Let's Talk: Hey everybody, welcome to Let's Talk, a podcast by men for men. We're so glad to have you with us today. I'm with my good friends Brad and Coit, and we have been talking to some men about being built for influence. The last few weeks we have been talking about what that looks like, and and today more specifically, we're gonna be talking about calling and purpose. Calling and purpose. What is our purpose? And so Coit, he's been hosting us, does such a great job. Coit what Coit, what do you got for say? Let's talk about calling and purpose. Calling and purpose. They're they're huge for guys. I calling's something we talk about pretty frequently in the kind of church, faith, men's group setting. purpose less so. And so I I think as men, n understanding and having the ability to navigate both of those things together becomes incredibly vital for us. So, that's where we're going. But before we get there, let's have a little bit of fun. And so we we kind of tweaked this a little bit, but the the original funny question was what did you think you would be growing up? But we kind of expanded it. What's maybe a funny job you had or Maybe a not funny job, maybe a terrible job that you had growing up over the years. I I had an interesting job right before I was going off to school, college. my uncle asked me to work on his dairy farm 'cause he wanted to go on vacation and as you n as you may or may not know, the cows have to be milked. You can't just say I'm gonna Take off for a week and good luck. No, like I think they'll explode or something. I'm not sure. It's not good. and and so he said, I need you to learn how to run milk all these cows so I can go on vacation. I said, You know what? Great. So he trained me up and worked with him for a few weeks. They they leave on vacation and they have this one cow called Speedy and and he was like the mean one. Yeah. And so I you know, I'm milking of course you know, not not by hand like like the old school, but you you know, you put the milkers on and but this cow would like to kick you and try to get you. So we had to put this like clamp thing like over its back, around its haunches, you know. So so it won't it can't kick you. Yeah. Well so I did it, I milked the cow and then I turn him loose out of the pasture, except I forgot to take this device off. And so he's hopping like he can't walk right. She She, thank you. Early on in the I was a rookie. I was a rookie. Okay. All right. She, thank you. Thank you. maybe that's why I didn't got that's why I was so get hired back. I only worked one summer there. So I dunno my uncle and I'm like called a check on him and said, is he okay? I I called my other uncle because my one was on vacation and I'm like, hey man, like I've got this cow I can't catch. I put this thing on him and he's running around. And is she she she thank you? She locked that in. It's a she. It's a she. And so he had to come over and we had to chase this cow speedy down. and take this clamp thing off and I don't know. I felt like a failure. But mostly 'cause I didn't know it was a sheep. But that was that was probably yeah wasn't the crazy experience though. was it was. It was a lot of fun. It was a lot of fun. Good memory. I love that. I had a strange work work season in my life. I removed asbestos at a time. Underneath D F W Airport, by the way. Nice. And those pipes were hot and it was a long way to the bathroom. Which is the worst part of the job. Yeah. Once you get underground, it's a long way. It was a mile to the bathroom. That's a really good Bring a bucket with you or something. Yeah. Wow. It's crazy. I thought you were a smoker all these years. You just got a little umbestus in there. Love it. man. That's good. I I think I think most of us have worked some kind of silly job or done something goofy over the years at some point. it's I don't know. It makes for fun stories. The We spend a lot of our lives as men trying to figure out what we're supposed to do, who we're supposed to be. Yeah, that's the question in every get together, right? Yeah, right. Like, what do you do? Well and even as we're growing up, like what do you want to be? Like what do you want to be when you grow up? And so it's it's ingrained into us. And so, I think God's probably more interested in who we're influencing than in who we're trying to become in in the spirit of our our sermon or sermon series, our our show series here. And so let's kind of set a foundation as we're going into thinking about that. What is calling? think there's a couple of dynamics to it, you know, as it as it relates to Christian men, or men in general, you know as as believers though we have this kind of general overarching calling of follower of Christ, I'm gonna serve Jesus, you know, God's called me to be a witness and all those kind of things. And so you all all believers have that. We have that general calling. But there's also the specific calling of, you know, what's my what what would that assignment or that role look like or or what is God calling me to a a way of life, you know, I I've I've got a I've got a buddy, he's probably fifty two, fifty three, he's never married. he's in the ministry, single, been single, may may remain single, I don't know. but that for some people that's a calling. Like like I don't I don't feel that, you know, having a family and having children is what God has asked me to do. And so so there can be different different callings, different ways of exploring that. and that that's more specific. And that's usually what people are like. What am I what am I supposed to do with my life is probably what most people are thinking of when they think of calling. But there's really the general and the specific. Yeah. Yeah. so what are some ways, some land Language we can give guys to speak more specifically or more intentionally about this topic. I know in here we've kind of got some different language for like assignment versus calling and career and so kind of all these different kind of key words that we throw around when we're having this discussion. let's kind of define that a little bit so guys have language so when they are talking to somebody or when they're meeting another guy, like we're not just like, Hey, what do you what do you do? What is your job? We can ask them some more specific intentional questions to get answers that are maybe really what we're looking for. Yeah, I think you know what comes to mind for me. is there's there's a hope in the scripture. That i I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you, not to harm you, to give you a hope and a future, right? And so there's this great promise that we were born with identity. Yeah. That we we we have a calling and a purpose and a design and God created us for for his kingdom and his purpose and and it's unique to us. And I think that one of the things that the the world can do is, you know, put this weight on us that we've gotta find out who we are. And and it's through our career or it's through our, you know, that thing that we do for a living, right? And you know, a spiritual coach of mine for many years passed away now. He he told me ye many years ago, who are you? You know, he asked me the question, who are you? And I I said, Well I'm I'm Brad. I'm you know, I'm a husband, a father. No, those are things you do. Who are you? You know, and And through a process of kind of growing and maturing, you know, it's like I I kind of refined that that whole question and and did some homework, so to speak. And I feel like I'm called to be a father. Mm-hmm. You know, I I find myself fathering. You know, the Bible teaches us that there are many teachers but few fathers. And I I want to be a good dad spiritually and and I want a father, you know, and and that's not necessarily tied to how much money I make or what title I have or what my position is. Is or my influence or what business I own, it's tied to I want to make an impact. I want to I want to make a difference, be a man of of influence. Yeah. And and I think even that goes deeper than just your own kids. For sure. I think being called to being a father, right? Like, I think that's that's a a discipleship kind of mentorship position you can take with men from all walks of life, not just your biologically connected ones. And I think that's that's that's a really important thing to highlight too, is The the depth that you're calling really can have. It it can it can be so, so much deeper than just your career or a hobby or or a task or even just something that you feel really good at. Something that I'm like, I'm I'm pretty good at this, you know, maybe this is what I'm called to. 'Cause I think we can get bogged down a lot of times in and we've t we've talked about this other side of it before, but I think they kind of are two different things that approach the same answer, but We can get really bogged down in finding our identity in the things that we're doing. So let's talk about because calling isn't necessarily our our career or even something that maybe we're doing in this season, how do we be intentional about drawing our identity out of calling rather than drawing our identity out of assignment or hobby or position or title. I think we have to look to what's God put in us. You know, you can actually be good at something, but that as you said, that's not your your call. so we I think we have to be a little careful to not let our talents drive our call. there might be people that are incredible public speakers, but they may never take a stage. You know, that may not be what God has put in them. It might be they're great communicators one on one and it might be business. It might be, you know, the arts in some way. And so we we have to see what's inside. I think a lot of you know, you said that that I hadn't thought of that that idea of the being a father is as kind of a call which which is pretty powerful actually. and a as you said that I wondered if I kinda shared that because I I feel like I've got a lot of that in me. you know, as the scripture says you got all these all lots of teachers, but not many fathers. And so certainly society needs more of that. that's kind of an aside, but I think that as we begin to nurture God, what a ask the Lord Pray, seek him. And don't let necessarily necessarily what somebody else has told you well you should or I I see this. That can be a part of it, but start with the Lord and and that's what I had to do in my life. I I remember the day I was I was called into the ministry. it was kind of a just an inner prompting. It wasn't like an audible voice, but it was it I I just felt this is this is it. And and then it was confirmed, you know. time and time again. And that that's probably Probably important to mention. Yeah, yeah. The many reliable witnesses. Sometimes it's the prophet said, well, okay, maybe he was hearing from God. Let's hope he was. maybe not. And so so that confirmation, and the Lord I found, really will give that to you. And so when I when I talk to people and we talk about calling, I say, lean in, lean into what you feel the Lord is saying. And I think as we lean in those things get confirmed over and over and over again and and then you you start to f find, okay that thing that's within me is also partnered with what God has for me. And now we've got something and I think that's part of the the call. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And and we've we've talked about kind of elements of that through previous shows. Kind of that idea of like when something's spoken over you or when you you feel like, I think this is it. Like that's an opportunity to start walking through an open door and God will either affirm that or he'll claim Close the door, right? and I man, guys, a lot of times, especially kind of young adult age, college age guys, struggle with that. I know a handful of guys that since they were in middle high school knew they were called to full time ministry and are struggling with making the leap from career over to that for, you know, a variety of reasons, money, marriage, all those kinds of things. But I think yeah, I know, right? Like and it's it's tough, right? 'Cause you're you feel this thing inside and there's an open door in front of you, but everything in the world's telling you that's that's a risky door to walk through, right? So I don't know, maybe just like a quick around the table, 'cause I I imagine we've all kind of walked through that door. Well you you did. You did. You were a police officer. I r I remember Quite said, Hey, I'm gonna I'm I'm probably gonna quit my job and and go to college. I'm like that's a terrible idea. Wait, let's think there's anything else. If you can do anything else, do not do this. You've got a good gig, man. You you put in a lot of years, man. You're probably about to retire. That was very close. Twenty years. 20 years. Wow. And so I that was very vivid. I mean, I remember our conversation, like, okay, hold on, Coy. Let's not let's not get hasty. Let's not get hasty listening to God. So turned out he was right. He was right. He was right. I mean, this is why you gotta have good people in your life. Let's have an honest conversation. but but you did something very special. You you leaned in. Mm hmm. You leaned in. You were walking with the Lord and said, You know what, I'm gonna take a risk. You know, stuff's risky, man. When when it comes to the calling. Yeah. And but I but at the same time I also think like we put way too much pressure on it. Like, man, this is the one decision for my life. And it and it I'm not d diminishing like that was a major shift. Yeah. but god in his graciousness, his sovereignty, he can direct us back. yeah. I I missed it. I you know, I forgot, I I made the wrong decision. God gotta gotta show you the way back to to whatever it is. And so I think when we think about the calling and my my career, we get a little too what's the word I'm looking for? We we get a little too think too much of that that one decision. Yeah. And if we're not careful we'll put so much stress on ourselves that it kinda it kinda harms us from being able to hear the voice of the Lord. Yeah. And and so but you've you did it. You you took a bold step and God's using you mightily and and it's it's been awesome to watch how God has taken you out of that out of a secular environment. And said, you know what, I got this this last half of your career, I got I got something else for you. Mm-hmm. And I love watching that. And and and I love watching it in you personally. So it's been been awesome. It's been a blast for me to walk out. I mean and that's pro probably why I I don't want to say it bothers me, but like I don't know, it like stirs my heart when I see people around me like struggling with making that decision when they feel incredibly confidently that God did in fact call them to ministry. so maybe that is why I'm like just like Well there's things that there's things that very practically pull against I mean we were talking about some of that earlier today is you know, man, this may impact my finances. which impacts my children, which impacts my wife, which impacts, you know, my future and I was gonna be able to retire in ten years and now it might be twenty. And you know, y all all these things start get to heaped into that that decision. and it can become a real struggle. And then you've got college kids. They're like, Man, I went to school for this and I don't even really like it, you know, now that I've spent a hundred and fifty grand. You know, I'd like to you know, I'd like to be a professional gambler. Great. So good money in it? Yeah. yeah. I mean I mean, you know, just just keep doubling down. I had a thought I was gonna Bring back up around the identity piece. I feel like, you know, there's so much about the calling, and I know we're gonna get into next week, we're gonna s focus specifically on ministry calling, but I think that identity is under such attack today that you know there's so much that the next generation is being bombarded with around identity. Yeah. There's such confusion and chaos. And I I think for you know, for me it's it's It's something we really need to talk about because calling isn't just necessarily called to the ministry, but it's called to be a policeman. I mean that that's a calling, right? There's a calling to be a fireman. There's a calling to medical, a calling to education and a calling to, you know, political and and and government and all these different areas. And I I I remember several years ago a friend of mine told me, said, 'cause you know, I've got this business calling on my life and I've been an entrepreneur now for a number of years and And Philip looked at me one day and he goes, Hey, you don't have a second class call. Ooh. That's good. Just because you spent years in the ministry and today God's moved you out of full time ministry vocationally and you're operating as an entrepreneur or business owner or what have you, that's not a second second class call. And you know, another friend of mine told me one time he goes, This was a senior pastor, he said, the apex of Christianity is not to become a staff member at a church. It's not and I remember I remember that so well. And but but I mean It's it's true because if you think about it What happens is the enemy starts bringing discouragement around identity and calling. Well, maybe I'm just not good enough. Maybe maybe I'm, you know, I'm not good enough to serve the Lord in these capacities or these areas. When the reality is we we each have a calling and a unique design and a gifting and a talent that God wants to make to use to make a difference in the earth and bring him glory. Well and a and a placement. God is God is wants us to go out as salt and light. He doesn't he doesn't want all the light just congealed. Together, you know, and a Tuesday morning staff meeting at the church. Right. Darkness everywhere else. Yeah. I mean heck with them. We got it all right here. No, he's called us to go out. We are light, you know, in those in some pretty dark places. Yeah. And we need the light there. We need it on the construction site. You know, we need it, you know, at the at the police station. You cer certainly we we should expect it at the church. We need it at the hospital. you know, the garage mechanic. I mean we we need the light to go all those places. And you're right, it's not a second class calling and and so but but more importantly, w Lord, what do you have for me? Yeah. And that we should all men of faith, you should all be asking, God, what what do you have for me? And our response should be speak, Lord, your servant here's here I am. Here I am. And and it's okay if you shake up my life a little bit. Now hold on, Brad. Yeah. That's okay, let's sit on that. Yeah, it's okay. Feeling pretty comfortable where at. Yeah, well you did it already. Appreciate it. You did it already. But I mean there may be somebody listening today that They feel like grace is lifting in a certain area of their life and they feel like transition maybe is coming. And that does require a step of faith. It does require some obedience and I need to process these things with my wife and my family and counselors and coaches and people that support me in my call. But man, the reality is, can God have access to my heart and my life to say, I'd like to make this transition in your life? And I'm not saying sell the house and buy the motorhome and become a missionary. In North Dakota. Unless that's what he calls you to do. Unless that's what he calls you to do. Or or no, Lord, I will not go to Hawaii. You know, that was the old Bible school. I will not go, Lord. There's no way. The sunny beaches for me to feed. Send me there. But but hey Lord, I give you permission. Help me see what you see about my life. Yeah. Boy, that's that's a really good question to ask yourself, right? Like, how willing am I to let God shake my life up? Now that I hear you say it back to me, I don't like Right, I know. That didn't feel so good, did it, Brett? Like cold water on your back. You're like, gee. man, that that really is a great question though. And and like you were saying, I think If there's an issue, if guys have a problem with knowing their identity, they're gonna have a really hard time finding and walking in their calling. And if you don't have either of those things running, your purpose is gonna be all over the place. And that's a problem for men. And I think we're we're seeing the fruit of generations of this kind of creeping in now is there's a whole generation of young men who for them not not all of them, there's lots of great young adult men out here in the world, but the so many that struggle with purpose. Even if they feel like maybe they have an identity and maybe a calling, like the fruit of that is the purpose that you're living with and and I think we're seeing that and this this is a great segue into our topic here like guys we were we were built for influence like literally god created us and placed us here for influence in in what wherever you're at like god's given us all a race to run and like my job's not to run brad's race right like i'm my job is to run my race and not run it with a point yep and so I think that's that's such a big thing is understanding who you are and why you're here and that we're not in competition with one another as believers. Like we're not trying to get to the finish line first, you know, like Well but don't you think comparison has really especially with social media now we're we're trying to run everybody else's race. Yeah. We're trying to live everybody else's life. And God's God's on the sideline saying, Hey, over here, buddy Yeah. And you're just not getting it. You're just not getting it and I and I think that is such a huge piece to saying, God, what race have you called me into? You know, I was in track for many, many years and and or well not many, but several years in high school and there were races I wanted to run. I I wanted to run the sprints. 'Cause those guys would run three times and sit down and stretch and talk to all the cheerleaders. A minute and a half ago. The coach is like, You're you're running long distance. I'm like, No, man, that's no fun. You know, we'd be back two hours later, you know, cheerleaders are gone. You know pizza's cold. Pizza's c is awful. You know. and and I kind of settled in the middle distance. I wasn't faster, particularly have endurance, so I but I was pretty good at the slot they put me in. you're gonna run the eight hundred and the mile. That's that's your sweet spot. And I was pretty good at it because I was where I where I was supposed to be. And When we wanna run everybody else's race, live everybody else's life, it's like you you're not gonna be real effective. You're not gonna be influential as as much as you you could be otherwise. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And and you may have a ton of fun going and throwing shot put, but you're gonna have very little impact or influence. Right. Right, right. True. Yeah. And so like fifteen feeting. Fun's not always part of it. Yeah. Fifteen. I'd be lucky to get off the the block. Throw it the wrong direction or something. Hit the coach in the head with the discus. So let's we've kind of started to get in there. What what keeps men from their calling? What is what are the barriers? What are the things that are holding men back from walking in their calling? I read this morning about the the The truth that our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers and spiritual wickedness and high places and you know, it's the enemy that really wants to rob us of our identity. That's the the if you think about it, as soon as the Father said, This is my son, whom in whom I am well pleased, he was his identity was immediately under attack. So when God confirms who you are, the enemy wants to attack it. And so I think it's important that we get Counsel and and friends and family that can support who is God calling who's God called me to be? What's he asking me to do? And can can people in my life help confirm that? But the enemy, man, we've we've got to do war. War to battle. Yeah. The enemy's after our identity, our purpose. Good, good, yeah. comparison as I mentioned is a is a that that'll keep you from it. Yeah. Fear. Man, I don't think I can do what you're asking. Which is which is tied into another one, comfort. I kinda like it how it is right now. Pretty good right now. I like this. Why mess with a good thing? Why do I feel like you guys collaborate before this show started? man, God'll always mess with with that that that good thing, man. Well, and we've talked in previous episodes about the the spiritual growth, the growth money. It's always uncomfortable. yeah. When when God is doing a new thing, it It's it's gonna be so that that comfort I think is a big one. you know, it's God, are you gonna require more of me? Yeah. God, are you gonna ask me to do something that I don't particularly want to do? And so, that's a big one. And then of course men can get distracted by things. They can get distracted by even good things. Good things. Good things. they can get get distracted by their hobbies, their next golf, golf. No, no, not golf. Not golf so much. Not golf. I mean that's that's come on. Okay. I love how that one's just off limits. I tell you, y'all weren't there but man, I sank some beautiful putts at the the men's conference golf deal. I was good for you. Who was on your team? we didn't do teams. you didn't. Yeah. It was just kind of our foresoms. We did kind of whatever we wanted to do. Yeah, it was it was fun. Good time. Good job. Drives. Don't don't ask me about my drives. They were turned. Well, what you gotta do is you gotta get that. You gotta get in the slot. Get your back all the way to turn and then drop that, get into that slot and then just turn on. Like an alligator arm. And that's it. That's all you gotta do. That's it. I mean it's easy it's easy. It's easy. Distractions, like we were saying. Yeah, there we go. You know what I I still say. Some some a ADHD man. That's that's When you've got it, it's just humans evolving. So if you've got ADHD you know, A D D where you just we're just more advanced. We're leveling up. I'll be sure to tell Natalie that's money. Here's the deal. Here's I'm leveling up. Are you coming with I am evolution and process. Yeah. If you don't believe me, just listen to my podcast. man. We talked about it. She's be like, You're not leveling up. You've devolved. Leveling up to the couch. leveling up to y you know one one more thing that I think this bears saying one of the things that can keep us from our calling is past success. Ooh so we can I was you don't know who I was quite back in nineteen eighty nine state champion state champ I mean I would have been if the coach had put me in. That's right. You know Be soaking it up in the hot tub, you know. Just But yeah, we can we can get the success and we can allow that to keep us from, okay, that's great what you did. Yeah. Or even where you are. I've got I've got something else for you. And and and and the the more the success, the greater the success, it's harder to get off of that. And make a shift if if that's what the Lord is calling you to do. Yeah. And I and I and these all kind of interrelate too, because success can look like so many different things, right? Like financial success. If I'm even if I don't necessarily like what I'm doing, if I'm feeling very financially successful at it, it's really hard to leave that and go to something that's perhaps less financially successful. if people are praising me for what I'm doing where I'm at, if I'm getting accolade and appreciation and it's Attention, man, it's hard to leave that and go do something that might be more impactful, but perhaps in more obscurity. Yep. A lot of dips. Success is very tricky. So, how do I discover my calling? I'm out here, I understand my identities in God. How There's a lot of dynamics at play. I I think that to discover your calling there is an element of I've gotta move. Some some people are I'm gonna just sit and wait. They close their eyes and they just wait and they wait and they wait and they wait. I I think God does he's into movement. Yeah. It y you've heard the old adage it's hard to it's hard to turn a parked car. You d you can't you can't do it. It's going no So so in order for God to show us and and move us and get us into different places, I think some level of movement, some level of forward engagement and saying, God, I I'm gonna I'm gonna d I'm gonna use what's in my hand already. I'm not gonna wait for you to place something else. I'm gonna start using, I'm gonna start moving, I'm gonna start going. And then let God kind of shape it rather than just sit so passively by and just wait. Wait there's people waiting years to figure out, and God's saying, you know what, just get off the couch, get going, do something. And God in those moments he'll he'll begin to share. And and I think it's good to explore just different things and I'm I'm thinking of the young men out there. y you don't know what you like, then then try a bunch of different things. Yep. You know, meet people, talk to people, go go go sit in a a mechanic's garage and see if that's something that you can you you you can feel a little bit. You know, goes go see what it looks like to run a locker room at a at a high school football game. You know, go go see what the hospital environment's like. You never know unless you just kinda get out there. So I just want to challenge some of the young men you you're struggling. Get out and about. Talk to people. try to try to find something and watch watch with the Lord. You'll be surprised. The Lord will just begin to guide you in s one way or another and y and you'll f you'll you'll find it. You'll find it. And and pay attention to what moves your heart. Yeah. You know, yeah, what what burden won't go away. What moves your heart, you know, that's a that's probably an indicator too. Yeah, of a place to start moving towards perhaps. Yeah. And and you kinda touched on it too, being Being faithful where you are. huge. Maximizing the season you're in just 'cause this isn't the season you wanna be in, man, showing yourself faithful where you are at and what we're what you're currently entrusted with. That's huge. And regardless of what the next season's going to look like, you're growing yourself in a meaningful way as well. Which is huge, right? Growing ourselves and pursuing alignment with God's will is Always important regardless of where you're at and what season you're in. And we touched on this, we talk about this all the time. Surround yourself with men of worth, with men of value who, one, are willing to speak truth and life into you and and two, you trust to speak truth and life into you. You know, that's really good, Coit, because today I had a conversation with a friend of mine, I we're wrapping up, but he said something really good to me today. He said, You know, you gotta think about it in one three and five year plan. Where where do you wanna be in five years and then work backwards? Mm. And but I do think that it's gotta flow out of a purpose that's bigger than me. Yeah. I think that's the the the test is is my vision bigger than me? Is my purpose and what I'm feeling compelled or called to Is it solving problems for other people? Is it bigger than me? Am I making an impact? Is there a burden I feel that won't go away? And what moves my heart that's outside of my own comfort? And and I think Success can be tricky, but I think calling is tied to that. Yeah. Somebody I heard this one time. If your your goal, if your vision is something that you feel you can confidently achieve, it's not big enough. Yeah. Yeah. Like if you don't need God to achieve it, it's not big enough. Yeah. I was like, ooh, that's good. and it well, it's here in the notes. I didn't say it. Start with God, not with opportunity. I think that's huge. A relationship with God. Make that your starting point. If you're not growing personally in your relationship with God, everything else we're talking about is is gonna lag behind, it's gonna suffer, and you're probably gonna struggle in it. Identity, calling, purpose, all of these things. If you're not pursuing primarily a relationship with God. Guys, that's what we got. Good one. Yeah. Yeah. It's good. this was good. Calling and purpose is so vital. Surround yourself with men that can speak those things over you, that can call out the things they see in you, that can call you up to the next level, right? Of of what God might have for you in your life.
