's very familiar behavior to you because why?
00:07:09.920 --> 00:07:11.439
It's part of your identity.
00:07:11.680 --> 00:07:13.040
That is changeable.
00:07:13.199 --> 00:07:14.879
Now I want to shift gears a little bit.
00:07:14.959 --> 00:07:20.160
I want you to bring to mind somebody who in your mind has this figured out.
00:07:20.319 --> 00:07:30.160
Maybe they have the body that you want, maybe they have the fitness level that you want, or the relationship with food that you really admire and that you would like to achieve for yourself.
00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:32.399
Okay, so bring them to mind.
00:07:32.560 --> 00:07:33.519
Think of this person.
00:07:33.680 --> 00:07:36.319
We're going to refer to this person as an expander.
00:07:36.560 --> 00:07:42.399
This is somebody who, for you conceptually, is expanding what is possible.
00:07:42.560 --> 00:07:46.879
Now, when you bring this person to mind and you have some mixed feelings, that's totally okay.
00:07:47.040 --> 00:07:53.759
So you might have some frustration that it's seemingly easier for them than it is for you.
00:07:53.920 --> 00:08:01.040
You could have some jealousy, envy, some self-pity that this is not your situation or you find it so hard.
00:08:01.199 --> 00:08:02.560
It's just not fair.
00:08:02.720 --> 00:08:03.759
That's totally fine.
00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:05.839
Simply put that aside for the moment.
00:08:06.079 --> 00:08:14.639
That's a good sign, actually, if it brings up emotion for you, because it means there's emotional resonance for you and you've chosen well.
00:08:14.959 --> 00:08:16.800
Now answer these two questions.
00:08:17.040 --> 00:08:21.120
How do you think they physically feel in their body?
00:08:21.439 --> 00:08:25.680
And number two, how do you think they feel about their body?
00:08:25.839 --> 00:08:28.160
So both physically, how do they feel?
00:08:28.319 --> 00:08:32.639
And then emotionally, what do they feel when they think about their body?
00:08:32.799 --> 00:08:52.159
So physically, maybe it's agile, strong, light on their feet, at ease, comfortable emotionally, maybe it's confident, proud, at ease, grounded, joyful, secure, content, peaceful.
00:08:52.399 --> 00:08:54.480
You will never have their exact body.
00:08:54.720 --> 00:08:57.440
Sorry to tell you, you will never have their exact body.
00:08:57.600 --> 00:09:05.840
But what you will have is what you just brought to mind is physically feeling that way and emotionally feeling that way.
00:09:06.159 --> 00:09:07.919
That is destined for you.
00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:09.279
Otherwise, you wouldn't want it.
00:09:09.440 --> 00:09:10.559
I truly believe that.
00:09:10.720 --> 00:09:16.399
And this is what is waiting for you on the other side of that identity gap.
00:09:16.559 --> 00:09:17.919
So now we know where we're headed.
00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:22.879
And in contrast, you might be able to get more clear on where you are right now.
00:09:23.039 --> 00:09:32.240
Because if you think of that person and think of what they are physically and emotionally experiencing in their body, it might bring into contrast your personal experience.
00:09:32.480 --> 00:09:36.000
So physically, how are you feeling in your body most days?
00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:41.120
Do you feel achy or stiff or tightness in your joints?
00:09:41.360 --> 00:09:48.399
Do you notice that the extra weight you're carrying impedes your movement when you are trying to be active or physical?
00:09:48.480 --> 00:09:53.600
You can feel that heaviness, you can feel the excess on your body and it slows you down.
00:09:53.759 --> 00:09:57.519
Maybe your clothes are pinching or feeling a little bit tight.
00:09:57.759 --> 00:09:59.759
How are you feeling physically in your body?
00:09:59.919 --> 00:10:04.399
And then how are you feeling emotionally when you think about your body?
00:10:04.639 --> 00:10:06.240
Is there frustration there?
00:10:06.399 --> 00:10:07.679
Is there rejection?
00:10:07.840 --> 00:10:10.879
Is there any kind of embarrassment or self-loathing?
00:10:11.039 --> 00:10:20.879
If you've recently lost weight and you are feeling good about that, but you are scared that you're going to gain the weight back, and what will people say or what will people think?
00:10:21.039 --> 00:10:22.240
People will judge you.
00:10:22.480 --> 00:10:26.000
When you think about your body, what are the emotions that come up for you?
00:10:26.320 --> 00:10:32.159
Do you feel doubt that you can really make significant changes with your body?
00:10:32.320 --> 00:10:35.440
If you really check in, what's the level of doubt there?
00:10:35.600 --> 00:10:43.360
There could be an undercurrent of disbelief that it will ever really change, that you can really physically change your body.
00:10:43.440 --> 00:10:50.399
You might have a mental weight set point where you think, well, maybe I can get here, but like I can't live in like my most desired body.
00:10:50.559 --> 00:10:52.080
That's not available to me.
00:10:52.320 --> 00:10:53.440
You want to question that.
00:10:53.679 --> 00:10:56.000
Question why you would choose to believe that.
00:10:56.320 --> 00:11:03.519
Do you notice that you try to disconnect from yourself or your body through food and alcohol?
00:11:03.679 --> 00:11:06.960
So maybe you're in a social situation and you're feeling a little self-conscious.
00:11:07.120 --> 00:11:10.879
Do you use food to mitigate that discomfort?
00:11:11.120 --> 00:11:14.480
Do you have a glass of wine to mitigate that discomfort?
00:11:14.799 --> 00:11:17.840
Do you use food and alcohol as relief?
00:11:18.080 --> 00:11:20.159
If so, this is great news, okay?
00:11:20.240 --> 00:11:23.519
You're in the right place because now you understand it.
00:11:23.679 --> 00:11:34.320
You are not thinking that you need to how somehow summon up willpower or self-discipline, because that's not the problem.
00:11:34.559 --> 00:11:39.440
The problem is a brain that is seeking relief from that emotional pain.
00:11:39.600 --> 00:11:45.679
And so then now you have a really clear-eyed view of what problem to solve.
00:11:45.919 --> 00:11:52.159
The problem of seeking relief from what you're experiencing with food and alcohol.
00:11:52.320 --> 00:11:57.120
And then when you get really good at it, people around you will say, Wow, you have so much self-discipline.
00:11:57.200 --> 00:11:58.480
You have so much willpower.
00:11:58.639 --> 00:12:04.799
And you'll just smile and nod because you just know that's not the case and you are just living in a completely different paradigm.
00:12:04.960 --> 00:12:08.879
Okay, so now we know where you are and where you are going.
00:12:09.120 --> 00:12:22.960
I want you to take solace in that the only difference between where you are now and where you are going, that new identity, is how you are thinking, feeling, and behaving on a regular basis.
00:12:23.200 --> 00:12:24.960
That is the only difference.
00:12:25.200 --> 00:12:33.840
When you look at your expander, she is likely thinking differently, feeling differently, and acting differently than you are now.
00:12:34.080 --> 00:12:40.159
Your job is to simply take your best guess at what that might be and then do that.
00:12:40.559 --> 00:12:42.000
Now let's use an example.
00:12:42.159 --> 00:12:53.039
So let's just say you are home alone one evening and you want to relax, and your brain offers up the suggestion of indulging a little bit with some food.
00:12:53.120 --> 00:13:00.639
Maybe that's a bag of chips that you know is there, uh popcorn, or the remaining bottle of wine that you have on the counter.
00:13:00.879 --> 00:13:21.279
Okay, now if your identity is such that you believe yourself to be somebody who needs food, needs to over-indulge with food or alcohol to relax, to have pleasure, to enjoy the movie or to unwind, you are going to be much more likely to overindulge.
00:13:21.519 --> 00:13:25.919
If you are somebody who thinks, you know what, I trust myself.
00:13:26.080 --> 00:13:27.039
I'm in control.
00:13:27.279 --> 00:13:32.399
I always know I'm in control because nobody else's hand is putting the food or alcohol to my face.
00:13:32.960 --> 00:13:56.240
I only eat or drink what serves me, and I can take it or leave it, and every new bite is a decision, and you believe yourself to be that, and you think those thoughts intentionally, you might have something to indulge, you might not, but it you won't be in a battle about it, and you won't overindulge.
00:13:56.399 --> 00:14:03.600
If your identity is I am somebody with a sweet tooth, I am someone who once I start, I can't stop.
00:14:03.759 --> 00:14:07.840
I'm somebody who struggles with overeating or drinking wine.
00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:10.240
I am somebody who needs a lot of food.
00:14:10.320 --> 00:14:11.759
It's like a volume issue.
00:14:11.919 --> 00:14:14.080
I need a lot of food to feel satisfied.
00:14:14.320 --> 00:14:18.720
I think indulging is wrong or bad, or I shouldn't be doing it.
00:14:18.879 --> 00:14:19.840
It's not okay.
00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:28.720
And it's because of that, it's more enjoyable to eat alone, or it's more enjoyable to eat in secret because there's no witnesses, there's nobody there to watch or judge.
00:14:28.879 --> 00:14:38.799
But of course, you are judging, otherwise, you wouldn't feel that sense of pleasure and enjoyment by being the only person that's there in the room.
00:14:38.960 --> 00:14:45.120
When that is your identity, you are going to experience high desire, high permissiveness.
00:14:45.360 --> 00:14:51.200
And then, of course, you are more likely to take action on that feeling and overindulge.
00:14:51.360 --> 00:15:00.720
You might also feel rebellious or powerful in a sense, in a more of an irreverent way, because you're doing something you really shouldn't be doing.
00:15:00.960 --> 00:15:04.080
That is also very compelling about the situation.
00:15:04.159 --> 00:15:10.240
And if you see yourself as somebody who engages in this kind of behavior, this is going to be normal to you.
00:15:10.320 --> 00:15:12.320
And again, you're going to be likely to overindulge.
00:15:12.480 --> 00:15:22.960
Who I'm speaking to, who I'm calling forth, is the version of you who really is take it or leave it when it comes to food, who gets most of your enjoyment.
00:15:23.120 --> 00:15:25.840
Again, some enjoyment from food and alcohol, totally fine.
00:15:25.919 --> 00:15:30.639
But you get most of your enjoyment from what I think of as natural pleasures.
00:15:30.879 --> 00:15:32.960
You can relax without these things.
00:15:33.120 --> 00:15:37.200
You can derive pleasure from your life without food and alcohol as well.
00:15:37.360 --> 00:15:46.159
You are the kind of person who can just take it or leave it when it comes to any kind of food, when it comes to sweet food, salty food, homemade baking, all of it.
00:15:46.320 --> 00:15:52.799
And if you don't believe that about yourself right now, take on the identity of a learner.
00:15:53.120 --> 00:15:54.639
You are learning, right?
00:15:54.799 --> 00:15:56.159
In yoga, what do they call it?
00:15:56.320 --> 00:15:57.200
Beginner's mind.
00:15:58.080 --> 00:16:04.000
Take on the identity of I am learning how to lean into natural pleasures.
00:16:04.159 --> 00:16:11.360
I am learning how to relax with a bath or a shower or a walk instead of a bowl of popcorn in a movie.
00:16:11.519 --> 00:16:15.600
I am learning how to watch a movie without eating or drinking anything.
00:16:15.840 --> 00:16:22.399
And step into that learning mindset if you can't step into that full identity yet, which would be totally normal.
00:16:22.559 --> 00:16:32.720
And what I encourage you to do, notice those times when the identity holds true, when you do eat in moderation, when you do make the healthy choice when you could have made a different option.
00:16:32.879 --> 00:16:45.840
You want to highlight that for your brain so that you're reminding yourself, there are many times in my life where I do step into that identity because your brain will want to kind of cling on to that old identity because it's just more familiar.
00:16:46.080 --> 00:16:56.960
So to conversely, you want to highlight there are so many times in which you are reinforcing that take it or leave it person, that healthier version of you.
00:16:57.120 --> 00:17:06.240
But here's what you need to know because in that gap between the old version, like the before picture, and the after, is the dark in between.
00:17:06.400 --> 00:17:07.519
And it can really suck here.
00:17:07.599 --> 00:17:08.160
It can be hard.
00:17:08.240 --> 00:17:12.880
There can be lots of discomfort because you haven't fully embodied this person quite yet.
00:17:12.960 --> 00:17:20.000
There's going to be good days where it all feels really easy, and then there's going to be bad days when it feels like that old identity is very strong.
00:17:20.160 --> 00:17:22.240
That's okay, that's part of the process.
00:17:22.480 --> 00:17:23.279
Lean into it.
00:17:23.359 --> 00:17:25.680
I did a whole episode on the dark in between.
00:17:25.759 --> 00:17:28.720
It's 182, so you can go back and listen to that one.
00:17:28.960 --> 00:17:33.920
But anytime you can remember what is the intentional thinking that I have?
00:17:34.000 --> 00:17:37.519
What are the thoughts, feelings, and actions of my new identity?
00:17:37.599 --> 00:17:49.519
And how can I lean more into those versus the old thoughts, feelings, and actions that are coming from that old identity and then reinforcing that old identity.
00:17:49.680 --> 00:17:55.119
So what's inside of that identity gap are simply thoughts, feelings, and actions.
00:17:55.279 --> 00:18:12.559
And while you may not have control over what the number on the scale is gonna say tomorrow or the exact day of the calendar that you are going to see your desired body, what you do have control over is your thoughts, feelings, and actions.
00:18:12.720 --> 00:18:18.960
That is what you can direct, and that is where you want to focus so that over time your identity really does shift.
00:18:19.119 --> 00:18:22.240
Okay, I hope that was helpful, and I'll see you again next time.
00:18:22.400 --> 00:18:23.039
Bye.
